Sympathetic to her situation, Nickels recalls a time when he too got in a heap of trouble with his parents and shares the story with his daughter. It's about a time when he and Tessa with just about Nicky's age, and Nickels went against the rules laid down by his father and decided to venture out into the wilderness nearby their home on Cretaurus. Tessa, who has always seemingly been there to bail him out of trouble, went after him. But did he listen? Would he listen? Can he listen? And, does his childhood memory have some kind of meaning for Nicky, or is Nickels just doing what Nickels does best--talking about himself?
