Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey friends, welcome
back to another episode of
Teaching Mastery Academy.
I'm your host, francesca, andtoday we're diving into one of
my absolute favorite topics howto create a transformative
learning experience using theHero's Journey Framework.
It is such a cool framework andI am sharing with you today.
(00:20):
You see, every great story hasa hero.
You see, every great story hasa hero, and guess what?
That hero, my friend, is notyou.
You are a hero in my eyes, buttoday, this podcast episode is
about a different hero it's yourstudents.
Now, this isn't about being theexpert on the stage.
This episode, it's about beingthe guide who helps your
(00:42):
students conquer theirchallenges and come out
victorious.
So by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to use
the Hero's Journey framework tocreate courses that empower your
students to achieve their ownepic transformations.
How good is that?
Let's do this.
So I thought we'd start withthe basics Now.
(01:05):
The hero's journey is astorytelling structure
identified by Joseph Campbell, and it shows up in almost every
epic tale, from Star Wars to theLord of the Rings to your
favorite Disney movies.
It's a 12 stage journey wherean ordinary person transforms
into a hero by facing challenges, gaining new skills and
(01:28):
ultimately achieving somethingextraordinary.
Now here's the key.
This isn't just for movies.
It's a powerful tool for coursecreators to map out their
students learning journey aswell.
When you structure your coursearound this framework, your
students don't just consumecontent, they experience a
transformation.
(01:48):
In other words, they become thehero of their own story.
So let's break it down step bystep.
We've got 12 steps to getthrough.
So here's how each stage of thehero's journey aligns with your
student's learning process.
And as I go through this, thinkabout how you can integrate
these stages into your owncourse.
(02:09):
So step one, or stage one, isthe ordinary world, and this is
where your students are beforethey find your course.
They're facing challenges,they're feeling stuck or they're
searching for solutions.
Now, your role here is to showthem that you understand these
struggles and thattransformation is possible.
(02:30):
So, for example, a studentmight be struggling to grow
their business but feelsoverwhelmed by all the
strategies out there.
Now your course becomes thebeacon of clarity for them.
So that's stage one, theordinary world.
Stage two we move into the callto adventure, and this is when
your students realize they needhelp.
(02:52):
It's your job to make theinvitation irresistible so you
can show them the opportunityfor change and the value of
saying yes to your course.
And here's my tip for you Usecompelling messaging in your
webinar or sales page thatspeaks directly to your students
pain points and their desires.
(03:13):
Make your students feel likethis is their moment to step up
Really.
Look at that motivationallanguage on your sales page Now.
Stage three is called refusal ofthe call, because not every
student will jump in right away.
They might feel fear or doubt, and so by addressing these
(03:35):
objections with empathy andencouragement, you're much more
likely to create and build thattrust with your students.
So, for example, you couldcreate an FAQ section or a
pre-course webinar thatreassures your students and
helps them see why now is theright time to act Really.
Educate them really.
(03:56):
Build that scaffolding aroundyour offer so that your students
feel that trust beginning togrow.
Now stage four is calledmeeting the mentor, and here's
where you step in as the guide.
You're the mentor who's beenwhere they are and knows how to
help your students succeed.
I suggest you share your storyauthentically.
Show them how you can overcomesimilar challenges and what's
(04:20):
possible when they follow yourframework.
Really show your students thatyou've been there, you've done
that you've experienced the samepain points, and this is the
solution.
This is how you overcame them.
Stage five is called crossingthe threshold, and this is the
moment that this is how youovercame them.
Stage five is called crossingthe threshold, and this is the
moment that your students enrollin your course.
Yay, celebrations, popping ofthe champagne.
(04:41):
They're stepping into a newworld.
They're ready to leave theirold habits behind and they're
ready to embrace transformation, and you really want to
celebrate this milestone withthem.
You could send them a welcomeemail with a personal video to
congratulate them for taking thefirst step.
Or think about something thataligns with your niche, that
really does celebrate the factthat they have taken this
(05:03):
momentous step forward, becauseit is a big step forward for
them.
They're passing with theirmoney, they're putting their
faith and their trust in you,and so, by crossing the
threshold, it is a moment ofcelebration between both parties
.
Stage six is called test alliesand enemies.
Now, this is where the realjourney begins.
(05:24):
Your students will facechallenges, but they'll also
discover resources and supportalong the way as well, and this
is where your course contentstarts to truly shine, if you've
structured it the right way, ifyou've been through Teaching
Mastery Academy and you knowexactly how to engage your
students and structure yourlessons, then this is where your
course really will shine out,and my tip for you is that you
(05:49):
may think about introducingpeer-to-peer interactions like
group discussions oraccountability buddies, so that
your students feel reallysupported and a community on
Facebook is a great example ofthis, too and think about
creating content that tacklescommon obstacles that your
students might have, you know, right at the start.
Really start to introducecontent in your lessons where
(06:12):
you know that your studentsmight have some, some
difficulties or some strugglesgetting started with your course
.
Stage seven is called approachto the inmost cave.
Now, this is the point wherestudents confront their biggest
fears or their limiting beliefs, and they might feel like giving
up here.
So you might want to thinkabout something like mindset
(06:35):
coaching or motivational modulesthat help your students push
through these barriers, remindthem of their why.
So think about how you'vestructured your course and
you've allowed time and space inyour modules and your lessons
for some little hiccups whereyou can build in that
motivational content.
(06:56):
Stage eight is called the ordeal, and this is the turning point.
This is where your studentstake on the biggest challenge,
whether it's completing a majorassignment or implementing your
framework or facing a personalfear.
So really make sure that youare prepared for this and you've
got something in place Like, for example, you could design a
capstone project or a milestonein your course that forces your
(07:19):
students to apply everythingthey've learned so far, also
feedback to guide them throughit.
So think again about how you'vestructured your course and we
teach all of this in TeachingMastery Academy anyway.
But if you haven't been throughTeaching Mastery Academy, then
make sure that you are thinkingabout the structure and the flow
of your lessons and modules tomake sure that you have got some
(07:40):
of those key milestones sortedNow.
Stage nine is called the reward.
Now, this is another point ofcelebration, because your
students have done it.
Your students have achieved asignificant win.
This is where you celebratetheir progress and you help your
students see how far they'vecome, and you could do that
(08:00):
through something likehighlighting their success in
your community or creatingcertificates of completion to
mark their achievement, or maybea free download or a bonus
lesson or something to reallymake them feel special.
You want that reward.
You want them to know that it'sa reward, or maybe a free
download or a bonus lesson orsomething to really make them
feel special.
You want that reward.
You want them to know that it'sa reward.
(08:22):
It's time to celebrate and patthem on the back.
Stage 10 is the road back.
Now the journey isn't over.
Don't think that because we'vecelebrated their success in your
course, that it's the end ofthe road.
Your students need to integratewhat they've learned into their
daily lives, and so we need tohelp them solidify their
transformation.
So what you could do issomething like maybe provide
(08:44):
post-course resources or accessto an alumni group where your
students can continue to growand continue to connect, and
that also leaves the door openfor them to be able to work with
you again down the track, whichis great.
That's that lifetime.
What is it?
The lifetime customer value LCVreally begins to increase at
this point.
(09:05):
Stage 11 is called theresurrection, and this is where
your students fully embody theirtransformation.
They've changed not just theirskills, but also their mindset
and their identity.
This is really exciting.
This is where thosetestimonials and those reviews
start to come in, and how youcan implement this in your
course is you could sharestories of past students who
(09:27):
have gone on to achieveincredible results, because this
will inspire your currentstudents to see what's possible
and also your future students tosign up.
So it's stage 11, theresurrection.
This is where we really want totap into those testimonials.
And then stage 12 is the returnwith the elixir.
So, finally, your students taketheir new knowledge and they
(09:48):
share it with others.
They're empowered, confidentand ready to make a difference
in their world.
And this is really excitingbecause you can encourage
referrals by creating a programwhere students can share your
course with their network, andthen you can recognize them as
ambassadors of your method oraffiliates and really start to
(10:08):
grow that extra pillar ofmarketing for your brand.
So stage 12 is a superimportant stage.
Okay, that's the hero's journeyin a nutshell.
I kind of flew through thatbecause there were 12 stages and
I wanted you to stay with me.
So now that we've walkedthrough the hero's journey,
let's talk about why it's soeffective, and I've got three
(10:32):
reasons why.
For you, it creates emotionalconnection.
When your students seethemselves as the hero, they're
more invested in the process.
They're not just consumingcontent, they're living a story.
They become your bestambassadors, they become your
super fans.
And that's the whole point whenyou look at a sales funnel is
(10:53):
you want your students to comeout the other end as super fans
that will go off and they willrefer your course to other
people, to their friends, totheir family, to the community.
And when it comes to premiumcourses, we want every student
that goes through the funnel tobecome a super fan because the
level of service that we areoffering them, the quality of
(11:13):
content that we're creating, thequality of education that we're
teaching our students ispremium.
So we know that when you havecreated a premium course, you
are so much more likely to getthose super fans, creating that
emotional connection.
And the hero's journey is theperfect framework to encompass
(11:35):
this and also this framework.
This hero's Journey frameworkalso builds momentum because
each stage naturally leads tothe next, keeping your students
engaged and motivated, and itkind of mirrors what we teach
inside Teaching Mastery Academy, where we look all about
scaffolding that learning andstarting with the basics,
starting with easy lessons andthen building up the intensity,
(11:58):
building up the hard and all thedifficulty and making sure that
we have got really goodsignposted modules and points
along the way where yourstudents can step back and
reflect and celebrate their winsand also reinforce what they're
learning.
That's another key pillar ofpremium course design, and we
(12:18):
teach this inside TeachingMastery Academy.
But remember that by usingsomething like the Hero's
Journey, you can see how itbuilds momentum.
You can see how your studentsknow that the path that they're
on is going to lead to aconclusion that's going to be
celebrated and they're going tocome out the other end with a
really successful conclusion.
Now, the third reason why thishero's journey framework works
(12:42):
is because it deliverstransformation, and
transformation, I really believe, should be embossed on a plaque
and stuck in your office rightin front of you where you can
see it.
At all times when you arecreating your course, when you
are creating your social mediacontent, your emails, your
youtube content and so on, youhave to think about the
(13:06):
transformation that comes firstand foremost, and then
everything from there flows.
So the hero's journey is notjust about learning.
It's about becoming, andstudents leave your course
feeling changed.
They've been on a journey, they've had that transformation,
and your course should reflectthat.
They should feel like they'vebeen on a journey, they've had
that transformation and yourcourse should reflect that.
They should feel like they havebeen on a journey with you
throughout your course, you'vecelebrated the wins with them,
(13:27):
you've supported them throughthe losses, the times of
confusion, the times of lack ofmotivation, and they have come
out the other end a transformedperson, in some sense of the
word word, whether it'sknowledge or application, or
psychology.
You need to ensure that thattransformation is delivered and
(13:48):
with premium courses, you don'thave to worry so much, because
that's the whole point of beingpremium.
Is that we focus so heavily onthat word, transformation, and
how do we really apply it to ourcourses?
How do we really ensure thatevery single student that signs
up gets that transformationthrough our teaching methods and
through our ability to impartour knowledge to our students,
(14:12):
so important?
So let's bring this home, let'stie all this up with a great
big red bow.
The hero's journey frameworkisn't just a storytelling tool.
It's a roadmap for creatingcourses that truly empower your
students.
When you position your studentas the hero and yourself as the
guide, you're not just teachinganymore.
(14:33):
You're inspiring transformation.
So I have a little challengefor you today, if you so choose
to take it up.
Look at your course that you'vegot currently, or one that
you've got planning, or that'sin your mind.
How can you map the hero'sjourney onto your students
experience?
What stages are you alreadynailing and where can you
improve Now?

be the heroes of their ownstories.
