Hidtil har man troet, at lattergas fordampede fra organismen i løbet af få minutter, men ny forskning fra Institut for Retsmedicin viser, at det faktisk er muligt at spore stoffet væsentlig længere.
Det kan få betydning for bestræbelserne på at gøre det ulovligt at føre bil, når man er påvirket af lattergas. Som lovgivningen ser ud lige nu, er det nemlig ikke ulovligt for bilister at indtage lattergas, når de sætter sig bag rattet. Men med mulighederne for at måle stoffet i længere tid efter indtagelse, vil politiet have bedre redskaber til at påvise, at en bilist faktisk er påvirket - når eller hvis stoffet bliver ulovligt i trafikken.
Samtidig tester instituttet i øjeblikket et nyt måleapparat, som ligner de såkaldte alkometre, som politiet bruger til at teste spritbilister ude i trafikken. Det nye apparat kan politiet bruge til at måle lattergas i udåndingsluften hos bilister, og på den måde kan det på stedet afgøres, om en bilist skal testes yderligere for stoffet.
Mange danskere har stiftet bekendtskab med lattergas under kontrollerede forhold – for eksempel hos tandlægen eller i forbindelse med en fødsel. Men de senere år har politiet i stigende omfang observeret, at lattergas også dukker op i trafikken, indimellem med katastrofale følger.
