SPEAKER_02 (00:08):
Welcome back to another super awesome mix.
My name is Matt Sidholm, alongside my fellow super
awesome mix host, the host ofWhat Are You Listening To?
It is Jen Tully.
Jen, welcome in.

SPEAKER_00 (00:20):
Hello, hello.
Glad to be here.

SPEAKER_02 (00:23):
All right.
We are going to do uh a newmusic mix this time for the
month of November.
It is our last new music mix ofthe year.
Next up, uh next month, we willdo our best of 2025.
I can't believe we've made itthrough another year, Jen.
This is wild.

SPEAKER_00 (00:40):
It's insane.
Every time I look at thecalendar and see that it's
November, I'm really just uhkind of shocked and blown away.
It doesn't seem possible.

SPEAKER_02 (00:48):
Yes, but in spite of the time passing, I think we
still uh continue to find greatmusic.
That's what we kind of marveledat going into this mix was just
wow, still still more greatmusic out there.

SPEAKER_00 (00:59):
Still lots of good stuff coming out here at the end
of the year.
And I will, I'm gonna caveatthis episode like I did our
last.
Um, if you're wondering whythere is no Florence in the
Machine on this playlist, umI've been so dedicated to
representing Sam's interestshere.
It's because over on Waylit, Ihave a whole album review of
Everybody Scream, uh, the newFlorence in the Machine album.

(01:21):
So if you're like Sam and I andyou're huge fans, please check
out this week's episode of WhatAre You Listening to, where we
dig into the new Florence in theMachine album.

SPEAKER_02 (01:30):
Yes, and that was that was an excellent episode.
Great review.

SPEAKER_00 (01:35):
Thank you.
I've like, we've got we had soOctober was a big month for me
between Taylor Swift andFlorence.
So uh I'm happy to be jumpinginto this uh this new this
November new music mix.
But let's start with your firsttrack.
Your first song for the NovemberNew Music Mix is a song called
Fall Moon by St.
Paul and the Broken Bones.

SPEAKER_02 (01:54):
Yes, uh St.
Paul and the Broken Bones.
They are led by Paul Janeway.
Um he is the Paul in St.
Paul.
Uh I got to see these guys livein Dallas a couple of years ago.
I mean, he's incredible, they'reincredible.
I mean, I just love the theirsound.
They're so soulful.
Um, they're out of Alabama, weirdly enough.

(02:16):
Um, but yeah, I mean, this thisnew album is is very true to
that sound.
I mean, and so I listened, Icouldn't wait.
I actually they released acouple singles early in the
year, and I waited until theyhad the whole album out so I
could listen to it and pick onesong from it.
Um, and I went with this one,Fall Moon, um, which is just
such a it's a it's true to theirsound, and it's a nice little

(02:41):
love song.
I I just call out the lyric thatit just stuck with me from the
first time I heard it.
I can't wait to get old and justtalk to you, which is just kind
of perfect, I feel like.

SPEAKER_00 (02:52):
I loved that line too.
And I thought that this song wasso amazingly sweet.
Like that's the note I just keptsaying over and over like it's
so amazingly sweet.
And it is, it's so soulful.
His voice is so amazing.
The funny thing is, whenever itfirst came on, for one hot
second, like maybe the first fewbars, I thought it was a
Christmas song.
I'm like, wait a minute, hasMatt thrown Christmas music into

(03:15):
this November new music mix?
Because it's it starts out, andI was like, oh, holiday song,
here we go, you know.
So then I was happy whenever Igot in and um and and saw that
it was just this reallybeautiful love song.

SPEAKER_02 (03:29):
Uh yeah, it would have also been odd with a title
like Fall Moon.

SPEAKER_00 (03:33):
I know.
We're dancing around theChristmas tree under the fall
moon, right?
Like we can make it work.

SPEAKER_02 (03:39):
That's right.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
It's like an echo equinox thing.
Yeah, yeah.
There you go.
Solstice.

SPEAKER_00 (03:43):
But I also I also thought that this song was
perfect for this time of yearbecause it's, you know, I love
the message that it it sharesthat sort of love is like all
year round, not just duringcuffing season, you know, when
everybody's looking to coupleup.
And so I did think it was like areally appropriate song for the
playlist this uh this month.

SPEAKER_02 (04:01):
All right.
Your first track, you've gotPrivate by the Neighborhood.

SPEAKER_00 (04:07):
Oh my goodness.
So this is a band I wasn't surewe were gonna get more new music
from.
Um, I I've mentioned it on um onWaylit before.
You know, I I love theneighborhood.
I have since they very firstcame out.
Most people know them by theirsong Sweater Weather, um, which
is maybe like one of my far downthe list of favorite tracks of
theirs.
It's not even one of my favoritesongs, um, but I do love the

(04:29):
band.
Um, and they have a new albumcoming out on November 14th
called Ultrasonic, that I thinkis gonna be so, so good if the
first three tracks that they'vereleased from it are any
indication.
Um, Private being one of them.
Um their last album was an albumcalled Chip Chrome and the
Monotone.
So I talked a lot about thatalbum on um What Are You
Listening to?
And then they had kind of like aweird dust-up, right?

(04:51):
They had um Brandon Fry, theirdrummer, had some trouble on the
road.
They were touring with theMaria's, and there were some
allegations about some thingsthat happened.
He got dismissed from the band.
Um, he checked himself intorehab, he publicly apologized,
and now he's back and they seemto have it together again.
So I'm uh I'm certainly notcondoning his previous behavior,

(05:15):
and I'm all for people gettingsecond chances and trying to be
better versions of themselves.
So I hope that this is what heneeded to get there because I
love this song.
Um, I just think it's so fun.
Um, I love the like the soundeffects in the background, you
know, the shh keeping itprivate.
Like I just think it's so coolthe way they do it.
Um so I think that this is gonnabe like a big hit for them, and

(05:38):
I hope that this album um leadsto an amazing tour that I am
able to get tickets to becausethis is a band I have not seen
live that I am dying to seelive.
What did you think of this song?
Are you a neighborhood fan?
We've never talked about them, Idon't think.

SPEAKER_02 (05:51):
I, you know, I looked it up because just based
on sound, I was like, I'm notsure if I know these guys.
And then uh when I saw SweaterWeather, I was like, oh, I know
that song, right?
Um, so yeah, that's definitelytheir biggest hit.
But yeah, I just thought thiswas so unique.
I I love the beat.
And then reading up on it, thefact that it sounds like part of
it was recorded on the leadsinger's phone, and then they

(06:13):
were using garage band, and Iwas like, this is kind of cool
because that stuff you'd seefrom like an up and that would
be Sam and I have always jokedabout could we put together like
a song based on Garage Band andsome other tools out there that
would get some streams onSpotify or whatever, right?
Like, could you cobble somethingtogether?
But obviously, we're notprofessional musicians, right?

(06:35):
So it was cool to hear like uhan established band like this
kind of use those tools um toreally good success.
Cause I just thought it was areally fun, like it was just a
really fun song, and you know, kind of you could take all sorts
of meanings, I think, from thelyrics.
Like, is this some sort ofaffair they're trying to keep
private?
I feel like one side of thispartnership is maybe a little

(06:57):
bit more private than the other.

SPEAKER_00 (06:59):
Yeah, I agree.
And I think there's so much todig into there, and a lot of
their songs are like that.
You know, I didn't think I wouldever love a song as much.
One of my favorite songs by themis a song called Devil's
Advocate, off of that ChipChrome and the Monotones album.
And it's kind of my go-to.
That's the one I go back to.
And now this one's maybe likedefinitely maybe not surpassing
it, but it's up there with it.

(07:20):
So um I'm I'm happy that I'mhappy that we have new music
from them.
But speaking of bands that Ilove, your second track is from
another favorite band of mine.
Um, and the third song on ourplaylist this week is a song
called Gone by Haim.

SPEAKER_02 (07:35):
Yeah, I think we featured the song Down to Be
Wrong earlier this year.
Um, and they were just releasinga few singles off of this new
album.
Um, but I just listened, theyfinally came out with the whole
album, listened to the wholething, and just like all their
men, I I just love this band andI love listening to their albums
kind of beginning to end.

(07:55):
Um this one's cool.
I picked this one just becausethey sample the song Freedom by
George Michael, which might bemy favorite George Michael song.
I'm not sure.
Um, but yeah, like I I love thatsong, so it was cool to hear it
with this and just sort of a newa new framing of it.
Uh, and and then I just love themessage here.
Like they're just kind of like, screw it, like we're gonna do

(08:18):
what we want to do.
Like the the I'm the gone partof this, I wasn't sure what to
expect just based on the titlefor sort of like it didn't tip
its hand on the theme.
But then you get to the sort offreedom uh in interpolation and
then kind of the lyrics, andyeah, they're just kind of like,
you know what?
We're we're gonna do what wewant to do.

(08:39):
Like what what you were tellingus to do isn't working.
And uh I just thought that wasawesome too, because this is
probably the point in theircareer where that's that's about
right, you know?

SPEAKER_00 (08:49):
Yeah.
And they're an established bandat this point.
I mean, these women have done somany, uh so much.
I mean, I I like I can't evenlist off everything that's like
flying through my head rightnow, from acting to consulting
on soundtracks, you know.
Estee Haym was a big consultantfor the music in the White Lotus
series, you know.

(09:10):
Um they're all sort of out doingDanielle produced the album.
Um, they're all out there doingthings.
Um the other sister, I'm like, why is her name escaping me
right now?
But she's uh an actress, youknow, she was in um Alana.
The Alana Thomas Anderson movie.
Yeah, Alana Haim.
Yeah, that's right.
Alana did um Mystic, not MysticPizza, um, Licorice Pizza, you

(09:32):
know, like they're all doing somuch.
They're so involved.

SPEAKER_02 (09:37):
You showed your age then.
It's a long decade.
It's Mystic Pizza, right?

SPEAKER_01 (09:42):
Right.
I'm gonna continue to show myage throughout this playlist.
You just wait.
It's about to get good,listeners.
It's about to get good.

SPEAKER_00 (09:52):
But I like you, I too, I love this band.
I'm so glad you and Sam havesort of embraced them along with
me as well.
And I I also love that this was,you know, the George Michael
sample in this.
I love the song Freedom, andhe's having a moment right now,
too.
Can we talk about how he wassampled on Life of a Showgirl as
well?
She has a song on that albumcalled Father Figure.

(10:13):
That's right.
That's right.
That is not a cover and isn'teven a sample, but it sounds
like the way she sings thechorus is vaguely reminiscent,
enough that she gave him awriting credit for it, as did
the Heim Sisters on this song.

SPEAKER_02 (10:25):
So I was gonna say, yeah, she kind of tipped her
tipped her hat to George Michaelon that one, even though I I
kind of I was like, there's noway she's doing a cover when I
saw that on there, but yeah, that that's cool that she kind
of gave him a little tribute.

SPEAKER_00 (10:38):
Yeah, and they and like I said, that both bands
gave him writing credit on thesong.
I love that.
I think that's like turnabouts, fair play, like that you know,
they're they're doing it theright way.
And so um, I love that GeorgeMichael's kind of having a
moment right now with with thesefemale artists that I love.
So, and I think George Michaelwould love that too.
Like, I think that he would bestoked to see that his music is
sort of living on and beingrearranged.

(11:00):
And I mean, you know, there's alot we could say about father
figure from this year after babygirl, too.
So he's having a moment.

SPEAKER_02 (11:08):
All right, track four.
It is sideways, and this one'sby Balu Brigata.

SPEAKER_00 (11:13):
Yes, this song is from their debut album.
Um, it's called Portal, whichwas released at the end of
August, actually.
And they have a couple of EPsthat they've released, um, but
this is their first full-lengthalbum.
And I love these guys.
These um, this is a band fromNew Zealand.
They formed in 2016, um, andthey're led by um brothers that

(11:34):
are multi-instrumentalists, um,and they're just a fun band.
If you've not gotten into BaloBrigada or listened to any of
them, any of their music, getinto it.
Um, I think you'll dig it.
They have, you know, their songsdon't all sound the same.
They've got kind of a widevariety that stays in this, you
know, a similar genre, but itdoes sound different.
It's not all the same.
And this song is just such abop.

(11:55):
It makes me happy.
Like I feel like anytime I turnit on, I just start to smile.
And I love the line that says,Um, whatever happened to a fresh
start, oh, maybe civil is a lostart.
And I was like, uh-huh.
I like that.
I like that a lot.
Were you familiar with theseguys?
Did you have any idea aboutBallet Brigado?

SPEAKER_02 (12:17):
I I had no I had no sense of them prior to this
song, but I love the beat.
Just right off the bat, I waslike, okay, this is cool.
You know, I'm into this.
And then I wrote down that samelyric you just called out
because I was like, that'sthat's really brilliant and
appropriate, not just for thisalmost feels this feels like an
argument between like a couple.
Um, but I mean, I thinkgenerally we could probably say

(12:39):
whatever happened to a freshstart, maybe civil is a lost
art.
I feel like it generally inpublic, we're we're kind of
probably facing that.
But um the other line I calledout is can we just put it to bed
because you're looking at mesideways?
And again, it's just this wholesong just feels like this.
Can we just get over this?
Can we just move on?
And whoever he's with is like, nope, we're not doing that.

(13:03):
And so I just thought that wascool.
And it's over this sort of happybeat.
So um if anything, like it'sjust gonna put you in a good
mood, at least uh for as far aslike listening to it.
Uh, but it's a cool song aswell.
So yeah, really interested.
And I I like uh I'm interestedin digging into more of their
music on this on this debutalbum.

SPEAKER_00 (13:24):
Yeah, check them out for sure.
That they have another greatsong on the album that's called
So Cold.
That's another hit um that Ilike off of this album they just
released.
And I've been getting servedthese guys a lot on Spotify, and
so I think it's been I've beenlistening to a lot of Almost
Monday and Royal Otis, and theykind of sit in that genre.
Um, so I've been I've beenlistening to them a lot.
Uh check them out.
I think you I think you'll bepleased if you do, listeners.

SPEAKER_02 (13:46):
Nice.

SPEAKER_00 (13:47):
All right.
Well, that takes us to trackfive.
Matt, I'm so excited to talkabout this one.
Your next pick is a song calledTroubled Paradise by Tuck Smith
and The Restless Heart.

SPEAKER_02 (13:58):
Yeah, these guys, so kind of a cool story.
Uh, they had like a record deal, and then they booked the stadium
tour with Motley Crue and DefLeopard.
That was like right off the bat, okay?
But that was at the beginning of2020, and then COVID hit.
So their album gets released, and then the stadium tour gets

(14:19):
canceled.
Any promotion around the albumkind of dies out.
They actually end up partingways with their label.
So it's like all of these thingsjust fall apart.
Well, Tuck Smith is like, allright, well, I'm gonna start my
own label.
It's called Gypsy Rose Records, and uh they decide to release
this album under that.
There's actually an EP that theyhave coming out, but I mean, I

(14:40):
listened to the whole thing andjust couldn't get enough.
They have such a cool, you know, they were gonna tour with like
Def Leopard and Motley Crue, andthey kind of reminded me of
something from the 80s, thissort of like classic rock kind
of sound to them.
Um, and they're just kind offun.
And this song in particular isjust sort of this classic rock

(15:00):
and roll story about a youngcouple trying to make it, you
know.
I don't know, it just remindedme of so many songs uh uh from a
certain era, but kind ofupdated.
And uh I just I just reallyenjoyed it.
So it was a fun discovery forme.

SPEAKER_00 (15:18):
Oh, this one is for all the like 80s and 90s babies
out there.
If you thought I was showing myage by the Mystic Pizza
reference, well, here I goagain.
Because when I first listened tothis and I had to go, I I saw
the name of the song, but Ididn't see the name of the
artist.
And I promise you, Matt, and Idon't know, I I think you're old
enough that you'll remember thisis this song and this artist,

(15:41):
but I was like, is this ugly kidJoe?
Is that what is happening righthere?

SPEAKER_02 (15:50):
Everything about you, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (15:52):
That's the one.
And so when I first heard it,I'm like, is that guy back?
That's immediately who I thoughtit was.
I'm like, this is crazy.
So then once I saw that it wasnot him, but they sounded so
much like him, I was all in.
I'm like, this took me rightback to like, you know, middle
school, high school, early highschool days.
And I loved it.

(16:12):
I thought it was so much fun.
I feel like I do have to say, Ithink Sam would not love this
song.

SPEAKER_02 (16:18):
He'd hate it.
He'd hate it.
I brought it for you.
I brought it for you, Jeff.

SPEAKER_01 (16:23):
Thank you.
I'm like, I gotta represent Samhere and say, I think he'd have
words about this, but for me, Iwas all in.
I love the miscellaneous.

SPEAKER_02 (16:37):
I think you would say something like, oh, it was a
very nice song, but I'm not sureif it was for me.

SPEAKER_01 (16:46):
Right.

unknown (16:47):
Right.

SPEAKER_01 (16:48):
I just like that's all the first on first upon
first listen, that's all I couldthink of is like, ooh, Sam is
not gonna like Google.
So I'm we're we're stillrepresenting him, even though he
is he's here in spirit, always.

SPEAKER_02 (17:02):
That's right.

SPEAKER_01 (17:03):
That's right.

SPEAKER_02 (17:04):
Well, I think I think one song he would love is
actually your next pick.
Okay, so this is somethingyou're not showing your age
here.
Okay, this is very much anupdated track.
This is Stardust by Big Wild.

SPEAKER_00 (17:17):
Oh, if you guys like if if you never take a
recommendation from me, takethis one.
I love this song.
I love this song, I think it'sso good.
And Big Wild is actually um anartist named Jackson Stell, um,
and his stage name is Big Wild.
Um, he's an American electronicuh music producer, songwriter,
vocalist, engineer.

(17:37):
He does it all.
Um, and he had an album uhcalled Wild Child that this song
is on that released at the endof, I think it released end of
August, maybe.
Um, but I have just been likelistening to it over and over
and over again.
And I love this particulartrack.
It kind of gives me folkimplosion vibes.
Um, from there's they had a bighit called Natural One that was

(17:59):
on the kids' soundtrack.
But um, that's what I firstthought of when I heard it.
I'm like, oh, it sounds kind offolk implosion-y, I dig that.
Um, and then as a performer, youknow, he is apparently insane.
His live shows where he's likeswitching back and forth
between, you know, drum pads, synths, keyboards, singing, like
he kind of reminds me a littlebit too of a modern day.
Again, I'm referencing, I'mmaking lots of references this

(18:22):
episode, but um he reminds me alittle bit of um New Radicals.
Remember when when that when GetWhat You Give comes out?
Like this kind of feels a littlebit like an updated, like for
the now times for 2025 versionof New Radicals.

SPEAKER_02 (18:36):
Uh, that's a great comparison.
I I love New Radicals.
I think I've brought almost uhall the songs on their one album
to the mix at some point or theother.
I've found a theme where theycould fit under.
Um but this was a really cooltrack, and I think the thing I
appreciated it is that, orappreciated about it, was that
um, you know, it's titledStardust.
The lyrics are very likereferential to that type of

(19:00):
thing.
But then if you drop the lyrics, the sound of it is just so
ethereal that it just kind ofworks on its own.
So I I just think it's alwayscool when there's that matchup
that it's like you don't evenneed to tell me.
You could call the Stardust, just make it an instrumental,
and I'd be in.
I think it totally works.
Um yeah, so I think that um thatwas I don't know, it just worked

(19:22):
well.
I I like that about it.

SPEAKER_00 (19:25):
I agree.
I think that this is a reallycool song, so definitely uh
check this one out.
Um, and and like I said, if youlike this song, go and check out
the rest of their music.
It all kind of lands in the samespot, um, but is super good.

SPEAKER_02 (19:37):

SPEAKER_00 (20:21):
Um, all right.
Our next track, we're kind ofswitching gears here, getting a
little more serious with thesong called Gun in Every Home by
Bruce Springsteen.

SPEAKER_02 (20:30):
Obviously, there's the Springsteen movie that's out
in theaters right now.
I have not seen it, and I thinkit's getting kind of mixed
reviews.
Um, but it's specifically aboutthe time in his life where Bruce
wrote the album Nebraska, uh,which was very much a departure
from his uh normal music.
We talked about Nebraska inseason two of the battle, where

(20:50):
we're doing uh a true crimebattle, um, because the title
track, Nebraska, refersspecifically to the uh
Merriweather crime spree of ofthat time period, and that kind
of inspired uh that song byBruce Springsteen.
But he recorded that album inhis kitchen, like he essentially
recorded a demo, and um thateventually became the real the

(21:14):
real thing because when hebrought the band into it, it
just he just didn't think itworked, right?
Like it just didn't have thesame resonance that he wanted
with this album.
Um, but nobody ever heard thosefull tracks with the bands and
everything until now.
So in in you know, concert withthe movie release, they released
what they're calling ElectricNebraska.

(21:34):
So here's the Nebraska album, and it's you know, they they put
four CDs out.
So they have the uh kind ofNebraska album as we know it.
They put out Electric Nebraska, where the whole band's with
them, and then they put out abunch of other songs he recorded
at the time, some of which wouldlater become part of the Born in
the USA album, which of coursewas you know a monster hit, uh

(21:57):
including the title track Bornin the USA.
I say all that because we didget a few new tracks, and this
is one of them, okay, Gun inEvery Home.
And uh I just thought this wasan incredibly written song.
And thinking about having youknow written this in 1980, 81,
82, somewhere in that area, youknow, I'm just gonna call out.
I could read all the lyrics, butjust calling out the third verse

(22:20):
in particular.
Sometimes I want to take mylittle boy and hold him in my
arms, shield him from all pain, protect him from all harm, from
a world gone crazy now, from aworld that's gone wrong all
wrong, but I don't know what todo.
No, I don't know what to do.
And I just thought that was oneincredible songwriting, but also
just like it kind of blew mymind that it was written 45

(22:41):
years ago.
But somebody listening to it nowcould probably completely relate
if you have children.
So, anyway, the whole thing'sgreat.
I haven't seen the movie, Ican't speak to that, but um, I
will say this electric Nebraskarelease is worth your time.

SPEAKER_00 (22:55):
Well, I'm glad that you went through that because
all of my questions about thissong were related to like, okay,
is this new?
Is this old music that justnever got released?
Is it so I'm glad you clearedthat up for me?
And you know what my first noteon here was is this a protest
song?
Like, I that's what I felt like.
I'm like, and now knowing thatit was written in 1988, I'm

(23:16):
like, wow, uh, if this isanother instance where I'll say,
look, you don't have to loveBruce Springsteen, but you have
to respect the man.
Like that that's insane.
That a song written 45 yearsago, especially about a very
specific topic, is stillrelevant to the point that I'm
questioning if it is alegitimate protest song for now,

(23:37):
right?
Like that's amazing to me.
I think that's just that speaksto a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

SPEAKER_02 (23:43):
Yeah, I agree.
It it kind of blew my mind thathe had written this so long ago
and I was listening to it going, yeah, I could kind of I it I
have a son, I know exactly whatthis means, you know, like it
just it it hits home.
So yeah, hey, let's shift gears.
Let's shift gears a little bithere for track eight.
Okay, big shift, actually.
We might get the bend from this, okay.

SPEAKER_01 (24:05):
Wait, wait, wait.

SPEAKER_02 (24:06):
This one is called Telephone Busy by Five Seconds
of Summer.

SPEAKER_00 (24:10):
That's right.
For the kids out there, fivesauce.

SPEAKER_01 (24:14):
It's so funny every time I hear.

SPEAKER_00 (24:16):
That's how my uh my daughter and her friends refer.
Five sauce.
Um, but yeah, this song will beon their new album uh called
Everyone's a Star that'sreleasing on November 14th.
Um, and I loved, I'm not a hugeFive Seconds of Summer fan.
Again, I do hear them because Ihave teenagers running around in
my life here um with my daughterand her friends.

(24:37):
But um, it totally the firsttime I heard their music and
then I heard this songspecifically, it was really
giving me vibes of um futurelove sex sounds by Justin
Timberlake, that album and thesongs that are on it.
And so that's what I love aboutthis song.
And I hope that the album endsup being that way, where it's
just a like, it's not deep.

(24:57):
You're not looking for lyricalmeaning here.
It just makes you want to grabyour girls and go dancing, you
know, like it just makes youwant to have a good time.
Um, and so I really like I thinkthat this is just a super fun
song, and I'm excited about umthe rest of the album.
And I have I think I feel like Ireally dug into like the songs
from down under category thisweek because this is also an

(25:20):
Australian band.
Um, whereas Bally Brigada isfrom New Zealand.
So I was uh I was staying inthat region a little bit this
week.
But this is a super fun, dancysong.
And if you're if you're onlyfamiliar with Five Seconds of
Summer, you know, from some oftheir bigger hits and you don't
love them or you feel like maybethey're too teeny bopper for
you, maybe give this one alisten, especially if you like
Justin Timberlake, because Ithink that I think that this

(25:41):
album's gonna end up being alittle bit more um more dancy
like that.

SPEAKER_02 (25:45):
I was gonna say this is uh I think this is a really
fun song.
I it felt like a summer song,right?
And we're getting it inNovember, but it just feels like
I feel like some corporation'sgonna pay them enough money to
use this in an ad campaign nextsummer.
Um, but yeah, it's a it's areally fun song.
It should be part of your spinclash, it should be part of your
morning routine and justwhatever.

(26:06):
It's gonna put you in a greatmood.
So great, great pick.

SPEAKER_00 (26:08):
Yeah, this was one too that I thought, well, if we
are representing Sam, this isone I think he'd add to his
dance or is one of his runningmixes, right?
Like I think he could run tothis one.
All right.
Our next track is a song calledAsking for a Friend by the Foo
Fighters.

SPEAKER_02 (26:23):
Yeah, Jen, you've been uh holding down the Ford
for Sam by touting Florence inthe Machine.
I'm gonna hold it down byincluding this new Foo Fighters
single.
Okay.
They uh they announce a tourcoming in 2026.
People think there's a new albumcoming, but there's been no
official announcement.
Um, I think this song was wasreally cool.
I mean, just great rock sound, like we're used to, great

(26:45):
vocals.
There's a great guitar solo nearthe end.
And uh the question they'reasking for a friend, is this
real or is this the end?
And uh I'm not sure if this is areflection of the current state
of the world or just the currentstate of of their band, right?
Because they've been around fora while, and some people are

(27:06):
like, is this is this it for foofighters, right?
And so um I I think it's it'scool when when songs kind of
have that dual interpretationlike that, but at the very
least, it's just it's just greatrock music, and I think you'd
appreciate it just for that.

SPEAKER_00 (27:20):
Yeah, I agree.
I mean, I you know, the foofighters are kind of hit or miss
for me.
Like the songs that I love oftheirs, I really love.
And then everything else is kindof like, okay, yeah, it's the
Foo Fighters song.
Um, and I was I was nervousabout listening to this one
because I and I know people lovethe Foo Fighters for Dave Grohl.
I love the Foo Fighters forTaylor Hawkins.

(27:40):
I was a big Taylor Hawkins fan,and so it was really sad for me
when we lost Taylor Hawkins.
And I think Elon Rubin does agreat job here from a drumming
perspective.
I I think those are reallydifficult shoes to fill anyway.
Like, you know, in Dave Grohl'sband, for those that somehow
don't know, Dave Grohl was thedrummer for Nirvana originally.

(28:00):
Um, and so I think that's a lot,that's a high pressure position
to be in for any drummer for theFoo F for the Foo Fighters.
So I think that Ruben did agreat job on this song.
I just, I don't know, there wasa part of me that selfishly
wanted them to kind of be done, you know, like Led Zeppelin when
John Bonham died, they just sortof like hung it up.
Um and so I kind of thought thatwould be it for the Foo

(28:21):
Fighters, where you know, DaveGrohl would be like, I've been
through this with Nirvana, I'vebeen through this with Foo, like
I think maybe we're done.
So that's that's I I say all ofthat to say I I did love that
that that kind of all featuredin this song too.
Like I think they're asking thesame questions that we all are
about the band and and and thefuture state of it.
So I did.

(28:41):
I I like asking for a friend.
This is this was a Foo Fighterstrack that I put on my yes list.

SPEAKER_02 (28:46):
Nice.
All right.
Uh, so your next pick, and andthis one threw me off for a
second because I thought itmight be a cover song, and then
I realized I was reading thetitle incorrectly.
So I'm gonna read it the correctway here.
Track 10 is Penny Lame, and itis by Noga Ares.

SPEAKER_00 (29:02):
That is right.
So this song came out as asingle um in September, and Noga
Ares is uh she's an Israelielectronic musician and
producer, um, and I love her.
I discovered her back in umprobably like 2021, I think is
when it came out.
She had an album um come outcalled Kids that had a song

(29:22):
called Views on it that I love.
I'm like, I look for views.
I imagine that's gonna show upsomewhere on uh on What Are You
Listening to um this seasonbecause I originally, like I
said, discovered the album backin 2021, just resurfaced it
again, and have been just sogetting into it.
And so when I found that she haduh a new single on set that came

(29:44):
out in September, I just likejumped all over it.
Um so this is a super like uhthis is an interesting track for
her.
You know, I think that she umshe kind of switches back and
forth between genres.
Sometimes her songs sound dancy, sometimes they're a little more
rappy.
Sometimes they're superelectronic.
Um, but I just think that thatshe's a great artist that people

(30:05):
need to uh to check out, even ifuh if you don't dig into
everything, check out views, thesong Views from the kids album
and this one.
And if you don't like it, okay, you can pass and move along, but
give it a try.
I think you might be into it.
Were you familiar with her atall?

SPEAKER_02 (30:19):
I I had not heard her.
Um, what's what's amazing atjust hearing you describe it is
one of my notes was this is areally interesting sound.
And then I wrote, it's not quiterap or electronic, and you just
ran down.
She kind of switches genres alittle bit between rap, and I'm
like, okay, so I'm still got agood enough ear to figure that

(30:41):
one out.
Um, but yeah, I mean, but inthat sense, it like keeps your
attention, right?
Because it is sort of, you know, vacillating a little bit between
sounds and and genres like that.
And I think too lyrically, itjust sounds like uh someone
who's really frustrated with thelack of attention she's getting
from her partner.

(31:01):
Um, I don't know if I'm hearingthat correctly, but that's kind
of what I was hearing there.
Uh so I yeah, I just it's justinteresting.
It's something I want to dig inmore into her music because I'm
like, there's something to hearfor sure.

SPEAKER_00 (31:15):
Yeah, listen to the song Views.
I think you'll really dig thatone.
Um, it's it's a very, very coolsong with a fun, funky sound.
And also, too, she opened for umFlorence and the Machine in 2022
at Madison Square Garden.
And so I'm also hopeful that ifuh if Florence, well, we know
Florence is touring forEverybody Screams.
I hope maybe we get uh maybe weget a tour appearance as well on

(31:37):
the Everybody Screams tour.
Um, all right.
Well, we're gonna keep it in theuh the powerful female vocalist
lane with our second to lasttrack um with a song called If
the World Burns Down by CaseyMusgraves.

SPEAKER_02 (31:51):
All right, so this was my favorite of all of my new
tracks.
Um, it is from the soundtrack toseason two of the Netflix show
Nobody Wants This, which, similar to the uh new Bruce
Springsteen movie, I haven'tseen this show.
And there's of course a zillionshows out there, but anyway, I
saw it come up on my Netflixsuggestions.
That's not what led me to this.

(32:11):
It was actually more the CaseyMusgraves has a new song, kind
of led me to this.
Um I was really excited.
I was like, all right, let megive this a listen.
And I just thought it was anamazing song.
And it's just it's you know, similar to Fall Moon.
It's it's a love song, and butit's it's real simple, but not a
cliched message.
It it's just so if everythingfalls apart, just know you were

(32:34):
it for me.
And I'm like, that's justperfect, you know, it's not
really sappy at all, but it sayseverything, right?
And I was just like, this issuch a great song.
So it's one I've listened to uhI don't know how many times
already, but one I'll probablycontinue to listen to.
So yeah, this this was myfavorite of my picks.

SPEAKER_00 (32:54):
This was my favorite of all of our picks, actually.
I love this song.
I this is my favorite song onour playlist this week, for
sure.
Um, and Casey Musgrave justknows how to sing a ballad.
I mean, this brought me back tolike Love is a Wild Thing off of
her Golden Hour album, which isa no-skip album for me.
Like I will listen to everysingle song on that album over

(33:16):
and over again and be happyevery time.
Um, and this song just broughtme back to that, just a
beautiful love song.
Um, I just think it's perfect.
So that this one is oh, I amit's gonna be on constant
repeat.
It already is from the firstmoment you sent it over, and I
know that I'm gonna be over andover and over again.
And it also made me want tocheck out the rest of the

(33:37):
soundtrack for the show.
I'm like, you know, I think ifthis song is is on that
soundtrack, I want to know whatelse they have going on.

SPEAKER_02 (33:43):
Yeah, and I might even check out the show itself.
I mean, if it if thesoundtrack's as good, right?

unknown (33:49):
Right.

SPEAKER_02 (33:49):
But we'll start with the music.

SPEAKER_01 (33:53):
Right, right.
Sorry, Netflix.
I'm here for the music.

SPEAKER_02 (34:02):
All right.
Well, let's finish this off.
Uh, we we've joked about youshowing your age, but I think
you probably really do it onthis last pick, okay?
But I'm I'm happy you did it,okay.
Track 12.
This is appropriately enough.
12 Gates by Cheap Trick.

SPEAKER_00 (34:17):
Okay.
Yes, I know I'm showing my age,but I have a reason.
So I'm gonna get into it here.
This is um from Cheap Trick hasa new album.
It's called All Washed Up, um,which also drops on November
14th.
Uh, like some of the otheralbums or songs featured on the
show this week.
Their albums are coming out.
Um, November 14th is gonna be abig new music day.

(34:39):
Um, but this is their firstalbum since 2021, and I did not
know that.
I had to go look it up.
I'm like, is this the firstCheap Trick album since 1985?
The answer is no.
So I'm definitely not a superfan in terms of like, I haven't
followed this band their wholelife.
Of course, I know like thepopular Cheap Trick songs.
I like Cheap Tricks.

(35:00):
Um, but I added this song, one, because I think it is a good
one.
I think it's representative ofthe band.
Um, but I wanted to see what thekids thought of this one.
And I'll tell you why.
I have always thought from thevery first moment I heard Arcade
Fire, I think Wim Butler, thelead singer of Arcade Fire, and
Robin Xander have really similarvoices.

(35:23):
And so I'm wondering if a kidjust listened to this and they
didn't know, you know, thatCheap Trick was a band that
their parents listened to, I'mwondering if they would think,
like, oh, this kind of soundsarcade fire-ish.
You know, like I so that'sreally why I put it on there.
Is I'm hoping that there's someinteresting discussion we get
maybe on social media about thissong and if it does still

(35:45):
translate, or if I'm justfeeling, you know, the nostalgia
vibes again and wanting tosqueeze them into this arcade
fire.
But I really did as I listenedto this, I thought if this came
out as an arcade fire song, ifit if you added just, you know,
dialed the electronic up, asmidge, like I feel like kids
might be into it, but I don'tknow.
What do you think?

SPEAKER_02 (36:05):
Yeah, that's interesting.
I didn't well, first of all, I'mwith you, and then I was like,
hey, well, what first new albumin 30 years?
And then it's like, nope, itcame out with one like three
years ago.
Okay, well, just have beenkeeping up, but that's okay.

SPEAKER_01 (36:17):
Yeah, I missed that one.

SPEAKER_02 (36:19):
Um, but I I like the parallel.
I I think you might havesomething there.
I I think you know, there'sprobably some influence uh of
Cheap Trick on Arcade Fire, andso uh that that would be kind of
fascinating to hear what peoplepeople think.
Um, but yeah, I I do thinkthere's there's probably some
crossover there for sure.
Um, but just on its own, I thinkthis is a good song, and I'm

(36:42):
kind of interested to dig intoum this new album.
I I thought it sounded reallygood, and I also think it's kind
of cool when these older artistscome out with these songs, and
this song just seemed so full ofhope.
And I was like, look at this.
These guys have probably beenthrough a lot of stuff, and
they're certainly on the uh theback end of their careers and

(37:04):
and probably their lives, butit's like, man, like this is I
thought it was just really coolthat they'd put out a song like
this that was just I I felt likefull of hope.
Um, so yeah, I don't know.
I thought that was it was justreally cool, and I was surprised
I liked it as much as I did.

SPEAKER_00 (37:20):
I honestly I was too.
Like I said, I didn't realizethey had new music three years
ago, and so um it's again, it'snot like I've been tracking them
since the 80s, but um I thoughtthis was a good song, and it
reminded me of some of the youknow, the cheap trick songs that
I do love that were popular fromback in the day.
And so, yes, the song standsalone for sure.
Give it a listen.
I do like its hopeful message, but I did find the arcade fire

(37:43):
parallel kind of interesting, and I'm wondering if I'm the
only other person that hasthought of them as similar
bands.

SPEAKER_02 (37:49):
All right, well, there you have it, another new
