(00:14):
Hello and welcome to another action-packed episode of that
90s Premier League podcast. What are we on episode 16?
Right to ask, didn't I? You did?
Yeah, but I think we do. We do so many episodes now,
Jonesy. I mean, it's, it's difficult to
keep track of our of our catalogue of episodes.
So yeah, how you doing mate? Good, good.
(00:37):
Like I'm saying, this is my favourite time of the week.
Talk 90s Powell, Woody, how are you?
Very well. Thanks mate.
Yeah, I thought we'd, we're trying to do you know what,
cling on to football now it's inthe summer and it's becoming
sparser and sparser in terms of what's out there.
Club World Cups not doing anything for me.
(00:59):
You know, signings and stuff like that aren't happening at
the moment because everyone's onholiday.
People are reporting back for pre season.
We're in a little bit of a lull, aren't we mate?
I. Was going to say with that lull
period, isn't it where it's justlike, OK, that's all right, we
keep going, don't we? It's all right, it's going to be
all right. What are we talking about today,
mate? Summer signing memories.
(01:24):
Go mate, sing your song. No summer.
Summer, you know it's. All right.
We could have done it in like proper like Harmony then like
123. No, it would it's summer
signings in there. I mean it's like the probably
the best part of a of a dry summer is who goes where.
(01:47):
You know the rumour mill how much clubs are spending, right?
Yeah, absolutely. Those teletext memories which
you'll get into my memories of being on holidays, opening the
newspaper. Yeah.
And going what spot? On yeah, getting the newspaper
from the local newsagents, looking at the Backpage and
(02:08):
going Oh my God being. Stuck in a caravan in Cornwall.
Because, well, but you, you didn't have like, I'm going to
say I'm so old you didn't have mobile phones.
And when you're on holiday, likeyou didn't have a lot of telly
either, did you? So a.
Little a little TV in the cornerwhich had no teletext and you
exactly just starved. Yeah, so you had to rely on like
(02:32):
communication via paper. Not many of us had pigeon mail.
So yeah, we, we had to rely on those things.
And do you think like in all honesty mate, do you think the
transfer activity was a lot busier back in the 90s?
I think so, yeah. I think there's a lot more
(02:53):
chatter in the end of May heading into June for my
research as well. Yeah, Busy, busy, busy.
But you think about teams now, like back in the sort of like
the 90's, the there was a whole sheet squad change of players of
insurance and out wasn't there. And I mean, now you're lucky to
see maybe four or five in the door, let alone sort of a couple
(03:13):
from a club. Because in research we've done
like I've seen like it looked like a like a Burger King menu.
There was so much stuff like crazy.
Yeah, which we'll get into, aren't we?
Yes. All right, what are you wearing?
What am I wearing? Well, I'm Alan Shearer today.
There you go. Summer spinings.
(03:35):
Hey, there he is. Did you know I didn't tell you I
was wearing this today? That's clever, right?
For those of you that aren't watching on YouTube, one, why
the hell not? And two, I'll forgive you.
I'm. I'm wearing the Newcastle.
(03:56):
I always get this one mixed up. Is this 94 to 96 or 95 to 97?
95 to 97. 95 to 97. So yeah, paying homage to Alan
Shearer once again with this shirt.
Newcastle's best home shirt ever, in my opinion.
What do you think, Jamesy? I agree.
Yeah, Yeah. Big fan of that one.
(04:17):
Yeah. I feel very PJ and Duncan today
as well with my hat on back withlike a Grove Jonesy.
What are you wearing, mate? I am wearing the Aston Villa
away 199798, also known as the Collymore.
There we go. Yeah, love this shirt.
(04:40):
We were saying this off air, weren't we?
Yeah, yeah, it's one of my favourites, I reckon from, I
don't know. And it's just like so kind of
drilled to yeah, that signing ofCollymore, like, yeah, think of
that this shirt, you think of that signing because there was a
few back then who it'd be like anew kit reveal with new signing.
(05:01):
Yeah, clever. Yeah, I like it.
Very clever. Yeah.
Do you know, it's, it's really boring now, isn't it?
A lot of players, because they can't advertise the kit.
Now a lot of players are doing, they're focusing more on the
reveal of the transfer as a video, Yeah, I think.
But the players wearing a training top?
(05:21):
What on earth is? That I think Liverpool's 2
latest signings they're in obviously be last season's.
Yeah, I don't like that. I know they've obviously got
deals with the other manufacturers and stuff, but
they spend way too much time on doing the transfer reveal video
and making it look different than actually just holding up a
(05:43):
kit and going. I'm sorry.
Yeah. You know, that's what we want.
That's it. Yeah, yeah, that's what we want.
Game's gone, mate. All right, you got a stat for me
this way. I do right that.
Music. All right.
(06:04):
Excellent. What?
Do we got so my facts of the week.
Newcastle United 9798 were the Premier League's biggest
spenders during the 90s, splashing out over 24,000,000
lbs. Some of the players that they
signed were Gary Speed, Pistoni,Ian Rush, John Barnes, Shay
(06:28):
Given, John Dow, Thomason, NicosDavis as Stuart Pierce Kept,
Spyer Gryphon amongst some otherplayers.
How many players are they signed?
And that all came under 25,000,000.
Geez. Now obviously that was Champions
(06:49):
League season for the tune. They obviously made the FA Cup
final that season, but they finished 13th in the league
after spending all that. That just tells you you can't
buy a squad and expect them to take off, can you?
No, no, totally right. Yeah, I remember that.
Yeah. It was just weird.
It was Kenny Dalglish then, wasn't it, Uncle?
(07:11):
Kenny Dalglish But you think look at all these great players
they had there like Gary Speed, Ian Rush, John Barnes, Stuart
Pearce, like Inc. That was the home front where at
Newcastle that season. Is it?
I mean, yeah, because I haven't got a fight.
I mean, there we go. I knew you're always doing it.
(07:32):
Look at that. How weird it looked.
Those two players in a Newcastleshirt it.
Was almost but it was weird seeing Ian Rush in a Leeds shirt
and Sheffield United. Of course, that's Sheffield
United 1 I completely forgot until I saw it was shared and I
was. What?
(07:53):
Yeah, it's almost as though, like Liverpool should have said
to Ian Rush, Right? Shave your head, take off that
moustache and now you can leave because everything.
Rush wore it just like he shouldhave been in the Liverpool kit.
Because he ended up, I mean, he ended up like Chester Wrexham
ended up in Australia for a little bit as well.
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it didn't look right, did it?
(08:14):
I mean, even John Barnes wearinga Newcastle kit was a bit weird.
Barnes in a Charlton shirt. Like I saw that yeah, recently
as well. That's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But that's my start of the week, mate.
Excellent Newcastle spending. Excellent.
You're welcome. All right.
Let's get onto it. There you go.
(08:34):
So this is the Prem pod call site back in the old I said I
made this one. So yeah, back in the old days.
We used to see Club, yeah. And this one's I've just, I've
just made-up like you'd see there, you'd go on there.
Like for example, this one. Chelsea Maldini no go Anatom,
(08:56):
anatom fit. Remember things like that,
Darren and. Yeah, so just tell me and and
some of the listeners that mightnot know about sea facts tell us
how this kind of worked mate from this home screen.
So what would people have had tohave done to get to this bit?
So this was on a teletext page 152 and you'd come up as an
(09:17):
advert. Well, I think it was club call
back then, wasn't it? And they'll just put the most,
you know, young Jonesy got sucked in, you know, a trip to
the phone box and stuff. I mean, you can see people who
are watching on on YouTube and stuff.
You can see some of the rubbish I've put on here, you know,
Arsenal parlour on intermove. So this is like the example.
(09:40):
Southampton Banali to Real Madrid Forest Van Hoydong Happy,
Yeah. So these were.
Angry so. They would have the headlines
would have been there to draw you in and then would you have
had to have like you can't, you couldn't have like gone down
with an arrow. Could you have to press the
numbers? Or this one is just an advert as
(10:00):
I go and pay. Yeah, so it's a 50 PA minute,
right? Yeah.
So Jonesy would run to the phonebox. 50 PA minute.
Oh man. They'll talk slow as well.
Yeah, have called and. Yes, Darren Anderson.
Are we are? But yeah, just kind of be trying
(10:23):
to be trying to be funny like Celtic Mcstay or Go, things like
that. It used to be like catchy,
catchy headlines. I'll tell you what, they would
suck you in. Can you remember any of them
specifically club call? Yeah, the Heskey to Liverpool
One, which ended up being true. Yeah, I think that one, that one
was actually true. So hang on a minute, you you
(10:45):
went to the phone box on a rumour.
Yeah mate, won't mess around. You didn't actually have, you
didn't have like a concrete transfer like Liverpool sign
today, Emma Hefke from Leicester.
You went on a rumour mill. Yeah, unbelievable.
Yeah, that's how you got sucked in back then.
(11:05):
It's just like, oh, you'd see itflash up on club call or team
talk and you're like going to find out.
I'm going to find out more. But by the time you put your
coins in, it's kind of game overbecause you're running out.
Yeah. It looks so busy on that screen,
doesn't it? But at the same time it looks so
right, yeah, like the colours and just the layout of
(11:26):
everything. It just.
That's it. They knew what they were doing.
Yeah, they love it. Memories.
All right, cool. So well, I think we're going to
just touch on season by season. I just like little.
All right, so 9293. So Jonesy's made a little bit of
other you go. It's 90s podcast Football C
facts page. Is that T9P?
(11:49):
BBC copyright Wicked. All right.
So yeah, I don't know if you cansee that bottom one I've made.
Mate, this feels like an eye test to me at the moment.
It's like, is it clearer? We're all right so we're that.
I'll read. Them out so we can just have
like a little talking point. So yeah, go on summer transfers.
(12:10):
We've got Robic seal 3.5 millionshare of swoop.
Yep, Yep. Saunders pool star set for villa
move legion and it's set for Rd castle 2,000,000 this week.
Team circle around spurs. Paul Stewart, Nottingham Forest
star sharing a move close This one I made-up just Sheffield
United to seal Chris Waddle deals soon.
(12:32):
How dare you. I'm so glad I can't read that.
Actually, leads were leads were close.
I found an article which I can'tremember but leads were close to
getting them before Sheffield Wednesday swigged in.
I think Trevor Francis was quitea kind of benefactor behind all
(12:55):
this, I think because of obviously his European and
English history. So maybe that kind of drove him
to to Wednesday. But it would a little weird,
wouldn't it, seeing him in a Leeds kit.
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I'm just going back
then. Like Manchester United, they
lost out to Shearer. Yeah, they lost out to Paul
(13:16):
Stewart. They were after Paul Stewart as
well. He went to Liverpool.
And then you've just got things in the paper like Manchester
United are ready to bid 2.5 million for Andy Townsend.
Like Ferguson was like, I gotta find someone.
But if you think about Jack Walker's project at Blackburn at
that time, he knew he wanted to build a team for Dalglish,
didn't he? And obviously he knew at that
(13:37):
point he had to spend it. Yeah.
And in order to do that, he bought the right players at the
right time. And I think Alan Shearer is
probably one of the biggest transfer swoops for Blackburn
and Premier League at that point.
It was incredible. Yeah, absolutely.
Like it's suicide. I like Leeds for David Rowe
Castle because. Yeah, I find that odd.
(14:00):
Wanted to build on, obviously that championship winning team
with that money. George Graham wanted to buy Jeff
Thomas for 2.5 million, which didn't happen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, Jeff Thomas was quite a
main feature in the England teamat that point, wasn't he?
At Palace? Yeah, yeah.
So yeah, it's interesting because Roe Castle was a big fan
(14:20):
favourite Arsenal, wasn't he? Yeah, he was.
Yeah, absolutely. Weird move.
So make sure, I think the Series1 was the yeah, the biggest one
that that kind of for a new Premier League created.
Yeah, I guess that was just the the big signing they needed,
didn't they? Yeah, yeah.
You got anything on that season?Well, I think the the biggest
(14:42):
one for me obviously was the kind of the influx of because we
we touched on it and we were thePremier League 9293 on a
previous episode. Yeah.
And not only was this obviously the creation of the Premier
League, it was the fact that we had a lot of international
players coming in off the back of EUR 92.
Obviously Chris Waddle joined him from Marseille, John Jensen,
(15:06):
Arsenal. So we've had quite a big influx
of I say quite a big influx. I think it was where it started
to become an international market because obviously the
Premier League was becoming bigger.
But I think it's quite refreshing to see the British
players still had that kind of recognition with the big money
moves. Yeah, from that season, like the
(15:28):
lot of the Alan Shearers and stuff.
Yeah, like right Hound and goingto obviously right Haven't going
to Villa you've got. Yeah.
Stuart Ripley going to Blackburn, he was a big part of
the team. Yeah.
Tell you what there was Chelsea bought a lot of players tell
you. But he there was no, like,
(15:49):
telling on how successful the Premier League would have been
at that point. I mean, it was a it was a hell
of a gamble, really, to kind of start throwing money.
I know obviously Sky kind of pumped a lot of money into it
and clubs were becoming a bit more affluent, but no one really
knew the Premier League was going to be as big as it is now
at that point. It was a hell of a gamble.
(16:10):
Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, who knows?
But yeah. Cool.
All right, let's move on to the next season.
So this one I was obviously dominated by Roy Keane going to
Manchester United. Yeah, yeah, crazy.
Three points time. So yeah, I've got United seal
(16:30):
3.75 bean deal, Julian Dicks going to Liverpool, Leeds to
sign, David White, another Paul Stewart, Man City circle around
Paul Stewart. It's just going to be Paul
Stewart everywhere. Then he ended up going to
Tottenham in the end. Paul Stewart?
No, he was at, he was at Tottenham, went to Liverpool.
(16:52):
Tottenham and then yeah. Yeah, yeah, non info * Cloughs.
So Nigel Clough going to Liverpool.
Razor is edging closer to that Liverpool deal.
Obviously. Neil Braddock going to Liverpool
as well from Tottenham. Yeah.
So I suppose this was stemmed around Forrest's relegation from
the Premier League, didn't they?I mean, yeah, you've got Clough
(17:14):
going to Liverpool, King going to United, obviously sharing
them at Tottenham as a bit of a mass exorus there in terms of
their kind of core of their team, wasn't it really?
Yeah, absolutely. Like with the Roy Kane 1.
So Blackburn and Arsenal were interested.
I got Forest angry Rovers over talks with Doug Lee.
(17:36):
So Rovers spoke to Roy Kane without Forest knowing him.
So they got pissed off with Blackburn.
So that was the kind of end of that.
But there's other stories for that deal as well.
There always seems to be at thispoint, because I read a lot
about these sort of things and obviously for the pod today, but
Blackburn and Arsenal seem to bealways the kind of front runners
(17:57):
in the early 90s to sign players, didn't they?
But they never ended up getting them.
And that's why I always kind of think, why did the players snub
by Arsenal? Because if, if I were a player
in the 90s, I would probably have looked at a team like
Arsenal to have had a bit more success.
They had a good cup run, European Cup.
They won the league a few times before it was the Prem.
(18:20):
So I want to know what kind of steals the deal for these
players to sort of like gamble and go to Blackburn and you
know. Sweetness, wasn't it?
Must be house. Yeah, it must have been.
But you don't hear about all that sort of stuff, do you?
And that's what I find so interesting about like, I know
(18:40):
Roy Keane, like just going to Man United was the perfect fit
for him. Yeah, yeah.
Like you couldn't imagine under Alex Ferguson.
Yeah, yeah. It's just a a real kind of easy
transfer, isn't it? Well, so we got on there.
So we've got Razor Ruddock as well.
Yeah, so he Razor Ruddock goes to, goes to Liverpool.
(19:02):
What did you think of Liverpool at that time though?
Because obviously they had. Still, that transition isn't it?
I mean, but they. They had some big players there,
didn't they? Yeah, they did.
Let me just have a look at. So 9394 season, Yeah, I think it
was a bit of a get it working bit of a transition because we
(19:24):
what who signed, we signed Julian Dix as well.
Yeah, she had soon ass at the helm then.
Soon. Yeah, right.
Yeah, It wasn't much. Now Julian Dicks.
Yeah, that's it pretty much thatsummer.
Yeah, I just find that like quite strange because Liverpool
kind of fell behind a bit, didn't they?
(19:46):
Yeah, they relied a lot on the youth team coming through,
obviously with McManaman and Fowler and.
Paul Stewart got shipped off to Crystal Palace.
Yeah, poor old Stewart. He went from Backpage headlines
in the first season. Yeah, so like 9394 just getting
(20:06):
shipped out Crystal Palace. Yeah, crazy, right?
Yeah, but yeah, interesting season, Not yeah.
Go on. Do you think the 9394 season
then was a bit more of a relaxing window because of the
Premier League success the year before?
Yeah, I think so. Just looking at there wasn't too
(20:28):
much. I mean, looking at Sheffield
Wednesday, you've got Des Walker.
Yeah. From Stan Dora Simpson.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's so you're not to big
players. I mean, again though, that's off
the back of a good European season.
(20:50):
Well, I say good European being in Europe and then the good cup
runs. So I think Sheffield Wednesday
kind of made a name for themselves in the 9293 thirties
and even they didn't win anything.
I found a thing in Shoot magazine in August.
They've just got kind of a feature on dodgy transfer
stories. So you've got one from June from
(21:11):
the Sunday Mirror. Desperate Des Walker could plan
his dream move back to England, going to Liverpool.
There you go. This would look so weird.
Sheffield Wednesday is set to pull up a sensational double
coupe that will bring Des Walkerand David Platt from Italy.
Wow. Yeah, Nick Barbie to Manchester
(21:35):
United, AC Milan bid 8 million for gigs.
But Platt obviously was signed by Barry.
Wasn't he a few seasons before that from Villa for it was like
8 and a half million which was incredible money.
Yeah, and then you've just got like, they've got an article
here from the Daily Sport, Like Roy Keane will be a 4,000,000
(21:56):
lbs Blackburn Rose play this weekend.
Maradona is on the verge of joining Birmingham City.
That What on earth is that aboutDaily sport night?
Badly weird guys for you that are listening or watching, if
you have any interesting transfer rumours for your club
at that time, let us know because I absolutely love these
(22:20):
ones. And being able to like picture
Des Walker in a Liverpool kit, like it would just alter history
for me because he was such a massive like defender for us,
like and stayed with the club through thick and thin.
And he was a great player for Forest.
Obviously returned to Forest in the latter part of his career,
but to get him from Sam Doria when again he was an England
(22:42):
defender, a massive piece of business for Sheffield
Wednesday, isn't it? I mean, obviously we had Viv
Anderson, we had Paul Walhurst, Nigel Pearson as centre backs to
Sheffield Wednesday the season before.
So to be able to, and obviously Calton Palmer could do a job
there, but to be able to get DesWalker in, that's incredible.
(23:07):
Yeah, there must have been such a hype around Wednesday at that
point. Good piece of business, so.
Yeah, very much so. All right, let's go. 9495.
It's a big headline. Klansman signs the Spurs.
I'll say we did that one on the Foreign Legion episode, didn't
we? Yeah, Yeah.
And then I've just got other Yeah, Rovers smash transfer
(23:28):
record for Sutton Forest, sweep for Dutch striker Brian Roy,
Palace circle around Paul Stewart line.
Let's keep Paul Stewart 's podcast in Stefan Swartz move
Petresco, Petresco all set for Wednesday transfer.
I think it was a good start. Big signing as well.
(23:49):
Yeah, I mean, wasn't he? Yeah, that that season we got
Ian Nolan and Petrescu, both right backs in because I said to
you before off there we had a mass exodus in the 93, the 9495
season at Sheffield Wednesday. I'll give you a list of some of
the players that left, right. So obviously we've got Petrescu,
(24:09):
Nolan, I think we brought in Atherton.
We had Lee Briscoe coming in from the youth team.
So we started bringing some defence in but Carlton Palmer
left, Nigel Pearson left, Nigel Worthington left, Jemsen left,
Phil King to Aston Villa, RolandNielsen left and obviously
(24:35):
Trevor Francis retired. But from a kind of an
experienced team, and I looked at the ages of these players,
most of these were still early 30s, so they still could have
offered a bit more. I wonder if Trevor Francis kind
of looked at that squad. And when we need Youngblood, we
need that to sort of come in andrefreshen up the team.
(24:57):
Yeah. And a bit more attacking.
So it's a hell of a gamble for that season.
Incredible. And yeah, and I've got a back,
oh, like an article here as well.
Alex Ferguson last night pointedthe thing about Blackburn
robbers for sending the transfermarket crazy.
The Manchester manager insisted the club will never get into a
(25:20):
multi £1,000,000 war with the new money bags of British
football. Oh, how was he wrong there?
You go. So Kenny Dalgliesh took his
spending to 25,000,000 in 2 1/2 years with the 5 million Chris
Sutton purchase. So back then, jeez.
But that effectively mate, it bought them the league didn't
(25:40):
they? And I don't mean it as in they
bought the league, but that AlanShearer, Chris Sutton upfront
was probably, I know we've spokeabout it like before, but
probably one of the most formidable partnerships in
Premier League history. Yeah, strike force wise.
And again, you pay the money. There you go.
That's it. And there's another transfer
rumour here about Paul Kitson. Yeah, apparently he was wanted
(26:04):
by Sheffield Wednesday, Liverpool, Everton, Leeds,
Manchester City all looking after Paul Kitson.
I'd love to because, well, 9495 S, yeah.
Would that have been and the Coles kind of era where he
started taking over and then they started to introduce
Lesford and and and stuff? So maybe Paul Kittson was
(26:25):
falling out of favour, wouldn't he?
Yeah and yeah, Liverpool linked for obviously a new defence with
John Scales and Bill Bap as wellFashion who went to Aston Villa.
On that point, right you've you've teed me up perfectly.
Thank you for that Daisy John fashion.
Who? A Wooga, Right, A Wooga.
I did not know this about John Fashion, who?
(26:47):
Well, I kind of didn't, kind of didn't.
So John Fashion whose transfer in the summer of 1994 to Aston
Villa was for 1.35 million. What I didn't know, and it felt
like Fashion who was at Aston Villa for ages, but he only
played thirteen games. He scored three goals and
(27:07):
unfortunately was in a nasty tackle with Ryan Giggs in 1995
which damaged his lead knee ligaments, so much so that he
had to retire through injury. Now that's quite a sad ending
for the Premier League striker because I always thought he was
more Aston Villa than Wimbledon as a kid.
(27:30):
But obviously he then hit the back pages and the front pages
for all the wrong reasons because he was involved in the
allegations of match fixing withHans Sager's and Bruce Grobola,
obviously subsequently all cleared.
But for a Premier League strikerto be such a prolific striker, I
mean he wasn't favoured that much for England because he was
(27:52):
voted in like the worst sort of starting eleven of all time.
But yeah, I just thought that was quite odd really, mate, to
go from because I would say Wimbledon to Villa at that point
was quite a step up for him really.
Yeah, agree. Well, I've got there's a little
article on him actually now you know, So this was June 1994,
John Fashion, who is losing money playing football and could
(28:14):
quit next season. So the tough Wimbledon strike.
So he's at Wimbledon who sees football as a secondary, a
secondary to his business interests.
Said he can't keep up playing football as a an expensive
hobby. He now only plays part time in
between Jan to Africa on a number of business deals.
Bash the bash who earns apparently 2000 lbs a goal.
(28:38):
Wow 300,000 LB salary claims he lost a lot of money when he had
to fly back to the Don clash of Everton.
He now considers himself a 35% footballer, 65% businessman.
Wow, Well, there you go mate. I mean, yeah.
Football's that. Football's an expensive hobby,
so you go fashion. Oh.
Wow. OK.
(28:58):
What I also didn't know was though that because, well, he
always seemed very intelligent and very kind of astute, didn't
he? In terms of his his kind of
stuff he did outside of football.
But that just goes to show them that obviously after that
tackle, he weren't bothered sortof coming back.
(29:19):
And, you know, he did see it as a hobby, which is a shame.
There was another, there was another transfer that I saw.
I know this is really random, but I want to talk about Steve
Guppy. OK.
Do you remember him playing for Leicester?
Yes. Did you know he was signed by
(29:40):
Newcastle in 199495? No.
That he was signed by Newcastle in the season 199495 for 200,000
from Wickham Wanderers. OK.
He made no appearances for the club and was subsequently then
(30:02):
sold to Port Vale until 1997 where he was then picked up by
Leicester. But what I'm really interested,
this is probably the most random1 so forgive me listeners,
because everyone's like Steve Guppy.
Obviously Steve Guppy went on toplay for England at times in the
late 90s we had a few games under the Peter Taylor kind of
regime, didn't he? So I find it really odd to kind
(30:26):
of see these transfers happen and I want to know like you pay
200 grand for a player but you don't play him in the squad,
like what happens? What went wrong?
Do you know what's a strange one?
I didn't even know about that one.
I had a deep dive that's very. Interesting because he was a but
he was a a very good kind of wing back winger, the
(30:47):
traditional kind of winger, wasn't he?
I remember Leicester, yeah. But yeah, he was loved by Martin
O'Neill. But yeah, I just thought that
was a bit of an odd one. But I just started doing a bit
of a deep dive. When I looked into transfers and
I saw he was coming in. I thought I recognised that
name. He's weird.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, like, even Tottenham,
that sign, I mean, they signed Klinsmann, yeah, signed Georgie
(31:09):
Pescu, Demi Pescu. Yeah.
I laughed at this one. They signed Ellen Padu from
Charlton, Did they? It did.
I think he played. But yeah, that's an interesting
one. They signed in June.
I did not know that. From Charlton Athletic.
Yeah, I was just going through it and I was just like, oh,
Ellen Padu. You might as well.
(31:29):
I thought you were going to say Alan.
Partridge, that's weird. Yeah, that's a strange one.
But yeah, obviously Spurs I think just went off the World
Cup 94 with those 3 signings. And obviously we go through the
kind of obviously after a tournament, the influence they
(31:53):
had on. Yeah, You know, like we said
before on a podcast, like a freescouting, Yeah, session isn't it
for the teams as well, EUR 96, World Cup 98 with some of the
teams like the players they buy.Amicacci to Everton was another
one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so they were big players because it was, it was a shop
window, wasn't it? The World Cup?
(32:15):
Yeah, but you've. Got Phil about Phil about Baer
to Newcastle, Mark Hottier as well.
Yeah, so. Yeah, you're right.
It's just such a shop window. Basically, it's funny, isn't it?
Because you see, like, obviouslyin the 2002 World Cup, Senegal
were very much a team where theygot so far in the tournament.
(32:36):
Everyone then started buying thesort of Celif Diao and Al Hajduf
and the Papadi Op and Allius these day, all of these players
that are coming into the PremierLeague.
And it was very similar to like how USA 94 with like Romania,
because then like Petrescu, Dimitrescu, like like Popescu,
they all started coming over. Yeah.
(32:57):
And I think that's where PremierLeague, so I think they kind of
found their feet 92 to kind of 94 and then they started then
looking at international, right? How can we create this bigger
fan base and introduce the Premier League to the world?
So you can kind of see the Premier League's business model
here, can't you, in terms of howthey encourage the international
(33:19):
transfers to come and make this league better?
Because obviously the 90s was very much dominated by Italian
football, wasn't it? With like Syria had most of the
bigger players. But you can see the effort from
some of the clubs like in these transfer windows, which is
really interesting. Absolutely cool.
But yeah, good season, good window.
(33:39):
All right, let's go on to your. Favourite season, wasn't it?
Yeah yeah, 119495 yeah, all right, so 9596 Arsenal Seal 7.5.
Million Bergkamp Swoop. Yeah.
Liverpool in talks over Collymore deal that been a
Liverpool fan. I don't know if it was that's
that's summer that Col that Colin Moore deal seemed to go on
(34:00):
for ever. I can't remember it.
Nah, it's just yeah. How many 50 PS did that cost
you? Yeah, I just, I don't know, just
literally like stalling, but yeah.
And I was happy. He's down the phone booth again,
just trying the deal. Colin Moore.
So 9596 so you've got 5 million plat Gunners signing is close
(34:23):
obviously David Platt Spurs set to sign 4.5 million for Chris
Armstrong Kagan delight in Les Fernand transfer middles were
set to sign Bombay in record move so teams are breaking
their. Records, yeah, in that, I mean,
June alone, Dennis Bergkamp 7.5,Collymore 8.5.
(34:44):
Like, we're starting to raise the bar here, people, Yeah.
Yeah, we are. Yeah, absolutely.
Especially Arsenal making a statement with David Platt and
Bergkamp. Well, that's.
That's under Bruce Rioch as well.
Let's remind the listeners this is an arson Wenger territory.
Yeah, and The funny thing about Bruce Rioch as well going on, I
think looking at it by articles and stuff, it got to a point I
(35:06):
think where he kind of obviouslygot sacked and stuff, but it got
where they wouldn't trust him with money.
There was something I could be wrong and someone else was
brought in to manage the funds and do the deals.
Yeah. But yeah, it's two good
signings. Well, he was signings, yeah.
They're massive, massive signings, mate.
(35:27):
Yeah. And he obviously was quite keen
on rebuilding Bolton at that point, because obviously Bolton
had just been promoted through the playoffs against Red in that
season. So 9495 S obviously Bruce Riock
wanted to bring Alan Stubbs to Arsenal.
We wanted to bring Mcateer, didn't they?
(35:47):
And that thing went to it with it, they wanted to get rid of
Ian Wright and bring in John McGinley or something like that.
Yeah, which just baffles me. Absolutely baffles me.
And you can see he didn't have the kind of the trust of the
players at the end. So yeah.
But I mean, what a start to their season with those two
(36:08):
signings. So it was incredible, isn't?
It absolutely. Even Aston Villa had a good.
I mean, I bought 7 Mosevich, GAIL Selfgate, Mark Draper.
But then they sell players like Delian Atkinson, Dean Saunders.
Yeah. Sean Teal leaves.
Wow. Yeah.
Brian Small. Haven't heard that name for
years. He went to Baltimore.
(36:30):
Brian. Was that Brian Small or Brian
Little? Oh.
Yeah, like this twig, was he? Manager at the time, yeah.
Do you reckon that was his, like, code name just in case he
needed to come on as a player? Like he couldn't register him as
a manager. So it's a Brian Small.
(36:52):
Yeah, well. There you go.
What I think about as well. Blackburn obviously won the
title. 9495 had a shit transfer window. 9596, Yeah, Matty
Holmes. So they thought they didn't need
to. Wow, was that it?
Yeah, yeah. It wasn't until like I think or
(37:13):
or October where they got Lars Bohenian, Graham Fenton, Chris
Coleman at Chris Christmas. But before that the all three
like just yeah, all they sign isMay Holmes from West Ham.
That was their only signing. Which again, like ISO, you've
got a title winning team. Like you can't just relax and
(37:39):
think every season you're going to win it with that same group.
You have to strengthen, don't you?
You can't just keep sitting there going.
OK, well, we rely on Sun and andShearer again because they're
now in Europe. They're going to be now expected
to go on the title run again andmaybe get more silverware in a
cup run. So the expectancy from the club,
(37:59):
they have to strengthen in numbers.
But during that with only Matty Holmes is a big faux power,
isn't it? Yeah.
So. Wow, wow, wow, wow.
Where we got sorry, Chelsea signwould pull it.
Mark Hughes had the note for my brother actually, because he was
a he. He said that rooms the memory of
going home and looking on teletext and Mark Hughes had
(38:19):
gone to Chelsea then seen him onthe news and the Chelsea shirt
and it just looked weird. Yeah, remembering in a
Manchester United shirt, him posing in a Chelsea shirt.
Yeah, that was a weird one. Yeah, yeah.
I think as well, though, the significance of going from a red
kit to blue is also worse because it just, you know, when
you're sort of like, you're so used to seeing him in a Man
(38:41):
United kit and then all of a sudden it's like Chelsea, Like
what? What?
I always laugh about this seat as well.
Peter Shilton. So he got.
Oh God. He got signed by Coventry and
then they must have been desperate and like two months
later shipped off to West Ham. It's just like getting from club
to club. Asked me about 50 back then.
(39:02):
Yeah, he was a hired gun though, wasn't he?
Like he just went to any club and like, because he was a
Bolton at one point, wasn't he? And then just started sort of
like just playing for random teams.
It's like Bruce Grobelaar, mate.I didn't know Bruce Grobelaar
played for the amount of teams that he did other than
Southampton and Liverpool because he was a chef on
(39:23):
Wednesday in 97. Yeah, he didn't play, but what
the hell. So Liverpool, I just remember,
Yeah. So yeah, Stan Collymore, I think
we signed Jason Mcateer as well in September.
Paul Stewart got shipped off to Sunderland.
Still hanging on to Paul Stewart.
Bye. Bye.
Paul Stewart. Yeah.
(39:43):
Yeah, yeah. What have you got?
Well, the 9596 season was kind of, I mean, I was going to talk
about Bergkamp and and obviouslythe kind of Arsenal regime with.
Yeah. Bruce Rioch and Platt and stuff.
And I think I, I look at people like Les Ferdinand and sort of
(40:10):
the, the Newcastle team for thatone in terms of like how they
structured life around Andy Colebecause didn't Andy Cole go the
9495, didn't he? So then Newcastle started
building teams around Aspria coming in, Les Ferdinand and
(40:30):
then Gillespie. Or Warren Barton.
Ginola. Ginola.
Yeah, I mean in this. So how can we forget David
Ginola for Newcastle? I mean, that was an incredible
summer for them. Yeah.
Philippe Albert as well. Like they had an amazing team.
(40:52):
I didn't. They also get a shack of Hislop
as well from from Reading. Yeah, they did.
So you think like their team took a massive restructuring
9596? What is one of the?
Transpo window I. Mean this was, I think this was
October Rule Fox to Tottenham I never got my head around because
(41:12):
he was. Yeah, yeah, it's a strange. 1.
Yeah, he was a do you know what?Newcastle for me have always
been based around pacey wingers, whether it's Gillespie, whether
it's Rule Fox, whether it's Beardsley at times Genola.
They always had an attacking threat and that's probably why
they relied so heavily on just Andy Cole upfront or just Les
(41:36):
Ferdinand upfront because they had such an attack in prowess.
Getting rid of Royal Fox was such a weird transfer because he
was big at Norwich when like they started the rise through
the Premier League, wouldn't they?
Yeah, so really. And you've got Middlesbrough
Nick Barnby that signed Fuel TopGennenio I think.
Yeah, so big. Big summer for newly promoted
(41:58):
Middlesbrough. Yeah, When that was, was that
Emerson or was that Emerson the season after?
I think it was the season. I think he's signed with Rabin
Elite, didn't he? Yeah, yeah.
What did you hear? Here's one for you.
What did you think about Chris Bart Williams going to
Nottingham Forest? Yeah, do you know what?
I loved him for Sheffield Wednesday.
He was a brilliant, brilliant centre midfielder and he was a
(42:21):
great character as well at the club because he was just, it was
such a ball of like energy, likeit never stopped and he
complimented Sheridan and Palmerso well.
Going to kind of Nottingham Forest again was another weird
one because he was always a namebecause it was Bart Williams.
As a kid it always stuck in my mind whenever I played like
(42:44):
football in the garages with my brothers, it was always Waddle,
Bart Williams, Palmer. Like you know, that was a weird
1 for me. I think we talked about in the
foreign imports. So let's see, Andre.
So let's see from the first Italian player, it wasn't.
Very busy? Nope.
Nope. What do you think about?
(43:05):
I was talking about, obviously, Bart Williams leaving.
So that transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday, you sign
Mark Penridge. Yeah, it's key.
Degrees, degrees, degrees. Yeah, Degrees, yeah.
Yeah, Matt Degrees A. Lot of players that season.
Yeah. And again, that was that.
(43:27):
That's 9596, wasn't it? Why did them?
I thought Dan Petrescu lasted longer than he did at Shepherd
Wednesday. He was.
Chelsea, yeah. He's just lasted the season.
Yeah, but that's a classic agentmove, that one, in my opinion.
Yeah, that's the get into the get into the Premier League,
prove a season, get a big move to London and that's the classic
(43:51):
Dan Petreski move there. Yeah.
Because I think Chelsea won't make it into Europe as well at
that point. Well, they've started to.
They just signed with Hallett, didn't they?
Yes. I mean, yeah.
What about Ali Dia? He's 9596, isn't he?
(44:13):
I think so, yeah. He doesn't even show up on here.
So he was a. A writer from history.
I know, but I know everyone gives him a lot of stick and
rightly so because effectively he's a liar because he confesses
to have obviously been a cousin to George Wyer, which isn't
(44:35):
confirmed. But what I didn't know was not
only did Graham soon as take a punt on him, offer him a one
month contract and he made that one appearance coming on for
Matt Letizier, but what I didn'tknow was that he also had
mystery phone calls to Harry Redknapp at West Ham.
He had phone calls. Harry would have taken a punt.
(44:59):
Yeah, but he said he was confused.
He thought it was a prank call. So I mean, already, it's a bit
fishy, isn't it? Tony Fuelist declined Gillingham
at the time and he had a trial at Port Vale for the reserves
against Middlesbrough. So like already people have kind
(45:22):
of looked at him and gone. Don't trust him.
What on earth made Graham SUNESCO?
I'll tell you what, let's put him in in the Premier League.
Mental. That's Graham.
Yeah, and I guess the biggest one for that summer as well,
which we can't forget. Manchester United is selling
Mark Hughes Pauline's, Andre Konchelska's and Bring It In
(45:44):
bugger roll. Yeah, yeah, that's the can't win
anything with kids, right? Yeah, exactly.
Boy, were they wrong. They run.
Really, right? Excellent.
Cool, we covered that that season.
Anything else to add? No, not for that season mate.
Georgia Kinclassy sign as well that season for.
(46:06):
What did you what do you think of Georgie?
Can Clancy overrated? Yeah, I just, I don't season.
Wonder. I don't know.
Yeah. I wouldn't.
I wouldn't say I would go as faras saying he's overrated.
He was a very talented footballer, very quick he.
Wasn't team player though, was he?
Oh, this is more to football than dribbling, though.
(46:28):
Yeah. Do you know what I mean?
I I don't find that style of football appealing.
You know, when Ryan Giggs used to do his Maisy Little runs, I
used to think, pass it, pass it.Ryan, just keep those skills for
the Reebok adverts. Yeah, come on, keep them for
yourself. Your skills DVD.
Yeah, he was a highlight reel. I think that's like we you see
that goal against Southampton when he just walks it through.
(46:52):
Yeah, yeah, he couldn't. Keep him up, though, could he
couldn't keep him up. How was that the season where
they thought they were staying up and then Niall Quinn panics
and oh God. Right, OK, yeah, well, I'm good.
Ouch. Ouch.
All right, cool. Let's move on to If It Works.
959697 Cheer breaks world recordfee.
(47:16):
Robson. Robson again.
Yeah, Robson stays silent over aRabinelli move that kind of came
out of nowhere. Poporski Man United deal, Ted to
be sealed. Gunners sign a nine.
Vieira from AC Milan was delighted in Patrick Burger
swoop Wednesday. Trustful move to be completed.
(47:36):
Orlando boom. I just had that.
One for £1,000,000. Jonesy.
What was his wife's name? She was a Dutch TV presenter and
model. Can't be Quincy.
It can't be trustful, sorry. Can't be.
(48:01):
Where'd you get that name from? Penny dropped.
Here we go. Sorry.
Moving on swiftly. Click.
All right, so Shearer. Oh, Shearer, remember that?
Wow. It was like a wow.
Yeah. And then the next day that the
front page, back front page and in the middle spread of Shearer,
(48:26):
obviously the just that iconic image when he walks out all
those paper. Look at that, look at that.
Let's be honest, right? We've had an incredible summer
in England. You're a 96th.
Yeah. Again, like players aplenty,
they've performed brilliantly. You now look at the Premier
(48:47):
League season, like what time tobe in the Premier League?
Like oh, Alan Shearer has come in the Newcastle after an
amazing EUR 96. My head would have blown off
dear to Geordie at that point. Yeah.
Would it? It's mental in there.
Yeah, that was one. I think that came out of nowhere
as well. Because you didn't, you mean?
(49:09):
Yeah, I don't, I don't remember.Well, there wasn't.
Before. Yeah, like because obviously you
don't get to, you get the rumourmill on see fax and you get the
kind of papers and. Stuff on teletext and then
suddenly the news like a news bulletin or something like that,
and you're like, yeah, what? Where did that come from?
(49:32):
Yeah, yeah. I mean, you've you've also got
to look at Man United's transferwindow that season, in the
summer. Just be there.
So in yeah. Just a you're in 96 piggy mix
wasn't? It just Sheringham, Puborski,
Solsha, Jordi Krauth, Johnson, Van der Howe.
(49:58):
But who? Look at who they lost though in
the summer, Steve, Bruce Lee, Shark, Paul Parker and one
retiring Eric Cantona. Course, how can we forget?
That's crazy. Yeah.
What else have you got on the sea?
(50:18):
Facts there mate. Yeah, so I've got see going down
the Middlesbrough, that was the one that just kind of kind of
nowhere as well. The Reverend Ellie, you see him?
Yeah, you know, Champions Leaguefinal and next.
He's signing for Borough, Yeah, I don't couldn't get him.
I still don't get that. Still don't go that.
(50:39):
Yeah, and then sign Emerson Mikkel Beck.
It's just a strange 1. I don't know.
Then you've got Sasa Surchek from Bolton Gunter Villa.
I have got a story on him. We didn't plan this guys.
(51:00):
Jonesy, it's like you're in my mind.
So this podcast is just a conversation in it, we go away,
we come up with a few things andwe come back and just share what
we found, don't we? That's how.
That's the. .0 good. So on what?
Do you got? Tasha, how do you say his name?
Sasha Kerchich, isn't it? Or Serchich.
Sasha Serchik. Isn't.
It right OK, like it's like he sells seashells on the seashore,
(51:23):
right? So he was deemed as the Serbian
George Best by Chris Kamara, right?
So his move from Bolton to AstonVilla, quoted Villa fans, was
the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life.
(51:44):
So he was known to have quite a,an on, on off feud with Brian
Little at the time, which resulted in minimal playing
time. And he featured mostly as a sub
because obviously Villa were in Europe in that season because I
think the season before they wonthe Coca-Cola Cup against Leeds,
didn't they? Yeah, we all Savo Milosevic, so
(52:05):
obviously linking him up with Savo Milosevic, etcetera.
He handed in numerous transfer requests during his time at
Aston Villa but then rescinded them when he had game time.
So he was very hot and cold, which again is a red flag,
right? However, he was known for his
(52:25):
out of control partying and druguse in Birmingham, right He
purchased he purchased double Decker bus to party in goodness
me and then I found out in 2007 he was deemed 16th out of 50
(52:48):
worst Premier League transfers of all time.
The Bolton move but obviously the season after he goes to
Crystal Palace and the fans lovehim, but what could have been
like because he was a great player at Bolton, wouldn't he?
Yeah, he was. Yeah.
Yeah. Great player.
(53:10):
Yeah, my beloved Chris Waddle goes to Falkirk.
It's yeah, yeah. 4 appearances and one goal.
Yeah. All right, OK.
Yeah, you want to try Scotland, Chris?
Good idea. I'm going off of you, Chris.
Yeah, you got Paul Kirk sold on there like Chelsea, Roberto Di
(53:34):
Matteo, Franklin, Boeuf, Viale. Yeah, that's good.
You know, Chelsea really surprised me because I don't
know how. That was before the Abramovich
era, wasn't it? I don't know how they do it.
It's still Ken Bates, Yeah. But they they got such marquee
signings, didn't they? Was that Casseragi and stuff as
(53:56):
well? What was that after?
I think that was after, yeah. Yeah, see.
But like LaBeouf Viali, wow. I mean, we're talking Premier
League must be the biggest league in the world at this
point now surely? I think it's getting there,
Yeah. Who else?
If he got like, yeah, just take a look.
(54:18):
Well, we haven't really touched upon Patrick Vieira, have we?
No, no. Did you have a clue who he was
when he was Arsenal at that point?
No, because, because obviously window I think, didn't they?
Yeah, and, and Vanga's now come in, hasn't he?
So obviously he's picking up thedregs from Bruce Riock, but he
(54:44):
transformed A-Team from real uncertainty of not wanting to
play for the club. Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp.
Dennis Bergkamp wasn't scoring much for Arsenal until the kind
of latter part of the 9596 season.
And to get a player that wasn't really featuring much at Milan
(55:06):
as Patrick Vieira and then to turn him into a world superstar
is probably the. I would say if Alan Shearer
hadn't have moved, it probably would have been the transfer of
that market that year. Yeah.
The value for money anyway. Three and a half million.
Like, come on. Yeah, Alan Shearer is going to
(55:28):
bring you goals, but that's a future captain, a future World
Cup winner. Incredible purchase.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's me.
Oh, I'll tell you what, I was sohappy when Patrick Burger
signed. I think I.
(55:48):
Mentioned you had a bit of a busy summer there, didn't you?
Liverpool with burger. Yeah, that was the one I took
forever as well. I was sorry.
Yeah. Just remember who you were.
And I was I Yeah, I was a fan ofhim.
And you were in 96, so when we signed him, so.
Woof. Yeah.
Yeah, I can play out. Who else?
Did favourite of yours as well and me.
(56:08):
Yeah, I think if you going back to time added on, I think he
features in there in one of our Liverpool episodes.
Time added on. We've got what do we think about
Wednesday? You got Andy Booth, Lance Key.
Will you stop staying Lance Key?We're crying out loud.
I think I sent you that. Was it in time added on your
(56:30):
episode? Just hyping at time added on.
I've seen that picture of the Lance Key and I'd ask who he
was, didn't I? Yeah, and then there was Matt
Clark as well. The goalie.
Yeah, yeah. Do you know because that season
was, was that Carbone or was theseason?
Yeah, he signed October. Ah, OK, so Richie Humphreys.
(56:52):
Yeah. Andy Booth.
I mean, Andy Booth, incredible striker, incredible striker.
I think I used to like thinking back about.
I think I used to sign when I used to play premier manager, I
used to always say Scott Oakes, Scott Oakes and Andy Booth.
So I think when Wednesday, Wednesday that signed him.
(57:14):
Oh, OK. Are you sure?
There used to be my strike in a Premier manager.
Do you know I used to think I was like the modern day Arsene
Wenger whenever I used to sign afive star rated mark as Babel
from Bayern Munich in the 97 season, I was literally like,
yeah, we're going to win great things.
Yeah, Andy Booth and Scott Oakes, like what made you do
(57:38):
that? I.
Don't know. We want a tight budget, Jamesy.
Yeah, they're highly rated, I think on the game.
Right, OK Andy Booth, though, was incredible.
(57:59):
Like he was a great replacement for Mark Bright because they
were very similar in terms of how they played.
Yeah, Andy Booth great with his head as was, but Mark Bright.
But yeah, fond memories of of Andy Booth.
Yeah, there you. Go.
I'm just looking at Southampton as well.
So this time Robbie Slater, Eagle iconstack.
(58:23):
Yeah. Gary Monk.
Graham Potter. Yeah, see, that's a very young
Gary Monk there, isn't it? I think he was early, late teens
only there. But Graham Potter?
Yeah, who'd have thought there? You go.
I was just looking at in N96 they sold Aleidae to Gateshead.
Wow, George Weyer's cousin, thatGateshead there you.
(58:47):
Go. Want to move?
Yeah, I think that's it, David. Hurst, I think he might have
gone that season about. That the Sanderson transfer.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Didn't want to pay for any other
club. Loyal to the brand, Loyal to.
(59:07):
The brand, yeah, that was a weird one because I mean, he's
Sheffield through and through. And then to go to Southampton, I
mean, I think obviously at that point you had Gordon Watson had
been there, Carlton Palmer, obviously they'd all dabbled
with Southampton, so there must have been a link there
(59:29):
somewhere. But yeah, that was a strange one
as well, to see David Hurst in red and white stripes.
Very unsettling for a young Woody in his theory or watching
Match of the Day. Yeah.
Could imagine and I think we just finished up West Ham, they
were dabbling in the foreign market with future A from a
similar and Florin Ratatoux fromEspanol and Mark Bone was it?
(59:53):
Few Trey. Wasn't he the Portuguese player
that refused to wear a certain number and then things?
Yeah, I think, I think we touched him in, in the.
We did, didn't we? Yeah, we did, yeah.
Yeah, OK. Yeah, Harry was busy that summer
girl. Yeah, all.
Right. Anything else to touch on I?
Think no. Not that one, no.
(01:00:13):
All right, cool. I think we'll move on 9798.
All right, Liverpool Swoop 4 enters int.
Bringing the governor back to the UK.
Yeah, Gunners doubled the layout.
Overmars, petite Spurs chase. Well, Jonesy.
(01:00:34):
Just stop there, Mark Overmars and Amano Petite.
I was just going to I. Was just going to, yeah, just
kind of talk over that. Yeah, that's.
Yeah, it wasn't that wasn't thatgreat, mate.
Only joking. Go on.
What have you got? Joking just I haven't got
anything on it. It's just the fact that that's
(01:00:55):
the headline like again, Arsenalbringing in that calibre of
player. But mark over my set the world
alike that season didn't he and petite goes and scores in the
World Cup final like as well as doing the double that season
like Unbelievable Jeff. That year they bought tell you
(01:01:16):
they got bomb more. They had a busy summer.
Arsenal bomb. More take.
Christopher Wray. Yeah, Glenn Helder, Alexander
Maniger. Glenn and Christopher.
Wray what do you think of Christopher Wray?
I've seen some clips and watching some old.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I used to watch the that
season specifically on video a lot.
(01:01:37):
Yeah, the 9798 and Christopher Ray and Luis Beau Amorte were
players that got Arsenal have a lot of sticky situations when
there was a long season because we covered their FA Cup run,
didn't we, in the 9798? And that was a long slog because
they had replay after replay after replay.
(01:01:57):
So they needed players. And people like Christopher Ray
and Beau Amorte might not go down in Arsenal folklore, but
they did a job. Yeah.
So good signings. Good signings, yeah.
Cool, so we've got, what else have we got?
Spurs chasing tune duo Jenna Love?
Ferdinand. That's a strange one, wasn't it?
Again though, incredible for Tottenham to get them to.
(01:02:20):
What do you think? Like obviously you shared it.
There we go. What's that?
Why not General? Just he's taking his shirt off
and he's just like holding it. There you go.
So at this at this point, I haveto confess my mum was obsessed
with David Genola when we were kids.
Like anytime he came on, obviously it was his head and
(01:02:42):
shoulder advert and yeah, his long flowing locks.
I mean, what a player I. Mean so everyone, everyone
remembers obviously the topless one, but I remember this one I
found for the newspaper as well. It's Ginola and Alan Sugar with
a can of gin and tonic. All right.
And on that same page here is like one-of-a-kind of a transfer
(01:03:04):
rumour. Roberto Baggio has called Darby.
He's ready to join their Premiership drive for £7
million. Following Boss is Jim Smith's
dramatic flight to meet the Italian superstar.
And, well, I reckon they just needed to just kind of fill up a
page, an article. Yeah, that's crazy going to
(01:03:25):
Derby. Yeah, mad.
Yeah, there. You go.
Are you doing a hold the Backpage without doing a hold
the Backpage there, Jamie? Did we need Brian May back for
that? It was little guitar riff.
You sneaking that in there? Like Backpage I was just because
I remember. I remember that General and Alan
(01:03:46):
Sugar with a can of gin and tonic, obviously, and I just
thought, yeah, that's typical 90s.
And then I saw that Baggio to Derby that.
Yeah, I'm so glad that never happened because, you know,
that's weird. So much rumours in the night.
Is it silly Articles like that wasn't there?
Wouldn't you have loved to have been a family on the wall though
(01:04:08):
with some of these transfer deals, mate?
Because some of these are incredible, aren't they?
How on earth do you manage to get Klinsmann to Tottenham like
or like Genola like they're they're in their?
Peak Genola fell out with Kenny Dalglish I think.
I think after everything else we've had, I'm pretty sure I
(01:04:29):
know the reason why. Yeah, and I think Les Ferdinand,
that's a strange one as well, wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah, a great Premier League striker.
I think the two needed needed money but yeah, that's a strange
one. We've got Leeds Hasselbank
transfer nearly done. Wednesday, the cameo moved to be
(01:04:50):
completed. Yeah, so Reggie Blinker goes the
other way for that one, which was Celtic.
Yeah, which is weird. You got the best deal, that one.
Yeah. Oh, but looking at it like some
of the I like that Bolton signed.
Peter Beardsley, Robbie Elliott,Marc Fish.
(01:05:10):
What I also had, yeah, they had John Sheridan, yeah as well.
So they had a real kind of strong Premier League
experienced team because Warhurst eventually went there
later on in his career. But yeah, they did have like,
because that was the the Reebok sponsor, wasn't it, the big
(01:05:30):
Reebok logo. I've got a bit of transfer news
for you about Coventry in the 9798 season.
So that summer, Gordon Strachan retires at the age of 40.
He's player manager still, so hestill wants to keep involved.
(01:05:52):
Gordon Strachan then signs his son from the youth team, Gavin
Strachan of course, exactly 18 years old, though he only made
16 appearances for Coventry and was then moved on.
But that happened quite a lot inthat kind of yeah, because
(01:06:17):
there's also Paul Dalgleish going to Newcastle with Kenny.
Kenny, yeah. Uncle Ken?
Yeah. Obviously Darren Ferguson, Alex
Ferguson. Yeah, obviously I think you'd
play for Man United, but like, it just goes to show you've got
an Ave into football, haven't you?
Nigel Clough or Brian Clough? Yeah.
(01:06:38):
Yeah, see. But yeah, that I thought that
was a bit odd. It's almost like coming from a
place by his son. Coventry St Roland, Roland
Nielsen that summer as well. Yeah, I know.
How'd you feel about that? Bitter sweet, to be honest.
Yeah. But yeah, he was a good player.
Very good player. I thought you had a Can we talk
(01:06:59):
about Arsenal having a good window?
Look at Chelsea Tour, Andrew Flow, Graham Lasso, Barbiero
Gustavo Poet. I loved Barbiero, yeah.
Barbiara was such a just a straightforward, no nonsense
left back for Chelsea. I thought he was a great player.
Yeah, I mean, you've got CrystalPalace, Lombardo, Paul.
Well, Warhurst. The bald eagle?
(01:07:21):
Yeah. Oh, well, I don't think we
mentioned him before. Yeah.
Jeez, what else have you got? I mean, you've got.
So you've got, yeah, I've said Jimmy Floyd, Hassle Point
Helfinger Holland from Notting Forest, going to Leeds, David
Hopkin from Crystal Palace. So Hasselbank was that
(01:07:43):
Hasselbank was from? Boa Vista.
Boa Vista. So then he goes to Athletico
Madrid after Leeds, doesn't he? And then goes to Chelsea.
Yeah, yeah, we we caught a glimpse of Jimmy Floyd's
Thunderbolt, didn't we? Because obviously he was a great
striker at that point. Was yeah, I remember
Liverpool's, I mean, we got PaulInce Oh with Leonards and Danny
(01:08:05):
Murphy from Crewe, Karl Heinz Reedler.
Yeah. We did well on that.
Obviously John Barnes went to Newcastle.
Quite a good window for. Liverpool Douglas went from
Liverpool to Newcastle, so yeah, there you go.
Yeah, great, great swap. Yeah.
Hedingburg to Manchester United.Eric Neveland, remember him?
(01:08:29):
Eric Nevland. Yeah, There was signing no
agents. Fergie had a thing for the no
agents, isn't he he? Did Yeah.
Was it Solscha Johnson? Yeah.
Henneberg. Yeah.
Crocky. What was he doing there?
Jeez. But we touched something.
You touched on the beginning of the Newcast Newcastle, so I had
a hell of a window. Ian Rush, John Barnes, Shay
(01:08:50):
Givens, Stuart Pearce, Pastoni from Inter.
Yep. Yeah, Incredible, right?
John Dale Tomlinson I had hopes for John Dale Thompson because I
remember watching a pre scene president friendly, I think it
was on Sky, it was against Celtic.
I think he scored two that he didn't.
I thought he was going to be a player.
I mean, he did well in this, obviously later on in his
(01:09:11):
career, but it just didn't work out for him, did it?
But what I find strange about this though, mate, is this is
before the World Cup. Yeah.
So this these transfers aren't on the back of a successful
France 98. This is before which is crazy.
But then you've got like Newcastle, obviously Penny's in
(01:09:32):
charge. But then you see he's getting
rid of kind of Kagan's team. He gets rid of Beardsley, Lee
Clark, Robbie Elliott, Les Ferdinand, Ginola.
Yeah. And then obviously next year in
the January, he gets rid of a spree.
John Beresford. Yep, that's a my way or the
highway though, isn't it? Yeah.
Yeah, kind of stance, which is ashame because I think if
(01:09:54):
Newcastle would have strengthened their squad the
right way and kept Keegan, yeah,I think they would have probably
challenged United for the seasonagain.
Have you got anything on Sheffield Wednesdays?
I mean, it was this this summer you got obviously the cameo, so.
Emma, Rudy. Rudy.
(01:10:16):
Yeah, brilliant. Did Emerson time come in that
year or was he the season after?Might be 98. 99, Yeah, yeah.
Peter Rudy was brilliant. I remember I liked him.
Yeah, the cameo, because that was the first season I saw Chef
on Wednesday, so watch them play.
Who've you Got you signed a playfor Monaco?
(01:10:37):
Patrick Blondell. Oh, Patrick Blondell.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nigel Clough, Yeah. I know Jimmy Jilton.
That is his name. Yeah.
I remember Jimba Jill in there. And that was the season.
Grobble, I signed as well, 97 but didn't play.
(01:11:02):
But yeah, it was just a weird time.
And again, it was another one ofthose kind of we started to lose
a bit of an identity there. Yeah.
We started to lose the big players and then we started
bringing in older players and itwas a bit like, are we fighting
for survival here or are we pushing for top ten?
Like it was a bit weird. Orlando Trustful, left.
(01:11:26):
Vimyonk was he there? Vimyonk.
It's on my list, Yeah, there yougo.
And then you've got Southampton with, yeah, David Hurst, Carlton
Palmer back in the same time. There you go.
Yeah, incredible. Lucky Saints.
But yeah, what else? Anything else?
(01:11:50):
Well, you've got 9899. Yeah, we'll touch on that one.
I'll touch on David Unsworth because I've got a story on
David Unsworth actually signing from so 9798.
He's signed from Everton to WestHam.
And then we'll go to the next one if you work David Unsworth.
(01:12:12):
Yeah, So I'll touch on David Unsworth before.
Yeah, here we go. So did you hear the story?
David Wensworth? Sorry.
From Everton to West Ham for a season.
Then he goes to Villa. Yeah, at the end of the 97984
million. And then he decides driving to
(01:12:34):
one training session that it wastoo far.
He didn't want to commute on theM6.
And then he after that first training session, he needed to
speak to Gregory at the trainingground.
And he said to Gregory, I think I've made a mistake.
Regularly says, what's that? Then I don't think I should have
signed for Villa. Gregory was thinking it was a
(01:12:55):
wind up thinking that something went off in the dressing room or
something like that. But no, his wife didn't want to
see him commute. His wife wouldn't relocate to
the West Midlands. John Gregory Not I felt, I felt
insulted. Would you have not done the
drive before you signed? The fact that you should not
(01:13:15):
even be prepared to come down and have a look despite the fact
that husband has signed of AstonVilla, well that was a lack of
respect for us all 4. Million as well.
Yeah, I know Brahms Birmingham'sreputation, but I also know that
you do not have to look very farfor beautiful places to live,
especially on the kind of money David was on.
(01:13:37):
Crikey Oris Estate agent John Gregory.
Jesus, he played one. He played one pre season friend.
What? I loved looking at this.
Right, Right. So he signed kid there with the
David who's having David Sunsworth on their shirt.
So it's the picture of a mother and a child and he's got
(01:13:59):
Unsworth number six and he's gotthe saddest face.
Yeah, like, yeah, so. Did he ever play officially for
Villa? Just a preseason friendly.
Then it was it was gone and I. Didn't actually ever see him in
a kit for Villa. I couldn't.
Remember that on on the article?Apparently he just couldn't be
bothered doing it. So where did he go from there?
(01:14:20):
I went back to Everton, so I think the thing was.
So he did the season, yeah, Everton to West Ham for a season
and then Everton wanted to buy him back but Villa outbid them.
So West Ham accepted the bid forfrom Villa, so he went to.
Villa and Yeah. Yeah, first day days.
I've made a mistake because you got stuck in traffic.
(01:14:42):
Have we got a calling off period?
And then, yeah, I think after the first training session, you
just wanted to go. So we're up.
So that was a little straight. So let's go back onto what were
we on? 9899 now.
Yeah, OK, so Chelsea swoop for Desai.
Wow. Yeah, that was a big one.
Try York still pushing for Man United move Julia delight at
(01:15:04):
Dundee Hagen swoops. I wasn't delighted.
I just shared. All set for 4.4 million
Blanquist deal, West Ham, Ian Wright transfer nearly done and
Wednesday Rim Young moved to be completed.
Right, OK, So yeah, rim Young was 9899 great midfielder Dwight
(01:15:27):
York to Man United. Incredible.
Because obviously that because Graham Taylor scouted Dwight
York on Aston Villa's tour of the West Indies in the early 90s
and he would then spent nine years at Aston Villa to then
(01:15:48):
suddenly go do you know what I need to be winning more trophies
to then partner with Andy Cole and win the treble.
Come on, come on now. Come on, come.
On what else have you? Got big gaps damn as well big
yap stands dines in the summer from PSV which again is insane.
(01:16:11):
And that's that's Man United's kind of transfer business at
that point. They had a great team.
This is what Blackburn didn't doin the season of 95 and 96.
They kept the core of their teambut they didn't build on it.
Man United did and that's where their success comes from.
You buy a strong centre, back, another striker, off you go.
Yeah, trick is to buy when you're strong.
(01:16:32):
Exactly, exactly you're they already had sharing them and
Andy Cole So incredible. Yeah, So, yeah, enjoy your
hooks, Bonquist. Yep.
Stamp. Jeez, there you go.
So, yeah, Arsenal I got there. That's on Freddie Youngberg.
Yeah. Nelson, Vivos.
Kanu. Yeah, Billa had a good dealer
(01:16:53):
transfer window. They got Paul Merson, Ellen
Thompson. Was it?
Just trying to hype up. Just trying, just trying to hype
up. Villa had a great transfer
window. They had Paul Daniels and Les
Dennis. Oh yeah.
Jim Bowen online, Kevin Davis. Kind of Blackburn he was.
(01:17:19):
Yeah, yeah. Was he successful at Blackburn?
Don't think so, let me have a look.
Because where did they get him from?
Southampton, I think. It was Southampton.
Chesterfield after that. Remember the FA Cup for
Chesterfield? Yeah.
Then he's got signed by Southampton, didn't he?
Let me have a look. Yeah, it didn't work out through
(01:17:42):
him, did he? Let's have a look at this.
Sorry. 7.5 million. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
After one season at Southampton where he scored by 25.
So yeah he played 25 games for Southampton, 979825 games, nine
goals and then Blackburn going spend 7.5 million.
(01:18:05):
And then that season he plays 2121 Premier League games, one
goal and is back, sold back to Southampton.
Was he upfront? With Sutton, yes, I think so.
He just didn't. Wow, that happened.
Crazy Chelsea getting to Sai is a massive 1 there because he's
(01:18:28):
just won the World Cup of France, hasn't he?
That's an incredible sign in Oh.Dad, have you got anything on
there? They had a good window as well.
No, we've got nothing on them. Who've you got?
They're signed. What you got?
Kazuragi? Brian Lau Drop.
Because he didn't that work out.Albert Ferrer.
Albert Ferrer? Yep.
(01:18:49):
The little Spanish waiter. He did not look like a
footballer. Albert Ferrer, my God.
Where else? Yeah, just having a quick look
here also go. Loud drop, though that was a bit
of a weird one. Just didn't work out, did it?
No, it didn't be there. No, but like again, like he was
(01:19:09):
very good for Rangers and then obviously had a great sort of
tournament with Denmark and yeah, why did that not work out?
Yeah, I remember being disappointed.
The Liverpool's movie someone Steve Staunton, Sean Dundee,
Vergard Hagam and Jorgen Nielsen.
That is the trend. Awful window.
Yeah, pissed off. I mean, I like Steve Stornen,
(01:19:33):
but like, Steve Stornen wasn't in the pomp of his career there,
was he? No, no.
What on earth are they thinking?I don't know.
It was a big lacklustre transferwindow.
Yeah, I mean, Sheffield wins. Like what?
You just signed Wim Young. That's it.
Yeah, yeah. It was a quiet window I remember
because we kind of kept those players for a couple of seasons.
(01:19:54):
You sold Mark Pembridge to Ben Fika?
Yes. I honestly do not ask me how
that happened. Is it Marco Pembrijo?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. There he is.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's weird. Yeah, that's, that's a weird
(01:20:14):
one, but yeah. Yeah, go on.
I was going to say it was a it was a weird time for chef for
Wednesday. You are.
To get excited over isn't there? No.
And the 9899 season, Other than the treble between Arsenal, Man
United, nothing else really prolifically happened, did it?
No, no, that's weird. I guess I'll just touch on the
(01:20:40):
Southampton James Beatty, Mark Hughes from Chelsea, Stuart
Ripley. I forgot Stuart Ripley went to
Southampton. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's a weird sort of link between Blackburn and
Southampton at times, Yeah. Tony was a weird one.
Shaka Hislop going from Newcastle to West Ham.
Yeah, but again that's sort of shy given was in the season
(01:21:06):
before and then would soda checkhave been there or you've been
at Wednesday? I think it was a Wednesday then
there was any. Yeah.
So yeah, it's a weird kind of like restructuring going on
around Newcastle wouldn't. There.
Let's see. Yeah.
I just remember that's, that's yeah.
I just remember. I think it's a bit of a
lacklustre kind of window to be honest.
(01:21:29):
We end on that, mate. Yeah, that's it.
Sorry guys. There you go.
Sorry to end up on a bit of a. We don't touch the the 99 two
thousand season though, Dewey Jonesy, because obviously Y2K
kind of ruins our podcast, doesn't it?
Yeah, yeah, a few interesting signings, wasn't there?
(01:21:52):
Yeah, but again guys, for those of you that are listening, tell
us your marquee signings for your club, whoever it is, Yes,
your favourite ones, the flops, obviously.
Ask me 90s please. But yeah.
And any memories that you've got, like Jonesy's 50P football
hotline in the in the phone box or reading a newspaper on a
(01:22:14):
sunbed in Majorca, whatever it is, tell us.
We want to know we're. Going to go revisit Price is
Right. Do you read it?
Yeah. Ready.
Let. Me hit that music.
Here we go, TV's biggest game show.
In. Jonesy's price is right.
(01:22:40):
Hello. Hello, You Beautiful people.
Nice to see you. To see you.
Nice. All right.
Welcome, mate. Welcome back.
Good game. Good game.
Good game. Jonesy's Price is right.
Just sounds good. Don't there?
Yeah. I mean, I think you've got to
work on that bit of Jonesy's sound like you were talking to
(01:23:03):
the crisp packet, right? Let's go.
All right, I can't remember these.
Jeez, I forgot to write the prizes down.
All right, the first one is Chris Glenn and Chris Diamond
Lights. These are vinted.
You get a free poster inside. Are you on my Vinted?
I'd love that CD. Oh, right.
(01:23:26):
OK, CD. I can't remember what I put.
All right, Yeah, go on. I can't even give you a hint
because I've forgotten 12 LB It was.
Thank the Lord. £4.75. £4.75 That's a bargain to be fair.
(01:23:47):
Come on man, you're going to getthat skin.
I know I should. Yeah, I know.
OK, this next one is Elise SharpDouble.
I could do something really creepy if I put my face on Glenn
Hoddle on the CD. Me and Chris, number one, single
right, sorry. Sorry.
So next one's a boxed Lee Sharp pictures in picture.
(01:24:10):
Nice picture frame as well. That's 93.
P. You don't want to mate.
No, I don't. That looks like one of those
like fold out boxes on the fireplace of like, here's my
grandson at school. But it's Lee Sharp, which is
really weird. I love how they've got so
there's no no one's watching this one.
So I bought in 1990s to Lee Sharp and United phones in frame
(01:24:32):
uploaded 2 weeks ago. So someone's been sitting on
these since the 90s. They must have found them and
went oh I know, getting convinced now.
What are you thinking? How much are you going to pay?
£6.50 My God I'm on a bad run. All right, let me just get to
(01:24:54):
the next one. OK, This is a Liverpool 1990
calendar featuring That's cool for his craft like Ian Rush,
Peter Bearsley and John Barnes. I like that.
For a new calendar. Calendar.
OK, right. Calendar.
(01:25:15):
I'm going to say £15 for that. 1999 One day I'll do the the
correct buzzer you're going to get one it's.
Psychologically damaging this buzzer at the moment.
Mate, I'm on a downward spiral with this.
You'll enjoy this next one, all right, Kevin Keegan.
(01:25:40):
It's a Kevin Keegan. Signed Royal Dalton on the
plate. All right, so this was uploaded
six weeks ago. This condition new without tags
signed by Kevin Keegan, Royal Dalton Fight Newcastle United
was given to me by a friend who works in the private dining
industry. English and born in China.
(01:26:01):
Can you imagine finishing your dinner and then discovering
Kevin Keegan's face underneath? It's got and it's written.
Very best wishes, Kevin Keegan. All right, so I'm going to give
you a hint for this one. It's it's between 70 and 100.
Gummy bears. I want to pay pounds.
(01:26:21):
My God. 70 in 100 I'm going to go for £84.50.
Oh, close. 90 lbs. Again, what's with the noise?
90 LB for Kevin Keegan. Plate.
All right, all right. I know we're going for this the
(01:26:44):
the grand prize. OK, so this is memorable
Wednesday ticket stumps in the England World Cup winners photo
comes framed. So someone's got obviously.
So this is uploaded 9 months agoon vintage right?
So someone's obviously got a photo frame of Bobby Moore with
the World Cup. So they decided it's a good idea
(01:27:05):
to put the Stamps from the Sheffield Wednesday Cup finals
in 1993, the League Cup final with 1991 and the 2023 Plymouth
4 nil down. All right, so someone's just
whacked them in the in the frame.
Makes no sense. Yeah.
OK, so this one, obviously this is the this is the star prize.
So I'm going to give you betweenMake it easy between 250 and 300
(01:27:31):
lbs. Jonesy, I was going to say below
£50 for this. Yeah, there you go.
Tell you what the what was what was that again, that was 200
and. Yeah, sorry.
I'm going to give you the so between 250 and 300 lbs between
that. My God.
What are you going for? Oh please tell me that's
(01:27:54):
annoying to 275 two. 191. That is horrendous, that one.
This been uploaded nine months ago, so literally all this
someone's done is just yeah, they've got a Bobby Moore and
they've just blue tacked this. Yeah, with, with.
(01:28:15):
And they've put it up there till290.
Wow. Goodness me.
That was an awful run there. Yeah, sorry, mate.
I'll we've got to become up witha better format for this, but
there we go. All right, back in the game.
So that was the summer signings episode, Jonesy.
(01:28:37):
Absolutely. Jeez, I'm exhausted.
Yeah, we've uncovered quite a lot there, but there was a lot
of stories that kind of attachedto other signings and stuff.
So I mean, we, we uncovered quite a bit there, mate.
And well done again for your detail.
Everyone loves us, the fax page.Absolutely.
All right. Right.
(01:28:59):
Thank you everyone for listening, Jonesy tell us if
anyone wants to find you your Instagram page or anything to do
with any particular classic football shirts deals that we
are now offering, let us know. Yeah, so I'm at Football Dot
Jonesy. Where are you, mate?
Where are you hiding? I'm at Woody W I'm not hiding.
(01:29:22):
I'm everywhere. I'm at Woody W 1988.
You're only on A. Goal.
You're only on a goal poster though, aren't you?
Yeah, I've I've got to admit that wasn't a full size goal
that I was leaning on. I am 6 for seven, but I'm not
leaning on the full goal. That would have been a bit
weird, Yeah. We're on the insta, aren't we?
Where are we on the insta for the Yeah on page?
(01:29:44):
Well, we're do you know what we've we've got some great
traction going on the Instagram page.
So thanks ever so much for people that are sending again,
their well wishes, their thoughts.
We're getting loads of stuff from people that are sending
pictures of what they were doing, what they were wearing,
the favourite bits about the pod.
We're loving that. Keep it coming.
Yeah, you know. Yeah, and for the for the

There you go, get 10% off. I didn't know.
I was just realised he could usethis.
