Every mindful man eventually faces this question: how do we navigate our relationship with sexuality in a world saturated with pornographic imagery?
If you want to feel masterful with your sexual impulses and desires, porn is a universe, a likely addiction, with which you must grapple.
There's no getting away from it. It's archetypal:
Turns out both Zan and I found a trolley-stash of adult magazines in the woods where we lived as kids. Imagine: eleven years old, that first look. The beauty of women… in all its naked forms!
Perhaps you still feel the original delight of it to this day. That sense of discovery and awe!
But as the years pass, our relationship to porn typically darkens. And most men, desiring a more conscious path through life, realize they must leave the images, the videos, behind.
In fact the consensus in good men’s work today is that pornography is wholly negative—a work of the devil!—and that we must rid ourselves of such habits as quick as we can. But within this blanket judgment, is there a soul of porn, a pearl, a gift, that might get left behind?
A trace of that original mischief? A key to our libido and vitality?
Anti-venom for our sexual shame?
Before throwing out the baby with the bathwater, Zan and I explore some nuanced views about porn—including what we’ve discovered about reclaiming the erotic imagination beyond the screen.
