Speaker 1 (00:00):
That's right, folks.
It is me, michael Holmes, hostof Superhero Politics Podcast.
I know you guys are wonderingwhere has this guy been.
It's been over a year since hedropped any new content and you
guys have just been out there inlimbo and purgatory, and I
apologize, but I've got a verygood reason.
(00:20):
I've had a lot going on in thelast year, so this was really a
hiatus for the podcast.
We're getting back in the swingof things.
It's just really a lot going onin my personal life, and so I
had to make some very difficultdecisions about what I had to
prioritize.
Unfortunately, one of thethings that I had to put aside
for time's sake is I don't knowhow much time I spent here with
(00:43):
you guys on the podcast, but hey, wasn't going into retirement.
We had a great launch in 2020and we've been going strong
through 2023.
We knew that we were going tocome back.
Today is just me being herewith you guys saying I'm back.
We're going to return to thegreat content that you guys got
used to, that you guys werecontinuing to email and write
(01:05):
about.
But today I just wanted to sayI'm back and let you guys know
where I've been, what I've beenup to and how the landscape of
my personal life, professionallife, political life have all
has changed since the last timeI got a chance to record.
So we're going to start at thebeginning here.
And so you guys know I'm anelected official.
(01:26):
Back in 2023, in November, I wasup for re-election.
I don't know if I told you guysthe story of my first election,
how it came down to a singlevote.
This time was not as close.
I was able to win with 60% ofthe vote to be re-elected as the
city council member for Ward 6in my city.
I was also elected by thatcouncil to serve as mayor pro
(01:48):
tem, which has kept me extremelybusy on behalf of the city
During that time.
In 2023, I launched my owncompany and so I founded HMA
Consulting Group LLC.
You can find us on the webwwwhmaconsultinggroupcom.
I left corporate America tofound my own company and we've
(02:11):
had a lot going on.
I just wanted to come back andsay to you guys that there are a
great deal of love that I havefor you guys and the response to
the podcast.
As you can see here, I amwearing the official merch of
the Superhero Politics podcastcoming very soon.
That's another thing we wereworking on designing to make
(02:32):
sure that you guys are able tojoin in and be part of the
family, as you guys are able towear our podcast.
Let's talk about it Now.
Obviously, there's a lot goingon in the comic book world as
well as the political world.
Since the last time we weretogether, marvel has hit some
rough patches and DC has triedto reform itself under James
(02:56):
Gunn and had some really roughoutings.
We have a lot of thingshappening in the Gaza Strip the
atrocity of October 7th, whereHamas attacked Israel, and a
catastrophic loss of life there.
We've seen the sittingpresident of the United States,
who was running for re-election,step aside, and his vice
(03:20):
president is now the candidate, kamala Harris is facing Donald
Trump, and we are less than 20days out now.
The candidate, kamala Harris isfacing Donald Trump, and we are
less than 20 days out from theelection.
We're less than 20 days outbefore we decide who's going to
be our president.
Either we're going to have apresident serve non-consecutive
terms, which we haven't had in100 years, or we're going to
(03:41):
have our first female presidentof the United States, and that
is a big deal, and there's somuch more to talk about.
As we dig into the parallelsbetween comic books and politics
.
The undercurrent of thispolitical lifestyle that we live
is permeating our comics andhow we read comics, how we view
(04:01):
comics, how we watch comic bookmovies, how comics are written,
we see the wave of diversity andnow the backlash to diversity.
We're seeing more iterations ofour comic book heroes coming to
the forefront and we're seeingnew versions, everything from
the absolute Superman, batmanand Wonder Woman I mean the new
(04:23):
formations of that.
We've seen a new Justice Leagueforming around Nightwing.
We're watching more charactersin Marvel come forward.
There's talks of a blue Marvelfilm.
There's talks of the newAvengers, the Captain America
Brave New World is coming out.
That trailer was amazing, introducing Red Hulk, and so
(04:44):
there's a lot of stuff going on,but politics is intertwined in
all that.
So as we continue to think aboutcomics, we also have to apply
that to what we think and knowabout the world.
Folks say I read comics to getaway from politics, and I'm like
.
Reading is fundamental, becausethere's no way that you can
read comics and get away frompolitics.
(05:05):
As we think about theseintersections and something that
we've talked about now for thelast three plus years is we are
Americans and we are a global.
We're Americans, but we're alsopart of a global community.
One of the things that unitesus is our love for the comic
book genre, and that overcomes alot of things, guys.
(05:28):
That overcomes our religiousdifferences.
That overcomes oursocioeconomic differences.
That overcomes our racialdifferences.
That overcomes our geography.
Some of the great things thatI've experienced in conducting
this podcast is the responsethat I've gotten from around the
world.
Being able to look and see thatyour podcast has been
(05:51):
downloaded from places thatyou've seen on the map or,
unfortunately for myself, thatI've been able to travel from
Russia to Eastern Europe, toSouth America, has been great,
yeah.
So let's talk about the electiona little bit.
Let's talk about my election.
I told you, guys, I would letyou know where I've been, what
(06:12):
I've been doing and howeverything went Of 2023, that I
was gonna seekelection and, likeI said earlier, running for
election, running for office, isnot easy.
I know you see millions ofpolitical ads and I know you
can't watch anything withoutseeing an ad from a particular
(06:32):
candidate, whether it's Harrisor Trump or whatever it may be.
You can't really escape them.
Political season is what it is.
If you're watching football, grey's Anatomy or whatever it is
be, you can't really escapethem.
Political season is what it is.
If you're watching football, grey's Anatomy or whatever it is
that you're watching Supermanand Lois, you're going to see
political acts.
So I decided to run forre-election in 2023.
And thank God, there's not asuper long election cycle.
(06:54):
So you file for election orre-election in July and the
election is in November.
You've got a few months to dothat and you do the whole
political circuit thing, likeyou go to forums, you speak at
places, all this stuff.
It's really different being anincumbent versus being a
challenger or an insurgent, which is someone who is seeking
(07:15):
to unseat that incumbent.
Prior to this, in 2019, I wasthe insurgent candidate.
I was the guy who was seekingto unseat the incumbent.
Now I was on the other side.
I was the guy in office in theseat and I had a challenger who
decided that they wanted to runto lead the district.
That's democracy.
(07:36):
We love it, we need it.
It needs to go forwardunencumbered, and so wasn't
upset about the challenge at all.
I thought it was good.
One of the reasons why I ran inmy district is that my
predecessor had run unopposedNobody just bothered to do it
and I was able to run the firstelection and win, and then I was
(07:59):
able to file in 2023 andultimately won that race by
about 20 points.
It was a safe election, goodturnout.
It was a good Democraticelection.
So during that time gotreelected in 2023.
I was able to then look at whatwe were doing here in the city
(08:23):
and see all the cool stuff.
I was the chair of our brandingrebrand project here that's
gotten international acclaim.
I've been able to lead our cityin public speaking, doing a
state of the city address.
I've also been able to parlaythat into national opportunities
, potentially leading a nationaltask force on economic
(08:47):
development or race and equitystudies.
So all these things have beenhappening as a result of my
election win in 2023.
That's why I've been so busy, because I've been traveling all
over the place.
My schedule has been ultrapacked.
I've had speaking engagementson the weekends and stuff like
that Normally, when I would havea chance to come back and be
with you guys to record.
(09:08):
That's consumed my time.
My family is also part of thatcalculation.
We just celebrated our 28thwedding anniversary.
My oldest she is a junior incollege and doing exceedingly
well.
My youngest, cameron, is asenior in high school and going
off to college next year.
We'll be empty nesters.
They take up so much of yourenergy because they're preparing
(09:30):
to become adults.
I had to take a step back and Isaid I've got all this public
responsibility and a personalresponsibility, but there was
something else burning that Iwanted to accomplish, and I
always had the entrepreneurialspirit, which is why I started
this podcast and why it was soeasy for me to jump into this.
(09:51):
I like to create.
I'm a creative at heart.
This is another outlet for meto share how I think, how I feel
, how my mind processes, how Icreate things with other folks.
It gives me a chance to expressmyself in a way that other
opportunities don't.
In politics, you have to be verymeasured.
You have to watch what you say.
You have to understand theaudience that you're with.
(10:13):
You have to make sure that yourmessage is consistent.
All of these things go in toworking in politics, and so even
in business, like you, havecertain kind of decorum that is
essential to being successful.
For the past 25 years, I haveworked in corporate America.
For those of you who listen, who work in corporate America.
(10:34):
It's a grind right.
You're always under deadlinesand pressures on behalf of a
corporate entity and it's toughbecause you don't control any of
that.
You don't see it.
You don't necessarily have theability to affect change or
decisions that come when you area leader.
(10:56):
And even though in my positionin corporate America, I was a
leader right, I was corporatetraining manager, so I had a lot
of responsibility for thedevelopment of employees but
still I'm not making thedecisions on how to go forward.
And I always wanted that.
I always wanted to be abusiness owner.
I always wanted to control myown time.
Once I got reelected, Irealized what my public
(11:18):
responsibilities was going to be.
I looked at what myprofessional responsibilities
were and I was like, hey, thesedon't match, these don't line up
public role, and I knew Icouldn't do that with someone
else controlling my time.
I made the decision to moveforward and started my company.
(11:40):
In March of 2023, I filed toincorporate my company, hma
Consulting Group LLC.
We are a premier learning group.
We believe in learning, leadership and change.
We help our clients manage allof those aspects of their
(12:03):
business, because you have tohave leadership in order to have
a successful business, yourpeople have to learn and grow
with new technology and trends, and you also have to manage
change.
In my education and corporatelife, I've gained the ability to
execute those aspects ofbusiness.
So I wanted to see if I coulddo it on my own.
Take that leap, step off andsee if I could fly and if I
(12:25):
plummet, you know if myabilities of flight had kicked
in.
So I wanted to see that and sowe started out and I can report
that things have gone reallywell in the first year.
So really, you know I don'teven count 2023, because that
was a planning year, right thatwas really laying the groundwork
, getting everything togetherpaperwork, marketing, building,
(12:49):
reaching out to clients.
We were incorporated in 2023,but we didn't start actually
business until 2024, in January.
So it's been a great month, 10and a half months, just really
excited about where the businessis going.
But it has taken up a lot oftime.
Normally, when I would berecording episodes, like I'm
(13:12):
doing right now, that's beenreplaced by making pitches to
companies, doing social media, advertising, marketing and
meeting the deadlines of myclients.
And so the funny, the joke isfor a lot of folks who are
business owners andentrepreneurs that the joke is
that I traded my nine to fivefor 24 seven, and that has been
(13:32):
super.
That has been extremely truebecause some mornings my alarm
goes off at 4.30 and my plan isto get up and go to the gym to
get started on my day, but as Iget up, something clicks in my
head oh man, you really need todo this.
Instead of going to the gym,I'm sitting in my office on my
computer working.
That starts that early.
(13:54):
It has been super joyful becauseto see something grow, to see
something build.
The growth over the firstcouple of years was outstanding.
We are gaining listeners andfollowers and seeing our YouTube
channel grow from 12 followersto now over 1,400, to watch our
(14:17):
TikTok grow from nothing to nowalmost 1,800 followers.
And I know you're saying well,1,800, that's nothing.
There are people with a billionfollowers yes, they are, but we
are very specific content.
We are very, very specific whenit comes to what we do.
We're not necessarily expectingus to be everyone's cup of tea
(14:37):
the fact that we have growth inthose areas and folks don't get
me wrong, there's a lot ofthings that I think we could be
doing to grow faster.
But with growth comes demand, and I just spent the last 20
plus minutes telling you aboutall the things going on in my
life.
Spent the last 20 plus minutestelling you about all the things
(14:57):
going on in my life and howimportant to prioritize that is.
I know that if we grow to10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 50,000,
or 10X of that followers orsubscribers or listeners then
the demand is going to be there, and so I know I don't want to
necessarily say that I don'twant to meet the demand of our
listeners, but I also want tosay that there's a balance that
(15:20):
I have to strike between theother phases of my life and you
guys are extremely, which is whyI'm coming here today
explaining to you guys whereI've been and what I've been
doing.
I hope you guys can find it inyour hearts to re-engage and
listen and what I've been doing.
I hope you guys can find it inyour hearts to re-engage and
listen.
Thank you for all the downloadsof the old episodes To look up
(15:42):
and still see that episodes arebeing listened to, downloaded
and folks are clicking on someof our old episodes.
Like I said, we haven't recordedsince August of last year and
that's been a joy to see, folksare still interested in what
we're doing here at SuperheroPolitics Podcast.
There are a lot of things thatare going on in the comic world,
and so I wanted to just comeout here briefly to say thank
