SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Hey, do you want to
come over and make a pot of tea,
bring your favorite crystals?
You know, we could talk aboutour birth charts, spirits, the
latest house bells we've beendoing.
Welcome to the neighborhood.
I'm that witch next door.
(00:26):
Hello.
Hi, neighbor.
Welcome back to theneighborhood.

magical space with me, welcome.
Hi.
It's so nice to see you.
It's so nice to connect withyou.
(00:46):
And if you have been listeningfor a long time, thank you for
joining me again.
This is a special season.
Aren't they all special?
But this is.
This is a special season of ThatWitch Podcast.
season eight and this season wewill be celebrating four years
of the podcast in july which isjust so insanely wild to think
(01:11):
about um one thing that i amgoing to be leaning more and
more into this year is videoprimarily through the wonderful
channel of youtube uh This issomething that we've been
(01:32):
building since almost the verybeginning of the podcast.
The wonderful Jenny SRP, who ismy all things media witch for
That Witch Next Door, has beenhelping me build my YouTube
channel since late 2021.
(01:52):
And...
You know, we're doing reallywell over there.
And it's just something that I'menjoying more and more of.
I am, if you can't tell, thepodcast host in me, I'm a long
form girly.
I don't really thrive in shortform content.
I really blossom.
I really come to life in longform, if you couldn't already
(02:13):
tell.
So this is going to be one ofthose episodes, hopefully the
first of many, many more.
that I'm hoping to get more andmore visual and incorporate more
and more visual components.
So keep an eye out for some morevideo content coming connected
(02:38):
to this episode, connected to, Ishould say, themes around this
episode, Kitchen Magic andKitchen Witchcraft.
Look for more video contentcoming connected to this.
So if you are strictly a podcastlistener, and you don't follow
me on social media yet, or youdon't follow me or subscribe to
me on YouTube yet, I highly, highly recommend that you do so
(03:02):
that you don't miss any of thefun stuff that we will have
coming your way.
I'm excited to add more of thisvisual component, especially as
we really, really dive more andmore and more into witchcraft
and modern magic with each otherthis year.
And so we're kicking seasoneight off with a very exciting,
(03:24):
like, personal favorite subjectof mine.
Are you a kitchen witch?
I was looking it up before theshow, and...
I've only done one other episodeon Kitchen Magic, which, if you
know me at all, is crazy tothink about.
(03:45):
It's crazy for me to thinkabout.
I still can't believe we've onlydone one Kitchen Magic episode.
But then I was getting ready torecord this, and I'll be honest
with you, I have been kind ofnervous.
Like...
I think that I have so much lovefor kitchen witchcraft.
(04:07):
And I think that I identify sodeeply with being a kitchen
witch that it's really, reallyimportant to me.
And so it feels like, don't fuckit up, Dani.
So, um...
This has been a long time comingand I'm very excited to be doing
some more branching out fromthis episode and beyond as well.
(04:31):
We'll have a kitchen magicmasterclass in that witch
school.
That's going to be available toall access members.
And then it's going to beavailable for purchase by
everyone else after that.
So I have this big extensivemasterclass coming where if you
(04:53):
love what you hear today and youwant to go really in depth with
it, uh, All Access member ofthat witch school is definitely
the place to be to get access tothat Kitchen Magic Masterclass
first.
But today is going to be...
a nice general overview.
(05:14):
So in the past, we've done acouple.
We've done, are you a cosmicwitch episode?
Are you a death witch?
Are you a green witch?
And we're bringing these typesof episodes back and beginning
with, are you a kitchen witch?
For me, this cooking and foodthing, And that goes for, you
(05:39):
know, also like craftingbeverages as well.
But really creating in thekitchen has been, man, one of
the oldest parts of me.
I have some of my earliest, earliest memories in being
interested in food and how it'sprepared and where it comes from
(06:01):
and foods among differentcultures and around the world,
throughout different timeperiods, the evolution and
transformation of ingredients.
There's so, so, so much.
I am fascinated by anything andeverything to do with
(06:23):
consumables, basically food andbeverage consumables, I should
say.
So for me, this is an easy, easyanswer question.
Easy question to answer.
Yeah, I'm definitely a kitchenwitch.
This was probably one of theeasiest, most natural forms of
fusing my witchcraft to regular, normal parts of my life.
(06:44):
So I wanted to start out bysaying whether it's kitchen
witchcraft, cosmic witchcraft,death witchcraft, green
witchcraft, anything.
Really one of the best ways tofind out, quote unquote, what
type of witch you are, which ismore of a fun way of actually
(07:05):
saying what are ways you willpersonally really, really enjoy
practicing magic, is to look atthe parts of your life that you
already enjoy outside ofwitchcraft and magic.
What are the things you alreadyreally love doing?
Are you a book enthusiast, reader, writer of any type?
(07:27):
Are you an artist of any type ofmedium, a musician?
Are you a crafter of some type?
Are there things that you build?
What are the types ofactivities, hobbies, things that
interest you and fascinate younaturally most?
I can probably guarantee thatthere's either already a branch
(07:47):
of witchcraft for that, or thereis a way of infusing your
magical mindset in with that.
That's really how all of thesedevelop, you know, a kitchen
witch, a cosmic witch, a greenwitch.
So I do want to say that if youlove cooking and or baking and,
(08:08):
Yeah, you probably are.
You probably are.
If you already really enjoy thatprocess, it's going to feel
really, really natural for youto infuse your magic and
witchcraft into cooking.
And I want you to just trustyour intuition and get creative
and give yourself the space totake your time in the kitchen.
That's where the magic comes in.
(08:29):
That's where you can letyourself be guided by intuition.
That's where you'll feel thatguidance from your ancestors,
your spirit team.
It's going to come prettynaturally to you because it's a
medium you already really enjoy.
Now, I want to shift gears and Iwant to specifically talk to
(08:51):
those of you who are like, okay,I don't even know why I played
this episode necessarily becauseI know I'm not a kitchen witch.
Like I am not into cooking.
I am not into baking.
I don't enjoy this or it doesn'tcome naturally for me.
It's very difficult for me.
There are a slew of reasons whyfor all of these reasons.
(09:14):
Sorry, there's a slew of reasonsfor why you may have these
aversions is what I meant tosay.
to cooking and or baking.
The process of, maybe you're oneof those people who is like, I'm
a total foodie, but notnecessarily when it comes to
actually cooking.
Like, I have this huge palateand appreciation for food, but
when it comes to actuallycooking, et cetera, et cetera.
(09:38):
This might be due to beingneurodivergent or disabled or
having...
Little to no access to differenttypes of ingredients or
appliances or the utilitiesrequired to make this an
enjoyable process.
There, or even a possibleprocess sometimes, depending on
(10:02):
your living situation and thecircumstances that you live
with, there are a ton of super, super valid reasons why
cooking...
baking, preparing of your foodis not really for you and not
really your natural area ofinterest.
(10:22):
I still invite you, if anything,I especially invite you into
this episode, into thisconversation, my friend, because
here's the deal.
If you're not really intoastrology, don't do astrology.
You don't have to do cosmicwitchcraft, whatever.
it might not really come acrossyour plate if you don't want to
(10:47):
deal with it.
The same thing can go for greenwitchcraft in a lot of ways.
If like the plant thing is justlike really at the end of the
day, just not your thing.
There are just types of magicand witchcraft that if you don't
really enjoy them or you're notreally drawn to them, you might
(11:10):
never cross paths paths withthat ever again.
It's easy to avoid.
However, when it comes tokitchen magic, this is a branch
of magic technically thatpresents itself to us every
(11:34):
single day because we all haveto eat food and consume food.
fluids in some way shape or formin order to live we we have to
eat and drink we have to stayhydrated and stay fed so no
(11:55):
matter what that process lookslike for you if you're alive and
listening to this It's somethingthat you have to think about at
the very least every single day.
So this is where witchcraft, magic, a little bit of
intention, a little bit ofmindfulness is something not
(12:19):
necessarily, you know, not to benecessarily afraid of kind of
getting more comfortable with orgetting more and more on board
with, or at least finding yourown unique way of practicing
this daily responsibility foryour own physical health and
life with some sort of sacredintention.
(12:43):
So that's why this of allepisodes of different branches
of magic and witchcraft isspecial in its own way.
When we get to The elementalswill be doing a little series on
working with the elements inwitchcraft and magic this
(13:03):
season.
I'm so excited.
And we'll be doing a lot moregoing into depth with that in
that witch school during thatseries.
We'll see this type ofconversation come up again.
There are types of, there aretypes of or areas of magic that
(13:25):
are, so broad.
They're truly, truly universal.
Elemental magic is one of them.
And I also believe that kitchenmagic is another one of them
because of the physical humannecessity.
that we have to be fed andhydrated in order to live.
(13:46):
So why not, if you're already amagical, energetic practitioner,
why not bring some intentioninto that?
Because that is all that it is.
You can go into this learningprocess, my friend, and your
goal does not need to be so thatyou like cooking.
(14:07):
You don't have to.
Liking cooking...
Doesn't have to be required ofthis entire project, or project,
the process, quite frankly.
This is more of like theconversation around bringing
(14:30):
more magic into your daily orweekly chores, right?
your daily or weekly drivingcommutes, the type of daily
magic that you can do in yourday-to-day job or with your
everyday belongings and toolsand items that you use
(14:50):
frequently.
A lot of this branches into theconversation of what would be
called like house magic andhouse witchery.
But again, these are our mostperformed magic the things that
we experience some of the mostof in our human life are the
(15:15):
mundane tasks that we dothroughout the day every day.
If you had to tally it up by theend of our life, the amount of
hours, That we spent onpreparing our food and consuming
it and preparing our beveragesand consuming them or having to
bathe or having to get dressedor all of these things.
(15:37):
The more, Matt, if we know thatby the end of our life that
these are like, we really dotechnically spend the most, like
majority of our time on thesethings.
Why wouldn't you make that amore magical process?
Why wouldn't you take advantageof that in some way, shape or
form?
(15:57):
This is where, this is the magicthat separates the men from the
boys, so to speak.
That's the energy.
I had to use that exact analogy, but you know what I mean?
Like this, this is where, thisis what starts to separate the
new witches from the experiencedwitches.
(16:20):
Experienced witchcraft looks waysmaller on the surface.
If you were just to zoom in on arandom day in a random time of
an experienced witch's life, theway that they're practicing
magic is going to look on thesurface really, really small.
(16:44):
When we very first getstarted...
And this is all so new.
You know, there's a lot ofgrandeur.
There's a lot of education.
The thought process that has togo into mindfulness work,
intentional magic, intentionaltasks, takes longer, requires
(17:10):
more of us because it'ssomething we're still building a
habit of.
The more that you practice justintentional living, having a
manifesting or magical mindsetso that each thing that you're
doing is with intention and withpurpose, you know, the process
(17:30):
of like getting into that modeor mindset becomes faster and
faster or like, shorter andshorter.
It takes a lot longer at thebeginning and then it just
becomes like a part of youeventually so that you know that
everything you're doing isessentially a metaphor for your
magic.
This is where I want you to letthe preparing of your food come
(17:59):
into play here.
Yes, kitchen witchcraft does andcan look like a specific recipe
with ingredients in it that isfor a spell.
Of course, of course.
Um, I find though that thatdefinition of it is like kind of
(18:24):
what people think the wholepicture is.
And I'm like, no, really being akitchen, which is first and
foremost, um, Probably I wouldsay it's treating your kitchen
and the objects within it assacred.
If I had to say of all thethings I prepared and wrote down
for this episode, if I had tosay like what at the heart of
(18:49):
kitchen witchcraft is, it'sthis.
It's treating your kitchen andthe objects within it as one
giant altar or sacred workingspace with all these sacred
tools.
The more that you treat thewhole entire kitchen that way,
The more that every time you goto prepare food or to rehydrate
(19:13):
yourself, the more every singlething you do is just naturally a
part of your magic.
And therefore, this process ofnurturing yourself becomes this
more and more sacred and specialact of care for yourself and
(19:35):
care for anyone else that thatgets anything from your kitchen,
whether you are cooking directlyfor people that you live with,
like your family or roommates,or if you make food and bring it
to people.
And honestly, in so many ways, just the act of nourishing
ourselves within our kitchenjust by like, Eating our
(19:57):
breakfast that morning before wego to work and interact with the
world.
That's another way that ourkitchen is having this like
radiating impact on the worldaround us.
What we nourish.
Oh my God, I keep almost sayingnurtured.
I keep almost saying nurtured, but I want to say nourished.
So I keep drawing out thenourish.
(20:19):
Sorry, everybody.
I'm really excited about this.
And so I'm really trying tochoose my words carefully.
And it's definitely resulting ina little bit of little
neurodivergent mind glitchesthere, which is hilarious.
That is an example of how whatwe nourish ourselves with in our
(20:41):
kitchen, how that radiates outinto the world around us based
on how we utilize that space andthe items within it.
So if you take only one thingfrom this whole entire episode,
it's that.
I would definitely say takethat.
Treat your kitchen and theobjects within it as sacred.
(21:04):
And you do that, my friend, andyou kind of can't go wrong.
I'll be honest.
You don't even really stop righthere.
You don't even have to listen tothe rest of the episode.
There you go, everybody.
Class dismissed.
No, but that's, it really is thefundamental backbone of kitchen
magic.
(21:24):
So I don't care if you have likethe kind of kitchen that belongs
in a magazine, it's so giant andmagnificent and fully stocked,
or if your kitchen is amicrowave and a mini fridge in a
dorm room, or any situation inbetween or outside of those,
(21:44):
anything, anywhere, any placethat you prepare for and consume
your food, treat it as sacred.
This is where you go back toyour witchcraft basics, okay?
So cleansing, cleanse thatspace, cleanse the tools,
(22:05):
cleanse the objects in there,okay?
care for your kitchen and carefor the objects in it.
So every so often do a deepclean in the, in the place that
you cook your food, care aboutthings like cross contamination,
uh, Educate yourself on that, bythe way.
(22:26):
If you're new at all to cooking,or if you don't already know a
lot of food safety practices, food safety is an excellent form
of kitchen witchcraft.
You heard it here first, folks.
I'm serious.
Learn about like food hygieneand food safety.
And that goes for like not justthe preparation of, but also
(22:48):
like the storing of food, whattemperature to keep your fridge
and freezer at and your drygoods and pantry at and what
types of containers to keepthings in.
When you put thought into thesethings, you're nurturing the
beautiful vessel that your wholekitchen is.
Look at your kitchen as thisbig, beautiful, organic spirit
(23:09):
that you're nurturing.
And the more that you do that, the more effectively it's able
to nurture you right back.
The more effective thosedifferent tools and ingredients
and items are in that spacebecause you put that care and
thought into them.
So, you know, learning basicthings like about how long
roughly is safe to keep foodbefore you need to get rid of it
(23:32):
so you know when to eat it intime or when to repurpose it or,
you know, when to compost orwhatever.
This is a way to be intentionalwith the with the sacredness
that is food.
The more we treat eachingredient and meal and
(23:52):
consumable as sacred, the morenourishing that item,
ingredient, meal, et cetera, iswithin and around us.
So one of the most fascinatingways What do you call that?
Like, I don't know.
The word thing is all I canthink of.
(24:14):
One of those fascinating thingsthat I ever learned.
I don't know.
Maybe you'd call it like there'sstudies.
There you go.
That's probably better.
There are studies, and I findthis so fascinating.
It's one of my favorite thingsabout...
food spirituality, I guess iswhat I'd call it, because this
is way bigger than justwitchcraft and kitchen magic,
(24:36):
okay?
This is way bigger.
This encompasses all religions, all spiritualities, food
spirituality as this hugeuniversal archetypal concept.
There are studies that show thatpeople that treat food as sacred
(24:58):
or pray over their food or speakthanks or gratitude or
affirmations or take this timeto have a spiritual or energetic
connection with the food or thebeverages that they consume.
have better health benefitsusually from what they eat or
(25:21):
better relationships with theirfood.
There's often more effectivehealing that can come from
nourishing from our food.
It's like our bodies are betterable to access the full
potential of our food becausewe're not just letting ourselves
access the physical potential ofit.
(25:43):
When we bring mindfulness to it,we're also taking advantage of
the spiritual potential or theenergetic potential of our food.
And here's the thing.
This is all fascinating becausein food science, you know, we're
talking about food spirituality.
In food science, food and drinksis literally the conversion of
(26:10):
energy.
We take in these resources andconsume it and our bodies
convert it into energy so thatwe can live.
So even just in the plain basescience conversation of this
alone, there is an energeticexchange going on with us and
food and nourishment, okay?
(26:31):
So at the very, very least, Irecommend letting yourself
really lean into that bothenergy physically and
figuratively in a magicalmetaphor, knowing that you are
going under and into thisenergetic exchange with food.
Therefore, it's this sacred act.
(26:52):
So even if it's as simple asincorporating some sort of
prayer routine or affirmationthat you speak before you eat or
while you prepare your food orwhile you Get the dishes out to
eat it on or while you clean upthe mess after you eat.
(27:13):
I have always said that afterspell the clean up, is just as
sacred, can be just as sacredand intentional of an act as the
spell itself.
And this very much goes for likedoing the dishes or cleaning up
after yourself after you eat.
So there are so many differentways you can bring even just
like these little micro doses ofintention and awareness into
(27:35):
this process.
And it will like stronglyamplify this experience and make
eating something that you'remuch, much more present with,
that you will be openingyourself up to reaping even more
(27:56):
of the benefits of food and likefrom our physical health
benefits of the food to ouremotional health benefits of the
food, our spiritual andenergetic benefits of the food.
So go into this knowing that Inthe majority of our culture, in
(28:18):
Western culture, we have beentaught to be very, very mindless
with food.
And probably the most special, sacred, magical thing you can do
is just bring as muchmindfulness into the practice as
(28:39):
possible.
You treat your kitchen as asacred space And you recognize
eating and consuming as thesacred exchange of energy act.
And you have a very strongfoundation of kitchen witchcraft
already beneath you to lead youforward, truly.
(29:00):
Those two things, that's so, so,so much.
But I do want to say thatthere's a couple of different
types of kitchen magic.
So there's...
kind of what I've been reallyfocusing on, which is day-to-day
cooking and preparing of food.
(29:21):
And then there's alsoceremonial, celebratory, the
creating and crafting of feaststype of kitchen magic and
kitchen witchery as well.
Each of these serves just assacred of purposes they are just
different in execution andhonestly this is a beautiful
(29:45):
metaphor for witchcraft itselfthere's our day-to-day mundane
magic and then of course there'sour big curated grand spells and
rituals that we do um orcelebrations or ceremonies that
we perform um It's not thatthere's a hierarchy here.
(30:06):
It's that each serve their ownpurpose and have their own
execution.
Just because the grand, beautiful ritual exists doesn't
mean we ignore the day-to-day.
But just because we have astrong day-to-day practice...
(30:27):
doesn't mean that there's notroom or benefit for those, you
know, going all out kind ofexperiences, celebrations,
ceremonies, and in the world ofkitchen witchery, feasts.
Think about feasts, okay?
(30:47):
First of all, for someone who'stripping over their words, you
know, it's hard to say feasts,so...
so many times without itsounding weird.
But I want you to think aboutthe role of and the concept of
the feast since ancient timesand how that has transformed and
(31:09):
evolved and developed over time.
There are still a lot ofreflections of that to this day.
And really getting some goodinspiration from history, from
the ancients, and then marryingthat with our modern world, our
(31:32):
modern culture, our modernaccessibilities.
This is a really, reallybeautiful way of connecting with
your ancestors, of honoring thepast, as well as embracing
because there's, especially inthe subject specifically of food
(31:57):
and drink, like in modern magic,we don't, in the Western world,
in most places in the Westernworld, I should say, we don't
really think twice about food.
the fact that we're all carryingaround one of these.
(32:18):
And if you're not watching thevideo, I'm holding up my water
bottle.
We all just carry arounddrinking water and can have and
do have access to clean drinkingwater on a level that has made
it something that we are, like,completely...
(32:40):
like disassociated from.
We don't even think, there's so,so many of us that we don't even
think twice about it.
Now, there are plenty of placesin the world, including in the
Western world, that do not haveaccess to clean drinking water.
And this is a humongous, humongous privilege and big,
there's massive disparity there.
(33:02):
But we've come so far in ourtechnology when it comes to
creating access to cleandrinking water, that we are
officially in a time that weshould be getting more and more
and more and more outraged thatthere is anyone in the world
(33:24):
without clean drinking water.
We absolutely have thetechnology and the money and the
resources.
in our global midst right now,I'm sure of it, if we as a human
race could pull our heads out ofour asses, that we should be in
a place where there should beaccess to clean drinking water
(33:44):
for literally all human beings.
I'm confident we've come farenough in technology and
resources that if the rightpeople and the right numbers of
people decided to do that, itwould actually happen.
However, A world existed for areally, really, really long
(34:08):
time, like millions of years.
And if we're only talking aboutlike human civilization years,
still tens of thousands of yearsthat we did not have the
technology to provide that.
access to clean drinking wateron the vast majority scale.
(34:28):
Drinking water was one of themost dangerous things for your
health for a long time in humanhistory before we started really
figuring out sanitationpractices and clean water
practices and technologies.
So first of all, this is whythere's stuff like this that's I
(34:52):
like drawing light to or likebringing light to because I just
think that especially kitchenwitchcraft is one of those
branches of magic that peoplejust blindly are like, we should
just...
practice this the way that ourancestors did and there's not a
single thing to touch andeverything modern is
(35:14):
automatically evil and poisonousto the ancient practices of food
preparation and stuff and likeit's just not true there's so so
much that modern science hasdeveloped and and figured out so
to make food way more accessibleway safer way healthier on way
(35:34):
way way bigger um bigger scalesand hopefully Hopefully, you
know, we only continue going inthat direction exponentially,
hopefully.
But that information about wateralone is so important.
Like the amount of people thatare like, no, this is a feast
that is only to be consumed withwine and it must be red wine.
(35:56):
Well, first of all, there arepeople that don't drink and
consume wine or alcohol likeyours truly.
And also we are talking aboutThese recipes and feasts and
traditions often come from timeswhere it was literally safer to
drink wine than it was to drinkwater because there wasn't
(36:17):
access to clean drinking water.
So this is why we take likeinspiration from and we honor
and pay respect to the past.
And then we marry it with thereality of the current.
like time, modern time that welive in.
(36:38):
This is grounded practicalspirituality, my friend.
So I really want you to, when itcomes to embarking more and more
on your food and kitchen magicjourney, I want you to bear that
in mind because you willinevitably come across
(37:03):
challenges you know, resourceafter resource that will draw
you to the past over and overagain and start painting the
past like this kind ofguaranteed it was better way
back then.
And that's just not true.
You know, let's use a little bitof critical thinking when it
(37:24):
comes to that.
Kitchen witchcraft is not...
less effective because you aremixing your spell in a plastic
bowl than a cauldron or than ahandmade ceramic bowl.
There are so many witches thatwill tell you how horrible it is
(37:47):
to make a spell in a plasticbowl, use a plastic spoon, a
plastic baggie, and the evils ofplastics.
Here's the deal.
Calling plastics evil is thesame fucking thing as calling a
tarot deck evil.
I really want you to let thatsink in.
(38:08):
It's not that plastics are evil.
It's what we have done withthem, how we've consumed them,
and how we have disposed ofthem.
How plastics has been used andabused is where the evil has
been.
The invention of plastic andplastics...
(38:30):
is another one of those thingsthat has been incredible for so
many different reasons.
First of all, ask any parent, are you buying glass for your
toddler to use on their highchair?
No.
No.
We're buying as many things inplastic.
(38:53):
And, you know, if you're able tobuy something that sources their
plastic in a good way or is fromrecycled plastics, those things
are amazing.
Where you're able to do that isamazing.
We also have to recognize that, like, not everybody has the
funds or the access to be ableto do that.
There are tons and tons ofreasons why people can't use
(39:14):
glass or ceramics or cast ironor whatever it is.
There are a ton, again, and Idraw your attention back to
being neurodivergent, beingdisabled, being elderly.
Depending on your livingsituation, your cooking and
kitchen situation, there are amillion reasons why plastic
(39:35):
bowls or cutlery might just bethe more realistic thing for
you.
And there are way too manywitches out there that are like,
that's not real kitchen magic.
That's not real kitchenwitchery.
Our ancestors, our ancestorsnever would have.
Okay, our ancestors couldn'tfathom this, carrying around
half a gallon of clean drinkingwater whenever I want.
(39:59):
That's, I mean, this is a giftright here.
This is a beautiful, that's abeautiful way to practice
kitchen witchery.
is taking that reminder fromthis episode and grabbing your
water bottle and having a deep, deep moments of reverence and
thanks for the fact that youhave access to clean drinking
water and these like beautifulvessels to carry it in that you
(40:22):
can decorate and you havedifferent colors and you can
choose it based on the size ofyour cup holder and your vehicle
you drive yourself around in.
There's, the act of eating anddrinking can lead us to so many
beautiful forms of gratificationtype of magic and worth.
Let me just tell you that much.
So there's just, I want you toknow that as you go further and
(40:48):
further into deepening thispractice for yourself, you are
going to come across books, articles, content from people
telling you that the old waysare the best, that the old ways
are the best.
And you know what?
Do you know how many of thosepeople who say that are very mad
about Another group of peoplesaying a very similar thing.
(41:11):
How is it any different to say,oh, our ancestors did everything
right than make a certain placegreat again, implying that if we
go back, everything, do you seewhat I'm saying?
Like, we have to do the both andthing as modern witches, my
friend, including as modernkitchen witches.
(41:31):
We take inspiration from, havereverence and honor the past,
And we marry that with, realistically, the modern world
and times we live in today withthe knowledge and the new
context that we have today,okay?
That's effective magic.
(41:52):
Not pissing on the past ortrying to perfectly live in the
past either, okay?
Both and.
Bridge the gap, my friend.
And really, the last mainthings...
that you want to take intoconsideration when it comes to
kitchen witchcraft is the energyof your ingredients.
(42:18):
We could have a whole episode onthe ethics of food, and we are
not going to do that.
In fact, I'm not even going totouch into it today because
that's not the subject of thisepisode.
So this is not a conversationabout whether vegan or
vegetarian or pescatarian or thecarnivore diet or the keto diet.
(42:39):
I'm not here to have food ethicsconversation, whether it's okay
or not to eat meat or animalproducts.
I am going to direct you to yourown lifestyle when it comes to
that, my friend.
You have so much better contextfor...
diet choices for yourself than Icould ever possibly, possibly
(43:02):
give you.
Whether or not you're a meateater or an animal products user
or eater, like that kind ofstuff comes down to you, your
culture, how you were raised, your own beliefs, your own
morals.
We're not going into that.
However, I am going to stilltalk about the energies of that
are in foods and ingredients, but I'm talking about the
(43:23):
magical properties, theenergetic properties.
So ingredients are oftenassociated with a certain
element, sometimes more than oneelement, but very often
ingredients are associated withthe water element, the fire
element, the earth element.
There is often an astrologicalcomponent as well.
(43:46):
being associated with a certainzodiac sign and or a certain
planetary ruler.
Ingredients are often alsoassociated with different
deities and spiritual beings.
So if you've ever heard of agoddess of the grain, like
Demeter, for example, in Greekmythology, this is a deity,
(44:09):
various often who oats and wheatare associated with, rice,
quinoa, literally, if it's agrain, it's associated with a
goddess of the grain.
So different deities are oftenassociated associated with
different foods and or foods areassociated with those deities.
(44:30):
Whichever perspective you wantto look at that from, it doesn't
really matter.
But there are these connectionsbetween spiritual beings and
deities very, very often.
My favorite book for that, Ididn't bring it up here.
I have other books to show youat the end of the episode.
My favorite book for that isdefinitely Lou Ellen's book of
(44:51):
correspondences, where it's justvery, very easy to look up a
specific deity and then look updifferent astrological
correspondences it's associatedwith, elements it's associated
with, and then it will oftenhave different animals, trees,
herbs, plants, flowers, etcetera, associated with it, and
(45:13):
then you can connect those tofood.
So for example, if a deity isassociated with cow, with the
animal cattle, Or bull or, youknow, you can go, okay, so I'm
going to draw this red meatconnection here with this deity.
So I personally like Lou Ellen'sbook of correspondences as a
starting place.
(45:34):
But there's many, many wonderfulresources out there for learning
about specific deities and whatdifferent...
Objects, items, and differentthings in our world are
associated with them.
We will definitely be going intomore deity work this season.
But for now, to keep it tokitchen magic, it's most helpful
(45:59):
to try and learn what element offood is associated with.
and or like specific intentionit's associated with.
So apples are very associatedwith love, for example.
Basil is very associated withabundance, for example.
(46:21):
Learning things like that, whattypes of intentions are
associated with food candefinitely help.
Personally, I like learning theelement that a food is
associated with because anelement can connect to the four
elements, earth, air, fire, water, but also the chakras or
(46:43):
energy centers because theseconcepts are so, so, so
connected with one another.
So I like learning more about aneven more broad spectrum
association with the food, likethe element, the type of energy
versus specific intentions, because I just widen my scope a
(47:04):
little bit better.
So for example, citrus fruitsare very associated with solar
and fire energy.
I know what types of intentions, issues, desires can be
associated with the element offire.
(47:25):
And therefore, I will graborange peel or I'll grab lemon
juice anytime I want anythingthat could be connected with the
fire element.
Yes, of course, there arewonderful resources that will go
into a glossary of ingredientsthat tell you what types of food
(47:46):
are associated with love,abundance, protection,
prosperity, health, right?
These types of things.
I like to go even more broad, though, because when you go by
element, this is covering a widerange of those things.
And you'll see even more when weget to a Choosing ingredients to
(48:10):
match your intentions tends tobe like what we...
That's like our go-toassumption.
But you really can...
You can really reverse thisprocess more often, a lot easier
than you might think.
(48:32):
It's a lot easier to just letyour intentions...
infuse into the ingredients thatyou just want to use.
Another thing that you can do isyou can kind of look for the
symbology and the metaphor inthe types of foods that you've
(48:55):
been gravitating toward orcraving or even averting or like
not really enjoying or notfeeling like lately.
So if you have been like really, really craving green foods, or
if you have been really, reallycraving and wanting a bunch of
(49:17):
like grain-based carbs, likebreads and pasta, or if you've
been really craving starches, like veggie starches, like
carrots and potatoes and cornand stuff, you can...
Yes, there's these...
usually these either nutrientdeficiencies or these like these
(49:41):
nutrient needs that our bodyhas.
And that's where these cravingsare coming from.
And then remember the both andlike that's the physical science
of that.
And then what is also thespiritual meaning or the
metaphor, the spiritual metaphoron top of that, maybe look up
what, is associated withpotatoes or look up what is
(50:03):
associated with the color green.
If you're just craving a bunchof green foods, look up what's
associated with the color green.
And maybe you've been cravinglove or heart connection because
green is very associated withour heart chakra, right?
So this is why when it comes tolearning magical associations of
(50:24):
food, take your time.
Learn foods ingredient byingredient, especially based on
the things that you consume themost or are your favorites.
Again, I'll go into some bookrecommendations that definitely
have a lot of your basics inthere and your bases are
definitely going to be covered.
A lot of those are covered inLlewellyn's book of
(50:44):
correspondences as well.
There's tons of great resourcesthat'll cover like the basics,
but obviously food ingredientsis a pretty endless area.
It's truly a never-endinglearning process.
If you really wanted to learnwhat every single food you could
ever eat is associated with, magically speaking, it would
probably take you your wholeentire life.
(51:06):
So there's no race to learninglike, what foods are associated
with love and love magic.
Just take all of this in.
Maybe look up and see if yourlocal library has any of the
books that I've recommendedtoday, or if you can find a good
used copy at a local thriftstore or local bookstore that
(51:27):
you have.
Sometimes what I like to do if Ican't find it at my local
library, is I will go to mylocal bookstore with the
intention of definitely buyingsomething.
I really go when I have thebudget to get something so that
I'm supporting my localbookshop.
But I will plan to spend alittle bit of time there.
I'll plan to go during a time Ican actually like pull out book
(51:51):
by book off the shelf and likereally flip through it and
decide if that's something thatI would want to get and if I
would use it.
Since you can't full on check itout and bring it home like you
can at the library, this isanother way that you can kind of
look through.
But books, when it comes tokitchen witchcraft, this is
going to be something that...
you really, really, really love.
(52:12):
Whether you already love cookingor you are one of those that are
trying to come around to thisprocess a little bit more, books
are gonna be really, reallyhelpful because I have found
that kitchen witchcraft is sounique person to person,
practitioner to practitioner.
Everybody has somethingcreative.
(52:33):
Everybody has some unique ideaor thing that they practice or
something that was passed on tothem.
Like it's such, I mean, reallyevery branch of witchcraft is
probably like that if youreally, really look at it.
But I do, I find this no matterif it, no matter how many
kitchen witchcraft books forbeginners there are out there,
(52:53):
they really do each havesomething unique to offer, even
if a lot of them have a lot ofthe same basic concepts.
Each practitioner puts their ownflair in there.
So I cannot recommend booksenough when it comes to this.
Cookbooks, kitchen witchcraftbooks, food magic books, and
(53:14):
again, learning more aboutelemental magic is going to
really, really benefit younaturally in a type of magic
like kitchen witchery as well.
So also learn your elementals aswell.
So let's look a little bit atsome of my favorite kitchen
(53:34):
witchcraft and kitchen magicbooks that I have collected and
read over the years.
So I think the oldest one Istill have here the oldest I
ever had that I finally giftedwhen I was moving away.
(53:57):
I took a lot of my witchcraftbooks and gave them to my sister
or my friends when I was moving, just different spiritual books
that had served their time withme and were gonna be with
someone else.
So I did like Wicca in theKitchen by Scott Cunningham.
My caveat to that is ScottCunningham definitely vegan and
(54:21):
so there's going to be thatvegan perspective and depending
on you know how you feel withthat that can be something that
you either it really resonateswith you or it can be something
that like brings up guilt foryou or is maybe off putting for
you for, you know, there's nojudgment either way, but I do
want to throw that out therethat if, um, it's Wicca related,
(54:44):
very, very, not always, but veryoften there is a vegan component
just to be aware of.
Um, so that was probably thefirst kitchen magic book that I
ever got was Wicca in thekitchen by Scott Cunningham.
plenty of good information init.
Also had a glossary ofingredients that told you
(55:04):
different associations andcorrespondences with different
ingredients and stuff like that.
But bear in mind, there is alittle bit of the food ethics
conversation in that particularbook.
I also have Supermarket Magic.
This is by Michael Fury.
If you're a longtime listener ofthe podcast, this is not the
(55:26):
first time you're hearing metalk about this book.
I love this book this is anoldie favorite of mine this was
like the second or third kitchenspecific magic book that i got
um this was a book thatintroduced to me going into
public places and putting andvisualizing protective orbs
(55:47):
around yourself before doingthat this was one of the first
examples i read this read thatin or read about that in um in
my earliest earliest days uhpracticing witchcraft.
And that is something that hasserved me well outside of the
grocery store and cooking andkitchen magic.
(56:09):
So again, it's another one ofthose things where I'm like
every single one of these booksprobably has like some little
quirk that like totally changedthings for me, not just in the
specific subject that the book'sabout, but like I probably found
a way to apply it into my lifeand magic in general.
I like supermarket magic becauseyou are going to get some
(56:30):
explanation about ingredients, but it's also organized by
intention with the food orrecipes.
So healing is a whole chapter.
Love, lust, and beauty magic isa whole chapter.
Luck is a chapter.
(56:51):
Money is another chapter, etcetera, et cetera.
There's also a chapter on theSabbats and the Esbats.
So the wheel of the yearcelebrations.
And then there is a littlesection in here about magical
fundamentals.
So this can be for like thetotal, total beginner or the
(57:17):
intermediate, which is ready tolike pick it up and like,
already start rolling.
And then the nice thing is thateach section comes with lots of
different recipes and lists andinstructions, but they also have
shopping lists as well, whichcan be really convenient,
especially if you're a supervisual person.
(57:38):
So supermarket magic is a goodone.
Now, back to our pal, ScottCunningham.
Scott Cunningham is just areally famous Wicca writer.
You've probably read at least orseen at least something of his
or another.
This is one of my favorite bookson magical use of herbs.
(58:05):
There are many, many great booksbooks on healing and holistic
medicinal uses of herbs outthere.
This is magical spiritualproperties specifically.
And as you can tell, if you'rewatching the video, this is in
(58:27):
general a pretty small book ifyou're thinking about the entire
plant kingdom.
So this is definitely not...
a fully exhaustive resource, butit is a wonderful base.
It's a wonderful jumping offpoint.
My biggest, biggest gripe withthis book is that it's not
bigger.
There have definitely been agood handful of herbs that I've
(58:52):
gone to look up and I'm like, Icannot believe that's not in
here.
Because this, how does it just,I wonder if Scott defines An
herb.
I don't know if he defines anactual herb, but that's where we
(59:13):
get a little bit...
Because it's like, well, did wepromise to put every single
edible plant in here?
I guess not necessarily.
But at the same time, some of usdo technically define an herb by
an edible plant.
But then that starts to getsuper dicey because it's like,
okay, so is an apple edible?
(59:33):
Tree and herb.
No, it's a fruiting tree.
Exactly.
So you're definitely going torun into some limits is all I'm
saying.
But it's a wonderful, wonderfulresource for specifically
looking up like, okay, so thefirst page I opened to was
lettuce.
Garden lettuce.
(59:54):
It's for Lactuca sativa is theplant name.
Garden lettuce, lettuce,sleepwort.
These are all different folknames.
It lists the gender of theplant.
So that's another disclaimerI'll put in here for you.
This book was published in the80s, I'm pretty sure.
(01:00:15):
Yeah.
And so it talks about the genderof the plant.
being feminine or masculine, Ipersonally choose to use the
terms polarities and calldifferent things left brain or
right brain.
Some people use polarities Termslike feminine and masculine, but
they say I'm talking aboutdivine or archetypal femininity
(01:00:38):
and masculinity.
Use phrases and terminology thatwork best for you.
But I just want to put that outthere to you that this, you
know, this is written in the80s.
And so it does tell you on eachplant here, the gender, if it's
masculine or feminine.
So you can...
infer your own or you canrelabel it yourself.
(01:01:00):
This is an easy one to find usedusually.
And then you can always like putlittle sticky notes you can mark
in your own.
You can treat this and bookslike this like little grimoires
where you can go and kind of addinto what the author wrote or
you can even change what theauthor wrote by adding in your
own experiences your ownterminology you know maybe a
(01:01:22):
planet Saturn is sitting is herelisted with henbane poison
Saturn is the planetary element.
Maybe you work with this plantand you find that it has this
very plutonic energy about it.
And so you indicate that Plutoseems to be associated with this
as well.
So...
All of these can be jumping offpoints.
(01:01:43):
I love Cunningham's Encyclopediaof Herbs.
It can be a little outdated anda little limited in a few ways,
but overall it has been, there'sa reason it still has a place on
my bookshelf and it's still oneof my most frequently grabbed
reference books to this day.
All right, now.
(01:02:08):
My favorites...
My favorite favorites.
So, The House Witch.
You're probably gonna be like,Dani, you've recommended all
these books before.
Yeah, and if you haven't checkedthem out yet, you need to.
And if this is your first timehere or you haven't heard these
recommendations yet, this is whyI always re-recommend them
(01:02:30):
because there's always somebodywho hasn't seen that episode or
heard that recommendation fromme.
If you have not invested in TheHouse Witch yet and you enjoy
what we talk about here on ThatWitch Podcast, you need this
book.
You will love this book.
This book inspires so much of mymagical practice.
So much came from this.
(01:02:50):
I read it probably two or threetimes.
It is a very quick, brief read, but it's succinct and solid.
And it's Danny in a book becauseI love good jumping off points
like this.
I want you to give me thebasics.
Give me a good, solidunderstanding.
(01:03:11):
Give me a few ideas for someinformation.
for some inspiration, and thenlet me go running with it.
And that's what The House Witchhas done for me.
It opened up, it cracked open myhouse magic.
And house magic is sointertwined with kitchen magic.
So many of the concepts in housemagic, you're going to directly
apply in the kitchen anyways.
(01:03:32):
I highly recommend this book.
So much.
So good.
Okay.
Oh, this is by Erin MurphyHiscock, by the way.
Next.
UNKNOWN (01:03:41):
Next.
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:44):
These have become
little favies of mine.
If you've listened to thepodcast for a while, you know
how much I love The HearthWitches Year.
This is by Anna Franklin.
Also by Anna Franklin is TheHearth Witches Compendium and
The Hearth Witch's KitchenHerbals.
So I don't have either of thesekind of companion books, but
(01:04:06):
they're probably just aswonderful.
I love The Hearth Witch's Year.
So much kitchen magic in here,so much home and lifestyle
magic, but the whole thing isreally centered around the
seasons, the wheel of the year, okay?
And this is often, just like TheHouse Witch, these are concepts
that you are going to naturallyfind and want to already apply
(01:04:29):
in the kitchen.
So The Hearth which is whereyear is an excellent, excellent
resource and inspiration point.
Also filled with lots of goodhistorical information.
We used this book and referencedit here on the podcast very
frequently throughout our Wheelof the Year episodes.
It's a good, it's a really goodsolid resource.
I highly recommend it.
(01:04:52):
Okay.
Kitchen Witchery by LaurelWoodward.
And The Witch's Feast by MelissaJane Madara.
Okay, I apologize to anyone ifI'm mispronouncing any author's
names.
These are two that are newer tome.
I have not covered to coveredeither of them, so to speak.
(01:05:17):
However, I have utilized atleast half, if not more than
half of each of these.
Like I've definitely gottenthrough The bulk of both of
these.
But again, I couldn't say I'vecovered to covered both of them
yet.
However, starting with KitchenWitchery by Laurel Woodward.
(01:05:37):
This is a newer one.
This was published in 2021.
And I love it.
it is very similar to thisepisode where there is some
really good background contexton food and ingredients.
It's going to go into some ofthat food ethics and food energy
(01:06:00):
stuff.
Um, and then getting into the,the energies and the intentions
with that we can harness withinfoods like love, attraction,
fertility, new opportunities, etcetera.
Talking about really infusingthose, um, with your magic or
seeking foods out for those, those purposes.
(01:06:20):
And then you've got a prettygood glossary of ingredients in
this guy.
That's what I really like.
So I just open randomly, um, andI'm in wheat and other flowers
and there's garbanzo flower, hazelnut flower, millet flower,
oat flower, just on these twopages I'm open to right now.
(01:06:42):
Each one has keywords it'sassociated with.
And, um, good, solid paragraphof what is associated.
So like garbanzo, or let's dothe hazelnut flour.
So hazelnut flour is associatedwith fertility, finding,
healing, luck, knowledge, protection, wisdom, and wishes.
(01:07:03):
And then the paragraph says, hazelnuts are also called
filberts.
They are prized for theirflavor.
If you are a Nutella fan, youwill probably go gaga over
hazelnut flour.
Dry roasted nuts are quick togrind into flour.
If using raw hazelnuts, be sureto toast them under the broiler
and rub the skins off before yougrind.
Do not over brown or the flavorwill turn bitter.
(01:07:26):
Add hazelnut flour to recipes toadd energy for fertility, good
health, healing, knowledge,luck, or protection.
Use it to empower dowsing andwish magic.
When I read through KitchenWitchery, I feel like someone is
sharing their kitchen grimoirewith me, and I love it.
I feel like I'm reading anexperienced kitchen witch's
(01:07:47):
notes and experiences thatthey've worked with and studied
about food and ingredients overyears and years of time, which
is probably exactly how thisbook came into existence.
So I have had nothing but goodexperience with this book so
far.
Again, I have not completed itcover to cover, but I've had no
(01:08:08):
drawbacks whatsoever.
in any part of it that I've reador utilized before.
Highly recommend KitchenWitchery.
Now, the other newer one, TheKitchen, or sorry, The Witch's
Feast, A Kitchen Grimoire.
This...
is like for all my aestheticgirlies out there, it is
gorgeous.
(01:08:29):
My little sister gave me thisbook for Christmas.
Yeah, it was Christmas.
And if you're on YouTube rightnow and can see like the glory
of the photography in here, itis stunning.
It's really, really beautiful.
And if you are at all into foodphotography, like I am, Again,
(01:08:54):
because I am a foodie in everyway, shape, or form.
In all aspects of it.
You will really appreciate thisbook.
It is be...
Look at the little metallic onthe cover.
It's gorgeous.
This is my special...
I have a ceremony.
I have a celebration.
(01:09:15):
I have a feast I'm crafting.
This is like I'm spending hoursin the kitchen doing kitchen
magic today.
I'm making a feast for theequinox, or I am making dinner
for Beltane.
I'm pulling out the witch'sfeast first, and I am going to
that specific...
Oh, gorgeous.
Specific feast, and I'm learningabout what...
(01:09:38):
Because each of her spreads inhere...
So there's a feast of Virga.
Let me just go to the, let's goto the table of contents.
That'll be a little bit better.
So there are different feaststhroughout this book.
Feasts of the ancestors.
These are traditional feasts, recipes, and rituals of witches
(01:10:02):
past.
Then there's feasts of thestars.
These are cooking through thewheel of the zodiac.
And then there's Feasts of theHeavens, which is planetary
magic in the kitchen.
So cooking with the sun, themoon, mercury, et cetera.
Feasts of the Earth.
And those are those seasonalfeasts like spring equinox,
summer solstice, et cetera.
(01:10:22):
And then there's Feasts ofSpells.
These are potions, rites, anddinner spells.
Each recipe in here...
and like individual recipe andwhole feasts that feature
multiple recipes all haveexplanation.
So she explains why, why shechose those ingredients, why
(01:10:44):
that food, why it's associatedwith that time of year or that
energy, et cetera, et cetera.
So It gives you the visualinspiration.
It's like so Venus in a book.
It's like this visualinspiration, but it makes you
like, you still bring it intothe tangible by cooking it.
But you're also learning.
And these are such uniquerecipes.
(01:11:09):
This is a great, great exampleof someone being inspired by our
ancestors and ancient practicesand marrying this with our
modern reality and world like wewere talking about.
I love The Witch's Feast.
I have cooked several, not nearall, but I have cooked many
(01:11:31):
different recipes out of hereand loved them.
So highly, highly recommend.
Okay, and then my last littlecookbook here is called Signs
and Seasons.
This is an astrology cookbook.
I asked for this for Christmas afew years ago, five years ago,
(01:11:52):
something like that.
It is adorable.
So the Signs and Seasons, FeedYour Sign, The Food It Craves,
is by Amy Zerner, Monty Farber, with, oh, Amy Zerner and Monty
Farber with Chef John Okas.
Again, apologies if I ammispronouncing any names at all.
(01:12:16):
This is when astrologers andcooks came together and...
magic happened.
This is organized by theastrological wheel.
So it begins at spring withAries.
There is explanation or sorry,it begins with the whole first
(01:12:36):
quarter of the zodiac wheel.
So Aries, Taurus and Gemini.
We've got explanation aboutAries, different information
about the sign itself, how theyeat, how they cook, how they
entertain.
Then we're on to Taurus for thesame information.
Then we're on to Gem for thesame information.
Then it takes us through, oh,does it do all of them?
(01:12:59):
Oh, okay, so we go through thewhole entire zodiac wheel just
at the very beginning.
Then you go into the recipes, which are organized by season.
And the photography and the foodvisuals in here are also
absolutely stunning and gorgeousas well.
(01:13:20):
And each of the recipes hasexplanation about how and why
it's associated with that zodiactime, that season, that time of
year, along with the actualrecipe itself.
This is very, very similar in myhome to the witch's feast, where
(01:13:43):
I really use both of these forceremonial big cooking kitchen
magic.
I am utilizing books like thehouse witch the hearth witch's
year kitchen witchery to informmore of my day-to-day kitchen
witchcraft and i'm using thosebigger books because i'm
(01:14:04):
grabbing them for specificrecipes that i'm either going to
directly make or i'm going toriff off of for an equinox
celebration etc somethingsomething along along those
lines um and then the last booksthat I recommend are the books
that you create yourself.
(01:14:26):
So what each of these are thatI'm holding up is they're blank
notebooks that we have filled.
So this one called FavoriteRecipes, this little binder,
this was just a little blankrecipe binder that we bought at
(01:14:46):
Target.
And like, you know, the like...
upfront cheap section at Target, like 10 years ago or something.
We've had this for so long.
It was probably 10 years ago.
We've had it forever.
And over time, as my husband andI have nailed down our favorite
recipes, we add them in here.
(01:15:07):
So my husband's absolutely outof this world, brown butter
chocolate chip cookies.
They live immortally in thisbook, for example.
Our famous green chili recipe isin here.
Yep, see.
the best chocolate chip cookies.
And there's literally flour andlike chocolate smudges on it.
(01:15:30):
That's the best.
That's what I love about these.
I like a binder for this becauseit makes it really, really easy
to organize, tear out, add to.
We happened to find this cutelittle thing and it's worked
wonders for us.
But any type of little binderand paper notebook or whatever
would work totally andcompletely fine and serve the
(01:15:52):
same purpose.
This is is a grimoire, a littlefamily recipe book.
And we even have a couple ofrecipes from my husband's
grandma in here as well that shehand wrote for us.
And I just keep them clipped inhere anytime that we need them.
Like this is the type of thingthat I want to add to and like
pass on to Blair and maybe shepasses on.
(01:16:15):
I don't know.
This is a grimoire.
This is a book of shadowsthough.
Your recipe book is a book ofshadows.
Don't be afraid to use it.
right in it.
It doesn't have to be beautifuland pretty.
It could just be a standardbinder or notebook that you
start and you eventually can,you can always upgrade it or
change it later, but you shouldstart by writing down the things
(01:16:35):
that you love making the most.
If there's something thatsomeone you love Make something
that is one of your favoritethings in the world.
Ask them to write it down.
If they don't know it, ask ifyou can write it down while they
cook it one day and explain theprocess to you.
This is something that mymother-in-law organized for my
(01:16:56):
husband's grandma, for the wholefamily, really, is why she did
this.
she went to my husband'sgrandma, her mom, and asked her
to write down some differentfamily favorite recipes.
And it turned into thisbeautiful, huge project where
some of her recipes, she knewwhere she got them from, or she
(01:17:16):
was able to just say, but someof them, she hadn't followed a
recipe in years.
It was something that she hadjust made.
And so my mother-in-law wouldwatch her cook it and would ask
her questions and write notesdown and make notes about
measurements and things likethat.
She compiled all of thisinformation into digital and
physical books and ordered themfor all of us and have them
(01:17:38):
printed for all of us so we havethese these notebooks these
collections of her favorite ofall of the family's favorite
recipes of different foods thatthat my husband's grandmother
has made um for years and yearsand years and it has been not
only this i mean we we use itall the time because we love the
dishes in there but it's theprocess that went into making it
(01:18:02):
was beautiful and it's justsomething that is so inspiring
that I think so many of us couldadopt as well and then just to
kind of tie off in the reallytraditional witchcrafty way they
do also have Kitchen Witch blankgrimoires out there.
So this is called The KitchenWitch's Grimoire.
(01:18:23):
This was published by PaganEssentials.
There are a few different typesof journals out there published
by Pagan Essentials that you canfind online.
This is this really simplenotebook that You open it to
blank pages, but they'restructured blank pages.
(01:18:44):
It gives you space to write thetitle of the recipe, how many
servings, cook time, prep time, temperature, all your usual, the
ingredients, and then the steps.
if you want to pair it with awine or a beverage, where the
recipe came from, like if it wasyour own or if you got it from
somebody.
And then it also has a winecomponent next to it, which I
(01:19:07):
got these in my wine drinkingdays.
But this basic structure andconcept is...
so easy to adopt for yourselfyou could get a structured book
like this and follow it exactlyum and fill these in exactly as
(01:19:33):
they're intended.
Oh, and then there's also, Iforgot, there's lunar pages in
here as well where you can writewhat phase of the moon that the
moon was in at that time, if youinvoked any deities during this
recipe, any immediate feelingsor effects from the recipe.
So you can...
It's this threefold of a recipebook.
(01:19:57):
It can also be used as like awine taster or a beverage
taster, as well as a spell bookas well.
You can get something like thisand follow it as intended, or
you can get this and you cantotally change it.
So if you get this and you'relike me and you're like, well,
I'm not really gonna use it forwine.
but I have use on this page.
(01:20:19):
I can change the label for X, Y,and Z, and I can change it to
say this, and maybe I have thisinstead.
Maybe this is going to be thefood recipe side, and maybe this
is going to be the elixir that Imade, especially because every
single feast that I make, Ialways make some sort of elixir,
some sort of mixed drink withoutalcohol for myself to go with
(01:20:41):
the meal that I'm having in aspecial way, especially because
I like to have a drink while I'mcooking as well.
It's usually the first thing Icraft or make before I start the
actual cooking process itself.
So something like this can bereally helpful.
for someone who needs thestructure and doesn't really
know where to get started increating their own kind of
(01:21:03):
kitchen, which grimoire, havingthis structure and like blanks
to fill in can feel reallyhelpful.
This can also feel reallystifling and suffocating for
others as well.
So you might not like somethingwhere you have to fill in the
blank and you might needsomething where you can kind of
like go on a blank page and roamfree.
(01:21:24):
But I still wanted to show youboth of these because we do use
them both in our home fordifferent purposes.
And it is so cool to go back andsee these foods and these
(01:21:44):
recipes that you've eitheradopted or you've created and
how they've evolved over theyears and the memories you have
associated with those recipesthat you've grabbed for over and
over again.
So if you have something, ifthere's like a salad that you
make or a soup that you make ora certain sandwich that you
(01:22:06):
make, it's like one of yourfavorites and you're like, it's
not really, it wasn't reallyfrom a recipe.
It's just this thing that I'vebeen making for forever, but I
love it.
I'm obsessed with it.
I crave it all the time.
Write that down.
Do that process with yourself.
Like I explained with myhusband's family, do that
process with yourself, get paperand something to write out with
and write out how you make that.
(01:22:29):
What are, if you had to measureit, what would the measurements
roughly be?
You know, when you look at itthrough that perspective, What
are some of the magicalcorrespondences of those
ingredients?
If you have this just love forPB&J, if you're like, there is
just, I know it's not like thefanciest thing, but it's like
(01:22:51):
the most nostalgic and I love itand it's comforting and like, I
just love PB&Js.
Look up the magicalcorrespondences for peanuts, for
whatever type of fruit that yourfavorite jelly is made out of,
And wheat or whatever grain ofbread that you're using and go
look up those magicalcorrespondences and turn around
(01:23:13):
and go, oh, that's reallyfascinating, actually, that I no
wonder I love and crave PB&J somuch.
I really it's associated withthis.
You never know.
It's kind of like it's kind oflike learning your birth chart.
Learning these magicalassociations and correspondences
with food and how they show upin our cooking and in our eating
for ourselves, it's a lot likelearning our birth chart where
(01:23:35):
we're like, huh, it's thistotally spiritual lens of
looking through where you don'trealize you've been totally,
you've been in, symbolicmetaphor with the universe
without even realizing it.
And now that you are realizingit, you can now bring even more
(01:23:56):
mindfulness into the act, evenmore intention, and have purpose
in how you choose what tonourish yourself with, how you
prepare what you nourishyourself with, and how you care
for the area and the toolsinvolved where you prepare your
foods and your drinks as well.
(01:24:17):
