Alice, do you wanna tellus what happened last time?
Yeah, so last week on 9-1-1, the118 rescued commuters stuck in a
bus, suspended in a high-rise andAthena return to work right in
time to get caught in a landslide.

(02:08):
Uh, in this episode we are goingto discuss the second episode of
season four, which is kind of thepart two of last week's episode,
uh, because it is the continuation.
Last week we had the HollywoodReservoir Dam break, which caused
the bus to go through the buildingand also caused the landslide.

(02:31):
Well, actually then the microquakes caused the dam to break, and
the micro quakes also caused thelandslide, but it's all connected.
Um.
So the summary for the episode,which first aired in January 25th,
2021, says, in the aftermath ofthe dam break, massive mudslides

(02:54):
wreak havoc throughout Los Angeles.
Even the summary says that they'reconnected as Athena fights to save
herself and an agoraphobic woman afterher house collapses, Bobby, Hen and
Eddie rush to save hikers endangeredby the falling of the Hollywood sign.
Meanwhile, Buck and Chimney mustrescue a group of pregnant women
trapped in a submerged house

Out of context that sounds so strange.
Which one?
In context it's so strange.
The pregnant women trappedin the submerged house?
Yeah, yeah.
Makes it sound like it'ssubmerged under water.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Rather than that, it just gotcompletely covered over by mud.
But trigger warnings for this episodeinclude claustrophobia, specifically

the threat of being buried alive.
Um, childbirth in the field, flashbacks toassault, depictions of grief, references
to kidnapping, a natural disaster, themicro quakes causing the mudslide and the
landslide causing multiple fatalities,men sinking in quicksand slash mud.

Um, mental illness, including orspecifically agoraphobia and depression
and pregnant women and babies at threat.
I think the pregnant women and babiesat threat are meant to be combined.
Not just that pregnant women is atrigger, although that could also be a
trigger in and of itself for some people.

I'm triggered by pregnant women.
Pregnant women are triggered bythemselves a lot of the time I think
my brother, when my brother wasyounger, um, like when he was doing his
internship, he worked with someone who waspregnant for the first time in his life.
Mm-hmm.
And he was so terrified that he'slike, oh, like what if I make
her mad on a day that the baby'slike growing ears or something?

And I'm like, I don'tthink that's how it works.
Like, I don't think stressing herone day is going to break the baby.
Oh, that's so cute though.
Oh look, he's fine now.
He is almost 30 and like has friendsthat have kids, but like, when
he was like 17, he was like, ohmy God, I'm gonna break the baby.
Like, it's okay.

Uh, so we start with some newsfootage of the floods through
the Hollywood Hills and the newsanchors explains what's happening.
So just in case we hadn't justwatched the previous episode.
Lots of water rushing down.
It's, it's interesting watching aseries that was intended to be aired and

watched weekly as a, as a, in one sessionbingeable series, because they do do the,
oh, we have to remind the, the audiencewhat happened in the last episode.
Like, Hmm, you really don't, weliterally just watched the last episode.
And it's, it's also like, oh, wehave to te like show people who may
have missed last week's what went on.

Yeah.
I mean, in nowadays it's not thatso much because it's easy to, to
catch up or a lot easier to catch up.
Um,
yeah, like these days inAmerica, it's on Hulu.
Hulu the next day orthat night or something.
Yeah.
So
yeah, like 20, 25 years ago there wasno way to watch the previous episode.

Which is why like you watch, ohmy god, Friends is the worst.
I know that it was necessary at thetime, but when they do their clip shows.

But then you remember that back in theearly thousands and nineties, like they

couldn't just go and watch highlights.
So they made an episode of highlights.

Supernatural is terrible for it as well.

Like shows like basically every scenethat happened in the last episode.

Before you get to the new stuff.
But anyway, yes, we are gettingan explanation of what happened.
So at the moment they don't know how highthe death count is, um, but the emergency

workers are searching for people and
spread very thin.
You know, the, the Hollywood Hills areais extremely dangerous and unstable.
This is before the quake hasstarted, because the Hollywood
sign is still in place.
Um, although we're not gettingthe two hours before the dam burst
in this episode, we are, however,getting once again slightly on

the nose, um, musical cues because
slightly on the nose?
Um, we're gonna get, uh, an excellentsong by Carole King called "I
Feel the Earth Move" in an episodewhich involves micro quakes.
Um, I mean, it, it's not up there.
I think we're gonna have to make a listat some point, at some point in the
series and let's talk about like the, thetop five what is the most inappropriate

musical cue this show has used.
And I think that one might be
Inappropriate or brilliant?
Yeah, I think this episodehad two of them too.
I might be wrong, but I feel likeit had two terrible needle drops.

So we are up on Mount Lee where theHollywood sign is still in place.
Um, and we have a group of young peoplegoing on a hike, uh, which is not
advisable because we do get a lingeringshot on a "no access to the Hollywood
sign" sign that they're walking towards.

And two of them arenot having a good time.
So the, these two guys are twins.
Um, and I'm looking atgoing, are they twins?
And actually are twins.
Are they twins?
It's just like they're, theylook so similar except different.
I just thought they were friends.
They're twins.
No, they're twins.
Yeah.
Seriously?
Like the actors are twins.
Yeah.

What?
And they played roommates?
No, they're, aren't theybrothers who live together?
They live together, but Iassumed they were roommates.
Housemates, yeah.
Well, when I found out that theywere actually brothers, I just
headcanoned in that they were,

I did pick up on that, the factthat there are three people in this
storyline, and yet we only have twonames, because once again, nobody
thought to name the female character.

And it pissed me off because theymanaged to drop in Caleb's name and
they managed to drop in Dylan's name.
They could very easily havedropped in the girlfriend's name.
Did not bother to do it.
Huh.
So, unfortunately, for our listeners,she is just gonna be girlfriend
because according to my rule that,you know, I imposed myself, um, I,

I can't name a character unless theyget named somehow in the episode.
Yeah.
Okay.

Looks like they're not twins.
It just says sibling.
Caleb is the one who is.
So going out with the girl, obviously.
Yes.
And he is like, has convinced theothers to come on this hike with him

and the others are not into it at all.
No.
And his girlfriend is like, "I'mnot dressed to scale anything.
I thought we were just going for awalk." And he's like, "Come on, it's
not that steep." And they're having abit of an argument about how the, he
always springs stuff on her and, andnever, you know, consults with her first
to which Dylan is in the background.

Just nodding in agreeance.
And then we get into a bit of an argybargey and we realize that things
might not all be sunshine and rosesbetween the friend group because, um,
apparently not only does Caleb liketo spring things on his girlfriend,
he likes to spring things on Dylantoo, including moving said girlfriend

(11:28):
in with them during the pandemicwithout consulting with Dylan first
and the girl girlfriend, ohGod, I can't call her that.
I don't even know what her name is.
But girlfriend,
Because she doesn't have a name.
That's the point.
We, she doesn't have a name.
It's girlfriend.
We can, we can give her a name.
What's the actress's name?
Does anyone have the wiki still open?
Um, yeah, I've got the Wiki still open.

I think it's Katie.
Katie?
No, that, that's Katie is the nameof the girl of the actual character,
which pisses me off.
Which means Katie
Her name is Jaylen,
which means that somewhere in a scriptthey cast her and said "We have named
her Katie." They just did not think toimpart that information to the audience.
What the fuck?
Please tell me that a man wrote thisotherwise I'm gonna get very angry.

No, Lindsay, what the hell?
Oh no.
I was totally gonna be on board withlike misogyny if this was a man, like
typical male writer, forgetting to namethe female characters, but Lindsay.
Um, all right, well I guess we can.
So I guess you can, youguys can call her Katie.

(12:34):
Apparently that was her name.
Even though Lindsay forgot toput it in the fucking script
for someone to say the name.
Well, Katie is, um, a, a hurt by this.
She thought that Dylan liked havingher around, that she called them.
She said no, "You said we werethe Quaranteam," which is so cute.

(12:59):
Yeah,
while they've been arguing, they'vefinally made it up to the Hollywood sign
and they've, Dylan notices that thereare a lot of helicopters flying around.
And we do, we get a shot.
There is a LAPD helicopter and several,they're either fire or search and rescue.
I'm not entirely sure, but there area lot of helicopters concentrated

(13:21):
in this region, um, which Calebjust brushes off and says, "it's
LA, there's always helicopters."
I mean, yes, but probably not thismany around a dam, but you know,
not this many in this specific area.
Uh, so they decide that they'regoing to take their selfies to prove
that they were up at Hollywood sign,and just as they do, the ground

(13:42):
starts rumbling underneath them.
What's that?
They feel the earth move.
They feel the earth move under their,
under their feet?
Yeah.
Oh my God.
It's not the sky tumbling down
No, we've had that episode already.
It's, it's the H
Yes.
The, the H and the O's start tumbling downand, um, they hightail it out of there.

(14:08):
It was very interesting the waythat they shot, the way that
the letters were falling down.
It remember, God, I don't even wanna puta like year reference on this, but do you
remember when they, Hollywood went throughthis phase of all movies were made in 3D.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Uh, the way that they filmed the Hcoming down reminded me of like, horror

movies that were shot in 3D the way
it was like coming right out the camera?
The, like, it was designed that wewere meant to be sitting there with
like, the 3D projector or something.
So it was gonna come outof the screen towards us.
Okay.
I don't wanna make you feel old,but that was like around 2009.
Yeah,
I was gonna say early two thousands.
Yeah.

It's very specifically like FinalDestination four or something.
That's literally what I googled,was Final Destination 3D,
I was like, oh, what's the name ofthat movie I saw that was really Yep.
Final Destination.

It's the one where it's a race trackand like the, the cars are flinging

off the track into the stadium.
Yeah.
And the other one, um, and where the girlgets like suction cupped or the guy gets
suction cupped to the bottom of the pool.
Oh, and then it like explodesout towards the screen.

Yeah.
Oh, okay.
Well, the first, the first movie Iwent to see in 3D was How To Train Your
Dragon, and it was amazing and I loved it.

And it's my favorite.
That's so, so much more G ratedand Bex and I are just like, yeah.
Remember when we hadblood sprayed on our face?
Okay, so this, I mean,obviously it's television.
It was not designed for 3D.
That's just what it reminded me of.
Um, How To Train Your Dragonwas also 2010, so yeah.

(15:57):
Around the same era.
Oh,
yep.
But that was like two years ago, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
At least.
Like it's gotta be two years ago.
Five at most.
Unfortunately, 2020 was five years ago.
So
What's, what's interesting about oncewe've seen the Hollywood sign, like come

(16:19):
flying at us through the screen as ifit's trying decapitate us, is that we also
get a shot of, as a segue to continue thestory of Sylvia's house from the back.
So the last episode, we saw itfrom street level and, and we
watched it disappear from the curb.
This time we get to see the back of it,and no wonder the fucking thing collapsed.

(16:41):
It's built on stilts onthe side of the cliff.
Yeah.
It's one of those like fancy houses thatis juttered right out from the cliff.
Yeah.
Like as it was collapsing atthe end of the last episode, I'm
pretty sure we saw the back of it.
I was expecting it to be like,but it, it protrudes right out.
Like she's got a pool or somethingin the back of it as well.

(17:03):
So.
It's, it's quite, I mean,
um, it's an earthquake prone area.
Yeah.
More fun GTA facts, because I knowyou guys love hearing about GTA five.
Um, but in one of the early missions,you actually like attach a, um, like
attach a rope to one of those houses,like the stilts to one of those houses

(17:25):
and pull down the whole back of it.
Oh,
oh yeah.
It's fun.
And then as you're driving past,you see like, like as the story
progresses, you see like constructioncrew starting to fix it up.
It's really cool.
Um, also when I first this, um, Iwas at like, once the Hollywood sign
fell down, I was like, ah, actuallysurprised it took until season four

(17:48):
for them to break the Hollywood sign.
Yes.
Considering it's a majorlandmark of the city.
Yeah.
Probably took them that longto get permission to do it.
So yeah, we're in the,um, the "Ollywood" Hills.
And there's a wide shot ofSylvia's house down the hill and
we go inside and Athena is okay.

(18:11):
She is coughing, but shemanages to pull herself up.
Um, Sylvia's also, okay, like Athena asksif she's all right and she says No, but as
Athena says "Me either, but we're alive."
Yeah.
If she's not hurt yet, shelooks okay in my, yeah.
Sylvia's, "This is whyI don't leave the house.
Bad things happen," and Athena'slike, "This bad thing happened

(18:33):
while you were in the house." Like,
yeah.
That argument no longer,um, holds any weight.
Yeah.
This is funny 'cause she, uh,Athena asked her if she has a cell
phone and Sylvia says she doesn't.
But then Athena says that sheleft her phone in her car and
she lost her radio in the fall.

(18:53):
But she finds it again a bitlater because she radios dispatch.
Yeah, she does find it.
Yeah.
She finds it while she'sclimbing back up later.
Does that mean that Sylvia,like Sylvia works from home?
We establish that.
Does that mean that she'sexclusively used a landline?
She doesn't have a smartphone at all.
I guess so.

(19:14):
Yeah.
A smartphone and a desktop computer.
Oh my God.
Well, she hasn't beenoutside for seven years,
but, but you don't use the, youdon't internet use a smartphone
to, you know, talk, it's likegames and, and stuff like that.
She's got a computer for that.
It's like looking up IMDB.
What else do you do with it?
Yeah, so, yes, so they're, they areincommunicado with the outside world.

(19:36):
There is, um, they can see sunlight comingthrough, uh, a hole in the side of the
house, which is now their roof I guess.
And Athena says that there aregonna be plenty copters in the sky.
They just have to climbout and signal for help.
Yeah.
Easy, right?

(19:56):
So they start climbing.
Yes.
Um, we find the 118 ata mobile command center.
Uh, it's not just the 118 there though.
There's a bunch of different housesthere and someone, we don't know
what their name is, but there's alady who is the commander type thing.

(20:17):
Right?
Coordinator or something.
Yeah.
Once again, according to the Wikipedia,she has a name, but uh, it's never
used in conversation and I never got agood enough look at either her turnout
or if she has a badge on somewhere.
So I don't know what her name is.
I've just been calling her the BattalionLeader 'cause that's what she is.
I don't know why she's specificallya battalion leader, but that's

(20:39):
what it says on her helmet.
So that's what we're going with.
Sure, why not.
And she's briefing Bobby and Hen,and the only reason I know it's
Bobby and Hen is that Bobby'sgot "captain" on his helmet and
they've got the masks on.
Hen's the only Black person on the 118.
So
Right,

(21:00):
because yeah, they've got face maskson, got face masks and helmets.
All you can see is their eyes.
They've got the niceface mask with like the,
the branding,
the LAFD branding on 'em.
Yeah.
So she tells Bobby about, um,they've only got two casualties so
far, but they're gonna find more.
But the LAPD was evacuatingpeople when the hill came down.

(21:23):
So they're a bit concerned aboutwhat happened with Athena because...
actually did they know thatAthena's out there at this stage?
Maybe that's later.
I think they must do at some point.
There was a scene between Bobby and Maywhere May was expressing her concern
that she had not heard from Athena.
And I think last,
I'm pretty sure it was last week.

(21:43):
Last, yeah, so last week.
Yeah, it was last week.
May was like, "Oh, like mum's outthere doing things," and Bobby's
like, "Yeah, she's working.
Leave her alone." So they do know.
Bobby doesn't know that Athena's trapped.
No, but they do know.
They do know that she'sout on the streets and
Yes.
So they, the look between he and Bobby islike, oh, Athena is out here somewhere.

(22:03):
But the battalion leader obviouslyhas not been caught up on the gossip
that like the captain, the 118and police sergeants, they're like
married, so she doesn't realize thatshe's like slightly put a foot in it.
Yeah.
Um, but yeah, so Bobby does ask ifany officers have checked in with
mobile command and the battalionleader says, not that they've seen.

(22:26):
So Bobby is like keeping Athena in theback of his mind, but he has to work.
So she tells them that theollywood sign is falling down.
Um, there was some hikers in thearea and, and Chim says, "Guess
they should have bought a vowel,"Because all the letters are falling
down and Hen just looks at him.

(22:49):
But they, like Bobby tells Hen andEddie to come with him to the sign
and Chim and Buck have to staythere and search for survivors.
And Hen tells him that that'spunishment for his bad jokes.
And he's like, "no, they're dad jokes."
No, it's just bad.
To remind us that he's gonna be a dad.
Yeah.
So he's like,
just in case we forgot.
"I'm getting in the habit early, I knowI'm gonna be a terrible father." And

(23:11):
it's just like, oh, what Chim you arenot, your jokes are bad, but I'm sure
jokes are terrible.
Um, but yeah, it's, it's interestingthat this episode, they have
Chimney and Buck working together.
Yeah.
I'm assuming
changing it up.
It's because they want oneparamedic on each team.

(23:31):
Yeah, that would make sense.
But yeah, it was justan interesting change.
'cause usually we seeBuck and Eddie doing stuff
While the 118 get to work ,wego back, uh, not go back because
we haven't been there yet.
Um, we go to dispatch, um, whereeveryone else is frantically
working, answering phone calls.
But Maddie and May are just standingwatching television, um, where the

(23:54):
Channel eight news helicopter isflying over the, the Ollywood Hills
and Mount Lee and they show footageof a patrol car that got caught in the
mudslide, which May points out, justso happens to be Athena's patrol car.
And when Maddie questions her like, "areyou sure?" I'm like, Maddie, it says 7

(24:18):
2 7 on top of the car you have calledAthena over the radio enough times,
surely you remember her call sign, um,May says, "Well, I may have like hacked
into the system to find like her location.
So yes, I know that mymother was in that area.
Um, can we like radioher to try to find her?"
And Maddie's like, "Hmm.

(24:39):
We would normally wait for the officersto call in for us," and May gives her
like pouty face, puppy dog eyes, and sheimmediately folds and says, "All right,
we'll make an exception this one time."
As this episode progresses,Maddie is just getting like more
and more done with May's shit.
Like, she's like, "okay, fine,"

(25:01):
It's good training
We'll do it this time.
Um, so she calls, yeah, theydo radio, uh, for Athena and
asks her what is her status,
but of course,
but they don't hear anything.
We've, we've learned earlier that Athenahas lost her radio, so she can't answer.
And May just pouting a little bitand, and tells Maddie and the audience

(25:26):
that, um, you know, she's not evensupposed to be out in the field.
She's on desk duty.
And Maddie's like, "well, youknow what, on my first day
there was a 7.1 earthquake."
Yeah.
So stop your whinging.
Yeah, if I can survivethat, you can handle this.
Um, she does it a little bit nicer away.
She's like " I will give you the sameadvice that Josh gave me on that day.

(25:48):
They, we all have peoplewe love out there.
The best thing that we can dofor them is our job." Yeah.
And then she just immediately dismissesMay and starts picking up calls.
May's like, okay, fine.
Well, yeah, she's busy.
Uh, and, and May does then tryto call Athena on, on a phone.
But you see, Athena doesn'tanswer that either, so.

(26:10):
Yep.
Uh, so Chim and Buck are likewalking into the, up into the hills.
It's all muddy underfoot.
Seems like a risky kind of thingto do, walking up a mudslide, but
they've gotta try and find peoplewho are buried in their houses.
Yeah.
So they're calling for people.

(26:31):
Um, they find someone, but theydidn't make it so they mark
the location and keep moving.
Then Chimney hears something, he hearsthe sound of a baby crying, but it's
a, it's like a weird echoey kind ofsound of a baby crying and they end up

(26:51):
finding, not a baby, but a baby monitor,which I don't know how the hell the
baby monitor ended up where it ends up.
Yeah.
Where, how did it get outside.
Yeah.
How it end up outta the house.
Like it, and it's not even
like it got flung out the window somehow?
Plus it's not even like next to the housebecause then they have to go searching
for the house that it's connected to.
So it's not like it got flung outthe window, it got flung out the

(27:13):
window and taken like halfway downthe mountain or something, um,
and then ended up on top of the debris.
Yes.
But that becomes the questionlike, yes, there's the baby
monitor, so where's the baby?
Where's the baby?
Yeah.
Um, so yeah, for the drama, there'sa magical baby monitor, but they
don't know where the baby is

(27:33):
with incredible range.
Like it's still
the most top of theline baby monitor ever.
The, it's still pickingup like the transmitter.
Uh, but that's it.
We get like, so there's thebaby monitor, where's the baby?
And then boom, commercial.
Like my phone doesn't even workif I'm in like a parking garage.
But sure, the babymonitor works under mud.

(27:55):
It's fine.
I mean, I don't think mud isquite as dense as concrete.
Well, the top of the house they find isactually sticking outta the mud, isn't it?
Like the roof is stickingout so it's not under mud.
But the transmitters like stilldown... anyway for the drama,
like this entire episode.
Yeah, it does.

(28:15):
It doesn't matter.
Sorry.
Um, yeah, so we go back to the,
the Ollywood Hills,
Ollywood Ills um,
where like tour guide Bobby istalking about the history of
the Hollywood Hills because,
oh my God, literally this is like, it'slike Buck info dumping, but it's Bobby
and it's just like, oh, you are his dad,

(28:38):
because God bless him, when Bobbyfirst arrived in LA he did all
the touristy things because hewanted to know more about the area.

shaking and Athena's being flung around,she keeps her finger on the radio.

So they hear rumbling,they hear Sylvia screaming.
Um, and then it's just silence.
And May's having a panic.

All right, so the hikers are stillhanging onto the, the H that's sticking

outta the ground, but, and they, thekid is still in, um, stuck in the
mud too, and they're trying to tellhim not to move because he's getting.
You know, sucked down.

But other firefighters have arrivedand they are laying plywood around,
which allows Caleb and his girlfriendto get down off the, uh, unstable
H and it also allows the 118 toget a little bit closer to Dylan.

The mud is gonna start toconstrict, restrict his lungs.
He is gonna have trouble breathing,but he's gonna be all right.
Although Dylan's like, "I'm gonnadie!" He's sort of panicking.

And then the woman's like,"Help we're locked in!" As

strike with his ax to break it open.

And she tells Amber that shecouldn't leave without her.
So Amber, it looks like Amberdoesn't have family, doesn't have a

thing into the washing machine to beput through probably a very hot wash.
Um, and then he cooks dinner so that bythe time that David comes back out dinner
and wine is waiting for him on the table.

And Michael asked him how was the er?

And he asked how dinner was at Athena'sand Michael says "She thinks you're
not getting enough sleep." And um,David gives like a, um, you know, like

But then, and Chimney, like Chimney hasnot only swapped sides of the camera,
he's swapped sides of the argument.

Maddie is heading to thekitchen with the coffee cups.
When she sort of stops and like makes anoise and like expression of discomfort
and pain crosses her face, Chimneyimmediately goes into panic mode.

Um, but it's nothing wrong.
It's just that, you know, Maddie'shad coffee and the like, mango
loves coffee and he's lettingMaddie know his appreciation
of the coffee and the caffeine.

baby's having some wiggles and kicks
or as Maddie says, babywants to say hello.

And I'm guessing this might bethe first time that, um, mango
is kicked in Chim's presence.
'cause he's like very sort of hesitantas he puts his hands on Maddie's belly

Um, so in terms of seasonopeners, it's pretty weak.

forest, like airplane crash stories wherethe helicopter can't see them and they

You had the tsunami where you had buckand Chris, like right in the middle of it.
It's, the episodes are more impactfuland more um, or more interesting

as the audience when it is actuallyone of the 118 who is in danger.

Like Chim's in danger of gettinglike splat in the face by a fetus.

But that's about it.
But even in, even in the first part,if we are saying this is a two part,

In terms of impactful season openers?

Um, possibly COVID.

all went to Mexico to film that.

And like, it would've been coolif one of them went down to rescue

her and it caved in on them andthey had to find it together.
Like they could have still given herher whole like freeing herself thing

But instead she was just on her own.
