Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome back to Sword and Scale Daily, a
daily show covering all things true crime, five days a week.
It's Friday, March fourteenth. I'm your host, Ryan Williams. In Nevada,
a woman was arrested after allegedly trying to have her
TV star husband murdered. In Pennsylvania, a man has been

(00:24):
charged with felony criminal homicide after his wife was found
with her throat slit. And in Texas, a man is
charged with capital murder for the death of his living girlfriend.
All of this coming at you right now here on
Sword and Scale Daily. All right, So, earlier this week,

(00:52):
news broke about the foiled assassination attempt of a well
known TV personality star. This story actually happened to coincide
with an episode that was covered on Sword and Scale
back in twenty twenty. Now. Last Thursday, March sixth, detectives
with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrested thirty two
year old at Victoria Goodwin. Victoria is the wife of

(01:15):
Aaron Goodwin, a staple of the show Ghost Adventures. The
charges Victoria currently faces our solicitation to commit murder and
conspiracy to commit murder. She was booked into the Clark
County Detention Center on a one hundred thousand dollars bond.
Typically we reserve that information until the end of our stories,
but it's important that we spend time talking about the
investigation that led to Victoria's arrest. The investigation into Victoria's

(01:40):
started back in October twenty twenty four. That's when corrections
officers at Okachobe Correctional Institution in Florida seized the cell
phone from an inmate during a search. The inmate with
the cell phone just so happened to be Grant to Motto,
the subject who was covered on Sword and Scale episode
one seventy four. If we recall, Grant was convicted of
the murders of his mother, father, and brother after sending

(02:02):
large sums of money to a webcam model from Europe.
It seems that when the cell phone was taken from Grant,
text messages as well as Facebook messages showed that both
Victoria and this convicted killer were discussing ways in which
she could have Aaron killed. A further investigation revealed that
Victoria had been the one to reach out and connect
with Grant, but as their conversations continued, Victoria started asking

(02:25):
Grant if he knew anyone who could help her with
her problem. Her problem was her husband. Grant explained that
he had someone on the outside who could be of assistance,
but the cost would be eleven five hundred and fifteen
dollars with a down payment of twenty five hundred dollars.
Their plan was to have this quote unquote hitman target
Aaron while he was in California filming for Ghost Adventures.

(02:48):
At some point, Grant texted the so called hitman and stated, quote,
he's asleep in his hotel room right now. I need
to know what's going on. Can I get an update?
Was it Donestigators also found the following text exchange between
Victoria and Grant. She texted, quote, am I a bad person?

(03:08):
Grant replied quote, why do you think you're a bad person?
Victoria stated quote because I chose to end his existence,
not a divorce. Fortunately, the plan was shut down before
anything could actually happen to Aarin. After Victoria's rest last week,
investigators sat down to confront her with the evidence. At first,
Victoria denied the allegations, but after some time in the

(03:30):
interrogation room, she broke down and spit out a version
of her truth. Victoria told investigators that she had initially
written to Grant after seeing a true crime documentary that
covered his case. The more that the two conversed, the
more she had become connected to Grant. She admitted to
investigators that she looked to be romantically involved with Grant,
but didn't want it to come at the cost of

(03:52):
having her husband killed. Unfortunately for Victoria, investigators had all
the evidence they needed. After her arrest went public. TMZ
spoke with Aaron about his wife's arrest. He stated that
he's been blindsided by this news and has been left devastated.
It seems that the couple has only been married for
three years. Zach Begins, the host of Ghost Adventures, also

(04:14):
spoke with TMZ and said their primary focus right now
is supporting and loving on their beloved co star. If
new details are made available in this case, we'll be
sure to bring you an update. On Tuesday, March eleventh,

(04:36):
at around eight thirty am, officers with the Bethlehem Township
Police Department in Pennsylvania were dispatched to a home on
the twenty one hundred block of Third Street for a
request in welfare check. According to the reporting party, there
were some concerns for the residents of the home. One
of the residents, in particular, Deborah Glazer, hadn't shown up
for work for several days. When officers arrived on the scene,

(04:59):
they tried to atta alish contact with residents, but received
no response. As they were trying to make entry into
the home, one of the residents, later identified as fifty
seven year old James Frank, exited the home and told
officers that his wife was deceased in the bathroom. James
led officers to the bathroom, where they discovered a gruesome scene.

(05:19):
Deborah appeared to have suffered multiple stab wounds and her
neck appeared to have been slit. According to James, he
was the person responsible for Deborah's death, allegedly admitting that
he used a steak knife to cut his wife's throat.
He also allegedly claimed that he then proceeded to stab
Deborah in the chest roughly ten times before he grabbed
a hammer to smash the knife into her chest to

(05:41):
make sure that she died. James was arrested on a
charge a felony criminal homicide. After his arrest, Northampton County
District attorney Stephen Barrada, spoke with local news station WFMZ
and stated, quote, he admitted to having sliced her neck open.
It was a pretty grooseme injury. We can't confirm how
long she had been dead, but it was pretty clear

(06:03):
that it was many hours prior to the police response.
It was gruesome and on a very human level, upsetting,
especially given the fact that it's a domestic situation. The
same day that James was arrested, he appeared before a
judge and was formally arraigned on the felony criminal homicide charge.
He was ordered to be held in the Northampton County
Prison without bond. He's due back in court on Tuesday,

(06:26):
March twenty fifth for a preliminary hearing. Will continue following
this story and bring you an update when and if
more details become available. On Monday, March tenth, at around
three pm, the Fort Worth Police Department in Texas received

(06:48):
a call from an individual who was requesting a welfare check.
According to the reporting party, they recently spoken with her friend,
thirty year old Dylan Jones, who reportedly told this individual
that he believed he quote unquote blacked out and thought
something bad happened. Unfortunately, the reporting party wasn't quite sure
what something bad might have been. Officers were then dispatched

(07:11):
to an apartment complex where Dylan reportedly lived on Ipswich
Road near two eighty one. Upon arrival, they attempted to
make contact with Dylan, but received no response. At that time,
officers were advised to clear from the scene, but just
three hours later, at around six pm, the Fort Worth
Police Department once again received a call from someone regarding

(07:32):
Dylan Jones. This time, the caller was requesting the police
to their residence after Dylan showed up and allegedly made
some damning confessions. According to this reporting party, Dylan showed
up at their house in absolute crying mess. In between
outbursts of crying, Dylan was reported to have started making
comments about how he killed his roommate. The reporting party

(07:53):
also stated that they observed what looked like dried blood
on and under Dylan's fingernails. Officers were then dispatch to
the reporting party's home on Stockton Drive, only to discover
that Dylan had left the residence shortly before their arrival. Luckily,
the reporting party was able to provide the officers with
a good description of the vehicle that Dylan was driving.

(08:14):
Less than an hour after officers responded to the home
on Stockton Drive, other officers had located the vehicle and
attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but that's when the
vehicle sped away, leading officers on a high speed pursuit.
A later released report states that Dylan allegedly blew through
multiple stoplights and was bobbing and weaving through traffic. It
was also reported that at times Dylan was driving on

(08:36):
the wrong side of the road at around ninety miles
per hour. Thirty eight minutes after the pursuit started, it
came to an end. Dylan attempted to flee on foot,
but was hit with a taser and then taken into custody.
At the time of his detainment, a Smith and Wesson
three eighty caliber handgun was found on his person. Now
all the while this pursuit of Dylan was taking place,

(08:58):
other officers traveled back to his apartment on Ipswich Road
and forced entry into his residence. As they started clearing
the home, they came upon the body of a woman
inside the main bathroom. The woman appeared to be deceased
from a gunshot wound shell casings found next to her
body indicated that a three eighty caliber handgun was used
in the shooting. The victim was later identified as twenty

(09:20):
eight year old Ariel Levy. After speaking with the victim's family,
officers learned that Ariel was Dylan's girlfriend and roommate. As
it stands, Dylan Jones has been charged with capital murder
and evading arrest. He's since been booked into the Fort
Worth Jail and no bond has been set at this time.
We'll continue keeping an eye on this story and bring

(09:41):
you an update if there are any new developments. Thanks
so much for tuning in this week for Sword and
Scale Daily. Now I'm your host, Ryan Williams, and we'll
see you back here next week.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
