Subscriber-only episode

We've all been deceived by people we trusted, but few have experienced it with potentially life-threatening consequences. This episode peels back the layers of seemingly innocent relationships to reveal a disturbing pattern of calculated manipulation and possible conspiracy.

After losing everything back home, I found myself in Cabo San Lucas, vulnerable and rebuilding from scratch. When an older American couple, Larry and Anita, appeared offering friendship and support, they seemed like guardian angels sent at exactly the right moment. Their generosity—opening their home, helping me find housing, introducing me to local connections—painted a picture of compassionate expats helping a fellow American through tough times.

The Fourth of July celebration started innocently enough. Drinks at local bars with plans to watch fireworks from Larry and Anita's condo overlooking the Arch. But strange decisions began accumulating: their unusual insistence I shouldn't drive despite similar previous situations, Larry providing Xanax despite knowing it causes blackouts with alcohol, and most tellingly, their failure to make even a single call when we never arrived at their home after supposedly following them there.

Waking up in a Mexican hospital with facial stitches and no memory of how I got there was terrifying enough. But the realization that followed was worse—people I thought were friends had likely orchestrated the entire "accident." As a former attorney who had made powerful enemies, I recognized the pattern too late. The truth becomes clear when you ask what genuine friends would do if you mysteriously disappeared on your way to their home. They would call. They would worry. They would create exactly the digital trail of concern that Larry and Anita carefully avoided.

Have you ever realized someone in your life wasn't who they claimed to be? How did you recognize the signs? Share your experiences or thoughts about navigating betrayal in the comments or reach out directly through our website.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everybody, I'm Heidi, and this is the Surviving
Changes Podcast.
So, anita and Larry, when Ifirst got to Cabo, I was by now
I had seen quite a pattern, nomatter where I had been.
As soon as I got there, it wasgoing to be clear I was down and

(00:22):
out because that's how I rolledin.
I was going to be clear I wasdown and out because that's how
I rolled in.
Um, I was going to work hard.
Uh, I mean, I, I'm the sameperson, no matter what situation
you put me in.
I'm going to respond how I haveto, clearly, um, and my
responses will be differentbased on the situation, but I,
what you see, is what you gethere, and so, um, I'm looking by

(00:48):
this point in time, I'mactually looking for these
people.
They all have the same quality.
They come to you, um, in a verygood position.
They all come to you, um, asgodly people, helpful people.
Uh, they all have the samecharacteristics about them.
They all come to you as godlypeople, helpful people.
They all have the samecharacteristics about them.

(01:14):
When they come into your liferight and out of nowhere,
they're there to help you.
You call them angels becausethey just came out of the blue.
You spend a lot of timetogether.
I mean there's there's a clearpattern as to uh, who.
They are right, even though I Imight not know exactly they're.

(01:37):
They're clearly Freemasons, um,and they're also clearly, uh,
you know some of the I'm goingto use the term deep state,
because deep state is the fusioncenter people.
But there's also just the localbar that I've pissed off, the
judges that I've made lookstupid right at some point, the

(01:58):
prosecutors I've made cry, thecops I've made pee themselves at
trial.
There's a whole host of days.
I recognize this.
I recognize this as I'm doingit.
I don't know how many timesthat I said to clients they're
like this isn't fair.
I'm like I know and I'm fullygoing to go through something
very unfair at some point in thefuture because I'm helping you.

(02:20):
I didn't know how unfair it wasgoing to be, and so that I
didn't know how unfair it wasgoing to be and so that I didn't
know I didn't know it was goingto be set up for all kinds of
stuff that I didn't know, but Ifully expected it.
But so, anyway, and I don'tfully trust Patty at this point,

(02:45):
the way that she's stuck aroundas quite the hero makes sense
and doesn't make sense.
There's lots of things she doesthat a person who cares would
do, and then there's other stuffthat she just lets go.
Here's an example she got awhole bunch of my memories from
someone else who couldn't storethem any longer and she just

(03:07):
left them out on her porch for along time, didn't even open it,
told me about it Then, when Iasked her to please send them to
me, she still hasn't, becauseshe found out that that
typewriter was in there, thetypewriter that I used when I
was trying to defend myself withthe Bar Association, that I
used when I was trying to defendmyself with the Bar Association
.
And so when I'm going into Cabo, I'm already very aware we're

(03:29):
on the west coast.
It's not that far to Seattle.
Patty's got me here the veryfirst people I meet, lo and
behold, they're the tow company.
Now, all of a sudden, I've gotother angels coming in.
Now I'm just killing time.
Uh, god's gonna protect me.
I know for a fact at this pointin time, god's going to protect

(03:52):
me and, um, he's gonna hurtthese people.
For if, if they don't have agood I know at this point in
time, if they don't have a goodintention, they very well could
end up in hell or some badthings happening to them, but
nothing worse is going to happento me.
I'm already at the worst part.
I just need to wait it outuntil it gets better.
But so we spend a lot of timetogether and there is this

(04:16):
bartender named Tricky.
Well, that we named Tricky andhe's a cartel member, and so I
get to know they party there alot.
I mean he will work and partyand he'd sell cocaine from
behind the bar.
You know stuff like that.
And so if I'm living there atCabo Jack's, obviously I get to

(04:37):
know Tricky quite a bit, andTricky would be one of our
servers when Anita and Larrywould come in, and they came in
just about every single day.
They don't have much to do,they're retired and that's.
They either go to the pool anddrink or they go into town to
drink.
That's their day.
It's just a matter of whereit's going to be.

(05:00):
So they came in a lot and thatmade everybody happy, happy.
Tricky was happy because hemade a lot of money on it.
Um, though they would, theywould buy so much fucking
alcohol, um and tricky, andthose guys apparently would
learn that they could go, larryand anita, and those guys would

(05:21):
pay it, and then they could tellum, well, I believe this is
what happened.
I think they got that moneyback from Charlie essentially I
don't know that, but so, anyway,it was a good deal for
everybody and it didn't hurt meat all.
But so now I've moved into theirhouse the condo in the spare

(05:42):
room, and now after that, um, meand Anita are both looking for
apartments, but I'm not lookinghard.
I can go back to Cabo Jack'sfor free, um, but she finds a
little place.
The place is out there, theAltamira Plus.
So we go look at it.
Um, it's a great place.
And they put the money down, weget the place.

(06:03):
Um, and I think these guys areangels.
At this point I cautiouslybelieve they're angels.
It's a very big help.
But so now, fast forward, it's4th of July and they're like
okay, hey, let's go into CaboJack's, let's get drunk, and

(06:28):
then we'll watch the fireworksat their place, because their
condo overlooks the arch and soyou can see all of the fireworks
from their house, and we canjust sit on the roof and finish
drinking and watch the fireworks, and it'll be great.
I can just spend the nightthere if I need to and call it
good.

(06:48):
And so we first went to CaboJack Jacks and Tricky was
actually bartending over at aplace, los Barillas at the time
and so we drank at Cabo Jacksfor a while.
Jenny probably served us hey, jenny, if you're listening.
Um, jenny doesn't know much.
Well, she might now muchEnglish and I didn't know her
Spanish, but we, we talked, wegot along pretty good.
I love Jenny, she's great.

(07:10):
I have nothing bad to say aboutJenny.
She's a sweet little girl.
She has a baby now, I guess.
Actually, I think the baby's acouple years old.
Okay, so anyway, and this ispart of the reason why.
So there's two reasons why Larryand Anita are suspect here.
So we go over to Los Perillosand we get really, really more

(07:37):
drunk over there as we'rewaiting for Tricky to get off of
his shift, because we alldecide together I think we're
all deciding together that he'sgoing to go with us.
And so after he gets off, anitacomes out, and it was weird,
because so at that los perillasplace there's no parking, and so

(07:57):
you just, um, when they take itup, you tell them hey, we're
here for a little while, givethem their keys, they'll drive
it up and then they'll bring youback your keys.
And then, when you're ready togo, you're like, okay, go get my
car, and they'll bring, comeback and get their car, and so
it's time to go.
And they brought the car back,um, and I clearly was too, too
drunk to drive.
I know that.
But, anita, I've been too drunkto drive lots of times and

(08:20):
anita had never, ever saidanything about it.
And on this particular time shesaid no, heidi, you're too
drunk to drive.
And she gave tricky my keys andsaid let Tricky drive.
I'm like, okay, fine.
And so we let Tricky drive andthey're following us, we're

(08:43):
supposed to be going out totheir house, but so I don't know
what happens Because, also, larry got me some Xanax, which
also was interesting.
So Anita would sometimes give mesome of hers, but on this
particular day, larry went outof the kindness of his heart and
got me a full bottle of Xanax, knowing that I black out when I
drink and take Xanax.

(09:03):
And so I don't know if Iblacked out because I got
slipped a Xanax, I don't know.
Or maybe I voluntarily took one, or I don't know if it blacked
out because I got slipped asannex.
I don't know, or maybe Ivoluntarily took one, or I don't
know if it was because of theaccident, but what I know is I
woke up in.
The last thing I remember ishanding my keys over.
You know that situationhappening in me, handing my keys

(09:24):
over to Tricky, tricky, andthen I woke up in a Mexican
hospital and hurting.
Those guys didn't speak Englishat all.
I was not cuffed to the bed, Iclearly had stitches in my face,

(09:45):
under my eye, but I couldn'tsee myself.
I couldn't see anything, and Iasked if I could leave.
I said can I go?
And they said no, and thatreally scared me.
And so as soon as everybodywent around the corner, I snuck
the hell out of there and umstarted walking home.
It was a long walk, uh and um,I didn't realize my face was

(10:07):
really fucked up.
I had stitches under my eye.
Really, really, I didn't lookgood at all.
And so I'm walking up to myplace and there's some guys
sitting on the side of the roadand I have $20 in my pocket and
I'm like, hey, $20 to drive me,and I'm doing it in my best
Spanish I can and they're tryingto understand, and so I give
them $20, and they drive methere and I'm doing it my best

(10:28):
spanish I can, and they'retrying to understand, and so I
give them 20 bucks and theydrive me home.
I have to break the window toget in because I don't have my
keys, um, I don't have myvehicle.
I don't know, even I don't.
I don't know what's happened atthat point, uh.
But so I get in my house, cutmyself getting in, feed Pellucci

(10:50):
, um, look in the mirror and see, oh my God, my face is really
fucked up, um, and I call Larryand Anita and ask what's up and
they're like oh my God, whathappened?
We heard you got in a wreck.
I'm like well, so what do youknow?
Because I don't know anything,because I don't know anything.
And so they proceeded to tell methat we were leaving Los Berlos

(11:11):
and they were behind us goingout to their house, and then
Tricky pulled over and they keptdriving and they just went out
to the house, and then we nevershowed up, and then they hadn't
heard anything from me sinceuntil right then.
I'm like what the fuck?
What do you mean from me since?
Until right then?
And I'm like, what the fuck?

(11:33):
What do you mean?
Um, and so Larry has friends, you know, at the friends of
friends at the cop shop.
All of those guys do, charliedoes and so they proceed to tell
me in pieces, little pieces, oh, to piece the story together
that, um, what had happened wasapparently Tricky had hit
another guy who also had beendrinking head on and this was

(11:55):
the story I was told and that wewent in and hit the wall and
the other guy hit another car,and that they picked me up in an
ambulance and that both ofthose guys ran from the scene,
and that they picked me up inthe ambulance and that I was
being charged with a hit and run, even though they picked me up
in the passenger seat, and so Iwas really hurting.

(12:19):
So Larry went and negotiatedall this with the cops for me,
supposedly, charged me 10,000pesos that I could work with him
to get back, charged me 10,000pesos that I could work with him
to give back.
But they helped take care of me, right.
But here's the thing.

(12:39):
Here's the thing.
It doesn't make sense.
And now I didn't catch Larry andAnita in the middle of anything
.
I tried with that.
I tried with that little radioearpiece listening to Amy and
then using the other one tolisten to them talk.
But the problem was they havetwo stories the way that their

(13:00):
condo is, it just wasn'tphysically possible, I couldn't
get a good signal.
And the way that they interact,it was somebody in the house.
It just wasn't possible.
So I didn't get anythingdirectly as far as that goes.
But here's where common sensejust comes in, and they didn't

(13:20):
ever have a good explanation forme.
I kind of asked them about it,but but not too much.
Not too much Because it's whenI knew that they weren't my
friends.
They were compromised from thebeginning helping me, helping me
, helping me.
So we were supposed to be outthere at their house.
We had just had a great time intown.

(13:43):
Larry and Nita, tricky and meAll four of us were supposed to
go to their house, get drunk, watch the fireworks.
Me and Tricky are followingthem.
Then we pull over to the sideof the road, supposedly, and
they drive on by and go home.
Then they don't hear anythingfrom us either of us, supposedly

(14:04):
.
Not once did they try calling, not one time.
There was not one missed call.
I did have my phone and therewas not one missed call on my
phone from larry or anita saying, hey, why didn't you show up?
And the only thing I can figureis because that head-on
collision was supposed to hurtme real good, um, and he left me

(14:25):
in the the um bleeding out ofmy face, passed out.
I don't know if that wreck wassupposed to kill me, I don't
know, but I do know that anybodythat's a friend that believes
that you're following them andyou're going to be at their
house for Fourth of July reallysoon, would make at least one

(14:46):
phone call when you didn't showup to say, hey, where are you?
Are you okay?
What happened?
But they didn't.
And the only thing I could tellyou is the reason that they
didn't do that is because theyknew I wasn't okay.
Right, the problem is with someof these deals is they might be

(15:08):
getting paid to hurt me throughthe Fusion Center, the Masons,
all of those guys, that money, essentially, and we'll find out
with them exactly.
With each ones we'll figure out.
We'll get to see how they were.
We know they were involved, butlike in which exact section and

(15:29):
how?
Who gave them their check?
Um, but I can only figure thatum, they came in from the very
beginning.
That thing was a setup from thevery beginning.
Now we'll find out.
And there's one more thing thathappens with larry here later.
But I, I like larry.
Here's the problem.

(15:50):
Um, I had fun with these guys.
Me and larry would go drinking.
We'd go.
What we'd tell?
We tell anita we were watchingflags to see how the fishing was
, the fishing flags, but reallywe were watching boobies.
The only flags we watched wereboobies.
We'd go into town and just getsmashed and watch girls walk by
all day and so and larry endedup being going on the helicopter

(16:14):
ride with me.
Larry went um on a bunch oflike the razors and things like
that.
Um, we did a lot of the sunsettours together.
So I had a lot of fun withthese guys and it's rough to
think that they're part of itlike that.
But here's one thing I can tellyou uh, in everything that I
know, um, if they were myfriends and they cared about me

(16:38):
and they didn't know that wasgoing to happen, they would have
made at least one phone call tosee how I was.
The fact that they didn't makeeven one phone call to see how I
was meant that they didn't wantany sort of phone trail.
They wanted no phone trail.
So when someone came and lookedlater, there would be no
evidence at all that they triedcalling me at all.

(16:59):
There would be nothing directlyrelated.
So you can't, you can't tell methat there's a reasonable
explanation for not calling andchecking on me.
So Larry and Anita compromised, but that made it really easy.
Now I didn't call them on thatI still have to this day.
I can call them up and act likenothing's happened and they,
well, once they hear this, they'll know that I know, but,

(17:28):
like I can, I still haven'tconfronted any of those guys.
And, um, what this does now atthis point in time with Larry
and Anita, I'm very aware thereis, this group is in Cabo and
they, they might not have goodintentions for me, go figure.
So, all right, the van istotaled.
Um, I have that apartment.

(17:50):
I have ran from the hospitalmexican hospital I've got six to
eight stitches in my face, um,and I'm trying to figure out how
to start a tour business.
So I've got a couple thingsgoing on.
Let me tell you what happensnext.
I'm Heidi and this is theSurviving Changes podcast.

(18:12):
Thanks for sticking with me.
