On April 28, 2023, Miller and Hutchinson had just tied the knot in Folly Beach, South Carolina, and were being driven back to their rental home in a golf cart. At approximately 10 p.m., Komoroski, who had a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal limit and was speeding at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone, struck the golf cart from behind. The impact was so severe that the cart was thrown over 100 yards, resulting in Miller's instant death and Hutchinson sustaining a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures.

Komoroski, 26 at the time, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including felony DUI causing death, DUI causing great bodily injury, and reckless homicide. In December 2024, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison. During the sentencing, she expressed deep remorse, stating, "I want the last thing that I say to be that, from the very bottom of my heart, with every fiber in my being, how sorry I am. I take full responsibility for my actions" .

Hutchinson, in his emotional testimony, shared his grief, saying, "I think about that night every single day and the last moments I had with Sam on the golf cart. She told me she didn't want the night to end. I kissed her on the forehead and the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital" .
