(00:14):
Well, we are back. Jonesy episode 2 Little Ducks.
22 How you doing mate? Yeah, good, good.
Babe had a good week. Busy week, but yeah, it's always
good to talk 90s in the near theend of the week.
Premier League's back. Yeah.
(00:36):
How did you go with that? What did?
You watch? Did you actually watch anything?
Yeah, I did. I tried watching as much as I
could over the weekend and Matchof the Day, you know, I think
it's always the obligatory firstmatch of the Day, seeing what
the kind of theme tune is and seeing what the titles look
like, etcetera. Yeah, I was pretty disappointed
(00:59):
with the results. I think, you know, from the last
few seasons of the Premier League, there always seems to be
this kind of safe element where teams just don't go for anymore.
And also the fact that these massive games are being played
on day one, like Arsenal, Man United is normally like.
Yeah, Huge. Don't know.
(01:20):
Yeah, I mean, I watched. What did I watch?
See, I can't even remember. Aston Villa, Newcastle, because
it was the first time in a few years it was played on on free
to air TV over here. So it was pretty.
Yeah. What a boring game.
I switched it on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Wasn't yeah, I mean, yeah, it wasn't that exciting.
I think I tried to look for someBundesliga or championship game
(01:43):
or something. Yeah, yeah.
But you know. But there we go.
Yeah. I mean, so I mean, leading on
from that sour note, what we're talking about today on today's
episode, my friend. Last day of the season, no.
Which we're thinking, get a dance.
No, we're going back, aren't we?We're going back to our memories
(02:04):
from opening days. Do you know, like, yeah, it's,
it's a classic memory of mine. It's sat in a hot car listening
to the sort of grandstand, you know, music when it comes in at
the end and you hear the results.
So you're listening to Live Radios 5 live and you're
listening to, oh, there's been agoal at Carrow Road or there's
Hillsborough. Like I was just, that was always
(02:27):
that kind of thing. And then I was like, picturing
it in my mind as to what it all looked like and then waiting to
watch it on Match of the Day. There's like all the pitches
were bright with all the sun. The kits looked new and fresh.
That's what I loved as well, my memories.
Oh yeah. Obviously going to the shops,
looking outside Dixon's window. Yeah.
And you're like, just just looking for those results.
(02:50):
And then you go in the car on the way home and then you're
like, there's been a goal. And you're like, oh, yeah, yeah.
New kits. And yeah, as you said, you
brought up Match of the Day before as well.
Looking forward to that new intro.
Crisp. Yes.
Did did we ever work out who that guy was, by the way, that
did the results at like 445 on aSaturday?
(03:13):
Because we did. Did we imitate him last time?
You know the guy that did the old like?
I think you did, yeah. Crystal Palace 1 And I was kind
of thinking like, I want to knowwho that is.
Listeners, viewers, if you know who that guy is, I want to know
because he was the voice of my childhood, really.
We should know. He he's a national treasure.
(03:35):
I mean, yeah, it's the voice of our childhood.
The Vauxhall Conference, Altrincham 3.
Northridge, Vic 4. Dagenham and Redbridge, Nil
Woking. Yeah, now it's a good.
Me for not knowing if it's an obvious one.
But it was just, I think as I said, the excitement of new
kits, new season. Yeah, it's a it's a lot
(03:57):
different from 1. I don't know, called me old
fashioned but yeah, give me 90s opening days any day.
You had a build up though, didn't you?
Like the Football Focus was big.You sort of like saw all of the
transfers. You had interviews of the
managers. You watch the players turning up
with their wash bags under theirarm, walking down the tunnel.
(04:17):
Then you add like soccer AM and all of that sort of stuff that
started to come through. First game of the season,
opening day soccer AM Yeah. Yeah, So I think like as a kid
you were just like, not force fed, but like you were just sort
of given so much to watch. And now it's almost like, oh,
(04:38):
was there a game on? Was there?
Oh, 12:00 Oh, missed it. You know what I mean?
It's that kind of like the the Buzz isn't as as prolific.
I mean, yeah, I mean, obviously you've been there.
You've got you. You know, you can watch Match of
the Day, Sky Sports and you know, everything for me is
behind paywall. No build up, no nothing.
(05:00):
Just yeah, just an 11:00 kick off for me.
But how much PM? Oh God.
So how much of a kind of big deal was it to you though, in
terms of like the intros to TV programmes like Football Focus
or Grandstand Match of the Day? Were they big to you as a kid?
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah.
(05:21):
I think my favourite was still, was it 9495?
I have to go back, but yeah. Oh, I just sitting in front of
the TV getting ready. You know, for that, yeah.
You want to see your your new star signings, have you?
Like we'll get into it for the memories we've got, but yeah,
yeah, just getting excited. Right, so, so how is today going
(05:44):
to work mate? Give us a bit of an overview of
what the opening date. I think we've just, we've just
made a bit of a list, haven't we?
We're not going to go for every. We just picked a couple of games
out for each season just to talkabout memories.
Yeah, yeah, I've got a mention by the way, that for those of
you that are watching YouTube, if you're listening to Spotify,
Jones, he's editing again is second to none.
(06:06):
We now have the episode titled Pod of the Day, and if you will
notice, we have made a slight spin on the Match of the Day
font and the background. It looks classmate as always,
great job. Great job.
That's all good. Happy to do it.
Love it. All right, cool.
What have you got? Have you got a stat?
Any stats? I think I've got quite a few
(06:28):
stats that we know. I've got like a hundreds and
thousands worth of stats today. All right, let's play that intro
then. Does anyone love that of the
week? Do people walk around with
T-shirts on with start of the week yet?
I mean, that's still the dream. That's that's still at the
(06:49):
printers mate. They'll be released soon, don't
you worry. You were the binder.
Stocked in all BNM, Home Bargains and Clinton card shops
right start of the week. So if I were to say to you,
Jonesy Dion, Dublin, Ravenelli, Malatisie and Mickey Quinn, what
(07:10):
do they all have in common mate?Handsome men.
True moustaches, white hair on build.
There we go. Is this a?
Is this a hat trick? Yeah, So what I've noticed, and
it's incredible really, there have been Four Seasons that have
(07:35):
included hat tricks on the opening day of the season.
So we'll start with 9394 Mickey Quinn, hence my shirt choice
today. It's his hat trick at Highbury
against Arsenal. So scores three goals and the
34th, 62nd and 65th minute that's incredible from Mickey
(07:57):
Quinn. To win three, not Highbury as
well was incredible. The next one we have Matt
Letizier, however his hat trick came in a four three defeat to
Nottingham Forest. I was researching that one
today, actually, yeah. In seven goals in the opening
day of the season of the 95 and 96 season is pretty bloody
incredible. But it wasn't enough.
(08:17):
Matt Letizier didn't score 4, soI think probably the most famous
one that we know of would be Ravenelli against Liverpool in
the 9697 season with his hat trick.
I mean for you as a Liverpool fan, Jonesy with the ET Crew
cream kit that they wore, you must know.
(08:38):
I mean, I remember, yeah, I think that was one I was
following on Teletext. And we just kept popping up.
And then you, you know, you watch on Match of the Day and
you're like. Did you think it was a technical
error like Ravinelli Ravinelli Ravinelli Like bang in the
remote control? I always think that because it's
a like fresh season, new kits, they look so good.
(09:01):
Yeah, it's yeah, had that new. Season had that new season field
in it. I mean, obviously it was opening
day, but yeah, I don't know. But what is it about new kits on
day one though that looks so crisp and good?
And then if you wear it the second game or like by Christmas
you're like boring. But why is it that first day?
(09:21):
What makes it so special? Is it just because your eyes
have adjusted to a new shirt with your team or?
I guess so, yeah. Yeah, but far out.
I remember that game and I, yeah, I think I've mentioned it
on a previous episode where I thought, geez, Middle was
Middlesbrough of Force Ravinelli, like Janineo, you
like. Yeah, yeah, they were definitely
(09:43):
splashing the cash and yeah, yeah.
And I couldn't think he was got a, there was a rumour, yeah.
I don't know if it's true or not.
It's a rumour that Robson, when signing Ravinelli, showed him
around London instead of the northeast, claiming it was close
to the capital. Oh.
That's true. Yeah, I'd you know, that's risky
(10:07):
that here's Big Ben and we are now at Middlesbrough.
What did he do in a team knockout, Mr. T and like, yeah,
went to sleep. They're like, whoa, how did they
get here? How did we get here man?
The. Truth.
Yeah, Hi. Yeah.
You all right, pet? Welcome to Tyneside.
(10:29):
Whoa. Grab an alley, but you think
Ravinelli, what was it? 31 goals in all competitions and
like they got relegated. Well, let's, let's remind
ourselves. I mean, he was from Juventus.
He won the Champions League the year before and it's incredible.
Yeah, that's one of the teletextmemories, and you see it pop up
(10:50):
and you're like, Nah, that can'tbe right.
Someone's having a joke. Yeah, cool.
My, my final, my final hat trickof the the quartet is from
Holmes Under the Hammer day on Dublin.
Obviously his his trio came in A32 triumph against Chelsea and
(11:12):
I'm sure we're going to talk about that one.
But I just thought, do you know what?
We've witnessed a lot of nil Nils and a lot of 1 Nils and two
Nils or two ones. There's not that many highly
scoring games anymore in the sort of the opening game, let
alone the Premier League, so to kind of hail these hat trick
heroes I thought was worthy of including into the start of the
(11:34):
week. Yeah, excellent.
I really enjoyed that one. Thanks, James.
Go. No worries.
All right, Let's not forget. What are we wearing?
What are you wearing first? Right?
Come on. So I've gone back to 9495.
Little sprinkler nutmeg. Yeah, Nutmeg, Crystal Palace.
(11:55):
Not a good time for that. Yeah, lost six one though, in
the opening game. I remember that 94.
I was obviously being a Liverpool fan of 6/1.
We looked so good. Even Yan Moby scored in that
game. Is that the kick that you the
the white kit with the green andblack on it?
Still under the ribs, Yeah. Beautiful kit.
(12:15):
Yeah, being it was. Still, Steve Manaman was so good
in that game as well. I posted recently on my
Instagram, I don't know if you saw it, it was on one of the
pages, but they they showed the picture of because yesterday was
the on this day of the Crystal Palace Liverpool game.
And there's a picture of Nigel Martin, Ian Rush, Southgate
(12:38):
coming out of the tunnel. But what I noticed and what I
zoomed in on was the mitre ball that they were using, Black
Markipen had like DPFS, the homeball on it.
And they all had it like writtenon there.
And I thought like, that is amazing.
Like if that's going to go over the stand in the road and then
(13:00):
we're like, oh, that's Crystal Palace ball.
We've got to return it. Yeah, those falls weren't cheap.
Far out. Oh, that's good.
That's like a Sunday League kindof thing, isn't it?
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's brilliant. How raw?
I've saw that part now. It looks so good.
Yeah, yeah. Very raw, gritty.
Just yeah. I would quite like, actually,
(13:21):
like, now I think about it, I would love like, just photos of
all of the teams coming out of the tunnel in their kits.
Like, I think that kind of photography, like when you see
the players coming out at the kind of corner part of Selhurst
Park. But that was a great shot of
photo, wasn't it? And like a great way to
(13:42):
advertise the kit and the game. Yeah.
I think that would be awesome tocollect if you could find.
You've got a bit of space behindyou on the wall there, mate.
Chris Waddle walking out the tunnel.
Yeah, couple of pits of paint onshow, so maybe I could get busy.
Excellent. Yeah.
So what are you wearing? Let's go back to it.
Right. I'm wearing Coventry Cities 92
(14:04):
to 94 Jonesy I believe home shirt Ribeiro, what would you
say? What?
How did we describe the pattern on this kit?
Was it a bit kind of shattered glass?
Was it? Or I remember how what you
described the away kit as. Steak marbling.
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
(14:29):
I mean, a classic kit. Peugeot sponsor.
Lovely detailed badge. I like the badge on there.
Yeah, real kind of bold font, really smart.
But again, I've worn this for for many reasons that we will
mention later on, but a certain mighty Quinn.
(14:49):
Mighty. But yeah, that's what we wore,
mate. So let's let's get let's get
cracking. Let's get onto it.
OK, cool. I guess we just have a look at
start from the 9293. Yeah, let's start from.
The beginning we've got a bit ofso everyone, like I said,
everyone talks about Brian Dean, things like that, you know,
(15:11):
first day game of season. But as he talked, the Arsenal,
the Arsenal, Norwich, like that game, Jeez, I mean, we had
Gazon, didn't we? Yeah, time added on for Norwich
and he he, he spoke about that game as well.
It was just, it was nuts. What?
He was dribbling over Jeremy Goff.
(15:33):
We managed to get his favourite goals and bless him.
Hello Gaz. But yeah, we were.
We did mention this. Was this featured one of his
favourite goals as well, didn't it?
Mark Robbins. I think it did, yes, yes, as I
said, yes, I bowled. Yeah.
Arsenal will tune all up at halftime cruising and then it's just
(15:54):
yeah. Robin 6984, Fox 82, Phillips 73.
So jeez, I just what a comeback, especially at hybrid as well.
Yeah, incredible, incredible. Yeah, it's supposed to be
recognised enough mate, if I'm honest.
Nah, as I said, going with there's a bit of, you know, an
open day theme at Hybrid, isn't it for them getting thumped?
(16:16):
Yeah, whoops. But but yeah.
And going from that, I mean, yes, cracking goals in that one
as well. But as I've said, we can talk
about the Sheffield United, Manchester United.
I did have a programme somewhereof that one, but.
You could breeze past that one if you want.
I mean, I've got the the Man United shirt here from the
occasion. Yeah, look at that.
(16:41):
Brilliant, right? I mean, that was used against
Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, so I'm holding up the 92
to 93 Manchester United away shirt.
We have discussed this. I think I got a thumbs up,
didn't it on the. Yeah, I did review.
Yeah, I'm right at least though.I mean, it's an absolute belter.
But yeah, I think the I would probably say from the research
(17:04):
that I did this week for the POD, I would have said that the
Arsenal Norwich game was probably the biggest comeback of
all time in the 90s for the opening day.
More most impressive in my opinion.
There was a few cracking games on that one, was it?
I also said I think there I mentioned the Crystal Palace,
Blackburn, Shearer's debut. Southgate scored a hell of a
(17:27):
volley in that game. What's the Was that the same
season? Yeah, yeah, Shearer's 30 for
Blackburn. Yeah, 3 all, draw 3 all.
Draw. Wow.
OK, on the yeah, you think aboutit's not a bad opening day.
Not really. I mean, if you think about goals
scored on the opening day of theseason, there were 30.
(17:52):
It's pretty good, right? Yeah, and then you get to
Nottingham Forest, Liverpool forSuper Sunday, Manchester City,
QPR first Monday Night Football. It just like it gives me a
little bit of goosebumps just even thinking about it at the
moment, mate. I'm not being funny.
(18:12):
Yeah, I'm like a little bit kindof like when you mentioned Super
Sunday and then the Monday NightFootball and just the I can.
I can hear the music as you're telling me now.
And like all of the spectacle oflike the kind of the flames and
the cheerleaders and the sort ofbands at half time and it's just
(18:35):
it, it seemed such a massive occasion for the opening day,
didn't they? The build up, the hours and
hours and hours of build up, yeah, get new highs.
I mean, oh good. I mean, what's what's super sun?
I mean, I haven't watched it yet.
What's Super Sunday and Monday Night Football right now?
Is it just? In my opinion, very analytical.
Again, it's just like they're they're doing the sort of Gary
(18:58):
Neville, Jamie Carragher kind ofhave that massive green screen
where they sort of do formationsand chat and stuff and then they
chat to the manager and review other games, etcetera.
So from a kind of football nerd perspective, it's interesting
and it's very insightful, don't get me wrong.
But it just, I don't, there's something I can't describe how
(19:20):
it just it seems a whole different like lifetime away
from what that was in the 90s. I mean, Richard Keyes in a jazzy
blazer and a an awful tie and then just showing the sort of
ground behind them like what wasMonday Night Football, the first
(19:41):
game, Man City, QPR. Man City, QPR.
Yeah, like. A Tottenham, Nottingham Forest
on Super Sunday. Like would he be having his
roast dinner? Like, come on, I wouldn't want
to watch that. Mate, we've done a whole episode
of 9293 and we just can't get past it, can we?
It's difficult too though, mate.Isn't it like the whole thing
(20:04):
you've got, if you've got a favourite season or if you're a
big fan of the Premier League, that is like your kind of,
that's your Glastonbury, you know, it's your WrestleMania.
It's like a big event for peoplethat are like hobby sort of
collectors etcetera. Oh, shut up.
Over to you mate. It's all good mate, all right
(20:24):
and going to 9394, we just got the Arsenal Coventry wearing
there three nil, let's say Mickey Quinn.
Yeah, so we had this wrote in byPete Gambler UK, who is a
gooner. Obviously he was a season ticket
holder, travelled home and away with Arsenal.
(20:47):
He has prolific memories of Mickey Quinn scoring on the
34th, 62nd and 65th minute. Like that's a hell of a
performance. Yeah.
As I say, Arsenal, FA Cup, Coca-Cola Cup winners.
Yeah. As I said, you got much else for
that. There's not much else like 9394.
(21:08):
You got anything else for that? 129 goals on the opening day of
the season, so slightly less butstill quite impressive.
Let's have a look. What else?
What did your team do? Paul Beach, Wednesday.
Yeah, I've got the SO. That is, yeah.
Do you have that on your list mate?
I do, yeah. You know, that was the first
(21:31):
ever red card in Premier League history on the opening day of
the season. Carl Palmer.
Call Palmer, yeah. 12 minutes in, we're not even talking a
second yellow. That was a straight red.
But yeah, thanks for bringing that one up, mate.
Yeah. Ellen, you're welcome.
Aston Villa smash QPR 4/1 Newcastle promoted, Lost one nil
(21:54):
to Tottenham. There you go.
They have a flat start really wouldn't I suppose.
Yeah. You promote it.
Welcome to the Premier League. That's it and I think the Super
Sunday was Man United beat Norwich 2 nil.
Yes. So that was Giggs and Robson,
wasn't it? I think.
(22:15):
And Robson? Yeah, yeah, yeah, you go.
All right. That by the way, right, that
that is, I think that's where myfirst example of Sky Sports
looking at two big hitters of the Premier League the season
before, because obviously it waswhere did Norwich finish in the
(22:36):
end? Third, wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah. In 9293 for a long time.
Exactly. So I think that's their way of
going. Do you know what?
Let's get people subscribing to Sky Sports.
Let's get them watching the opening day of the season.
Let's see if we can put a fixture on Super Sunday.
And the first one of the season is first versus third the season
(22:58):
before. I mean, that's when they start
to manipulate the fixtures, you know what I mean?
Yeah. Didn't they read somebody just
say how they. I mean, is it all done by
computers now, isn't it? Is it?
Is it? Yeah, I don't.
Know I'm not so sure. Done by the TV networks.
But it always used to be like the Champions always played the
(23:19):
promoted team, really, didn't they?
Like, that was always my kind ofmemory.
It was always the first team that got promoted, played the
Champions and it was always like, oh, this is going to be a
bit of a walkover. So I'm looking back at that.
So back to it, right? So which one?
I was on there? So that Monday Night Football
was Tottenham, Tottenham, Arsenal.
(23:43):
The opening of the season. No, because they they played on
the Saturday. So Arsenal lost to Coventry,
Spurs beat. And then so they must have
missed the week then. Oh no, it was on the 16th, it
was played Saturday the 14th andthen the Monday Night Football,
the 16th, It was Tottenham against Arsenal.
(24:06):
What? Arsenal won one nil.
But did they put their youth team out against Coventry there?
Is that why they lost three nil?Right, Lady said.
I don't know. I'm sure someone will remember
that. Cool.
Blimey, what a Monday Night Football.
Yeah, Incredible. Incredible.
All right, so I've got my can add it 9495.
(24:28):
So you got the chef on Wednesday, Tottenham.
Just look at those badges a second before you throw me under
the bus with this Sheffield Wednesday Tottenham and you're
doing it twice now, Jamesy, 3 strikes, three strikes and I log
off. Just look at those badges on the
screen. Yeah, you know.
(24:49):
Is that your favourite Shepherd Wednesday badge?
Yeah, they got that one look. Amazing.
They they have. Yeah, they have for the third
shirt. Have you got that shirt yet or
hasn't arrived? Yeah, I have got it.
Yeah. It's on my my To Do List to to
show on the Instagram. But beautiful badge.
But yeah. Have you got a sponsor?
(25:10):
You're no, no. Excellent.
No, Mr. Vegas. No, yeah, thank God.
I don't have any sponsors on it.It's nice and plain, to be fair.
But yeah. So that that's the 20th of
August 1994, wasn't it, That onethat you've shown?
Yeah, it's definitely Wednesday.Separate on Wednesday 3
Tottenham Another Big Bang of three, Jeff.
(25:33):
Wednesday 3 Tottenham four. Yeah, and it was a debut for a
certain USA 94 style, wasn't it?Yeah, I mean, again, we've
mentioned him in the Foreign Legion about coming into the
Premier League and making an impact.
Also having a a reputation for simulation and diving.
(25:55):
So yeah, he shut the crowd up, didn't he?
I mean, he scored the winner effectively.
Yeah, what a game that was as well, far.
Out So that was Sheffield Wednesday's home blue and white
stripe, but the Tottenham were in that nice dark purple kit.
I was going to say, what was that one?
Purple, yeah. Yeah, purple, blue.
(26:18):
Let's see it. So anything else on that game?
So man, you know, a big QPR. I remember that game because was
it Clive Wilson got sent off? And Paul Parker.
Paul Parker Yeah, that's right. So McLaren Hughes in that one.
Yeah, so the 9495 season on the opening day there were 4 red
cards, so Clive Wilson and Paul Parker in the same game, Uvay
(26:42):
Rosler was a second yellow card for Man City at Arsenal and and
good old Pavel Sona. Check in a four nil win away at
Leicester got sent off in the 86th minute.
Oh, Jesus. What what goes through a
keeper's head to get set off in the 86th minute, though, Bored
(27:03):
Jack and he's got some really nice bath salts in his like
watch bag and he's like, oh, I'mgoing to get the bath first
before everyone else gets in. I got dips on the bath.
Oh, goodness. All right, yeah.
So as I said, 9495, probably oneof my favourite seasons.
I treasure the race for the title VHS.
(27:24):
Can I ask you why that's your favourite season?
Because I think I've asked you so many times.
I'm just really interested in itbecause I I would probably agree
I. Think it's the first full season
invested and it was just yeah, that title race as well.
Yeah. Yeah, memories of just, I mean,
I don't think I had Sky near theend of that season, Tough times
(27:45):
in the household, but I rememberjust sitting like memories.
I was sitting in my room with the radio and just it was
flicking on the radio between West Ham, Man United, Blackburn,
Liverpool, and it was just like, whoa, what is going on?
Like, you can't see it, you can hear it.
And I just sat there, ghost going.
What the hell? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's just, yeah. Just good memories.
(28:08):
The season that Man United were breakable, I suppose.
Yeah. Because they didn't win anything
that year, did they? FA Cup, No Premier League, No.
Who won the Coca-Cola Cup 9495? Liverpool.
Liverpool. Bolton.
Right. OK.
Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
Yeah, good season. I don't know.
Yeah, it's just one of those seasons.
(28:30):
What about you? Yeah, I would, I would say so.
I think like kit wise was was glorious.
I think the kits were incredible.
I started focusing on the World Cup 94, so obviously a lot of
players then started feeding through to the Premier League,
so your Petrescu, your Klinsmen and all that sort of stuff.
(28:50):
So yeah, I started noticing it abit more I suppose.
And I think what I would have been 7-6 or seven and I can
probably start recollecting kindof match of the Days and Chris
Waddle and all that sort of stuff.
So yeah, you're right mate. I think, I think it was just a
good season that like it seemed to be winners.
(29:11):
It seemed to be in school. I was in primary school then.
It's booming. Like everyone had the Merlin
sticker book, the black one. Yeah.
So it just seemed to be like football was just the in thing,
like everyone was into it. I think like we've had some
great feedback by the way from lots of people.
I mean, obviously Gaz and the custom Corinthians and stuff,
(29:34):
they've, they've sent messages recently saying that they're
being able to be a kid and relive all these moments from
what we talk about. And I think we owe a lot to
things like the Merlin sticker album because not only was it
something from a pastime hobby perspective, but it also kind of
(29:56):
put players in our minds. And then we were able to then
associate them on telly. And then while we were looking
on telly, we were going for our sticker album going, oh, that's
Dan Petreski. Oh, he was born in such and
such. Oh, his previous team was this.
Oh, he's Romanian. And you know, you were able to
like profile a player and then you kind of just got into games,
didn't you? And you were kind of writing the
(30:17):
scores down in Biro badly in theinside leave of it.
I think that's kind of how it you had, like you had something
physical to follow a game to. Yeah, it was Matt Shoot Magazine
running down the shop, like, yeah.
And you'd get into kits and thenit would just.
Yeah, excellent. Good memories.
(30:38):
There we go. All right, talking about
memories 9596, Any thoughts on Aston Villa?
Manchester United? Well, can't win any field with
kids, Jamesy. Jesus.
Do you reckon like his family? Buy him like a birthday card or
print a T-shirt with that on, doyou reckon?
Do you reckon the Hanson household plays on that?
(31:01):
He should have trademarked. Did he trademark?
Did anyone trademark that? I don't know, but I like, I kind
of get his point, though. It was a hell of a gamble from
Alex Ferguson, wasn't it? Yeah, yeah, I was saying because
they that summer they sold Kachowski's shoes intz.
And who did they start at? Aston Villa then?
(31:23):
Did they start both Nevels? I think so.
That's Beckham's goals, maybe. Yeah, Beckham.
Obviously Beckham scored a cracker the 84th minute, but
that's another one. Think like you remember where
you are. I was at the Albert Docks in
Liverpool that day on a day out.Can you remember?
(31:47):
What you were doing? Just walking around I think.
Oh, you're in Liverpool for the day out, Yeah.
Yeah, I think it's nice. And I think I've heard it on the
radio. I saw it on and I just couldn't
believe it. I think I heard it on the car
radio. Yeah.
And they're like, let's go to Villa Park.
Aston Villa 3 Manchester United won and you're like, what?
(32:10):
How the Backpage now so? Yeah.
It's huge, wasn't it? It was like, it almost felt like
a kind of a soap opera like storyline, didn't it?
Whenever Man United got beat, itwas like, whoa, gotta watch
Match of Day tonight. How did that happen?
Like did lightning strike the pitch?
Was there an earthquake? No, it was Dwight York.
(32:32):
It. Doesn't like, I think I shared
it on one of the episode as well.
The hate like or not the hate, the the press were on.
You know, Fergie needs to bye bye or bye bye.
Yeah, like he was. The pressure was on him.
Correct me if I'm wrong, James, I mean I'm struggling with my
eyesight here to see if you've got any form of football shirt
behind you. I mean it's blended in with all
(32:55):
of your kit. Is there a magnet away shirt
you've got there? I can't see.
I think it's just a, a naked mannequin, isn't it?
Oh, there it is. There we go.
There's the famous shirt. What do you think of that kit?
I like it. So do I just just because of, I
think. I think just because they did so
(33:19):
bad in it. I don't want.
I just, I think it's a smile. I like it.
It is. Actually it is.
I like it. They wore it out Villa, didn't
they? And then they wore, did they
wear it again at Southampton that season?
Is that the That's the famous game, isn't it?
Yeah, I did have the stats actually.
They didn't complain about it atAston Villa then.
(33:42):
No, I'm thinking about it. Let's see if I can find it.
I did have all the stats for that one.
Let's have a look. But going back to it, the team
that day, if I've got it from Manchester United, Schweichel,
it wasn't. You can't win anything with
kids, right? So they had Schmeichel and goal.
Paul Parker, Gary Neville, Pallister Irwin, Phil Neville.
(34:06):
Irwin centre back. No Irwin's on the wing, sorry
on. Left.
So what Neville sent about with Pallister then?
Yes, sorry. Yeah, sorry.
Yeah. So you had Parker on the wing.
There you go. Neville Pallister.
Pallister was captain for that day.
Irwin. Then you got Phil Neville on the
(34:26):
right wing, Nikki Butt, midfield, Roy Keane, Lee Sharp
on the left, skulls up front with Brian Mcclair.
Beckham was on the bench. And on the bench was John O
Kane, David Beckham, Simon Davis.
Wow, who did they have upfront that time?
Who would they? There was no anarchy was still
(34:48):
suspended. Yeah, and Andy Cole was injured.
Wow, let's. See, I did have the stats for.
That, that does sound like quitea weakened side, though.
I mean, skulls and the Claire upfront.
Wow. I mean, yeah, I think, I think
we could do a better job, Jamie.Jeez.
(35:10):
That's all right. Let me.
Here we go. Sorry.
Let's see. So he with the away kit.
So he lost three one to Aston Villa, lost one nil against
Arsenal, drew 11 with Nottingham, price lost, lost two
nil to Liverpool and then the three one.
(35:33):
So they only wore it. Oh, it's dropped first to the
games they dropped points in year they wore.
It in new. Times then yeah, they just
didn't kind of do do very well with it.
Fine. Well, I mean, So what was your
opinion then of Match of the Dayin those days?
Did you like the Lawrence and Hanson Lynam lineup?
(35:55):
Trevor Brooking wasn't it as well.
Trevor Brooking as well, yeah. I mean, I like the old, the old
guard. They just tell you what what
it's, you know, what's everything it's all about.
And you just like, oh, yeah, yeah.
OK. Because Linnica would make an
appearance from time to time when he has a guest, I suppose.
Yeah. Yeah.
But yeah, I think they were verykind of traditional, weren't
(36:16):
they, in terms of like their andthey were, I wouldn't say they
were outspoken, but they had an opinion, didn't they?
Yeah, absolutely. I think you took notice of
Hanson, didn't you? When he spoke, he listened, kind
of. Yeah.
Yeah. I always, I think the kind of
the key things for me were whenever I used to play Sunday
(36:37):
league football and stuff as a kid, you'd have your bacon
sandwich or you'd have whatever you were before you played early
morning. But you would have a recording
on VHS of Match of the Day and it would be BBC One and there'd
be that great big hot air balloon that'd come across the
screen and they'd be like, and now we joined design them for
(36:59):
Match of the Day. That's.
Why I'm in the studio Match of the Day?
There you go. So being a kid again, but the,
the sequence is always used to change, didn't they, in terms of
like the starting bit of match the day?
So you'd see like a spoon going into a teacup and like tea would
go on like a cafe table. And then you'd see loads of
(37:20):
people with like boots running up, up, up steps in a tunnel,
wouldn't you? And stuff like that.
Those are the things that like as a kid I used to notice all
the time. And I know I said it to you
about like France 98, about the EUR and stuff, but it was those
sequences I used to be fascinated by.
As soon as you hear this, the studs.
(37:40):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You'd hear the whistle and then
you do the crowd go in and stufflike that and then then the
trumpet of Match of the Day would start.
You'd be like. Did you, did you ever, I mean,
obviously it's still going now. Did you back then ever did you
give a shit what the match orderwas?
(38:02):
I I don't remember ever caring. No, I didn't.
But if I if I look at it right, there were some really bad
decisions and you'd and now I'm older and I watch them, I kind
of think, hang on a minute, you've just started match the
day with a nil, nil and we've got a four three, which is
literally right at the end for like 30 seconds.
(38:22):
Like it just doesn't make any sense.
No. Did you notice though?
And I've only noticed this because I've watched old match
of the days, early 90s. How long were the game coverage?
I noticed that recently. We put one on the other day to
watch. Yeah.
It was almost like they played 90 minutes for one game and I
was like, wow, like, yeah, it was too much.
(38:47):
Too much for young Woody? Yeah.
There we go. So where are we at?
So 9596 just got a touch on thisone because I remember this one
and I was just like, sorry to put Sheffield Wednesday,
Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Stan Collymore.
That's what I thought. He's going to be a player for
us. Do you know how many times we
played Liverpool in the opening day of the season in the 90s?
(39:09):
I think it was 3. We played, we played.
There was a bit of a yeah filledaway twice and then we had him
at home I think. Then the latter part, I think it
was 9798. You might have had him, but
we've had Liverpool 3 three times in the 90s.
You go. There's a pattern.
So so yeah, just remember the Stan Collymore goal and that I
(39:31):
was just, oh, what a cracker as well.
I thought we got a player on ourhands here.
Obviously it didn't work out forhim, but.
Yeah, yeah. There we go.
There was a one red card in the 9596 season, Jamesy, of the
opening day. Can you tell me who it was?
Have a guess. It's your boy, A Blackburn.
Tim Flowers. Yeah.
(39:51):
Tim Flowers. Yeah, the one red card on the
opening day of the season. I remember watching, Yeah, I
watched the season. Somehow the season review was on
TV the other week. So yeah, watched it.
I don't know why. I don't know why I'm watching
it, but there you go. I know we're watching Black,
then. Do you know if I get a
confession out of you before theend of the season, I'll be
bloody happy. I know for a fact.
(40:14):
So we need to start a campaign, listeners, by the way, we need
to do #jonesy's a Rover, all right?
And we'll just see how it goes. I mean, I admit I am a fan.
I was a fan of Roy of the Roversgrowing up, yeah.
Oh, Roy of the Rovers. We're going to do a big segue
here. If I start to talk about Roy,
(40:35):
the Rovers. Carry on, James.
He shut me up, 9697. Yeah, I'll just just touch him
back on as well. So it was a before we go 9596
first goals obviously Les Ferdinand, a three nil against
Coventry for Newcastle, his first goal.
What a signing he was as well. I loved Les Ferdinand.
I think everyone needs some timefor good old Les.
(40:58):
I think he was an incredible striker, not used enough for
England, but I just think he wasa model professional, like
incredible for both QR, Newcastle and Tottenham.
I just. Couldn't understand why they
sold him, but never mind. We'll have to ask Sir Les one
day. Why did they sell you?
Yeah, he was just strong, good in the air.
(41:20):
And Sheeran did well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brilliant. Yeah, cool.
All right. So I think we talked about
borough Liverpool. What about any memories on
Wimbledon versus Manchester United?
Yeah, I mean, greatest Premier League goal of all time, would
(41:40):
you say? It's up there, isn't it?
That's another one you heard on the radio and again, like.
Yeah, yeah, that was a huge talking point, wasn't it?
Like you said, you hear on the radio, it was massive.
That was like everyone was trying to do that in the
playground the next day. And everyone was trying to do
(42:01):
their Neil Sullivan half ass jump as well, Yeah.
I've always packed in the middlebut.
What have that? I mean that as I said, what did
he get after that? You know, he got a deal with
Adidas, he got a new Spice Girl girlfriend, he got called into
(42:21):
the England squad. Yeah, yeah.
The world noticed David Beckham at that time, didn't they?
I mean, everyone looked up and went, well, here we go.
Have you got a list of the otherscorers in that forgotten game?
No because again, I'm probably 1of thousands if not millions
that literally focused on that goal and went oh Man, United
(42:42):
won. I think it was Cantona Earn,
wasn't it? That's aesthetic.
There again those for me, I don't know like I've just got
this kind of like spider man 6thsense and all this vision of
things right, because it's just my experience of this Beckham
goal was different Yeah, to what's done people.
(43:05):
I noticed how he chopped and sliced the ball.
I noticed what his predators looked like when he hit it.
I noticed what the goal looked like at Selhurst Park, like that
real kind of close net with likethe blue bar at the back and how
Neil Sullivan almost fell into the crowd through the net when
(43:26):
he stumbled backwards, you know? What minute that goal was it?
Anyone guess? Have a guess.
And we'll go eighties, 90th minute.
No, it wasn't. It says on the Premier League
website. Let me just have a quick look.
Was that the winner? It was, yeah.
(43:47):
Oh my God. Let's just have a quick look at
that. Right, a little bit sick.
I feel like I'm reliving it again back home.
Let's have a look if that's right.
I always forget. That's incredible if it is. 90th
minute. Canton 25th.
Boo. Wow, you go that's I think a lot
(44:10):
of people forget about that. I mean cancel out 25th Irwin 58
and Beckham. That was an How have I not
realised that was the 90th minute?
Ferguson must have literally be boiling over like a Morphe
Richards kettle on the sideline. You can hear his ears whistling
when Beckham shoots as well. And then he he just stands and
(44:32):
just does that, don't he? And just does the nod and
everyone's like, Oh my God. He's like, I'm here, I'm here,
what else have we got? Sorry, we've got Everton to
Newcastle. Neil Shearer's first game for
the tune. Yeah.
So that was mentioned to us, wasn't it?
Russell mentioned that to us. Whatever I got about Shearer
(44:54):
there, they weren't there. A lot of pressure on.
It yeah, I've ever been watchingthe Charity Shield.
I think it was close to his first actual game as a Charity
Shield, wasn't it? Oh, of course it was.
Of course it was against. Man United, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think another that was. That was a vicious game, wasn't
it? I think it was.
(45:16):
Yeah. Do you remember?
I remember Premiership year showing it.
I remember watching it. Because they call it Karen
Razor, don't they? Karen Razor I can't even
remember the buddy score. What was the score you remember?
I think it was. Was it 3 nil or 4 nil?
It was a heavy defeat and Shearer was gutted.
I can remember. Because they were angry, weren't
(45:38):
they? He just over Jones's brain is
going. But let's have a lot, right?
I remember watching it on Sky Sports.
Yeah, yeah. 4 nil. So it was cantonal, but cantonal
But Beckham 2 Late goals, Beckham 86, Kane 88.
We'll bring that up on a future Charity Shield episode next.
(46:01):
Year, yeah, because it's still called the Charity Shield with
us, Jamesy and. Yeah, like Coca-Cola Cup.
Yeah, we're we're not part of a Community Shield anymore.
Like. We don't.
We don't bother with the. Community, get real.
Yeah. Yeah, another one I've got
written down here. Derby 3, Leeds 3.
Dean's Wow, storage. Cool.
What? Again?
That was about Dean Sturridge scored Derby's first ever
(46:24):
Premier League goal. Good striker.
Dean Sturridge, Yeah, I liked him.
Was that at the Baseball Ground or was that a Pride Park, that
one? They were still at the Baseball
Ground at that point, I think, weren't they not?
Baseball ground. Yeah, you're right.
Yeah, Baseball. Ground.
Great kit though that one. Because that was the Puma
sponsored kit, wasn't it? Yeah, have you got that one?
(46:48):
Yeah, I have it's it's beautiful.
What else you got? Sheffield Wednesday, BS21.
Yeah, Guy Whittenham. David Hurst, wasn't it?
Richie Humphreys, I remember Richard Humphreys.
We've got a, we've got a player on our hands here.
Yeah, it's big. Only 27 goals scored in the
opening day of that season. They were starting to decline.
(47:11):
What a Super Sunday that was. Southampton nil.
Chelsea nil. I think I'd have helped.
I think that'll help my mum makethe apple pie for that one.
Oh. Goodness.
And also, though, that would have been the only game of the
day in those days, but they wouldn't have had like, because
because now we're so lucky to have three games a day on a
(47:36):
Sunday or two games a day. So if one of them was crap, we'd
be like, oh God, right next one, please.
High scoring. If you waited for a Sunday for
Southampton, Chelsea and it was nil, nil, your Monday would have
been awful. This is going to be REIT.
Yeah. And I put my feet on March to
football. Oh, Neil.
Neil on the whistles. Done now would he?
(47:56):
Go and do your homework for Monday, damn it.
Oh goodness. All right, let's take along to
9798. I've got Everton 1, Crystal
Palace 2. Why is that one relevant, Woody?
Everton 1 Crystal Palace 29798 Yeah, on Crystal Palace, 2A
(48:19):
certain bold eagle. Oh God, the bald eagle.
Lombardi. Yeah, what a player he was as
well. Yeah, great player.
That was another one. I mean, we spoke about him as
well on the Foreign Legion. Foreign Legion, didn't we?
Yeah. Again, I never mentioned to us
(48:41):
when that the Lombardi, the Lombardi girl.
Yeah. Obviously that season though,
was the Dion Dublin hat trick against Chelsea.
Yeah, quite left it late as well. 87 and 88. 83rd and eight.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Incredible.
And only 23 goals scored that that that day.
(49:02):
You have memories of Newcastle to Sheffield Wednesday 1.
Yeah, do yeah. Yeah, yeah, let's want to move
on. All right.
Yeah, please do. We don't have a great opening
day, do we? I mean, I think out of all of
the results so far, you've only mentioned our two nil win
against Villa. We haven't had great start, damn
(49:23):
you remember. Damn you.
Yeah, Leeds. Leeds won Arsenal 1 Jimmy Floyd
Hasselbank His first goal. Yeah, what player he was as
well. Tottenham Real Manchester United
Tottenham nil Manchester United 2 Showing him missed a penalty
because he was playing against his old team.
Remember that. Yep, I remember.
Yeah, yeah, there you go. It felt a bit weird back back in
(49:45):
the day when jeez, they left thelight in the 82nd minute, third
minute when players used to go back.
Yeah, Fergie time, though, it was his tapping of the watch.
It was if you if you look at a lot of Man United goals though,
they were all from like the 80thminute on.
Yeah. But that's what made them so
(50:06):
damn annoying yet so damn good. Because even on the opening day
of the season, like if they lostthen you'd be like, oh, someone
else is in the chance of winningthe title?
Well, it makes no difference. That's it.
No. So moving on to talking about
that, you know, 9899 Manchester United to Leicester City to what
(50:31):
happened there? You know, they come to two nil
down. Yeah.
So Yep. So, you know, to come from 2 nil
down, Sharon Graham 79th and what happened in a 90th minute
used to piss me off because you're you're watching final
score and you're just like hoping and you're like, Oh yeah,
this is going to be right. Yeah, United.
Jeez. Yeah.
Losing 21 at home to Leicester City.
(50:54):
Oh yeah. And then suddenly flashes up
Beckham and you're like, ah, well, here we go.
Literally said something else then.
No, I know. Well saved, yeah.
We looked at that goal, didn't we before?
I mean, the Beckham free kick, yeah.
And that was kind of, you know, he was just coming back from
World Cup 98. All that hatred of the sending
(51:17):
off. Yeah, there you go.
He comes out. To be fair to Man United fans
there, they took him in like a kind of father, son kind of
bond, didn't they, as fans. So I don't think he had much
trouble at Old Trafford, but that was a real kind of middle
finger up to the media and 21 that sort of sent him hate that
(51:38):
he was still playing, he was still caring about the games,
you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.
Great goal. Yeah, absolutely.
Another one I've just got Newcastle, Neil Charlton, Neil
Charlotte, newly promoted and they we're down to 10 men as
well. Yeah, Richard Rufus.
Yeah, I've got him down there. My God, what else?
(52:01):
Happened on that. Did anything else exciting
happened on that day because, oh, Wimbledon beat Tottenham 31?
I won't mention your team. No, please don't go on tell.
Tell the listeners. He lost home to West Ham one
nil. Ian Wright, wasn't it?
(52:22):
Ian Wright, 84th minute, pretty lacklustre first, first day
wasn't going on. Is it a lot of?
I mean nil nil draws we got 1/2.344 Yeah, I mean, I've got it
here. So goals scored on the 9899
opening day. 18 That was the lowest of the 90s. 4 results nil
Nils though, Blackburn versus Derby, Everton versus Villa,
(52:45):
Borough versus Leeds and then Rufus I.
Remember the games? Off at Newcastle.
I remember the the Super Sunday, the I think it was Liverpool,
yeah, beat Southampton 21. Carl Heinz.
I love Carl Heinz. I was so happy when we signed
him. Cal Heinz Reedler.
Yeah. I just, I didn't really, I, I
(53:06):
mean, from what, from world football perspective, I know he
had a lot of clout, but did he have that much of an impact in
English football? No, I didn't.
I just remember been hyped up. I used to read World Soccer
magazine of like oh Bundesliga and just remember him for
Dortmund. Yes, happy when we signed him
and Michael I went scored in that game as well.
(53:28):
That was it. There's nothing much.
What else happened on the Arsenal beat not in Forest?
Was that on the Monday night? Monday night.
Yeah, yeah. Cool.
How was that right? So the previous week Charlton
newly promoted, beats Southampton 5 nil.
That's what I mean there. That's like, so that was the off
the back of the Clive Mendonca playoff win, wasn't it?
(53:50):
Against Sunderland was it? OK, Mandonka hat trick as well.
Yeah, Yeah. So.
New to the sort of Premier League and there is this myth,
isn't there? Of like when a team gets
promoted, you look at them sometimes and you go, oh,
they've not spent big or they'venot brought in a lot of players,
(54:11):
they're going to struggle. And yet some of them just hit
the ground running, don't they? And like, Alan Kerbishly was
obviously a child and at that point, wasn't he?
They kept quite a few players. I mean, they had like a young
Lee Bowyer, didn't they? For that season, we should have
done there. The second day of the season
looks more exciting. Sheffield Wednesday beat
(54:32):
Tottenham three nil away. Manchester United drew nil, nil
away to West Ham. Liverpool drew nil, nil Arsenal.
Jeez, yeah. All right.
Is that was that the season because Rich, the Leeds fan told
us about Michael Bridges didn't he was out of the Dell?
Was that that season 9899? Could be.
(54:54):
Because that was Michael. That was Michael Bridges first.
A second start for Leeds and hisfirst professional goal for
Leeds, but he scored a hat trickat.
The Dell have to go to go digging for that one.
I think that was the 9899 season.
There you go, Michael Bridges. But I know we're not going to
(55:17):
touch on 99 two thousand. Well, what was that?
Sheffield Wednesday 1, Liverpooltwo.
You're right. Jeez.
I told you honestly, it must be a Liverpool fan that does the
fixtures. Just give us an early win.
It was a chef on Wednesday. I did look at my red cards for
that season though. Shearer got sent off on the
opening day, didn't they? 99, two thousand.
(55:39):
They lost again. Let's have a look.
And Dean Blackwell got sent off for Wimbledon.
He's Chelsea smashed Sunderland 4 nil.
He's got an out on. We talked about that one tour
entry, Flow, Poyet Zola. Yeah.
I like that Chelsea kid that ordered Glass One.
Beautiful, Yeah. I remember listening to Under
(56:02):
the Cost though, and it was Chris Lumsden and he played for
Sunderland in that game at Stamford Bridge.
And it always made me like realise how physically demand in
the Premier League One already was, but how it was becoming
even more so as we were approaching Y2K.
(56:22):
Because like he said that he came off after like I think it
was even before half time because he was just completely
blowing. He said.
Because it was such a different standard of playing in the sort
of Championship Division One theseason before and then being
sent amid at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.
(56:43):
Like, can you just imagine that opening day of the season?
You think you've cruised like winning the League of the
Championship or Division One, and you've then got like Didier
Dechamp in midfield or Dennis Wise and you're like, what on
earth am I doing here? Jesus Starstruck.
Because I wonder why it feels like from a player's perspective
(57:03):
on opening day. We'll have to get one-on-one
day, won't we? That's what I mean.
Do they do they treated us as another game of football or is
it crucial for them to get off to a winning start like.
Does it feel like, does it feel like the first day of school?
Remember the first day of schooland you're like, whoa, they've
all. Got like new bags New.
(57:24):
New wash bag. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's
incredible. But have you got any other
memories of Opening Day other than results?
I think as we spoke earlier, I think it was just a new Match of
the Day intro's. You always came to see what's
going on and yeah, yeah, new kits.
Yeah, we always had the we. Would always see the kids in the
(57:47):
shooter match, wouldn't we? And then to actually seen the
first day in it, Not like now where they were at the buddy
last day of the season, Yeah, but yeah.
Yeah, I mean even the kind of the jokes and stuff in the
playground at school, if your team didn't win the opening game
of the season and your mate fromlike Blackburn or Aston Villa
(58:10):
came again top of the league like game one.
Yeah, I think going back to the 9596, I don't remember laughing
Man United that they were bottomof the league after that Villa
loss and you're just on teletextgoing.
Yeah, but it was a big deal and that's why I kind of, I tried to
allude to that at the beginning of the pod.
(58:32):
Is that like those results, likeMan United losing last weekend
against Arsenal? It just kind of it didn't have
that same gravitas that it wouldhave had in the 90s if you beat
Man United at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season,
(58:53):
like you were worthy of an open bus tour when you got home.
Yeah, you know, you're right. It just doesn't feel like that
now. It's kind of like you go to Old
Trafford and you get 3 points. Like you've got bit, you've got
teams such as, and this is no disrespect, but teams like the
Sunderlands and stuff like that, they probably go there this
season thinking, you know, I canget three points at Old
(59:14):
Trafford. Yeah, to give it a go, yeah.
Yeah, yeah. So it is different, but it's.
But yeah, but thinking back to new season, I mean, talking
about magazines, did you ever get the league ladders?
Were you a league ladder? Remember the?
Yeah. How come?
How committed were you? How many?
How many weeks into the season did you get?
(59:35):
Very so I used to I don't know if I went through all the season
mate, because it got like where I started, like having to do
like Dunfermline and not county.I was oh God.
But I just want to focus on cheffor Wednesday.
So and also my kind of eagernessto go on the league ladders.
(59:57):
My fingers always used to RIP every time I put the kit in.
It was so annoying when you put the kit in, you like RIP the
holder. So like you'd have like
Southampton would be hanging andyou'd be like, well, I don't
need this anymore because it wasblue on my bedroom wall.
Yeah, did you ever put Shepherd Wednesday top and look back and
go? Yes, I used to do though.
(01:00:23):
Pop Man United in the First Division.
Yeah, oh, Man United are playingin the second tier at Scottish
football. Wow.
I used to have, I used to do my own version of that.
So you know, I told you about mymy bingo for the Sabutio games,
right? So I used to have my own
notebook and I used to do my ownopening day fixtures, similar
(01:00:48):
format. So I used to draw them and I
used to do a stats page. So I draw my own little kit,
which would be the little kit that you would get in the Match
magazine. Yeah, ball chart.
I did my own versions of those and I used to draw them there
and I used to write their whole fixtures out, so it would be
Arsenal's whole fixtures and then I would do my own tally on
(01:01:10):
my notebook. I just, I think I, yeah, I love
that. Kind of like, yeah, I just, it
was so interesting. And those things like the
because you had to wait, didn't you?
With Match magazine, Didn't you have to wait one week to get the
next half of the league table? Or my imagine.
(01:01:32):
Yeah, think it used to come in sets, didn't it?
Because expecting kids in those days to like, carefully peel off
like the kits, because they camein that little, almost like an
advent calendar format, didn't they, Where you had to poke the
kit through. And Match and she had what?
Sometimes they had their own, their own version.
You're like, oh, mix them up. Yeah.
(01:01:55):
But did they also? Did they also come with
stickers? What do you have there?
Well so we mentioned a couple ofweeks ago a chap called Matt
that sent us an e-mail to the pod.
And firstly, he was incredibly complimentary of the pod and how
(01:02:15):
much he loved listening to it and how much it took him back to
being a kid. And part of the e-mail mentioned
about his nan given him 10 LB one year of his birthday.
Or was it a treat? And he sprinted to Woolworths to
spend that £10 on Premier Leaguestickers.
The most, the most hilarious part of his e-mail that he wrote
(01:02:37):
to us was saying that he has themost, the closest thing to
excitement of opening a pack of stickers now at his age is
opening a Lemsip sachet. I can completely relate to that
now, to be honest, because yeah, the the tear of a sticker album
packet is incredible. And he has very kindly sent us.
(01:03:00):
So this is the part of Kevin Happiness.
Away. I love it.
That's brilliant. So he sent us a sticker pack
that we're going to open live onthe pod today.
Who's who's on the car? Who's on the?
So this is 97980. Is that so?
You've got Stan Collymore and. Is that Sutton?
(01:03:24):
Oh, nice, Warhurst. Warhurst yeah, look at that.
Wow's a Rooney. I don't actually remember
Collymore playing in that kit. Did he play in that kit?
The Liverpool. Oh, it looks odd, doesn't it?
Yeah, I think he did. Was that pre season though?
That one? Because yeah, there's no Premier
(01:03:46):
League badge on there. Jonesy Warhurst has got 1
Jonesy. Look at that Rovers kit.
If you've already strikes again.Don't worry about Liverpool and
look at that Rovers 1. Yeah.
And just the feel. So this isn't going to come an
ASMR episode where I start doingthe old sort of things, but the
(01:04:07):
feel of it, the size of it, like, that's a big head.
But yeah, yeah, this. I mean, that's nostalgic in
itself like this. I'd be too scared to open it.
I would like that's just that sort of tear gently get some
(01:04:28):
scissors, cut the top so and then we.
Are going to open these? Yeah, don't.
All right, I'm going to. I'm going to play a game with
you now, Jonesy all. Right.
I've just opened the pack. All right, this one, it's that
one, isn't it, 97? That's it mate, that's it.
What have we got? Let us pick out some of.
(01:04:48):
OK. Let's see what once Jones is
missing. All right.
Oh. OK, OK, so we've got this is a
player card. I'm going to give you 3 guesses.
(01:05:10):
Jeez, out of how many players? No.
So I'm going to give you I'm, I'm going to give you some
clues. OK.
I don't know you're going to outof 400 players.
Yeah. So he played for Leicester.
He was American and he was a goalkeeper.
(01:05:34):
Oh, Casey Keller. Casey Keller.
Oh, look at that. Look at that kit as well.
Look. At that hair as well.
Look at that hair. Yeah.
I had hair like that, geez. It's like Niles Crane from
Fraser. That's actually, yeah, you're
right. Right, right, this next one.
(01:06:00):
Oh, he's he's quite prolific on Instagram actually with you
Jonesy. He did play for Man City.
He's playing for Chelsea here and he was defender.
Terry. Terry, Terry feeling.
There we go. Great picture.
Oh, what a feeling. Terry feelings on the ceiling
(01:06:24):
that that kit, though, was the one that we said wasn't great,
right? Oh.
Shit. Oh yeah, yeah, we didn't write
it, did we? Yeah, so right.
I now have 4 stickers left and two of them are from the same
team each. OK, so right this one, Oh,
Maddie, you read in the back of these is that?
Like, I can't. I haven't got my glasses on.
(01:06:47):
All right, let's have a look. Can you see?
I can't see. Right, I'm just going to say
I've actually got the clue on the back here so fast.
Central defender who made his name at Forest, took time to
recover from a bad year at Sampdoria and has yet to recover
his England. Oh, damn it, England place.
(01:07:09):
Uncle Dez. Uncle Dez Super Dez.
Look at that moustache. Yeah, I mean, that's quite a
worried expression there from DES, innit?
It is. He's not sure what's going on.
Hurry up, take the photo, right?I mean already Matt, you've
given me the greatest gift of all time with a Des Walker
sticker, so that's incredible, right?
(01:07:32):
Next one tough tackling, Classy central defender began his
career as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday before
moving to Leeds and then Norwich, costing 1.6 million to
bring him back to Hillsborough in 1996.
It's not John Newsom, is it? Jonesy, you are good.
(01:07:52):
Hey, John Newsom, there you go. There.
You go, oh, look at that. Next one, I don't think you're
going to get this one, but if you do, like take a Boo.
Highly experienced, lightning quick Romanian forward followed
five years with Dynamo Bucharestwith spells at Bari, Verona,
(01:08:15):
Brescia, Milan and then Espanol in Spain.
I'll give you a clue. You played for West Ham.
Is it for a Reddit show or is it?
OK, right. You've got a screen up, haven't
you? Or something?
This is rigged. Is it?
Look at that hairstyle. What is this?
When I play, Jonesy's Price is right, right?
(01:08:38):
I'm nowhere near and you've got literally all of them now, damn
it, right? Final sticker finals Decker.
Ian Rush leads. Right Northern Irish
international fullback with a sweet left foot.
(01:08:58):
Great crosser of the ball who May, who is making a strong
claim for first team at the leftside of defence.
Also played for West Ham. Oh, I don't think I'm going to
get this one. Northern Irish.
Not Steve Lomas, is it? No.
No. Here we go.
(01:09:20):
Oh, Kelly Rowland. Kelly Rowland.
That's a 90s name, isn't it? I mean, his neck and his, I
mean, look how big that collar is in that kit.
It's like they've superimposed his head on the body.
Wow, looks like one of those. Do you know when you used to hit
the things with the hammer when they used to come out the holes?
(01:09:42):
He. Had the wacka weasels.
It's OK. Oh, just look at that though.
Yeah, there you go. Brilliant.
Matt, absolutely brilliant mate.Thank you so much.
Matt, we enjoyed that. I wonder if we can claim our
free soft drink at McDonald's onthe back.
I mean I'll give it a go. Do it.
(01:10:03):
Try it in the UK only Jonesy. So sorry mate.
So actually if you go there likethat, that would be so confused.
Yeah, I would like a soft drink from 1996, please.
Yeah, let's. Pour out some syrup.
Be off, be off work for a while. There we go.
There you go. We had fun with that one, didn't
(01:10:23):
we? Yeah.
So guys, if you want to see U.S.Open more memorabilia, please
let us know because that's a great, great part of it as well.
And you know what is even better?
That there's facts, there's trivia on the back.
So it makes it even harder for Jonesy, although you were very
good at that, mate. Well done.
Thanks. Thank you.
So, all right, what's next? We've reached the end of our
(01:10:44):

reveal show was the the comparison episode, yeah.
That was the highest rated episode of all time.

the moment, haven't we? We do.
