On this episode of Survive & Thrive 8791 Podcast, I welcome Dee Squire to the Buck & Honey's remote studios. Dee has lived a rewarding, full life—one filled with acceptance, advocacy, and a deep commitment to taking on any and all obstacles. Shortly after getting married 50 years ago and giving birth to her son, Brad, Dee began to notice that her body didn’t feel quite right and something was up. Just three months after her son’s birth, she received a life-changing diagnosis of Muscular Dystrophy.
A few years later with advancements in medical testing, Dee was officially diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD)—a genetic disorder that affects the muscles of the face, shoulder blades, and upper arms. Despite all this, Dee refused to let her diagnosis control her. For years, she has adapted and lived an active life.
By 2000, her prognosis progressed to where she needed a cane, then a walker, and eventually a wheelchair. Despite this new normal, Dee never lost her positive spirit. Her diagnosis has stabalized and she credits that to healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and—perhaps most importantly—advocating for herself.
Today, Dee continues to embrace life by controlling the things she can and accepting what happens inside her body. Her story will inspire anyone who is in a similar situation. Her purpose in retirement has been to her body so she can continue to live an active life. This will be a good one. CAN’T WAIT!!!
