Welcome to another episode of Muskie Gear Monday on the Team Rhino Outdoors
Muskie Fishing Podcast.
This week I'm going to talk to Thatcher with Drop Tine Tackle.
Canadian company, family-run business, small, small company.
You know, it's just Thatcher and his wife, and they're making muskie baits,
and we have a good selection of their products.

(00:29):
We have their growler, we have their non-typicals, we have some grubs,
grubs and then grub tails if you're looking for you know I mean it nothing out
of the ordinary right it's just a grub tail but a lot of people use them for
replacing on different baits and.
Adding trailers to things and in just all
that kind of stuff so if you're looking for some of those and then we also have
the growler spinnerbait arms those are new I don't even think we've ever really

(00:52):
even pushed them on Facebook or social media yet but those you can add to I
mean if If you want to put them on a swimming dog or a Poseidon or a bulldog,
Medusa, whatever, it doesn't matter.
All of those things, you can add it to any of your favorite baits.
So we got those on the website as well.
So go check them out at TeamRhinoOutdoors.com.

(01:13):
If you're listening to this podcast on release day, the Big Mac from Livingston
Lures will hit the website today.
That would be Monday, June 10th. And I hope it would be between about 8 a.m.
And 9 a.m. somewhere in there roughly i'm
hoping that's when the livingston big mac will hit the
website it's a new top water bait it's got

(01:35):
makes a ton of noise pushes a bunch of water can reel
it you know any speed won't roll over cool bait had a chance to play with it
a little bit last week it didn't unfortunately we didn't get it eaten definitely
not ideal top water conditions yet in the north woods but we did move about
three fish i believe two or three fish on it and you know so they were

(01:57):
they were interested they will definitely be eaten at some point this year
unfortunately it was not able to capitalize on
the call it a tough top water bait top top water
bite well yeah a little tongue twister there but
anyways yeah so a tough top water bite but we'll
get her done at some point this summer with that the big mac so check
that out and if you're looking for any other gear for your

(02:19):
next muskie fishing adventures as of this coming weekend
as we'll find out here from Thatcher Canadians will kick off their season so
everybody should be out muskie fishing which means everybody should be hopefully
putting some muskies in their net and they'll be needing some new new baits
because that's what muskies do they typically destroy things right that's kind
of how that goes they're not easy on baits and equipment.

(02:43):
Good news for me is I sell baits and equipment, and you can find it all at teamrhinooutdoors.com.
I think that's about all I have, so go check it out. Go dial up this episode,
like I said, with Thatcher. Great conversation.
I always look forward to talking to small businesses because that's what most
of them are in the muskie industry.
I know that many people think, oh, these companies are so big,

(03:05):
but realistically, it's a handful,
two, three people, people many of them working from
home in a garage a basement a small shop
and that's how it how it gets it done i mean i
would say a big company within the muskie industry is
like four or five six people it's they're all really really
small and that and that's what makes the industry cool you
know it's a it's a very small i always call it small

(03:27):
but big right it's it's kind of interesting it's
very it's very cool how intertwined everything is
and how you know like i said it's small but big but
anyways enough of me rambling let's dial up this conversation and
learn a little bit about drop tine tackle all right my
guest this week is thatcher with drop tine tackle and

(03:49):
drop tine tackle is i guess we'll
call them an up-and-coming name in muskie and i won't even say they're up
and coming the growler is their most popular product
that we have and it sold fantastically last
year like quite honestly i had a few customers are asking me
to bring it in and we did and not gonna lie thatcher i didn't expect the response
that we got out of it it's been you know quite pleasant how it's been received

(04:13):
very cool bait and we'll talk about that but thatcher thank you for taking time
out on a sunday night to talk musky fishing and more specifically drop time tackle.
No, thanks for having me on, Jeff. This is going to be cool to talk about things.
Yeah, well, let's talk about things. Let's talk about muskie fishing.
We'll go there first. What got you into muskie fishing? Okay.

(04:36):
Like, which part do you want to get down here?
Yeah, let's start with the very, you know, like, why muskies,
I guess, and then we'll go into why muskie tackle. We'll start with why muskies.
Everybody's got somebody they can pin this back on as far as,
like, who ruined them, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody's got that person. I guess it was just something,

(04:56):
you know, kind of grew up around.
My grandfather owned a resort, which was on Crow Lake up here in Nester Falls, Ontario.
And, you know, growing up there, you know, guests would come in at the end of
the day, you know, talk about the big muskies they caught and this and that.
And so, like, well, you know, maybe one day I get to catch one of these things.
And it kind of just, I guess, snowballed from there and you know my dad brought

(05:20):
me to a to a small little portage lake that was,
you know across one lake and then you had to go up up a creek into a into another
lake basically and then from there I ended up finally catching my first one and I guess I was hooked,
hooked from then on and it kind of became a a bit of a passion a little later
in life a few years after I started guiding and then I started getting into

(05:42):
it a lot more just based on, you know, the clients I had and, and that sort of thing.
So, and it's just been driving along with that ever since.
All right, well, let's move on then to the tackle business. What made,
like, why did you make the transition into, into tackle?
My dad actually, he owned a tackle store and one day I was, you know, getting ready to

(06:07):
go out on the lake with with with a group of people and
i was ripping apart spinner baits and you know
making up you know different blade combinations and this and that and i i come
up with one and the product that i kind of started with the triple deuce but
it's a double bladed thing and that's kind of when the whole craze of like the

(06:29):
double bladed musky mayhem came out you You know, this was back in, I think like 2008,
like that was like, the thing was musky mayhem, you know, two blades,
flashabou, you know, all that.
And so, yeah, I started messing with the spinnerbait and I come up with that
and, you know, a really big musky on my first one.
And I'm like, well, I'll take that somewhere. And I, I, I played with the tackle

(06:54):
business a little bit while my parents owned the bait shop and I had sold some
stuff through there. and then other work got,
you know came up and i left it alone and for a bunch of years and then back
and i think it was 2018 i decided to try to bring it back i needed a winter
hobby between guiding seasons and then it just kind of snowballed from there

(07:15):
and then come up with the growler which you guys carry and.
Pretty crazy how well that went over with you once we got it to team rhino when
you when when, right after you got the first order and then,
you know, I don't, it was a short amount of time and you were already asking
for more and yeah, we're, we're pleasantly shocked.

(07:39):
So, yes, I would, I would say we were in the exact same boat.
I mean, like I said, it's a, it's a great looking bait and we're going to talk about it, but I mean,
I didn't expect it to, you know, it's not like it was this, you know,
some of those baits that are on the market, they're crazy hot and then,
you know, you, you, you sell them, but you kind of know, you know,
they have some hype behind them or whatever.

(08:00):
I don't necessarily know that there's a lot of hype behind your stuff that just
baits that produce, right?
Well, yeah, like, you know, I, I made them one spring and I got them to,
you know, a guy in Soon Arrows.
He really liked it. And then I got a couple up to Glenn and Dave with that 54
bust, uh, that, that first summer.
And I was just playing with the idea. I wasn't going to run with it or anything

(08:23):
like that. And they, those guys did so well on it.
They pushed me to, you know, follow through with it more and get it rolling.
And if it wasn't for those guys, I don't know where it would be yet.
Sort of thing. It would have, they're, they're the ones that put it on the map.
Well, that's awesome. I mean, everybody's got to have a little bit of help along

(08:44):
the way. And obviously, you know, you put it in the hands of the right people, right?
Yeah, yeah. And Glenn and Dave, I mean, they got a bunch of footage with it
and, you know, they really pumped it up good.
And, you know, I can only do so much from our end, but it's guys like that that
really do a good job for things like that.
Well, let's talk about it because your situation is very similar to mine.

(09:07):
Like your wife is very heavily involved in the business, as is mine.
And I would say maybe it sounds like she was unexpectedly involved in the business.
Let's talk about how this happened.
So yeah she was she would help me out a couple times here and there in the very beginning,
basically you know putting swivels on spinners stuff like that and then I kind

(09:29):
of got involved with uh with a lake trout product with smaller tubes for lake
trout fishing during the winter,
and I was getting a bunch of orders and I was getting pretty overwhelmed and,
come in at night I'm like I don't know I'm gonna get all this out tomorrow well
next thing you know She's helping me rig stuff and package things and get it out the door.
And then she just kept telling me, she's like, this is all your idea.

(09:52):
Basically, if you go down, this is all on you.
And so, yeah, now she's, I got her into, she started out with assembly on stuff.
And then now she's doing, tying all the skirts on all the musky baits.
It's pretty rare that I do one anymore. more.
Yeah. And she basically does all the assembly on it. I helped out on your last

(10:15):
previous order to try to get that out a little bit quicker, but yeah,
she's, she's all in a hundred percent now.
So I, it wouldn't be worth that if it wasn't, wasn't for her.
Yep. For the record, I tried to have you get her on with this podcast and you
said she was a little shy.
She didn't really want to, you know, come on and talk. And I can see it.

(10:36):
My wife wouldn't want to be on, on the podcast either.
I don't think. yeah i tried for for a week so yeah i just couldn't couldn't convince her right,
well i mean but she uh she can handle her own
but on on any day with you know when people ask
questions like at the sports show or whatever when when uh
people come to the booth like she's she knows

(10:58):
she knows the product and and knows what it is and
knows all about it so yeah i mean absolutely 100
and it's it's really cool to see it because i
i gather that she's not a huge musky
angler and that my wife would be the exact same way my i
always tell my wife i'm like you know more about musky
gear than anybody should ever know for somebody that doesn't musky fish like

(11:21):
it's i mean i my wife you know something happened to me god forbid it hopefully
doesn't happen anytime soon but if it would like i do think that she could continue
to run the business without me because she, you know, she does know what's going on.
It's not, she's not just hanging out in the shop. She's, she's involved in the business.
Yep. She, she's right up over her shoulders. Just like Jody is. So, yep. And yeah.

(11:46):
Is, so is that what Jody does on a full, full-time basis? Is that,
is that her primary job now?
Yep. Yep. That pretty much both are primary jobs now.
I've, I've been a, I was a guide for this year. would have probably made,
would have made 28 years.
The only year I did miss, I guess, guiding on the lake was the year our border was shut down.

(12:08):
But since then, like that whole, that whole spell during that timeframe,
the technical business really took off and I've kind of just cut way back on the guiding.
And then now I'm trying to put more energy into this and, and.
It's nice to focus more on the fishing tackle side of it now.

(12:29):
Sure. So yeah, I'm not doing two or three jobs.
Yeah, that makes sense. So like all the pouring of the tubes and all that stuff,
is that all done right there by you?
Yep. Yeah, we do it all. We bend all of our own wires for it.
We do our own plastic, our own plastic, so I'll pour our own tubes.
We do all the lead product here, everything like that.

(12:52):
It's you know we're cutting our own hook guards
our own shrink wrap you know basically right
from start to finish we're we're doing every step except
for ordering labels and a couple
other things basically so yeah that's awesome it's really cool to see well you
know it's amazing how many steps are involved oh yeah for sure yep you know

(13:16):
you're not you were telling me you're driving with your daughter does it is
your daughter involved in the business at all.
No, we, well, she, she is sometimes, but it's really hard to get her in on it.
We've had her putting together leaders a little while ago and she did good with
that, but we haven't got her back, back into it.
So, but she, she just started a new job now. So we won't really see much of

(13:40):
her this whole, this whole summer. Okay.
Yeah. She'll be, she'll be working out on an Island on Lake of the Woods.
Oh yeah. All right. It's yeah. That should be fun.
It will. Yeah. yeah she likes it so far very cool
all right let's talk about it we talked about the growler we
mentioned it a little bit why don't you kind of
go through it give the rundown on what it is what makes it special what

(14:01):
makes it different because it's a it's a spinnerbait but it's you know i mean
it's a it's very affordably priced in my opinion and it's very quality right
i mean the quality is high but nobody's gonna know more about the growler than
you why don't you talk about what you made it for what type of fishing you made
it for what people can expect when they have one. Let's kind of go down that road first.
So yeah, it's just, you know, it's a, it's a single bladed, it's got a number

(14:24):
eight Colorado on it. We use a good swivel.
So there, there, as far as I know, there hasn't been any failures there.
And right from, you know, the swivel or the blade to the swivel,
and then all the way to the tail end, the hook, we use probably one of the best
hooks that you can put on, on one. It's super sharp. It's super strong.

(14:46):
It's people just absolutely love it. But I guess the whole plan behind it was
to just make something that runs through the weeds pretty good.
It's easy for everybody to throw. Like at the end of the day,
you're, you know, let's say you're bagged out from throwing double pens all day.
You can still pick one of these out and keep and finish out the day.
Or you can throw it all day. You can give it to your kid. They can throw it

(15:10):
all day. Like it casts nice.
It's easy to bring in and you can fish it through a bunch of different structure.
Or, you know, just about any, any type of structure that you're fishing, I guess.
So that was, that was kind of the whole purpose. And then I just love fishing
spinnerbaits and spinnerbaits on Lake of the Woods was always,
uh, probably one of my go-tos over just about anything else for, for blade-wise.

(15:32):
Yeah, that's interesting. I still think a spinnerbait is fairly underused.
I had some guides actually tell me last year, they're like, you know,
I've been throwing the growler more than I've been throwing regular bucktails
and I've been doing, or, or, or as much, but we've been doing better on the
growler than we had regular bucktails,
you know, for people that are, I guess, unfamiliar with where you use them.

(15:55):
I mean, do you pretty much use this everywhere bucktails would shine?
Everywhere. I, I don't just use them in the weeds. I mean, that's,
that's the mainstay for, for spinner
baits is using them over the weeds or through the weeds thick cover.
But I, I use them on rock reefs. I use them on the points, the rocky points.
You can, you know, cast them out and count them down, you know, down a break line.

(16:19):
And then you can almost even kind of jig them back if you wanted to.
Because they'll, the, when you, when you just kind of let a free fall,
that blade will spin as it's dropping.
Them and you know it's still got action
to it no matter almost what it's doing whether you're cranking
it or letting it free fall or you know we're working it
back it'll it'll do a lot of different things more more than any bucktail will

(16:41):
okay let's talk about the um let's talk about the front of it there's like that
little bell on there i believe you'd call it or i don't know what would you
call it if it's a bell or even like a like a knocker it almost sounds like a
a little rattle in the water.
And so with that, that, that little bigger number eight Colorado on it,
and it's a, it's a very short wire frame spinner bait.

(17:04):
Like I tried to keep it as short as I could without it, you know,
wanting to roll over on itself or anything like that when it's coming through the water.
But with that shorter frame and that bigger blade,
it just gives just a crazy vibration in the water and it'll get that,
that bell and the beads just, just in a way down
there and there's something about it but it's it's

(17:26):
got a pretty mean rattle to it when it's coming in awesome and
if you're looking to get your hands on a growler shameless promotion
which is kind of what we do on this podcast a little bit is you check out teamrattletdoors.com
we have oh geez i don't know how many colors we have now we have a few of exclusive
colors to us but then we also just added a few more on this most recent order

(17:47):
i'm thinking we must have 20 plus colors i'm assuming.
It's a lot now. I'd have to probably look at the paperwork, but I know when
we were putting together for the order, our order rack when we're assembling stuff, it was full.
It was full of growlers. So it was a pretty impressive display.

(18:07):
Yes, very cool. And, you know, like I said, so if you want them now,
you can check them out here.
Thatcher, I will let you talk about your own website because you guys have a
full array of products. It's not just musky stuff.
You talked about lake trout. out it looks like you have tubes of
all different shapes and sizes and rigs and
things like that so we'll let you talk about that before we let you go but the next
one i want to talk about and this one is brand new to us we haven't had

(18:30):
it it literally just came in the most recent batch and that's that non-typical
bucktail let's talk about that it's because it's you know you could talk about
you know blade blade thicknesses and think you know what makes it special but
it's fits right in that wheelhouse with you know different sized blades right i mean that's very
popular right now and it fits right there so why don't you talk about that bait

(18:51):
yeah so that one you know uh what you've got is it's a the magnum eight and
magnum nine blade they are the.
The old old two shoot i can't it's a it's a thinner of the two two thicknesses
on the blades anyways on the two sizes that you can get and it's the magnum
eight eight and nines yeah it's just the offset blade size seems to be a pretty

(19:14):
big craze right now and it's just a product that we put together.
It's had a lot of good success over the last while.
Actually, last year, but the fall of 2022, I won the Muskie Cup using the non-typical 8-9.

(19:34):
That was my blade of choice that weekend. That's the blade that did the best for us over the weekend.
And so, yeah, that one helped me bring home the Muskie Cup that weekend at Nestor Falls.
But yeah, it's a great run of bait. You shouldn't have to do any tuning to it when you get it.

(19:54):
That's one thing we do with our inline bucktails, our double-bladed bucktails,
is we tune them all before they leave the door.
Everyone should spin the second it hits the water when you start cranking it.
Yeah, that's awesome. I mean, it's perfect. That's what musky anglers want, right?
It's they want a buck shell. Yeah, you don't. Right. You don't play around with,

(20:15):
you don't fool around with, you let it hit the water, it starts spinning and
it's ready to go, ready to catch muskies.
Yup. Yup. And, and so far, you know, best to my knowledge, I,
I haven't, you know, when I build my own and I, and I bring them out on the
lake, I don't touch it until, you know, four or five fish later.
And then I, then I might have to start tweaking some things,
but that's, that's pretty typical

(20:35):
after after a fish gets in the net and things get a little beat up so.
Excellent well that covers the two baits that
we have from you we also have this the growler spinnerbait arms those are new
for this season as well and they've been popular and then if you're looking
for grub tails we have those as well but thatcher you know if somebody goes

(20:56):
on your website they're going to see like in in the amount of products that
you guys have for muskies is far greater than what we even had.
Why don't you talk about that for if people want to find out more about drop
tie and tackle, how do they go about doing that?
Uh, so we, you know, we got, you know, Facebook page, then tackle and we got
Instagram, uh, the same thing, but we also got the website.
It's www.droptinetackle.com.

(21:20):
And then, uh, once you're on there, like we got the growlers on there,
we got the blade attachments, we got the grubs, and then we got a spinner bait
called the triple deuce.
We got that a couple sizes that is actually
personally caught my two biggest fish to date one was a 52 and a half the other

(21:40):
one was 51 and a half that's my two biggest so far but yeah there's that big
spinnerbait and then we got you know the the common double eight.
Bladed bucktails, the double nines, the double tens, and they're all,
they're all weighted to, you know, cast and be able to cast good into the wind.

(22:01):
I work with, you know, a bunch of guides here locally and try to try to get
them sorted out so they, they work the way they're supposed to.
And we got that all set up pretty good now.
Sure. The one product we don't carry that I almost did add, it was that like
base jumper, you know, that thing.
Yeah. It looks like it's a bucktail that's probably forward heavyweight.
So I'm guessing it's going to get a little bit deeper.

(22:23):
That's not one that we have now. I could definitely see us adding it at some point.
You know, for anglers that want them, they're going to have to go visit your
website. But, you know, let's talk about that one quickly. What does that offer?
Yeah, so that one was kind of, you know, kind of came together with the idea
of kind of extending your blade season later in the fall.
Like at the time when you're, you know, starting to transition from your bucktails

(22:46):
throughout the summer to your rubber baits or your pole paws sort of thing.
Well, with this, once you cast it out, you get the blades engaged and you can
just, you know, kind of keep a semi-tight line and you can let it free fall
and the blades will keep spinning on the way down.
And, you know, just to be able to work down some of those deeper breaks in the
fall, that's, that's kind of where it came about. out and you can,

(23:09):
you can kind of, you know, almost jig it back, but not quite,
you know, you gotta just raise the rod up and then kind of reel back into it.
And as you're reeling back into it, you just kind of let that,
let the bait kind of pendulum swinging down and it, the blades will keep spinning that way.
And you just keep working it like that back into the boat. And it had great
success the fall we brought it out and it just kind of, it's kind of continuing

(23:34):
to kind of hold its own throughout the products.
And yeah, it's, it's a, it's a big, heavy bucktail is what it is.
And it'll, if you just crank it straight in, it's going to probably run maybe
two feet deeper than your, than your average bucktail.
Cause it's, it's got two and a half ounces of weight in it, I think is what it is.
Okay. Yeah. So it's, it's quite heavy. It's, it's, it's chunky. So.

(23:58):
All right. Yeah, that's cool. So if people are interested in that, go check it out.
I highly recommend you check out their website as well as check out our website.
You know if you're looking for like i said growlers and spinner
arms and the non-typicals and some grub tails you
could find that through us everything else will be found through you guys but i
mean if you're fishing bass walleye lake trout musky northern

(24:18):
pike you could find something to to
entice a fish with at drop tine tackle.com so
very cool thatcher you know i know you guys are
going to fire up your season here you know in what days i
believe right you guys start fishing next saturday we're countdown's on yeah
we're we're saturday oh we finally opened right i think we're the last across
north america to open so yeah and this will be a good early season it's open

(24:43):
and early earlier than you know most years earliest i think it can possibly be,
during the season which is june 15th third third saturday of june yep it's coming
up right away here and i think it's going to be really good water temps are
right on par the fish should be just finishing up the spawn.
So, yeah, it should be good.

(25:06):
Quick question for people coming up to Canada. Have you guys seen a ton of rain
so far in April, May, and early part of June?
A ton. The lake, like for Lake of the Woods, for example, it was this spring when the ice went out.
It was probably the lowest I've ever seen it since I can remember or since I've

(25:26):
paid attention, I guess.
And now we're probably pushing, I don't know, eight inches to a foot higher than normal.
So it's come up a lot. And that's the same with a bunch of the other smaller lakes around.
Like everything is as high now it seems
which which we needed it we needed the rain but i

(25:47):
don't know if we needed it quite like we did quite quite as quickly as we did
yeah like the like the rainy river is overflowing like it's there's still more
water to come and it can it can stall out here anytime for a little bit that's
crazy how that works out we've seen the exact same thing i mean,
it's like every day every day it seems like we

(26:07):
get rained on and i'd much rather have the rain than the snow i
don't have a whole lot of use for snow so that that
part's fine but it's like you said we it could stop
anytime it wants to now like there's yeah a river
close to my house i'm guessing we were and it'll fluctuate quite a bit but i'm
guessing it was probably seven feet lower than what it is right now when like

(26:29):
you said when when the ice came off so and it'll do that i mean it's not that
uncommon for it to fluctuate quite a bit but it was much much lower than what what
it is right now and it's and it's been raining for you know basically the majority
of the last half of the week here so it's likely going to get a little bit higher yet.
Yeah, yeah, it's going to keep, I think things are going to keep coming up for

(26:50):
a little bit. I don't, you know, if we keep getting rain, I don't see it cresting anytime soon.
So it can, it can slow down anytime. And then, and then not only the rain,
it's been super windy too.
Now the wind, the wind can mellow out anytime as well. Agreed.
I mean, so it sounds like even though you guys are a little north of us, it's been much the same.
Lots of wind, lots of rain, lots of varying temperatures up and down,

(27:15):
been kind of a yo-yo that way. It's been, it's been different, but they all are right.
That's what keeps us going after them. Keeps us on our toes.
I guess it makes it interesting. Everything, the changing conditions all the time.
Right. Right. Yeah. They're actually calling for a frost warning tonight,
kind of more, you know, out and away from the, from the lakes,
kind of down more towards the farm country part of, part of where we're at.

(27:37):
They're calling for a frost tonight.
So it's, it's up and down like a yo-yo.
Yep. Absolutely. Yeah. that well thatcher i

about drop time tackle with us i hope many of our listeners find
it interesting and they go check it out like i said either check it

products with you so i want to thank you for that yep i want to also thank our
