Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome back to Sword and Scale Daily, a
daily show covering all things true crime, five days a week.
It's Thursday, March twentieth. I'm your host, Ryan Williams. In Iowa,
a man called nine one one and reported that he
killed his wife. He later confessed that he did so

(00:21):
out of mercy. In Massachusetts, a teenager's been charged with
the murder of his brother. Over the weekend. In Washington,
police were called to a home for a possible drug overdose.
Days later, investigators received a call from a man claiming
to be responsible for the victim's death. And in Florida,
a man was arrested for manslaughter after allegedly driving under

(00:44):
the influence and striking a man in the roadway. All
of this coming at you right now here on Sword
and Scale Daily. On Sunday, March ninth, at around eight
forty two pm, police and Perry, Iowa, responded to a
home on the twenty six hundred block of Lucinda Street

(01:06):
after a man called nine one one and stated that
he had killed his wife. When responding officers arrived on
the scene, they encountered seventy five year old Richard Hosing,
who had blood on his hands and on his clothing.
He was detained and placed in a patrol car while
officers went inside the home. As officers started clearing the
house looking for potential threats, they discovered a woman dead

(01:26):
in a bedroom within the home. It appeared that the
woman had sustained a significant wound to her throat, and
as such, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The
victim was later identified as Gene Hoasting, Richard's wife. A
bloody knife was also located within the home and believed
to be the murder weapon used in the victim's death,
and a later released criminal complaint, it was learned that

(01:47):
Richard had spoken with officers at the scene regarding Jane's death.
It alleges that Richard confessed that he had killed his
wife in order to quote unquote put her out of
her misery. According to Richard, Jean had suffered from a
litany medical conditions, but the most significant health issues she
faced were bipolar disorder and multiple sclerosis. He went on
to state that Jeane had suffered from these conditions for

(02:09):
years and truly believed that he was helping her. Unfortunately,
for Richard, that's not how the law works. He was
arrested and has since been charged with first degree murder.
Richard was booked into the Dallas County Jail, where he
remains held without bond. He's due in court on Thursday,
March twenty seventh for preliminary hearing. If more details are

(02:30):
released on the case at that time, we'll be sure
to bring you an update. On the afternoon of Saturday,
March fifteenth, officers in Fall River, Massachusetts responded to a
home on the nine hundred block of Rodman Street for
reported shooting. When respawning officers and ems arrived on the scene,

(02:50):
they found a young man inside the residence suffering from
a gunshot wound to the chest. He was quickly transported
from the scene to Saint Anne's Hospital, where tragically he
died shortly after our The victim was later identified as
twenty year old Jelael Simmons. As officers were working the scene,
they spoke with a woman at the residence who stated
that her son and the victim had gotten into a

(03:11):
pretty heated physical altercation in the home. It had been
so severe that she actually tried to put herself between
the two young men in an effort to stop the fight.
The woman told officers that after a few moments, her son,
seventeen year old Jalen Lambert, left the victim's room for
roughly thirty seconds. That's when he returned with what's only
been described as a firearm with an extended magazine. Once

(03:33):
that happened, the altercation once again resumed. During the fight,
a gunshot was fired, which struck Jelail in the chest.
When officers spoke with Jalen, it was reported that he
made multiple admissions to his involvement in the shooting that
took the life of his brother Jelail. Ultimately, Jalen was
arrested and has since been charged with murder, possession of
a large capacity firearm, and possession of a firearm without

(03:56):
an FID card. He was formally arraigned on the charges
then past Monday, at which time it was announced that
Jalen is being charged as an adult in the case.
Family members gathered during the hearing and support of Jalen,
many of which shouted quote, we love you and that's
all right Jalen. After the arraignment hearing, Jalen's attorney, Frank Camera,

(04:17):
spoke with the media and had the following to say, quote,
it's an extremely tragic event. I feel terrible for the
family and friends of this situation. This is a case
where the Commonwealth has overcharged. This to me is a
manslaughter case. Mister Cameron also went on to explain that
they're looking into the investigation, further claiming that witnesses have
come forward and stated that both Jalen and Julael wouldn't

(04:40):
frequently argue and fight with one another, brotherly love and
all that. He's also gone on to request that investigators
from the Massachusetts State Police, as well as the Fall
River Police and Homicide Unit start to take handwritten notes
as the state continues its investigation. Jalen Lambert was ordered
to remain in custody without bond. He's due back in
court on April twenty fifth for a problem cause hearing.

(05:01):
We'll like we learn more about the case at that
time when and if more details are released, will be
sure to bring you an update. On Wednesday, March twelfth,
officers with the Moses Lake Police Department in Washington were
called to a residence on Marina Drive after receiving reports

(05:22):
about a possible deceased individual at the home. When responding
officers an ems arrived on the scene, They made their
way inside the house and located the individual who was
confirmed to be deceased. The man was later identified as
sixty one year old Kurt Olkardson. The initial indication seemed
to appear as though Kurt died as a result of
an accidental overdose, but investigators who took over the case

(05:45):
wanted to take a closer look into the man's death
before making a final ruling. And then, on Tuesday, March eighteenth,
investigators received some, let's say, concerning information about Kurt's death,
and that started to cast some doubt on the possibility
of an accidental overdose. It just so happened that on
Tuesday night, at around nine thirty pm, they received a
call from Kurt's roommate, thirty four year old Kyler Wortham.

(06:08):
You see, Kyler wanted investigators to know that he was
the person responsible for Kurt's death. Now, it's not exactly
known what information Kyler provided that would end up matching
what information investigators had, but it was enough to arrest
him in connection with the now alledged murder. Kyler Wortham
has since been charged with murder and was booked into
the Grant County Jail. His bond status isn't known at

(06:30):
the time of this writing. We are continuing to follow
this story closely as the investigation continues, and will bring
you an update when new information is released. At around
seven forty pm on Monday, March seventeenth, deputies with the
Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida responded to the area

(06:50):
of Van Fleet Drive after receiving reports of a vehicle
versus pedestrian accident. When deputies arrive on the scene, they
found an older gentleman lying in the middle of the
road on repets of Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly
thereafter and attempted to perform life saving efforts, but unfortunately,
the man was pronounced dead. He was later identified as

(07:10):
sixty nine year old Dan Cooley, a retired sergeant with
the Polk County Sheriff's Office. While waiting for detectives in
the corner to arrive on the scene, deputy spoke with
witnesses who observed this accident taking place. Deputies learned that
shortly before the crash occurred, a storage tote had flown
out of the vehicle that Dan was driving, so he
pulled over, turned on his hazard lights and then went

(07:33):
out to retrieve the tote and the items that had
come out of the tote into the roadway. But as
Dan was quickly getting those items, a Jaguar S type
moved into the middle lane where Dan was, effectively striking
him and throwing him back onto the roadway. Fortunately, the
driver remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived. The
driver identified himself as fifty year old Aaron Wells, and

(07:54):
right away, deputies who were speaking with Aarin picked up
on the smell of booze on his breath. During the conversation,
Aerin was noted to have watery eyes and was kind
of slurring his speech. Even more concerning was the fact that,
if Erin was truly intoxicated, he was driving with an
eleven year old child in his car, and based on
the belief that Aarin had been drinking, he was transported

(08:17):
to the Polk County Sheriff's Processing Center to provide a
breath analysis. Deputies later noted that Erin attempted to manipulate
the test by not providing enough air to get an
ample reading. Eventually, when he did the test correctly, the
results came back as point one oh five. The legal
limit in Florida is point zero eight. It was also
reported that Erin allegedly stated that he had consumed several

(08:40):
beers before getting into the car. Ultimately, Aaron Wells was
arrested in charge with manslaughter while driving under the influence
and negligent child abuse. He was booked into the Polk
County Jail, where he remains at the time of this writing.
During a press conference after the arrest, Polk County Sheriff
Grady Judd stated the following quote. Sergeant Dan Cooley was

(09:01):
a public servant for over twenty years. He had been
enjoying retirement for nearly as long when he was tragically
and senselessly struck and killed by an impaired motorist. The
driver clearly has no regard for human life, not only
choosing to get behind the wheel drunk, but doing so
with a child in the car. Our prayers are with
Dan Cooley's family and loved ones. Thanks so much for

(09:23):
