Speaker 1 (00:19):
Hi, this is Meg.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
And this is Billy.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
And we are.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
The Adopt Twins.
And this is Billy, and we arethe Adopt Twins.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Welcome to a podcast from two adoptees who are
navigating life loss, moving onand growing up.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
For our adopted friends we hope to bring you a
familiar point of view and forour friends who aren't welcome
to the complicated jungle of howwe get on.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Hey everybody.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
It is Meg from the Adopt Twins.
I don't know if you all haveheard, but last week PBS and
Frontline, with the AP, releaseda investigation into the
adoption practices in SouthKorea.
The documentary is called SouthKorea's Adoption Reckoning.
This one is personal to me, asI am one of those 200,000 Korean

(01:08):
adoptees.
I urge you all to watch it.
I know it is available onFrontline PBS's YouTube channel.
I know it is available onAmazon Prime with PBS.
There is a seven-day free trialto PBS on Amazon Prime Video.
I'm unsure if outside of theStates, it is available, unless
you have a VPN, but if you do, Ireally urge everyone to watch

(01:33):
it and I'd really like to hearwhat you all think of it.
For me personally, there wasnothing new that I learned.
I knew about the falsificationof documents.
I knew about the children beingstolen off the street, telling
families their child has died inchildbirth.
I knew all of these things.
What I appreciated with thisdocumentary, however, is that it

(01:56):
was done by Frontline PBS andit wasn't a one-off thing done
by Adaptees and really doesn'treach far outside of the adoptee
community.
This is something that was on aprogram and is watched by way
more people than just theadoptees.
So I appreciate that it helpedget our story out there to a

(02:19):
wider audience and that thestory that was painted wasn't
one that is the traditionalnarrative that many want to
believe adoption is, which iswhere everything is happy and
rosy.
For some adoptees that is thecase, and I am so jealous of
those adoptees that they havethat type of story.
But for many of us that is notour story, and this helped to

(02:42):
show the flip side to so manypeople who normally wouldn't
hear this side of things.
I apologize if I sound like afrog right now.
I have been battling a cold forquite some time, but I thought
it was important to use thepodcast platform as a chance to
perhaps help get thisdocumentary out to an even wider

(03:06):
audience.
So please watch Frontline PBSSouth Korea's Adoption Reckoning
.
Another thing I recommend wouldbe Justin Chan's Blue Bayou.
I am not happy with thecontroversy around it.
I am not happy with the factthat he basically stole stories
from real adoptees.
None of that is okay by anymeans whatsoever.

(03:28):
However, I feel it is the bestdepiction that I've seen so far
of what many adoptees doactually go through with the
deportation, with not havingcitizenship.
So to get that message out to abroader audience so that we can
hopefully get the AdoptionCitizenship Act of 2024 passed,

(03:50):
I urge you to watch that filmand then I urge you to write
your senators and have themco-sign the bill so that we can
finally get it passed and bringpeace and safety to so many
adoptees who've already livedthrough so much in their lives
and hopefully be able to bringback those that were deported
because it's not their faultthat they were not US citizens,

(04:13):
and they should certainly payfor their crimes.
If they've done things wrong isnot what I'm saying.
They should not get offscot-free, but if it was a US
citizen that did the things, they would still be in this
country, and these adoptees alsostill have the right to be in
this country as well.
And we need better mentalhealth resources, because if we
had them, perhaps a lot of theseadoptees wouldn't have gotten

(04:35):
themselves into the troublethey've gotten themselves into
to then land themselves indeportation.
But please watch both and letme know your thoughts.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
That's all we've got for this week.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Thanks for listening.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
To our fellow adoptees.
We hope you know you have asafe space with us and for our
friends who aren't, we hopeyou've learned a bit more about
life as an adoptee.
