SPEAKER_02 (00:06):
Hi, welcome to the
Armed Guardian Podcast, part of
the Blueberry Tactical andTraining Network.
Today, David and I will bediscussing carry options and
holsters.
So sit back and enjoy and listento today's podcast.
Today we're gonna discuss a fewcarry options for you, holsters
(00:29):
and uh things that you might nothave seen, might not know that's
out there, and what the bestposition or best way to carry
with these particular items thatwe've got.
So sit down, relax, enjoy yourbeverage of choice, and
hopefully uh you'll pick up someinformation.
(00:50):
So we'll start off with um thereare a lot of options out there
for carrying your weapon.
Uh, some of the things you mightwant to consider are do you want
to carry inside the waistband, outside the waistband, uh,
shoulder, um off-body.
(01:12):
You got any concerns or anyquestions or any ideas on David?
What some other things that weshould discuss?
SPEAKER_00 (01:20):
Well, talking about
ways to carry, I mean,
everybody's different.
You got to find what works bestfor you, and that's kind of what
we're hoping to do in thisepisode here is showing some of
the different options.
I know for me personally, I likecarrying kind of more kidney
carry, smaller the back.
Um as far as when it comes toinside the pants, if I'm
(01:43):
carrying just on my you know, outside the waistband, I like
carrying on my strong side, I'mlike handed strong side um three
o'clock.
Or actually nine o'clock maybe, but yeah.
So that's that's kind of how Ilike to carry, but everybody's
(02:03):
different.
Um, and sometimes I may I may uhcarry differently due to
clothing or or other thingswhere I'm at, whatever.
But that's my preferred.
But uh hopefully this episodewill give everybody a chance to
see kind of what are what's someof the options out there.
There's a lot more options outthere, but it'll get people
looking in the right direction,right?
(02:24):
And kind of help you get tothinking about ways to carry.
You know, you may already befamiliar with some, you may have
your your favorite picks, or youmay be new at this and and still
kind of trying to figure outwhat works best for you.
So we'll start off with thebelt, Mr.
Brian.
SPEAKER_02 (02:43):
Yeah, um, wanna make
sure you have a good sturdy
belt.
Um the typical belts that youfind at Walmart and stuff in a
pinch would do, but over timethey're not gonna hold up to the
weight of the pistol, uh they'renot gonna last long.
Uh, what I really recommend uhand what I use is a two-let
(03:09):
two-ply double-stitched uhleather belt.
And this particular belt that Ihave is from Bursacare, which we
are uh uh authorized uh dealerwith, and we recommend this as
because it's a good, durable,solid belt.
Uh, this particular belt here isone of my newer ones, it's about
(03:32):
two years old.
I've got one that's five yearsold that looks still almost
brand new.
So um just something you want tofind, something that's gonna
support the holster and theweight of the gun and not sag,
bow out, or anything like that.
They do make nylon holsters, Imean nylon belts or um other
(03:55):
tactical belts.
Um I actually did a podcast uhrecently with a friend of our of
mine that uh he actually makesuh everyday carry belts, uh EDC
Belt Company.
Uh throw him out there.
Uh makes a great belt.
He's um, and again, it's it'sthe nylon, it's not the leather,
(04:17):
but uh each each is their own.
Some people prefer the nylon, some like leather.
So it again, there are a lot ofoptions out there, but just find
a good quality belt that uh isdurable and no will handle the
weight of the gear that you'recarrying.
Um, once you move from yourbelt, you want to look at um
(04:41):
your weapon.
You're you know, there's severaldifferent holsters that you can
get for your weapon.
Uh they range from real genericuh everyday holsters to ones
that are a little bit morecomplex.
You've got actually this oneright here.
Uh again, this is a Versa carry.
It's one where the pistol slidesin here, and then it's got a
(05:04):
little magazine pouch that youcan carry a spare mag all
together.
Uh, these here, it's uh outsidethe waistband, uh, goes through
the belt, it's got a belt loophere, and then one on the back
side of the magazine.
And again, it's uh leather, soit's gonna be a little bit
easier than uh kydex on markingand uh roughing up the finish of
(05:29):
your pistol, especially if youhave a custom uh Cerakote or gun
skin or something, it's notgonna wear that out as much.
Um, another option, and again aVersa carry, is this uh holster
here.
It's just the actual holster,it's uh tension.
You can adjust the tension righthere for several different
(05:51):
weapons.
Uh, you can actually change thescrew placements here to hit
your gun specifically.
Uh, this one you can carry oninside the waistband or outside.
This here is set up for insidethe waistband uh with flips up
on the front and the back, oryou can remove them and you can
(06:11):
use the belt loops for uhoutside the waistband carry.
So uh again, this is a dualpurpose one, so it really works
uh well if you're playing aroundand looking for something to
kind of see what where you wantto carry and how you want to
carry.
SPEAKER_00 (06:32):
And and we have here
a kydex holster.
Um, a lot of people now aremoving into like they like the
kydex.
Uh they're very durable, verystrong.
Um just looking at thedifference between the kydex and
the leather.
Um, the kydex is gonna hold itsform very good.
It's whenever you use yourfirearm coming in and out of the
(06:56):
holster.
Um, it's gonna maintain its formgood.
It's easy to find to find, youknow, it maintains the form well
of the firearm.
A lot of people like the kydex.
I would say one of the cons tothe kydex is that it does tend
to scuff your firearm up.
Um, I mean, if you if you haveif it's your everyday carry gun,
(07:17):
you're probably not worriedabout that, and that's great.
Um, if you're using a heirloom, let's say uh gun you got passed
down to you from yourgrandfather or father or
something like that.
Maybe it's a collect or acollector gun.
Umdex is probably not gonna bethe best option because you're
(07:37):
probably not gonna want to scuffthat gun up.
Right.
But I'll let Mr.
Bryan explain a little bit moreon the kydex.
And here's a C and G holster.
SPEAKER_02 (07:44):
C and G holster.
Uh where we're also an affiliatewith them.
Uh it's American made.
Uh they actually have somecustom molded, and then they
also um have some what they callquick ships that are you know
for your basic standard firearmswithout any attachments.
This one is actually for a block43x, and it's actually cut out
(08:07):
for if you used a red dot uhsite, it's cut out for that as
well.
That's something else, too, ifyou're looking for a holster,
making sure that it's meets yourwhat your gun is carrying,
whether you've got uh one that'scapable for red dot, like with
these right here, these are juststandard holsters, so it's not
(08:31):
cut out for the red dot.
So uh you just need to payattention to that.
Uh, they make the holsters forif you have a light attachment
or laser attachment, they makethose holsters, but a lot of
times those are custom holsters.
Um you have to get thosespecialty made.
So um, yeah, the kydex is greatfor inside the waistband because
(08:56):
it uh keeps the uh void open towhere you can re-holster without
digging into your waistband anduh causing injury or an
accidental discharge.
You gonna say something, David?
SPEAKER_00 (09:12):
Uh oh no, I was just
gonna move on to the um other.
We also have a hybrid holster, acodecin leather.
Um I might let Mr.
Brian explain explain that.
SPEAKER_02 (09:26):
Yeah, this one uh is
outside the waistband and it's
got a cant to it.
Um that's something else too, depending on how you're
carrying.
A lot of times, if you'recarrying on the your side, you
want that forward cant whereit's easy to draw the pistol
instead of having to come highup, you're able to come forward
(09:47):
a little bit and not have to uhworry about coming up so high
underneath your armpit oranything for your carry.
Uh, this would also even workfor um your eight or four
o'clock carry position just uhoff your hip.
Um I it's what I carry with thisone sometimes.
If I'm not carrying it at thethree o'clock, I'm right-handed.
(10:09):
I'll carry it, use it at thefour o'clock position where it's
just a little bit behind.
Your body shape is also going todetermine your carry and
position and how you carry.
Um, some people love appendixcarry.
Um it's not one of my favoritecarry positions, but I
(10:30):
understand why people like it.
My particular body style, itmakes it a little bit difficult.
Uh, I could carry appendix, uh,would just probably have to get
a wedge or something to add tomy holster to keep it from
flopping out uh forward and uhprinting.
(10:50):
Uh that's something else.
When you're look, especially ifyou're doing inside the
waistband conceal carry, uh, youdon't want your gun to print or
people to be able to see thatyou're carrying a pistol.
Again, this one's a Versa carry,it's got a tension screw here
where you can tighten the andloosen the tension as needed for
your particular gun.
(11:12):
Um again, this one's more block43, but got the custom opening
where it's not going to collapseon you.
So uh great little holster, andthis one even with a red dot, uh
it's red dot accessible for theGlock 43.
Um another inside the waistbandis uh again another Versicary.
(11:37):
This is a a custom mold, or nota custom, but it's a uh hybrid.
You've got a padded back area onthe holster, which is leather
and foam, and then you've gotthe kydex outer shell, and then
the steel belt clip that holdsthe gun or holds the holster in
(11:59):
on the belt.
But this one is uh a dual, likeI said, it's kydex and leather.
Uh great.
Uh kydex helps keep that uhopening there where the gun will
go in and out very easily.
Uh, it's got a little clipwhenever you put your gun in,
you'll feel it snap in place andit holds it in place, and all
(12:20):
you do is just light twist andpull up and it releases it.
So um again, a Versicari, wecarry these and um another good
holster.
Uh, I really like the Versicariproducts.
Uh, I'm I'm a leather person.
Um I'm getting more accustomedto some kydex products, but um,
(12:44):
I've just always enjoyed the thefeel and the smell of the
leather.
Uh I old old timer here.
SPEAKER_00 (13:21):
And then and then
along with holsters, and and
these are very similar, so uh,we're not gonna spend a lot of
time on because the materialsare similar.
Spare mag copies, and you canget them in single, like this
one here, or double.
You can get them in leather oror the codex um or nylon.
Uh, I prefer codex.
This right here is uh it's somemolded plastic molded plastic um
(13:47):
by pit bull tactical, it'sactually expands.
So I'm using a double stack maghere.
It slides right in to expandout, but it also when I pull it
out, I can use it for singlestack, like a 1911 right mag.
So it's a multiple multiple magas well, it's just a single
carrier.
So all I gotta do is just slideit in there and it snaps on my
(14:07):
belt.
I can use it outside thewaistband or inside the
waistband.
Yep.
This is my go-to mag pouch righthere because whatever I'm
carrying, um, it takes, youknow, like I said, multiple mags
or multiple types of mags.
So whatever gun I'm carrying, Ican just slide the mag in there,
flip it on my belt, and I'mready to go.
Yep.
SPEAKER_02 (14:27):
And again, we we're
a dealer, we have uh these in
stock in our store.
Um, we've got them in the deserttan, the uh military green, and
black color.
So if you're looking for one ofthose, uh feel free to go to our
our website,blueberrytactical.com.
Uh, we've got the link forVersacary where you can order
(14:50):
directly through them throughour link.
Uh our end of company store, uh,we have these listed in there.
Uh, you can order those andeither arrange if you're local,
pick up here, or we can ship uhfor a small fee to ship it.
But uh, we do have these instock.
So another uh holster concern,or another another holster is a
(15:15):
paddle holster.
Uh, this one's a kydex.
Um you've got the where it willfit over the belt, you got these
little bridges right here whereit will keep the gun or the
holster on the belt and not pullout whenever you're trying to
draw the holster.
There are some issues somepeople have with the uh trigger
(15:38):
release.
Um I mean the the release forthe this particular holster,
this level one holster.
Some people don't like thislittle uh thing here uh because
whenever you draw your pistol, your finger, you have to keep it
on, you know, you can't let yourfinger drop down because as if
you're pulling it and yourfinger drops down, your finger
(16:00):
will end up right over the uhtrigger, open trigger guard
area.
And if you're not aware payinguh attention to it, your finger
could inadvertently go on to thetrigger, which could lead to a
negligent discharge.
But if you have good uh triggerdiscipline, finger discipline,
(16:22):
whenever you draw with thisholster, it's gonna come right
out on the slide.
I personally like these.
This is my uh only time I reallywear these are for class or for
range, uh, whenever because Idon't want to mess up my leather
gear, but uh this is a gooddurable holster for my training
at the range.
SPEAKER_00 (16:42):
Got anything, David?
Yes, Miss Brian.
Um, as we're talking aboutholsters here, and I'd like to
move before we get to off-bodycarry, talk about um you
mentioned this is a level oneholster, talk about some of the
safety concerns, some of thesafety features on some
holsters.
Um the safety of carrying in aproper holster, right?
(17:04):
Even you know, using good goodholsters.
Uh you know, there are manyholsters out there, and some are
one size fits all, and some ofthem are good, some of them are
um, I mean, and you know, they're all um all of them have
their purpose, but some arebetter than others for certain
purposes, right?
I guess is what I'm trying tosay.
(17:24):
Um, you could mention the levelone.
What are some of the differentlevels of the holsters?
And maybe, you know, in a levelone, and I know these are
multiple questions I would liketo have to flesh out a little
bit.
Um, in a level one, you know, this one has the trigger, the
trigger finger release for thefirearm, which which I have
several like that, and I and Ilike them.
(17:45):
They're they're good.
You just have, like you said, you have to be careful when
drawing, not to as that fingerpresses there, not to let it
press on into the trigger,right?
To the trigger guard, um, to thetrigger.
Yeah, um, but also I know somemake the thumb ones.
I've seen some where you comeunderneath and there's a little
thing underneath that allows youto pull right.
(18:07):
Um, but but what is thedifferent levels?
And we can talk about this otherstuff as we go.
SPEAKER_02 (18:12):
So, some of the
different levels, you start out
with uh level zero, which isbasically uh uh tension.
Uh that would be this righthere, this uh with the screw,
it's a tension screw.
You tighten it down.
Uh, and I actually can this whenI carry my 43x and have it in
there, I can actually turn itupside down and shake it.
(18:35):
If I violently shook it, thenyeah, the gun could come flying
out.
But if there's enough tensionthat it's not gonna fly out if I
was to fall down or something, but it's not so tight in there
that it hampers me if I neededto draw.
It's I can still smoothly drawthe weapon.
Um, you've got like this oneright here.
(18:55):
This is a uh again a level zerouh tension.
It uses the gun fits in there, and as you tighten your belt,
it'll uh tighten down on thegun, and it's just the tension
of the belt against your bodytightens and secures the gun.
(19:16):
Not if you're uh active, uhdoing a lot of running or stuff,
you may not want to you may wantto opt for something that has a
tension screw or either a levelone, which as David's mentioned,
you got your thumb brakes, yougot uh the little slide lever
here, and other options or othertypes of level one holsters.
(19:41):
Uh it basically it just meansyou got to perform one release
to get the weapon to draw.
The typical law enforcementholster uh back when I was in is
a level three.
It took three different uhreleases to get the gun out of
the holster.
Um, I think now they even have alevel four holster, I believe.
SPEAKER_00 (20:02):
I I they they very
well may.
I know they're coming out withnew stuff every day.
I know for and I'll say this, Ithink for um everyday carry, I
think I wouldn't want to carryanything more than a level one
level one.
Um and I don't mind the levelzeros, it just depends on how
I'm carrying.
Uh uh if I'm carrying oh if I'mopen carrying for some reason,
(20:26):
then I like to have uh have alevel one for retention
purposes.
Uh you know, but and and that'snot all the time, but but a lot
of times.
If I'm carrying concealed, youknow, a level level zero with
with with attention may be okay, you know, if they're outside the
pants or something like that.
I mean it just depends.
It it just depends, and it'ssomething that I think you know
(20:48):
you've got to find what worksbest for you, what's the most
comfortable for you.
I mean, none of this is uh oneis uh one size fits all.
Um you know, there's a lot ofprudence, discretion, and and
individual opinion, I guess, that that goes into how we
carry.
And and even for me, I I carrydifferent ways at different
(21:10):
times, you know, depending onclothing style I'm wearing,
where I'm going, uh the weather, the climate.
I mean, there's a lot of thingsto take into into account with
this.
Um once again, just make sureyou're carrying it safely.
And then I can't stress outenough.
Um, if you carry, you know, andpractice the way you're
(21:32):
carrying.
So if you're carrying the levelone with the trigger, practice
carrying that so you're not umstart over.
You know, as you're drawing, asyou're coming out after you
press the release, that finger'snot slipping into the trigger
well.
Um, just make sure you practicewith with the way you carry.
And also so that way you can besmooth and proficient um drawing
(21:57):
your drawing your weapon and youknow, slow is smooth and smooth
as fast.
And you want to be as smooth aspossible.
SPEAKER_02 (22:04):
That's what well,
something that and I teach in my
concealed carry classes, I makea point to tell people is
whenever you are looking to findyour your carry position, once
you determine this is where Ilike to carry, this is where I'm
gonna start carrying, practice, make sure your firearm is clear,
(22:25):
uh, it's unloaded, there'snothing in the chamber, and you
know, put your gun in theholster, and then just ten times
every day, slowly reach for yourgun, pull it out, present the
gun on target, and then go backto the holster.
What you're looking to try to dois to not look down at your
(22:46):
holster, either coming out or orgoing back in.
You want to keep your eyesfocused on what you perceive as
a threat because if you takeyour eyes off of that threat and
they see it, they may be able toreact and attack you before you
realize they have moved.
So start doing 10 times a day apractice draw, cut slowly coming
(23:08):
out.
Uh, each time you come out, worka little bit faster and
re-holster faster.
It'll build what we call thatmuscle memory that uh you build
up to where you instinctively dosomething without even having to
think about it.
Your brain says, draw a weapon, you're not standing there.
Okay, I need to pull or clear mygarment, grab the pistol, and it
(23:32):
it becomes second nature to you.
So just uh again on that note,uh practice how you're gonna
carry and practice uh drawingand re-holstering that that
weapon.
SPEAKER_00 (23:45):
Now I think we can
move on to off-body carry.
Yeah.
Um Mr.
Brian, if you want to explainoff-body carry uh and show some
of the products that we have.
SPEAKER_02 (23:57):
Um Okay.
Um yeah, this here is uh forladies, uh, they make the
standard purses, they makecross-draw purses or cross-body
purses.
Uh these are designed to whereyou can carry, you've got your
pockets for your everyday stuffthat you put in.
(24:17):
But depending on your left orright-handed, this one's
amphidextrious.
Uh, you got access on bothsides.
But if you ever need to drawyour pistol, you just pull the
zipper down, reach in, and ifyou look inside, you'll see a
holster in there.
You your gun fits in thatholster and it secures it where
(24:40):
it's not flopping around inthere and anything getting into
that uh trigger area.
So whenever you're carrying it,all you've got to do is reach
in, pull it out, and presentyour your um weapon on your your
thread.
And then it also just discreetlykeeps it in there where it's not
in your main parts of your yourpurse where you're digging in
(25:04):
for change keys, uh wallet orsomething, and inadvertently
putting your finger on a triggerof a gun that's just playing
around in there.
Um really recommend finding apurse that or crossbody uh purse
that uh you really like, uhdifferent styles, colors.
Uh just find what you like andmake sure it just securely uh
(25:29):
holsters your gun as well as uhyou're able to get it and it
works with your your lifestyle.
Don't ever just put a gun insidethe bag and just throw it in
there because that could be adisaster if uh something got
into the trigger area.
So that's uh different styles,uh different websites.
(25:54):
Uh I've I could list severalhere, but uh if you have any
questions on uh purses for theoff-body carry for the ladies,
um let us know.
I can recommend a few that uhI've seen that I like their
quality and stuff, and hook youup with that.
SPEAKER_00 (26:12):
And other off-body
carry options.
Um you have your backpack, youhave holsters in the backpack.
Um you have banking packholsters and we actually, yeah,
we've got one right here.
SPEAKER_02 (26:29):
A lot of people back
in my time in the 80s when I was
in law enforcement.
Uh, this was the the new niche.
Uh people really like doingcarrying these.
Uh you can uh go jogging, nothave to worry about uh putting
uh outside or inside thewaistband holster.
(26:51):
Just put your gun in the holsterin here, zip it up, and go what
do whatever.
You got air extra pockets andstuff or first aid kit, keys,
wallet, uh whatever.
This particular one, uh, youactually got a magazine uh
holder right here, so to attacha holster over here to put your
(27:12):
gun in and zip it up, and thenyou've got it accessible
whenever you could wear it whereit's in the front on the side,
or you could spin it around inthe back.
I wouldn't spin it around in theback unless it's just gonna be
for a short time because youdon't want you're not able you
don't have eyes in the back ofyour head, so you can't see
(27:33):
somebody coming up, but it's agood alternative body uh carry
for when you don't have a um abelt or you're wearing gym
shorts or something, you canstill be uh safely armed and it
works real good for certainaspects, especially for the hot
weather when you're wearingshorts and you don't want to
(27:57):
carry a t-shirt, or you know, soit's a little bit harder to
carry concealed whenever you'rewearing light or not a lot of
clothing.
So it just makes a good off-bodycarry option.
They make uh briefcases, umvehicles, they're several
different things you can do forum holsters and vehicles or gun
(28:21):
securement.
So um just uh look through, findsomething that's quality made,
durable, and that uh is not justsome knockoff or cheaply made.
Uh make sure you look at thereviews, ask around your friends
for recommendations, uh, yourlocal gun store, your local
firearms trainer, uh, even lawenforcement can sometimes go
(28:45):
recommend what works for them.
SPEAKER_00 (28:47):
So uh anything else,
David?
And um make sure it'scomfortable.
Um, you know, and that's alwaysnot always that's not always
easy to do, and as you're buyingand looking, you know, because
you can only tell so much aboutthat from reviews or or other
things, but as you use it, youknow, and it may take you
several times, don't getdiscouraged if you if you get
(29:07):
something and after wearing itfor a week or two, you realize,
hey, this is uncomfortable.
This isn't don't let itdiscourage you from not carrying
or wearing a firearm.
First off, if you do choose toconceal carry, um, it's not
comfortable, and it never you'renot gonna find the perfect
comfortable setup.
I haven't yet, and I'm sure Mr.
(29:28):
Brian can probably say that hehasn't yet either, and and
probably anybody else he talkedto, but there are some that are
more comfortable than others.
A lot of it depends on you, andit's gonna take a little time to
find what works for you, andthen you're gonna probably find,
as I have, that there areseveral different ways that work
for you.
Yeah, um, some topics that wedidn't cover or that we didn't
look at yet, but I wanna umbecause these aren't ways that I
(29:51):
know that I carry, you know, oftentimes, and Mr.
Brian probably the same way, butthese are some options that are
out there that you could lookinto.
And if Mr.
Brian wants to, you know, hasanything he would like to say on
these, then then that would befine.
But ankle carry is anotheroption.
A lot of people like to anklecarry.
I I have an ankle holster, Ipersonally don't ankle carry
(30:12):
that often, but it is an optionthat I have in my toolbox.
Um, you have thigh holsters, youknow, like inside the thigh.
Um that's an option.
You have leg drop holsters, youknow, although I would say that
leg drop are probably not thebest for control.
Sealed carry most definitely, and probably not for everyday
(30:33):
carry, um, unless you're in themilitary or law enforcement,
yeah.
But uh they're great for rangeor training.
Um, it's an option that you haveout there, it's something you
have also you have uh cross drawcross draw holsters that that
fit over your shoulders.
