The next topic for June will bethe heart chakra and there'll
(01:12):

collaboration between me and adear friend of mine.
We'll discuss the heart chakrain detail and then July's
meeting is to be determined.
So check your show notes if youwant to join live or if you
want a copy of the recording.
This will be a great meeting, agreat takeaway Even if you're
(01:34):
not dealing with any mentalhealth issues, you can help
those that you love.
May is Mental Health andWellness Awareness Month, so
it's a great chance for us totalk about what is mental health
, what is mental wellness?
What do we do to maintain ourmental health and wellness?
(01:56):
It's also a great time for usto have a look at how our mental
landscape affects our physicalbody and that really they are
one in the same.
So throughout this month we'vebeen discussing anxiety, major
depressive disorder, bipolardisorder.
In the last podcast, wereviewed a functional medicine
(02:20):
approach to dealing with thesediseases.
That included looking at yournutrition and your relationships
, and stress management, sleep.
But for this one, I wanted tocover how the energy medicine
technique, reiki, can help withmaintaining mental health, and
during the live meeting we'llactually practice some of these
(02:43):
techniques.
You may be familiar with Reiki, but if you're not, reiki is a
healing technique thatoriginates from Japan.
It's over a hundred years oldand it was discovered by the
first Reiki master after hespent several weeks in high
(03:03):
meditation and fasting in whichhe was channeled this form of
energy healing.
The basis of Reiki healing isthat it's not actually new.
It's just been rediscovered andthe practice of Reiki is in a
format that those of us here onearth can easily learn, become
(03:24):
attuned to and can use in ourdaily lives.
The important thing to knowabout Reiki is it is channeling
energy from a source that weconsider higher, a healing
intention, so that it can't doany harm and it can be used on
people.
It can be used on pets.
It can be used on pets.
It can be used on objects.
(03:47):
Reiki can also be used onevents.
It can be sent into the futureor into the past.
Reiki can be sent to otherlocations, but the main idea
with Reiki is you set a healingintention or intention to help
or improve or aid in some way,and then you channel energy.
So, even if you're not a Reikihealer, you can actually do that
(04:09):
.
You don't really have to becertified in Reiki.
However, I do plug thatbecoming a Reiki practitioner is
therapeutic and it's a toolthat you can use on yourself
simply and have your own healingsanctuary at home.
So I'll make sure I includedthe show notes, my online course
(04:31):
, become Reiki One certified.
And while we're discussing it,I would like to start offering
live Reiki classes and theavailable formats can be in
person, if you're local, or byZoom.
So I'm going to put a sign upsheet if you would be interested
in learning about either one ofthose doing a live course this
(04:51):
summer for Reiki one Reiki, rather, if it's going to a Reiki
practitioner and having aformal session, or Reiki in
(05:12):
which you are treating yourselfif you are in the process of
learning.
Reiki is beneficial for anxiety, just naturally, because for one
, when you are in the state ofReiki and transmitting Reiki,
(05:33):
you're automatically in a stateof mindfulness.
Your mind and brain willautomatically begin to slow down
, and the nature of Reiki isthat letting go of worry
thoughts is simple.
It comes very easy.
According to the InternationalAssociation of Reiki
Professionals, reiki can helpgeneralized anxiety by lowering
stress levels, by promotingrelaxations, because for those
(05:54):
that are living with anxiety, alot of times it's being fueled
by not having the time or thespace to relax or simply not
being able to engage in anythingthat's relaxing.
Reiki can help by improving theoverall mood.
So when you're having a livingwith anxiety, if your mood's
(06:15):
being worsened by just anynumber of events, that will
worsen your anxiety, and then,of course, improving sleep,
because individuals living withanxiety often have poor sleep
quality and I'll put a link inthe show notes.
The authors have posted someevidence-based research about
how Reiki which, when it'sstudied, can be one of the more
(06:39):
difficult healing modalities ofstudy In evidence-based medicine
you often need some kind ofblinding, so you need to have a
group of people that are justalike One get the treatment, one
don't, but they shouldn't knowit and then you have something
you can track to see how theyimprove.
So that can be difficult to doin a healing modality like Reiki
(07:01):
, but they have pulled a fewresearch articles concerning
Reiki's and its scientificbenefits.
As far as anxiety, there is apublished article in the journal
(07:21):
Pain Management Nursing, whichyou'll find a link in your show
notes that gives an overview.
The researchers did a type ofstudy in which they reviewed
several clinical trials andpulled the data together.
So that helps, because Imentioned that Reiki was
beneficial with pain and anxietyand it does appear that these
(07:53):
nurses saw improvement clinicalimprovement in pain and anxiety
in adults that were undergoingbreast biopsy, as well as in
adults living in the communityliving with chronic pain.
And when it comes to somethinglike Reiki, because it's low
(08:14):
risk, it's definitely worthtrying.
For anxiety.
Really, your biggest risk, I'lltell my clients, is you may
fall asleep during the session, but if you had anxiety you
probably need to sleep anyway.
There was another study inwhich the authors looked at
(08:35):
comparative data to see if Reikiwas beneficial for depression,
anxiety, and this article isreally nice because it gives us
a fair and balanced conclusion, which is that the authors here
did not necessarily find thatReiki was beneficial, but they
didn't find that it was harmful.
(08:56):
So these authors I think we'relooking at individuals suffering
from cancer, but the authorsare open to disclosing that the
data was hard to gather.
They had to rely just onstories and anecdotal
information.
So, in terms of knowing if itwas beneficial, this study tells
us that maybe so, maybe not,but I think the conclusion we
(09:19):
can take is that if you'rewanting to work with your
anxiety, naturally trying Reikiat least once won't hurt.
Spending some time and devotingyourself to learning Reiki on a
regular basis could indeed help.
When I'm working with my ownclients that are dealing with
anxiety, the biggest benefitthat comes is the time they get
(09:44):
to relax, and when we're in aReiki session, that's a sacred
space where we really block outthe world so that allows them to
go deep within themselves.
And what I found is reallyhelping recently with clients is
that I described to them theenergy shifts and blockages.
(10:04):
I go ahead and just tell themduring the session and the
realization I'm seeing is reallymoving them forward as far as
releasing what they've beenhanging on to.
And, depending on where you arein your life, that may not be
lecture you have, especially ifyou've been very busy or
overwhelmed.
Having a moment or two just tofocus on yourself and realizing
(10:27):
what's happening in your body ona physical level, on a
spiritual level, on an energeticlevel, can be really beneficial
.
Major depressive disorder ischaracterized for many people
living with it, with an elementof severe fatigue and what's
(10:50):
called apathy, lack of feeling,emotions.
Also can go with this are thephysical symptoms, such as pain
that can't be alleviated withmost treatments and just an
overall feeling of unwellnessmost treatments and just an
overall feeling of unwellness.
Reiki can help with mostelements of depression.
Doing some research on it, it'ssimilar data.
(11:11):
As far as Reiki can be helpfulwhen it's studied in a clinical
setting, there are some studiesthat show that it's helpful,
some studies that show that itwasn't necessarily harmful when
I'm dealing with someone who, apatient who has depression.
Reiki can absolutely be helpfulIn those individuals.
One thing I might bring up isconsidering more than one
(11:36):
session because of the nature ofdepression and the energy
stagnation that goes with it.
Getting repeated sessions canbe beneficial Also for those
people.
Sometimes I'll recommend ashorter sessions that they don't
necessarily need to do the fullhour and a half session.
They may benefit from a 15 or30 minute session, and the
(12:01):
reason why I will recommend thatjust from what I've noticed
working with my own clients, isthat when you're living with
depression, the stagnation thatcan come with it brings a
physical heaviness and sometimes, when it's released, there's a
detox that goes with it in orderto help that healing process
along, not to do it sodramatically.
(12:23):
So shorter sessions, maybedoing them a little bit more
frequently.
The International Association ofReiki Professionals do cite
several articles that show Reikiis beneficial and of course,
the risk with patients andsimilar to anxiety, is that you
just may be very tired during orafterward, although clients
(12:45):
seem to feel an uplift in theirenergy after a Reiki session,
and then the risk of it simplymay not work for you.
The caveat with that is thatsometimes when you think it
doesn't work, it's just youdon't feel the effect.
But I've had clients come backeven a few weeks afterward and
tell me that in fact they didnotice something.
(13:07):
It just wasn't right away.
It gets mysterious andsometimes it's best not to get
too much into.
Oh, did that work?
Did it not work?
What I encourage people is thatwhen you seek something like
Reiki, you should be proud ofyourself that you took a
proactive step to heal yourself.
You did something.
You're doing something good.
If nothing else, you should beproud of yourself for taking the
(13:29):
effort.
And when you're living withdepression, that's huge.
People with major depressivedisorder often don't have energy
or the drive to pursue thingsin terms of their healing, to
pursue things in terms of theirhealing.
Don't forget, if you'reinterested in hearing more about
(13:53):
this or want to meet up liveand you want to meet me and meet
the Art of Healing podcastcommunity and your show notes,
join us May 25th at noon, central Standard Time.
Central standard time.
Beyond the diagnostic parts ofmental health, there's an aspect
(14:15):
of mental health that we canthink about improving or
augmenting or adding to.
So when we think of mentalhealth we want to think of, like
our clarity, our focus, eventhings like our intuition, even
things like if we have empathicabilities, if we want to develop
those.
So something like a tool likeEnergy Medicine.
(14:37):
Reiki is a fantastic way that,if you're actually in a good
place but you're curious andwant to take yourself a little
further, this is a great startertool is Reiki.
One of the things that manyfolks are seeking is to improve
their intuition or to strengthentheir third eye.
That's a great place is working.
(14:59):
With Reiki you can improve yourclarity, improve your focus, you
can calm your mind and it's apowerful way to improve your
intuition.
When you practice Reiki, you'repracticing using a healing
intention.
You can also do that withcompassion.
(15:22):
So practicing self-compassionis a great way and then, when
you've done that enough, extending your compassion to
others.
That's similar to a meditationtechnique that's studied quite a
bit, the Metta meditationtechnique, in which you extend
feelings of goodwill andcompassion from yourself to
(15:44):
others and in a way that's justlike Reiki, where you're
channeling good healing energy.
That is a fantastic way, notonly to help yourself but to
help others and to take yourselfbeyond where you are now.
So if you're in a good placebut you're wanting to figure out
how to help others, but you'renot sure how to.
(16:05):
Sometimes doing a metameditation or compassion
meditation can guide you on whatyou could do to help others.
If you feel you took away a fewtips for how Reiki can help with
(16:25):
mental health, don't forgetthat if you want to connect live
