Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome back to the
Teachers Ed podcast.
I'm your host, edward DeShazer.
Teachers Ed podcast is a placewhere the best and brightest in
education come to be inspired,to connect, to learn and to grow
.
So today's topic I've talkedabout it a little bit before,
but we're going to go a littledeeper into it, and that is the
importance of having a rechargeroutine.
(00:32):
What is a recharge routine, youask?
You know, we often hear thewords R&R and we think rest and
relaxation.
But oftentimes many educatorsshow back up to work on Monday
exhausted because they didnothing.
What do I mean by that?
Because most people are likewell, that's what we've been
told Over the weekends.
(00:52):
We just got to rest and donothing.
There are times where you gotto rest and relax, but
oftentimes we have to beintentional with what we are
doing, with our time, to makesure that we're refilling
ourselves, not just existing, ifthat's really the best way to
say it.
But as educators, you give somuch of yourself daily to your
(01:14):
students.
You give yourself to yourcoworkers, you give yourself to
your school, and then you alsoare giving a lot of yourself to
your own families.
But the reality is you've allheard it you cannot pour from an
empty cup.
If you're running on fumes, youare not showing up as your best
(01:38):
self.
That is why having a rechargeroutine is critical, and today
I'm going to take a few minutesjust to break down why that
matters, what it can look likeand how you can start building
one today.
But I need you to understandthat if your cup is empty, if
your cup is not overflowing, ifyou don't take time to recharge,
(02:02):
you're not just running onempty.
You are running yourself intothe ground.
I need you to prioritize yourenergy, because your students
deserve the best version of you.
So the first tip we're going togo into is identify what your
(02:23):
energy drainers are.
Before you can create aneffective recharge routine, you
have to really understand whatis draining you on a day-to-day
basis.
Think about the things in yourlife that leave you exhausted.
Maybe it's after schoolmeetings, maybe it is watching
(02:44):
the news these days, maybe it'sskipping a meal because you're
just too busy at work.
Once you can identify what istaking the most from you, you
can be intentional with how torestore that energy.
If you don't know what'sdraining you and draining your
(03:06):
life, you can't fix it.
So today, what I want aneducator to do is take five
minutes, write down what'sexhausting you the most.
Is it a friend that's in yourlife?
Is it a family member?
Is it the meetings?
Is it the extra duties thatyou've taken on?
(03:28):
Is it the extra bit of thingsthat you're you know?
Maybe you decided to, you know,be your daughter's Girl Scout
troop leader, you know, orsomething of that sort.
Be your daughter's Girl Scouttroop leader, or something of
that sort?
Is it another responsibilitythat you have taken on that you
had no business saying yes to?
And now you are exhausted?
(03:49):
But take five minutes andidentify what the things are
that are exhausting you the most, because awareness is the first
step to actually being able tocreate a change.
One of the biggestmisconceptions about recharging
your battery is that it has tohappen in these big chunks of
time, and that's just not true.
(04:09):
I've talked about this on otherepisodes where you're doing
micro breaks.
Micro breaks are just smallmoments throughout your day, but
they can make a huge difference.
You know, it could be twominutes in between classes where
you just get up and stretch, ormaybe you're you know what I'm
going to walk from my classroomaround the corridor and back.
(04:32):
Or you know, if you're in astate that has decent weather,
it's just like you know what Igot 10 minutes before my lunch
ends.
Let me just get up and do aquick walk up the block and back
to get some fresh air.
Excuse me, but these smallresets can help prevent burnout
before it starts.
Too often we are waiting untilour cup is completely empty or
(04:55):
our battery is completelydepleted before we are
intentional and try to putsomething back into it Again.
You don't need an hour torecharge.
Sometimes two minutes of deepbreathing or stepping outside
can reset your entire mindset.
So I want to encourageeducators to try that today and
(05:16):
see the difference that taking amicro break can do for you.
And speaking of burnout, ifyou're an educator looking for
ways to build self-care intoyour routine, if you're looking
for a community of educatorsthat understand what you're
going for, if you're looking forlive personal wellness events,

But join us today.
Wellness tip number two iscreating a non-negotiable
recharge routine.
A recharge routine isn'tsomething you do when you have
time.
It's something that you have tomake time for, set aside
specific time every single dayto do something that restores
(06:23):
you.
Maybe it's journaling for fiveor 10 minutes, maybe it's
exercising, maybe it's reading,or maybe it is just sitting in
silence with your cup of coffeeor your cup of tea before your
kids get home or before yourkids get awake, where it is just
your quiet time.
But the key to having asuccessful recharge routine is
consistency.
The more intentional you areabout your routine, the more
(06:48):
your body and mind willrecognize that this is something
that is essential.
Self-care is not optional, isnot a luxury.
It is a necessity and we haveto start treating it as such.
You wouldn't ignore the gaslight in your car.
Your car is going to run out.
You wouldn't ignore that oilchange light even though
(07:08):
someone's probably listening tothis with the oil change light
on.
But I need you to set areminder to block out time.
We have to stop ignoring thewarning signs of our body and we
have to build a rechargeroutine into our daily routine.
It is critical that you do thisfor us to have the best 2025
(07:29):
ever and that's our tagline weneed to have the best 2025 ever.
It's our best year, yet we haveto stop ignoring when our body
is telling us I need to recharge.
We have to stop ignoring whenour body is telling us I need to
recharge.
Build it into your routine today, this week, one of the action
items I want to give you.
Write down three things thathelp you recharge.
Then schedule time for at leastone of them every single day.
(07:51):
Maybe it's not the same thingevery day.
Maybe it's Monday it's reading15 minutes of your book.
Maybe Tuesday you're getting up10 minutes early to enjoy that
cup of tea before you got to getyour kids ready and do all the
other stuff you have to do.
But the goal is that we have tostart small, even if it's just
five minutes.
Our goal is to make thisroutine a habit, not an
(08:14):
afterthought.
For us to do that, consistencyis going to absolutely be
important.
I don't want you to just thinkabout self-care.
What I want you to do isschedule it.
Schedule self-care, set areminder in your phone, set a
reminder in your calendar.
Block it off 10 minutes prior.
(08:34):
It's setting you an alert.
You have to block all the time, you have to commit the time and
you have to stop making excuses.
We make all the time in theworld for all of these other
things, but we forget to makethat time.
That is absolutely critical toourself.
If it's not in your calendar,it's more than likely not
happening.
So what I need you to do todayis put that recharge routine in
(08:56):
your calendar, schedule it likeyou would anything else, and
then don't miss it.
Stay committed and stayconsistent with it.
Your energy is your mostvaluable resource.
I need you to protect it, Ineed you to prioritize your
energy and I need you torecharge it consistently,
(09:16):
because when you take care ofyourself, you are able to show
up as the educator that yourstudents deserve.
But, most importantly, when youtake care of yourself, you are
able to show up as the personthat you most deserve.
You are able to show up as themother your children deserve.
You are able to show up as themother your children deserve.
You are able to show up as thewife your spouse deserves.
(09:39):
You're able to show up as thehusband your spouse deserves, as
the friend your friends deserve.
You are able to show up as thebest version of you as much as
possible.
So it's critical that we go backand we put actions.
It doesn't have to be some big, crazy elaborate, you know, spa
with cucumbers over our eyes anda mud mask Like you.
(10:00):
Just need to set five or 10minutes every single day to make
time for yourself.
You deserve it.
Self-care can't be optionalanymore.
It is a requirement, it is aprerequisite to avoiding burnout
, and you, it is a prerequisiteto avoiding burnout, and you
don't deserve to burn out.
If you found today's episodehelpful, make sure to share it
(10:21):
with another colleague, share itwith another educator that
needs to hear this.
And if you have not, pleasemake sure you subscribe.
Please download these episodesto make sure you don't miss
another one.
New episodes are out everysingle Sunday and the purpose of
them, as I've said, is I'm justtrying to give you small,
(10:43):
actionable things that you cando every single day, because
when you make a percent increaseevery single day, you look back
after a year and the changesthat you have made have been
monumental, but 2025 has to bethe best year yet.
No more excuses.
No more excuses of why thisdidn't work, that didn't work.
It is time that you takecontrol of your life.
Until next time, please takecare of yourself.
(11:06):
Please give yourself the samegrace and mercy that you give
your students.
You deserve it.
And please be intentional withwhat you are doing, who you are
doing with and how you arerecharging your students.
You deserve it.
And please be intentional withwhat you are doing, who you are
doing with and how you arerecharging your battery.
Have a good rest of the weekendand I'll see you all next week.
Bye.
