Speaker 1 (00:00):
I need ten or fifteen skirts from Calvin Klein. Sometimes
I would buy Bogue instead of dinner.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
I just felt it said more. This is Taylor Talk
with your host Sammy Rose. Skincare is so interesting and
if you're a bit of a skincare junkie like me,
you are going to absolutely love our guest today, Doctor
When Shansung is the medical director and cosmetic physician at
the Art Clinic here in Canberra, a modern, integrative medical

(00:26):
clinic that offers many personalized treatments for skin, baricose veins,
hair loss for both men and women, and also plenty
of women's health concerns. However, because we only tackle one
topic at a time, today, Doctor Wen is going to
talk us through how they make custom serums. Yes I
said that right, Custom serums a skincare dream and they

(00:49):
make them on site at the Art Clinic, and how
they are tailored to suit your personal skincare concerns like
fine light and sun damage and so much more. Welcome
to the podcast, Doctor When, Well.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Thank you so much. Sami. How are you doing today? Hi?

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Well, thank you? How are you going?

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Oh? Very good, very good. I'm so honored to be
on your show and hopefully today I can share some
of my experiences of this customer seriance for the skincare products.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yes, thank you, I'm excited to have you. So when
someone comes to the art clinic to see you for
a skin consultation, how does it work? Taught me through
the basics.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
So normally our standard skin consultation involves a detailed assessment
of patients skin and to review their skin history as well.
So normally we'll get patient to complete a quite comprehensive
questionnaire so it details about their skincare routines and their
past metal histories. And after that we'll go through with
the visa skin which is quite a high resolution camera

(01:48):
and we very often use this high resolution camera to
provide very detail assessment of a patient skin because it
actually allows us to see patients skin in different layers,
so it can be a too ours in terms of
the distribution of pigmentations, is any active areas of inflammation,
So very often we integrate busy on skins as a

(02:09):
part of us skin consultations.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, it's pretty amazing machine. You've done it for me
as well, And would you say some of the images
I found were quite confronting, like in terms of like,
it's pretty amazing.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
It is. It can be confronting at times because it's
machines reveal a lot more detail than our human neked eyes.
So a lot of times, a lot of pigmentations that
actually sitting deep into the dermos sometimes we can't really
see it. But with the machines because they can penetrate
a little bit deeper, so they actually do reveal a
little bit confronting details. But it's good things because it's

(02:45):
something that can be revealed. Then it's something we can
target our treatments to actually reduce pigmentations of redness. So
it's it. It gives us information more than we need
and hence it gives us a more holiy picture for
your skin.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, so say, if I can to you, I know
when I sat down with you at the clinic, I
mentioned that I was a bit worried about sundamage and pigmentation.
So you can actually pinpoint the exact areas that are
affected by those issues on my skin. That's right, that's amazing.
It's so cool. So now you gather all this information,

(03:19):
as you said that just sitting down talking to your
patient or your client and then obviously with the Visium
machine which gives you those very graphic, in depth images,
you gather all of this to create a customized serum.
How talk me through this? How do you decide what
to use? How does it work? Like I've seen you

(03:40):
do this in person and I was just my mind
was boggled.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, yes, yeah, So basically, we very often use a
VCR to give us more detailed pictures of skins. As
you know, our skin conditions are constantly changes, probably the
most dynamic organs in our body systems. So that's why
sometimes when we see a skin condition at the point
of times, we telling us a story about their health conditions.

(04:09):
So sometimes that with what the patients often use with
their skin care products, it may be not suitable for
particular skin of our particular times of the you know,
the months present, particular times of seasons, particularly for example,
in water times, patients can have very dry and very
sensitive skins and very often the product they use probably

(04:30):
suitable for summer use. So very often we use the
visit skin to capture their skin condition at the time
and they give us a little bit more holystic information
in terms of what are the active conditions their skin
going through and based on what we see, we AC
should be able to formulate quite targeted treatments or probably
says more corrective treatments rather than maintenance treatments for the

(04:53):
skin conditions. So that's why we focus very heavily on
corrective treatment of the skins at the present times.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yes, so as a cosmetic physician, obviously you deal I've
seen at the ar clinic before you mix these serums
up on site. You guys have a bunch of ingredients.
It's a whole box of them. Yes, what are some
of the ones that your favorite ingredients or ones that
you use more regularly for your clients.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Okay, So my favorite ingredient or probably say will be
vitamin B nice cineamais because it is such as or
public says, a sweecheese knife, so a Swiss army knife. Sorry,
because it's such as a multifunctional ingredient that helps you
to potentially reduce inflammations for vi hydrations. It is also

(05:41):
a powerful antioxidants. So it is a very common ingredient
that we see in most of the over the counter
cosmoceutical as well. So this is my goal to ingredients
and it's one of my essential ingredients in terms of
compounding that active serance for patients to take home.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, okay, what about have you got? So maybe a
second favorite that you like to you use a bit
more regularly as well.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
I think second favorite will be a retinal which is
commonly known as vitamin A. So this is also quite
a powerful ingredient that's actually helped the patient to reduce
signs for agents because not only that, they can also
reduce the pigment formations. So it is also a very
multifunctional active ingredients and that very often it can be

(06:26):
compounded or combined with vitamin bs. So very often we
note the skincare routines usually ABC, so A will be
a vitimin A that's quite suitable use at nights. B
is the vit night cinemaie SO which can be used
twice day. And C is a very powerful antioxygant ingredient
that's commonly used in the daytime. So this is usually

(06:48):
my go to ingredients, the vitamin A, vitamin B and
vitamin C.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Oh gosh, yes, they sound like wonderful ingredients. One that
I've spoken to me yourself about. So when you mix
this serum, there is no right time. I've seen it
in person. It's very impressive. So you guys, you just
mix it up right there on site so a client
can take it home straight away, can't they.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
That's right. So it's basically just a more uh you know,
in clinic freshly compounded active serial ingredient style based on
what we see from the visa skins. So we actually
provide some targeted treatments and very often I tell patients
that this you know formula is for particular skin conditions,
so it is not a maintenance treatments where it's you know,

(07:33):
for patients to take on for daily use, but whereas
it's more for a corrective treatments. For example, if they
do have a lot of active informations, I tend to
provide you know, a special ingredient and to reduce a
lot of skin informations. And usually this ingredient can last
probably between one to two months, and then very often
I bring passion back to review after that to see

(07:56):
how they responding to the treatments. And as you know,
the skin condition consonant changes and sometimes so we have
to always read just our formula according to the skin conditions.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Oh okay, so you can if a client comes back
to you, you know, a follow up appointment and maybe
the serum isn't working for them, you can adjust it.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yes, that's right. So the beauty is that the formula
is always changes. For example, some pasion may notice their
skin can get a bit more sensitivity if they are
the active ingredient contains viting a retinal. In that case,
sometimes a well replace the retinal with other different ingredients
where it's been more soothings and less irritating for the

(08:36):
patient's skin conditions.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yes, now, doctor, when I'm asking this one on the fly,
have you got I guess, in your memory bank of
some of the patients that you've had. Have you got
any really great success stories of a client that maybe
has come to you with a specific skin concern. Obviously
you know you don't need to say their name, but like,
what are some kind of some stories that have proven
how successful these customized serums are.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah, so now common sometimes as a part of the
skin consultation, very often I'll talk about the patient's skincare routines.
So it's very common. Some people they mentioned to me
that they've been using different kind of skincare products of
the times and they very often find, you know, the
product that not really provides a lot of the improvement

(09:21):
they are seeking. For example, a lot of patients may
have a lot of redness and they try different brands
of the products as see different company, different brands of
the shelf, and sometimes they get intermittent results but not
consistent results. Hence they're always changing that ingredients as they
try to find the perfect formula. And when I'm able

(09:42):
to review, so review their skins through the visa, so
it reviews. You know, the patients may have underlining for
example roseicia, which means that that require specific treatments not
only the topical but as well as ourals. So sometimes
based on why I find with the history and comminations,
so sometimes I do prescribe topical compounded scream as w

(10:05):
as in combination of aio therapy. So a lot of
times essentially it requires a combination trument approach to help
patients to improve. And I do see a lot of patients,
you know, improve significantly with the more specific targeted topical
treatments and assio therapy.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Oh okay, well, doctor Wen, it is always a pleasure
talking to you, and I will see you at the
arclinic myself very very soon. Thank you so much for
your time today and explaining these amazing custom serums at
the Arclinic to us, not the problems.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Thank you so much for your time simming. Always glad
to test to you
