Side cartuny and he said he's called home, not man
anything from question. You're listening to the Strangeology Podcast. I'm
your host, Jeff Floren, and this is your place to
explore the weird, strange and unexplained, from cryptids and creatures,
(00:48):
the paranormal, aliens and UFOs, forbidden knowledge, ancient mysteries, conspiracies
and more. Hey everyone, and welcome back to the Strangeology Podcast.
Thank you so much for hanging out with me today,
and thank you for bearing with me for the slight
delay on getting this episode out. This actually aired on
(01:12):
my YouTube channel already, and I had the White Hall
Sasquatch Calling contest event the following day, so I didn't
get a chance to do this. And it's late because
the week I was trying to get it out, I
was solo parenting and then I got sick, So you know,
that stuff kind of causes a little bit of a
(01:33):
delay in the production schedule. But speaking of the White
Hall event, this past weekend the Sasquatch Festival. It was
a great success. As always, it was a beautiful day,
great weather. I got to see so many of you
out there who listen to the podcast, who follow me online,
check out my content, all my videos, so it was
(01:56):
great to see all of you. Thank you so much
for stopping by to say I know a few of
you were worried that I was not there because my
tent was in a slightly different location than it was
in the previous couple of years that I've done that event.
I get to the park a little bit later than anticipated,
but I'll be there again next year if they do
(02:18):
the event, which it sounds like they will. It was
the biggest one that they've done so far. I think
there was I heard one hundred and thirty five vendors.
There were a bunch of speakers, and then the calling
contest at the end of the day. So you know,
if you live in the Northeast, it's definitely a must see,
must go to event if you like bigfoot or cryptids
(02:41):
in general. It's a super fun time. Now, my last
event of the year is going to be on October
nineteenth in Schenectady, New York at the Viaport Aquarium, Rotterdam,
and that's going to be I believe from ten am
until five or six pm, So there's going to be
some vendors. There's going to be speakers as well, talking
(03:04):
about things like Bigfoot or Champ and all sorts of
other interesting creatures, cryptids, high strangeness in that kind of thing,
So that'll be a fun time. Definitely come check that out.
And just before we start the main show, I wanted
to throw out a couple quick reminders. Don't forget to
set your podcasting app to auto download so you never
(03:27):
miss a new episode. And don't forget to follow Strangeology

(04:09):
up any Strangeology merch. Also a small favor to ask
if you can leave a five star review of my
podcast wherever you listen to this show. It would be super,
super helpful and I would greatly appreciate it. All Right, well,
that's enough of that. Why don't we get into the
(04:31):
main segment of the show. This is part two for
America's Cryptid road Trip, and it is going to get
pretty wild towards the end, so make sure you listen
to the whole thing. Let's go. First up on the
(04:55):
second leg of this road trip is Hawaii. Hawaii's lush
landscapes or steeped in the thought. But few legends are
as eerie as that of the Mooh. While this one
is a little bit more of a supernatural being than
a flesh and blood cryptid, the lore on this is
no less interesting. According to the legend, the Moo are powerful,
shape shifting dragon like lizards that are often depicted as
(05:18):
gigantic in Hawaiian folklore. They are revered as ancient deities.
It's said that The moo can control water and the weather,
and can be found inhabiting freshwater ponds, caves, and streams,
and served as protectors and guardians of Hawaii's most sacred sites.
While they were said to help people, especially in battles,
they had a darker side as well. If angered, they
(05:39):
would become wrathful and dangerous, producing intense storms or even
flat out killing people that trifled with them. And in
some stories, themo transformed into beautiful women to lower men
away to their doom. And if one of these creatures
actually dies, their body becomes part of the landscape, which
is just super interesting. Now we're going to travel all
(06:00):
the way up to Alaska. There's a lot of weird
stuff in Alaska, and if you haven't yet, definitely check
out my Deep Dive podcast episode all about the Alaska
Triangle and the creatures that can be found within. Now,
many of the cryptids and creature legends in Alaska are
water based, and for this one, we're going to talk
about the Tizzaruk. This cryptid is said to live in
(06:21):
the Bearing Sea off the coast of Alaska near King
and Nunivak Islands. According to eyewitnesses, the Tizzaruk is said
to be serpent like with a two meter or roughly
six foot long head with flippers and a long tail.
Its name in the Annubiak language means the long tailed one.
The Tizeruk are also feared by the Inuit people, who
believe that the creature can cause misfortune or death to
(06:43):
those who encounter it. In fact, it's said that they
can snatch people from peers undetected, so one always has
to be mindful near the water. In nineteen eighty, an
ethnologist named John White, who was visiting King Island, recorded
locals witness accounts of seeing this sea monster, describing the head,
the neck, and the tail rising out of the ocean,
(07:04):
and that tapping on your fishing boat could actually attract
the creature. And there were even some members of the
Coastguard that claim that while rare, this creature was indeed real.
Now some think that the tizerak could be a surviving
prehistoric whale species like the Zuglidon, which when extinct thirty
three million years ago, or that it could be a
(07:24):
sea lion, walrus, or leopard seal. Another theory says that
it could be some undiscovered giant Wormlake creature. Either way,
you won't find me on Deadliest Catch looking for the Tizzera.
The next date brings us back into the lower forty eight,
which is Washington State. Now, I didn't mention Bigfoot in
California in the previous episode because of the Fresno Nightcrawlers,
(07:47):
although the Patterson Giblin film was shot in Bluff Creek, California,
capturing Patty the Bigfoot, which resulted in one of the
most hotly contested pieces of footage ever. I'm going to
drop Bigfoot for Washington stay. The reason being well, Washington
is said to have the most recorded bigfoot settings out
of anywhere in America on record. In fact, there are
(08:08):
over seven hundred documented cases. And we all know bigfoot right,
but just in case. They're described as hairy, upright walking
apes that are anywhere from six foot six to nine
plus feet tall. Many are described to have brown, black
or reddish hair, incredible strength and speed, and they have
a face that looks human but isn't quite human. And
(08:28):
there are legends in most Native American tribes that talk
about Harry Wildman. The name Sasquatch, which is another name
for Bigfoot, is derived from the word sasquets from the
Halkamelm language, and Washington State is also the home to
the Battle of the Ape Canyon, where a prospector named
Fred Beck and his crew endured an all night assault
on their cabin by a group of angry bigfoot after
(08:51):
one of the prospectors on his crew took a shot
at some seven foot tall Harry Ape Man off in
the distance and some of the first cast it. Allegedly
legit big foot tracks came from Washington State as well,
known as the Cripplefoot tracks. In nineteen sixty nine in
the town of Bossburg, they showed that the creature that
made the tracks had a foot that was pretty messed up,
and later that same year Scottmania County, Washington enacted a
(09:14):
law making it illegal to hunt bigfoot. Now there's also
the Paul Freeman footage taken in the late nineteen eighties
that is one of the best pieces of video bigfoot
evidence out there, and more recently, there's the Olympic Project
out on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, which has
been gathering very compelling evidence that Bigfoot might just be
(09:35):
out there. Next up is Oregon, and I'm going to
talk about a creature which has been requested of me
to talk about for quite some time, and that is
the gumber This one comes from the fearsome creatures of
Lumberjack War and is described as looking like a massive,
hairless black bear. In fact, the only hair on it
are its prominent eyebrows and some bristly hairs on its shin.
(09:58):
Its hide is said to be dark, smooth, and extremely tough,
making it practically impervious to any kind of projectile. And
while it may be immune to all of that, it
does have one weakness, which is fire. And according to
the lore, there are so few gumberous left in the
wild because of forest fires, and when they do get
caught in a fire, it's said that they pretty much explode.
(10:20):
It's said that Lumberjacks would speak of hearing what sounds
like a huge tree falling in the distance, and then
detecting the smell of burning rubber in the air after
an unfortunate gumberu met its fate. Another interesting piece of
that lore says that if anyone ever took a picture
of a gumbaru, the photo negatives apparently would explode as well.
(10:40):
Gumberous are also said to have a massive appetite and
could eat a whole horse in one sitting. Anyway, this
one is definitely a pretty funny story, even though it's
just a tall tale. Moving on to the next date,
we have Idaho. Now, Idaho's cryptid is called Charlie, or
as some call it, Slimy Slim or the Twilight Dragon.
(11:01):
It's said that you can find Sharlie in the pristine
waters of pay At Lake near McCall, Idaho. Basically, Charlie
is described as a massive serpent like beast, and people
have been reporting some mystery creature in that lake since
at least the early nineteen hundreds. However, Native American tribes
of the area have stories dating back long before European
(11:21):
settlers arrived in the area, speaking of an evil spirit
that dwelled in the lake. The first modern documented sighting
occurred in nineteen twenty when a group of workers cutting
railroad ties reported seeing what they thought at first was
a log, but then the log moved and they realized
that it was a living creature with a long neck
and a series of humps moving through the water. Later on,
(11:43):
between nineteen forty four and nineteen forty six, another sighting happened,
where several groups of people witnessed it, describing this lake
monster being thirty to forty five feet in length, with
a dinosaur type head pronounced jaws, humps like a camel,
and a shell like skin. Now sightings continue to this day,
and although many believe Charlie is just a giant sturgeon
(12:04):
or another large fish, others think that something much more
mysterious could be lurking within the lake's depths. Next up
is the state of Nevada, and here we have another
lake monster, this time in the deep cold waters of
Lake Tahoe. It's here that it's said that a creature
that's as mysterious as it is elusive lifts one and
only Tahoe Tessi, and very much like most lake monsters,
(12:27):
Tahoe Tessi is described as a large serpent like creature
with a dinosaur like head, long neck, thick body, smooth
jet black to turquoise skin, with a long tail and
flippers similar to that of the famous bloch Ness monster
in Scotland. Now sightings of Tesi date back to the
Native American tribes in the area long ago, like the
(12:48):
Washo and the Payu, and according to the story it
may reside in an underwater tunnel beneath a landmark known
as Cave Rock. In the nineteen fifties, two off duty
cops were out on the lake and report it's seeing
a mysterious black hump rise from the water, going as
fast as their speedboat, and in the decades that followed,
other witnesses have come forward saying that they've seen this
(13:10):
creature feeding on schools of fish or that it's anywhere
from thirty to sixty feet long. Divers have also reported
a massive animal quickly swimming by them near underwater caves
within the lake, and people continue to spot Tahoe Tesi
to this day. Moving on to the state of Utah,
we have Old Brini, which is another lake monster said
to live in the Great Salt Lake. But this is
(13:32):
a bit different than the plesiosaur type serpentine lake monsters
that we've been covering already.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
No.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Old Brini is said to be a gigantic shrimp, also
known as the Great Brine shrimp. Some think that this
cryptid is related to the North Shore Monster, which was
another aquatic mystery creature sighted in the Great Salt Lake
in the mid eighteen hundreds. Basically, Old Briny looks like
a horrifically enlarged version of the lake's native shrimp species,
(14:00):
Temia selina, and sightings describe it being anywhere from the
size of a dog to the size of a horse.
It's often depicted with a reddish pink exoskeleton and large
tentacle like appendages on its face. Some suggest that it
may have evolved from a species of Anomalocarus that lived
during the Cambrian period, when the ancient Lake Bonneville covered
(14:22):
close to half of what is now the state of Utah,
and interestingly, the amount of Anomalocarus fossils found around the
Great Salt Lake could potentially support a species like this existing.
Although the size of a horse is pretty big and
a little bit unrealistic, but I do have to think
about the power that something that size could have, thinking
(14:44):
of something like a mantis shrimp. Moving on, we're heading
over to the state of Montana and it's there that
they have it encryptid called the shunka war Achin, and
this guy is described basically as a large wolf like
creature and its name means carries off dogs. The shunka
Warakeen has been part of Native American folklore for centuries,
(15:05):
and some speculate that the legends may have originated from
encounters with dire wolves or the extinct American Hyaena. Now
the creature gained notoriety in the late eighteen hundreds when
a rancher by the name of israel Amin Hutchins shot
and killed one of these animals that was attacking his livestock.
The specimen was then taxidermied by Joseph Sherwood and displayed
(15:26):
in a local museum for years, where it was called Ringdocus.
The hunka waraken is often associated with livestock killings and
is believed by some to be a surviving member of
an extinct species or a previously unknown predator, and to
this day, occasionally an unidentified canid type animal comes around
and starts decimating local livestock populations. It might just be wolves,
(15:50):
but maybe there is something out there that we thought
was extinct and is still surviving to this day in
small isolated pockets. Next up is Wyoming, that is home
home to probably one of the most famous and enduring
legends of the American West, that of the Jackalobe. This
cryptid is basically described as a small rabbit like creature
(16:10):
with antelope horns, often seen bounding across the prairie. Campfire
stories were told of cowboys sitting around the fire at night,
singing songs to which they could hear the jacolobes in
the distance, trying to mimic their voices, and while they
weren't dangerous, they would take any open opportunity to steal
pioneer's whiskey, which would make them easier to hunt. Ironically, now,
(16:33):
the town of Douglas, Wyoming, is said to be the
jacolobe capital of America, and according to legend, the first
sighting of one actually happened there back in eighteen twenty nine,
and they've even got a Jacolobe statue in town. And
since then, many fake taxidermid jack rabbits were made and
can be found in many places all over the state
of Wyoming and America in general. Now, Jacolobes just might
(16:57):
actually be real. However, the the story is actually an
unfortunate one, as it turns out, jackrabbits can occasionally contract
the chop papillomavirus, which causes them to grow these antler
like tumors all over their body and even on their
head as well, which gives them the appearance of the
classic jackalobe. Now this may have inspired the whole story
(17:19):
to begin with for early settlers who had no idea
what they were looking at. Next up on the list,
Colorado and this is a wild one and kind of
a favorite for people. This is another fearsome critter, this
time which is none other than the slide rock bolter. Now,
this enormous beast is said to live on the steepest
slopes of the Rocky Mountains waiting for the perfect moment
(17:42):
to strike. The slide rock Bolterer is said to have
this massive whale like body with a huge mouth, beady eyes,
and a fluked tail. According to the lore, once potential
prey walked into the path of the slide rock Bolterer,
it would let go of the mountain peak that it
was clinging to, letting gravity take over and take it
down the mountain side at breakneck speed, gobbling up everything
(18:04):
in its path, from trees to boulders, wildlife, and especially
its favorite thing, groups of tourists. And afterwards, it would
use the hooks on its flute tail to climb back
up to its perch on the closest mountain peak. Now,
my favorite part of this story is that a forest
ranger was said to have wanted to take down the
(18:26):
local menace of the slide rock bolterer. So he put
together this stuffed dummy, and he filled it up with
gunpowder and fulman it caps and put it in the
path of where a slide rock bolterer could be. Sure Enough,
the bolt took the bait, and when it collided with
the dummy, the bolt exploded, to which the explosion flattened
(18:49):
half of the town of Rico, Colorado, which was never rebuilt,
and fed the local vulture population for an entire summer.
Moving on, we've got the state of can which is
said to be the home of Sinkhole Sam. According to
the story, in the nineteen twenties, two men went fishing
on Lake Inman one day, and while no fish were found,
(19:10):
a massive beast suddenly burst out of the deep end
of the lake, which was called the Big Sinkhole. Naturally,
this caused the two fishermen to flee. Sometime later, two
other men, Albert Neufeld and George Raeger, were hanging out
at the lake. When the two caught a glimpse of
this mystery beast. They described it as looking like a
giant fifteen foot worm or a snake that was as
(19:34):
round as a car time. Interestingly, a similar creature was
also reported fifty miles south in Kingman State Lake as well.
Now some believe this creature was something prehistoric that may
have come out from an uncharted cave system under Kansas
that was connecting different areas. At one point, Sinkhole Sam
was written about by someone calling themselves Ernest Dewey and
(19:57):
his assistant, who was named doctor Erasmus co Wattlebom, where
they identified this mystery creature as something called a fupin Girkle,
which was totally made up. And it's possible the whole
thing was made up as well, as there were no
further sightings of Sinkhole Sam after the nineteen twenties. But
perhaps if it was real, this creature just moved into
another lake or eventually succumbed to old age. We'll probably
(20:22):
never know either way. The town of Inman still celebrates
Sinkhole Sam to this day, real or not, during their
annual Santa Fe Days festival. Next up is the state
of Nebraska, which has the Alkali Lake Monster or the
Walgren Lake Monster now. This cryptid lives in the remote
sand Hills area of the northwest part of the state,
(20:43):
outside of the town of Hay Springs. The Alkali Lake
Monster is often depicted as this massive alligator like creature
which somehow lives in this tiny body of water now
according to the lore. In nineteen twenty one, locals began
to report seeing this oversized creature in Alkalai Lake, a
popular Nebraska destination for locals and tourists at the time,
(21:05):
which is now called Walgren Lake. The monster was described
as being forty feet long, with rough gray brown skin
and a large horn between its eyes and nose. Sightings
were sparse, however, in nineteen twenty three, a man named
Ja Johnson and his two friends claimed that they had
a terrifying encounter with this creature. While camping on the
shores of Walgren Lake. The three men saw some massive
(21:29):
beast in the water sixty feet from shore. They compared
it to a giant alligator with a rhinoceros like horn
on its head. The creature then noticed them and began
to thrash its tail violently before disappearing beneath the surface.
And after this, the creature was never seen again. Some
think it was nothing more than a massive catfish or
(21:49):
a mudpuppy, or that it was all just a hoax. Now,
let's talk about the state of South Dakota. In the
Black Hills, they're said to be a humanoid creature known
as the Takohee. The name taco He is from the
Lakota language and means big man, and it's said to
be a guardian spirit that protects the land from invaders.
Now it's described as a large, hairy humanoid, very similar
(22:12):
to Bigfoot, but with some key differences. The Takuhee is
said to be much more aggressive than its Bigfoot cousin.
Many have also reported seeing this Takuhe wearing a top hat.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
Now.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
Modern day sightings of the Takuhi began in the nineteen seventies. Incidentally,
while a movie crew was scouting filming locations for a
zombie movie near Sikahala, they wound up finding these massive
humanoid tracks in the dirt and wound up interviewing a
number of locals about it and found out that there
was this Bigfoot like creature which had been seen in
(22:45):
the area recently. The sightings of Takuhi continued through nineteen
seventy seven, and some even blamed mysterious livestock killings on
this creature, and some also speculated that this creature may
have been related to a flap of ufo side that
South Dakota was experiencing at the time. And to this day,
people still think that the Takuhi is lurking out there,
(23:08):
but what it is we don't know exactly. Next up,
of course, is North Dakota.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Now.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Compared to the other states, North Dakota doesn't have a
ton of stuff going on for cryptids, but there are
some prevalent legends of a creature or entity known as
the Minawasha tu. This being comes from Native American folklore
and it's said to live within the Missouri River, hence
its other name the Missouri River Monster, and what it
(23:33):
looks like is really something else. According to the legend,
it's described as this eight foot tall humanoid buffalo creature
with this reddish fur, cloven hoofs clod hands, and it
has jagged spines running down its back. It also has
a horn on top of its head, and to top
it off, this thing is a cyclops. Now, according to
(23:53):
Mandan tribal folklore, the Minawaha two is said to be
a river spirit that's responsible for breaking up ice during
the spring so that the Missouri River may freely flow
again and provide access for fishing and drinking water. And
according to the legend, you don't want to run into
this thing, however benevolent it might be for nature. There
(24:14):
is one story where a man witnessed the Minawasha two
and went insane. The man somehow made it home, but
became restless and collapsed to the floor, writhing in pain
until his body just gave out and he died. Now,
if the story was true, it's possible that he consumed
something in the wild that poisoned him, or maybe the
(24:35):
Minawasha two is based on the story of a real
creature and that perhaps is still out there today. All right,
we're going into the final ten and we're going to
be starting to get into some really wild cryptids, creatures,
and legends, So stay tuned to the and folks. Next
(24:59):
up is the state of Minnesota, which, of course we
have to mention the wendigo. And while this is not encryptid,
it is one of the most feared creatures in Native
American folklore, and its legend is deeply rooted in the
Great Lakes area and the culture of Minnesota and the
Algonquin peoples, whose stories date back long before European settlers
(25:22):
arrived in the Great Lakes region. According to the lore,
the wendigo are described as gaunt, tall, emaciated humanoids with sunken,
glowing eyes, gray skin, no lips, and an insatiable hunger
for human flesh. In some stories, they can grow up
to fifteen feet tall or more depending on how many
humans they've consumed, and they're also typically found in the
(25:45):
most remote and cold wildernesses during winter months. Now wendigoes
are said to have some frightening abilities, such as being
able to mimic the voice of a loved one or
someone in need of help in order to lure you
into their trap. And quick side note, you can forget
about the antlers too, for a more accurate depiction. Those
were added at some point as an artistic interpretation of
(26:08):
these entities. They were never described in the lore as
having antlers. At the core of it. The wendigo is
said to be the embodiment of greed and starvation, and
according to the legend, anyone who resorted to the taboo
of cannibalism in the harsh winter months, risked becoming a
weendigo by getting possessed by the evil wendigo spirit, and
(26:29):
they're then doomed to wander the wilderness in search of
their next meal for eternity. Next up is the state
of Iowa and one of my favorite cryptid stories that
of the Van Meter Visitor. Now here's what happened. In
September and October of nineteen oh three, the residents of
the small town of Van Meter, Iowa, were apparently terrorized
by a strange creature now known as the Van Meter Visitor.
(26:53):
According to the story, this creature descended upon the town
out of nowhere, striking fear into everyone who lived there.
A man named Ulysses Griffith, who was the local doctor
in town, was actually the first person to witness this cryptid.
He was woken up in the middle of the night
to a bright light shining through his bedroom window, and
when Ulysses went outside to investigate the source of this light,
(27:16):
he saw this large and unknown flying creature perched on
a nearby telephone pole. He described it as a leathery,
bat winged creature with a long beak, and it had
this horn on its head, which was emitting this blinding light. Now,
several other townsfolk would report seeing the same creature over
the following days, and whenever it left the area, it
(27:36):
left behind massive three toed tracks and a horrendous stench
in its wake. The van Meter visitor is often depicted
as some kind of pterodactyl, which is interesting because dinosaurs
went extinct sixty five million years ago, so where would
this thing have come from?
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Now?
Speaker 1 (27:53):
This mystery creature was spotted by multiple townsfolk over the
course of a week, and some locals even tried to
take matters into their own hands after this thing was
seen peering into windows and just being a general menace.
And of course, some people tried shooting at this creature,
but it was said to be impervious to bullets. Either
that or people had terrible aim. Eventually, the townsfolk had
(28:16):
it with this creature and gathered a large posse together
and they were able to track the creature down to
a nearby abandoned coal mine. And as the posse prepared
to battle the beast at the coal mine entrance, a second,
smaller creature came out of the mine, and the story
goes that the townsfolk opened fire with everything that they had,
but whatever they were dishing out with firepower had no
(28:38):
effect on these creatures, and after a few moments, both
of the visitors were treated back into the mine. Now
the following day, however, the townsfolk, not wanting to give up,
rigged dynamite all around the entrance and blasted the mine
entrance shut, apparently trapping these creatures in there forever Now,
nobody knows for sure what the these creatures were. Were
(29:01):
they from the Hollow Earth, was there a time slip
going on, were they interdimensional beings? Or maybe it was
all just a hoax. In the end, we'll never know
for sure. This next one is just such a weird
and interesting story, and we're going to be talking about
the cryptid for Illinois. Over fifty years ago, the town
of Enfield, Illinois, underwent a bizarre series of encounters with
(29:24):
something that was truly out of this world. The cryptid
in questioned was the Enfield Horror. The story goes that
in the early evening of April twenty fifth, nineteen seventy three,
a young boy who lived in the town named Greg
Garrett was playing in his backyard when he was suddenly
confronted with this unrecognizable creature. After managing to escape the
(29:44):
clutches of this thing, Greg ran inside, claiming that he
was attacked by a monster. To his parents, Greg described
this thing as having three legs along with gray, slimy
skin clawed hands, and it had these large, reddish pink
eyes and stood about four and a half feet tall.
According to the story, the Enfield horror started stomping on
(30:04):
his feet, tearing up his tennis shoes. The encounter that
really put this cryptid on the map, though, happened later
around nine point thirty PM, which was with one of
Greg's neighbors, a man named Henry McDaniel. He and his
family had a rather dramatic face off with this thing. Now.
Henry had returned home with his wife to find their
two kids hiding inside completely terrified. His children said that
(30:27):
a quote thing had tried to break into the house
through their door and through a window which had an
air conditioner in it while Henry and his wife were
out on a date. Henry figured it was probably some
known animal like a raccoon or something, so he went
to open the front door to check the porch to
see if anything was out there, and sure enough there was.
(30:48):
The second he opened the door, he found himself face
to face with this horrid beast. It was the same
red eyed, three legged monster that Greg Garrett had described
from an hour earlier. Shocked at what stood before for him,
Henry slammed the door shut and stumbled over to his
closet where he kept his twenty two pistol in a flashlight.
Hoping that he was just imagining this beast, Henry went
(31:10):
back to the front door, armed and ready and opened
it one more time, and much to his dismay, the
creature was very real and very much still standing there
waiting for him. Henry then fired a shot point blank
at this creature, and he didn't miss, but all the
creature did was hiss. Henry then fired four more rounds,
(31:31):
which made this monster retreat, bounding off and across the
street in just a few leaps before disappearing into the
brush near some railroad tracks. The police were then called
in to investigate and wound up apparently finding scratches on
the siding of Henry's house along with strange dog like
prince in his yard. Except they had six toepads and
(31:52):
there were also three distinct tracks, suggesting that this creature
did indeed have three legs, and this wasn't the last
encounter that Henry Who would have with this creature, although
the final one is a bit anti climactic. Eleven days later,
on May sixth, he was woken up in the middle
of the night by the sound of the neighborhood dogs
barking wildly. Henry then grabbed his pistol again just in case,
(32:13):
and stepped outside to see what was going on, and
off in the distance he could see the Enfield Horror
meandering down the nearby train tracks, never to be seen again.
So what was the Enfield Horror? Well, some think it
may have been a misidentified kangaroo that had escaped from
a zoo or exotic pet owner, while others think that
(32:33):
there may have been some kind of extraterrestrial connection, and
others think that there might have been an occult ritual
involved that summoned some kind of creature, but will probably
never know exactly what this thing was. It is a
very fun story, though. Next up is the state of Missouri.
Who was cryptid is the Missouri Monster or Momo for short,
(32:54):
So of the sightings of Momo, which happened during the
early nineteen seventies. This heard in the small town of Louisiana, Missouri,
which is right on the banks of the Mississippi River,
and local residents started to claim that there was a tall, hairy,
humanoid beast lurking around town, terrorizing people and killing their pets.
Now Momo is basically another variant of Bigfoot, and eyewitnesses
(33:17):
described him as being seven feet tall. He was also
very muscular, hairy, super smelly, very much an ape like creature,
with glowing red eyes and a pumpkin shaped head which
many think that this was a big, full head of hair,
and interestingly, rather than a humanoid footprint, those who saw
tracks or even casted them were apparently finding that this
(33:41):
Momo creature only had three toes. There was one encounter
where two young women were having a picnic and Momo
came barreling out of the nearby woods. The two women
were terrified and ran to their car and then watched
Momo eat their food before they scared him off by
blasting it with the car's horn. And the most well
known sighting occurred on July eleventh of nineteen seventy two,
(34:04):
when two young boys the Harrison brothers, along with their
older sister, claimed to have seen Momo carrying what appeared
to be a dog in their backyard. Now, this dog,
unfortunately didn't appear to be moving, so perhaps Momo had
caught it and was bringing it back to its layer
for dinner. And sightings continued and stories of this creature spread,
(34:26):
eventually leading to twenty person posses trying to find Momo.
But in the end they came up empty handed, and
if it was a real creature, it likely moved on,
but perhaps Momo could still be lurking out there. Next
up is the state of Wisconsin. Now, there's a few
things going on in this state for cryptids, but the
most notable is the Beast of Bray Road, which is
(34:49):
said to have been cited numerous times over the years
on Bray Road and the small town of Elkhorn, and
because of that, it's probably one of the most well
documented cryptids there.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
So.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
The Beast of Bray Road is described as an upright
walking canine with a body more like that of a man,
but with a wolf like head. It has brownish gray fur,
glowing red eyes, clad hands, big teeth, and powerful muscles.
Unlike the rugaroo or you're a standard werewolf. However, the
Beast of Bray Road is believed to be a dog man,
(35:23):
which is its only state of being, as it doesn't
have the ability of lycanthropy or the supernatural ability to
shape shift, although many people do report that there is
often an eerie fog or a terrible odor in the
air which is associated with encounters and sightings of these
things now. The beast first gained notoriety in the late
(35:46):
nineteen eighties in early nineties when a series of strange
sightings and attacks were attributed to the creature, making it
probably one of the most famous American dogmen. One of
the more well known sightings happened when a woman named
Lourie was driving home around one point thirty in the
morning on Bray Road. She suddenly noticed a kneeling humanoid
(36:07):
shape on the side of the road. It was facing
away from her car, but she could see that it
had pointed ears on the top of its head, and
once she started to pass it, she could make out
the front side of this thing, and she could see
that it was covered in brownish gray fur. It also
had glowing eyes and clad hands that were holding what
looked like roadkilled. She said that it didn't look like
(36:28):
a normal four legged canine, but instead it looked like
a humanoid canine that would stand on two legs to
get around, and this thing tracked her car watching her
drive by, Laurie estimated that if this thing stood up,
it would be at least seven feet tall. Now, nobody
knows exactly what dog men are just yet, since there
(36:50):
isn't a fossil record of such creatures being able to exist,
and some people think that these things are just misidentified bigfoot,
which we also don't necessarily have fossils of. Others think
it may have been an escaped pet wolf, a large
feral dog, a bear, or even perhaps something interdimensional. I
guess we'll have to wait and see as more evidence
(37:12):
is put forward of these dogmen creatures. Next up is
the state of Indiana, which of all places, has stories
of mermaids, which are some of the oldest types of
cryptid stories out there. According to the story, witnesses began
to see these legendary creatures in the early eighteen hundreds
along the muddy banks of the Ohio River. The earliest
mention of them can be found in an eighteen thirty
(37:34):
nine issue of a Pennsylvania newspaper, which described them as
being about four feet high and covered with a light
coat of chestnut colored body hair. They were also said
to have yellowish skin, webbed hands and feet, which is
slightly different than a classical mermaid, as these were not
seen with the typical fishtail. Some think that rather than mermaids,
(37:56):
they're actually more like humanoid, amphibious lizard like creatures, but
with human faces, which I think makes a little bit
more sense versus mermaids. Now, some people believe these things
were menacing and aggressive, but most reports suggested that they
were much more shy and elusive. They were said to
(38:17):
be able to run and swim at high speeds, and
would often let out a horrendously loud screech if they
were chased by people. In the years that followed, many
people claimed to see these things around the Ohio River
and particularly in southern Indiana. As to what the mud
mermaids were, some think that they were large lizards that
adapted to an aquatic lifestyle, or they were just simply
(38:41):
washed up fish that were misidentified. Well, probably never know.
Now let's talk about Tennessee and the not deer now.
These Appalachian creatures are believed to be a newer type
of cryptid phenomena that seems to be limited by the
borders of Appalachia, and most interestingly, most of the alleged
sighting of not deer have happened in eastern Tennessee or
(39:03):
near the Appalachian Mountains. Not deer are described as looking
like a deer, but you realize that something is off
about them the longer you watch them, like their razor
sharp teeth. Not deer's movements are said to be jerky,
more like that of a baby deer, but in an
adult body. Some have reported that it looks like the
limbs are double jointed and longer than normal deer. Others
(39:27):
also report them walking around on their hind legs like
a human, which is pretty unnerving. And while deer getting
up on their hind legs is known behavior while they're
foraging for food up high or in lower tree branches,
it's usually just for a few moments. While the not
deer is said to be able to walk upright indefinitely
(39:47):
and much more like a human. Part of the lower
also says that their eyes are more front facing than
a regular deer and instead they're more human like or
predator like. Now, skeptics argue that no are simply regular
deer that got chronic wasting disease, which is a prion
disease that affects the brain. It's a very unfortunate situation
(40:10):
and condition that deer can get, and it is ultimately fatal. Now,
this very well could account for many of the alleged
sightings of not deer, But the hotspots for chronic wasting
disease aren't even really in Appalachia according to this map,
much less eastern Tennessee. So perhaps there is some strange
(40:31):
new creature lurking in the Appalachian wilderness. Either way, you
probably won't find me out there looking for not deer.
Next up is Michigan, which is the home of the
Michigan dog Man, and it's right next to Wisconsin, so
perhaps this part of the Great Lakes region could be
considered a kind of dog man Alley. This story gained
(40:51):
widespread attention in nineteen eighty seven when local Traverse City
DJ Jack O'Malley and his producer Steve Cook released a
song called The Legend, which recounted this creature's history. Although
this was done as a joke. On April Fool's Day,
people started calling into the radio station claiming that they
had witnessed this dog man creature before, and according to
(41:13):
the legend, this dog man appears in a ten year
cycle in years ending in seven. And as far as
the history and lore about the Michigan dog Man, it's
basically the same physical description as other were wolf type cryptids,
but accounts of these things date back to eighteen eighty
seven in Wexford County, when a pair of lumberjacks saw
(41:33):
what they described as an upbright canine with a wolf's
head walking around like a person. Decades later, in nineteen
thirty seven, a man named Robert Fortney was attacked by
five wild dogs outside of the town of Paris, Michigan,
and claimed that one of them stood up like a
man and walked on its hin legs. And one of
the most famous encounters, which resulted in photographic evidence, came
(41:57):
from the account of the security guard who would did
the night watch at a manufacturing plant in nineteen sixty one. Now,
this plant was near a wilderness area called the Hay Marsh,
and the security guard basically lived across the street, so
he would hang out on his porch sometimes and monitor
the place from there. One morning, around three am, he
(42:18):
heard rustling along the perimeter fence and then saw this
large shadowy figure creeping along. As he observed this figure
to make sure it wasn't a person, it came into
some street lights and he could see that this thing
was not human. It was this seven foot tall, hairy
humanoid beast with the head of a wolf. The security
guard then went to grab his camera and took this picture,
(42:42):
which shows what appears to be a dog man, and
after that the dog man walked back into the hay marsh.
Now dog man has become a staple of Michigan folklore,
with new sightings reported very frequently. So if you've seen one,
weave a comment below. The next state is Ohio, and
we're going to be talking about the Loveland frog Man.
(43:05):
So there are a couple of chapters to the story
of this cryptid, the first being in May of nineteen
fifty five, where the first sighting happened during the early
morning hours around three thirty am. A businessman named Robert
was driving on a stretch of road that follows the
Little Miami River on the outskirts of Loveland, suddenly he
(43:27):
saw three creatures congregating on the side of the road,
which looked not humid. Robert then pulled over and got
out of his car to observe these things for just
a few minutes. He could see that they were short,
maybe three to four feet tall. They also appeared by
pedal with grayish leathery skin, webbed hands and feet, and
they had these distinctly frog like faces with deep wrinkles
(43:50):
on the tops of their heads. And that's when one
of the creatures noticed him. It then held up this
wand looking object, which then started to shoot out sparks.
So Robert hopped in his car and quickly made a getaway. However,
that wasn't the last of it, because almost two decades later,
in nineteen seventy two, more sightings of strange frog like
humanoids were reported around Loveland, this time by the authorities.
(44:14):
On March third of that year, a police officer who
wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing an unknown creature in
the middle of the road while out on patrol at
one in the morning. At first, he thought it was
a dog, so he slammed on his brakes to not
hit it. The police cruiser's headlights then illuminated the animal
on the road, which showed that it was something crouching
(44:35):
down and not laying down. It then stood up on
two legs and was about three to four feet tall
and had this strange leathery skin. It then turned its
head to look back at the officer and then scurried
over to the guardrail on the side of the road,
where it went down the embankment and into the Little
Miami River. Two weeks later, another police officer named Mark
(44:56):
Matthews encountered a strange animal in the road as well
while out on patrol in Loveland. He thought this thing
was roadkill, so he was pulled over and preparing to
scoop it up, and then as he approached it, the
creature leapt up into a crouch position. Matthews saw what
could only be described as this reptilian looking creature, and
like the previous sighting, this thing also made its way
(45:19):
over to the guardrail on the side of the road,
but not before officer Matthews took a couple shots at
it with his side arm. Matthews missed, and this frogman
creature escaped into the Little Miami River. Now Matthews has
since claimed that his story was greatly exaggerated and that
what he likely saw was just an escaped pet lizard,
and apparently the last time the frogman was seen was
(45:41):
by a teenage couple who were playing Pokemon Go in
the area and noticed a gigantic frog creature in a
lake that they were walking by in twenty sixteen. Although
we're not sure of the authenticity of these claims and
these photos, but perhaps there are frogmen really lurking in Ohio.
Next up is the state of Kentucky, which has a
(46:02):
ton of stuff going on for cryptids and legends, but
one of the most well known cases is the Hopkinsville
Goblins or the Kelly Little Green Men. While this is
more of an extraterrestrial alien case, I can't pass this
one up. So in nineteen fifty five, in the small
town of Hopkinsville as well as Kelly, Kentucky, these towns
(46:22):
became the site of one of the most famous alien
encounters in history. On August twenty first, a man named
Billy Ray Taylor and his wife June were visiting family friends,
the Sutton family, on their farm in Hopkinsville. Including Billy.
There were eleven people total in the house five adults
and seven children, so it was a busy night.
Speaker 2 (46:41):
Now.
Speaker 1 (46:41):
Back then, houses in this area more often than not
had no running water and instead relied on handpumped wells.
So around seven pm, Billy Ray goes out to fetch
water from the well. It was then that he noticed strange,
colorful lights passing through the sky heading westward. He noticed
the lights belonged to some kind of craft, so he
(47:01):
ran back inside, thinking that he saw a flying saucer
and told everyone, and nobody believed him. That is until
an hour later when strange noises started to be heard
outside of the farmhouse. Now, Billy Ray and Elmer, who
was one of the Sutton boys, decided to check out
what was happening outside and grabbed a shotgun and a
(47:22):
rifle just to be safe. As soon as they were
out there, they saw it. It was some strange small
creature that was up near the tree line. Whatever this
thing was started walking towards them with this strange swaying motion,
almost seeming to float into fy gravity. It looked like
it was about three feet tall. It had grayish skin,
(47:44):
large eyes, pointed ears, the small mouth and nostril holes.
It also had these spindly legs and arms, and it
appeared to be wearing this silver skin tight suit. When
it got within twenty feet of them, they started to
shoot at it, which did nothing, hitting this creature, but
it sounded like their bullets and shot were rattling about
(48:05):
in a tin can and ricocheting off this thing. The
entity then flipped over and retreated back into the darkness
of the woods. Elmer's brother Solomon then came out and
they went to look for this creature, sure that they
had wounded it, but as soon as they stepped off
the covered porch, they saw another one of these gobblin
creatures perched on the porch, awning, looking down at them. Terrified,
(48:27):
they retreated back inside. At this point, everyone inside is
getting very scared because nobody knows what these things were,
and bullets didn't seem to harm them. Sometime later, one
of the Sutton brothers saw one of these creatures peering
into a window, which resulted in the Sutton boys shooting
out the window, which then caused this creature to flip
(48:49):
over and retreat just like the previous one. Now the
family could hear these things scratching around outside on the
roof of the house like they were trying to find
a way in and would periodically peek in through the
windows along the house. They didn't know how many there were,
but they thought there could be as many as twelve
to fifteen of these creatures harassing Billy Ray Taylor and
the Sutton family. Eventually, the family decided to flee, so
(49:13):
they loaded into their cars and headed into town to
the local police station. After giving their story, four city
police officers, five state troopers, three deputy sheriffs, and four
military police were dispatched to the Sutton family farm, concerned
that this was some kind of gun battle between disorderly neighbors,
and when the authorities arrived, they found no evidence of
(49:36):
unearthly creatures, but they did find evidence of gunfire holes
in the walls of the house and broken windows. The
creatures returned again at three point thirty in the morning,
prompting everyone in the house to leave the property. Now,
skeptics think this one was just a misidentified owl, but
I don't think that people would be blasting their home
(49:56):
apart after seeing strange lights in the sky and seeing
these strange alien creatures that were apparently immune to gunfire
for hours on end, either way, this is a very
wild story, definitely one of my favorites. And finally, we're
at the last state, West Virginia, which has some of
(50:16):
the most cryptid legends in America, and of course we're
going to be talking about the Mothman now. Mothman is
one of the most famous cryptids in the United States
and perhaps the world, and its legend began over fifty
years ago. And I'll be doing a deep dive episode
all about the Mothman eventually, because there are so many
(50:37):
details to this story that I can't fit here, but
for now, these are the highlights. Mothman is described as
a large humanoid bird creature with large, round, glowing red
eyes in a massive wingspan. The first sighting of Mothman
happened in clendenin West Virginia, in a cemetery on November twelfth,
(50:58):
nineteen sixty six. It said that a group of men
were preparing a grave when they saw this massive, brown
humanoid creature with wings taking off from some nearby trees.
Just three days later, north of the town of Point Pleasant,
two couples Roger and Linda Scarberry, along with their friends
step and Mary Mallette, were driving in Roger's fifty seven
(51:19):
Chevy bel Air, and they decided to drive into the
TNT area that night. The CNT area was the former
and abandoned West Virginia Ordnance Works, which was a munition
stepot during World War Two, which is today the McClintic
Wildlife Preserve now. When they were approaching the old power
plant within the TNT area, Linda suddenly saw this pair
(51:41):
of large, red, glowing eyes peering out from the darkness,
so she screamed, which got the attention of everyone else
in the car. This creature then got illuminated by the
headlights and they could see that it was this seven
foot tall humanoid bird thing with wings folded against his back.
They decided to get out of there, but that's when
the true horror began. Mothman then spread his wings and
(52:04):
chased them down Highway sixty two, and even though Roger
brought his car up to one hundred miles an hour,
Mothman kept pace with them. Eventually they lost Mothman and
after some time decided they were probably overreacting. This was
probably some known bird or animal and that they were
just seeing things. So they decided to drive back into
(52:26):
the TNT area, and sure enough, when they got back there,
this seven foot tall humanoid creature was still there waiting
for them, and this time they saw him quickly take
off into the air vertically, which is something that birds
don't really do. At that point, they decided to drive
to the local police station to give a statement about
(52:46):
what they saw, and although the police investigated the TNT area,
they didn't find any traces of anything out of the ordinary.
But that wasn't the last anyone would see or hear
of the Mothman, because for the next thirteen months, there
were over one hundred sightings and encounters with the Mothman,
as well as the men in Black, UFO sightings and
(53:07):
all sorts of high strangeness that were associated with this
cryptid now. This period of Mothman activity culminated on December fifteenth,
nineteen sixty seven, when the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant
to Ohio collapsed, claiming the lives of forty six people.
Some say that Mothman was seen around the bridge shortly
before the disaster, leading many to believe that he was
(53:29):
a harbinger of doom and had been trying to warn
people of the coming tragedy. For the previous year and
a half. Now, there's a ton more to this story,
so make sure to stay tuned for an in depth
look at the Mothman in a future episode. Now, you
thought I was done, but I decided to throw you
all a bonus cryptid, l Chipcapra. And although a lot
(53:52):
of people talk about this cryptid in the context of
the American Southwest as well as Central and South America,
we're going to be going to its point of origin,
Puerto Rico. So Elchripcabra's name in Spanish means the goat
sucker and was said to be responsible for a massive
amount of livestock mutilations on the island in the mid nineties.
(54:13):
Now Eltropicabra appeared on the scene in March of nineteen
ninety five, when each sheep were found dead and completely
drained of blood. Investigators found strange puncture wounds on the
chests of these animals, which sounds kind of like a vampire.
But elchro Picabra didn't just attack sheep. It also went
after chickens, turkeys, rabbits, cats, dogs, horses, cows, and, of course,
(54:37):
most infamously, goats, all of which would be found exanguinated
through these strange puncture wounds. Interestingly, the mid nineteen nineties
may not have been the first round of chupercabra activity.
As it turns out, in nineteen seventy five, there was
a series of livestock killings in the small town of Mocha.
Initially it was thought to be the result of cult activity,
(54:58):
but later people were imported this creature that was being seen.
It was called El vampire de Mocha, which was this
creature that was draining the blood of animals through these
two small circular incisions on their bodies. It sounds very
similar now. Those who actually claimed to have witnessed El
Chupacabra said it was a creature that looked to be
about three to four feet tall. It was somewhat reptilian,
(55:20):
with grayish skin, fangs, very large red eyes, and spines
running down its back. It also had these clod hands
and feet. Some even thought they saw it had wings
on its back and swore that they saw it flying
down from the sky and jumping over trees. Now, this
is vastly different than the chupacaba reports in the United States,
which typically describes something looking more like a coyote with
(55:44):
sarcoptic nage. Now, this thing was a lot more alien,
and some people actually speculated that it just might be
an actual extraterrestrial. Either that or it was an escaped
government experiment. At the end of the string of attacks,
El Choopcabra was blame for over one thousand livestock deaths. Now,
many people believe that Elscabrera exists, although nobody has ever
(56:06):
caught one. It's unsure if real what it ever was.
Skeptics will have you believe that this was just a
simple case of mass hysteria, perhaps inspired by the science
fiction horror movie Species, which had a very similar looking
creature that was released in nineteen ninety five, shortly before
all the reports started flooding in in Puerto Rico. So
(56:28):
perhaps that's all this was, was just mass hysteria, or
maybe there was really a creature out there. Either way,
the story of Elship Percabra is a fun story, and
there are reports of similar looking creatures still happening to
this day. All right, thank you so much for We're
(57:00):
hanging out until the end. For the conclusion to America's
Cryptid road trip, we covered fifty states plus one and
this was just a such a massive undertaking to do
all of this and also do the accompanying YouTube video
