(00:00):
Good afternoon from Wembley, oneof the great days in the
sporting calendar. It's cup final day.
Oh Jonesy, that sends shivers down.
Mice binds the deadline in frontof the twin towers there.
Wembley. How you doing mate?
Good, good. It's a special event, isn't it?
Special event We've rose to the occasion, haven't we?
(00:23):
I mean, you and I are suited andbooted for the FA Cup final.
Special we are. I said it was a joke.
I didn't realise you would go absolutely.
Do you know, like The funny thing is though, is obviously in
Australia right now, it's probably roasting hot.
Yeah, it's 24 at the moment. Or.
Yeah, but rest assured guys, we're not with the suit
(00:47):
trousers, the shoes, the carnation.
We are just top heavy with us. Doot and tie on today.
Here we go. But what a way to introduce the
podcast. I mean, firstly, yeah,
grandstand music, there's Lynam.Come on.
Right. Let's just talk, talk Jonesy for
(01:08):
a moment, mate. Tell me, what did that mean to
you when you were a kids watching that?
Like my reel I put up yesterday, the next the next six hours I'm
going to be unavailable. I'm worried that it's not going
to go for six hours, but I couldread the content we've got.
But I know God, you just what are the what are the days of the
year you look forward to? Huge.
(01:30):
Yeah, huge. I think it was more of like a
community thing. Yeah, you know, it was Yeah.
Like you did just dedicate your whole morning to watching the
build up because they filmed theplayers getting on the coach.
They filmed them getting off, I think some FA Cup finals.
They even showed the coach parking right.
(01:50):
They're going live from the teamhotel.
Exactly. They used to have, like, things
like managers sat in a sofa together chatting, captains
playing snooker against each other.
Yeah, you know, And it was like, meet the teams.
And it was so there was so much detail that went into it, wasn't
it? Yeah, what they were wearing in
(02:11):
terms of the suits, who they were tailored by.
Wow. Like I just I mean FA Cup finals
now are very much the hour buildup how they got there, a few
interviews with the players, butthe coverage is nowhere near.
So This is why we have brought this podcast to you today, guys,
that 90s FA Cup final podcast. That's it.
(02:35):
That's. It Jonesy, tell us what's in
store for the episode, mate. We're going to go through
everything, can't we? I think we go through the road
to Wembley, the actual cup final.
Yeah. We're going to touch on songs.
Oh yeah, yeah, maybe a little TVGuide as well.
We've got everything. Yeah, we're going to touch on
pretty much everything. It's going to be, it's going to
be a good episode, right? So sit back, relax, put your
(02:59):
headphones on, grab a beer, whatever you're doing with the
podcast, and we will take you through 90s FA Cup Final
nostalgia. Guess what mate, I've been
looking forward to this one. Me too.
We're going to get a teacher printed that one.
We, we obviously have these particular phrases.
(03:21):
It's hard not to say this stuff though, isn't it?
It's like game's gone or wasn't the same as what it used to be,
or I'm looking forward to this one.
Right. Kick us off, mate.
Where do we start? Well, we're not going to bother
with what we're wearing because we're in suits mate, so I guess
you could just say you've got. Marks and Spencer.
(03:42):
I think this is Connor. And I've got, like I pointed
out, I've got a little, a little, a little FA Cup badge as
well. Yeah.
Can you zoom in on that or show us a little bit more A.
Little bit. This was given to me well by
Neville Southall 1995 at Colwyn Bay when he brought the FA Cup
on tour. Did he?
That wasn't a pin badge he wore on the day of the final.
(04:03):
He got that for winning and. I don't know, I just I just gave
him out like when I he did a meet and greet thing.
So big Nevada has touched that badge.
Yeah, I got to touch the FA Cup as well.
I did have the, sorry, I put it on Instagram, but I was in the
local newspaper with the trophy.Ah, it's got Times.
Amazing, amazing. As a Liverpool fan, I could not
(04:24):
turn down a chance to go and seean Everton player with the FA
Cup. Because I'd unbelievable, right?
Because, and I remember this feeling OK, because the FA Cup
to me as a kid was almost biggerthan the World Cup.
I know that sounds silly, I knowit's not.
But in terms of the scale of it,it was huge.
(04:47):
So I can remember as a kid I wason a Coca-Cola soccer school
locally during the summer. And one of the days me and my
brother had a trip to Wembley and it was the traditional old
Wembley. And it was the most breathtaking
stadium I have ever seen in terms of walking around, looking
(05:07):
how big the stands were, how faraway the crowd seemed.
Obviously I was only there in a weekday so they put like the
sound of the crowd on as you walked out the tunnel.
Brilliant, yeah. So that was unbelievable.
But my memories of that are the managers suited and booted with
the flower, you know, leading their teams out that walk from
(05:30):
the kind of race track around the outside across to the pitch.
Like it just sort of. It makes me have goosebumps just
even thinking about those days. Yeah.
And it was like, I mean, you look in old magazines and stuff
up, play with interviews with players, like a lot of them, and
say their dream is to score in acup final.
Yeah, like an FA Cup final. I mean, I don't, you know, now
(05:53):
it's Champions League, World Cup.
But back then it was like every boy's dreamed to score in AFA
cup final, wasn't it? That's how much it meant.
Well, you listen to all these podcasts of ex professional
players etcetera. That was the pinnacle moment.
If you featured in an FA Cup final, you made it as a
professional, right? Yeah.
And I can kind of see why. You know, I don't know if you
(06:16):
interviewed players of today, would they have that same, you
know, would they be a bit more like, well, Champions League or
winning the Premier League or qualifying for Europe?
The FA Cups kind of lost that magic, which is why today, my
friend, we are going to relive this magic.
(06:38):
Absolutely. Kick us off, boy.
Yeah, I think we're going to go into state of the week, can't
we? I've updated the state of the
week. Yeah, little intro video.
Yeah, FA Cup centric, so I hope you like this one.
(06:58):
What is it? Wembley.
With my With my star album. I used to find that picture of
one of them. Wicked.
Yes, I could have put it. Sorry for the listener.
I've just updated the static graphic just to include Woody's
Woody at Wembley with his binder.
(07:20):
Do you know what? Right.
I'm getting sick and tired of trying to tell people to watch
YouTube because you should be watching it already.
I've put a suit on for you today.
Jonesy is sweating in Australia, but you.
That's it, right? Sacrifice.
All right mate, What have you got?
I've got a plethora of stats foryou today.
Obviously I'm going to be sprinkling them throughout the
episode. But today, right, First thing I
(07:43):
didn't know right, Manchester United in 1990 when they won the
FA Cup on route to Wembley. Manchester United won all of
their games away from home. Oh, OK.
Never Old Trafford, which was incredible, yeah, yeah.
(08:04):
The first FA Cup tie to be decided by penalties was in 1991
between Rotherham and Scunthorpeand it finished 76.
Now penalties to be decided. I know that wasn't an FA Cup
final, it was an FA Cup game I thought was incredible and
(08:26):
Chelsea's main feature in the FACup obviously was 94 against Man
United and 97 in against Middlesbrough.
And obviously I think was it 2000?
Obviously they made against Aston Villa.
Talk about that one. Can't remember that one.
Did you know I completely forgotthis one, but they were both LED
(08:49):
out by player managers Glenn Hoddle and Rude Hullet of.
Course. Oh yeah, there you go.
So I didn't know Rude Hullet wasstill classed as a player
manager, but apparently at that point, because obviously Glenn
Hoddle put himself on in the 94 final as you do.
(09:09):
Yeah, but Ruth Hurley, I don't think he featured, but he was
still classed as a player for Chelsea in that season there.
You go, that's that's. Interesting.
Yeah, Thanks mate. No worries, all righty.
Over to you. OK, I think we had discussions
anyway, I was like, do we? Because it's going to be every
(09:30):
episode content. I do hold the Backpage and I was
like yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh yes, because I apologise.
I was going to park it for the week, right, But yeah, no, all
right, I think it has to. Feature mate.
It has to. Oh no, you missed that riff,
don't you? You can't indeed.
(09:59):
All right, the Littlewoods flag.Yes.
Oh, the tiniest details are incredible.
By the way, so this is hold the 90s FA Cup right?
OK, ready for it? OK, let's go, let's do it.
OK, so this is from May the 21st1995.
The headline is blue to fall. So Everton left my team
(10:23):
Manchester United trophy list yesterday with a gritty one nil
win at Wembley on a day when Merseyside held A-Team.
True of blue, Heroes goalkeeper Neville Circle won the day.
Ironically their display also made X boss Mike Walker 150,000
LB winner. Walker acts in November had the
FA Cup winning bonus written into his contract when he took
(10:43):
over 16 months ago. Three-year contract was
terminated just after 10 months, but he still qualified for the
bonus. Mike Walker, what a what a
result. That is incredible.
I know I saw that one and I was just.
Like normally the managers wouldprobably be a bit cheesed off
(11:07):
with not featured in an FA Cup final because I'd probably be
quite big for Mike Walker, wouldn't it at the time?
Lead out Everton, right? But obviously 150 grand in the
pocket. And also as a Liverpool fan,
mate, did you want Everton the win against Man United?
Does it work like that? Yeah, I did.
You did? Yeah.
Yeah, Yeah. I think United as more as.
(11:29):
Merseyside, you know. Yeah, I think it's, yeah.
I saw Man United more as a actually as a rival because in
school it was Liverpool Man United, wasn't it?
Yeah. If you've mentioned on other
episodes to get one over, it's like when Sheffield Wednesday
would beat United, you know? Yeah, Yeah.
You know. Normal service resumes after
(11:49):
they've lifted the trophy. That's it, That's it.
But. One hell of a bit of paper
though, that. Mike Walker Yeah, yeah, I found
that one. I was just like, yeah, that's
going on the Backpage. So Mike Walker, Right.
Cheers. I, you know, I, I think in terms
of like that match itself thoughwas huge because that was the
(12:11):
season that Man United won, werebeaten in terms of the league
and the cup. So it was becoming a regular
occurrence that Man United wouldfeature in some form of a
trophy. But obviously that was a real
wake up call for Man United, wasn't it that season, Because
obviously they changed things and tweaked things and it's
(12:32):
going to be a. Bit like Man City, I think.
Yeah, yeah, at the moment, the present day, yeah.
Yeah, I do think things need to change, mate.
And I think that was quite a catalyst for that.
I think in FA Cup history. 95, absolutely.
Sorry to discussion before we recorded as well.
So we've been a Premier League podcast.
We're going to go from mainly from from 93, aren't we?
(12:55):
Because I think, you know, at the Premiership era, we're going
to talk about Premiership era every cup final.
But going through your research,I was just said before I watched
the 1990 cup final highlights onYouTube and what a game.
Like yeah. Yeah, Ian, right.
I mean, I've got a programme here as well.
(13:16):
Look. Oh, give me a little zoom in on
that one. There you go.
Book. Beautiful shiny, isn't it?
A condition of that is incredible.
Remember the smoking? Adverts on.
Where they didn't put like the picture of like a lung or
something on the back, it was more glorified.
And I was like I. Was I'm an advert freak.
(13:38):
I love adverts. Look at that one for the keeper.
Look at that. Booked her?
Yeah, come on. Yeah, and also I've got the
replay one as well, a bit thinner.
Yeah, more smoking on the back. What did it say inside the
replay one? Like please see previous issue.
You'd have to rush it, wouldn't you?
(14:00):
Can you imagine, though, like people that worked in the
marketing department or whateverfor the FA be like, Oh my God,
it's gone to a replay, right, John?
John, we need overtime. I mean.
Jim Layton got dropped for the replay, didn't he?
I mean, if someone's in the replay, once done, even Jim's
well marked like advert for Adidas.
Yeah, As to who was the goalie that replaced Jim Layton, I
think it was. Les Seeley, wasn't it, Les?
(14:21):
Seeley. But didn't he have like a really
bad injury in that game as well?So I just didn't.
Know it was like a real bad cut.Could be.
I remember it was Jim Layton's last game for United.
He wasn't even on the bench, washe?
Well, he. Yeah, he really threw his toys
out of the brand and they. Well, have you seen like looking
(14:44):
at his performance in that firstgame, like for some of the
goals, yeah, you can see why, why Fergie was like, yeah, got
to change, was that? The first time we saw Fergie
ruffle some feathers, do you think Or do you reckon he'd
already done that before? Yeah, I reckon he'd done it
before. Well.
What I love about the that 90 final actually mate, was the
(15:06):
kits, because obviously the first game was obviously Palace
were in their traditional blue and red stripes, weren't they?
But that was the fly virgin kit, wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah. And then they're away kit, which
I never see is the black and yellow stripe kit.
Oh, incredible. They've done a re release of
(15:27):
that one. I think you have that, yeah.
And I've been eyeing it up, bothof them actually, because for
cup final kits, they're beautiful, yeah.
Incredible. Yeah, I hope they can get.
My hands on them as well, same with United Ones as well the.
United 1 weren't that bad, were they?
So yeah, because. They wore white in the YEAH
final, then red in the replay. Is that the shirt that's just
(15:50):
been re released by the way by Adidas?
The white one, It's. Sync size, similar variant,
similar variant to that one, isn't it?
Yeah, OK, right. They're going on to 91 as well.
I guess we're touching with thatone said.
I don't remember this one to be honest.
Like obviously during the time we know about at night, you
know, Tottenham 2 not in Forest One.
(16:12):
Yeah, I think it was the the gascoin, wasn't it?
Yeah, two violent tackles withinthe 1st 15 minutes.
Yeah. I mean the what I found interest
about 91 because obviously that's the famous Gaza, isn't it
saying I'm getting measured. Yeah, but obviously their first
(16:32):
semi final to be held at Wembleywas in 1991, Tottenham, Arsenal,
which was the three one Tottenham, obviously the Gaza
goal, but that was the first ever semi final to be played
there I thought was interesting. Was that the first final as
well? For obviously Spurs were a
different kit, didn't they? Yeah.
Well, that Umbro, yeah. Because they played in the
(16:54):
Hummel kit, didn't they? And then, oh, that's the real
weird moment. Hummel for the season and then
Umbre for the fight. I mean, both kits were glorious
though, yeah. Absolutely.
I've got there, got the Spurs one somewhere.
But yeah, I mean, I mean, I'm a traditionalist.
New kits need to be first day ofthe season, yeah.
(17:16):
Thank you, Jonesy. I have got a little bit of that
for later on, but yeah, I'm withyou on that one.
Like finish the season in your kit.
Don't go advertising new becauseyou ain't won nothing yet, you
know but I. Remember that game as well,
Stuart Pearce? I mean, if that net wasn't
there, that ball would still be going.
Like cracking free kick. Yeah, yeah.
(17:37):
And then Paul Stewart and your mate Des Walker.
I'm good. Yeah, you didn't have to mention
that mate, did you? Yeah, poor old Des.
I mean, he's had, he's had a fewmoments, hasn't he?
Bless him where it's kind of gone against him.
But my God, like, what a player. But yeah, I mean, they had a
great side there because that was, was that Roy Keane as well
(17:59):
for Nottingham Forest? Would that have been?
Yeah, you know, Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they had Forest Head
Crosley, Gary Charles as well. Catch Steve Chattel, Stuart
Peers, Gary Crosby, Roy King, Gary Parker in one, Nigel Clough
and Lee Glover in one. See, Crossley saves the Lineka
penalty in that game, doesn't he?
It does. Yeah, Lineka didn't have had a
(18:22):
goal ruled off offside, which I think should have stood what I
say. But yeah, Lineka didn't have a
Yeah, they didn't have a classicD, but they won't.
So Fast forward a year, do you want to talk about 92 Jamesy, or
are we just moving on? Yeah.
We can talk a bit about 92. Give us a little.
(18:43):
Dust in. It was the first FA Cup final to
feature a second Division team since QPR, which is the final in
1982. Cool.
Yeah, not the best fight. I mean Steve McManaman had a
hell of a game. We went out of match, you got
mad at match but seen little Steve McManaman run around
terrorising Sunland. But some of them, they did well
(19:05):
in that game. They nearly got the programme.
But that one, if you want to have a look, it's not as classic
as the other one. What is that on the front?
I don't. Know is that a?
Blurred boot. It's like, it's like something
surfing in like some dirty, I don't know what it is and on the
back, there you go. I thought there's a block of
(19:30):
butter. It's a cardboard.
Box and a cardboard box is obviously he's thinking about
being Benson and Hedges special Philtre.
Oh my God, lay off it with the cigarettes guys.
Blame an ack. As I say, cracking, cracking
programme with all your, you know, team line UPS there.
Yeah, but as well what I loved about this one I had on my wall
(19:52):
as well. I think my son ripped it off,
but that's OK. So I love your Zack.
Just get that disclaimer in, yeah.
He'll be one of the seconds. Yeah, that.
Poster that came with it. Oh my God, what's that on there?
Is that the is that the teams inthe bottom corner story?
(20:12):
Yeah, that. Great poster.
Yeah, as I said, I don't know who the graphic designer was for
that one, but the colours of Bill, I don't know.
Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, not the most
memorable cut final, I don't think.
No, I think in terms of kind of how we're going to structure
(20:35):
this, do you want to go into, because we've had some people
make some comments about this FACup final episode, haven't we?
Yeah. Do we?
Do we answer the people first ordo we go into our episodes and
then do people at the end? I think we should go for the cup
final, shouldn't we, and go to 93?
Should we do that? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sorry. All right, you've got more
(20:57):
knowledge on this, this final than me, mate.
Yeah, so behind me guys, for those of you that aren't
watching, I have the shirts fromthe FA Cup Final 1993, the day
that Woody burst onto the scene for Sheffield Wednesday.
Obviously the 93 FA Cup final was held between Arsenal and
(21:19):
Sheffield Wednesday, which obviously was a repeat of the
Coca-Cola Cup final earlier on in that year.
That's crazy, yeah. How's the network say it?
Is mad really and a beautiful spectacle for an FA Cup.
However, it was actually one of the lowest attendance at Wembley
(21:42):
for an FA Cup final. OK only. 62,000 which or just
over 62,000 but in terms of a London club and then Sheffield
pretty much emptying in the semifinal for when we played
Sheffield United, I'd have thought it would have probably
been a little bit higher but it's quite an expensive day.
(22:02):
Isn't it? The FA Cup final, yeah.
So looking at we can look at Wednesdays, obviously you know,
if it comes up the road to Wembley, yeah, there you go.
So round three they beat Cambridge United away, round
four Sunderland and five Southend United.
Yeah. Quarter.
Final they drew against Derby away so it went to a replay 11
(22:26):
nil and then semi final Sheffield United neutral ground.
So that road to Wembley there, Imean, looks relatively
straightforward for a Premier League team, doesn't it?
But yeah. It.
Never is because obviously DerbyI mentioned this in our time
added on episode was that that was one hell of a game at the
(22:47):
Baseball Ground and then obviously we'd be in one nil.
But like, I think what what was Arsenal's have you got Arsenal's
road to Wembley there I. Do It's pretty straightforward
as well. Round three, they beat you.
Oval Town 3-1 away. Yeah, Round four.
It was a draw 22 against Leeds at home, so I went to a replay.
It went 3 two. Round five, beat Nottingham
(23:09):
Forest, 2 nil quarterfinal, beatIpswich 4/2 away and then that's
semi final against Tottenham. How's that?
Two derbies in the semi finals, right?
Yeah. Brilliant.
I mean, that would have ruined it, wouldn't it, football
history wise, if Sheffield Wednesday had Tottenham and
Arsenal had Sheffield United. You couldn't script stuff like
(23:29):
that though, could you? And I remember that road to
Wembley for Arsenal because of the good old VHS days.
And I remember seeing Arsenal play at Yeovil and they had the
bruised banana kit. Yeah, I think they wore the
bruised banana kit, Yeovil, because they could have worn the
red, but they wore the yellow and it looked incredible.
And then they wore the bruised banana away at Ipswich I
(23:52):
believe. But I just remember like those
goals from like Ian Wright and Alan Smith and stuff like that,
like they were a hell of a team in 93, so I haven't.
Got the programme with me. I thought I did but I can't find
it so I put it on the screen as well.
Bit of a. I've got it but I can't find it.
Great programme. Better than a 92 one, yeah.
(24:14):
Yeah, absolutely. So Ian Wright, 20th minute, then
David Hurst, 61st minute. Yeah.
Then let's go into the replay. There we go.
Replay not offended. Someone's just knocked that
programme up. Yeah.
And again, I think that's quite harsh on reflection of the
(24:34):
lowest attendance because that'sa Thursday night, isn't it?
Yes, yes it is. You're not.
Going to expect like that's I mean the stat there when they
say it's the lowest attendance still having 62,000 on a
Thursday night at Wembley it's. And I'm I'll be interested to
see The Who is watching it as well, because you mean it's not.
(24:55):
I don't think it with you sayingwouldn't it?
You know, you build up to that Saturday, all, you know, excited
and then you've got, you know, obviously your drawings go into
it. You've got to wait till
Thursday. Yeah, and a little bit of a
secret into my my family here. My little brother was born that
day, 20th of May 1993. So I remember we were me and my
(25:16):
older brother were at home watching that replay when my
little brother came into the world.
So this is for you David. Congratulations, Nick.
So what I found interesting as well, obviously we talked about
before the six hour TV presentation on the Saturday.
Do you reckon they made would have made a bit of a deal on the
Thursday? I will show you.
(25:38):
All right, so you got neighbours.
So you got Neighbours 535? Is that with Harold Bishop or
is? I know it's got Duggars alarm to
discover the theft of value several valuable items.
Then you've got then you've got EastEnders at 6:50.
Oh, they won't be. Wow.
(26:01):
Yeah. Sharon has trouble adjusting to
grounds. Return to the Queen Victoria and
then you've got, at 7:20, the FACup final.
So that would have been a 730 kick off, wouldn't it?
I reckon so, yeah. I had a 10 minute build up.
No, that's what I'm saying. You've got that six hour build
(26:21):
up and then you get to Thursday and you have 10 minutes.
Oh dear. Wow.
Yeah, so you would have had the news and everything.
The Sylvania waters would have been canned as well if it went
to obviously, Yeah, went over time.
So rightly so. Rightly so, yeah, So.
People are went for the news at 9:30.
That would be pretty pissed off.Can you imagine though, being a
(26:43):
fan for that? I mean like, because like I
said, it's expensive to go to the FA Cup final as it is on a
Saturday. There's a there's just South of
80,000 there on the Saturday, finishes 11.
They then make it to a Thursday night.
Someone somewhere must have gone.
This ain't right. This doesn't seem right.
(27:03):
It has to finish on the day, surely?
My goodness, All right. And I said we're going to touch
on some some of the FA Cup songswe used to love.
I used to love a song, FA Cup songs.
I can touch on them as well. So we can do a bit of a bit of a
Top of the Pops. Yeah.
All right, let's get it going, Riff.
(27:24):
All right, so let's start with Arsenals.
In at #1. Actually this was in at #34
Arsenal show for the Gunners. Shout for the Gunners.
I've got a little clip here as well.
I'll play it. It's not.
What are you thinking of that? What do you think it's shouting
(27:46):
for the Gunners? Kevin Campbell in the ear and
right. It's not bad.
Shouting for the gun it's not. Them in the background.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you can almost hear Ian
(28:07):
right there, can't you? All right, so that was at #34
What do you think in Sheffield Wednesday?
Song came Oh please, they had. Where do you think that charted?
65th. Oh sorry mate, did not chart Oh.
Cheers. What the Hell's record if it's
Wednesday? Must be.
Emily. Was it?
This was after Diamond light though.
(28:30):
There you go. Yeah, this one to.
Present, live and direct from Sheffield.
The Greatest? Oh dear.
Yeah, now what I've noticed in these songs as well, they just
like mention all the players names.
Yeah, if not chart. Unfortunately.
(28:53):
I love. I love the CD it's got.
They're all wearing shades on the cover.
Oh, here we go some. Shirtless.
King, I wore her swat on made toswing Jared abuse parks and
hive. Someone is going to feel my
pride. Be all my pride.
Yeah. Again, though, they're they're
(29:14):
almost like borderline cheese, but they still, I say borderline
cheese. They're 100% cheese.
But like, they still work, don'tthey?
And like, they're, I mean, that sounds almost as though like one
of those kind of guys sat in a shopping mall on a keyboard,
doesn't it? You know, it's got it on like
hip hop mode. So yeah, Arsenal, you know, it'd
(29:37):
be Wednesday in the in the songsthere, the Top of the Pops on.
That subject though, Jonesy, do you think back then it was
compulsory for a club to releasean FA Cup song I.
Reckon sorry because pretty muchup till 99 every team did.
Because what do you think? It was just a club's way of
going here? Are we going to have a few quid
air sell ACD? Oh.
(29:58):
I reckon, sorry, because some ofit you've got, we'll go through
it, some of the positions some of the songs got to, There
wouldn't be a bit of money back then as well, none of the
streaming business. So cassette or CE the actual the
the cup final for this one in 93was delayed by half an hour on
the Saturday. Did you know that the kickoff?
(30:20):
Yeah. What was the what was going on?
Because there was an. Accident on the M1.
So it was the first. Yeah.
It was the first FA Cup final not to kick off on time since
19/19/23. Wow.
OK. So that's an unsettling stat
because obviously there's an accident involved in it.
But yeah, is there any events for that?
(30:43):
Fine on it, yeah. Absolutely.
All right. How many memories of 94 were you
interested? Build up to it.
I think I yeah. Yeah, I remember the programme
for this one though, because it was like almost like just a
black programme. Oh, there you go.
(31:04):
Yeah, look at that. The smoking on the back as well.
The smoking was. Interesting.
Oh God, yeah, I can remember that.
I used to like. How they just like, you know,
get out for the that looks like.A sticker book.
So whoever put this through like.
How much was the How much was the programme made to say on the
(31:26):
front 5? Pounds.
Wow. See Searching.
For the mate. Why does that sound so good in
your accent as well When you saysearching for the amber nectar
mate, no one. Drinks Fosters, they don't even
sell it. Do they not?
Not real comes out every now andthen, gets deleted.
(31:50):
Sorry to, you know, burst. My bubble 1st A bubble.
Honestly though mate, everything's advert wise.
That 94 sticker book. This is why I get the
programmes. I still buy them.
Yeah, brilliant. I mean this is 114 pages.
Wow for a fiver. And again guys, if you're not
(32:14):
collecting programmes or like the FA Cup final specials,
you're missing out. If you love a bit of nostalgia
and stuff, player profiles, the road to the final, some top
class adverts, you can find themquite cheap.
They can't you? Yeah.
Absolutely. There's so much detail in that.
I reckon by the time you've readit, the cup final be over like
(32:36):
it was this content heavy in there.
I wrote to Wembley for that one.Let's have a look.
So let's have a look at Chelsea's.
OK, so they had a few replays inthere.
So round three they drew away against Barnett.
Yeah. And the replay, they beat
(32:56):
Barnett 4 nil. Round four.
Your boys, Drew? Yeah, Drew Hein with Sheffield
Wednesday in the replay, they beat in 3-1.
How are you there? Oxford United round 5 away, 21
quarterfinals, Wolves one nil and I've got the semi final
programme somewhere. Against Luton, they won two nil.
(33:16):
I I completely forgot that game.Yeah, that Chelsea Luton game.
Sorry to Luton fans, sorry to Chelsea fans.
I completely forgot that match existed that.
Must have been. You must have been thinking back
then that obviously from the from the 9310, this must be
normal. Sheffield Wednesday must get to
finals every year, yeah. I was sort of like tuning in on
(33:40):
the the final day going I'll Sheffield gonna come out in a
minute like Chelsea. And Manchester United's, let's
have a look, pretty straightforward.
Beat your beat your rivals. Sheffield United away, knocked
them out of round three, round four that beat Norwich away.
Round 5 Wibbledon away quarterfinals against Charlton
(34:02):
at home 31 and then obviously the I've got the programme here
as well, the semi finals againstOldham.
So drew in the first one and then the replay beat them 4/1.
Was that replay, Was that game played at main road?
The replay? I think the replay of that game
was played somewhere else because I think the first game
(34:23):
was played at Wembley, wasn't it?
Or was it? That's true, yeah.
Replay was at Main Road. You're right.
See. The semi final at Wembley.
All decisions. Yeah.
That's it. Main Rd Owen, Konchelskis,
Robson and Giggs first final forManchester United since 1990.
(34:47):
They have a. Clear winning final though, this
one mate, wasn't it I've got. The thing on here as well, what
do you think? The kids.
Beautiful. Again, you've displayed this so
well by the way, Jamesy, like I could just stare at these
graphics. Well, I.
Thought, you know, if we're going to talk about kits,
programmes, everything, attendance, getting all into
one, kind of absolutely yeah, beautiful.
(35:07):
Watching on Spotify and YouTube.I've put everything in one thing
so you can have a look at the kits, the programme, Big
attendance 79634 and it was justManchester United left it late,
didn't I? Yeah, I mean, this was Glenn
Hardall's Chelsea, wasn't it? Was it the famous image of
(35:29):
Hardall taking his? He was on the bench, wasn't he?
And he was undoing his I've got to bring myself on.
Because obviously this was his first season at Chelsea, wasn't
it? Because he'd gone from Swindon
to Chelsea, still hadn't officially hung up his boots.
But to get to the FA Cup final, because obviously he was player
(35:49):
manager at Swindon, player manager at Chelsea, Wembley in
two successive seasons, that's pretty impressive, right?
Yeah, did he put himself on in the 68th minutes?
So let's go back to it. So 68th minutes.
Sorry. Oh, there we go.
So Canton are scored a penalty in the 61st, 67th, another
(36:13):
penalty and he's like I got to get on.
I don't think soon as he's come on, Marcus has scored in the
69th minute. Yeah, well, I'm glad.
Yeah, the. Floodgates opened, but looking.
At the highlights on on YouTube and that one he sat on the van,
he suddenly just start the tracksuit.
It's like sometime, yeah, I wonder because I've seen that
clip and I wonder if he like, expects like an ultimate roar
(36:35):
come from Chelsea, like Glenn's coming on.
Because what did he have on the bench?
So he had they had Kevin Hitchcock.
Yeah, Clay, how old Tony Cascarino was the only so only
three Subs? Yeah, Cascarino would have done
a job, but maybe they were lacking that creative spark in
the middle. Maybe.
Yeah, he came. On for John, for Mike Stain,
(36:58):
Mark. Stain got they took a striker
off. Yeah, wow, Yeah.
OK. There you go.
All right, 94. Done.
Want to have a touch on the Cup?Final songs for this one go.
On Yeah. All right, OK, let's go for
Chelsea. OK, so Chelsea's won, but no one
(37:20):
can stop us now. OK, I've got that one.
Well, they did. There you.
Go. This is a good one.
I like this one. Yeah.
Look at that. What a riff.
This is that pickup song. What do you think?
I like this. It's all right.
(37:42):
Wow. Yeah, I like that one.
That's a That's a epic up final song.
Yeah, that's a. Bit like, what's that new kids
on the block like hand tough, not bad, yeah.
(38:02):
That's all right. So that came in the number that
charted X-23, you know. I'd expect better from the
British public with that one, I'm afraid.
Where do you reckon Manchester United 1 came?
5th Was it status quo? Oh it.
Came first. Come on your heads.
Yeah, do you know what this was? This song did my head in at
school. I'm going to play it for you.
(38:25):
Oh, cheers. Yeah, typical.
Status quo, yeah. Again, it's just that kind of
like guitar leaning forward, leaning back, like, yeah.
That's it. I remember.
Yeah, used to hear this one all the time.
Again, though, obviously it cameto.
(38:45):
Number one, yeah, I've. Matured.
That's an absolute banger. Now here we.
Go here we. Go yes.
Good song. This is my favourite part.
(39:06):
Yeah, I remember it so well. Yeah, You know, funny thing,
Jones, the other day, mate, I was actually in Manchester.
I was walking around the city centre and there was a lot of
Athletico Bilbao fans still looming from the Europa League,
right? And there was one guy on a
motorised scooter with a subwoofer on the back playing
that. Oh.
(39:27):
No. Oh, it was genius.
I love that song. That's 2 great FA Cup songs
there. Yeah, yeah.
Well done, mate. Good choice.
Yeah, they. Had a good season 94 All right
95. We just touched on that,
obviously on holding the Backpage Everton Manchester
United look. Paul ride out leaping like a
(39:47):
salmon mate. So you.
Look at Everton's road to to Wembley right?
They didn't concede a goal untilthe semi final.
Yeah, there you go. So Jurgen Klinsmann, so they.
Beat Derby in the round three athome, one nil, Bristol City
away, one nil. Norwich to be in my home, 5 nil.
Wow what a final. Big Newcastle one nil at home
and then the semi fine. I love that semi final.
(40:09):
Hang on a minute mate. Round five, would that have been
what? Was Mike Walker still at Everton
at that point? Oh, I wonder because.
That would have. Been a hell of a return.
He was axed. He was, He was.
He was axed in November. No.
(40:30):
So right. OK.
And everything. Question, do you think you have
to have an easy run in the FA Cup to be successful?
It helps, doesn't it? Because I'm looking at these so
far, I mean, I'm looking at a lot of them.
Yeah. I've done my research into the
(40:50):
latter parts of the year, but the early 90s, a lot of the
teams that made it that far kindof had a little bit more of a
luckier run. I'm not saying easy.
Well, Manchester United's not your, not your, not your rivals
out there. So they knocked out Sheffield
United way 2 nil round four. I've got a story about this.
(41:11):
Well, a memory. So they beat Wrexham 5/2, right?
I remember my PE teacher in school was a Wrexham fan.
Yeah. He went to this game.
Yeah. What?
PE. He can PE, Right?
And we had to sit and watch thisgame for PE.
What teacher? Yeah.
I wanted to play outside, though, so that's my memories of
(41:32):
that one. So they beat Wrexham, Old
Traffic to 52. Great game.
No. And I'm like, you think about
it, You're like, I watched Matchof the Day in school for a
lesson. Yeah.
Yeah. So I remember that.
It's funny. Though, isn't it mate?
Actually, you know, Wrexham now with their kind of history that
they've got obviously with the Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcaleny,
it's almost like their history before that.
(41:55):
I wouldn't say it's forgotten, but it's almost like people
didn't know Wrexham existed before.
Like the. Mickey Thomas goal against
things like that. Yeah, they had a.
They had a very good side and they always seemed to kind of
mix it up in the FA Cup, didn't they?
They did well. Yeah, let's have a look at you.
So round five they beat leads away 31 quarterfinal, they beat
(42:15):
QPR at home and then that semi final Crystal Palace 22.
Was that Roy Keane's stamp on? It was on Gareth Southgate,
yeah. And then the.
Semi final replay did 1-2 nil because that was a.
Veil apart that one. How good were they?
Neutral grounds. Beautiful.
(42:36):
Yeah, Yeah. All right.
And. Then the cup final.
I've got the programme here as well.
Great kits as well. Oh, another one, though, Everton
wore their new shirt. Thank you.
I was going to tell you that, yeah.
Come on, I find that. Weird.
I I liked both kits. I liked the other one though,
because I remember watching thisone and they came out in a
(42:57):
different kit and I was a littlebit confused.
I was like why are they doing this?
Because the. Next season I had that with
Danko instead of NEC. Yeah, yeah.
I like the home kit for that season.
There you. Go, I've got the.
I like this one, this, this programme.
Look at this. This is a programme.
Look at that. Yeah, that's, that's a beauty.
(43:18):
Yeah. Cover the back as well.
Littlewoods Pool programme. Yeah, like content.
Here we go. 100 and 115 pages this one.
Jeez, there's still there's still the little Littlewoods
quick picks if anyone wants to do the polls.
Still in the polls. Polls the quick fix 10.
The slip's still in there. It's a great programme.
(43:42):
Final wasn't that great, to be honest.
It was no. Because I, I remember, yeah, it
just, I was like, hold on, Everton.
It was almost like it was a filmfor me, you know, like Man
United was so big that they werewinning everything and everyone
was like, they're never going tobe, they're never going to lose
to Everton. But yeah, I can just remember,
(44:04):
like, Paul Rideout's header, it almost like where I said he
leapt like a salmon. He generally hovered in the air.
And just, like, it didn't even seem like a powerful header.
No. Do you know what I mean?
It was a bit kind of like it was.
It was odd, but they had a good.Yeah.
Neville self, well he got men onthe match and that.
(44:26):
Right. At least though.
Hell of a keeper. I always remember true.
Do you remember the after game interviews when the players
would line up and then they'll get interviewed?
Do you remember, have you seen the one with Nepal Southpaw?
Oh, he's going to go back if he's going to go to the, you
know, the team banquet afterwards.
And he says if you spend as muchtime with these lads as as I do,
(44:46):
you'd want to go home. So in the, you know, my notes
here have got so Southall voted the man of the match, an
isolated figure as he was stood alone in the Wembley tunnel and
watched the team coach depart. He went.
He went back home to flanded No.All right, OK.
(45:06):
Which again, is a journey from Wembley, right?
He could have got like, at leasta bit of a way there.
Yeah. I remember though, that FA Cup
season, because that was the season that Tottenham started as
banned from the cup, weren't they?
But they were readmitted. Yeah, you're right.
Yeah, and they made. It to the semis to play Everton,
didn't they? Because that was the famous game
(45:28):
where Daniel Amicacci basically Subs himself on, doesn't he?
Brings himself. On I don't know how he did that.
Yeah, that wasn't one where you're thinking, yeah, Spurs
against to the final, Klinsmann sharing him like what a team.
Yeah, crazy. But yeah, good, good result for
that FA Cup final though. Have you got the top of the pops
(45:51):
on these guys? Sure do.
I'll have a go quickly. All right, so we'll look at
Everton. So that came to 24th in the
charts with all together. Do you remember this one by the
farm? There we go.
That wasn't evident. This is at the Yeah.
So there's by the farm all together now.
(46:12):
So they changed a bit of a changed a cup of the lyrics.
Here we go. Yeah, because about 60.
Singing. Out of farm.
Did he just They won the cup with Catterick.
(46:34):
That's what I thought it says and then there's talks about
candles, boys winning the FA Cupin 84.
Well. Yeah, winning the cup with
Cattericks. Absolutely.
All right, So surprise, surprise, Manchester United.
Where do you reckon they came inthe charts lower.
(46:54):
I'm going to say lower this timeround that came. 15th All right
with I didn't like this one. There we go.
We're going to do it again. There we go.
Here we go, here we. Go.
Here we go again. Again.
(47:17):
Again. It's a bit Beastie Boys.
Yeah, sorry. Yeah, get rid of that one.
Jonesy, I'm sorry but I think Woody is going to go immediately
to Spotify and download 90s FA Cup albums following this
episode. Mate, you.
Can still get the CDs on. Some of them are still working
(47:39):
though, like I had the Liverpool.
Pass on, move on. We're going to talk about that
next. I've got that somewhere.
I don't know where it is. OK all.
Right, I like that. Yeah, bring back the songs.
That was the final appearance, though, for Paul Ince and Mark
Hughes. Wasn't it 95 for Man United?
Yeah. Can Chelsea might as well.
Yeah, yeah, changes. Had to be made.
(48:01):
Beat massive fallout after that wasn't it?
I think I showed that article a few weeks ago where it says
Cantona was to blame for what hesaid.
So put everything on Cantona. Yet last week he was defending
him against Jimmy Hill, calling him a prat.
Yes. And then the next season, he,
you know, he wins, he wins them the league, doesn't he?
(48:23):
Good all. Right. 96 right?
It's a. Special one, yeah.
This is this is yours, isn't it?So excited with this one joint
is road to Wembley. I think this I think the road
was better than the actual finalto be honest.
You only seen any info on this one?
(48:46):
I've got a. Couple of bits, mate.
I'll, I'll let you have this moment.
Yeah, let's go. To the road to Wembley, because
I remember right. So round three would beat
Rochdale. Whoa, 7 nil.
Here we go. So this is an easy Rd isn't it?
Round 4, Shrewsbury away. I remember being nervous for
this game. I don't know why.
I think because it's an FA Cup and we're away.
But we beat Shrewsbury Town 4 nil around 5, beat Charlton at
(49:09):
home 21 and the quarterfinal nilagainst leads away.
And then we beat them comfortably in the semi final of
the quarterfinal replay. And then semi final we smashed
Villa, probably Fowler, yeah. So it's not a bad Rd easy, you
know, just that quarterfinal, but comfortable.
Yeah, yeah. I wouldn't say that's a
(49:31):
relatively easy Rd mate. That one.
I just might be really nervous for some reason.
I got that Shrewsbury Town 1. I don't know why.
I think, I think it may be a weekend of kind of might be cup
upsets. Yeah.
Against slow teens and I just remember, but we just smashed
them. So yeah.
Manchester United. So round 3 drew against
Sunderland, 22 high, our replay beat them away. 21 round four
(49:57):
beat Reading. I was there.
I was at Elm Park for that one. You're on the road to Wembley
where you were. Yeah, I can.
Remember how massive that was, by the way, That was huge in all
of the papers locally, it was massive.
I even remember the hotel where they stayed.
I. Think they stayed, I think, I
(50:18):
think they stayed at the Caversham Park Hotel, which was
on the on the Thames near where the red and festivals held.
But I can just remember right watching them warm up.
I've got such vivid memories of this game because obviously that
was like Andy Cole, Steve Bruce Schmeichel, like they just
looked absolutely colossus. And it was almost like it had
(50:41):
the feeling of like a testimonial game.
It felt like they were doing redin a favour by turning up.
Does that make sense? Yeah.
Oh, because you've got that feel.
It's just like, yeah. It didn't feel like a cup game.
It was like Man United are in town.
It's like, wow. But yeah, looking back now, I
would love to just have like that moment of what that game
(51:04):
must have felt like again, just to be it.
It was incredible. Memory, yeah.
Brilliant So. Round 5 they beat Manchester
City at home, 21 quarterfinals they beat Southampton 2 nil and
in the semi final they beat Chelsea 21.
Let's have a look at their kits. What are we wearing that?
(51:24):
Yeah, not good memories of that kit to be honest.
And I'm going to talk about thatprogramme.
Look how shit that programme is.Considering they started picking
up a little bit in terms of the quality, that one looked awful.
This one looks like I've done like I've made in school.
Look, is it, what is it? Is it Cliff?
Art? Word Art Cliff.
Art. Yeah, yeah.
(51:46):
It's that real shadow underneath.
Yeah. That look good.
Does it? That's better.
Look at that. Life is a game, and we all know
which one. Oh, I'm broke.
Oh yeah. But great programme though.
You've got like lots of detail, but that cover, look at that.
Someone signed up on that and how many pages this.
Is. Beefy 114.
(52:10):
I'm just from 14. We're noticing the trend.
Here mate, it's like there's 100and 15114 every FA Cup it's.
Great though you like remember this album?
Yeah, yeah. The Euro 96 on Yeah.
Oh wow, what a thumber ahead though after this.
(52:30):
I love that. I used to love this as well.
Put the team photos in like yeah.
Brilliant as well. You couldn't take that out of
the programme though and put on your wall, could you?
Or could you? I like.
It's just good as well. Come on.
Yeah. Brilliant.
You Reds. Which one?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good programme.
The final, though. Go on I.
(52:52):
Think it's the first time I got upset.
It's. Therapy, Jonesy, talk to me.
Come on. Thanks.
Just no one's listening. We're going to talk about those
suits. How can I forget?
Go on. I've.
Got. Diamani suits.
Yeah, cream. Yeah.
(53:13):
Yeah. And white shoes picked by.
David James, who signed on to bea.
Yeah, A. Model, yeah.
I mean, that was his kind of hisera, wasn't it Of, I mean, he's
a good looking guy, but obviously he featured heavily in
the fashion world at that point, didn't they?
And that was, was that the birthof spice boys at that point?
(53:33):
I think so, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I saw a clip where
Ferguson was commentating he's just like, what the hell were
they wearing? And I think he knew they had
them beat. That would be, like, really
comforting, wouldn't it, for Ferguson?
What did he say? He goes.
He saw the players in there and then he looked to Roy Evans and
Ronnie Moran and they were in traditional suits and he's just
like, yeah. Oh, what?
(53:55):
They weren't wearing cream suitswith them?
They. Were wearing they were wearing
black suits like I see. Now I'm not being funny.
If I was the manager, I'd have aword there if I didn't have the
minerals to wear the same suit myself, like come on, you'd have
to have a word, wouldn't? You Uncle Roy, Wasn't he uncle?
Roy Yeah, he was. That was a bit of a boring final
(54:16):
though, wouldn't it? Yeah, not much happening.
All the hype. I remember being excited.
I think I watched the entire 6-7hours coverage of that.
Yeah. And then the what?
What time was the count of our goal?
Second-half, first half. Yeah, it was 85th minute. 85th I
didn't know it was that. Late.
Yeah, just over 79,000 attendants as well.
(54:38):
Again. 79 when it's in a trend well, that was it mate, we.
Know how that finished I had theshirt it's not one of my
favourites I guess because of the memory I don't know all
right do I have a quick squeeze of the the cup songs as well
Quickly yeah let's. Go for it.
Yeah. All right, let's.
Go for Man United's first. So came to #6 Do you remember
(55:01):
this one? Move, move, move.
The red tribe? No.
I'll play for you then. You remember that?
No. Move, move, move.
There you go. Yeah.
(55:22):
No, no. It looked like a.
Full boy band on the on the cover, right?
Just in the casual it does. The Blazing squad, yes.
Let's get to the chorus. No.
All right, we're not missing outon much or any, but again.
(55:42):
There's something in that track that makes me want to listen to
it again there. You go available on eBay.
All right, So Liverpool brought obviously pass and move, right?
So Manchester United came in at.They're dead A-Team, aren't
they? You know, Yeah, yeah, right.
Number six, where do you reckon the Liverpool song came?
Oh, 20s. Wow, wow, there we go.
(56:10):
I had this one, I could say I think I have CD as well.
I love this song. I'll play it for you.
Remember this one? Russia scored more than all the
reps jump ONS. Of course there is.
Playing with the Razor. The old store of, like, break
(56:35):
dancing, yeah. Oh, I love that song.
I tell you how on. Earth did that get to #4 Jamesy
4 in the. Charts, yeah.
I don't know. I remember being so excited
going down to Woolworths with mypocket money and buying it.
Wall West, Yeah. And I and I think they had a
(56:55):
display as well. They had the next to the
Manchester United one. Yeah, yeah.
Unbelievable. But yeah, shit final great song.
Yeah. And a great road to Wembley.
But yeah, just the final was so I was remember, so disappointed.
Yeah, yeah, All right. Numbers 97.
(57:19):
Remember much about this one? Yeah, obviously this is Rude
Hoodet's little era at Chelsea, isn't it?
So he was the first foreign manager to lead out a team in FA
Cup history? Yeah, so tell you.
Tell you my I think I told you my one.
My memories are this one, watching outside Dixon's window.
Yes, I. Wasn't I wasn't watching this
(57:42):
one and I remember the roar whenDi Matteo scored like. 43
seconds or 42 seconds or something that wasn't something
like that. Yeah, so I just, that's my
memory of that one. What about yourself?
Again, this one. Did I watch this one?
I think I did. I think I did.
It wasn't, Again, one of those ones that it wasn't a big
(58:02):
blockbuster of a final in my mind.
And again, that's no disrespect to Middlesbrough because
obviously this was Middlesbrough's first season in
the Premier League. Wasn't it 96?
They got to the League Cup finalas well, didn't he?
Yeah, he did everything, the League Cup final, FA Cup and got
relegated. Yeah, I mean, that was a hell of
a season for a Borough fan because you were Wembley twice
and then still get relegated. I remember again, I think
(58:25):
probably this one was more synonymous with the build up to
the FA Cup final, obviously the Chesterfield semi final at Old
Trafford, the Sean Daish penalty, you know, and then the
replay. Yeah, the Hillsborough, which
didn't make sense, but there yougo.
(58:45):
Chelsea. 'S Road to Wembley that there we
go. Round 3 W Brom 3 nil, Round
four. I remember being pissed off with
this game, like they beat Liverpool at home, 4/2.
I think we went to. I was, yeah.
We just, yeah, crumbled. I was so angry.
(59:07):
Yeah. Because no, no one wants to go
out in round four, do you? Round three, Round four, No.
Yeah. Get a little bit forever.
Yeah, then Leicester away, they drew round five against
Leicester away, 22 beat them in the replay at home, one nil,
quarterfinal 41 against Portsmouth away and then the
semi final against Wimbledon, 3 nil.
I've got the programme somewhere, I don't know where it
(59:27):
is for that semi final that was.A hybrid, wasn't it?
I. Think so, yeah.
I didn't have A and they. Both played in their away kits.
Oh, there you go. So.
Chelsea wore yellow and Wimbledon wore red, and to watch
that Highbury was weird. Weird.
Yeah. Because yeah, like I think when
(59:50):
you watch FA Cup semi finals at like Villa Park or Old Trafford,
you still get the gist that it'sOld Trafford and Villa Park.
But they make it look neutral, don't they?
Yeah, yeah. Absolutely.
You know what? I.
Mean whereas I saw at Highbury and you see like all of the red
posts in the stadium and the stands and the dugout, it just
(01:00:11):
looked too Arsenal for a neutralground.
But if that sounds Billy or not though, yeah.
And then obviously that scoreboard as well, that's just,
you could pick an Arsenal game, yeah, that's cool.
But in the corner, yeah, it looks strange.
All right. So let's look at Middlesbrough.
So round three smash Chester City 6 nil, Round four, smash.
(01:00:32):
Round four beat Hensworth Town away 32, Round 5 big Manchester
City away one nil. Quarterfinal against Derby away
2 nil. And then obviously we just
touched on the semi final three, all against Chesterfield, and
then they beat them in the replay as well.
I love that semi final. I was so, yeah, Chesterfield
like. Incredible.
(01:00:54):
I wanted. Them to win so much so yeah.
Yeah, that was an incredible semi final, that one.
I haven't got the programme herefor this one.
What are you thinking in the kids?
OK. That's like a, that's like a
Sabutio pack, that one and thosetwo like the red and the blue
like plane. Not a lot going on there, no.
(01:01:16):
So Chelsea won two nil. Di Mateo, first minute, then
Eddie Newton, 83rd minute 79. 1000 again, yeah.
Had a bigger, had a bigger attendance than the Manchester
United, Liverpool game. But have you had that Chelsea
course I meant to ask you? I've got that one.
I've got the home and away of that one.
(01:01:38):
Does the sponsor come off easily?
Yes. Yes, yeah, yes, yeah.
I've actually still got a littlebit of a well, I've actually got
a better sponsor on this one, but I have seen some of them
that look awful. Yeah.
Scratch card. I got it.
I remember it's when I got sensory.
I remember hoping in it and obviously they haven't folded it
(01:01:58):
prior and it's kind of rubbed together.
Yeah, yeah, I remember opening it and it was just like, it's
like a scratch card. And I was like, no, you know, I
was so devastated I had to sell it cheap.
Oh, yeah. Back then, your kids were shit
with their. Yeah, yeah, take note.
(01:02:20):
But yeah, as I said. Memorable final Oh, he's a Dean
Mateo, right? Do you think that early goal,
that early goal kind of killed it, doesn't it?
Yeah. It does really.
You get an early. Cup final goal and it's just
yeah. No, no want to touch.
On the songs quickly. Yeah, let's do it.
(01:02:42):
Yeah. All right, Chelsea.
I love these bits. Oh, they still play this now at
Stanford. This one.
Yeah, this is the banner. So it was Socks with the Chelsea
team. Blue Dave.
Yeah, yeah. Good.
(01:03:05):
Song good. Song Do you like this one?
Yeah, yeah. So yeah.
So they still play that one? Yeah, they.
Do yeah. Oh.
Excellent. So yeah, there you go.
So that came in at #22 OK, so Middlesbrough.
That deserves higher, I'm afraid, yeah.
All right, so we won't track in Middlesbrough, right?
Higher. Lower.
(01:03:27):
Lower all right. Surprise, surprise, it came in
at #12. Middlesbrough.
FC Chris Rea and Bob Mortimer. Let's dance.
There we go. Have you seen?
You have to watch the video for? There we go.
Just turn it up, Bob Mortimer. The video is so cheap.
(01:03:56):
Oh my God, I think the. Chris Rea factor must have got
into #12. And Shooting Stars was pretty
big then. No one that yeah there.
We go it. Sounds as though Chris Rea has
taken it quite seriously though here.
And like, Bob Morton is, like, just shouting in the background.
(01:04:18):
Yeah, I'll weird that one. Yeah.
During the week, I'll share the share the video because the
Middlesbrough one, they're literally just the players are
just like. Yeah.
But yeah, great song, I guess. Yeah, that's all right.
I didn't mind that one, right? Nobody.
'S writing these down because he's going to be collecting
(01:04:39):
these cup finals. This is his new collection now.
No joke. Honestly, some of these ones I
actually really like. To be fair.
We're moving on to a good one now, though.
We're in 1998, right? Yeah.
I reckon, I think that's quite good before we are on there and
end of an era. So this was the the first FA Cup
final to be on ITVBBC. Lost the rights, still had the
(01:05:01):
highlights but no more Dez got Bob Wilson.
Nothing wrong with Bob Wilson. I love the Champions league
coverage. I think it was great.
When I'm thinking Champions League during the during the
90s, I think of Bob Wilson. Yeah, Jim Rosenthal as well.
Jim. Rosenthal Yeah, I was going to
say, what are you? Thinking Do you remember this?
One, yeah, I do. Yeah, I do.
(01:05:22):
This was obviously Arsene Wenger's surge to greatness,
wasn't it? It was Arsenal, Newcastle,
Wembley. I can remember this being a
baking hot day because obviouslythe huge build up Arsenal had, I
think they must have had, I think.
Was it Hugo Boss? They were wearing some smart
(01:05:44):
suits because I remember like them wearing it with like
sunglasses and it was like a almost like a purple kind of
blue suit. Wasn't it players?
From both sides wore Hugo Boss was it?
Hugo Boss for both, yeah, I meana great final.
I'm very interested again into the the runnings to these.
Have you you've got the the build up to both of these as
(01:06:06):
well. Absolutely.
All right, let's start with arsenals.
I think this is a This is a tough one.
This is weird because I've Yeah, yeah, go on mate Round. 3A home
draw against Port Vale. Round three replay away.
Draw with Port Vale and beat thefour three on penalties.
Round four beat Middlesbrough away 21.
Round five nil, nil draw againstCrystal Palace at home, then
(01:06:29):
went to a replay, beat them two.One quarter final drew with West
Ham at home 11. Yeah the replay away 11 yeah
beat them 43IN penalties and then they beat wolves in the
semi finals one nil so that. Is 1 hell of a slog to get to
Wembley in there. So lovely replay after replay
(01:06:51):
after replay and I remember the Wolves game and I have got some
some comments from some litmus about this one.
I. Mean, yeah, I mean it took it to
penalties to beat Port Vale. Yeah, yeah.
Newcastle's one was a little biteasier though, right?
Beat Everton. One nil away, yes, Stevenage
(01:07:13):
driven Stevenage. This is weird right?
Because everyone's second favourite team in the 90s was
Newcastle, right? Yeah, but suddenly this
Stevenage game everyone wanted, is this where the.
Sun started sponsoring the kit, wasn't it?
Yeah, it. Was just so much coverage about
this one so and I think Newcastle went in there with the
(01:07:33):
attitude we're just going to smash them and then get back on
the bus and go but they drew yeah at all and then they went
to a replay stage 21 around 5 Trevor Rovers beat them at home
yeah so it's quite actually yeahquite easy run at Barnsley three
one at home in the quarterfinalsand Sheffield United in the semi
final one nil see I. Watched the semi final
(01:07:57):
highlights recently for Newcastle and that just
encapsulated everything gloriousabout English football in the
90s. That game, If you haven't
watched it, watch the highlightson YouTube if you can.
Tackles flying in everywhere, right?
It is such an intense, like route one classic game of
(01:08:19):
English football. Both sets of fans well up for it
right as David Batty, Alan Shearer.
Shearer's goal was a bit scrappybecause obviously it's a header
that saved and then he hits the follow up in.
But there's Stuart Pierce. Like unbelievable, like game.
It really was. But yeah, it's a classic example
(01:08:39):
of English football, that one. Real scrappy flying in
challenges. I'll have to.
Check it out all right, let's get on to the cup final.
So there you go. So it's a 2 nil win from Arsenal
over Mars 23rd minute and then Annika 69th Which?
They both tore the Premier League apart that year, didn't
they? Those two?
Yep. Sorry, attendance was 79,800 up
(01:09:02):
183 and pretty bog standard programme, nothing special great
kit. Kit.
So so I put a kit it's a long sleeve one.
What do you reckon in long sleeve?
So this was a cup final long sleeve.
Really nice. Yeah it's different, isn't it?
But that's. In the days where the captain
chose the sleeve length for Arsenal, wasn't it?
(01:09:23):
So you very rarely see a long sleeve but and that.
I like the Newcastle shirt. My brother had that shirt.
Yeah, I've. Got that?
It's beautiful, Yeah. It's beautiful, yeah.
But nothing. Memorable.
Like, yeah, just. I just remember my brother was
devastated. Do you what?
(01:09:44):
Do you do you remember do you remember the build up to this
though, because Alan Shearer almost didn't play do you
remember that? And the reason being so he he
was videoed a game at Leicester and that was just before the FA
Cup final. He was videoed kicking Neil
Lennon in the head of. Course.
(01:10:08):
So he actually he escaped the bam because they deemed it as
not premeditated but he was close.
It was touch and go that he would actually make the final
and I completely forgot about that.
Yeah, I'm sure we'll touch on that in a yeah, sorry, one time,
(01:10:28):
yeah. But yeah, you've got the songs,
right. Please tell me you've got the
songs. Sorry, that gave up.
Of course I do all right. This is one of your.
Favourites, wasn't it? Yeah.
So going in at #9 was Arsenal FACup squad 98 hot stuff there.
Donna Stammer. There we go.
(01:10:51):
Oh. Here we go.
Yeah. There we go #9 did all right,
It's it's. Yeah, great football *.
Right, right, right. Walking in a fur camp
(01:11:15):
Wonderland. I've got to show you.
I've got to show you dancing. Go on mate, but.
Maracas, there we go. Oh.
I like that. Great song.
(01:11:36):
Great song all. Right, Newcastle's not.
Obviously that came in at #9 Newcastle's.
Jimmy Nails. Yeah, I actually I struggled to
find this one, but still, where do you reckon it came in the
charts? Oh, 30s?
There came. 50 black and white army.
So it's the Black and White Armywritten by Sting.
(01:11:58):
If he sang it. Wow.
Yeah, I don't think he sang it. I'll play it for you.
He. Didn't want to be a snow shaded
to it. Here we go.
It's it's like a. He's in there.
Oh, you think about this one. There is sting in that.
(01:12:26):
And I jumped out of bed. I didn't have to wear my Oh
yeah, yeah, I'll turn that on. Black Jersey.
It's a black and white jersey. Yeah.
It took me a while to find that one, to be honest, because I've
never heard that one. Hot stuff.
(01:12:47):
Yeah. All over it, yeah.
Definitely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So Arsenal won the battle, they won the cup and they won the
chat position as well. Yeah.
All right, let's go to the last 1/19/99.
Nine, we said this before. Yeah, I was going to say you.
Brought it up, didn't you? The the build up, everything was
(01:13:08):
focused on something else, wasn't it?
Was do you think it was just, well, Arsenal?
Man United's rivalry was in fullswing this season, wasn't it?
And I think possibly, I might bewrong, but I think the semi
final overshadowed the final forthis one.
Personally, I just think that the the significance of that
(01:13:30):
particular game, the Ryan Giggs goal, the match at Villa Park
was huge. That was all over the news.
And then obviously their March on to Champions League for Man
United. I think the FA Cup was seen as a
bit more of a get it out of the way.
Like we want Champions League tobe honest.
I think I've got that feeling aswell.
Small Champions League, wasn't it because he.
(01:13:50):
Rested a few players, didn't he for that for this final, but I
mean still an incredible like incredible victory for Man
United in terms of the three but.
Yeah, let's have a look at that road.
Yeah, that's another one I was pissed off with.
Oh. My God.
So that's a Rd tough Rd as well.So round four and they beat
(01:14:14):
Middlesbrough at home. Three, one.
Round four beat Liverpool 21. Well, yeah, there you go.
There's my, there's my FA Cup dreams over.
Round 4 again, yeah. It's pissed off.
Round five beat Fulham at home, one nil quarterfinal home draw
against Chelsea, went to a replay in the quarters. 2 nil
win and then the semi final. Nil all draw and then obviously
(01:14:37):
that semi final. Wow, that Do you know what that
makes the treble more impressive?
Even more so, yeah, even more so.
To go through replays as well and to still like challenge in
Champions League and Premier League, that's incredible.
They did well, didn't they? Let's have a look at the 2
(01:14:59):
armies yeah there we go so roundthree beat Crystal Palace at
home 21 around 3 Bradford City 3nil at home round 5 drew at home
against round five they they drew a Blackburn nil nil.
Round five replay away Rovers they beat one nil quarterfinal
they'll beat Everton at home 41 and semi final beat Tottenham.
(01:15:22):
Yeah, I. Remember that?
Yeah, let's say here we go. Oh those kids though, so sharing
them and skulls. I love that.
Newcastle should I? And you've got that Manchester
United wondering. Yeah, I mean, so famously, yes,
glorious in it. So famously.
Rude Hollett requested white socks to be worn with black trim
(01:15:46):
for this game because his previous FA Cup visits and
victories all included white socks.
So Rude Hollett specifically requested Newcastle to wear
white. Yeah, we don't give.
This enough credit, mate, because Rude Hull is.
I mean, look at that. That's a zoom in of the cup,
right? Yeah.
(01:16:06):
Yeah. Oh, was it?
I thought I look like the trophy.
Yeah, no. More Little Woods.
Little Woods has gone. AXA, right?
But yeah, I mean, Rude Hullet deserves a special mention here
because this is third mention, an FA Cup final.
So I mean, oh, third or second? Hang on, I think.
It was second. It was Chelsea.
Yeah, 2. 2 because he was 97. Sorry, not 94.
(01:16:28):
My mistake. Yeah.
But yeah, two mentions of leading the team out in
succession for two different teams is pretty impressive.
So you're right, Manchester United decided to rest several
stale players for the match so they could be fit for the
Champions League final. Four days later, yeah.
And I mentioned to you. Keenan skulls are in the team,
(01:16:49):
yeah. Yeah.
Go on. Was.
Sharing him up front for that one he was.
On the bench, right? York was on the bench, yes.
With Bonquist was on the bench. Yep, Stan was on the bench.
I'll go talk about. David Mahe.
David Mahe was playing in that one, I said.
To you before we started recording though, didn't we?
That you? I didn't know and I'm sure you
(01:17:11):
said you didn't, but this was the first FA Cup final that
would not result in a replay if it was a draw.
Yeah, here you go, 1990. 9 But wow, I thought I'd have been
done before that. There we go.
Was that the? End of the glory Because this,
the next season, wasn't it Manchester United choosing to
not defend their title? They wanted to go and yeah,
(01:17:33):
yeah, we're tarnishing the cup. Yeah, weird, because I remember
watching them against Vasco da Gama in the Club World Cup.
They struggled, didn't they? They did that.
It wasn't easy, was it? OK, there we go.
Wow, got the song. Do you want to only one song?
See, this is where we're talkingabout.
(01:17:53):
So I haven't looked at 2000 because I didn't bother with
2000, but 99 Manchester United bought a song.
Newcastle didn't bring out a song.
Maybe they were just still railing from that previous.
I think that's bad. All right, this one.
There we go Manchester United 99I squad look at that lift it
high. All about belief came in 11
(01:18:14):
right? This is Oasis esque.
I think I will play it for you. Here we go.
What are you thinking? Yeah, is a bit, isn't it?
There we go, especially this part.
(01:18:35):
Oh yeah, and the the old tambourine.
Yeah, I'll get out of it. Yeah, Watch the.
You can watch the. I'll.
I'll share. I'll try and share some of the
songs during the week. The video for that one, they're
all serious, like black and white.
(01:18:57):
Not but very. I missed that.
Yeah. Andy Cole looking serious, but
going back there. So we talked about some of the
shirts. I've got some in here.
I was all. I don't know about you, but I
was always interested in the prematch jackets as well.
Beautiful. Yeah.
Good shout. Got someone here.
Like good shout. Here we go.
(01:19:20):
That Shepherd. Do you have that Shepherd
Wednesday one? No.
I don't. I don't.
It's beautiful in there, yeah. Yeah, I put the Liverpool One on
there because I was disappointedwith that 96.1 because that's
just a a bog standard at this track.
That Manchester United one for 96, the tartan print I liked,
yeah. And that was a good one, yeah.
(01:19:41):
But that Wednesday one, yeah, yeah.
I've never seen that go for. I was going to say, was that
ever? It was?
Yeah. Yeah, it.
Was yeah, yeah, still time. Yeah, if anyone's listening.
Anyone's listening and you've got that jacket.
Woody would love it. I just forgot about the pre
(01:20:01):
match jacket. Pre match jackets I think were
important as well and they just seemed to go away from that.
In the later years as well, theydid.
No, you're absolutely right mate.
A lot of traditions we've forgotten, I think, from that.
Yeah, all right. Got any listeners questions or?
Well, we've had some great feedback so I've got a few here
from your listeners, so I'm going to give you a mention.
(01:20:23):
So Rich Critsblow tells us of going to the 98 semi final for
Wolves against Arsenal, which hesaid felt like a home game.
Now if you watch the highlights,Wolves pretty much take over
Villa Park for this one. It's incredible.
Of course, yeah. Because obviously they had a
great run, didn't they, in 98 with old Don Goodman and against
(01:20:46):
Leeds. So he's he's basically put his
memory of this though was they started Steve Bull on the bench.
Rich loves. The bull as well, isn't he
exactly. So Jimmy also has mentioned he's
a Wolf fan. Here's highlights of the FA Cup
he can remember. One of them was Hans Sager's his
(01:21:07):
last minute penalty save. Ellen Rd to get to the semi
final because obviously it was quite a tense affair with Keith
Curl and Floyd Hasselbank and obviously Don Goodman scoring at
Leeds. But Hans Sager's saving the
penalty was incredible. Basil has basically said he
(01:21:28):
remembers how hot it was for thethe 98 cup final and remembers
watching the build up at his mate's house.
Now. I love that quote.
Because that is what the FA Cup is about isn't it?
It's like squeezing into a hot sweaty living room and watching
the FA Cup build up. Think.
Thinking back then, it seemed tobe a hot day, the only 194.
(01:21:49):
It was raining, wasn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But memories of that, it seems to be epic at finally it's nice
and hot outside. Yeah.
Just going to have a lovely day, yeah?
You've got Fletch who's wrote inas well and basically said about
the huge build up. Obviously that was his major
memory. Always sunny at Wembley, his
(01:22:11):
first kind of FA Cup memories, the Arsenal Wednesday game Russ
has mentioned about the Amicachiresurgence against Spurs.
Obviously we've briefly touched on that and the episode serving
himself on. But this last one from Tom
calling Mr Meadows chef or Wednesday fan?
I love this one because this just tells you how magic the FA
(01:22:33):
Cup is to a team that doesn't gothere every year.
So in 1993, him and his family attended a holiday campsite in
the middle of France. The mum and dad booked it but
completely forgot it fell on theFA Cup final weekend and
Eurocamp where they were stayinghad changed their refund policy
(01:22:56):
so they couldn't cancel their holiday, though obviously they
go to France. Sheffield Wednesday play Arsenal
in the FA Cup final obviously ended in a replay, so obviously
the family thought they could still make it.
However, they were still in Marseille that week when the FA
Cup final was replayed on the 20th of May, which meant they
(01:23:17):
still missed both matches and apparently his dad still
complaints about it to this day.But they both assumed.
But they both assumed that Sheffield Wednesday would make
the FA Cup final the following season.
So if it'll be all right, I'll be there again next year.
Don't. Worry about it.
Oh, brilliant. Wicked.
(01:23:38):
Yeah. Thanks, guys.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. All right, one.
Episode I think I. Need a holiday now?
Yeah, yeah, I'm going to take a.Tie off Jonesy blooming Eck.
I feel like I've I've done 120 minutes in the Wembley sun.
That's it. Yeah, great episode, that one.
I enjoyed that one. Yeah.
Thanks again mate, love all the music very.
(01:24:01):
Content heavy, yeah, I've got to, I've got to squeeze
everything in mate. That's it's the phone of the FA
Cup, I think. Listen.
Jonesy, if we're going to do it,we're doing it properly, mate,
aren't we? Yeah.
Absolutely. Yeah.
No half. Measures.
No, so I hope everyone enjoyed that one.
As I said before, giving us a A5star review, write some
(01:24:21):
comments, share the pod, every little bit helps, doesn't it it?
Does guys, we want your feedback.
We want to know how you're enjoying it.
And like Jonesy said, if you cangive us positive reviews on all
platforms, that would be amazingbecause it just, it just kind of
highlights the hard work that Jonesy puts into it and the
content and all the research that we do.
(01:24:43):
And we don't just put shirts andtie on for anyone, do we?
So we do a. Lot of work behind the scenes to
get us. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Excellent. We've Where can you follow the
pod? Where can they follow?

you haven't seen. So on Friday we put out a little
(01:25:28):
bonus pod, didn't we? We did.
Climbed it on. Yeah.
Yeah. So 5 has been well received.
Yep. Great episode as well.
Yeah. Another Wednesday, wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah. We had a lot of fun with that
one. So we're going to be doing
plenty more of them as well. So if you ever want to come on,
just let us know. Yeah.
Yeah. All, all, all teams are welcome
in the 90s. Anything else to say mate?
(01:25:49):

very, very soon. Thanks.
Bye, guys. Cheers guys.
(01:26:11):
They did the. Double last year, double blank
this year, I'm afraid. But that's football, that's
life, Jereo. The.
