Video Script: “Restore Elder Pride – A Wake-Up Call for America’s Aging Crisis”

Hello, I’m Jerry Rhoads.

I’ve spent over four decades inside America’s nursing homesystem—as a CPA, a licensed administrator, and the CEO of a restorative care company owning three skilled nursing facilities for setting up Restorative Care Models as franchises based on the brand of “where income is based on outcome”.

My Wife and I’ve walked the hallways, studied the numbers, and witnessed far too many good people fading away in a system that was supposed to protect them. And not warehouse them, as wards of the Obama Medicaid State.

This enterprise model was to revolutionize long-term care into a program of computerized care plans that focused on discharge not confinement to institutional care. Directing the staff to effectively manage their return to community care with family involvement.

In 2006, seventy-seven million baby boomers—people who built this country—began turning 60 then 65 by filing for Social Security at 10,000 per month.  Many of them are now entering long-term care and Medicare or Medicaid at 7,000 per week. But instead of experiencing their golden years with dignity, too many are being warehoused, overmedicated, and forgotten in institutional care without hope oof discharge.

That’s why I wrote Restore Elder Pride in 2013. A sequel to my original Eldercide (You don’t know what you don’t know) 2009 expose’ on ineffective long-term care of the elderly in despicable conditions and caretaker surroundings. With little if no hope in being back home with family.

There’s a better model—what she and I call restorativecare. That requires the long-term care providers to attain positive outcomes to earn the owner’s income … mainly paid for by Medicare and Obama Medicaid … wealth care has shifted the providers from “mom-and-pop rest homes” to vertical conglomerates (Beverly Enterprises owning 3,200) by pyramiding thousands of facilities promising better retirement, not earning their income on restorative care outcomes).

With most of the small communities across the country being left in the dust of the baby boomers who want more but can’t afford it personally.  Thus, depriving them of the right to restorative therapy before being returned home after a crippling chronic disease.

Restorative services are built around three principles:

First, we need to shift away from the outdated medical and social models and instead focus on restoring the function of the mind, body, and spirit. These aren’t just patients, they’re people who can be restored with strength, confidence, for functional recovery, and dignity with a return to the community support service, at a reduced cost to the families and society.

Second, we must customize restorative care using careplanning computer technology and standardized restorative skilled nursing care plans and rehabilitation interventions directed by case managers using case management AI software, who creates case by case individual care plans that assign the work load to skilled professionals that can track progress to measurable outcomes. No more one-size-fits-all chronic care that triggers denied claims, deprivation of skilled care and lost lives.

Third, we need to start paying for outcomes—notjust pill pushing and ineffective group therapy rehabilitation services. If a facility helps people regain independence, they should be rewarded for that.

This isn’t just political. It’s personal. My wife and I were successful in consulting with 145 facilities across the country to handle their appeals and enable them to get theirpatients 100 days of Medicare coverage and discharge 57% of their cases back to home or to community supportive living facilities.

 We’ve been quiet too long.
