Speaker 1 (00:10):
Welcome back to
another Super Awesome Mix.
My name is Matt Sidholm, alongside my co-host and
co-founder of Super Awesome Mix,sam Abusalbi.
Sam, how are we doing this week?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Doing really well.
Happy August.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I mean this, is it
Like?
This is kind of the last fullmonth of summer, so you must be
overjoyed.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I am.
I checked the weather thismorning and part of the weather
app, of course, is telling youwhen the sun sets, you know.
And the sun rises and I've beennoticing that it's now
shrinking.
So here it's now, before eighto'clock.
It's when the sun sets and I Iliterally turned to my wife and
I was like, yeah, take that sun, your days are numbered.
(00:50):
Get out of here with that heat.
I can't wait, it's so great.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Yes yes, the star
that essentially keeps the
planet alive, sam sam reallysticks it, sticks to it, right?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
yeah, sticks it to it
.
Yeah, exactly, yes, yeah, okay, yeah, all right, no, it's good,
though it's good it's good.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
It's good, yeah, I
mean it is like a hundred and
something degrees right now, like we've had a pretty mild
summer yeah overall in texas.
But yeah, like right now it'sreally ramping up.
So it's just like you just gooutside and it's like, wow, like
my son had a soccer tournamentand it was just broiling out
there it was rough, I know, andI always feel bad for all the um
, like high schools coming backand starting football too.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
It's just like no,
this is, this is not great
weather to do anything outsideother than roast yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You know, that's
about it yeah, well, that's why
we produce more, uh, elite highschool athletes, though coming
out of the state of texas.
Okay, because of that toughness, all right, at super awesome
mix.
We don't have a high schoolfootball show, all right, we
don't have a sports show, butyou know what I mean.
I could still sit here andadvocate for, uh, the texas high
(02:02):
school athletics, right andeveryone out there knows what
I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, no, I'm not
going to fight you on that one.
Ut's been playing great lately,so hey, preseason number one
okay.
Preseason number one yeah, thisis their year.
This is their year, this is it.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
This is it.
Well, hey, it's the end ofsummer and it is our last summer
new music mix.
So here we are once again, andI gotta say once again I mean we
say this every month, but likehad a hard time picking songs.
There's a lot of great newmusic out there and I think we
did a great job of putting thistogether.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, there's some
some really nice songs in here a
good range of picks and Ienjoyed this mix a lot.
This one was a lot of fun tolisten to, so with that, let's
kick it off.
It's your first pick and it isin all caps Big Money by John
Batiste.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, I thought this
one was a perfect starting off
track, the opening track.
Here I mean just the energy ofit right from the beginning.
John Batiste kind of falls inthat category of like jazz, soul
, but he does some like R&B andkind of rap.
I mean this kind of encompassesall of it.
So I think it was kind ofawesome just because it's all
(03:14):
these different genres sort ofmashed together and lyrically
it's really good.
You know you can buy a song butit doesn't mean you could sing,
you could win it all but loseeverything Talking about
everyone's after that big money,but it's I don't know.
I just loved how cool this onesounded and everything on this.
I mean this might've been myfavorite pick of mine for this
(03:37):
month.
It was just so fun to listen to, but also great energy.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, I got the
chance to see him live at Radio
City Music Hall and he wasincredible.
Have you watched him live too?
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I haven't, no.
I can only imagine, though, howcool, Because I mean, I think
he's just so talented I'dimagine it's a really great show
.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, and he falls
into that category.
As you go to concerts likeanyone, you realize that like
some people are really goodmusicians but kind of bad
entertainers, um, and like a feware are both really amazing
entertainers and amazing, uh,singers.
And he's one of those people,so like he knows how to bring
the crowd in, how to get themexcited.
(04:21):
Like it is a show where you'renot like sitting there looking
at your watch being like okay, are they?
Oh, no, they're startinganother one, oh, man.
You know, like you're, it justgoes by so fast and yeah, this
song is a perfect example ofthat.
I mean, it's just like this forlike two and a half hours.
It's awesome.
He's like New Orleans, likewrapped into a singer right,
like just if, like their soundyou know he does that so well um
(04:44):
, he just like encompasses a lotof of their culture and their
soul and everything andeverything he does.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
So, um, this is an
awesome, awesome track and I
really enjoyed listening to ityeah, and you're right, it all
kind of starts with likemusicianship, right, yeah, and
coming out of a place like neworleans, I think you you kind of
have to be, you know, that goodof a musician to sort of emerge
from that music scene.
And, yeah, no, really excitedfor his new album this month.
All right, your first pick.
(05:11):
We've got Tree.
This is by Chance, the Rapper, lil Wayne and Smino.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah.
So again, anytime I'm going tosee Chance the Rapper, I'm going
to listen to his music.
I think he's just so, so greatand kind of underrated.
Um and Lil Wayne I've beenobsessed with his recent album.
I've been listening to thatnon-stop.
So to see both of them on atrack, I was like obviously I'm
gonna pick this one.
Um, I think you know their.
Their lyrics are amazing.
(05:37):
I love the, the line whereChance is singing.
I think my mama must haveworked at that saltine at the
factory, why she came homecrying, said I'm tired of these
crackers, which crackers is likeobviously a derogatory term for
white people, but I just thinkthat like the saltine factory
and tired of these crackers islike so clever, right, like I
think it's stuff like that thatis really fun to listen to.
(05:58):
Um and little wayne is alsoreally good on this track.
So, as I mentioned, I've beenobsessed with him recently and
been going on like a little LilWayne journey Lil.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Lil Wayne, lil Lil
Wayne.
I love that Saltine line aswell and I wondered why more
rappers haven't integrated likenames of crackers into their
raps.
Probably enough differentcrackers out there, you know,
between a Ritz, an Oyster, aClub Cracker, I mean I don't
(06:29):
know.
There's something there.
So I challenge any rappers outthere to maybe put something
together.
But no, this one's great and Ithink I don't know.
Correct me if I'm wrong, butthis is all about marijuana.
When you listen to the lyricshere and the title Tree, but
yeah, it kind of got me thinkingand they kind of allude to this
(06:50):
in the lyrics.
But how upset must people bewho went to jail for some amount
of time in their life formarijuana possession?
And then you're walking arounda place like New York and it's
like yeah, no, no, totally legal.
You smell it everywhere, youcan get it anywhere.
I mean that's gotta be justbeyond frustrating so
frustrating.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, I can imagine.
Um, it's funny whenever theyofficially like removed the
before they made it legal, theyremoved, like the prosecution of
it in new york.
And there was like that weekendwhere I mean like literally it
was everywhere matt.
I mean like everyone in thecity breathed a sigh of relief
and filled with that breath wasthe scent of marijuana.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
It has since calmed
down, thank goodness, but it was
insane that's the first thingmy wife and I noticed when we
travel out of state because it'snot legal.
Here in texas there's ways toget it, but it's not like legal
legal.
And we were just in Washingtonand California and in both of
those states it's just like.
(07:51):
Everywhere you go it's likenope, there's weed, yep,
everywhere.
I'm just like God, this is awhole new world.
It's really crazy.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
All right.
So on that note, let us move onto a different world, an
accounting world, if you will.
This is well okay.
So it's the acronym EBITDAEBITDA if you are a business
school kid out there, this is byClipse, pharrell Williams,
pusha T and Malice.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yeah, of course,
clipse is the duo, pusha T and
Malice are part of them.
And so, yeah, malice and PushaT are brothers discovered by
Pharrell Williams, and this isonly Clipse's fourth studio
album and their first since 2009.
It's not like they're theGallagher brothers for Oasis.
I think they do actually getalong.
(08:41):
I think it's just been otherreasons why they've kind of
broken up, done solo stuff.
They've had several disputeswith different labels, which is
kind of limited like releasesfrom time to time.
But yeah, this new one, let Godsort them out.
I mean, every time they comeout with an album, there's just
this huge critical reception, and this one's no different.
(09:01):
The whole album is reallystrong.
It was hard to pick just onesong, but, um, you know, in
light of the fact that you and Imet in business school, I felt
like picking a song like eva, that would be, uh, would be kind
of perfect.
But yeah, I mean, just golisten to the whole thing,
because I think you're reallygoing to enjoy it and, and who
knows when, we're going to getanother album from these guys.
So that's the other part.
So you, when things like thisdo happen to me.
(09:24):
I did make reference to Oasis.
They're back touring now, sogoodness knows.
I mean, make sure you buy somesort of insurance on your
tickets because they may notlast before they get to your
city.
But not quite the samesituation here, but still few
and far between with releases, and this was just a great song.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yeah, no, I agree, I
love this one and it samples a
song in the background I thinkit might be Summer Breeze or
something that I'm obsessed withand it always reminds me of the
game Grand Theft Auto, miamiVice, because I think they use
that a lot, and so I immediatelywas just drawn into that
because it's a really subtlesample in the back that it's not
(10:02):
like as pronounced, but lovethe opening lines to this one.
I was just immediately hookedinto the song.
I didn't learn a lot aboutaccounting, though, from the
song.
I was hoping for a littlerefresher, but you're not going
to get that here.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Surprisingly, very
little accounting references in
this one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think theydo talk about going 10X on their
EBITDA, which is a positiveright, that is a good thing you
want to see that as an investor,as a shareholder.
Okay if you're observing acompany there, but yeah, not a
lot of good accounting lessonsabout how to boost your P&L.
(10:36):
All right, your next pick.
Speaking of samples, this oneis jump and is by blackpink yeah
, blackpink, of course.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Um, I've been
obsessed with them basically
ever since I discovered them andI'm pretty sure I was the first
person to listen to them.
You know, I don't think thatthey were that in the world.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
In the world, they
were pretty low-key, very, and
yeah, kind of set them, yeah, and look, those are the
opportunities that come to youwhen you get featured on Super
Awesome Mix.
It's true, yeah, hit us up onsocial media, exactly.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
So I feel pretty
unique having listened to this
and then putting it on this newmusic mix.
If you're not listening toBlackpink, you should be.
They're amazing.
I've been just loving like Imean, they are masters of pop as
well.
Right, we talk about thiscategory of people who just can
produce incredible pop music andwhat talent that takes, like in
(11:28):
its own form.
But, um, this is just anotherexample of that.
It's got such a great beat.
They move effortlessly betweenlike a high energy dance and
then there's just like this bassbeat.
Their vocals are great for popand then, like in the ending, it
just sounds like you're likelistening to a trance track, you
know like just all over theplace, but it works really
really well all together.
So if you're just looking forlike a high energy, like dance
(11:51):
track, they're incredible forthat.
And and it also falls in thatcategory of like songs that I
literally do not care whatthey're singing, what languages
are singing in, you know what, like what the lyrics are.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
I didn't even bother
like I'm in yeah, like that's.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
That's not the point,
in my opinion, of tracks like
this I agree.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Yeah, I love the
energy.
It kind of got me thinkingbecause they're korean and, like
you said, great at pop musicand yet we haven't had.
Have we had a massive likek-pop girl group or or just a
massive girl group outside of,like the spice girls?
Speaker 2 (12:26):
right, yeah, it's
been, they were kind of a
phenomenon.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
But we get so many
like boy bands, like we had a
whole boy band era.
Right, we had one directioncoming from the uk.
We had bts a couple years ago.
But like these women, aretalented and yet we can't get
like a super uber popular girlgroup to catch on.
I thought that was really oddyeah, no, that's a good point.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
I can't think of
anyone if you.
If, if there's somethingobvious that we're missing, you
know, hit us up at super awesomemix on on instagram, let us
know.
I'm I'm sure that we aremissing something, but I agree
yeah, just just really bizarre.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
But anyway, yeah, I'm
kind of with you like they're
good at pop music.
They've obviously gained sometraction here in the us.
But I mean, geez, when we found, when the, when the united
states found bts, you would havethought I mean, yeah, I mean it
was absurd, like the phenomenonthat was here.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
So we're not getting
that no, no, yeah, all right,
let's uh do a total vibe shifthere.
Um, this is track number five.
It is all good with me by eliyoung band yeah, and there were
a couple other country songs.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
I decided to not go
with sam just because I was like
this is just he's just gonnahate it, so I'm just not even
gonna bring it to the mix.
Uh, so with this one, because Iwas like Eli Young Band,
they're a little bit of likethat country rock sound, you
know, not straight ahead country, they haven't come out with a
new album in a few years and youknow, relative to their peers,
(13:56):
because they're fairly popular, but they just haven't come out
with like album after albumafter album.
But you know, know, if you'refamiliar with them, this sounds
just like eli young band, uh,which which is great, like
they're, they're really a goodband, just really just straight,
straightforward, like I said, kind of country rock music.
Um, I picked this one fromtheir new album because I just
(14:17):
love the idea that he's totallygood with everything, as long as
he's with this person, um, butI I kind of chuckled because I'm
like the older I get and and Istill love my wife we've been
married for 13 years but I'malso like I don't want to do
that.
There's more moments where I'mlike, ah, geez, yeah, you don't
(14:38):
want me to sit this one out, wait where?
Where I see on the lawn.
All right, can we upgrade?
Like let's get a seat, let'sjust let's just sit down, just
uh, I mean I'll stand for someof the songs we know, but
otherwise, like, I want a seat,you know.
Yeah, so I just love the ideathat he's all good with
everything and and we all havethat phase, but certainly the
(15:00):
longer you're with someone, themore you get.
We all just get a littleparticular.
That's all I'm saying no, it'strue.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
There's definitely
like an arc where, in the
beginning, like yeah, you'redown for everything, you're like
the coolest person.
You're like, yeah, and then atsome point you feel comfortable
enough, you're like, yeah, itturns out I really don't like.
Really don't like coming withyou to all of these concerts and
sitting in the back like I'msorry, I'm just not gonna do
that.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yeah, and you know
what?
Your friend janine, not thatfunny, no, and I will no longer
laugh at her jokes oh, that'sawesome.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Um, this is a very
country track.
It gets a.
It gets a two out of ten on myon my olympic scoring.
Um, the reason it gets a two isbecause I do like the subject
matter.
I think it's cute, you know.
It's a nice little way of justkind of being like, yeah, you
know you're really into thisperson and so, as he sings,
you're the life of my party, which I really like that line as
well, and also I like theopening line.
(15:57):
Having no plan sounds like theperfect plan to me, because I
also think that the further youget along in a marriage or a
relationship of any kind, themore you're just kind of like do
you just want to do nothing?
And you're like yes, thatsounds.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
It sounds so good,
like it's the best.
Yeah, yeah.
So that's another thing let'sjust hang out all right.
Well, your next pick, and thiswas guaranteed to be loved by
both of us.
They are our old friends AJR,and this new track is called
Betty.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah, so it's funny.
We were just talking aboutrelationships, because this is
about a fear of that commitment.
And what's funny is that he'ssinging this about a fictional
person named Betty.
But come on, if you're datinghim, he's just thinking about
you, right, like it would beimpossible to date like a
musician and have them release asong and they're like no, no, I
(16:48):
told you, I promise you it'stotally fictional.
And you're like is it though?
Like, is it fictional?
Speaker 1 (16:54):
oh yeah, remember the
story behind dirty little
secret by all american rejects, how they were like yeah, no, no,
it's just kind of a song wemade up about, like cheating on
someone.
And then it's like you trygetting away with that Right,
like you're thinking about thisdirty little secret and it's
like, no, it never happened, just a song.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Yeah, it's just a
song.
There's a keen peel skit aboutthis Cause, of course there is.
There's one about everything,but I think it's like a rap song
where he is describing ahomicide that he's being like.
So it's like there's um.
One of them is playing the, theyou know the person accused and
the other one's playing thedetective, and every time they
play further into the clip ofthe song he gets more and more
(17:33):
specific about how he killedthis person.
Classic keen feels get, it's sofunny, but that's what I feel
like is happening with this one?
um, but yeah, it's a.
It's a great ajr song, right, like we talk a lot about we say
this almost every everyrecording about bands that just
(17:55):
have a sound that you just lovetheir sound, and ajr is one of
them.
Like I, he's, he's so, they'reso good and like talking about
anything and doing it with akind of poppy light feel, even
if they're talking about thingslike fear of commitment and like
not wanting to, not wanting tomarry someone, but doing it in
such a funny way, right, likewhenever he mentions like
getting dinner with her mom orsomething, and he's like please
(18:17):
tell her to stop pointing atyour finger, you know, like
asking where the ring's at.
So it's great.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
No, I agree.
No, this was, this was a funone right off the bat and, uh,
you know, also, like they, theyget that hint of paranoia that
comes out of it too, because notonly is it, you know, singing
about this relationship and anykind of fears they might have,
there's also fear of like, well, maybe I lose you altogether,
right, and so, yeah, the rangeof emotions here, and I think
(18:46):
it's well done by a band that isobviously having fun, and, like
you said, maybe this isn'tabout someone specific, but it
still resonates, so, yeah, Ithink that's what makes their
music kind of stand out fromjust sort of kind of I don't
know something that's just maybemore, you know, uh, more of a
parody.
Right, it's really not thatlike, I think they do feel these
(19:08):
things.
It's just they, they just havea little more fun with it yeah,
definitely all right.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
This next one was a
was a very strange pick.
This.
I was not expecting this one tobe on a new music mix, um, but
but I enjoyed it the more Ilistened to it.
This is stone Stonehenge, originally by Spinal Tap, but
this is Spinal Tap and EltonJohn on the track.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Yeah, I mean, look,
happy Gilmore 2 is on Netflix
right now.
They're not giving us anysponsorship money, so I'm not
going to tell you to go see it,but it's just a long line and a
sequel, a long-coming sequel.
Right, that one's 30 years back.
Spinal Tap was from 1984.
So either even farther back andSpinal Tap 2, the end continues
(19:51):
is coming out in September.
The original is so brilliant andI think if you are a fan of
rock music and you watch that,it's just amazing how they
capture just the self-importance, I like, of some of those
artists.
Yeah and uh, and that's whatcomes through this song where
(20:12):
there's this strange the lyricsare all about this odd made-up
mythology and just everythingassociated with stonehenge and,
uh, I don't't know, they justcrack me up, I mean, just with
all their music.
And here it's like all right, well, let's update this song and
let's get Elton John on thetrack as well.
So I imagine, much like HappyGilmore 2, if you saw it, this
(20:35):
one is going to have just a slewof cameos of people praising
Spinal Tap as the greatest rockband of all time.
So I'll definitely be going tosee it, but I was like you know,
and again, they're not payingus any money they should.
We'd gladly have them on theshow, um, but yeah, I, I just
love everything about it andthis one, you know, felt like it
(20:57):
was.
It was a good one to throw in anew music mix yeah, I agree.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
No, I loved it.
Uh, it was so fun.
I I had not seen the originalspinalinal Tap, but of course
we've talked about them beforeon our mix of fictional bands,
so this one was a lot of fun,but I love the little pan flute
that is featured in the song.
How often are songs featuringpan flutes?
We should maybe put togetherthat mix.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
A pan flute mix.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
A pan flute mix, okay
, there might be this song and
maybe one other maybe, maybe oneother, yeah, yeah and it's
probably by flight of theconcords, because I can't think
of another one that that has apan flute in it.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Um, and they also.
Well, yeah, we need to find anunironic pan flute right,
exactly no you know what itreally just added to the song I
like, like that.
It was there Exactly.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
But no, this is a
great song and definitely a
collab that I had no idea that Iwanted, you know, between Smile
Tap and Elton John, but turnsout I really wanted it.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
All right.
Well, let's move very much intothe present, and I would say
even future, with this nextartist.
This one is the Subway and it'sby Chapel Roan.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Yeah.
So shout out to a longtimelistener, dad03girls on
Instagram for the suggestion.
He's always sending new musicour way and everything, and this
one caught his attention, ofcourse, because he's from
Saskatchewan and she has thisline in the song where she sings
well, f the city.
I'm moving to Saskatchewan, sohappy to throw this on the mix.
(22:30):
It's a great song, of course.
I mean, she's so talented.
This is another great songabout that stage of the breakup
too.
I think she sings about thatreally well where you can't wait
for that moment where, as shesings, this is just another
person on the subway, you know, just another girl on the subway.
Um, and it, you know, it getsyou thinking about like that
again, that arc in thatrelationship where someone can
(22:51):
go from being so important inyour life to then eventually
kind of becoming a stranger.
You know like, if enough timegoes by, like you, you feel like
you don't even know themanymore, you don't think about
them anymore and but in themoment after a breakup, like
that seems like an impossiblethought.
Um, you know, like they're soingrained in your life that it's
impossible to imagine them asjust being a stranger.
(23:12):
But eventually that happens.
So I just uh, I love the songum and I appreciate the, the
suggestion from um, from ourlistener dave, and then also I
really like the cleverness ofhow she closes this out between
switching between she's got awayto she got away and she does
that like so effortlessly, and Ithink such a minor change in
(23:32):
the lyric and they mean twocompletely different things and
it's really clever as well.
Um, again, just talking aboutthat, those feelings of like wow
, you know, she, she's got away, like she really, you know, made
me feel things, but then alsoshe got away and so now the
relationship's over, so reallyreally good song.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Start to finish yeah,
I agree, just really well done.
I mean, she's, she's kind ofseen.
They almost kind of put her outthere as like maybe an heir
apparent to, like lady gaga, where there's there's part
spectacle but also part singingtalent and and sometimes gets a
little overshadowed by thespectacle.
I think people were kind ofsurprised as lady gaga went
(24:09):
along, that it was like, oh wait, she can really sing right and
I think this one kind of is iskind of a standout for her, like
vocally.
I thought this was so good andalmost reminded me of Celine
Dion with like kind of the voicequality and the voice work.
In this one I could see thisbeing a track she sings.
So you know, I want to justpoint that out, just because I
(24:29):
do think sometimes it's kind ofgets overshadowed by just either
the videos that could put outthere or or, you know, whatever
she does in her stage show, right, which is awesome.
I mean, that's obviously.
You know, we talked earlierabout people being, you know, a
good singer but maybe not agreat entertainer.
I think she's certainly both.
The other thought I had hereand I think I've advocated for
(24:50):
this before.
But you know, straight guysshould get more into lesbian
rock, right, because it's likewe're all singing about they're
just singing about women, right.
So like what guy?
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Like you can, guys,
you can listen to this song.
This is a very specific thingfor you to not only advocate for
, but to bring up multiple timesnow.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
I just think there's
guys out there probably like I
can't listen to this, but I'mlike, I'm telling you guys like
no, get into it.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Yeah, you have the
same goal.
Yeah, same goal.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Yeah, same goal.
We've all had that feeling.
She got away Chapel.
I hear you, you know we canhang out I love that.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
I love that there's a
.
You remind me, there's anepisode in Curb, your Enthusiasm
, umid and rosie o'donnell.
And larry is a a champion oflesbians.
Yes, he is.
Yes, he is, which is great.
All right, all right well, uh,track number nine.
Next track, it is the hope byamy mcdonald all right.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Amy mcdonald is a
scottish singer songwriter.
This is from her six studioalbum titled.
Is this what what You've BeenWaiting For?
And I realize I'm not qualifiedto answer that question because
I was not familiar with herwork prior to this.
Okay, but I'm here to saythat's my bad right, because I
really enjoyed this.
I really enjoyed her album.
I picked out this song justbecause I consider myself a
(26:18):
pretty optimistic person andjust love it.
It's called the Hope One lyricI'll call out Watch me, now I'm
going to hit that shot, work itout with everything I've got.
We've got something I can'texplain.
We're still winners, babyWinning in a loser's game.
Loved her voice, just lovedkind of the kind of pop rock
(26:38):
feel of this one.
You know they kind of give herthat singer songwriter label
which makes you think maybe it'skind of a slower kind of feel
to it.
But I think there's a lot ofgreat energy on this track and,
yeah, I mean I think I'm gonnabe, you know, digging down a
little more to what she's doing, because um really enjoyed this
one yeah, I was not familiarwith um, with amy, and really
(26:58):
just first few seconds of thesong I was hooked, like I just
knew I wanted to listen to theentire song, listen to every
lyric.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
You know.
Just something about her voiceis really interesting.
I really liked it and just likewhat she was singing about.
So, yeah, this is a really coolfind.
Well done.
I like this track a lot allright, your next pick.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
This is another band
I've not heard of.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Uh, this is bully by
durie yes, they're very similar
words there, um, but so durie uhactually was founded by two
siblings uh, their names austinand taryn.
They started during 2020 likelockdown, um, you know, a lot of
people started new things.
We started this podcast, basically that's right during
covid so here we are doing, doing our thing too, um, but I
(27:43):
just love I.
I could honestly read everysingle lyric to the song, which
I won't, but I just think that, like, listen to the the lyrics,
read them if you need to, butthey're so clever and so funny.
Um, just basically talkingabout, like internet bullying,
you know, and like how we're all, just as they sing over and
over everybody's fighting on theinternet.
Again, no one's even tryinganymore, you know, it's just
(28:03):
like this modern, modern dayanthem to what's happening.
Um and uh also, you know, man,you seem really miserable, but
I'm glad you got that off yourchest.
The internet is free.
I'm no professional, but I thinkyou could use a therapist,
which is, you know, again, likeyou get some of these comments
from people and you're just like, wow, like yeah, you've got
(28:23):
some, possibly some rage issuesand maybe you should talk to
someone.
So I think, like the lyrics areso funny and then just, you
know it's wrapped up in thiskind of all american rejects or
some 41 feel.
You know it's got that vibe toit.
So really, really fun song andhappy to have just stumbled upon
this one.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Well, and I love that
the name of this album is this
Movie Sucks right, which is alsogreat, but I completely agree.
This one from the Jump kind ofcaptured my attention just by
the sound of it, and then theygot into the lyrics and I was
just loving it because, yeah,it's a hundred percent true.
(29:03):
Like the way, I'll neverunderstand how so many people
are compelled to just jumponline and tell strangers how
much they suck.
It's just, it's amazing, okay.
Now that being said, pleasesubscribe to our YouTube channel
and please be nice in thecomments.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Okay, we comments.
Yeah, we love nice comment.
Yeah, we'll, we'll respondright back to you with another
nice comment, and then we'llboth feel better.
You know like, isn't that justso lovely?
Speaker 1 (29:33):
well, it is one of
those things, though, because,
even like, with what we do herewith this podcast, right if we
were to come on and just makelike obviously more extreme
statements about artists yeahlike we'd probably have more
downloads from people eitherhating us or loving us because
of that, right, yeah, and, andwe just don't do that.
That's not really who we are,but it is funny how that's what
(29:56):
kind of captures, uh, people'sattention no, it's true we
should do.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
I just had the
thought maybe a a Stranger
Things promotion with theirfinal season.
We do a Bizarro World superawesome mix.
We do an episode where we justtrash everything.
Oh yeah, the upside downepisode the upside down super
awesome mix.
Yeah, we're just angry andcynical and every song sucks and
(30:19):
we found nothing positive.
Well, no, every song sucks andlike we found nothing positive?
Speaker 1 (30:22):
well, no, every song
sucks, except you bring nothing
but country music to the mix andyou're like I love it, I love
it.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
I like that too.
We could do that and you haveto only say nice things about
electronic music and metal andstuff.
You're like.
I loved minute 36 of this song, you know, yeah yeah, just stay
with it guys.
Okay, just stay with it, justyou know you need all 35 of
those minutes to warm up to thetrack.
Every single one, all right um.
(30:55):
Your last pick of the mix tracknumber number 11, is Bear Hill
by Raekwon.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Yeah, raekwon, one of
the founding members of Wu-Tang
Clan, first new album since2017.
It's called the Emperor's NewClothes, similar to Clips.
I just love this whole album.
This one has this really coolvideo where he literally turns
into a beast as he's entering arap battle, and it's really
worth checking out.
It's kind of funny.
(31:21):
I think people of my age, you goby mtv if you're watching, if
you're watching tv at all, andand you're you know you go by
mtv.
It's nothing but ridiculousness.
And there's still, I think,that there's a jersey shore
offshoot that's still on on theair and you know, like there's
no music videos, right, and sothe idea of a music video has
kind of left your mind.
But meanwhile, like youtube isjust massive.
(31:43):
So it's like there's stillreally high quality music videos
being put out there.
Yeah, because I think that's away for artists to still make
money.
Uh, because they're not doingit by album sales, and so it's
like put out great music videosand then and then get on tour
and charge a ton of money forsweatshirts and stuff like that.
But no, I mean, this is just areally just.
(32:07):
I just saw it from the openingcouple beats of this one.
I was all in on this song, sothis was my favorite from the
album, but just the whole albumis worth checking out.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
Yeah, very similar
notes to great opening beat.
Has that just classic rap songfeel and this is like a swagger
song.
You know, it's like one ofthose like confident like you,
just feel like you're about togo hard on something.
You know, like you, I could putthis in like an amp up track or
an amp up mix and just be readyto go after listening to, ready
to lift weights, run a fastmile, whatever it is.
(32:37):
You know, give a greatpresentation.
So it's a great, great trackand I was happy that you put
this on here because I love, love music like this.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
All right, final
track on the mix for this month,
your last pick.
It is Vampire Bat by GlassAnimals.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Yeah, shout out to
Jen.
You know co-host of, or one ofthe hosts of the shows on our
Super Awesome Mix podcast, Hershow what Are you Listening To?
And co-host with you on theBattle, which is actually
currently in its third season, Ibelieve.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Yeah, third season,
third season.
Yeah, we're trying to figureout the ultimate Yacht Rock song
, and so definitely go to theBattle, subscribe to that one,
give us a little love.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Absolutely, yeah, but
yes, the reason I shout Jen out
go to the battle, subscribe tothat one, give us a little love.
Absolutely, yeah, so, um, butyes, the reason I shout jen out
here is because I always thinkabout jen when I hear a glass
animals track, because I believeshe really likes them, um, but
I like just love them.
They also have a particularsound that they do with almost
every track of theirs, and thisis no different.
Like their music is just likestrange, but you find yourself
wanting to listen to it, um, andyou can't quite.
(33:41):
I don't know.
I struggled to kind of describewhy it's strange, but it just is
.
It might be something to dowith, like their, their vocals,
just the way that theymanipulate their their songs,
but I just kind of find myselflike vibing to it and I feel
like that's kind of them.
In a nutshell, you just likelisten to it and you're like,
yeah, I really like this.
Um, and again, like the lyricsare kind of nonsense and like
(34:02):
that's okay, like that doesn't.
I think that that's fine here,um, so it's a lot of fun, um,
but yeah, I really really likethe song and they've got a new,
uh new album yeah, this one wasinteresting because when I hear
glass animals a lot of timesthey they almost have I.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
The word I wrote down
was ephemeral right like.
Like.
That's the kind of sound that Iget from them, that it's just
like what is this?
This song, though, inparticular almost sounded a
little bit more straight hip hopthan compared to most of their
stuff, right Like.
I wouldn't necessarily justsquarely put this in the hip hop
genre, but it was just a littlebit more in that category.
(34:37):
So it was kind of interestingto me, just because I kind of
looked down like oh, this is alittle different from Glass
Animals, right Like.
But it was good.
I think I'm kind of with you.
It's like they have a qualityto them where they do kind of
suck you in and you know whentheir songs don't.
You know, we were just jokingabout metal songs that go on for
36 minutes.
(34:58):
It's like they're also good atkind of producing something
that's you know will suck you in, but they're also not taking it
to six and a half, sevenminutes right, right, totally.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
Yeah, I also really
like the line a kiwi is a cross
of a strawberry and a lime,which I just, I guess, just I
don't know why.
I just really like that.
It's kind of a funny thoughtand I I could see that I could
kind of see that being true.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
It is kind of yeah, I
could, you could convince me of
that yeah although then I think, why is everything strawberry,
kiwi right?
Like that's kind of a flavor.
So then am I doubling up onstrawberry that's true.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah, one and a half
parts strawberry.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Yeah which may be
okay that might be okay.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Yeah, I don't know,
okay, you know that's.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
We'll save that for
another show.
