SPEAKER_01 (00:05):
Hi, welcome to the
Armed Guardian Podcast.
Season one, episode eight.
Today, David and I will bediscussing holiday gift ideas
for your still carrier armedcitizen in your family.
So sit back, enjoy as wediscussed and give you some
ideas for that special someonein your life.
(00:28):
Hey David, how are you doing, sir?
Doing pretty good, Mr.
Braun.
How are you doing today?
I'm doing good.
I'm doing good.
Have you started your holidayshopping yet?
I haven't yet, but I will bevery, very shortly here.
Yeah, I I know some people areare great at it.
Uh they plan it all year long.
They start looking for the giftson uh clearance after the
(00:48):
current holiday season, and theystart buying for the next year.
But uh yeah, I'm in the sameboat.
I haven't started mine yet, andit looks like it's gonna be um
something I'm gonna be doingquite periodically.
I know from today's date uhwhile we're recording this,
we've got five Fridays leftbefore Christmas.
So it's coming up quick.
(01:09):
So today we're gonna talk aboutsome holiday gift options.
Um, we're gonna discuss uhseveral different things, and
uh, I'll just go briefly discussor list what we're gonna talk
about, and then we'll uh go intoa little bit of detail on each
one.
Um, so some things that you canconsider for your uh loved ones
(01:30):
for uh that are gun enthusiasts.
Uh you've got holster options, you've got optics, lights, dry
fire or training options, targets and shooting supplies,
apparel, and then uh we'll endit up by talking about storage.
Um these are just uh gonna be aquick episode uh just to kind of
(01:54):
give you an idea.
Got someone that's intofirearms, and maybe you're not,
and you want to surprise them, you know, show them that you're
it you're you're interested inwhat they love and uh give you
some ideas of something toconsider for that loved one.
So David, you want to you wantto mention that you wanted to
first talk about the holster, soyou want to uh lead us off on a
(02:18):
holster discussion?
SPEAKER_00 (02:19):
Yes.
Um so just the general overviewof holsters.
Um you have your outside thewaistband holsters, which
basically you can wear on yourhip, but some people like to
wear them more towards the theirback hip portion um covered
outside the waistband.
Uh those are most of the timeopen carry holsters, although
(02:43):
you can conceal them with ashirt or something like that.
If you if you do raise yourarms, they will be no longer
concealed.
SPEAKER_02 (02:52):
Right.
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (02:52):
Um, then you have
your inside the waistband
holsters, gives you a littlemore concealment.
Um also they're a little bit,but with that being said, they
can be a little moreuncomfortable depending on what
kind you have.
And like well, in all reality, Idon't think I've ever found one
that's been extremelycomfortable.
Yeah.
But so that's those are yourmain two as far as waistband
(03:16):
carry.
Then you have uh shoulder carry,um, under the shoulder, think
the old police movies from the20s with the detectives or the
you know, the untouchables, yeah, um, movies like that.
Dirty Harry, they use theshoulder holster.
SPEAKER_02 (03:33):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (03:33):
Um, also, you have
ankle holsters and bag holsters,
whether it be fanny pack, versusI'm not gonna go on and on
right.
I'm just giving you some ideas, some considerations when we're
thinking about holsters.
And Mr.
Brian, if you want to chime inat any time on this, uh feel
free to do so.
(03:55):
But the kind of gun the person'scarry.
If you're getting a gift youneed to and you want to get them
a holster, you need to know whatkind of gun they have.
Right.
Um, if they have a revolver andyou buy them a semi-auto
holster, it's probably not gonnafit.
So it's not gonna look good.
Know what kind of gun they have.
Also, um, what kind ofaccessories nowadays everybody's
putting accessories on theirfirearms, whether it be gun
(04:16):
lights, lasers, optics, um,holographic sites.
We'll talk about that in alittle in a few minutes here.
Yeah.
Um, so thinking about thosethings, because if they have a
lot, then the holster's gonna bedifferent than if they don't
have a lot.
Yeah, same with optics.
So anything you'd got to add tothat, Mr.
Brown?
SPEAKER_01 (04:33):
Yeah, uh no.
We've we've already uhpreviously done a holster
episode, but just to kind of youknow talk about this, you know,
we uh with the considerations, you want to think of what the
person enjoys.
Are they a leather person?
Are they a kydex person?
Uh they make outside thewaistbands and all kydex, uh,
are they make them in allleather?
(04:55):
Uh know what your person thatyou're getting your gift for,
you know, what they like.
Do they prefer leather?
Do they prefer kydex or a hybriduh combination of them?
So uh just just something elseto think about, and then the
security level of it.
Do you want it uh where it's uhlevel zero tension held, or do
(05:16):
you want some sort of type of uhsecurement, whether it be a
snap, a um uh just a twistrelease or something like that?
So just some can those are someother considerations for the
holsters to think of wheneveryou're looking for a gift to
somebody.
So um, you got anything else onon the holsters?
(05:37):
Like this is probably gonna be aquick uh just uh overview uh
episode because we're not gonnago into detail, but we're just
giving you guys some someoptions, some ideas to uh spark
your interest and to get youthinking for your your loved
ones and their uh their toys.
SPEAKER_00 (05:53):
Um yeah, we can talk
about, and I guess now we can
talk about optics.
Okay, um, just a generaloverview on optics, and I'm not
gonna cover everything, justjust some of the main ones that
people use today forself-defense hunting, stuff like
that.
Okay.
Um and at least the differenttypes.
You have your red dot opticsthat just have a little red dot
in the in the uh tube in theretricle.
(06:15):
Um, most of the time they're notmagnified, although you can get
the magnifiers to go with them.
That's a topic for another time.
SPEAKER_01 (06:21):
You've also got open
and close open and closed
emitters on your red dots, uh,especially for your pistols.
Uh, then what those are the openemitters or the the little just
got the glass and it's encaseduh uh uh dirt.
The downfall with those is uhdirt and water and stuff can
affect the red dot, but if youget an enclosed red dot, it
(06:44):
keeps uh everything sealed andyou know it rain, dirt, stuff
doesn't block out that red dotemitter that's on that optic.
So that's something you need toconsider as well, and that goes
back to considering with yourholster.
So that's all I had on red dotthere.
SPEAKER_00 (07:03):
Yeah, and then you
have your your holographic,
which are pretty much verysimilar to red dots, and then
you have your laser um sites, and then you have your scopes,
such as you know, yourmagnification, your scopes are
actually magnified.
Um there's all kinds ofdifferent magnifications.
(07:24):
You can get them with fixedmagnifications, yeah, such as
they may be magnified threetimes or five times or or on up.
But the majority of the ones weuse today um are variable
magnifications.
Yeah, um, they go to differentvariances of of magnification
power.
You can get them pretty prettybig and pretty expensive to to
(07:46):
relatively small.
Um the popular one it seems withconcealed carriers and or with
um yeah, concealed carriers, home defense top situations
would be the LVPOs.
Right.
Um they go from a onemagnification up to pins, some
go to four magnification, daymagnification, six
(08:08):
magnification, something alongthose lines.
They make some of them I thinkgo higher, but yeah, as a
general rule, those are probablythe more popular.
SPEAKER_02 (08:15):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (08:16):
Um, so that's just a
little bit on optics.
SPEAKER_01 (08:19):
Well, and something
else on scopes that uh you know,
if you're looking for your yourhunter enthusiast, uh you know,
you they've got the whole uhscopes where the the reticle
inside is either uh plain, it'sa a black reticle that pops up
on there, or it's could be alighted reticle, or either you
(08:40):
have some of the scopes thathave the night vision
attachment, or a camera, actualcamera where you can take
pictures of the what's beingviewed through the scope.
So those are some others, thoseare a little bit on the higher
end, but uh the lighted reticleinside the scope that uh those
are pretty neat, uh, especiallyif you're shooting in a maybe
(09:03):
not a dark time, a darksituation, but you know, uh a
low light, you're out in thegear stand uh early in the
morning or late at night assun's setting and uh or rising,
and you know it's kind of hardto see that uh overlaid black
crosshairs and stuff on the onthe reticle uh in those
(09:24):
situations.
So having that lighted reticleuh helps uh helps out quite a
bit in those situations.
SPEAKER_00 (09:31):
Yes, absolutely.
And once again, this is not uhthis is a general overview on
scope, but that's to give you anidea as you're looking at.
I think the biggest thing is youknow knowing what what the
person you're looking to buy getfor is interested in.
Right.
And then you know, make makingthe making decision on that
accordingly.
SPEAKER_02 (09:48):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (09:48):
Um, Mr.
Bryan, is there anything thatyou would like to talk about on
lights?
Um, we've talked about lasersand optics, but lights.
SPEAKER_01 (09:55):
Yeah, uh no, you
always have a uh always can
carry a good light with you, andI actually would recommend
carrying a small everyday carryuh light.
Uh, we've briefly discussedthese in an overview episode
when we were talking about uhsome options that we're gonna be
discussing throughout uh some ofour episodes down the road, but
(10:16):
uh just a small palm-sizedflashlight that has an in switch
uh works real good for concealedcarry.
It uh bright enough, all youneed is about uh 60 lumens is
bright enough to do uhdefensively.
Uh, you can get them wherethey're three, six hundred,
(10:37):
twelve hundred lumens.
Uh as goes to the brightness, but uh most of your concealed
everyday carry flashlights wouldbe 60 to 120 lumens.
So um that's something that youwant to you you can get the
brighter things, but they're notnecessarily you know you don't
(10:57):
necessarily have to have them, but just uh have having the
different considerations.
Uh also you're looking forlights, a lot of them for
concealed carry will havedifferent uh light strengths.
Uh you know, they'll have ahigh, low, medium, uh, some of
them will have strobe, just uhdifferent features that each of
the lights have.
(11:18):
Um, is it a rechargeable light?
Does it have a replaceablebattery?
Is it a double A, triple A, oruh lithium battery?
Uh different brands out there.
Uh, if you're looking for aweapon-mounted light for your
rifle or even for your handgun,uh, are you looking how what
(11:39):
type of light are you lookingfor?
Does it fit your gun?
Uh, what type of activationsystem are you looking for?
Like on a pistol, does it have aswitch or is it a pressure
sensitive uh pad?
Uh, same thing on your rifle.
Is it a pressure switch uhsensitive switch where when you
grab it, it turns on and releaseit, turn shuts off?
(12:01):
So those are just some things tothink about with the lights.
Um, you got anything that youwant to can't think of anything
else.
No, I think that pretty muchmuch covers the overview, yeah.
And then we'll talk about uhtraining, uh dry fire options.
Uh they make uh cartridges thatfit inside the firearm, both
(12:22):
your rifles, shotguns, and umpistols that has an activated
laser.
So whenever the trigger ispressed, that it activates the
laser, and you can use that on atarget, uh you know, something
that you're aiming at to checkyour uh accuracy, your sight
picture and sight alignments.
Uh that helps a whole lot alsowith movement of your pistol.
(12:46):
Uh, there's several things uhprograms out there.
Mantis has a uh, I'll just throwthem out there because uh they
actually have a cool system thatI'm looking that's kind of on my
wish list to get is uh youattach it to your actual regular
gun and it will track your gun'smovement during the pressing of
(13:06):
the trigger, so you'll actuallysee how bad or how much movement
you have while you're pressingthe trigger.
Uh so that'll help out with withthat.
Uh you have cert pistols, thelaser-activated pistols that
will um are similar to the shapesize of uh different firearms,
and they use a a laser uh reddot whenever you press the
(13:31):
trigger and it hits that breakpoint, it'll throw a light up on
your target, your wall, orwhatever.
And again, that's just fortraining.
Uh the practicing your triggerpress, your trigger reset, your
site picture.
And then um when we talk aboutdry fire options, you know,
don't forget about just regulartraining.
(13:52):
Get uh if you got somebodythat's uh you're getting a gift
for, and maybe they're lookingat a particular class, you see
that there's a shotgun classcoming up or uh AR class coming
up that someone's offeringsomewhere, and you've heard them
talk about, hey, I really wouldlike to take this class uh one
day or a class on shotguns, andyou know, you find one, get them
(14:16):
a gift certificate or pay fortheir training, get them signed
up, and um you know offer thatto your your loved one.
Uh I'll take all the training.
Anybody wants to buy metraining, uh, just email me and
uh I'll I'll take the trainingif you want to pay for it.
But uh no, all no seriousness.
Uh dry fire and training.
(14:38):
No, we we think about buying theholsters, guns, ammo, stuff like
that.
But uh don't forget thetraining.
Training is real important.
So um talking a little bit abouttargets and shooting supplies.
Uh it's a good thing to buy thedifferent targets.
No, sometimes you can getreactive targets, uh, you can
(15:02):
get the uh self-healing targetsfor uh plates and stuff that
have the polymer, and thenwhenever you shoot it, they
self-heal and you can use themrepeatedly.
Uh a lot safer than steel ifyou're in a close environment.
But um just get them differentuh training aids, uh snap caps,
(15:24):
uh malfunction uh caps uh orammo that uh simulates
malfunctions for them to trainwith.
And anything that you can do tohelp them better themselves is
is a good thing for uh targetsand shooting supplies.
Uh don't forget a range bag.
Occasionally uh range bags getold, dirty, especially if you
(15:45):
use them a lot.
Um maybe they got a loved onethat needs uh earmuffs or safety
glasses, or maybe they haveprescription glasses and you
want to get them a good pair ofshooting glasses.
They they make those uh thatthey can wear that are safety,
but they are also prescriptionwhere they're not having to use
their personal everydayprescription glasses uh for
(16:08):
things.
Uh painting kits, we can alwaysuse painting kits, go through
solvents and stuff like thatquite frequently if you shoot a
lot.
So yeah, that's uh pretty muchall I can think of on just
little things like that.
SPEAKER_00 (16:24):
Anything one of the
things on the earmuffs uh, you
know, that I have come to likeis uh the electronics.
Yeah.
Um, you know, if you're gonnainvest in a set of earmuffs, um
the electronic ones are reallysomething good to look at um
because they cancel the noise soyou can hear what's going on
around you, but yet whenever itgets above a certain decibel
(16:46):
level, yeah, it it cancels it.
So that those are really nice.
I I like the noise canceling it.
SPEAKER_01 (16:53):
And something else
with the earmuffs, you have to
consider are they you can getslim electronic earmuffs or even
slim earmuffs, but are theyshooting a rifle?
Are they using it for handgun?
Because some of the standardearmuffs that you get um are
large, and if you're trying toshoot a rifle and you're leaning
(17:13):
your head up against the stockfor uh sight picture, makes it a
little bit hard or difficult touse those larger earmuffs.
Uh so you got the your slimelectronic earmuffs, you even
got some of the ones that sig, axle, and stuff that actually
are like earbuds that fit inyour ear and their noise
canceling where you can actuallyhear.
(17:35):
And some of them even haveBluetooth where you listen to
music, answer a phone call andstuff while you're practicing
practicing or or shooting andstuff.
SPEAKER_00 (17:45):
So yeah, that's
absolutely absolutely and then
the other thing um I like todiscuss for a minute is you know
apparel clothing.
Um, one would be shoes.
Um having a good comfortablepair of shoes, you know.
Uh that might be something, youknow, can stay at the range and
on your feet all day.
(18:06):
It it uh it's nice to have anice pair of shoes.
SPEAKER_01 (18:09):
Yeah, and also are
you know, are you uh do you
frequent a indoor range a lot ordo you frequent an outdoor
range?
Um that's the outdoor ranges area little bit more rougher on
shoes, so you may want to go tolike a uh boot or something, uh,
or or hiking shoe that's alittle bit more durable than a
(18:29):
uh just a regular everyday pairof shoes.
SPEAKER_00 (18:31):
And you know, a lot
of the shoes for ranges, you
know, they you have vary fromthe boot top shoe to the more
like a running walking typeshoe.
Right.
So you so there are a lot ofoptions out there for that.
Um another thing with apparelwould be you know, as far as
shooting would be bags.
Um you know, having a good agood carry bag for the concealed
(18:52):
carrier, um, maybe to carry afirearm or accessories or or
other other just normal everydaythings that a person might need
need during the day.
SPEAKER_01 (19:02):
Um carrying multiple
guns uh to the range, you know.
Yeah, they have is it uh capableof uh storing multiple guns or
um things like that?
Uh are they take guns and arifle?
You know, you got your carrybags for your uh MSR and other
rifles that you take to therange.
(19:24):
So uh just depending on I guessdepends on what the what they're
carrying and what the the use isof case for or um bag for you
know storage or for uh movingaround with.
SPEAKER_00 (19:38):
Yeah, and I mean,
and then you have your, you
know, are you carrying it foryour normal everyday carry
defensive, or you is it yourrange bag?
I mean, but all that'simportant, or or um, you know,
maybe even jackets, you know, thinking about stuff like
jackets, pants, but those arejust some of the things with the
bags and the shoes that I thinkare important that a lot of
(19:59):
times we don't think aboutenough, but they're they're
important to the everydaycarrier and even going to the
range, um, having a knife bag, having having a decent pair of
shoes.
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (20:11):
Well, talking about
apparel, uh most of the time, I
know whenever I give classes, Itell people don't wear
loose-fitting clothing uh justbecause you don't want that,
especially at an indoor range.
If a casing hits the wall andthen bounces into uh your
between your shirt and yourskin, your body, uh, that's a
hot piece of brass that's uhgonna burn and sting a little
(20:34):
bit.
So you know try to wear nottight fitting clothes, but snug
fitting clothes to help preventuh any of that from you know
occurring.
Uh the casing going a shirt downyour back, uh in between your
glasses.
If you wear glasses, I've hadthat happen.
So just some things to thinkabout for apparel.
SPEAKER_00 (21:27):
Yeah, absolutely.
And now, um I guess we'lldiscuss gun storage.
Yeah, um, this is one of themost often, I feel like one of
the over one of the moreoverlooked um side of the
concealed carrier, right?
Firearm enthusiasts, yeah.
Um, is you have all these nicefirearms and maybe even some
(21:50):
expensive firearms, right?
But what how are we storingthem?
What are we storing them in?
I mean, there's different kindsof storage, you know, at home
when we're on the run, or Imean, or on the on the go in our
vehicles.
Um so we're gonna talk a littlebit about storage.
Mr.
Brian, your thoughts on onstorage?
SPEAKER_01 (22:06):
Yeah, uh storage is
you know, there's a lot of
different options.
Uh, like you touched on, thedepending on what you're doing,
uh, where you're at, it's gonnaplay a part into your uh storage
capability or options.
Uh, so let's uh talk brieflyabout what are the different
types of storage.
Um there are there.
(22:28):
You know, you've got your yourgun cases or gun cabinets, uh,
which could be a stand-upcabinet or it could be a uh just
a locking shelf uh box uh thatstores a gun.
Got that all really all that'sall it does is it offers uh
limited access uh ability tothat firearm.
(22:52):
It's not really a rated for alleven though it may be that's not
really rated for uh major theftor fire damage or anything like
that, but uh got your cases, cabinets, uh I mean cabinets,
and then you got your gunstorage uh vaults or or cases,
uh your safes basically.
(23:15):
Uh so you got those, and thoseoffer usually more storage
capability, they offer a greateruh uh protection against theft,
and then they're also fire ratedfor 15 to 60 minutes, depending
on the the actual rating.
Those are some things that youneed to be aware of.
(23:36):
But uh you got your those safesthat uh are larger typically and
for your your home to homestorage, but they do have also
some small safes sometimes forthe vehicles.
Uh you got some of the ones thatfit in your consoles, you got
some that fit in the headrest ofvehicles, uh, some that fit
(23:59):
underneath the secure to the carunder a seat or in a glove box.
So um that's pretty much thedifferent types of uh uh storage
uh capabilities that we have.
Uh you got some things that youwant to talk on storage?
SPEAKER_00 (24:16):
Um I think you
covered it pretty good, but uh
you know I think an importantthing is uh just understanding,
like Mr.
Bryan said, the differencebetween the the cabinet and the
space and what is your intendedpurpose here.
If you're just looking for aplace to secure your firearm
with easy, with uh you knowlimited access, but if you do
need to access it and get to itquick, then a then a cabinet
(24:38):
might be good.
If you're looking for somethingto secure it fire, then you you
definitely want to go with asafe.
And if you know if you areconcerned about theft, really
concerned, then you then you maywant to go with a safe as well.
So it really depends on whatyou're looking for.
Um and you can get anything asfar as size, you can get
everything from a little likefault safe to hold a handgun
(25:00):
that that you're you can accesswith your fingerprints or or
like a keypad or lockbox to uhbig you know 20 or 30 gun, say
yeah.
Um so there's there's a plethoraof options out there.
SPEAKER_01 (25:17):
Yeah, and some
something else on the home side
of it.
Uh you know, if you've got a gunthat you're using for your home
defense gun and that's all itis, uh your nightstand gun.
Uh unless you're the only one inthe home, uh I'm not really up
for just leaving a gun storedsomewhere.
You know, have it some sousually you want to have it
(25:38):
secured somehow, but they makesome great nightstand bolts uh
that you can attach to youreither your bed, your headboard,
or even to the nightstand thatuh usually are either biometric,
uh they are key coded, or youknow, security pin number that
you put in there to open it up.
(25:59):
And a lot of these nightstandones now are having where you
can have a integrated clock withit, uh charging capabilities for
these uh uh phones that uheither use a USB or the quick
charge without a cable.
So uh those are some optionstoo.
If you you know look if yourhusband or spouse or significant
(26:23):
significant other uh areinterested in something like a
nightstand or or bedside uhstorage capability, and then
also finishing up, I guess, onthe storage, just because you
have a safe uh cabinet orwhatever, think about uh
humidity control.
(26:44):
Humidity is uh uh enemy tofirearms and ammunition, so you
need to make sure you have somesort of um dehumidifier, which
they make some that you pluginto uh electric outlet that
dries out, and then you justthrow it into your cabinet or
safe, and periodically you justtake it out, plug it back up to
(27:05):
dry out the moisture beads onit, and then there are some that
actually have a dehumidifierbuilt into it that uh plugs into
the wall, and you don't have toworry about taking them and
drying out the dehumidifier, themicrobeads, because it
automatically does that, andthen also uh lighting issues for
(27:27):
the safes.
Uh a lot of safes now you caneither buy lights with it
already or buy attachments towhere whenever you open up the
safe, it's got a motion sensorthat it comes on for a short
period of time to allow you toaccess uh whatever you need in
the safe without getting aflashlight or mounting a light
in there.
(27:47):
So um those are just someoptions whenever we're talking
about uh storage, um, things toconsider with the dehumidifier
and lights.
Um that's pretty much it.
Uh anything else you you got,David?
No, sir.
I think I'm good.
All right.
Well, uh this is our uh close, this is our holiday gift guide.
(28:11):
Uh again, we just wanted to dothis to kind of pique your
interest to make you think ifyou got someone that's uh a
Second Amendment gun lover, uh,or concealed carrier home
protector, that you got someideas for them that you know
maybe be different from the thedad getting the tie or the the
(28:32):
Christmas shirt or whatever it'sChristmas sweater or something
like that.
But uh just uh you know kind ofgive you some ideas to spark uh
uh gift giving for your lovedone.
