Speaker 1 (00:36):
A good evening and welcome everybody to Chickens and Petz
and Marlton, New Jersey and the All Pro Philly Players
Show live here on Fox Sports a Gambler and streaming everywhere.
We have been here all through the NFL season and
this is our let me count a thirteenth out of
fourteen victory trays and overall just a fantastic season. He
goes with a fourteen and three regular season and started
(00:59):
the playoffs successfully yesterday beating the Green Bay Packers at
Lincoln Financial Field and moving on to the Divisional playoff
round where they will play the winner of tonight's the
Los Angeles Rams Minnesota Vikings game. Welcome, I'm Gerald Calton,
a long with my co host for the season, Eagles
insider of three decades and enjoying this season's ride with
(01:20):
everybody else, Dave Bandera.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Hey, Dave Gerald, how are you doing tonight? I'm thrilled myself.
We have come through the first rounds of the playoffs,
and while it was I would say exhausting at times
to watch the Eagles labor through a victory, it was
satisfying at the end. All that matters is that you
survive and advance, and I'm telling you the Eagles with
(01:44):
that defense can keep advancing. Well.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It is like an NFL game of survivor, so to speak.
I mean, you don't want to get voted off the
island at any point, and certainly not in round one.
After the season, they had the reward for finishing with
the second best record in the NFC, of course, is
the second seed, of which gives you two home games,
and then if the team that's number one seed, in
(02:07):
this case the Detroit Lions, wins their two home games
then or one home game rather, they will go out
to Detroit in a week from Sunday for the NFC chip.
But I just wanted to go through the scenario, because
if it's not accomplished anything yet, that has been the yeason.
But you've been saying the last week you did give
them credit for winning the NFC East and what they
have done all year, which included the postseason awards, of
(02:31):
which the Eagles did garner quite a few. I don't
think quite as few as many as they should have.
But it's tough. I mean, when we were talking All
pros and you only have one of each position on
the first team and one at each position on the
second and they've got All pros basically sort of three
in each conference in each position, it's tough to get
on there. So for the Eagles, you did have a
first team All Pro season out of Saquon Barkley, who
(02:53):
was just spectacular in his two thousand plus yards as
well as an a Pro Bowl honor. And you also
had the same thing for first team from Zach Bond
and now that was one of the most unexpected, great
pleasant surprises of the season, and he also made the
Pro Bowl. And then you had a mixture of the others.
A J. Brown, a second team All probo did not
(03:14):
go Pro Bowl, correct, And you also had.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Lane Johnson was the first was a pro bowler who
did not go first team All Pro.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
He went second.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
He went second team All Pro and much of his chagrin,
and he certainly deserved it.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
But here's what people have to understand.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
The All Pro team is selected by fifty national sports writers,
and I'm sorry, but you cannot tell me that sports
writers are intently watching every single game. I always used
to think gerald there was an All Pro team from
a general manager panel, But I've asked around and that
must be just a figment of my imagination. It would
(03:50):
seem to me that would be a much more accurate
read on how players are doing around the league. I
think sports writers are not privy to the information or
do they have the time to, you know, have take
a deep dive into game film of every single game
of every single week. So I take it with a
(04:14):
grain of salt. I know it means a lot of
the players. All Pro means much more than Pro Bowl.
Lane was upset so but Jordan Mylatta was pleased. Second
Team All Pro for Jordan. My lot of recognition for Jordan.
Jalen Carter second Team All Pro? Who are you missing
games that he missed and having some you know, numbers
that were not typical aj Brown. For him to garner
(04:37):
that respect was certainly something that he appreciated very much
and uh something he could read all about in the
future weeks.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
And just date the Pro Bowl players. It was Saquon
of course, Lane was also a Pro Bowl player. Cam
Jurgen's getting his first recognition, great recognition, Lannon Dickerson, which
was so three offensive linement on the Pro Bowl and
two on the All Pro and the second team Saint
Jalen Carter and Zach Bonn and whoever Saquon is. So listen,
(05:05):
here's those spectacular and go ahead, here's the question.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Howie Roseman signs both Zach Baon and Saquon Barkley, which
is the, for lack of a better term, most impressive
feather in Howie Roseman's cap.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I agree with that comment completely. I'd also add to that,
I'm asking you, oh, is that.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Which one, Barkley or Zach Bond, who was the more
impressive signing.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
For Howie Roseman. Well, the one that just is the
complete shocker is Zach Bond. Zach Bonn wasn't even a
starter in New Orleans. And I asked one of our
one of my clients and good friends, Jyra Evans, who
was on that coaching staff. I'm like, how did nobody
see the player Zach Bahn was or even try it?
Inside lapacker goes or inside linebackers are really good, so
(05:55):
he's never going to get a look. But so that
is a spectacular fine The thing that would give me
a little bit of hesitation to pronounce that is just
fact that for Howie rosmen is that's more to me
of a team effort, because I think Fangio had a
big part of him turning into the player he was
and maybe even getting claimed off. Basically this scrap heat,
but there are two fabulous signings as well, as I
(06:16):
will also put in there, Dave. The draft this year
was really great, at least on year one, and as
we go through the Eagles that are honored postseason. We
don't have the All Rookie team yet or the Rookie
of the Year, but I think Theels have a good
chance of having the defensive rookie of the Year in
number twenty seven he was so good. And in thirty
three Deshaun or Cooper Deshaun gen Ok, let me get
(06:40):
it right, name Cooper de Gene, especially since he was
our guest and is going to he just finished the
first year of what looks like a spectacular career. Also
seems like he'd be a first team All Rookie defensive players.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
I mean, I look up, I agree, I think how
he has nailed it, and now he's not really in
the top consideration for NFL Executive of the Year. But
when I think back to when he's NFL Executive of
the Year twenty seventeen season, I believe also in twenty
twenty two, I would put the this year's remaking of
the roster right up there and the moves that he
(07:10):
has made. And I'll go all the way down the list,
and I'll include a guy like Zach Bond.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
I mean not Zach Bonn.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Orrin Burks, who he comes in so valuable and set
the tone yesterday in the playoff win for the Eagles
by forcing the fumble on the opening kickoff and then
replaces unfortunately Nikobe Dean and has a really good game
and is going to be counted on heavily moving forward.
(07:39):
How he missed on very few of the moves that
he made.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Well, that's interesting that you bring up that because he
actually seems like maybe he did miss on too. But
the point is, go ahead, who you know, Devin Waite
sure and his price at this point, at this point,
and that was it very fair. Listen, when you add
all those you can miss on a few, and when
you hit so so strongly and unbelievable, they're not just
(08:06):
little hits, They're a huge It's so a little bit
of swinging to missus are okay. But Eagles fans have
to revel in the fact that they had a playoff
team last year. They had a team that went to
Super Bowl two years ago, won a Super Bowl five
years ago, and their GM is out there swinging like
that and making every effort to get back there and
giving them every chance to hopefully, if things go well
over these next couple of weeks, being a third Super
(08:28):
Bowl in seven years, which is unbelievable, would be unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
The rosters deep, the Eagles have a chance. Certainly, the defense,
as we get into the game a little bit, the
defense is championship caliber.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
I mean, I think we've all seen that throughout the season.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
It is no fluke that the Eagles shut down Jordan
Love and Jordan Love, you know, three interceptions four total
turnovers by the Packers. The Eagles have taken the football
away fourteen times in the last three games. That the
interception that Loved threw that Darius big Play Sleigh intercepted
was I believe his first giveaway in four hundred and
(09:01):
nine offensive snaps. So it's not like Jordan Love came
in as a turnover machine. The Eagles defense just turned
them into one.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
And they've done it over and over again. As you
just point out the cumulative numbers of turnovers. But the
biggest turn the stat of every game we talk about
them is a turnover differential for nothing, starting with turnover
on play one with Berks making a hit, our guests
from a couple of weeks ago and recovery by Jeremiah Trotjery.
We've had such a strong guest earlier in the season.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
We have had every time we mentioned a player who's
been on the show, let's make sure we emphasize that.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Okay, And there are a lot of them and they've
all contributed. And you made a mentioned before about the
depth of this roster, and I said to you last week,
I think it's the deepest Eagles team I've ever seen.
And potentially will go down as the best draft, and
time has to play a factor in that kind of
playing out like a number of years. But I'm just
so excited about what they've done and what is ahead
for them, and also the two amongst the two biggest
(09:58):
signings are the coordinators, both the offensive and defensive, who
have both done terrific jobs. And as we went into
this season, Dave to me the biggest question mark was
what would that defense be A lot of personnel turnover,
a new coordinator, and that was kind of the achilles
heels he went down the stretch last year. I agree.
I was very confident the offense, and the offense seemed
to me to only get better by any Saquon Barkley
(10:20):
and I got better to a level at the running
back position in the running game that I didn't even
expect to be as good as it was. But the
defense was really the big, if not surprise, at least,
the unanswered question coming in that wasn't just answered, was
answered so emphatically with one of the best defenses in
the Eagles history and one of the best and maybe
the best defense in the league.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
With this perspective, one year ago, the Eagles were preparing
to play for the in the NFC Wild Card playoff game,
the Monday night game in Tampa, with Matt Patricia as
the defensive coordinator, having replaced Sean Decide, and I remember
thinking that, Okay, it was really a tough stretch down
(11:04):
the final month of the season, but boy, the Eagles
have said all the right things this week, and this
is gone all turnaround right now. And then that game
began and Philadelphia's defensive players were running into each other.
They weren't physical, they were giving up gaping holes in
the past game and the run game, and eventually were
blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
So what do you do?
Speaker 3 (11:27):
So you keep your head coach, and you surround your
CEO the head coach with better coordinators, and they go
out and they get Vic Fangio, who had been with
the team as a consultant late in the twenty twenty
to two season. And Vic had just been dismissed by
the Miami Dolphins and the word was that he didn't
relate to young players. And so you bring in a
(11:49):
guy like Vic, and you go, is this just a
relic of a good defensive cord? How good were his
defenses in the past, really impressive resume, and then you
kind of dig deeper and you can find, you know,
people questioning this or questioning that. And then they open
the season in Green Bay and they give up seven
plays of twenty plus yards I think four plays of
(12:10):
thirty plus yards. Jayden Reid with a seventy yard run,
a seven yard chedual. It was insane. What's happening with
the defense? What is has the game?
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Passed?
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Vic Fangio by Baker Mayfield in Week four carves up
the Eagles with a quick three step drop, get the
ball out. Eagles looked really bad on defense, and then
all of a sudden, they come back from the bye
week and Cooper to gen replaces Avonte Maddox at Nickel
and the Eagles tighten things up and better. They got
better and better and better and better, and all of
(12:40):
a sudden, Gerald, we would say, Okay, well they've been good,
but boy, they're playing the Rams this week. That'll be
the real test. And then they shut the Rams down.
Oh well, the Rams were, you know, not that great.
They're gonna play the Ravens this week and Lamar Jackson
and we're gonna see if the Eagles are defense is real. Well,
and then they shut Lamar Jackson and the Ravens down,
and on and on and on and went. The only
blemishes that they have fourth quarter against Washington, very early
(13:04):
in the Dallas game, and I thought the defense looked tired.
And that's why I thought that the benefits of taking
that quote unquote bye week against the Giants would not
only help the offense in Saquon, but the defense would benefit.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
And we saw it yesterday, Well said, I mean, you're
completely encapsulated, but I was giving the defense a little
bit of a passerra in the season because everyone who's
told me about playing for Vic Fangio, about working with him,
said his defense is very complicated. And if you look
back and you trace his history as was he really
(13:39):
a good hire at the time in evaluating it, remember
that he was here as a consultant, kind of senior
consultant in the Super Bowl season two years ago, and
he was a big part of their meetings and strategies,
and unfortunate at that point they did not offer him
the decordinator's job, and he went down to Miami and well,
the timing wasn't right.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
They thought Jonathan Ganning was going to stay, and in
the meantime Fanjo took the DC job in Miami.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Which might have been the biggest loss for the Eals
after the Super Bowl season. We can blame Jonathan Gunnon
maybe for last year to something extent, but we went
through and so in the time of the end of
the the you know, the near miss Super Bowl of
twenty twenty two season, Fandro was going. We had back
yet or playing yet. You had a rookie start in
a corner. You had CJGJ returning to play safety. None
(14:27):
of the rookies or the ear the young defensive lineman
had established himself there, and you had two new linebackers
and n Kobe Dean changes at all three levels, no question,
and so it seemed like it needed just a little
bit of time, but to the level it changed into
his humblie, Well, you didn't even mention, you know, what
they did on the road against Joe Burrow, and since that,
it was just every test that came up, they didn't
(14:50):
just pass with flying colors. They annihilated their opponents and
it was it was fabulous to watch week after and what.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
You've seen from this Eagles defense that's really really impressive
is improvement.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
And that speaks to the quality.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Of the assistant coaches, the position coaches when somebody like
Nolan Smith takes the jump that he has taken from
year one to year two.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Yesterday, two quarterback sacks. I think he had five tackle.
I will give you his statline because it's unbelievable. And
this is a guy who was not being considered by
anybody going into the season or really talked about, and
he yesterday was just a star out there. And he
has been getting better and better all the time. Three
tackles which was a forcists and seven combos two seven
(15:35):
total seven total two seven I'm sorry, three tackle, three
solo tackles for asists for a combination of seven. Two
sacks for seventeen yards its are big losses. Two tackles
for loss which are not the sacks, as well as
two quarterback hits. And that is and he's throwing a
special team tackle. And that is such a dominant performance.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Sacking a quarterback in Jordan Love who had been sacked
fourteen times the entire season and so and he did
it with power, he did it with speed, he did
it with relentlessness, he chases down people backside hustle is tremendous.
He plays with a ferocity that you want to see.
He has improved his repertoire of moves. He is an
(16:15):
extremely confident young man and I think bristled at the
idea that he was not going to be a money player,
and so he has come back with a chip on
his shoulder. Brandon Graham goes down this kid, Nolan Smith
steps up and the Eagles, at the very time they
needed it, got the edge pass rush because that is
(16:36):
your biggest defensive concern with his team.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Do they have enough punch in the pass rush off
the edge?
Speaker 3 (16:43):
And Nolan Smith answered that question emphatically yesterday at Lake
a financial field prease performance from him.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
To take it further, Okay, you made the great point
about Brandon Graham, who was having a terrific season until
he got hurt at mid season. You also had lost
Hassan Reddicks from last year's team. They went out a
sign Bryce hoff who has not really worked out, and
Nolan Smith, the guy that nobody was really counting on
at least from the outside, goes and has this season.
And on top of that, Dave, as you talk about
you know, depth and rotation because d lineman rotate a lot,
(17:13):
but the Eagles have started to use a couple of
their guys all the time on a regular basis. What
do you think percentage wise Nolan Smith played yesterday, it's
spectacularly high percentage. I don't remember him coming out, to
be honest, eighty eight percent. That's just because there's situational
things and he does. But that is a lot. Did
what did Jalen Carter play? J Jayleen's been up near
one hundred percent a lot of the year. He played
(17:34):
ninety four percent. Those are unbelievable numbers. Now, I think
there's a lot of depth here. But if you can
rely on those guys and they're playing with high motor
all game long, how much better off are you?
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Young legs win in sports people, For all you Sixers
fans out there, the young.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Leg we're going to cover a lot of territory yesterday.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
The defense, the special team started off, the defense carried
it through. The offense did justin to win the game.
I know Jalen Hurts wasn't great, but zero turnovers. Certainly
there was some rusts started off with a great form,
great pass protection. First possession, four man pass rush, holds,
it holds, it holds, it finds John Dotson back of
(18:14):
the end zone. Touchdown Eagles and then a JLA Yeah,
then ten to nothing lead and then a long period
of dryness offensively until late in the third quarter early
in the fourth Philadelphia finally got it going.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
All right, Dave, you mentioned a few things says you
tended to cover so much territory in your loaded comments
going into that game. I felt pretty good about the
Eagles chances. The only real concern was Jalen Hurts hadn't
played for a few weeks, basically three weeks from the
last time he had played, and he suffered a concussion,
and we know concussions can be so tricky, especially since
it didn't seem like the hit that he got hurt
(18:49):
on was so bad against Washington. But he came out,
almost came back in, got pulled, and then it was
lingering longer than you'd like to say. You just don't know.
On top of the potential rush from not playing, so
I thought that that was just a potential issue. And
then what do they do. They forced the turnover in
the opening kickoff, and they have a short drive and
go up seven to nothing and really never looked back,
even though they didn't completely open up till late.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Yeah, and that's what happens in playoff football. And look,
I know that the topic is that the Eagles offense
needs to be better. Of course it does. Jalen needs
to be sharp, but they need to have more explosive plays.
I've always been screaming for years and years about chunk plays.
You have to have them in the NFL. You can't
run run, run, run, run, run, run, short pass, short passion.
(19:33):
You need to stretch out the defense. And so there's
things to work on, there's no question about it. But
they didn't turn the ball over. They kept in front
of the sticks, they won the field position battle, and
they won the fourth quarter once again. And that is
something that Eagles have consistently done this season.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
But what Jalen has done, in my opinion, Dave, that
has really made him advance during his career. He gets
a lot of criticism him deep I'm on the crowd
yesterday and man, they are all over Jalen Is for example,
tell me just I mean really on him on every
There was a stretch of I think four straight possessions
that they that ended in punts and not a whole
(20:09):
lot of yardage, and they were on him for that.
I didn't feel like his passing was so off. I
felt like they were playing the offense pretty close to
the vest, and I mean in the second half he
was seven for eight for like ninety three yards in
the second half alone. So they were just kind of
playing close to the vests and seemingly being efficient to make.
And the one time that they really needed to do
(20:29):
anything was when it got cut to sixteen to ten
in the third quarter, and was I guess fourth quarter
at that point. It was just at the start of
the fourth quarter they went right down the field that
culminated in the great touchdown by Dallas Gottard, but he
had some big hits on that. Otherwise, as I look
at this team, the real key through the season and
this is with explosive receivers and DeVante and aj Brown
(20:50):
and a great tight end who was her front fortunate
part of the season, and Dallas Goddard. But you had
to back in Barkley. You say you can't just run, run, run,
but when you have Barkley, it does change the way
he played the game because you want to make sure
he gets enough rushes and with that offensive line, and
I really saw the Eagles key to this team being
so good was the fact that the defense was incredible.
The offensive line is the best in the league, Barkley
(21:11):
was phenomenal, and they didn't turn the ball over more
than anything, those were the keys, and I could see
trying to play the way. No, I don't disagree. As
you advance and play better opponents either, you know, the
winner of this game to neither the rams or the vikings.
And then if you have to go to de short,
you'll have to do a little bit more. But as
long as you don't turn the ball over and are
fishing the defense plays like that, they're gonna have a
great chance in every game.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Interesting statistic Jalen hurts when there was no blitz according
to next Gen NFL next Gen stats.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Ten of twelve, one hundred eight yards and two touchdowns.
Is that interesting? It's really interesting, you know.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
So, I mean, obviously the formula is blitz, Jalen hurts,
and so they're gonna have to have an answer.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
And where's the hot routes and so forth.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
And in his career, he has now tied Nick Foles
for the most one hundred plus passer rating. He's had
a one hundred plus passer rating in full of his
six playoff games in his career. Well, so when he
has a bad game, if that's if that is a
bad game for Jalen Hurts, the Eagles have a dang
(22:10):
good shot of winning the Super Bowl because you hope
it's not.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
To that level that there's more to come with Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
And if that's the case, two touchdown passes, zero interceptions
and a passer rating of one to eleven.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
I mean, I mean, and people are thinking it's a
bad game out there.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I've got because because the expected and and I do
understand that the expectations are high, the weapons are great,
the receivers are there. I didn't necessarily think that the
receivers were open a lot yesterday. Certainly on the on
the fake push push aj was opened down the field,
Davante was opened on a play. I didn't think the offense,
as you said, Gerald was it was kind of pedantic
(22:51):
and and very much.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I did not say the word.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
It was not.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
He was not as as we as we have seen
some things that the Eagles have done with Kellen as
the offensive quarter. It was a very basic approach and
I think that played into it, and I think the
coaches were smart.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
They realized that Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Had missed the last two and a half weeks while
he was sidelined with a concussion, and that when he
practiced during the week, AJ Brown was out there very
minimal amount of time. And DeVante Smith suffered the lower
back injury, he missed a lot of practice time as well.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
So I get it.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
First came in first wild card win at home for
the Eagles in I believe eighteen years, some.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
Crazy number like that. Wow, I didn't even know that one.
You coming up with all sorts of things here, Dave.
It's also the Packers came in banged up and then
just keep kept getting lost.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
They lost they lost two receivers, well, they didn't have
Christian wattson.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
They were missing their big threat coming in, and they
lost their next two and two offensive linemen.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
And on a fourth down play in the fourth quarter,
they throw it to a wide receiver named Heath who's
buried way down on the depth chart, and he had
the one foot out of bounds.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
That's where the injuries hurt them for all the people
that wanted Saquan to go for the record the week before.
Look as you're watching that game yesterday, I was talking earlier.
You know, the path to the super Bowl, and the
NFL gives its first seed in each conference, the biggest
advantage of any first seed in any sport by far,
and you have to win one less game and all
(24:27):
you have to do is win two home games a
year in the super Bowl. But there's big a part
of that, of course, of course, is an extra bye
week in there. While all well, there's six other teams
playing this weekend. The two first seeds are sitting at
home for a week and we went the Eagles had
some guys go down. At one point, Sleigh went to
the locker room. It looked a little scary. He came back.
There were a couple other guys CJGJ went out. But
(24:49):
the big injury, of course is Nikobe Dean has now
lost for the year, and it's just very very unfortunate.
And now now a lot more pressure coming on Berks,
and hopefully he's ready for it. I think he is.
But it's a shame to lose the CA.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
I think teams will target Oran Burks. They will target
him in the passing game. Kenny Blitzer is effectively as
Nikobe Dean. He's been outstanding as a Blitzer. I mean
there's a lot of things that Nikobe does well, does
better in fact than Oran Burks. But Oran does have
the experience. He has been a big time, big game
player and started in last year soon last started last year.
So he will quit himself well as he's done throughout
(25:22):
the season. Another excellent free agent acquisition by general manager
Howie Morosse.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Listen, there's there's the common theme you've heard it for
forever in the NFL, that next man up. But the
Eagles have had the next man up step in and
do incredibly all year long. I don't want to like
lead out a guy like Kakatara, who did a super
job and has really emerged to me as a much
better player and a much better future than he thought.
I thought he was gonna have it. But Dave another
thing on on this offense and the way they go
(25:48):
about it, and I'm sorry, let them go to the defense.
Vic Fangio, I know a lot about his philosophies, some
guys who have played for him or worked with him,
and the way he looks at things and the way
he talks to guys about it, and he always identified.
So he sits in the meetings and they're scouting the
next opponent, he goes, all right, who's their threat, who's
the guy we have to worry about. And for the
green Bay Packers it was Watson. Well, he wasn't there,
(26:09):
and he always says, all right, if not, we're just
going to make them have to grind it out. And
that's what they were going to be able to do.
There were a couple of times green Bay has some
long drives, but they didn't beat them with anything long,
and you never felt that they could. Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
I mean, Josh Jacobs is a terrific running back. I
felt that also for the Packers, they're one wide receiver
whose name is escaping me at the moment.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
It was not Wicks, not Milton, it was the guy.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
It was the guy Jayden Reid who had the big
plays against the Eagles in Brazil in Week one.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Also were out of a game yesterday. He doesn't play
very well the case apparently. No, he had a really
good season.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Good players, but when you have only one real vertical threat,
it's much easier to contend with him than too, and
so Christian Watson not being there was a big loss.
Eagles took away the deep passing game the Packers had
been among the top teams in the league, and plus
fifty yard passing plays and so philadel I just had
every answer.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
And you're right, it's Vic Fangio. Now.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
The one thing he said earlier, Gerald is that Vic
has a complicated system. If that's the case, explain to
me how Cooper de Gene, a rookie, misses most of
training camp, all but one game of the preseason, and
then in game number five, steps in a nickel and
plays outstanding football.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
I'd give it a couple of things. Number one, he's
that good, and he's that smart and that much of
a student of the game. Cooper also a guest on
our show. Thanks for adding that. But and just to
add on those guests, every single guest who came in
here all during this spectacular season was a phenomenal guest
in every way, smart, likable, such a great human being.
(27:45):
And and all the people out there can feel so
good about rooting for this Philadelphi Eagles team. The Eagles
have put such an emphasis on character, and we saw
it every week here and I just appreciate that. And
but so he's that good number one, that's smart, that
much of a And I'm also going to give credit
to the leaders around the team. You know, he was
coming in there and basically replacing Avonte Maddox and Avante
(28:08):
knew it, but Cooper did tell us that Avante really
helped them and Slay really helped them. So I just
think it's the whole culture that is over there allowed
these guys to step in and do the kind of
job that they did all year, and that is the
key to victory in sports.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
It's not the talent that you have, because I would
argue right now that Detroit's defense is decimated, their top
level players are out, but they still are productive. They
have a great deal of chemistry, connection, mojo, whatever you
want to call it.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
It's working for the Detroit Lions. And I'm telling you
for the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
If you come into the building and you're not willing
to be selfless and if you're not willing to be
a team first, the Philadelphia Eagles have no reason to
have you at the Overcare Complex. And I do agree
that that is a big reason this team is so good.
I want to throw one last step before we take
a little break here. It's six thirty or half way
through the show. I can't believe we've already gone through
thirty quick Gerald, will you get to just talk and
(29:01):
talk and talk? Darius Darius Big play Slay twenty eight
interceptions in his career yesterday, the first in the playoffs,
amazing and the first of his season.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Well, there are a couple of person to say that
I know in Detroit. I'm going to say Detroit number
one in the playoffs. But he's been here now for
four years and look at the Super Bowl. The guy
just has a knack.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Now.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
I do think there's something to the fact that this
terrific player was was so good for so long the
teams weren't thrown at him for a little while here
and maybe a different direction, but while he still played terrifically.
I mean, look, Queen Yon Mitchell, who you referred too earlier,
I believe is going to be the defensive rookie of
(29:45):
the year in the NFL. He got his first pick
in the NFL yesterday, and a lot of it has
to do with the fact that teams just didn't throw
to him because He's always there like a blanket. So
Darius Slay is he earned the big play Slay because
he made big play, and he made one yesterday, and
I understand it's a little surprising. I'm surprised to hear
that said. I was not aware of that. Hopefully he
(30:06):
gets more before the end of this year. Last point
before we go to break, it goes back to the offense,
and it goes back to sort of a vic Fangio.
I know from other people in that building, that vic
Fangio if he were to defend your own quarterback, Jalen Hurts.
It's all about because you said that those interesting statistics
as to what he did without it, Blitz, it really
(30:26):
is to pressure him, which is, you know, obviously a
way to play. Most quebacks would also contain him. So
it's all that pressure in the middle and contain it
from stopping it from being able to scrabble and move around.
Hopefully the other teams don't realize.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
That other than a mush rush, similar to what the
Eagles used to do against Michael Vick. It's similar to
he would play Jalen Hurts the same way that he
played Lamar Jackson, Bryce Young. You know all these mobile
quarterbacks that the Eagles have played and frankly have done
really well against. Jayde and Daniel is the lone exception.
(31:01):
Jayde and Daniels won that game from the pocket. He
continued to win last night. Let's talk about the rest
of the NFC playoff picture. When we return, we sure will.
We might see Washington here for the Conference championship. That's
our shot. To get a home game in the Conference Championship.
I sure would be great. All right, we are on
the All Pro Philly Players Show. We are about halfway
through Dave Spadero and Gerald Colton.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
We do not have Negos player this week because we
are in the playoffs and have to be working and
preparing already for next week's game. But maybe we'll have
one before the end of year. If not, we might
have a former player. That's why I'm hoping for next one.
You know what, I can announce you what it is,
I'll tell you after the break. You're listening to the
All Pro Philly Player Show. James Spadero, Gerald Colton. We
are live at Chickens and Pizza and Marlton, New Jersey.
Stick around or come join us before seven o'clock spreads,
(31:45):
totals and all the prop that's in the Twins. It's
the Gambler. Welcome back to Chickens and PiZZ and Marlston
and the all Pro Philly Players show. I'm Gerald Colding
along with Dave Spandera. We flew through that first segment
so far that we went way into what should be
the second segment day. But there is much to talk
about about yesterday's game in the season, and now we're
going to look a little bit around the rest of
the NFC and what's ahead for the Eagles. Yeah, I
(32:07):
think it's an interesting picture.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Washington very impressive last night with its win over the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jaden Daniels continues to do it.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
He is the real deal.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
He is going to be someone the Eagles are going
to keep an eye on very intently for the next
ten years as the Washington Commanders return to NFL significance
and potentially here prominence.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
He's really really poised.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
His mobility is outstanding, his toucher in the pocket, his
game awareness.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Gerald is very impressive. He's done so much to I mean,
he is the overall rookie of the year. It seems
for sure. And he's just been really great and had
a number of last second victories for them, which really
says a lot about him as a rookie, one of which,
of course, was against the Philadelphi Eagles.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
I will tell you that I would expect Washington to
struggle in a big way against the Detroit Lions. That
is a rested Lions team that is an offensive juggernaut.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
The defense not great.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
I just don't know if Washington has enough defensively to
give the Detroit Lions problems.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Your thoughts, well, my client is a cornerback or defensive
backs coach for the Commanders, So it's the only part
of Washington that I like, because you know, I sure
as hell don't root for their owner. And I am
a little bit salvat at the thought of the Eagles
beating the Commanders here in Philadelphia to win the NFC
championship and looking at Josh Harris. Now that being said,
in my little personal preference out of there, I think
(33:35):
that Detroit has to be pretty happy getting them. One
of the things that always strikes me, Dave, by the way,
about the plays and you know this, you know this
feeling so well that this whole season goes along and
then you're all excited for this game and then in
three hours, bang, it's over, and the whole season is
just And it's not like any other sport where you
have series that go on and you get to see
it play out. This is just so it's such sudden
(33:57):
depth each round. And yesterday the Tampa Buccaneers experience that
because they had a fumble late in the game driving
what they thought would be the last score. And then dink,
I mean the Eagles won a playoff game a few
years ago when Chicago dooinduck off and then this one
jinks in for Washington.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
Isn't it interesting that all the statistics in the NFL,
and there are so many of them, the one that
consistently matters the most is the turnover ratio. And when
you see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield put
a handoff into the back hip of a running back,
you go, there's something to be said for pressure in
(34:35):
the NFL. And I feel like in that instance, it
got to Baker, it got to the Bucks, and it
eventually cost them a chance to come to Philadelphia for
the divisional round.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
And I gotta tell you.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
I'm glad I didn't really want to see Todd Bowles again.
He has done a number on the Philadelphia Eagles offense.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
Well, it's interesting. I always go right to turnovers on
a stat sheet because nine times out of ten it's
going to determine it. And then multiple turnovers, even even
closer to ten out of ten, it's it's really incredible.
And you don't even have to watch a game. It's
just strange things happen to make that a victory. And
if yesterday for the Eagles it was four nothing in
their favor, and here we are in around two as
(35:11):
you talk about what is ahead in these playoffs. So
instead of getting the who, you talk again the Bucks
coming in with Todd Bowles, who's done well against us,
used to coach here, knows this team, but we haven't
done well against Baker Mayfield per se. Even though you know,
I still think I take my chances playing here. Those
games are down in Tampa. You now get the winner
(35:34):
of this game tonight that's going to happen in about
an hour or so, and you got the La Rams
under weird circumstances playing against the Minnesota Vikings. Both of
them come in a little bit probably hurt from the
last week. One is, the Vikings had this terrific season,
played for the number one seed, the division Championship Conference
spence record, and got crushed in Detroit last week. That
(35:55):
has to be a little bit reeling from that because
now they have to win three road games and I said,
to go to.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
The marvelous season, all those wins, and they're on the
road as the fifth seed.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Thanks NFL. Really, but that's what happens, and that's how
quickly your season can turn. Could have happened to Detroit
just just as easily, although they played very well in
their list game. And then of course you've got La.
I mean, look, we got to take a second, and
everybody's paying homage to what's going on in La. It's horrific.
They've had to move the game, and I just can't
imagine that the Rams have really been able to focus
(36:28):
on football this week. All right.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Look, I have many friends out there, several of whom
we've had to evacuate. They're in fear of their homes,
everything they own, their financial future, the way that government will,
you know, respond, I mean, there's just so many things.
Loss of human life. It is just far transcends what
is going on on the football field. And these young
(36:53):
athletes who you know, many of whom are think about
twenty two, twenty three, twenty four years old.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
What were you doing when you were three twenty four
years old.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
You certainly weren't balancing a family, home ownership, a professional career,
and a raging inferno that's been gobbling just acres and
acres of homeland and and and constructions of million dollar homes,
and just so it has to be very unsettling, not
(37:23):
just for the Rams, everybody in the organization. So to
make that move to go to Arizona, it impacts your practice.
It I practice, It impacts your routine. And also it
impacts the Minnesota Vikings who were set for LA and
now they're in Arizona, and it helps the Vikings. This
is a neutral environment and I'm sure that there are
Viking I'm sure that tonight it will be a pro
(37:45):
Minnesota Vikings crowd.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
And that's why I believe the Vikings will win the game.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
I'd like to see the Rams next week, but I
do believe the Vikings will win the game tonight.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Well, it gives them a much bigger advantage than they
otherwise would have had going in to LA for this.
And uh, you know, Davy, you said, you know what
was I doing at twenty two type think twenty two
to twenty four. I've been watching this and I don't
have I have lots of friends in the area, but
no one directly impacted, like they're friends of my friends,
but no one directly. And yet I've watched these these horrible,
(38:18):
horrible news clips and you know, reports, and they've really
moved me to tears. It's that sad to watch. And
I do remember, as you're saying that about what was
happening twenty two twenty four, I was actually in law
school and Ruckers came to law school across the river
from Philadelphia, and during my first year in law school,
second semester finals, Philadelphia burnt down, not not it was
(38:41):
it was literally right then college was when Wilson Good
had dropped the bomb on the move house and then
the whole block burned down. And I'm just talking that
was just that was just a one day impact, one
day fire, and then an impact over time that actually
is still impacting a little bit from a financial and
city standpoint of political criminal standpoint, but I was so
(39:02):
distracted just watching that I couldn't I couldn't keep my
eyes off it because the smoke was all over the
place and it was just real tragic in a lot
of loss of life. But that was nothing rare. This
you just reminded me of an inferno that did happen
in Philadelphia right when I was twenty two, twenty four.
But I certainly contained a one city block though, right. Yeah,
But when they dropped the incendiario device, they weren't expecting
(39:22):
that to happen, and why they didn't contemplate the fact
that these rowhouses were all attached to each other and
there was actually a human life down there, and they
and they didn't fight the fire. I mean they intentionally
they thought they'd bring them out. Instead they killed them.
It was horrible. Let's not go backward in time to that,
not to that time anyway. But we had a big
thing happened in Philadelphia that I do want to talk
about for a second before we then come back and
(39:42):
finish with football, and that is the Sixers in the city.
They didn't really come out it right away and announce it,
but it leaked announced been announced that the Sixers timing
wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Well, just as everybody was tailgating for yesterday's game, word
leaks out that the seventy six Ers Gerald I had
a big one hundred and eighty degree reversal.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Well, I don't trust anything that comes out of Philadelphia
seventy six ers, flat out just don't, and I have
good reason not to. I never thought the move should happen,
and I think ninety nine percent of the people in
the city, if not more, agree with that thought. And
it made but it didn't make sense from a city stay.
I pointed a great place to go, and the six
Ers wanted to ruin that.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Now.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
I don't blame them for one of their own building,
and I felt that Comcasts should have gotten ahead of
this thing years ago when they decided to refurbish what
is now the Wells Fargo Center. It's been a few
things else during its existence of thirty years, but I
felt that they should have at that point done something
together with the Sixers, because the Sixers bought the team
(40:44):
from Comcast when they owned both the teams, the Flyers,
Sixers and the building. But they were never going to
want to be tenants forever and be second class citizen
so it's just a shame they didn't work it out before.
It's a shame they put the city through all this.
It's a shame to watch the mayor and city council
act like it's the greatest thing for the city for
them to move and now act like it's the greatest
city the day and that's what matters the rest of it.
(41:06):
It's a great move for everyone. It is a great move.
In the long run, you wish it could be done
a little bit more above wards. So when you say
stuff like interesting that it leaked out, you know during
the four o'clock hours, So what was a Friday usually
a Friday Friday news dump and you know that you
know that as as someone in mount the news as
a journalist for all these years, that is like, okay,
when can we put out and get the least.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
A couple of things that caught my eye interesting that, uh,
the idea that Roger.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
Goodell would get involved, Why do you think that is? Gerald?
I have a theory why I want to hear yours
and they're probably somewhat similar. The fact is that each
team is part of a partnership between its league and
its sponsors and television networks, so and the and the
biggest revenue in all sports is television revenue. The National
(41:54):
Football League blows everything away as we know, and they
make revenue for their properties and seat sales and and
and you know the merchandise type stuff, but is largely
television money that drives everything. And Comcast, the owner of
NBC and other affiliates that are involved. What do we
have now. Peacock streaming games is a partner of the
National Football League as well as the other three sports leagues,
(42:16):
and they all had an interest in making this work.
It did not make sense for Comcasts, the owners of
the Flyers and the Wells fargest owner, to be competing
with the owners of the Sixers for a lot of
dollars that could be shared and better spent in one area.
And I think it was just the best interest of Comcast,
and the other leagues joined in too because it was
It was also Adam Silver, who's who's the commissioner of
(42:39):
the league in which is Sixers playing, wanting them to
stay there, So he's he's going against his own club,
and is it because he wants to support NBC? Also,
I think that's a part of it. How about this
god when he didn't agree with my theories.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
No, maybe maybe there's something that I don't know. Two things,
Once Josh Sapiro said that there would be no state funding.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
That's a Sixers interest within the most Yeah, the Sixers,
they're their prop.
Speaker 3 (43:03):
Their their plan was to go, we're gonna do this private,
private funding as long as it stay. Can you Roder
Goodell recognizing that at some point the Eagles are gonna
want a new stadium here, we don't want any precedent
set that is going to be privately funded.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
I think there's a lot to that theory. I think
I think that can combination. I do believe he wants
to make sure Comcast is happy that is a major
partner in the National FOOTBA League to provides a lot
of dollars for the NBC package and all the other stuff.
But I think I think your point is very very
good because it is important the NFL has new stadium funding.
And it's an interesting point you bring up, Dave, about
(43:45):
the Sixers at some point or the Eagles at some
point wanting a new stadium because that stadium now is
twenty five years old. Yeah, and twenty two. I guess
you opened into but they've they've been building since the
late nineties, early two thousand, so at some point you're right.
It's probably we're still probably at least a decade away,
but we are at some time. And you're right. I
(44:06):
mean all these because when those stadiums Assistants Bank Park
and Link of Financial Will build, it was part of
a deal with the state where Pittsburgh and Philadelphia each
got two new stadiums because they were playing in that
one cookie cutter stadium of three River Stadium and they're
going to stadium too and so so. But those stadiums
were funded a third by the clubs, a third by
(44:26):
the cities, and a third by the state, so with
no public funding whatsoever. I think you're right. Now the
Sixers are in a situation where they have a consortium
of I don't know six seven, at least ten plus billionaires,
so it's really whatever they do is really not that
much to them. You're setting it press. That's correct, and
I think I think that's a very very good theory.
I think my theory is married to yes, and it's
(44:48):
probably it's definitely a combination.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
At the end of the day. As a Sixers fan,
even though I know you're an angry Sixers fan right now.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
Is there anyone who's not? Yeah, for sure?
Speaker 3 (44:59):
Okay, And by the way, Joe I Joel embid out
for the thunder game whenever that is whenever tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
I think fifth straight game foot Spring. You know, I
do want to say something, and then we're going to
get off the Sixers because I get too to two upset.
I know it's a football show, but I'm going to
tie it into football a little bit. The Sixers signed
Paul George in the offseason, who's thirty five years old,
never won anything to I think it was a four year,
(45:26):
fifty million a year, so it's like four year, two
hundred million dollar contract. He said this week that he
is bored playing center, and of course he's playing some
center with Joel embiid out lamp as. He always says.
He's bored. Jimmy Butler, who used to be here and
now wants to get out of Miami, said they have
taken the joy of playing basketball out of him, and
he has. He's in the second last year of a
(45:47):
contact that plays him fifty million a year. So these
are two guys now juxtaposed against what you're talking about
in LA and things like that. To hear these guys
talk about the joy is out of basketball and I'm
bored playing basketball and the guy is saying he's we're
playing basketball plays for a team that wants us to
pay huge amounts of money to go watch him play
while he's bored. I'm just outraged. And you would never
(46:08):
ever here an NFL player say anything close to that,
or he'd be a former NFL player just like that. Gerald.
Speaker 3 (46:14):
There's nothing I can say that disputes any of that.
I agree one hundred percent with you. I think that
NFL players play, they love the game. They know it's
a very limited time. They know that if they don't
earn it, they're gonna get cut. And I think that's
the way you run a sports league. The NBA is
all guaranteed money, and the money is outrageous, and players
(46:37):
run the league and that is the way.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
It is, and that's what they've allowed to happen in
the NFL or in the NBA. Rather no. Look, there's
reasons for it. There's very few players. It is very
star driven. They're very visible. Most people had We had
our players come through here every week and everybody loves
the field of Egals. Everybody watches the Philadelphiegals, and most
people wouldn't even recognize the guy walking down the street.
It is very different in basketball, and of course there's
is so few players playing in the NBA compared to
(47:03):
other sports. But it's just gotten way way out of control.
And Adam Silver, who seems like a very nice man
and a very bright man, I think he has let
the players get way out of control and sort of
run that asylum and it would not happen under Roger
Goodell's watch. And Roger Goodell takes a lot of criticism
and I'm not always his biggest supporter, but he wouldn't
(47:23):
let his league get turned upside down like that. Anyway,
back to football and the Philadelphiagas. As we head to
the champion or the division champion round games ahead with
one game to play, that very much impacts us because
the winner of that game comes here Sunday. So how
do you look at who would you prefer seeing you
(47:44):
expect probably Minnesota to win. Are you happy with that matchup?
Speaker 2 (47:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (47:47):
I would.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
I'm fine with Minnesota. I think that Brian Floy is
their defensive coordinator. Would blitz Jalen Hurts a lot. That
is his m against every quarterback. That is something to
contend with. The Vikings have a really good defense. Now,
we saw them last week against Detroit. Cracks in the
armor when you play a big game, a pressure game,
maybe we saw the real Minnesota Vikings. And the Vikings
(48:08):
did not play a good game at all in Detroit.
And obviously they have a tough time in the recent
past of playing in Philadelphia. So I am fine if
it is the Minnesota Vikings. I am more fine if
it is the Rams. I think the Rams are a
team that the Eagles handled this year. I think the
Rams are a defensive oriented team, good front, good pass rush.
(48:32):
Eagles generally gobble those kinds of teams up. I believe
offensively the Eagles can overwhelm them at the line of scrimmage.
I respect their wide receivers as I do Minnesota. So
I'm really fine with honestly, with both teams. I'm hoping
for tonight, a very very physical game, a long game.
If it's overtime, hey, I'm fine with that too. Both
(48:53):
of those teams are at a significant disadvantage playing on
a short week, coming to Philadelphia on Sunday Primetime game
three o'clock. It's perfect for the Eagles fans who will
have a good time getting ready for the game, and
the atmosphere will be intense at link of financial field.
Speaker 1 (49:10):
I like this matchup no matter who it is.
Speaker 3 (49:12):
Gerald, I believe it will be Minnesota, but I'm rooting
for La tonight, and.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
That's good reason I have learned a long time ago.
I can't get jow any of this stuff. Of course,
whatever happens on the field, just to kind of accept
it as it comes along. But I'm with you in
my same feeling, by the same token. Whoever they get
they have to beat. They have to beat whoever's in
front of them. And no matter what happens this week
coming up, they're gonna have two really tough games ahead
of them if they get that far. So we'll take
(49:39):
them as they come, and you gotta beat everybody in
front of you. Also, have you read any good books lately?
I was just gonna say, go it will. It's just
always interesting things going around the Philadelphia Eagles. Any best
selling about to be Yes, no question about it me.
But the reason I brought it was you are the
(49:59):
proud owner of two conference championship rings as well as
one Super Bowl Champion ring, and I hope you get
another one, really do. But I was. I brought that
to show you that's beautiful. Nineteen eighty three, forty two
years ago. The six ers are going to hopefully not
have to wait another forty two years. But it's not
happening anytime soon. It just slides on perfectly. I guess
your fingers are smaller than mine, but anyway, less less sodium,
(50:23):
fingers longer. My hands are larger than yours. I think
they probably, I don't think so beautiful range, but but
it's it's a wearable ring, and I brought so this
is it's gold, the old yellow gold, with a diamond
in the center, and a whole lot of things on it,
Faux five four, which is the Moses mantra, and defense
(50:44):
and a whole bunch of things. It's a really My
uncle is my guy. I miss he passed away a
few years ago. I missed him terribly, and I wear
this on certain occasions in his memory and his honor.
Does it impress the ladies, No, but it's on my finger.
Maybe maybe the ring does, but nothing else about the
person wearing it does. But no matter what they that
(51:07):
ring you have is so spectacular. But I feel like
they've gotten out of control because it's really hard to wear.
How many times did you wear the idea? Zero? Never?
Speaker 3 (51:15):
I never wear my Super Bowl ring and it's it
is described as a ten table ring, meaning when you
walk into a restaurant, and I'm being serious, the people
from ten tables away will recognize the ring. And Jeffrey
wanted to make the players wanted it to be the
gaudiest ring that could possibly be made two hundred nineteen diamonds.
(51:35):
Street value at the time they was two hundred or
twenty four thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
But of course it's the only one, so it's priceless good.
It means more than any money could buy. Of course,
So I locked away in my office drawer and very
very safe. I was in the locker room with the
six years in La pouring champagne over Moses Malone and
Jolie Servant's head back on May thirty first, nineteenth three
ride in the Super Bowl parade. Now, you of course
(52:02):
got to mc the greatest championship parade in Philadelphia history.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
And yes, I'm hoping for another one, and I was
lined up for twenty twenty two and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
Broke my heart. No, Little, Let's get it done this year.
One last thing, Dave, because I could go on with
you forever. This is like our phone conversation, except hopefully
somebody's hearing this one. Even though where is our picture
up here? Yeah? John? Anyway, our video wasn't I guess
working here today? Oh it's on that small computer. Everybody
(52:33):
coming to the DJ booth with regard to a significant
thing happening tomorrow, something you somewhat referenced in an analogy
that you were even making the analogy. Tomorrow is the
final vote for the twenty twenty five Pro Football Hall
of Fame class, and it will be five people from
(52:54):
the current what they call the modern or or the
people who've been like retired only twenty years. And there's
going to be like some long term or old time
type guys. There is a couple of Philadelphia nearby or
close Star Hearts people. Won is Eric Allen, who was
the guy They don't do the ringing the bellt the
link for the game, but he was the guy. He
was our honorary captain.
Speaker 3 (53:15):
Captain any sing even he leads the fight song, he
does the coin flip, and you know, a great, great cornerback.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
You forget that.
Speaker 3 (53:22):
Eric Allen was only five feet nine and a half
inches tall, one hundred and eighty five pounds.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
I think he made six Pro Bowls. He was a
Pro Bowl and All Pro two or three times.
Speaker 3 (53:31):
He was a lockdown cornerback, never switched over to safety,
played very little zone, was great taking.
Speaker 1 (53:39):
The football away.
Speaker 3 (53:40):
Fifty four interceptions, which his career in eight return for touchdown,
which we were in one season four the fourth season,
you know it. Came into the league as an immediate
starter in nineteen eighty eight before you were born, Gerald,
and finished his career I believe in two thoy fourteen
years in the NFL, and he had six interceptions that
(54:04):
year with the Raiders. So I mean, yeah, a remarkable
run of consistency. And Eric Allen for the second consecutive
season is a finalist. And we are wishing the very
best for Eric Allen. And the process works like this, Dave.
Speaker 1 (54:18):
They have out of all the people who have to
reach a certain stand, about one hundred and twenty five
they vote. There's fifty guys, just like you said, just similar,
very similar to the All Pro team, and they vote
to get it down to twenty five semi finalists. Then
from there they pare it down to fifteen finals and
then tomorrow they'll be in a room. It's now a
(54:39):
zoom room, unfortunately, and I say that because it loses
something over a zoom meeting talking to a lot of
the voters. But they different guys will make their pitches
for guys Paul Domal which is going to make his
pitch for Eric Allen, who is such an important part
and part of the Buddy Rye devas well. I have
an interesting anecdote with Eric Allen, who was just a
terrific person and still is of course, and somebody we'd
all love to see get into the Hall of Fame.
(55:00):
And he represented the Philadelphi Eagles very very well. He
did play with New Orleans and Oakland, as he said,
but in one game he's playing up at the Metal
Lands against the Jets. Eagles against the Jets, Randall Cunningham
got hurt that game. He's staying in the tunnel with crutches.
Eric Allen intercepts the passer, returns all the way and
sort of turned the game around it was like one
hundred and one yard return. I was on. I had
(55:22):
a field pass and was watching on the Jets sideline
because my client, Boomer Sias And was his quarterback who
threw that interception. So for me, it was both a
crushy moment ended uplifting moment because I loved dark And
after the game, I was down in the tunnel and
Eric said, hey, can you give me right home? I
don't really feel like riding the bus. So I drove
Eric home from along with and Andre Waters came with
and they were just somet some great guys from the past.
(55:42):
Another guy is very close and near near and dear
to my heart, to Philadelphia's heart, to Fox Sports, to
Gambler's heart because he used to be my co host
when he started the All Pro Philly Players Show. He
put the All Pro in the All Pro Philly Players Show.
That's Jowry Evans. He's from Philadelphia, Frankfurt High went, went
to Bluesburg, spent eleven of his twelve years in New Orleans,
the other year in Green Bay. He is rated as
(56:04):
the best guard to ever play the game who's not
in the Hall of Fame, And hopefully tomorrow that changes.
We won't know the results until the weekend of the
Super Bowl, correct announ probably that Saturday, and they will not.
Speaker 3 (56:16):
Be told until the commissioner, until the president of the
Pro Football Hall of Fame knocks on their door and
informs them that they've made it. So it is a
very Eric was really nervous yesterday, very excited, I think,
understanding that it could be a long shot for him
to make it, but hopeful that he does get to
(56:37):
the Hall of Fame, you know, in a seven year
and he's only got one more year where he's the
problem is he's he's at the end of the road,
and that is a difficult thing, and it's it's just
it's just unfortunate.
Speaker 1 (56:46):
All these guys uh that are up for finalists are
phenomenal and have had incredible incredible.
Speaker 3 (56:52):
I would say, I would say Eli Manning was not phenomenal. Well,
he just wants to Super Bowls. But he is a
very controversial figure. He's the lightning rod, polarizing.
Speaker 1 (57:02):
Some people very much feel he deserves it, some people
do not, and we will see which way that goes.
But there's also Jared Allen Up and Marshall Yanda, Odam
Vin to Terry and a whole bunch of others, and
hopefully in those final five will be Eric Allen and
my guy Jarryving. So anyway, there's still more to talk about.
Prediction on tonight's game.
Speaker 3 (57:23):
I'm gonna go Minnesota twenty eight, Los Angeles twenty four.
Speaker 1 (57:28):
Okay, that's a good in high scoring game. I got
it more like, but I have Minnesota as well, I'd
say more twenty four to thirteen. We will figure see
who won last week. The big one, of course, will
be next Sunday. We'll be here next Monday talking about
as Eagles go into the division round. They are home
again at Lincoln Financial and let's shoot for another victory Monday.
So appreciate you, thanks sir, great job, John Jansen, thanks
(57:50):
for joing back to the studio. Is it Nick Nick
Beckett Studio? Our fine stanf here at Chickens and Pizza, Marleton,
New Jersey, are proprietors the Cherokees, and we appreciate all
these Chickens and Pizza where the players go the best
place for food and drink all the games. And you
could come here and watch the Monday night game between
the Rams and the Vikings. Seite that will determine next
week's Eagles opponent. You've got the Wreckers, Scarlett and Ice
(58:11):
playing UCLA and basketball that's become painful for me, and
a whole bunch of other things on here at chickis
and peace as always so be After Dave Spondeo, I'm
Jerald Collen saying thanks for listening, thanks for joining us
the Chicken and peace. We'll see you next week. Go birds,
spreads totals and all the prop that's in the tweens.
It's the gambler.
