In this tragic but captivating episode Barry-John speaks with Huwe Burton from the Bronx in New York.
On January 3rd, 1989 when Huwe was just 16 years of age, he came home from school to find that his mother had been brutally murdered. After calling the police Huwe was catapulted from being a grieving son to being the prime suspect.
He was then sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for which he served 20 years. Huwe was completely innocent of the crime.
During this fascinating conversation Huwe discusses the despicable techniques used by the interrogating officers to coerce a confession out of him as well as serving time with hardened career criminals, murderers and rapists while trying to maintain his sanity in the knowledge that he was an innocent man.
Huwe never gave up and always maintained his innocence but struggled to get people to believe him with the exception of his beloved father who offered unwavering support for his son throughout his battle for justice.
Huwe kept campaigning and writing to organisations protesting his innocence and finally the innocence project offered him a new lease of life by believing in him.
In 2009 Huwe was released on parole and alongside The Innocence Project kept campaigning to be exonerated which he eventually was in January 2019.
