Welcome to what we'll call Emergency Podcasts. It's Friday, if you're listening
on release day, and we're talking about the Pitbull.
I've been waiting to do a podcast on the Pitbull until we knew the official release date.
And unfortunately, my guest here on the intro is Brad Rue with Musk Innovations.
He was holding up the show, actually, Brad. It's all your fault.
This Pitbull could have been out on my end quite a while ago.

(00:28):
But in trying to be fair to both parties, we both wanted to have enough stock.
At least, I don't know, we feel like we're going to try to hopefully meet demand.
I don't know if we will or not, because between the two of us,
we're cautiously optimistic that this is going to go well.
But I don't know that either of us truly know what the demand is for this bait currently.
That's very true. We do know that when we gave our pro staff the samples,

(00:57):
prototypes, whatever, before we released them, they really had tremendous success on them.
It was really quite interesting. in the feedback
and the success and the amount of fish that were caught has been
tremendous so i actually got pretty excited about
the bait once it got in the hands of some of these guys for sure
well because if we look back you know like this everybody thinks that this maybe

(01:20):
came together kind of quick and it did sort of but the idea was something i
talked to you about gosh i don't know a while back when when a certain retailer
released a much larger version of a bulldog i said well well, gosh,
I think there's actually room there in between these two.
And I don't know that either one of us two were, you know, we're like super
fanatics about it. Like, yeah, this is something we really have to do.

(01:43):
But then, you know, late last year, it was something like, okay,
yeah, we should really try this.
And then, you know, like you said, I think there was some excitement that this
was going to be a good thing.
But then, you know, I do want to say that this dog, if you've used it,
it definitely isn't exactly the same as, you know, your traditional bulldog.
It's got a little bit different weighting to it, and it makes it react a little

(02:06):
bit differently in the water.
So it's not like it's just only a new size.
It's got a little bit different action to it. And I think there's going to be
room for regs, pit bulls, mags, pounders.
I don't think that it eliminates anything.
It just adds another tool to your toolbox.
Right. Nope, I agree. I don't think it's going to eliminate anything,
but I think people will be pleasantly surprised when they throw it.

(02:28):
And the reason I say that is not only for myself throwing it, but because I'm biased.
But all the feedback we got with, I believe, a lot of honesty was how much it
hopped and how much you could almost do a walk the dog with it type of thing.
You know, just went side to side.
And honestly, the fish catching results really show that. I mean,

(02:50):
I don't know anyone who got them that didn't catch fish up, which is pretty amazing.
And especially considering we've had some crazy weather patterns this year.
I don't know if it'll ever stop raining in front after front.
But, you know, people have been having a lot of success and it's pretty exciting.
And yeah, we did weight it different.

(03:13):
We took our time, had how many different prototypes of weight, if you will.
And, you know, picked out the one when we got in the water when,
yeah, that, that's the one, that's it, you know, and, um, we tested it in pools
to start, but yeah, it's been pretty exciting actually.
Well, I think that's, you know, part of it too, is people were like,

(03:34):
well, why aren't you guys releasing this bait right away?
Cause we've been talking about this, you know, we've had, you know,
a little teasers out basically since Chase Gibson kind of let the cat out of the bag.
And I don't know when that was. It was probably early May, maybe late April
potentially. Yeah. Something like that. Yep.
And then, but up until that point, we really hadn't had a lot of,
we'll call it, you know, in air quotes, real world experience with this bait.

(03:56):
It was a lot of it was done over the winter and we're throwing it in pools or
ponds or wherever there's a little bit open water. We weren't really like fishing the bait.
We were just testing to see if it, so we definitely needed to make sure that
we got it out and, and fished it and make sure that it did catch fish.
And as you've alluded to, I think I'm, I'm in the same boat that you are.
I think that I don't, I I'm fairly positive that almost every single person

(04:20):
that got them from me caught muskies on them.
And the feedback was, you know, overwhelmingly positive.
It was like the hop is the one that everybody keeps talking about.
Yep. Yep. Yep. I mean, and, and, you know, I'm not going to necessarily name
names, but some of the people that we got these baits to are,
you know, been in the musky world a long, long time.

(04:41):
We've seen thousands of lures in the water. and for them to give me the feedback
they gave me was kind of blew me away to be honest I was like really wow that's
that's exciting because coming from some of these prominent people.
And they aren't going to, you know, give me a load of, you know,

(05:02):
what, so yeah, it really fired me up for this bait and yeah, we're hopefully,
hopefully loaded, you know, websites loaded up to, to meet demand. We'll see.
I got a lot hanging on the wall right now, so I know you do too.
Yeah, I have a very good number of hanging on the wall and more to come to anticipating

(05:22):
that we will move some product and, and I believe that we will.
So Brad, let's talk about that. you talked about you have a
lot hanging on the wall so i know for us at team rhino outdoors
we will have 34 colors at release date i
believe there's five that are coming with
we'll say like our restock batch kind
of and not every color is getting restocked we just kind of guessed on which

(05:44):
ones we thought were going to be the best selling colors along with the shallow
pit bull which we can talk about shortly why don't you talk about you know the
colors available because people can go right now to my website and they can
see any any picture that's on there that's the color that we have right now,
but for your website, you have everything hidden.
I don't have the colors up yet. I have them hidden.
However, over the next two days, three days, well, I guess, whatever,

(06:07):
over the next few days, you'll be seeing it on, on socials. You'll be able to see all the colors.
I think I did, I think 14 or 15 colors.
I tried to really pick out stuff that you didn't do for, for team Rhino.
And I tried to pick out stuff that, you know,
has, has been very popular good selling and
catching like blotchy walleye for instance

(06:28):
of course and white tail wisconsin walleye wisconsin so you know stuff like
that that i know have caught a lot of fish in the past people really like these
kind of cut these colors because they've been successful with them so those
are the ones we did and and i threw a few curveballs in there just stuff i've kind of wanted to do,
I did a, like a natural perch and I did a, like the orange belly perch,

(06:53):
but I did with orange tail.
So, you know, just a couple of little different twists and stuff,
but we got the, we got the standards that.
Um, and I know you do too. Some of the standards that are, are just fish catching
machines in, in other baits. So I, I, you know, they will be in this too.
Yeah, that's good. I, the blotchy walleye was one that people have been asking me about.
Certainly not one you're going to find at Team Rhino Outdoors.

(07:13):
You can absolutely go visit Brad's website, but Cisco-ish colors, Brad.
I know there, you had, I think it was Wisconsin, Cisco, and then you had that
lunar series that you did over the winter. Like, do you have that?
Yeah, I did a, I did a couple of lunars. we did
lunar money and and lunar ghosts which
have been the two most popular lunar colors and have caught

(07:34):
the most fish that i know about anyway both very
cisco e cisco-esque type
colors or shad if you will so
yeah i think between you and me we got the basis covered
to be honest there's a lot of good colors yeah well i
mean the great thing about what you guys do these days is that like color is
unlimited right i mean so we can pretty much do whatever and

(07:57):
i know i had brian send me some samples on
like i think i threw like five different things at him that we've never
done and of course then people are like oh you're gonna get that
in mag and you know all this other stuff so you'll you'll see.
That coming too but i asked for samples for brian
and then one of my text messages to brian was like i don't even know
why i bother asking for samples like i never make any changes

(08:17):
to him because he always knocks it out of the park i mean because yeah
they do a good job over there because what they can do is literally i
mean it feels like there's nothing they can't do
that's how endless it is yeah it's that's
that's also been kind of a a unique thing with
if you guys don't know brian at midwest tackle makes all my product and
of course makes the product that jeff

(08:38):
buys for me obviously so we've really
pushed the envelope over the years on different colors and different ways
to do colors and colors on the inside and
changing you know colors that change
and all kinds of stuff so that's kind of actually been
been one of our fun things to do and see how far we can push the envelope on
rubber baits a lot of the stuff's never been done on rubber i think you see

(09:01):
it quite a bit on hard baits but it's never been a rubber thing because rubber
paint rubber lure paint is way different and anyway yeah so we got we got tons of great colors and,
And, uh, I think people are going to, going to love them. No, absolutely agree.
So one quick question before we talk about the shallow pit bull,
let's, let me just ask you a question.

(09:22):
Did you ever imagine that when you came out with the original Bulldog that there
would be this many different variations of it?
No, I'm shocked. We've been figured one more out. Right.
I mean, you know, the different numbers of tails and different sizes and,
and, but I, You know, I think it lends the fact that it's been,

(09:43):
you know, obviously a successful bait and catches a lot of fish.
So it kind of lends itself to doing those things and, you know,
tweaking the size or, you know, the number of tails or whatever to meet your,
you know, different fishing conditions and stuff.
And so, yeah, it's product lines definitely growing over the last 31 years.

(10:05):
Yes. And I'm willing to bet you're not done yet. It'll probably continue.
We always got stuff in the hopper. Yeah, it's kind of what we do. Yeah.
All right. So let's talk shallow pit bull. And this is something you and I haven't even talked about.
I'm assuming that you've, you will be adding those to your website as well,
right? You must have an order in for those.
I do. So I got my order in, you get your order in, and I know they're working

(10:27):
on them soon, if not already started.
I know you tested them in the pool and then we, we made a few prototypes just to make sure.
And you tested them not too long ago so that bait will literally be our first,
actual release of a pro dog

(10:49):
in shallow now we've done them here and there for custom i used to i took a
couple like mags to show shows and i think last year we did a small run of pro
mag shallow dogs on our website but as far as an actual release and an actual product
this will be the first pro style shallow bulldog pit bull in this case and.

(11:15):
Yeah it the action's sick it really is cool yeah i will say that is one thing
about you know i'm excited about the pit bull but i'm fairly i'm very excited
about the shallow pit bull just because it's you know it it's another tool right
brad it's just it's always about different things like Like you're, you know,
we'll call them your traditional shallow mag, your shallow regs.

(11:37):
Those baits typically hang, like they have a much, they even have a slower sink
rate than what the shallow pit bull has.
So they're up there, you know, you work them in that upper, you know,
one to two foot of the water column really well.
I mean, if you try to work a shallow mag or a shallow reg too fast,
it's going to come out of the water.
So there's a lot of pause, a lot of hang, and you got to slow your presentation down.

(12:02):
Would you agree with that, Brad? Brad, I think that's probably right,
right? Absolutely. Yeah, with that straight wire in there, that body on that
bait glides a little bit more and has almost like a rise action,
if you will, even though it doesn't really rise. It rises on the pull.
And then, yeah, you kind of got to let it hang there, fall a little bit before
you hit it again. Or like you said, you'll just pull it right out of the water.

(12:23):
So it definitely has a way different action than a pro-style harness. this.
And now I will say that it'll run a little bit shallower.
The standard shallow will run a little bit shallower than a pro shallow,
but only about a foot difference. Yes. In my estimation.
Agreed. A hundred percent. That's what I noticed in, you know,
when we tested the actual production shallow pit bull, I would say it was in

(12:48):
like that one to three foot range.
You could easily keep it up in the upper foot, but you had to,
you know, kind of rip up on your rod.
Whereas like a traditional shallow dog, you don't have to rip up on your rod at all.
That thing will stay in that one foot really well. well
so if you're looking to work the shallow pit bull over you
know rocks and weeds and stuff like that just be mindful it's
going to run a tad deeper than your shallow still what i would say was in that

(13:12):
range of shallow but the other thing about it is you can work it as you as you
mentioned because of that pro that pro harness and from what i do understand
on this one there actually is a little bit of weight on the harness based on
talking to brian and there's a little bit yep Yep.
And so it will, you can work it a little bit quicker.
It's definitely a little faster shallow presentation than what you would with

(13:33):
a traditional, you know, shallow dog.
So again, you know, we're just creating a product that's, they're all different, right?
And they're, they're, they're all find a place in a time and a place.
So it's definitely something that I think many anglers are going to enjoy playing
with and using because it's definitely a different tool.
Yeah for sure for sure i know
in the past you know for myself i've made

(13:55):
shallow pro pounders and shallow pro
mag dogs and you know fish them and where you couldn't traditionally fish a
pro pounder let's say it just ran too deep and i did notice it does run a little
bit deeper but it has the same hop so you know you're still you're still getting it shallow.

(14:16):
And, but you, you got the, you got the crazy hop and, you know,
yeah fish fish love them i i really have been contemplating coming out with
full style shallow in you know
my my stock array but it's to the point where i have a lot a lot of lures.
So it's a you know it's kind of like which which one do you you know bite off

(14:39):
next if you will so you know that may be something i just do as as custom down
the road but the pit bull is going
to be standard the shallow pit bull is going to be standard prolongation but
pretty excellent yes absolutely so let's before
we wrap this up do you know how many colors you're
going to have in the shallow pit bull upon i ordered the same colors
yeah i ordered the same colors so i got like 14 or whatever coming that too

(15:02):
yeah so we we pared ours down a little bit i want to say it's maybe like 20
in the shallow and that's basically just about we'll see what the demand is
like right brad i mean this is kind of a guessing game it's been a guessing
game for us right from the beginning,
as things have taken off here, I feel like it's been less of a guessing game.
Like we feel like we have, you know, we have the potential to hit a home run

(15:24):
on this one, but we're also not positive that that will happen.
So it's, and shallow dogs, it's the same thing.
But I guess the one thing is, and I'll tell you about this, and I've used the
pit bull quite a bit this early part of the season is.
I feel like all anglers can throw this bait all day long, or most anglers,
I should say, I should be able to throw this bait all day long without the,

(15:45):
the use of, you know, super extra heavy, long rods and things like that.
I mean, you can pick up a heavy to an extra heavy rod and, you know,
eight foot to nine foot range and you're set to go.
And I feel like it's not a very difficult bait to throw all day long.
So if you, you know, we're one of those people that didn't want to throw a mag
dog all day long, cause you just got kind of worn out. I, I definitely feel

(16:06):
like this fits in that wheelhouse.
It does. And you know, it's really interesting too. I was thinking of this earlier,
you know, we talked about the different anglers that we, you know,
pro staff and stuff that we've given it to early.
And it's funny because this thing has caught fish from Canada to Minnesota to
Wisconsin to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

(16:27):
I mean, what really kind of intrigues me about it is it just,
I don't know, it kind of, it seems like it's filling a void,
even though I never thought it would.
You know, those didn't seem those sizes were that far apart,
but it's, you know, when we first talked about it, I thought,
well, that would be a good, you know, bait for Wisconsin or potentially,

(16:51):
you know, some of the Lake Ohio and stuff where, you know, people like smaller baits, but.
It's caught fish everywhere and it's got some big fish already you
know and caught some really big fish
on traditional big bait water if you will so
you know i i really love the
size and and it is way way easier

(17:12):
to throw and you know
we're out there to enjoy also not beat the heck out of yourself and you know
i've been muskie fishing probably well over 40 years and probably dang near
50 years and you know eventually you kind of can't throw pounders and stuff as much anymore so,

(17:33):
it's it's gonna be it's gonna be number one out
of my box for sure for a while definitely so yeah anyways that's kind of the
rundown on it you know brad why don't you talk about where everybody can find
the pit bull on friday it'll be friday at 9 a.m central time you know so if
you're listening to this podcast way early on friday morning you have to wait
a few hours and if not many of you By the time you hear it, it will be available.

(17:56):
So go check it out. Brad, why don't you go take it away?
Yeah, so this is kind of a unique deal. I did hear Jeff approached me that we
want to do a product together.
I've done a few products with a few other retailers together.
I said, yeah, that'd be awesome.
Let's do this thing together. So there's literally two places you can get it.
And it's not going to be at retail stores. It's only going to be online.

(18:17):
And it's going to be on Team Rhino Outdoors and on Musk Innovations, both our websites.
Sites and friday morning at nine they'll start and then you know obviously throughout
the season we'll just keep selling them or that's just going to be our release
date so yeah two places not too hard to figure out,
Perfect. Well, Brad, I want to thank you for taking time out.

(18:37):
I'm going to go jump into a conversation ahead with Jeff Vandermortel.
And I hope everybody takes advantage of, you know, the opportunity to get their
hands on this bait. I know it's been, you know, something we've talked about for a long time.
Many people have been anxiously awaiting and impatiently awaiting the release of it.
And now's the time. So go check it out at muskyinnovations.com and teamrhinooutdoors.com.

(19:03):
All right first guest i have in this pitbull
edition podcast emergency pitbull edition
podcast because we didn't have a release date until earlier
today then we officially got the release date on
it and that will be friday a july
15th or july 15th july 5th for
those of you that are you know right on top of

(19:25):
the podcast if you're listening right on release day it'll be
9 a.m on the team rhino outdoors website and you
can also get them through muskinnovations.com those are
the only two places you're going to find a pit bull so the reason
i have jeff on and i'm also going to talk to gus manti is because those two
had pit bulls in their hands very early so jeffrey i want to thank you for taking

(19:48):
time out of your schedule i know it's only 10 52 p.m and you got a guide in
the morning so thank you very much for uh for coming on to
you know help debut this bait that you definitely were involved in significantly
involved in the testing of it and you know you and i had a good couple days
on the water with it and you've had a pretty good we'll say early season with

(20:09):
it and i think you know the best is yet to come even for rip and rubber yet so thanks jeff.
Yeah. Anytime, man. Happy to help out. I mean, when we, this plan was first
hatched for this bait, I think it's something that a lot of folks,
especially people in Wisconsin have, you know, guides in particular have,
you know, talked about or, you know, wished for, for a really long time.
And this was a, in my opinion, a pretty easy home run as far as like a fish catching bait.

(20:33):
It's just that perfect size. It's that nice tweener size.
And we certainly proved right out of the gate that we got a bit,
I mean, opening day when, when it opened here, I went out and we put hooks in
three, three from early put three in the boat on it on opening day for the fish
into the mid forties for non-memorandum weekend.
Not a bad, not a bad showing for the first time out. And we put in quite a few
nice fish up to 49 and three quarters in my boat since that in Northern Wisconsin.

(20:55):
So it's been, it's been a tremendous producer and I think it's going to be a
big fish catcher this year. So really excited to see it come to fruition and
get these into everybody's hands.
Yeah. Well, what we want to stress is with, you know, anglers,
we're looking for, or, you know, a larger option than a reg dog,
but many of them, you know, I talked to a lot of, you know, guides and their,
their, uh, customers did not want to, you know, throw a mag dog.

(21:19):
And so this is a perfect, larger profile without all the, you know,
the stress that puts on you throwing mag dogs.
I will say though, it's still going to like when you're ripping rubber,
it's still going to give you like the sore ribs.
It doesn't alleviate that, but it's certainly
much easier to throw out there especially if you you know
lob cast it and then you uh thumb it down it's a very
popular technique for throwing rubber if you're let it

(21:41):
flail all around it can have you know tangling issues and stuff but that's common
with every rubber bait so and sure you know jeff one thing we know too is you
don't have to throw double extra heavy rods you don't want you don't have to
throw this thing on 10 footers you can pretty much use almost any rod you want to as As long as it's,
you know, we'll go from like heavy action on up.

(22:02):
I've used it on an eight foot heavy. I've used on an eight, six extra heavy.
I've used on a nine foot extra heavy.
All of them do the job perfectly great. So certainly, I agree.
And just like anytime when you're throwing rubber, though, I do think it's important,
you know, the other thing that does eliminate actually too,
is, you know, especially with customers or people who don't throw a bigger rubber
or rubber at all, it, you know, mag dogs stuff can be a little bit more prone

(22:25):
to following just because you have people that want to whip it up country mile.
And, you know, if you just lob cast it and thumb it, you want to do the same
thing with this bait, any rubber bait, that's crucial.
Watch that bait when it's in the air, you go to cast it nice and easy back,
nice and firm forward and let your rod
you know load and into the flinging for you and watch what that
bait's doing in the air keep your thumb on it so that bait lays down nice for

(22:45):
you and that's true with the pit bull but it's true with
anything um you do want to watch any any baits i got the flexible
harness too because they do get a little bit more wiggle a little bit more wobble
in the air that tends to give them really nice action in the water but you do
want to watch that in the air and again that's any rubber bait but really you
know for people who this might be one of their first rubber baits or if you
don't throw a ton of rubber and you're excited for this one because Cause it's

(23:06):
a little bit more of that neutral size and then it's a little bit more of that tweener size.
Just a mode that is still applies anything with a sharp hooks and rubber and flailing tails.
Uh, you just want to, you want to do that regardless, but watch that,
watch what that bait's doing in the air. Fly thumb pressure is needed to lay
it down real nice on that cast.
For sure. Good tips for throwing rubber baits. And the other thing too,
I don't do is a lot of people want to sometimes reel their bait up towards their lead.

(23:29):
You know, their leader is really close to their eye, their first eyelet.
And i like to leave you know two three feet
of line hanging out before i fling this bait too and yeah
that helps a lot that's a good yes absolutely leave out more
line you don't want because otherwise it throws too much spin on the bait i
mean if you're using a rod for any rubber purposes that's a little too flexible
a hard forward toss when you're you know exerting that extra effort it puts

(23:52):
a lot more force and spin on on that bait and that inertia you have to slow
it with your with your thumb than on the reel right so it's not you don't want
to work harder than you have to you,
but working harder works against
you because it really makes that stuff stretch and spin in the air.
And again, this all rubber baits, right? But you're right. Leave out a little
bit more, more than use the leverage to your advantage versus just working harder
with two inches of line and a leader out.

(24:14):
Definitely. You know, Jeff, you, I'm sure that you had this in the hands of some clients.
Like what were their impressions as they were able to use it?
It was something that they, that they were like, yes, this is a tool I need to have.
Or, you know, what was the first impressions when you put it in the hands of some clients?
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, it was a hit all around.
I didn't have any, all the feedback was overwhelmingly positive,

(24:37):
especially from the number of people who caught fish on them.
Obviously, that's always a good selling point.
But yeah, for any of the people, especially I've got some of the guys from Muskie
Academy, the boat, and some of the guys that have been in my boat a bunch as
well, and have thrown a lot of rubber in my boat, and they were really pleased with how it fit. it.
I've been throwing it on an 8.3 extra heavy JVR Ripper from Kramer Custom Rods,
which is a really, really, really nice medium rubber rod.

(25:00):
It's a little shorter than most. You don't have to quite go to that 9 foot,
but unless you're fishing out of something that's a super high-sided boat,
you know, a really big ranger or some sort of a bay boat or center console type
thing with really raised rear way up off the water, it's a really nice rod.
It gives you a lot more flexibility when working that small rubber down closer to the water.
And that's been a really nice fit for us.

(25:21):
Yeah for sure all right so jeff we kind of
hit on the pit bull the other the next step then would
be the shallow pit bull for people that are looking for
that bait that's going to be out probably i'm guessing slightly over
a week after the original release of the pit bull we
kind of hoped that it would all release together but you know quite
honestly we've been talking about this bait for so long we just

(25:42):
sort of needed to get it out in people's hands so they
can actually play with it because otherwise we're just kind of beating the drum
on something that they're like yeah this is never going to come out so
we're kind of losing them that way right and that
wasn't even my design necessarily it was like one of those
days where you know chase gibson catches one
on and he's like well am i allowed to say anything on it and i'm like i guess

(26:02):
yeah go ahead you know we'll see what happens right and you know so obviously
you know things worked out as far as you know the promotion of it and then after
that we wanted to get production baits into people's hands so that we could
see you know just just make sure that you know the eyes the eyes were uh dotted
and And the T's were crossed, right? Cause we don't want to. Yeah, totally.
Well, I think you guys did it the right way. I mean, it's one of those things

(26:23):
where we, you know, we had the prototypes, you gave them a pretty good testing,
but you want to get them tested in the field. You want to get them tested in the hands of customers.
Obviously chase, you know, they, they're off to the races a little earlier down
there because their season's open and stuff down there and it wasn't up here.
So they, he caught some fish on it and obviously his opinions were, were, uh.
We're, we're positive on his reviews of it with the, in the hands of people in his boat.
And it's just good to get that, you know, spread that around a little bit and

(26:46):
make sure everything was going.
And I know you guys were, you guys are Brad and Kicker and Brian over there
working their butts off to, to make as many as they can and get them all produced
to their high level of quality and, and get them out to you and get their stuff
stocked. So they're ready to go.
So I think, uh, yeah, man, it's good to see it come out and really ready for
it to hit the shelves. And it's going to be exciting.
Yeah. Especially cause I mean, I think once it gets in the hands of many anglers,

(27:07):
we're going going to see you know even more good things happening right
so it's been yeah it's going to catch a lot of fish dude it's a
good bait right all right so jeff you know
not to bore him with you know uh you know whatever however long
this episode ends up being half hour long you know infomercial because that's
legitimately what this podcast is going to be but let's talk a little bit about
fishing up in the north woods because it's been a couple weeks since i've had

(27:28):
you on the uh we'll call this the jvr podcast you've been on a few times lately
but yeah you know what's going on in northwood what are you seeing up there
we've had a really good month
today is what july 1st or 2nd somewhere in there it's the early part of july here.
And starting to lose track of the days which you always know it's a it's a good
sign right on the water a bunch of putting a lot of fish in the boat i think we're at.

(27:50):
67 or 68 muskies in the boat so far since memorial day weekend so we've been
averaging about that you know two fish a day give or take and some days five
six seven of them some days none or one you know so it does vary but all in
all i mean the opportunities have been there on pretty much all
of our outings i would say with the exception maybe one
or two but i mean the opportunities have been there and that's musky fishing

(28:11):
sometimes they make it to the boat sometimes they don't but overall we've
been lucky to land a lot of really nice fish too especially a couple
that work you know those ones that are hanging on where you just
go up well i just can't believe that worked you know what i mean get them out underneath them
they fall off kind of deal uh so we had you know more than
one of those two but overall the bites have been really steady it
has been an excellent rubber year the pit bull have been

(28:32):
a really big producer for us along with other you know your medium-sized rubber
in general but just that rubber bite in general and even upsizing we've
already started catching some fish on some magnum rubber here too as of
about a week week and a half ago we started throwing some bigger stuff
mixed in there when fish were following some smaller stuff and got
a few to convert but overall that medium-sized rubber has been the top producer
in my boat which like i said for our intensive purposes here today of course

(28:55):
the pit bull is leading the charge on that so yeah water temps up here about
67 to 70 we had a big cool down today and that's you know You get these cool-downs in July,
you really expect a good top water bite to emerge.
And you can really expect usually a pretty good day.
Those cold fronts can be some really good days when the water temps are elevated.

(29:17):
Right now, we're kind of below average, I would say, for this time of year,
and certainly below where we've been at this time of year the last several years.
Normally, this time of year, or not normally, but the last couple of years this
time of year, we've been more in that 72 to 75. and even I can recall a couple
years earlier where we had those big heat waves around that 4th of July week,

(29:38):
where it was you know that 90 degrees flat calm
you know weather like this where you get that 58 60 degrees
for high rain mist on and off showers
all day you know that usually produces a monster top
water bite just a monster bite in general and right now like i said i wouldn't
say it hampered the bite too much i mean there's definitely been some fish moving
and again a few few fish certainly caught and some big fish on the move this

(30:00):
past week but look for the warming trends to definitely be a bit more of a positive
influence right now than the cool downs we We've got a couple of warm days coming up here.
It looks like today's cold, and we've got a warm-up here over the 4th and the
following day, I think it is.
Thursday and Friday is supposed to warm up, and then Saturday, a little cooler.
But, yeah, really some good fishing ahead, man. I think we're at the start of summer peak up here.

(30:24):
Lead growth is terminal and all the way up in most lakes. A couple of lakes
maybe a little bit behind yet, and the big fish have been up and moving.
There's been some really nice fish on the move and some really nice fish caught
both in my boat and many other boats here.
Between the guys from muskie academy reporting in and our reports in there and
also just people in my in my orbit in my circle that i've been hearing or seeing
whether they made it to facebook or not but there's been some big fish caught

(30:46):
so really really really an excellent start to the year.
All right, Jeff, one thing I was going to ask you about or, you know,
have you talk about quickly was the Muskie Academy.
You brought that up and, you know, you gave, you let me in, get a sneak peek
of it and take a look at what you actually had to offer.
And I think in some cases you've undersold it a little bit. I mean,

(31:07):
there is, if you're, if you're a newer muskie angler and you want to know pretty
much everything, there is a video on it.
And then you have the access to the Facebook group, which I got to take a look at.
You know, there's a ton of information in there. there, you know,
for people that are looking to continue to take their journey to the next level
on, you know, muskie angling, why don't you talk a little bit about how they

(31:28):
get involved in muskie academy?
Cause like I said, I think, you know, you know, in some cases you've maybe not
sold it as well as you should have Jeff. It's a, I mean, it's a pretty incredible product.
Yeah. I really appreciate that. And I appreciate you being a member as well.
That's a, that's really awesome. That speaks volumes. You got a lot of really
good anglers in there and I'm just,
I just, it really makes me, it really makes me happy to see people out crushing

(31:48):
fish and, And especially when you get the people that are,
you know, just, man, I never would have done this, or I just didn't have the
confidence to do this before I saw that, or just, I got your weekly report and
man, I got out for four hours, you know, the wife and kids went to town,
did whatever I was up on vacation.
I had all the information I needed to get out and go crush. And I went out there,
bought a two fish and man, just made my weekend, those kinds of messages.

(32:09):
Man, that just really makes my day. So I appreciate you saying that.
And yeah, as far as getting involved in Muskie Academy, you can sign up through
the website is where you would sign up.
MuskieWithAWaiAcademy.com is the website for that.
And there's just click enroll now and you'll be able to join that.
And I'll add you on Facebook and we'll put you in the private Facebook group as well.
But yeah, there's a lot of information there. I really, I guess that's one of

(32:32):
those things where do you want access to just about everything I know about
muskies and certainly the ability to ask me directly for anything you don't see there?
This is how you do it. And I think it's, it's, it's less than the cost of a
half day guide trip. It's probably about two thirds the cost of a half day guide trip.
And boy, I just, I think it's worth every penny. And that's what a lot of the
folks have been telling me.
So I, uh, I'm happy to help people catch muskies and that's,

(32:53):
uh, I think it's a great way to up your level, whether you're a new beginner,
beginner angler or somebody who's been around for a long time.
We've got a lot of guys in the group that have caught a lot of muskies and,
uh, and they seem to like it too. So, yeah.
I mean, even if you're so good, even if you're just looking to,
you know, learn a little bit about how to set up your electronics.
And all that stuff there's videos on all that stuff like yep
i mean absolutely honestly you could i don't even

(33:14):
know how long what's the total running length of all the videos do you have any idea
like right now it's pushing 30 hours okay 30
hours of 30 hours of videos and each year
we add more videos every year try to add about you know
our to a content every year is kind of our baseline and then
we add those we'll add those each year and like i say there's everything
in there there's electronic segments there's stuff on everything from

(33:35):
you know even clips on buying and rigging used boats
or what to look for to use boats some stuff that's a little bit more
you know not necessarily i wouldn't say obscure but you got a lot of
people you know if you're in that group and you're a muskie fisher you're probably gonna need to
buy a boat at some point and sometimes it's good and helpful i've
been around boats for a long time i've owned a lot of boats and there's
a lot of those things too that you can add in there but certainly the good
meat and potatoes of it is is certainly the the biology and the

(33:57):
in the learning of what these fish do when they do it
where they do it and how to catch them and pair that up with the weekly reports of
you know somebody who's on the water seven days a week pursuing
these fish that i think it's a really deadly combination to
really make you a better angler and help you put more fish in the bag couldn't agree
more so jeff i just want to thank you for taking time on
your out of your busy schedule you know like i said it's after 11 o'clock now

(34:19):
on a whatever wednesday tuesday night tuesday night i think i like much like
you i've lost track of most of my days i can't remember it's been a busy month
man absolutely in the best way possible yes 100 so i want to thank you for taking
time out of your schedule and,
you know, just kind of give us a rundown of, you know, the pit bull.
What your thoughts were on it.
Obviously I wouldn't, I wouldn't have you on if I thought they were going to be terrible.

(34:40):
So we knew, we knew they were going to be good, but you know,
just kind of your experiences with it, I guess, not so much your thoughts on
it. Cause I knew they were, I knew they were positive.
I mean, it didn't take long for, you know, people to get this bait in their
hand and get it out the, you know, in, in the, uh, in the fish's mouths real quick.
Like I saw, you know, a couple of people, I had early access to of the bait
because there was, I don't know how many total people, maybe there was 20,

(35:03):
25 different select guides between me and Brad that had them in their hands.
And I had pictures before opening day in the Northern zone because they went
to the UP and they caught a couple of fish on pit bulls early,
very early in the season.
So that was, that was awesome to see at that point, we knew that the,
you know, the gloves were off and we had a winner. And so very cool.

(35:23):
Thank you for your time, Jeff. Jeff, and I really appreciate it and good luck
or have, have yourself a nice off, you know, time during this 4th of July time,
Jeff won't be on the water, which is probably unusual, but very, very well deserved.
And I'm sure that you're very much looking forward to it.
Yeah, absolutely, man. Like today's actually by our wedding anniversary and
neither my wife or I have been so busy.

(35:45):
We didn't realize it until my mom sent us a text message in the middle of the
day. She's like, oh, happy anniversary, you two.
And my wife and I, she just laughed. She called me, laughed.
She's like, yeah, by the way, happy anniversary.
I forgot too. It was just kind of a, we've been in a, you know,
all life gets busy with kids and work and everything.
And we're looking forward to it. We always celebrate over 4th of July,
take a couple of days off and we go with our family and do some good stuff.

(36:06):
So I'm really excited for that too.
And then I'll be right back after it to it after the holiday weekend so
i'm looking forward to that too thanks for all your help as well jeff we appreciate everything you
know that you've done in muskie academy as well and and uh
and just in general getting this bait happening you and brad and i'm really
excited to see what it catches absolutely thanks again jeff yep thank you all

(36:29):
right last but not least on our Our pit bull infomercial podcast,
emergency pit bull infomercial podcast is Gus Manti, Suggs Fishing.
Many would also listen to his podcast, Muskie's on Tap.
Thank you, Gus, for taking time out of your schedule on what's now turning into
a 4th of July holiday weekend. We're past noon on Wednesday.

(36:53):
And, you know, thank you for taking time out of your schedule.
I'm sure there's other things you could do, whether it be fishing,
drinking beer, going boating, something that you could do other than talk muskie fishing with me.
Well thank you so much for having me on jeff i'd always
love chatting muskies and even if i wasn't on
here doing the podcast i'd be out probably musky fishing
but tasty beverage does sound pretty good right now it's finally getting to

(37:17):
80 up here and it's windy and and fishing's getting good yeah that's good well
let's talk about that to start with him that's something that we do on this
podcast from time to time is talk about what's going on in the water how has
the fishing been Ben will say for the past couple of weeks,
you know, I'm sure that things have, you know, fish are done spawning. We're through all that.
Oddly enough, like we should be looking at probably mid 70 water temperatures

(37:40):
by now, which I'm assuming we
are not. I know you were on the water this morning. What were you seeing?
So this morning, it was the morning after that, another shocker rain storm that
we had and big wind and cold snap.
And I was on a staying system and I still saw as cold as 65 and a half, 66 this morning.
And we could not get the fish moving until that sun poked out,

(38:04):
wind kicked up and the heat started and started seeing more like 67,
68 temps on some windy areas.
And that's what got it going but yeah it's been cold it's been very cold the
water's still cold and i've seen it maybe.
Reach over 73 times this season so just need just need a little heat yeah get

(38:25):
them fired up it's just insane like you know how the weather pattern is we talk
about weather a lot right as
musky anglers and anglers in general it's always about the weather right too
much rain not enough rain not enough heat too much heat you know too much wind
blah blah blah exactly and And we're looking at not enough heat,
too much rain, too much wind almost every single day.

(38:46):
And it has absolutely stalled out water temperatures from being what we'll say
in air quotes is normal, right?
I mean, it hasn't been normal ever, aside from the fact that,
you know, it hasn't. Nothing's been normal about it.
Ice came off early, then spring pretty much stalled out shortly after the ice was off.
So you were thinking, all right, it's going to be early spring.

(39:09):
Water temperatures will be good. and they'll get through the spawn quickly and
none of that happened as we anticipated it would because Brad and I had talked
about doing in the Backlash podcast,
talked about early springs and I told him, I'm like, as soon as we do that,
it's going to shift on us and it's not going to be early spring anyways.
And it's good that we didn't because it wasn't.
No not at all and funny enough like it's been just stalled out at like the 66 to,

(39:34):
maybe 70 degree range for a long time now
and the same thing kind of happened when the ice came off
early and the temps kind of shot up at one given time in the early spring and
i i swear the temps were like 50 to 53 for like an entire month it wouldn't
change when i was out slow mouth fishing and walleye fishing and it's like and

(39:56):
then they shot up again and then And now they're just sitting there.
And I think last year around this
time, we probably had more like 73 to 75 quarter temps on most places.
But I don't know. The fish are definitely a little moody with the colder temps.
I think it's just lowering their metabolism and they're eating less and their
height windows are shorter, but they're still, when they eat,

(40:19):
it seems like rubber baits, they're hitting them hard.
Unfortunately, bucktails, they've been very good for bites, but they've been
nipping and a lot of fish have been coming unpinned in my boat lately,
which has been very unfortunate.
Because some of the fish that have been eating bucktails have been pretty nice
sized and seeing them come unbuttoned is definitely unfortunate.

(40:44):
Where are you finding muskies these days? Are they holding in or around weeds?
Are they up shallow, break lines?
I don't want you to give away all your secrets. But for somebody that's looking
to get out to say this weekend, if they listen on this Friday,
when this is getting released, you know, where are they, where should they be looking first?
Well, I mean, I've still been kind of playing my cards for early season where

(41:04):
I'm looking for some warmer water.
And a lot of this big wind that we've been getting is pretty much pushing around
that warm water on the surface.
And I'm finding muskies all over the lakes, you know, north,
south, east, west side of the lakes.
And they're typical, you know, haunts of the lakes that I like to fish.
But it seems like the active ones or wherever there's the big chop going.

(41:26):
And for a little bit there, if you, you know, gave me a call,
maybe a week or two ago i would say definitely be checking a little open water
cribs rocks it's july i think third today and pretty much july first hit and
i saw a big big wave of fish,
on some of the uh shallow stain systems of

(41:48):
fish going back into the weeds heavily and
heavily using those outside weed edges not much
on the really really shallow weeds and a
lot of the fish that i mark on the outside of the weeds are
pretty grumpy so weed edges have
been key that are wind blown very good i
appreciate the information for anybody that listens to this you

(42:10):
know either friday when when it comes out or early part of
the weekend maybe they can put some of that to use so gus the
reason we're having this podcast is we're talking all about the release of the
pit ball and that's coming you know today if you're listening to this podcast
on release day be july 5th 9 a.m central time at both muskyinnovations.com and
teamrhinooutdoors.com as we talked earlier in the episode we talked to brad

(42:32):
ru he kind of broke down you know what colors he has available there
and we have a bunch at ours and you were one of the ones that had the early
opportunity to throw the pit bull around you know and quite honestly it took
you hardly any time from the time you had it to when you actually put a fish
in the net i want you to talk about your your first thoughts on it and maybe
like what makes it different than a regular bulldog?

(42:54):
Yeah. Yeah. I believe you, I don't remember the day of the week you sent it
to me, but I think it was the first time I actually put it in my boat and I
think I got one in the first hour, uh, working it pretty slowly.
And, and that was pretty cool. Sent you that picture, but I,
I've definitely liked the pit bull for the size of it. Big time.
I know there's been a lot of talk about like, if there's even an area between

(43:18):
a rag dog and a mag dog, but there definitely is.
I think it's going to fill, fill the gap of, of if somebody doesn't want to
throw a mag dog all day, cause it weighs less than a mag dog,
but it just seems like it still pushes quite a bit of water and.
Also i like the the fact that they kind

(43:39):
of added that little extra head weight i know you didn't go in
the middle for size or for weight on it
and you made it a little bit heavier and i've noticed
that out of any of the bulldogs i've bought
over the years the pit bull is probably one.
Of the first where i took it out of the package started using
it and liked the way it went without having to

(44:00):
do any bending of the head or anything like
that because it's a pro harness and and it actually
has quite quite a bit of hop with that
heavier head and that's that's the best part
that i i like about it yeah it's it's like
i said i think i might have said it earlier when we're talking to brad i mean
it's you know size wise it's different but it also has

(44:20):
a bit a bit different action than what your typical bulldog would
have especially like um you know one thing i noticed
and you know brad hoppy and i had talked about it is like it's
got some side to side depending upon how if you
don't do a you know a traditional pull pause on it
which still works great but if you kind of snap it on
a slack line you can get it to kind of shoot you know left
to right a little bit almost like a a little bit of a glide bait

(44:43):
not it doesn't you know give you a full glide bait action but it'll
definitely you know dart a little bit side to side
did you see much of that when you're playing with it yeah definitely saw a bunch
of side to side action that was like i said when when i said like it's the first
pull dog i pull out a package and i didn't have to do anything to it and it
ran great what i definitely was kind of meaning by that is that it did dart left and right.

(45:07):
I like to see that out of baits. It's the same thing I like to see out of,
you know, wooden dive and rise baits. I like to see them kind of dart left and
right, give them different actions, you know, triggering aspects to the bait.
And it runs true as well. You could, I could rip it pretty darn hard and you

(45:27):
really can't blow it out of the water. It stays down.
That's what that heavier head is kind of doing. and you
can run it pretty shallow and I've tried
putting some heavy heads on it a little bit but I haven't really
been fishing super super deep water lately so
but I could see that coming into play later in
the year I have to ask you did you

(45:48):
have many clients throw it or not I was
just curious what their reaction to it was like if they you know
how were they able to throw it all day because like part of
the reason we wanted is we want like you talked about we want a larger of profile bait
but we also wanted you know
something that people could throw all day long we're hoping we hit that mark
with this bait and i personally think we did but i don't know i guess i would

(46:09):
say like i'm a little more hardcore on the musky angler side so throwing a mag
dog all day long for me isn't too bad but i certainly i certainly like throwing
the pit bull all day long a little bit better what did your clients have to
say about it if you in fact put it in their hands.
So I have not done that yet because I haven't gotten back on a good rubber bite
lately, but this wind and heat is, it's happening right now for sure.

(46:33):
I'm definitely going to get it in the hands of some clients.
And, you know, of course, getting there, I have clients that maybe don't have
the ability to throw rubber quite a bit.
So that has played a factor as well. But I definitely think it's going to be
much, much easier than throwing a mag dog for sure.

(46:56):
I mean, I'm a big fan of the reg dogs. I always was before this pit bull came out.
But I know that I was probably missing out on some bites because of its size.
And I think the pit bull will kind of fill that gap of clients throwing that
over some weeds and deeper weed edges this summer.
And my last question i would have for you gus is

(47:16):
i know many rubber i don't
know we'll use experts or aficionados or
however you want to say it they like to make some sort
of like it seems like they're always tinkering with something whether it be
weight or hooks or whatever did you make
any adjustments from stock on this one because it's come stock with it
must add five odd hooks but like i said i

(47:37):
know that many you know rubber guys they're it seems like they rarely keep things
stock what did you see there so i ran it right out of the box right away exactly
how it is and that's how it got chewed initially but i did have to cut hooks
and i didn't have any five.
Mustads laying around so i actually put on six on both of them and i didn't

(48:00):
see any issues with hanging up on the bait as long as you thumb the spool enough
to let it lay true on your cast i I saw no issues.
It wasn't getting hung up and the bait still ran great, you know,
because I know sometimes you got to be careful if you're upsizing hooks on certain
baits, they don't run the same.

(48:20):
I would say that's more so for crankbaits. But fortunately with the pit bull
running those six thoughts, actually, I didn't see a negative change to the lure.
And I feel like with having that, you have a little bit wider gap to get around,
you You know, the body of the bait, when a fish grabs it a little better hooking percentage.

(48:41):
And I think that's something that I'm going to kind of implement them,
all the pit bulls that I use.
And like I said earlier, I, I for sure will be using heavy heads in situations
where I'm fishing deeper.
But when I'm fishing these shallow stain systems, I, I don't need a bait running
much deeper than three, four feet down in the column.

(49:01):
So running a heavy head and ripping it in the top four feet would be a little
difficult but i know the deeper weeds and some of the clearer systems that i'll be going to is,
definitely going to come in handy throwing a heavy head on there and i know the mag dog size.
Heavy head that musky innovations puts out fits perfectly
on the pit bull very cool because that's one

(49:24):
thing i definitely did not try out at all for sure so that's
good information you know so gus let's talk a little bit about your guide service
we talked about how fishing has been going if somebody wants to get in touch
with you or you also have a podcast too which gets probably more listeners than
this tro podcast because it's probably more consistent but let's once you

(49:44):
give the listeners a little idea where they can find more about you?
Yeah, you can find my guide service, www.sugsfishing.com. It's spelled S-U-G-S fishing.
And also on Facebook and Instagram, usernames are Sugs Fishing as well.
If you want to get in touch to book a trip, I got some openings yet in the later summer.

(50:07):
It's looking a little thin there, but fall, I do have a bunch of openings and I always love fall.
I don't want to get too ahead of myself because I love summer too,
but we've got some really good fall dates available yet.
And you can reach me at 920-264-3816.
And you can also find our podcast, which is Muskies on Tap.

(50:30):
That's on Spotify and Apple. Anything you're listening to for Jeff's podcast,
TRO or Backlash, it's the same places you can find ours.
And we have an Instagram account as well for Muskies on Tap,
which is just at Muskies on Tap. So, yeah.
Last question is, Gus, we have a new grandma color that may or may not be on

(50:53):
the website by the time you hear this podcast.
But its name is Gus. us. And so it seems like you had a little bit of success
with that one already, huh?
Yeah. Yeah, I did. I appreciate you for making that color. It's a really good one.
It's kind of got like that whitefish Cisco color and it's got just a little
bit of the orange belly, really good gold flash on the sides.

(51:18):
And you sent me a couple to just take a peek at and and put the 13-inch gram
out for a troll literally the next day.
Actually, the day that I got it and got one in the bag in the first 45 minutes.
So I'd say it works. Definitely works.
Well, it's funny. The back story to it is, so Gus was, I reach out to a lot

(51:41):
of guides when it comes time to looking for color suggestions.
And so I reach out to Gus. I'm like, is there anything you'd like to see?
He sends me this very crude picture of, it was a grandma, I think,
that you doctored up, right?
Or a friend of yours doctored up or whatever.
Yeah, it was a grandma that I bought off of Facebook, a really old,
I don't even know if it was like a show color, custom, like way,

(52:04):
way, I think it was an old one.
And I liked it, but nothing was happening. So I put all this holographic tape
on it myself, and it looked all kind of junky in that way.
But it just started getting bit a ton on sunny days.
Trolling, having that holographic tape was huge, huge having the gold and yeah
that's that's I just was tinkering around to get that one done.

(52:29):
Well, we went straight to the source. We got it. It's not so,
we'll call it junky to use your words anymore.
It looks pretty stock now, but obviously the transfer over looked good.
So very cool. Happy to, you know, use your name for that one and your color for that bait.
So if anybody wants to go check out Gus in the grandma bait lineup and it's,
it's been Gus approved already. So very cool.

(52:50):
So Gus, you know, I just want to thank you for taking time out of your schedule
on a 4th of July holiday weekend. I hope that you have a great holiday weekend,
long weekend. Do you get to get on the water while you're out?
Are you guiding this weekend or are you like most guides, you take off?
I do have one trip this weekend. We're going out for a half day on the day of the new moon.

(53:11):
Otherwise, the rest of the weekend's for family and friends and doing a little
golfing and maybe doing a little fishing ourselves if we have the time for it.
But yeah, we'll definitely be getting out, taking a few days off for sure.
Yeah that sounds great well Gus want to thank you and I want to thank all of
our listeners for putting up with us for another episode and I'd love to tell

(53:33):
you we're going to have one again next Monday but since I just put this one
on a Friday we'll probably be skipping Monday hopefully I'll be back to my regularly
scheduled Monday releases here soon there was a graduation party and some other stuff going on in my,
past that was just taking up way too much of my time to get additional podcasts
out so we'll get back to that here pretty soon I want to thank everybody

(53:54):
for listening hope everybody has a great 4th of July weekend like I said 4th
of July is over it's the 5th but hope you guys all have a great weekend and good luck fishing.
