(00:02):
We are live episode 31, going toget Seth in here.
We are an hour and a half late. It's all cousin Seth Hill has
joined. Kansas City Smoke has joined.
(00:24):
Was that Kansas City smoke? It's 67° in our house and you
can see my face. I'm dying right now.
Yeah, it's like what? Been in the 90s there.
Yeah, starting to be this this weekend, it's going to probably
had 100. Oh shoot, yeah, we're going to
be in the 80s, but it's not bad compared to.
(00:46):
I'm loving it though. I mean, I kind of like the heat.
It's good to get some heat affirmation in.
I'm getting my phone. I'm getting my phone set up.
So I'm apologize for all the moving.
You're all good, how you been? Don't lock the screen.
Good. I'm sure we'll talk about
Oceanside quite a bit here. But it was awesome to watch
(01:07):
that. They had some FOMO, yeah, in
there. But it was so good to see my
family. They ended up coming out.
I'm sick because I was racing. So they're planning on watching
the race. Yeah.
But it was good to cheer everyone on and it was such an
exciting race. Alright boys, it was so fun to
watch the. There we go.
I think we're all set up. Yeah, All right.
(01:29):
I was looking good. Mustache is still strong with
you. Yeah, I didn't shave that.
I I was thinking about it. If I was going to race, I would
have shaved it. But yeah, stuck with it.
I had quite a few photo shoots actually.
So for the rest of this year, you're going to see this thing
pop up in some of the feed content.
Yeah, somebody rhythm content. So we'll see some regrets there.
(01:52):
But I was worried if I shaved itI was going to have a big tan
line. Oh, you probably I will.
I didn't even think about that. Yeah, so I was like, oh man, if
I shave it's just gonna be whiteall under here.
Yeah, that's OK. Yeah, I'm already getting a lot
of this is just because I'm still really hot.
I just literally just got done with my ride.
But a lot of this is just like outdoor pool running outside.
(02:15):
It's sunny all the time here. Yeah, and it's a beautiful time
of year. It is beautiful.
Looking at leases now in Boulderthough.
It's time to migrate back up north now that it's getting hot.
Yeah, yeah, man, it's coming up.You just, you're going to be
there for how many more weeks now?
Is it 3 until Saint Anthony's and then you're?
Done. Yeah, Three.
(02:36):
I'm here until the 27th. The race is the 27th.
I fly out the 24th, I think whatever that Thursday is and
then come back here, pack up, goto Saint George and then I'll be
in Saint George for two weeks oryeah, about two weeks.
We got a lot planned with the real Tri Squad team.
A lot of our sponsors are comingdown and the it's a zoo event by
(02:59):
saddle. I'm seeing the most of the RTS
teams come in. It's going to be really fun and
pro series race, of course. So a lot of stuff to do with
that. I haven't been waving the
people. Do you want to jump into it?
We we missed the. My Internet go down.
(03:22):
Can you hear me? Yeah.
Can you hear me now? Yes, OK.
T-Mobile ad Oh, OK. Can you hear me now?
Yeah, exactly. No, I was like, I didn't know if
it was my Internet or or what. I wasn't, but it like that.
Sure, what happened? I can hear you now.
OK, perfect. Well, sweet.
Well, I'll do this feel. How about that?
(03:43):
Yep, I look, I'm looking forwardto it.
We missed it on our 30th episode.
I know #31 everybody, welcome toanother edition of Roulette
Live. This is a place where we come
together, man and friends, to talk about anything under the
sun, triathlon or not related. It's completely fine.
(04:04):
You ask questions in the comments or you can raise your
hand and we'll invite you up to ask your question face to face,
mano a mano, Yeah. That's our face.
It's been. Yeah, that's our favorite.
Would you like having people on?We do.
That's, that's kind of how it started out.
I was like, it was going to be random, inviting random people.
And it's been a little less random recently, but and we're
(04:25):
kind of going with it, yeah. Definitely a lot less random.
Usually Lisa, Justin, Nick has been busy, but we get some new
people here and there. I mean, I feel like we touched
on this a little bit back towards the beginning of when we
started this, but just like how we got built, like how we
started this. And I believe it was because I
(04:46):
was on your Your Stupid Questions podcast.
Yeah. You had already done some of the
other RTS members and we were just like, you were just like,
hey, you want to go live and like announce the announced the
interview, the podcast, right? Yeah, yeah.
And then now we did it and it was 1 episodes later. 31
episodes later and it's been such a smashing success.
We said we can't stop here. We are going to be.
(05:08):
We can't stop. Here all the way.
Eight people watching, 10 peoplewatching.
We're famous and we should invite someone on.
We're gonna do something random, get somebody random in here.
All right. See if somebody will will join.
Yakim come near wet. You invited that person.
(05:33):
Yep, he's the pro. He raced Oceanside.
He lives in good old cosmic mouth.
Oh nice, I don't think I know him.
See if he's going to accept while that's happening.
My my question for you, Mark Hope, never mind.
There he is. What's up?
What's with that? Thanks for joining.
(05:55):
Our lives nice to be here. This is yeah, Seth.
Seth, this is Yakim. Am I saying that?
I'm saying that right? I mean, it's close enough.
It's it's. How do you actually say it?
It's actually called a Joaquim with a strong J, but I mean,
it's always tough to to say it in English.
(06:15):
So walking in, walking in or anyanyways, it's it's OK.
Yeah, but how you? Doing nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too man. Well, I just arrived home.
It was a fairly long trip for anocean site back here, but yeah.
And now a couple hours ahead, soprobably go out for our AC run
(06:37):
and call it the day. Is it blazing hot in Cozumel
right now? Actually, no, we got we got all
like a front cold coming in. So it's around in Fahrenheit.
It should be around the low 80s maybe.
Thanks. So it's fairly, well, I mean a.
100% humidity. Yeah, I mean, it's it's going to
(07:00):
be like that from here to forever, so.
Yeah, till, till we're back downthere for our RTS Cam.
Hopefully it will. You could will come sooner or
78.3 Cosmo or Iron Man Cosmo. But I mean it's a great place to
train. I mean you already lived it.
I don't know if that's it. See if Seth already came to
(07:20):
Cosmo once or not. No, Seth ditched all the time.
I have for the RTS camp, but I have been there for when I got
married. So yeah.
But it's a beautiful area. Next year I will go to the RTS
camp, but it's in the books. It's going to happen.
You heard it here. Back out.
I won't back out, but Joaquin, Iwant to.
(07:42):
I want to ask you, how is recovery going?
You're four days post race. Are you sore at all?
Are you back to normal? No, I'm a little sore on my
calves. I mean, I cannot a small injury.
I, I think I told Mark when he was back here in my groin.
So I haven't been able to put that much, that many miles in
(08:05):
it. So getting off the bike after a
puncture and running hard, I mean, it definitely paid a toll.
So today I'm a little bit sore still.
I'm I'm able to run but other than that in a small rush in my
neck. From the salt water.
I have salt water. Or went to.
(08:26):
Let's see. I mean, it's a combination.
Yeah, for sure. You say you punctured.
Yeah, I punctured around what itwas like 2525 miles sand.
I was probably in the third group and I punctured my rear
(08:46):
wheel. I was there, couple minutes
maybe and the old neutral support gave me a wheel.
Oh, they just switched your wheel for you?
Yeah, they gave me a aluminum wheel, which is kind of nice,
not having to change a tube on my.
Yeah. I kind of stuck like 1015 miles
(09:09):
like within like going hard, notgoing hard.
I mean, I my my my mind was softa bit.
Yeah, that's nice. Yeah, the end of the bike was
OK. I mean I was able to re engage
and still do a solid run all theway to a mile 10.
After that I just started to fade out You.
(09:31):
Know are you flatted on? No actually my disc wheel is
still flat. So right now my my bike is on
the on the on the case. So I will probably.
Be still in the bike box. Yeah, pretty soon.
I'm racing Texas also so I want to get that sorted out before
(09:52):
before I started training again.Yeah, we actually had a question
in here and this is perfect. Front Pack Sports asked our
thoughts on whether Iron Man is doing enough for us Pros
compared like the PTO as far as fixing flats and mechanicals.
And I think it's, you have to remember that the PTO race.
(10:13):
I'm going to talk to this front pack sports person right now
that there are multiple lap courses in the PTO, like always
an 8 lap courses. So it's really easy to have
mutual support there or or have the pros, they'll just ride it a
flat into that zone because it'sthen it's only probably a few
miles on a flat or maybe it's just losing air.
Yeah, where this course and where you flatted 25 miles out,
(10:38):
it's literally like it's a loop,like 1 loop in the base.
No other roads lead to that. Like there's no shortcuts for
anything. And there's also 70 pros.
So you have neutral support. Sounds like they didn't have any
real support at the front of therace where Christian was because
he had a weight as well. Usually I forget what they're
(10:58):
doing now. They're neutral, support middle,
a front group, and then at the end I forget how it works.
I don't, I don't know. What I do know is I think
Christian got his will and then the same motorbike just I mean
continue moving forward and eventually caught me because I
(11:19):
saw a Christian like coming backon the on the stretch of Rd.
where he flatted. I thought he was going to drop
out honestly. But I mean, it was like probably
7-8 more miles ahead where I was, I where I stopped.
And I mean, Christian was ridingsuper hard.
So he eventually caught me. And just like he, he caught me
(11:40):
on the uphill and he was just like riding super hard.
So I guess the neutral support started on the back and he was
moved his way. I would like to have more
neutral support, like at least three or four bikes.
I mean 3 or 4 motorbikes, because 75 throws well, 70, the
(12:04):
ones who didn't start it's, it'sa lot.
And of course, like Oceanside, where it's a pretty big, big
loop in the middle of nowhere where actually there's no cars
because of the base. I mean, I think PTO is far
forehead of a fireman in that inthat.
Yeah, it would be nice. I didn't realize.
Yeah, I sat in the meeting, but I didn't hear anything about the
(12:27):
neutral support. It would be nice to have like
someone like almost like the front of the race and then or
like behind the front group and then middle or moving thing and
then someone at the tail end of each pro men, pro women as well,
like the same obviously the samenumber, but I I guess so.
(12:50):
Did you carry any flap kit or anything or no?
Yeah, I mean, I do have a a tubeless on the front wheel.
I have a a little thing called Dyna plug.
Yeah, Dyna plug, that's what I carry as well.
But your rear wheel was the tubes.
Yeah, it has the tubes. So I actually was able to put
(13:11):
like a small bag, a saddle bag between the aero bars.
So it's like it's not nicely fitted in.
So I did had a tube, but I mean between the maybe the DNF thing,
maybe stopping and maybe like because when the motorbike came,
I already like dismounted the tire.
(13:34):
So I took up the wheel and I started to dismount the tire and
then the this. So I don't know if it was 3/4, I
don't know how many minutes, butI did took my time.
I mean, I wasn't doing like doing it super fast because I
mean, mentally I was a little off, but I did carried my my
(13:55):
puncture, my puncture kit. Yeah, I I guess I'm a bit lucky
with felt not to do a sponsor plug here because it has the
internal storage into the frame. We had another question I guess
on this too. Would you rather A1 loop no age
group interference or multiple loops with age group still
(14:16):
sharing the course? I would rather have no
interference. Yeah, or here.
Me too. Oh yeah, that I would prefer
that, but I do it is or or just really wide roads because it's
kind of fun going like racing. I don't know, seeing the age
groupers in a way, but no age group interference would be
(14:39):
great and we've seen so many crashes before at aid stations
or just the difference of speed and.
Feel like the run works better than the than the bike for sure.
Yeah. I mean, for example, here in
the, in Ironman, Cosmo, the second loop of the bike, it's
almost impossible to get any aidstations.
(15:01):
I mean, they're packed with ace troopers.
I I know they're racing as well. The thing is, you have to be
super prepared to to have a lot of water on you because I
couldn't do this. It's tricky to be able to get a,
a bottle of water on base station.
Although than that, I mean, it'sa super wide Rd. so it's fairly
(15:24):
safe to ride fast with the ace troopers.
But yes, I mean, it's kind of inthe middle, I guess.
Yeah, but we got another really important question here that I
think that you both should answer.
So very race specific here. What has been your worst date
story ever? We're just jumping out of
(15:46):
triathlon straight into the dating.
Well, you have you have a wife and kids, right?
I'm married, I I don't have too much to have kids.
So do you want to go first or you want me to go first for the
worst story? No, I'll throw you under the
bus. You go.
Alright, man, I don't know if I I'll have to think about this a
(16:08):
little bit. Seth, do you have one that
comes? OK, I got you.
Yeah, yeah. You know it, OK.
Alright, so this was my first ever girlfriend.
OK, her name was Abby and I was,I'm just going to draw a little
on the story here, a little context for you.
So I was I think 14 or 15, late bloomer.
I'm only 5 foot 5 now. Then I was probably less than 5
(16:29):
foot, I kid you not. And we had known each other
through kind of like this. It wasn't Boy Scouts, Girl
Scouts, but it was something similar to that that we were
both and it was Coed and we had this camporee thing coming up
and me and this girl had never really met like and hung out in
person. So we started dating like
(16:49):
online, you know, back when Yahoo instant messenger was a
thing. Anyway, so like we we're dating
for like a week and she's sending me pictures of her
riding out in this notebook. Like I love Seth and I was like,
oh, this is bad. Like this is way too fast for
me. And then so I was going to meet
her for the first time at the camp re like the week after
that, we get there and we're going to like meet where there's
(17:14):
like the guys village, girls village.
And we're going to meet at the tetherball courts.
And we go there and I break up with her.
And that was our day. And all of her girlfriends were
like, so mad at me. They were like trying to hit me
in the face with a tetherball because I like broke this broke
this girl's heart. Yeah, it was kind of funny, but
she was also like, she was like she, it seems like she was 6
(17:35):
foot, but she was like at least a foot taller than me.
And that's why you broke up withher.
I yeah, I was just, I don't know, I wasn't into it as much.
I was just like a little hormonal kid and I was like,
well, she's kind of pretty Let'slet's see what happens.
Yeah. Super shallow.
So that was probably my bad. Worst.
Like one, yeah. I don't, I guess I don't know.
(17:57):
I I if I thought about this question a bit more, I'm sure I
could think of something. You just feel like I.
Just have way too many good dates, that's all it is.
Or just you never. Had any dates?
Yeah, yeah, I guess. I don't know, like not too.
I'm sure there's some cringe worthy ones in like middle
school. I remember I had a middle school
girlfriend for like a year but like we were just scared to talk
(18:19):
to each other. Girlfriend but.
We were dating same swim team and like she.
Just looked at each other. Yeah, we just like we were
dating, but like I remember it lasted a year.
So I guess this is a good answer.
And she ended up breaking up with me over text.
She just handed the phone over the table.
(18:40):
Should I even talk to you in person when you're right there?
I think we should break up. And I just look at her, I go,
yeah. OK.
Wow, this is like 5th or 6th grade.
OK, you still that's painful. Yeah, it it.
It was like you wrote it on paper or she she handed the
(19:02):
phone with the text. Yeah, the little like flip phone
where you have to type, like if you're typing one letter and
it's the whatever, Yeah, you have to type it three times.
Yeah, multiple times. The old keyboards.
It's it's these days don't know that pain like how long it took
to type just a sentence. Actually got fast and whenever
(19:23):
it first came out, like the fullkeyboards, I was actually slower
with that. Yeah, I remember that.
But. The full keyboard was sick.
I remember I had the one that flipped up.
Yeah, the LED, whatever. Yeah.
And then you could turn it to the side and flip the keyboard.
Yeah, I remember that drawing itback, back to high school.
So Joaquim, then let me ask you this question then.
(19:45):
If you have to go, feel free. But how did you meet your wife?
We actually met a lot of years ago.
She used to swim on my swimming.I was training on a swimming
team, but she was training like more of like to to do exercise
(20:05):
more than anything. So she was there.
Might have, might have lost him.We lost him, we lost him.
So it's getting so good. It's just something about
swimming. I I've heard this.
I asked this question somewhat frequently on the podcast and
(20:27):
it's like, well, I was at the pool and I saw this beautiful
woman in this two piece bathing suit.
I saw this Strapping Young Lad in this you.
Know it's some of the odds some of those swim teams there's a
lot of like even in college there's a lot of team sets
Should we team says that's so bad that's what the team says
should we try to get him back onor.
(20:49):
I want to hear the story. We can if he's able to.
He just he left just with the cliffhanger there.
He just met her at the pool and. That's all it needed to be said.
Endurance Matters podcast is that, you know, if that's just
the. The big Mets Well, who runs the?
Account Big Mets. Is Justin and I forget the guy
(21:11):
the manager's name? He's a nice guy.
Did you invite the guy back before team?
Can I invite if he's not watching?
I think so, yeah. OK, let's see here.
Not Mets. Whoever it is, invite him on.
Oh, he's back. I apologize that he's back, He
(21:33):
requested back on. I'm going on professional here
and I'm going to fill up my water bottle and mute myself for
a second. So you go ahead and entertain
us. My butter died so.
You left us a little cliffhangerthere.
Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, well, my butter died after
(21:54):
that long trip. But I met my wife around 10
years before we started dating, actually.
So she had a boyfriend. I had a girlfriend back, back in
the day. And we just just like, became
friends. And a long, long time later, we
just started dating. And we got married actually
(22:16):
within seven months of starting dating.
Seven months. That's awesome.
It was super quick. I mean, and we've been married
for nine years now. Congratulations.
What are you going to do for thebig One O or the Big 10?
We'll probably do another another party here in customer.
So I don't know how many people are we going to invite, but
(22:40):
definitely it's going to be a big thing.
Well, we look forward to receiving an.
Invitation party is going to be lit.
Yeah, there there won't be a lotof sports related.
It will be 100% party. No, no, no planning, no
Grantler, no nothing. It seemed like you guys had a
really good crew. After the real Tri squad left,
(23:04):
Elliott came down. Lisa and I forget who else was
there, but it seems like you guys had a really good crew.
Yeah, we were around 7 people. We invited some major troopers,
some coaches. I think Lisa brought a lot of
into a table. Elliott, also with Thomas and
(23:27):
the. Thomas, That's right.
We we had a pretty good group. We actually ended up spending
time around almost three months here with Thomas.
That's crazy. Three months.
I mean, it's all about avoiding the, the cold weather.
I mean, I, I'm sure you, you suffer a bit from the cold
(23:47):
weather and. Yeah, I do, and I'm scared to.
I'm looking at starting a lease in Boulder, trying to have a
home base and it's really scaring me trying because I
don't know if I'll be able to come to Tucson for as long and
the winter and colds really scare me.
I've skipped winter for six years now.
(24:08):
This is my sixth year going. South for the winter.
Wow. Yeah, are.
There better tacos in Cozumel than Los Seras.
Yeah, there's actually a couple of new 2 new places called
Lakura Lakura, which means the and also Salamo.
(24:33):
It's from with version with TCALAN.
Those two are pretty good tacos. The thing about daceras is I
think they have a pizza with pastor, which is pork meat.
I think it's an abomination, buta lot of people love it so
probably they will try it. That's the one thing I wish we
(24:57):
did more of when we were when we're down there.
I mean it's hard to, we're at the all inclusive, but I wish we
would go out for like a dinner or a few meals to explore some
of the local cuisine in Cozumel.Yeah, I mean, I will take the
advantage and do a small announcement.
I mean, we have Cafe de Isla. Yeah, that one's so good.
(25:19):
Feel free to whenever you come to Cozumel Cafe is like is rated
the best coffee shop in the town.
Yeah. So action, yeah.
So good. I think next year when we come,
we're going to do a local cuisine tour.
I'm going to push that to Nick like, yeah, every day outside of
of the hotel for either dinner or or something.
(25:41):
Yeah, we will be happy to receive you.
And also if you want recommendations, I know a couple
very good places you can perfectout and it's great food.
We appreciate it that. Yeah, the hospitality has always
been good. Well, we'll let you go enjoy
your little shake out run. Yeah.
Nice to meet you man. Meet you too man, and feel free
(26:02):
to give me a call if you want tocome to close on them.
It's always open, it's always great.
Awesome. Thank you.
See you. We'll talk soon.
Good luck in Texas if we don't chat before.
Thanks man. Take care, OK?
Ciao. Yeah, I just somehow invited you
again. I actually don't know how to
remove you. You might have to exit yourself.
(26:25):
He's gone. Oh, he is.
Yeah, yours must be lagging a little bit.
Yeah, mine's lagging. I was going and it just kept
saying invite invite. Whoops, whoops.
I'm sorry. He's still on the screen.
He is, He's not for me. Weird.
Yeah, set. My phone's freaking out.
(26:47):
Then I got that. Tucson Internet man, what are
you gonna do? I know.
So we were actually doing the Xfinity hotspot, Yeah, it was
pretty good. Yeah.
Can you hear me? Yeah.
OK. So I don't know why he's still
on the screen, but yeah, we've been doing the Xfinity hotspot,
which is wild and it's been really good so.
(27:08):
Yeah, it's like you don't have. A router in the house or
anything it just I don't even know where it comes from.
Yeah, it's probably like out in the on the street poles.
Somewhere I guess that could make sense.
I mean, it's there's been like one or two days where it's gone
out, but it's $10 a month, that's it.
Yeah, yeah, it's not bad. And they only needed my Social
(27:31):
Security and all my bank information.
Your prior relations to a different.
Yeah, my dog's name. This is my the street I grew up
on. Yeah, Oh, speaking.
You have family. And even though you didn't
really mention family, tell me about your your little niece,
(27:52):
nephew, niece and nephew and this one.
Came out to Oceanside, was my niece.
She's almost two years old. Yeah.
I was, like, seeing family. Yeah, so good.
And so, like, not race thing obviously sucked, like I was
saying at the beginning of this, but I was able to spend so much
more time with them because I didn't care to.
Like, I was obviously training alot still, but I could be out
(28:14):
late. Yeah.
Go out to dinner instead of worrying about like a bit more
about being off my feet or what I ate or like, yeah, just
overall energy conservation. So it's so good to see her.
She went to Disney. Is it Disney World?
Out in California, it's Disneyland.
I was mixed set up Disneyland the day before I saw them and I
(28:35):
guess she absolutely loved it. And then she was loving the
beach. And yeah, she's just such a fun
age. My my sister-in-law, Kristen
made her a little like Mark the shark shirt.
And on the back it said my uncle's faster than you or yeah,
I think that's what it said. My uncle is faster than you.
(28:57):
So obviously the everyone like there I was joking that it
should have said like my uncle'smore injured than you.
But yeah, so she's super cute. And then yeah, I do have a
nephew as well. My sister just had a her first,
it's been 3 months now. So I'm sure when I see him in
(29:18):
person he's going to be like 4 times the size.
Nice. Yeah, they're growing fast.
Growing fast, but my parents came out and I'll see them again
and that's in Saint Pete for Saint Anthony's in three weeks.
They're retired, so they're ableto come travel and they've met
quite a few of my like of the RTS parents or of just people I
(29:39):
raised a lot. All of their parents who come to
the come to races occasionally. So it's a little, it's kind of
fun for them because they get out, hang out with all of my
friends or team or teammates parents while they're watching.
Yeah, get the community rolling.That's.
Cool was like club swimming growing up.
It was kind of a party for the parents.
Like all the kids were swimming. But the party, the parents are
(30:01):
like living it out. We're asleep, they're out
partying, we're on back and forever.
Moses. Yeah, that's super fun, man.
It's crazy. It's already almost Saint Pete
again. Dude, I can't believe we're
almost done in Tucson again. Year 3 for me.
Yeah, it's wild. When are you going to make the
final decision on a lease in Boulder?
(30:23):
Like, are you considering one right now?
Yeah, like within the next week probably I'll have to do it.
It's tough, right. And I mean, I hate those
decisions are always the hardestbecause it's, it's where there
all will have to be essentially for 12 or I mean, I might even
do in like an 18 month lease. Yeah.
(30:45):
That's the thing. We could probably help you find
somebody to fill it or a couple of bodies to fill it over the
winter. Yeah, it's just the winter that
I'm worried about. I obviously want to be in
Boulder through the summer, and even the fall is fine, but it's
just like seeing people in tights and jackets.
Even this week in Boulder, I'm like, dude, I can't do it.
(31:05):
You're so spoiled now so. Boiled and you know, it would
almost be fine being in Tucson majority of the time, but I love
the training in Boulder as well.Yeah, like the training is
definitely better. You get the altitudes as well.
Mm hmm. Altitude's nice.
I found my own little version ofaltitude this last week.
I got the climb up to 4000 feet.It was amazing.
(31:28):
This old road. Nobody 4000 drop them 4000 up to
4000 feet. Yes, it's not yours. 8010
thousand. But around here, I mean, I'm
like, I'm sitting at 500 feet right now.
Yeah, it's true. Better than nothing.
But I'm going to go up to Shastahere as it gets a little warmer
and met last and stuff and they're up 8 to 14.
(31:49):
Obviously 1414's the peak I you're not going to bike up
there, but you can get up to like I think. 12 You're going to
bike up to it, lock your bike up, and then hike the rest.
We are going to ascend the mountain before I leave.
We have some professional Mountaineers around here and
they try to do it once a year. There's a few routes you can do.
(32:11):
One of them it's pretty simple. The other one actually, you have
to do a rope team and whatnot, but we probably won't do the
rope team because that's, well, I'll sketch you.
I don't want to fall into a crevasse and die so.
Yeah, don't do that. We got Nick Bondji requesting to
join. We'll get him on here, see if we
can keep it closer to PG rated. Judging by the profile picture,
(32:32):
this is an interesting guy. What is that thing?
It's like a Cabbage Patch doll. That's like, yeah, you'll have
to ask him a proto hair. I still have Yeah, King's video
up. Really.
That's so weird. Yeah, it must be a.
Glitch because I don't see it isNick.
Nick requested to join. I don't know what's going.
On I feel like Nick has been on before.
(32:54):
Has he? He's been on quickly, all right.
I just invited him. All right, now we're going to,
we're going to get to know him. Give us, give us the the
SparkNotes of who this gentlemanis before he gets on.
Oh, man, SparkNotes. Let's just say it's hard not to
have a good time with Nick Bongiaround.
Yeah, I used to call him Nick Bongi, but it's really
(33:16):
pronounced Bongi. We first met each other through
the art, through my coach. We were coached by James
Peterson, who I'm still with, and he was from Boston when I
was up in New Hampshire, and then he joined us down in
Florida for one of the winters down there and now.
I hear remember this was in Denver.
(33:37):
And haven't caught up in a while, but me, him and Evan
would, yeah, I mean everyone. So I'll get together, play some
bocce ball I love. Bocce.
Dude, it's so much fun, but you got to play the real like the
better way. What's the better way?
I don't know Evan Colbert's rules.
It's called poison. Like what?
(33:58):
You throw the bocce at someone and then.
Similar to the regular rules, just a bit more extreme.
Well, it doesn't look like he's going to jump in.
No, I don't. I don't know if it's glitching
for him or what. I.
Don't know you need a Mike Foley.
Is this Trevor's dad? I'm not sure where that is.
We should invite him on because he has a picture of Trevor it.
(34:19):
Must be it might be Trevor's dad.
Let's see. Yeah, we can get there inside
Scoop. Whatever, was on here for a
little bit. There we go, he joined.
Nick. It's Seth.
Right it is. Yes, I have a slight
recollection from you can't forget that face.
(34:40):
Dude, we yeah, I've been on the show before.
I heard you talking about my Instagram.
Yeah, please tell the story. There's not much story to it,
truthfully. I just keep my profile private
and if someone looks me up like they don't really know that it's
me, so that's some of the reasonbehind it.
(35:01):
And then like I love to screw around with people on the
Internet. So I posted that and I tagged my
friend in it as if it's it's noteven funny.
If there's no funny story, it's dumb.
I have dumb humor. So that we would prank.
We try to prank Nick all the time because he pranks other
people. Instagram, What's up?
(35:24):
I didn't hear what? She said what?
How are you? That is a cute dog.
We just got him. He's 12.
Wow, He's he's a lot. Yeah, what kind of dog is this?
It's a it's a mini dog. Is that the one that Alexi
Vermeulen has? Is that the same kind of dog?
It's. A weener dog.
(35:45):
So if that's what that is. Take a weener dog, but with long
hair. Yeah, he's got long hair, but
it's he's. Not long hair A.
Just tell Mark Mark's met my Mark's met my, that's my my
wife, Maddie. I just saw you guys on and I was
like hell, I'm going to join. Yeah, so glad you did.
(36:06):
What are you guys up to? Talking about you?
Yeah. What was this?
How's the? How's the?
Injury, man, it's coming. I'm coming back slowly.
Just ran 45 minutes pain free yesterday.
Nice, that's good. And yeah, it was 3 days in a row
of running sounds really good. I'll take a day off today and
(36:28):
tomorrow and then maybe do another three days of running,
so should be all set. Your Achilles?
No, it's not my Achilles. It's the two tendons on the side
of your calf, the Peronius brevis and the Peronius longus,
now that I know those. Pepperonius longus.
Yep. Is that how does that happen?
Is that from like a specific injury over usage?
(36:50):
Weak weak supporting muscles? I think all the above,
unfortunately, I've been doing alot of just, yeah, some
strengthening and then a little bit of stretching, but mostly
just trying to use the PT has been doing a lot of like big
toe, like working on using that big toe, more big toe.
(37:11):
So my big toe is getting shredded right now.
I'm doing a lot of lifting with the big toe.
Like Bambi got ABS. On it now, Yeah, it's got a six
pack. Remember, you have a pretty wack
looking big toe. You are.
Chemically put it on only toes right here.
Let's see it. Only toes.
How do I switch this? I'm going to screen.
(37:33):
I was just joking. Hey, you know what is you know
what is wack is his mustache. Stuff like that.
It's pretty good. It's pretty thick.
Dude that is so much bushier than I thought.
I. Could get.
I know he's. Gonna look the high profile.
Have you ever if you eat eggs like sunny side up?
(37:55):
Dude in there. It's yeah, it's gotten to the
point where it's really annoyingto eat swimming.
I can feel it. Smells funny if you don't watch.
It, dude, if you're going to rock it, then you got to go full
Aussie and you're going to Mull it.
Coming next, Yes. I don't know if I would ever
have a mullet because I want, I don't want that much hair.
(38:18):
I want to stay cool. Oh dude, you got to look like a
douche year round with that. All right, so let's say injury
according to plan gets better. What's next?
But. That's now it's just being smart
with it. Like is it smart to race St.
Anthony's and Saint George if everything goes as planned?
(38:38):
And I think it's OK, not ideal because it's three weeks out for
Saint Anthony's, I guess, or no,yeah, three weeks.
So that's kind of tight. So we'll see.
We'll see about those two races. So that kind of happened in the
air, though. Yeah, up in the air, actually.
I don't want to, like, mess up my season.
Yeah, that's smart. Are you still planning on doing
(39:00):
plastic? Yeah, I'm obviously really
nervous about it. Like I've always been nervous
about a full, regardless of getting the injury.
And now that I'm injured, it's like it makes me even more
nervous. Snoopy just said to me he goes,
Mark, don't be a Wiener like me.All right, you.
Got to do it. I'm signed up for I'm I'm locked
in for California full. And a nice sober I think I'm
(39:24):
doing. I got it, I'm doing it too. 90%
sure I'm going to do it, yeah. Oh hell yeah.
But you, I got a good, I got a good story for the triathlon
podcast. Yeah, it's it's something that I
did in that weekend that I'm completely ashamed of.
So let's just put it on Instagram.
Live so we have 5 people. I want people listening.
(39:49):
Yeah, who is listening? Josh Vernon?
I don't, I don't know any of these people.
Mike. Who's Mike Foley?
Center's dad, I think like. Adler you know, Oh, people.
Yeah, we don't have. To OK, dinner's ready.
OK, I gotta, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go through the story quick
and I'm gonna jump. OK.
(40:10):
I'm so excited. I trained for Texas 70.3.
I went all the way there. The swim gets cancelled, It's
Gale force winds, it's raining pretty hard.
It's cold, like woes me, right? Half the field leaves.
So I'm standing there and I'm like, this is sucks.
(40:30):
It's now a duathlon. This doesn't even feel like a
race. And then some volunteers like,
hey, like if you don't race, youcould defer your race entry to
another race. Been doing this since 2014.
I've never once considered backing out of a race.
And in that moment I'm like, OK,I'll do it.
Well, I backed out, didn't race, flew all the way home and was
(40:52):
like, what the F did I just do? I literally flew all the gal all
the way to Galveston to not raceand then only to find out that I
can't actually defer my race entry into another race.
So on the way back to the from the air to the airport, I called
Mark and I was like, dude, do you know anyone on Iron Man?
Like I figured he would know someone.
(41:13):
He doesn't. So I signed up today for Gulf
Coast in three weeks. But yeah, I flew all the way to
Galveston to not race. Like what a little bitch you.
Can't defer because it's the weather, right?
It doesn't even matter if you could defer or not.
I can't defer. Iron Man won't let me but like.
What a complete. Loser move.
How did the volunteer like, get that right?
(41:36):
I'd be like, get that on recording.
My goodness. On me for letting a local
volunteer tell me Iron Man corporate policy.
Right, they have no idea. They have no idea.
They're just, they're just locals.
I got to go. I got to eat dinner.
For dinner? Quick question, what are you
having for dinner? Just show.
(41:58):
OS. 8 O Nice. Baby.
We've got some burgers. Meat, potatoes, avocado, cottage
cheese. Honey.
Hot honey, hot sauce and great. That looks delicious, but I made
the whole life man. Enjoy, enjoy your food and your
(42:20):
marriage. All right, hey.
Oh see, I didn't ask any questions but.
It's still good to see you. It's.
Nice. It's nice catching up, Mark and
Seth. Nice seeing.
You, Yeah, good seeing you man, seeing.
Hey, maybe I'll see you. In 100% come to reading.
Kicking out from bad weather? I'll see you there.
(42:41):
Yeah, it's in Sacramento. Anyway, nothing ever happens in
Sacramento. Nothing.
I'm saying that like I know what's happens in Sacramento.
I've never been here except for a few months now so.
Yeah, I was about to say, I feellike there's droughts.
Yeah, I don't know. Droughts, yeah.
It's so green here right now, though it looks like Tennessee
(43:03):
does in the summer. Dude that was the wild part
about well every time I leave Tucson it's just it's crazy how
green places look to me cuz it'sso not green.
Straight up desert, that's what it is.
Yeah, I saw two donkeys on my ride today, saw a Bob or a
(43:23):
bobcat a few weeks ago, saw a coyote the other morning, and
just in the park, like sitting in a Bush looking at me like you
look tasty. They can get pretty big.
We have some pretty big ones here and it's like it's big.
You think a coyote is pretty like you're fine being a like a
bigger person, but no, they're they can get huge.
(43:44):
Yeah, they can get pretty big. They can.
Did you hear about this direwolf?
They brought dire wolves back from extinction.
Yeah, how that? How was that?
Is that a real thing? It is real.
There's a company called Colossus.
They. It seems like a horror movie or
horror book. Like why are we bringing things?
It's straight up Jurassic. Park exactly.
(44:05):
It's a strap Jurassic Park. They they got the genome
sequence through using like a tooth and a few other things and
then use some wolves to finish it up and then augmented and
embryos stuck in the wool. I just Wildlife Conservation
mark AT Rex. We need to conserve.
We need to bring them back. Why?
(44:26):
Why couldn't we just have more wolves?
It is a wolf, but this is a direwolf.
It's a dire situation for a diretime.
All right. Can you do some research on a
dire wolf? When did they go extinct?
And was it because of poaching? Was it because of I think.
It was like 10,000 years ago. Let me look at when did dire go?
This is really like a Jurassic. Park situation it went, it was,
(44:50):
excuse me, 13,000, approximately.
Who? Who knows all this million
years, thousands of years? Nobody really knows.
Read this on. Or is it the onion that does the
fast? Air bro, this was like the guy
who runs the company went on JoeRogan and was talking about the
entire process. Yeah.
And you know, if somebody's already bringing back these
(45:12):
extinct animals, somebody somewhere is working on some
kind of crazy dinosaur or something.
And you know that the black markets already this, the new
war machines are going to be ancient giant sloths.
And yeah, velociraptors, they'reworking on bringing back the
thylacine. You know what that is?
No, tell me. The thylacine, it's like, what
(45:35):
are they? It's, it's also, it's, it's a
type of Tasmanian tiger. And because these were, they
went extinct not as long ago, but they have a pouch in like
the facing backwards, like they're All in all fours, but
they have a pouch in the back that would almost look like a
butt. But they put their babies in
that and they Burrow. And yeah, they didn't go extinct
(45:57):
that long ago. And it was because the it's
because of us, because of poaching.
Let's. See.
They went extinct in 1936, died in captivity.
So we just couldn't get him to make babies, I guess.
Tough, tough times. Just to goes, you guys are still
(46:19):
live. Of course, we're still live.
People are excited about this. So you know Justin?
If he wants to talk shit he needs to stay it in person.
That's right. What's up?
Were we boring you? I was like, dude, what is this
dinosaur talk? I'm ready for like some
(46:39):
triathlon training. All right, well, we can talk
about. Triathlon training.
Now that you're on here, who can?
Got back to my beautiful hotel room.
Oh it. Was sweet.
Yeah, I saw you were back into the corporate life.
Back in the corporate life, but I'm wearing my new yellow watch.
I think that's the race. All I know is Ari kept his
(47:01):
stash. Ari kept his stash, man.
He beat me in the final shoot. Did you see the finish?
Did I see the finish? I didn't see video, no.
Wait, it was back close to the finish.
I mean, we could see the finish. You could see the finish for
like 2K there. Dang, yeah.
It was. It was the 400 meters.
(47:22):
Probably. Man, I didn't realize it was
that close. Yeah, it's.
You're already paying. Heard if you were, if you were
looking at the Iron Man tracker, some of the runtime, a lot of
the runtimes were off because they included your team too.
Yes, some of them were. Some of them were correct.
(47:42):
Like Christian on the Iron Man tracker said his proper time.
Yeah, like all those leaders like Rudy and Seth and they said
like 11430, but it was really like, it was like 112 like.
1/12/30 it was about a minute and 40 seconds and because I was
on pace for like 118 most of theday, and then I blew up into a
million pieces and I'm like, OK,I ran 1/21/21 and then they're
(48:06):
like, you ran 123 and I was like.
Wow, hell. Like, I blew up so hard and it
turns out it was 1/21/20, which is still not good, but I was
like, OK, I could at least wrap my head around it.
Yeah. So I like a little bit of a
mental crisis for like a few hours.
I was like, dude, I've gone so backwards during this injury
(48:27):
period, I'm running like 2 minutes slower than I thought I
would and I felt OK anyway. And then?
And. Then all the fans were like,
man, he really over biked here on 1/23 and I was like, no I
didn't. I didn't.
I got 2 minutes, give me two. Minutes.
They didn't understand the full back story of what you've just
gone through. Yeah, whatever.
(48:48):
I mean, I can handle that. It's fun.
Yeah, man, there's fun standing this weekend. 325 watts.
And that, but that's pretty average, pretty right.
Standard a little bit like very very close to my average from
last. Year because of how fast you
were. I was faster at the exact same
(49:08):
watts to the Watt as last year, and I was more on the front
because last year I was just stuck in wheels, Sam and Lionel
and Jackson, and my attacks werea little bit harder this year,
like I did 2 minutes at 4:42 andlast year I did 2 minutes at
like 420. But other than that, it was just
(49:29):
faster. Yeah, better, more arrow, fast,
aggressive. You know what's interesting,
man? When you're riding felt is fast.
Yeah. You know what's interesting?
When you're riding by yourself, you can just ride faster.
Like, you're not breaking, you're not looking at the light
in front of you. You're not like, I don't know.
I just found once I settled intomy own rhythm, especially those
(49:50):
last 15 miles, I was just like, hammering the corners, really
accelerating through the course, through the town, riding pretty
aggressively. Not dangerously, but yeah, using
the whole Rd., no distractions. And I don't know, I was just
noticing, like, ma'am, when you're in that group, like
there's a lot of like wallygagging, like, yeah, you're
riding fast, but like you're notalways riding super efficiently.
(50:12):
It's like, absolutely not. There's a lot of surges,
especially if you're in the back.
That's why it's like you want tobe like 2-3.
Four is how I always look at it.Because especially with race
Ranger now, like you see blue and all of a sudden you're like,
oh shit. So you're like it's adding these
extra surges. So actually the more towards the
front you are, the less hopefully that you have of that.
(50:33):
Yeah. So yeah, I'm excited about it
cuz I think the aerodynamics have gotten better from the wind
tunnel and I'm just riding smartand being patient.
And obviously I wish one other two other guys would have gone
with me since I knew most of those guys were gonna outrun me
even on a good day. Like it's kind of crazy.
Like if I had ran, I was really like attacking to try to go for
(50:55):
a top 8 because I looked, I looked behind me.
I was like, well, there's fucking nine of us.
Like I'm going to get 9. You know, like all these guys
are going to run under 115. And I just haven't ran much.
So I was like, I might as well try to get a gap and maybe some
guys will blow or whatever. And then, but if I had ran like
116 or 17, I still would have been 8th place, which is kind of
(51:15):
wild. It was really that's right in
elite front group like those guys were running, you know, all
of them had good. Yeah, like the like you said,
the Iron Man times like don't doit justice.
Like all those guys including Appleton ran like 113 low, 112
high. What was Ari split?
One O 950. 50 That's great. And he was so fast solo on the
(51:37):
bike, wasn't he? For the most part, yeah.
You know, I think he's working his way through the field.
But he had higher power than me.Obviously, like that doesn't
mean much. Like, you know, everybody's
power meters different for sure.Everybody's aerodynamics,
they're different. I don't know, I saw some guy
post, I won't name names, he like rode 216 and said he wrote
345 watts. And I was like, dude, I rode
(51:57):
about 11 minutes. Like there's no way he did that.
That's. A lot of power.
Yeah, I was like, are you ridinga road bike, man?
Like. Yeah.
It was a good, good weekend, good to start to the year.
How you feeling? Where are you at now?
I'm in San Francisco, I was catching a little bit of a cold
the last two days but there's a quick turn around.
(52:19):
I drove 5 hours on Sunday and then flew here on Monday and
I've been in the office all day and was just just joined the
stupid questions. Instagram live roulette.
I know we might need to have twocover photos, one with Lisa and
one with you. Yeah, Lisa's going to lose her
spot. She's been absent for three
episodes now and we put her on the face real estate.
(52:41):
I know so. You give her an inch, she's
going to take a mile. We're going to give her no, no,
nothing. Yeah, I've done a whole one hour
bike since the race, which is a little scary.
Day four of like doing nearly nothing but my quads were so
rocked. Honestly, I was like, I haven't
(53:03):
been in that store since I've been like plastid, first race of
the year, first race of the yearand you don't know, I didn't
have run volume in my, you know,in my legs.
So Justin, how impressed are your Co workers?
Or are they like, cool, where's my spreadsheet?
They're impressed, but like obviously they have no sense of
(53:25):
like the level that we're racingat.
Like, you know, I feel like theywere just as impressed like 6
years ago. It's alright, I stay at my face
as extra red right now. It is a little red.
Are you in the side there? I don't know if I get the
lighting. The lighting.
Sure, it's the lighting. I don't know.
I know when people say my face is red, it gets redder.
All right, It's all right. Justin to interrupt.
(53:50):
No, I'm just trying to think about what the chatter's been on
the, on the Co worker front. It's there's like a couple
categories. I have like 2 Co workers that
are like my actual friends that I've worked with for like 5 or 6
years that I talked to, you know, almost on a daily basis
about work stuff. And they actually get it.
They're like, you know, they know I have like sponsors and
I'm racing at a high level and that I'm a pro and that I'm like
really serious about it. And so they're, they're like,
how'd it go? You know, And I'm like, oh,
(54:11):
cool. And they're always interested in
like who'd I beat? I'm like, oh, I beat the Olympic
gold medalist in the army, real world champion.
You don't need to know that, he flatted.
You know, like nobody needs to. Know, but that really.
Perspective yeah, it's kind of cool it's just like oh wow.
And then the other guys are justlike, when's your next race?
I was like, uh, you know, Peru in two weeks?
(54:34):
They're like, what? And then they just kind of walk.
Away favorite question is oh, what are you training?
What race are you training for? It's.
Like all of them like. Yeah, the whole year.
I don't know yet. Here's the pro schedule.
I'm going to see what the start list looks like and how I feel.
You know, the hardest thing has been these work trips have lined
up like after races over and over and over.
(54:57):
And I'm like not really doing mybest work.
And so because I'm so fucking tired, I'm just like exhausted.
I'm like getting sick. I'm like traveling or my body
hurts. I'm like limping around the
office. I just want to take a nap.
I mean, I don't know how you feel after races when you're
like optimizing for recovery, but when I'm like in the office
for 9 hours sitting, it's hard. It's yeah, so.
(55:20):
And last summer I flew straight from Iron Man Lake Placid to a
work trip and was on site for four days and ended up getting
COVID and then give all my and then and I have to fly from
Lima, Peru to Chicago now. Oh no.
Trip and I'm like yes I was so close to I don't think any of my
Co workers are watching this butI was so close to just saying
(55:40):
like I have a conflict I cannot make that Chicago trip and
anyway I'm going but I'm not excited about it so I'm hanging
in there but. It's impressive.
It impresses me. I'm I always ask myself, could I
handle a full time, full time job?
And I'm like, probably not. Mine You're a leader I've.
(56:01):
Been I've been sick and injured and I'm not doing my best work
and I'm not running that well. Like, you know, there's always
trade-offs, so. Yeah, it's tricky.
You also have a, you can supporta family you don't have.
You don't have financial stress. You have a do you have a Sorry,
a Porsche? Yeah.
(56:23):
Yeah, I actually have a question.
So you're wearing, you're wearing the electrical or the
medical gloves. Why?
I was wearing medical. Gloves to break down the bike or
to keep the car clean. When you were putting your.
Bike. Yeah, it was actually both.
(56:45):
It was both because I was like, OK, if I break down the bike, I
said my hands were going to be greasy and then I'm going to be
touching the car so I'm going towork.
Because in the video, you're a little car with the glove.
It wasn't to keep the car spotless, it was to not get
grease all over the car. Though.
So it kind of makes sense. Yeah, It was pretty.
It was pretty fun, I mean. I drove like 5 minutes with the
(57:06):
with the felt in the Porsche andthen I was like, this is a
terrible idea. Like everything's bouncing
around, the bike's like that's awesome paddling against the
wheel and like this is not goingto work.
So. But I'll tell you how.
You didn't like this? Trade I would trade the Porsche
for a 70.3 Oceanside win for sure yeah and and no money I
(57:27):
think I think I would pay 100 grand I win Oceanside 1st 100
grand yeah that's what the. Port Lionel made 100 grand from
that race. That's over shot.
I bet you my. Bonus isn't very.
Bonus so like how much do we think he makes on AI mean it
wasn't it's a big race but not like championship.
Do you think he makes an extra 20 to 30 K from sponsors?
(57:52):
I would say at least, yeah. For sure, for sure, for sure,
But the real questions like the lifetime value of yet another
win for like 1 all like I don't know if it's like like if you
were on one Oceanside, it would be worth like a shit ton of
money because it would probably like double or triple our next
year's base salary. Yep, cuz any of those pro series
(58:14):
races now, especially Oceanside,it's just so much about value.
I think it's so much. So much attention, it's
obviously it gets a world fast field and it's truly in the
season. Everybody.
You have the ability to win a world title.
Like if you win Oceanside and you beat Gustav and Lionel and
Rudy and Ben and Christian, likeyou could win a world title.
(58:37):
So that's that's how I would think about it as a brand is
like I would kind of bucket like, all right, who are the
guys I think could win World Championships at Kona or 70.3
Worlds in the next five years? And that's like a short list of
guys. And I think those guys and girls
command a completely different premium than basically everyone
else. And I think by winning a pro
(58:57):
Series race like Trevor did lastyear or like Lionel has many
times, you put yourself in that category.
Yeah. I mean, that was huge for what
we saw Trevor do obviously at Kona, but in winning Lake
Placid, I mean that was just a huge resume builder, like a
Korean. Like when you can win a race of
that caliber, it's so much more than just like obviously the
(59:19):
podium is huge too, but when youwin races.
Yeah, my winning bonuses are waymore than I don't know about
yours, Mark. They're probably similar, like
way more than the second or third like it's.
But I'd rather have it be that. Three or one more money to win
than to get second or third and all these.
More exposure from the wind. Yeah, yeah, it's interesting.
(59:43):
I hope I win Peru. We'll see.
Start list is going to come out in the next week.
Coach is like just race for a podium.
You haven't podiumed in a year and a half.
I'm like, I know, I know. And obviously I'm going to have
to run a lot better, but it'll be fun.
I mean, I think they'll be in the mix.
I'll win. And what is it going to be?
I have no idea, I think it's thesame there year round like near
the equator. OK.
So it's going to be pretty. Probably like a Cozumel.
(01:00:05):
You've got racer. Yeah, you won Cozumel.
How thick is it? I don't know.
It's in with. 1/2 Iron Man. Really hot.
I don't know if it's gonna be ifI can go back and defend because
it's so close to World 70.3. Yeah, I mean you could, it's
like 6 weeks. OK, so it's possible.
Yeah, yeah. So that's a long ways off.
(01:00:28):
We'll see. I know right?
You might be a niece if you qualify for Placid.
There we go, if things go well there.
I think you've got a great shot,dude.
You're going to be just such a beast on the bike.
I mean, it's hard to. I mean, I'm excited but nervous.
It is hard sitting here injured, but.
Dude, I mean, that's. Been me and it's just continues
to make my swimming bike stronger so I don't want to be
(01:00:50):
anymore. My swimming bike are now
officially good enough. Yeah, we've talked about this a
lot. Like this is the beauty of our
sport. Like obviously hopefully if you
get injured, like hopefully you never get injured.
But if you do get injured, hopefully you're able to do one
of the sports, ideally 2 of the sport, at least 2.
And you can just get you can just, yeah.
It's where you focus your energyand get so much better.
(01:01:10):
Like my biking because of this foot.
I've gotten so much better already, yeah.
I was thinking about you out there.
I was like, I, I wonder if you could have gone with me in
Oceanside, I think. I was sick with that and then
two felt off the front dirty. I don't know if I would have
gone with you. I mean, if I was behind you and
(01:01:30):
you went and I was like let him go kind of in position, I might
have just tried not knowing, like thinking everyone else just
going there. But I don't know.
We'll see. It's the one if I'm using those
what ifs as a motivator for sure.
Yeah, it's interesting think because like I, I really, I
understand not being scared of me on the run, right?
Like, I don't blame anyone for not going with me.
(01:01:53):
But you're telling me every one of those guys wanted to bet on
their run. Like all of those guys were
racing for a podium, right? Every one of them.
Sam Ben Rooster. Surprised no one.
I think it was just one person didn't.
And then they're all like, yeah, yeah, I think they saw the
effort you put in and they were maybe scared to go.
Yeah, but I I really felt like it was somebody's ticket to a
(01:02:15):
guaranteed podium like, you know, because for an out.
Jake, they've already got a penalty, yeah.
And then maybe the other, the other ones just got caught out
of position and they, yeah. It is.
It is hard to go with the front. You know that climb.
Like if you're 6 bike lengths times 12, you're a football
field behind the guy in the front.
(01:02:36):
You're not going to bridge a football field.
And you have to get more power. Yeah, right.
To catch, obviously. And the person's already
attacking. The persons are already
attacking, so you're 25 seconds to pass each person times 7.
You're not getting up there likeby the time you actually to get
up to the person to to go with them.
So yeah, when I think about it that way, like the only two or
(01:02:56):
three people that actually had achance to go with me were the
people right behind me. And I think Rudy and Jake tried
and they just couldn't matter. They still himself, because
Rudy, yeah, I mean you. Did Rudy ended up by himself?
That you know. Right.
So you came in and then Rudy came in?
Yeah, he was the head of that group.
Yep. What was the time gap between
about 40 seconds, seconds and then from Rudy back, How many?
(01:03:20):
About another 40 seconds. So yeah, I would have had to run
112 to win. So fast.
I would have had to outrun aboutlike 3 minutes like.
Faster. Yeah, honestly, I mean if
Christian was there I think I might have been able to get 9th
even with my shitty run. I wonder what would have
(01:03:42):
happened with him. You could have when you talked
about this in your recap, he wasgetting that group up.
Yeah. He was riding hard, hard AF.
The 1st 15 miles I was doing 360on his wheel and I was like out
This is this is not you're like people will not be there very
long. And then he watered damn three,
you know I. Don't.
I don't know if he was just doing a 5 minute effort.
(01:04:04):
It was so quick. The amount of time he was on the
front was honestly like unfortunately short.
So right. Anyway, it was a great race.
It's just it got me excited to be back racing again.
It's fun to have the season underway, yeah.
Yeah, shit's getting real. How are you doing, Seth?
When's your first race? Pretty good.
I've got 100 mile gravel race atApril 27 S Saint Anthony's down
(01:04:27):
near Mount Whitney so it's been fun.
Been enjoying the long rides, getting as much elevation as I
can. Looking forward to.
I'm going to do Coeur d'Alene 70.3.
That's on June though. That's such a fun race man, I'm
looking forward to it. I've heard it's got a good bike
course that should suit my smallstature, so I'm looking forward
to giving it all I got. I'm looking forward to racing.
After coaching myself for a while, I feel really good so.
(01:04:50):
Coeur Dalene's my favorite, one of my favorite races of all
time. Probably one of my favorite
courses, yeah. Very gorgeous.
I got family. I went to I was I got married
the weekend after that. So I was in a little bit of hot
water doing the half I've been the weekend before my wedding.
What if you gosh, like, what if you?
It'll be fine. It'll.
Be fine, we'll go to Glacier National Park and Whitefish and
(01:05:13):
I was like drinking beers the week before the race.
It was I was an amateur 2022 andI had a 8 minute lead off the
bike and I won by 1. Minute it.
Was terrible. It's somebody.
Still won, Really. Fun.
You know the count of how many age group EMJ wins over the
(01:05:37):
years there were total? Total for me a total I don't.
Know saying how many? Yeah, it'd be a crazy number I
had. You took into account the age
group, like the individual age groups too I guess when average.
Groups like 505 per racing, yeah.
It's crazy how much. And now it's what Roka?
(01:05:58):
Roka Standard. Roka Standard Racing, yeah.
Yeah, dude, Roka's making a big push back in.
Yeah. Seems like triathlon.
They've like a bunch of the big,big names.
We. Got Sam, Taylor and Trevor.
Yeah, damn. Yeah, Sam Taylor forever from
(01:06:19):
Americans. And then, yeah, abroad we go.
All of Pat Lemieux's athletes besides.
Yeah, Dent lab Lucy. Lucy's yeah, I guess.
And I know what's his name, the Australian short course guy who
just said no Australian. Yeah, Houser's in Hoka Roka.
(01:06:47):
Yeah, we just got. Well, my phone is about to die.
Magnus yet I don't know. What is?
You're both try. Was trying to say Rolex but yes.
Yeah, everybody's loving the yellow.
I love your colors, by the way. I never got to go, but black and
yellow, there's no one else likethat.
(01:07:08):
I dig it. You need a spot for.
Sure, I got like fun nicknames. I got big birds.
Bumblebee. Bumblebee, that's what I like.
It's definitely Pogacha that's like, yeah, what?
About, you're pushing up the link.
Yeah, you've got the fastest bike split so.
Yeah, got to back it up. Got it.
(01:07:29):
Yeah, that's right, Yellow's a little more yonas black and
yellow black. And yellow.
What's that song that was like amiddle school anthem?
Yeah, Yeah. You know what it is?
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, you should do that.
Do the April 27th big day. We got the the Mount Whitney
gravel race. We got the Saint Anthony's
National Championship. Exactly.
(01:07:51):
It's store course, Olympic, non draft, world championship.
Yeah, it's pretty stacked room, Yeah.
And we got Peru and then a little race called Iron Man
Texas. That that was not going to be
that important or big or or exciting.
Yeah, that's all. I feel like everyone that was at
Oceanside is going to be at thatrace.
Literally everyone except for what?
(01:08:13):
Except for you just said yeah, that.
Was quite a reason for not doingit, but.
Well, in the top ten, you got Lionel doing it.
Oh yeah, you got goose talk. Doing it, Shannon person doing
it. This stuff is not doing it.
That's not no. You got Canoe, you got Apple,
you got. Patrick, is he doing it?
Big Burt whistles. Doing it?
(01:08:34):
No, he's not. He might come to Saint George.
You'll have Patrick Longo, Matt Marquart, Trevor Foley.
It's going to be sack. It's going to be and then, babe.
The next T100 race isn't until June, so how many of those?
I wonder if any of those guys will do it.
What if Sam shows up? Yeah.
(01:08:55):
That'd be sexy. I don't think you will.
I think I'll do Saint George andskip Texas, but that'd be bad if
you did it. This is doing Saint George.
I heard it's cool when people, when everyone was starting this,
like look at their schedules andthey're posting about it.
And I feel like we've never had that before where people
actually post. Yeah, it's definitely a new
(01:09:19):
thing. That's good.
Because of the theory, it's easy.
It's easy to figure out. Yeah, and if you're, if you're
really good, it doesn't change like what races you do.
And if you're, I don't know, like everyone's going into
Oceanside and Saint George like knowing they're going to be
stacked. So you're not like you're not
going to kid yourself and say like, oh, I'm not going to do
(01:09:40):
Oceanside if it's a too strong of a field, you know, like so I
don't know, it is interesting. I I get a little weird about
like races like Peru where I'm like, oh, like I'll share that.
I'm going to raise 70 point through Peru as like a guy who
normally does not win a podium, but may have a shot at it this
this race. And then a guy like you or like
(01:10:00):
Jackson's like, ah, fucking maybe I'll go down to Peru.
Like I can beat Justin, you know, like I can get that win if
it's only Justin. So that's what I worry about a
little bit is like somebody, youknow, you just worry about
somebody better than you like cherry picking a smaller race.
But I think for these bigger races, it's like whatever.
Yeah, you know it's going to be stacked.
I bet there will be someone who cherry picks that race.
I know, but I think it's going to be, I don't think there's
(01:10:22):
many cherry picking races and it's still like.
And I don't, I don't know why they would.
It's really fucking far. It's really expensive and it's a
$15,000 purse for like it's 2 grand if you had.
So like lose money? You're going to lose.
Money. I just care about racing at the
front. I don't.
I'm not trying to. Make money.
It could be really fun though. Like really really fun still.
(01:10:44):
I think I'm going to ride off the front within 5 miles.
Do. It no one.
Drafts off of. You Dick around behind me and
hope I have like 6 minutes off the bike and hang on.
Don't be a fun way to race. You can't do it very often in
the pro field unless you're likeSam or Magnus, you know?
(01:11:07):
Yeah. Thanks for having me on.
Justin, thanks for joining. We actually let because of our
dinosaur talk, we we made it an hour 15.
Yeah, but we probably lost some people during the dinosaur.
I was 16 direwolves and Dinos buddy that.
Was pretty interesting. It is interesting.
I love this stuff but. Are you just?
(01:11:30):
Talking about the woolly mammoths they're trying to bring
back, is that what you were talking about?
Yeah, that's the same company. It's the same company.
It's kind of they're doing it. How about someone to do it?
Did you guys have some tariffs talk?
Are we talking like traffic? So I made a Jones who did that.
It was. Justin, Justin said that.
That's it. Can you say something about
tariffs? Justin, current economic policy,
(01:11:54):
No, I didn't, but I was gonna check the NASDAQ and Upstart
right now. I think it's up a little bit.
It's up 12%, dude. It's up more than.
Little you know, it's so funny, the first one.
Day game and in the stock marketsince 1990 something.
Yeah, because. The Apple's up like 12% and. 12%
(01:12:15):
from yesterday right when it didso much.
Yeah, exactly. So it's like back to normal I
guess. The first book I ever read,
Business Book, was how it was like 12 Fundamentals for
Investment Success rule #1 neverinvest emotionally.
That is all everyone does. It's all 100% whatever Trump
(01:12:35):
says. Let's everybody trade based on
what somebody says. It's absolutely nuts.
Yeah, pretty much starts up 20% today.
I will take it. Dow's up 8%, yeah.
Get in while it's hot, that's what they say.
That's what they say. I literally quadrupled like the
(01:12:57):
contributions this past week. When is low, of course.
Yeah, I should have. I messed up.
Every time my wife gets there, Iwas like whatever, just throw it
in. Just throw it in.
I never look at it. That's fine.
Yeah I found a charger but I need to eat dinner.
Also, my face isn't as red with the.
Light. I'm just saying, yeah, look as
lobster. Good talking to you all.
(01:13:18):
Right, good to see you guys #31 adios.
