Speaker 1 (00:00):
I need ten or fifteen skirts from Calvin Kleive. Sometimes
they would buy big instead of dinner. I just felt
it said anymore. This is Taylor Talk with your host
Sammy Rose.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Handmade clothes are becoming more and more popular and later
on this month in Canberra is the Handmade Markets at
Exhibition Park, a very very popular event with Camberons and
people across the region joining me on the podcast today
to talk all things handmade fashion. Is the wonderful founder
Julie Nichols. Welcome to the podcast.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Julie, thanks for having me Sammy.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Now you and your team, you're super busy. You're gearing
up for the next handmade markets. Why is it so
important that people support small businesses who produce these beautiful
handmade fashion pieces.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Well, it's always important, but I guess never more so
than right now. There's a few different reasons. The main one,
I guess is the economic benefit for everybody. You know,
if people can get out there and support small business,
than that's creating jobs and they're staying in business, and
it is just helping the economic flow overall. Of course,
(01:08):
there's always the environmental benefit as well, so that's a
lot of people that aren't importing things in there's no mileage,
they're not creating as much, so everything's quite unique. But
it also means that you're you know, it has a
great environmental flow on as well. But also it's preserving
(01:30):
those skills that sometimes we can lose over the generations.
So if we have more people that are staying with
those skill sets and teaching them passing them on, then
we're keeping that as well. So I think that's a
really important benefit. Also.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Now, speaking of benefits, duly, what would you say the
benefits though? If I were to buy a handmade fashion
piece you mentioned uniqueness there, would you say that that's
one of the many benefits?
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Definitely? I think I think some of the great benefits
of you buying a handmade pieces that it's always going
to be unique. It's not as if you're going to
walk down the street and past seven people wearing the
same things. So yeah, that uniqueness, but the quality as well,
So the quality far out weighs the real mass produced
(02:21):
items that you can buy. Yes, you might pay a
bit more for it, but it will outlast anything that
you will buy in the stores as well. Again, that
benefit is supporting small business, you know, keeping them in
business as well, which means you can always get your
high quality, unique custom made. You can have something made
specifically for you. You know that you just can't beat
(02:45):
the benefits of buying from a small business, especially in
getting something made in fashion exactly for you.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Now, you guys are going to have plenty of small
businesses on site at the handmade markets at the end
of these months. But what are some of the fashion
and accessory you guys we'll have on off of this time.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, we actually have lots this time, so great spring
fashion coming up as well. But you can get everything
from you know, the fantastic Spunky Bruiser who you know,
theirs is quite quirky. There are no waste business so
everything is made from repurposed recycled goods. But you know,
(03:24):
really popular with all age groups, pants, jackets, dresses, skirts,
really comfortable, so they're always very very popular. We've got
the lovely people from Honeyfox Hats, so they make your
feltered hats. They do demonstrations on site. The quality is amazing.
(03:46):
These all the hats that will just last you for
a lifetime. And you know they're all custom They can
be custom made for you she has them in lots
of sizes. They're ready made as well, but the quality
is just amazing. We have lovely fashions from Chalk and Cheese,
so they have amazing really again, really comfortable clothes, really
(04:10):
lovely to wear out of, fabulous linens. Their fabrics are
next level, but those real earthy tones that are very
popular at the moment, so comfortable, where look great, will
wear for a lifetime, so they're always very popular. And
one of the really quirky ones that we love is Dude.
So Dude's from Melbourne and he is for male and
(04:34):
female fashions, so it can be for either. Very cutting edge,
always have something new. The fabrics are just amazing. The
fabrics that he puts together you just never would think of,
but it works so well, very very melbournesque. I suppose
suits camera well you can layer really well with his
(04:57):
a lot of his fashions as well, so yeah, we
always love having dued there as well. Lots of earrings,
you can navi get too many earrings, scarms. Yeah, just
a little bit of something for everybody, for male and
female as well, little kids. Lots of kids fashion as well,
and again you can fit into all of those things
(05:18):
that we've just talked about as well. You know, kids
fashion generally you can buy it for the first child,
but then pass it on to the second child and
a third child and across the generations as well.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, now you've rid it off heaps of beautiful small
businesses there. If people you know want to check them
all out, You've got them all listed on your website,
don't you.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
We do, yes, So if they go to the website
and then under markets, we've got the specific market date
and then everybody's listed there. So you can just go
through everybody, or you can choose a different category, or
you can do a search for somebody as.

very nice collection of earrings, so I'm always on the
lookout for there. But I also love I have a

or you can wear it when you're going out. Did
you go over and ask black dress. It's just the
perfect color, nice and lightweight and you can just roll
it up and take it with you when you're traveling.
It just wears so well. It's beautiful.
