{ILS} Restaurant Kitchens
This picture is from an incredible show on Hulu, called The Bear - Season 4
Intense ride following the life of a restaurant kitchen
owned by a family, that is deeply dysfunctional
Without warning it throttles between
heartwarming/heart breaking,
inspiring/discouraging,
intense/calm
This picture has two things are ever present in the kitchen
The clock - measuring and marking, starting and ending
The sign - demanding all who lay eyes on it to keep moving
What do we know about the gospel story?
Without warning it throttles between
heartwarming/breaking, inspiring/discouraging, intense/calm
There is no time, so the disciples must keep moving
{SCR} Luke 9:51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. {54} When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
{MPT} Jesus set out
He traveled great distances, to people previously separated for every reason
He heard the despair in the voices of people, who pleaded to get his attention
Cities or villages, temple or synagogues, men or women,
{Famous Lyrics} - Non Stop from Hamilton, prolific writing, speaking, leading
{MPT} The disciples sometimes lashed out
(1) This is a stained glass depiction of Peter pulling his sword to defend Jesus
{Take note} - The man’s horror on the left - threat, betrayal, escalation
{Human mindset} - Jesus must be defended, and I will strike first
(2) This picture Mary of Bethany poured expensive perfume at Jesus’ feet
{Take note} - her humility - complete generosity & dedication
{Human mind} Resources must be hoarded and I will correct her
(3) This picture is a village representing every community the disciples saw
{Take note} - innocent children playing, curiosity/concern of onlookers
{Human mind} These people must be taught a lesson and I will
I will decimate an entire village - you didn’t reject me, i reject you
(4) What causes the divide between Jesus’ intentions and human action?
Ancient stories of the Israelites - us vs them
Fatigue and fear - when we are exhausted we shut everything down
Fundamental misunderstanding of Jesus’ commitment - i will limit you
Disciples forgot important instruction - shake the dust off your feet
{SCR} Luke 9:57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” {60} Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
{MPT} {P}otential followers often opted out
The path is undefined
The sacrifices are excessive
The message is unclear
