We're going to cover a lotacross this podcast, but today
we're zeroing in on how to getthose auditions done when you're
not at home.
Right now.
Today I want to talk to youabout auditioning on the go,
basically just making it workwhen you're out of town and you

just have to make it work, okay.
So a lot of times we'retraveling and the agents will
send you an audition and, yes,it's due tomorrow.
Don't you just love that?
Okay, but you don't want tolike give up on it, pass on it,
it fits you.
So you're like okay, let's makeit work.
I just want to talk about tipsand tricks, and I've had to do

this before.
I've had to do editing on thego and luckily I do have a
laptop and hopefully you guyshave a laptop.
We're going to talk about whatto do if you've just got a phone
, special ways to make thingssound better and just some
general tips for all auditions.
Okay, so I understand ifthere's initial anxiety, right
(01:55):
when you're just like, oh mygosh, this is not ideal.
It needs to be perfect.
You know, and a lot of like myparents of kids that are doing
this, they're just.
You know you want it to beperfect.
You don't want to not be yourbest, right, but you also don't
want to miss out on anopportunity.
Think of it as you're going toreframe.
This is an opportunity to beresourceful and adaptable, all

right.
So it's not about having theperfect setup.
It's about conveying yourtalent at the end of the day.
You may have heard before myclient and friend, Gabrielle
Nevaeh.
She is amazing.
You might remember her fromthat Girl Lay Lay, but now she
is about to be on Broadway inthe Stranger Things " show.

I'm so excited.
I actually was honored to getto help her with part of her
audition for that, where she hadto sing a little bit when she
auditioned for her Gremlins role.
She did the new Gremlins.
That's on HBO Max.
She just used her phone andjust gave a great performance.
She just kind of like wasn'tprepared with the whole setup

but she knew she was great forit and she just went for it and
she ended up booking the job anddoing two seasons of that show.
It's not about having theperfect setup.
It's just about like okay, ourjob as auditioning voice actors
or actors in general is just tobecome this character and set
this scene and make it feel real.

Okay, that's your job.
We want it to sound perfect.
But if we're not there, let'ssay we're out of town.
Let's just say you're in ahotel room.
Okay, think about utilizing thebed.
Okay, obviously it's ideal tostand up and record.
But if you are sitting on a bedand you can use some pillows
around you for sound dampeningor find a corner, you can use
(03:44):
some pillows around you.
Sound likes to bounce offthings.
So if you can sort of catchthat sound in something soft,
it's always going to soundbetter.
Cell phones are amazing Likethe microphone inside of a cell
phone is really good now.
So we're so lucky.
What you want to stay away fromis echoes.
Ok, maybe there's lobby areasor maybe they have even a

conference room somewhere.
It's possible Even in the car.
The car is pretty much sounddampened.
But do not have the car running, please, cause that is like not
a sound that anyone can EQ outvery well.
But if you're just in the carand close up the door, you could
try that too.
(04:28):
If you're doing this on camera,you just need to find a well-lit
area near a window.
Don't have the light behind youand just have it lovingly
touching your face, darling, andjust keeping in mind, if you
are on camera, just keeping thatbackground simple and neutral,
okay.
So hopefully there's not.
It's not just like hi, I'm atthe Holiday Inn, you can see the

whole thing behind me, you know.
So hopefully you can just see awall behind you.
That would be ideal.
There are, of course, little LEDlights, little ring lights,
little things that you can bringwith you.
So you just kind of have your,your to-go option, okay.
And if you really want to havea good mic, I do really love the

Rode USB, the NT1.
It's a USB and I'll linkeverything, all of my
recommended gear, in the shownotes of this episode.
There are some really good micsto go, but again, honestly,
your cell phone is really good,I promise.
So then just test yourconnection, just make sure
you're you're in the zone.

Don't let your new locationtake you out of it.
You know, it's all about just.
It's really all about yourperformance, ok.
So I kind of feel like today'sepisode is me just like holding
your hand being like it's OK.
Episode is me just like holdingyour hand being like it's okay,
we're not in the ideal setup,but you can do this.

Okay, you definitely want to bestill doing multiple takes.
Don't try to rush through thisbecause you're not in your setup
, Okay.
So that's another thing.
Just stay with your samepractices that you would do in a
studio.
Now let's talk about how we'regoing to edit this together.
Now I really love just thevoice memo app on an iPhone or
like any voice recording appsyou have.
You also can use Twisted Wave.
They have an online version.

Twisted Wave is a really greatonline recording software where
you can also edit.
I have a new favorite app forthe iPhone.
It's called Hokusai 2,h-o-k-u-s-a-i 2.
It's an audio editor.
You can record straight into itif you want, or you can upload
(06:35):
your takes and everything thatyou did in voice memo.
But the way it allows you toedit it is so wonderful.
You just highlight what youwant to delete and it deletes
everything.
The same way, audacity works,which I'll get into.
Hopefully, if you have a laptop, you can just keep recording.
To not think about your editingalong the way is ideal.
(06:55):
What I mean by that is ifyou're like okay, and then and
we're doing this and I'm doingmy line and I love it, okay, let
me stop recording.
Okay, let me start recordingagain.
I'm ready for the next line.
Okay, here's line number three.
You know, just, I would sayjust do not do that.
Make sure your settings aregood, press record and do not
(07:16):
press that button again untilyou're done.
Go back and edit later.
So I recommend that, no matterwhat setup you have, okay.
So, depending on the recordingsyou get, there's always ways to
kind of make it sound better.
I do that for a lot of myclients, where they just send me
their all their takes.
I pick the best ones and editthem and shine up the audio

myself.
But you guys will start tolearn how to do that.
There are different editingtools such as compressors and
noise reduction and things likethat.
Compressors and noise reductionand things like that If you are
on a DAW digital audioworkstation, such as Pro Tools,
logic and kind of moving, Ibelieve you can work this on
(07:59):
Audacity as well.
But there's a great plugin Irecommend called NS1.
It's a wonderful noisereduction.
But again, you guys, if you'renot at home and you're in a
hotel room like, please justgive yourself some grace.
We're doing the best we can.
It's about your performance.
Okay, so I want you to dosomething for me.
(08:21):
Make the hang loose sign.
That is, your thumb out, yourthree fingers rolled down like a
fist and then your pinky outthat from.
If you put your mouth to yourthumb and the tip of your pinky
to the microphone on your phoneor whatever microphone you're

using, I want you to be that faraway from the microphone always
OK, especially kids love totalk so close to the microphone.
Please don't do that, and thenyou're going to have a lot of
when you make p's and b's andthings like that.
So just stay a good distanceaway and you will be good, all
(09:03):
right.
Of course, up next, we need tomake sure you're hydrated, well
rested.
You don't want wanna have likein your mouth.
Some green apples are always agreat way to kind of get rid of
all the gunk in your mouthmaking noise and just remind
yourself of your talent and yourexperience.
Visualize this successfulaudition.
Don't let this technicallimitations discourage you.

Actually, I want you to look atyourself and be like look at us
.
Okay, we're traveling and we'restill turning in our auditions.
Okay, Now I don't want you toget used to just always doing it
on a phone and never investingin good equipment.
I want you to have a greatsetup at home.
You have to have that.
You'll eventually need it.
So I want it in your brain that, yes, we need that when the

time comes, but you can totallydo this with your phone.
Okay, I love it.
Okay, so this is just a littlequick tip for you to just stay
motivated, but also to thinkahead.
Okay, so there might be a daywhen you're traveling but you do
get an audition.
That's great.
So I would recommend havingsome sort of tripod for your
(10:12):
phone, even if it's just alittle one that can go on a
desktop.
Even that will be good just tobe able to stabilize your phone
if you're going to be doingvideos, and, of course, some
sort of external microphone, ifyou can, would be great to have
in your travel kit.
All right, eventually you aregoing to need an audio editing
(10:34):
software, and I highly recommendGarageBand.
If you're on a Mac, youprobably already have GarageBand
installed, and that's a greatone for recording your vocals
but also layering sound, solayering along with music, okay.
The same instance for a PC orMac is Audacity, and let me
(10:56):
explain why I love Audacity.

But let me explain why I loveAudacity and why it's just so
great for editing.
Let's say you're doing voiceover lines, okay, and you're
just kind of like going on andjust keep it.
You keep trying different lines, like, oh, don't tell me you

want to meet them too.
Don't tell me you want to meetthem too.
Oh, don't tell me you want tomeet them too.
Okay.
Let's say you did all three ofthose and you're like eh, I like
the third one and not the firstone.
Well, you can select, just likeselecting a section of video.
You can drag your mouse overthe part of the audio that you
want to delete.
You hit delete and boom, it'sgone.

But what's so cool about thistype of editing is that, instead
of leaving like a silent gapwhere you deleted, audacity
automatically slides the audiothat was after the bad part
right up against the audio thatwas before it.
So it's like saying, okay, thatpart's gone and let's keep the
flow going, and that's reallygoing to help you when you're
editing, to put together youraudition in the way that it's

supposed to sound like.
Here's like a really roughversion of me reading a script.

Ok, you guys are doing anamazing job and sometimes we
just have to do our best andthat's just what we can do.
We also sometimes get it startsto feel like you work for the
agent, where you're likeapologizing to them and you're

like getting stressed out.
Yes, they can fire, you, choosenot to work with you, but they
work for you, okay, and yourkids are kids, okay.
So sometimes an audition mightbe late, sometimes we might have
to pass.
I don't want you to do that allthe time, but sometimes you're
going to have to, okay, so justgive yourself some grace.
