Alright, let's get started withtoday's episode.
Get ready to be inspired andempowered.
Welcome, fellow teachers, andhappy new year.
Last year was a bit of awhirlwind.
I was in the throes of mypodcast adventure, teaching my
(01:20):
middles and just trying to live.
But, as life would have it,life became complicated and, for
my own sanity, I had to takesome time off to prioritize my
well-being and life.
I had to take a moment tore-center, refocus and regroup
something I always say when I'min the classroom, and if you
(01:42):
were to speak to some of mystudents, they would tell you I
have plenty of affirmations thatI repeat over and, over and
over again.
And here we are With a brandnew season of Teach, hustle,
grow.
We find ourselves at one of themost exhilarating moments of
the year the start of a freshnew chapter.
(02:03):
It's reminiscent of thebeginning of the school year,
when we're all brimming withhope, excitement, boundless
energy and inspiration.
So, as we kick off the new year, I want to open up and share
what I usually do privately toget things started.
And hey, if you happen to belistening to this episode in
(02:24):
August, during the back toschool season, russ assured that
you can apply this exact sameprocess anytime of the year.
Today, let's delve into the artof setting a theme for the new
year, a practice I particularlyenjoy.
This process holds specialsignificance for me, as it
allows me to reflect on the pastyear and envision the
(02:47):
possibilities that lie ahead.
Setting a theme for the newyear provides a framework for
growth, inspiration and renewedfocus.
It serves as a beacon, guidingus towards personal and
professional development andempowering us to overcome
challenges and determination.
And, as a teacher, we all knowthat is what we face on a daily
(03:08):
basis.
So let's embark on this journeytogether and create a
meaningful theme that willinspire and uplift us throughout
the coming year.
First things first.
Let's dive into the process ofcoming up with a theme for the
year.
It may seem daunting at first, but fear not, it's a lot like
what we do in the classroom wereflect on past lessons and we
(03:31):
figure out what it is that wewant to tackle, and then we plan
for it.
We plan for the future, and youtoo can embark on this journey
of self development.
So let's take a moment toreflect on your past triumphs
and challenges.
Think about the lessons you'velearned and the experiences that
have shaped you.
Now grab your favorite notebookand if you're anything like me,
(03:52):
you probably have too many tocount.
So just grab your favorite oneand let your thoughts flow free
onto the pages.
Just like how we encourage ourstudents to express themselves
through writing, we must do thesame, definitely practicing what
we preach.
So, by engaging in thisexercise, you'll be amazed at
what you can uncover.
(04:13):
It's like creating a curriculumfor your own personal growth.
So embrace this opportunity toexplore your inner thoughts and
pave the way for an incredibleyear ahead.
This year, I've made the bravedecision to cultivate more
courage in my life, and if youlisten to next week's episode, I
will be discussing my word andmy theme in depth.
(04:34):
So, as we work through thisprocess, I want you to think
about the range of qualitiesthat you would want to implement
into your life, for example, like encompassing a range of
qualities such as balance, resilience or innovation.
It's important to selectsomething that deeply aligns
with your goals, just liketeaching life lessons while
(04:56):
juggling a side hustle andpursuing lifelong dreams.
Yes, I think I'm talking aboutmyself.
Your theme should inspire youand serve as a constant source
of motivation throughout theyear.
Envision crafting a captivatingtheme that ignites inspiration
in both you and your students asa school year draws to a close.
You can even consider a themelike culmination celebration,
(05:19):
capturing the remarkableachievements and growth
experience throughout theacademic term, or looking ahead
to the new year.
Embrace the theme infinitehorizons, symbolizing the
limitless possibilities andaspirations that lie before us.
It could mean starting thatpassion project or infusing more
joy and spontaneity into yourlife.
(05:41):
Let these themes resonate andguide you on your journey of
excellence and fulfillment, whatever it may be Now, while
that may be a topic fitting forthe classroom, let's dive into
the realm of personal themes forour own growth.
If you're anything like me, youpossess the heart of a dreamer,
(06:02):
the mind of a planner becausewe're always planning and the
determination of an achiever.
So how can one harmoniouslyblend they're personal and
professional aspirations withintheir chosen theme?
I'm going to give you a fewideas and just want you to take
a moment.
Imagine kicking off your newyear by finally diving into that
(06:24):
side hustle you've beendreaming about for years.
Your personal theme could bedaring entrepreneurship.
It embodies the courage toexplore uncharted territories
and seizing opportunities.
Let's say you yearn to infusemore intentional fun in your
life.
Amidst late nights of gradingand monotonous routines and
(06:46):
leaving school a little too latebeyond the contractual time.
Your theme might be somethingsimilar to joyful living.
Let it inspire you to find joyin every aspect of your daily
routine and create moments thatmake your heart sing.
So, as you contemplate yourtheme for the upcoming year,
consider its impact on variousaspects of your life.
(07:08):
Explore ways to incorporateyour theme into your classroom,
home life, teaching,relationships, finances, health,
spirituality and beyond.
Remember our lives aremultifaceted, extending far
beyond the confines of theclassroom, even though some of
our students think that is wherewe live, sleep and eat.
So allow these themes to guidenot only yourself, but also
(07:33):
those you influence, includingyour students and your future
side hustle.
Let your chosen themes serve asa driving force for positive
change in the lives of everyoneyou touch.
From my own personal experience,I've found that taking the time
to reflect on what trulymatters in life can be
incredibly valuable.
It's like going on acaptivating journey following
(07:55):
breadcrumbs that lead to a feastof ideas and insights.
I draw inspiration from books, quotes and captivating stories I
hear and read along the way.
Some of those stories are evenfound on Instagram or TikTok
some of the few things that Ienjoy during my past time.
All of these sources fuel mygrowth and understanding, and it
(08:17):
elevates how I see in a program.
For me, the word couragecontinued to surface in my
reflection writing for the year.
This word is the center of mytheme.
After analyzing my reflectionsand reviewing the aspirations
that I want for this new year, Icreated a concise and memorable
(08:41):
segment in affirmation of sortswhich I'm fearlessly embracing
challenges, propelling myself tonew heights in my teaching
career.
Inside hustle, this year, Iwill soar and I will make sure
that I use my theme as anaffirmation, and if you are one
of my students, you know that Iconstantly repeat affirmations
(09:04):
all day long and they know whichone I'm talking about.
Now your theme can be avariation of that, or a quote
from a famous author.
It can be whatever you like.
There is one thing I dorecommend Don't go on this
journey alone.
Incorporate friends, colleagues, mentors and coaches into this
process.
(09:24):
A mentor can provide valuableinsights and a coach can offer
structure support to help younavigate challenges and achieve
your goals.
And if you don't have a mentoror coach, let me be that person
for you.
Throughout my extensiveexperience in education, I've
had the immense privilege andhonor of serving as an
(09:45):
instructional coach for numerousphenomenal teachers.
Teaching can often feel like asolitary journey, leaving us
without someone to rely on oreven seek guidance from.
That's why I loved being acoach.
I became the extra pair of eyes, offering valuable feedback and
seamlessly stepping intofacilitate a small group during
(10:08):
instructional rotations.
And guess what?
That same level of support andcollaboration can happen right
here.
You need a cheerleader unitcoach.
I can be your person.

The key is to integrate it intoyour daily life.
Your theme is a commitment toyour personal and professional
evolution.

watch as it becomes the drivingforce behind your journey from
frustration to freedom.
