Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Art of Healing podcast.
This is Dr Charlize, andtoday's podcast is how to test
your hormones at home.
I am going to be sharing withyou a revolutionary tool that I
don't even want to categorize asfunctional medicine or
traditional medicine.
This is a women's health toolthat's incredibly empowering and

(00:27):
I'm going to be teaching youabout that today in the podcast.
So, for women, there are timesin your life, more often than
not, where you're going toquestion if what you're
experiencing changes in yourbody for the good or the not so
good are attributed to thechanges your body is going

(00:52):
through.
And really, as women well, mentoo, but as women we are heavily
influenced by what our hormonesare doing, what our ovaries are
doing, by what our hormones aredoing, what our ovaries are
doing, what our pituitary glandis doing at any time.
But if you're experiencingthings such as fatigue, weight

(01:12):
changes, mood swings, troublesleeping, temperature
fluctuations, beinguncomfortably hot, hot flashes,
is hormonal testing right foryou?
Potentially, yes.
Another time in a woman's lifewhere hormonal testing can
really help is if you arewanting to start or grow your

(01:35):
family.
So there are things that youcan look for in your body
without any indicators ortesting.
But this tool that I'm going toteach you about today really
and truly can help and I promiseit is so easy to use in the
comfort of your home that, ifyou are planning for growing

(01:56):
your family or starting a family, this tool really is an
investment that I would highlyrecommend you use, investment
that I would highly recommendyou use, in particular, if you
are working with a fertilityspecialist.
This tool, mira, could reallyhelp For the rest of us.
Monitoring your hormone changesmay help you make decisions

(02:18):
about your future, especially ifyou sense it might be time for
perimenopause or you'requestioning if you're time for
perimenopause, or you'requestioning if you're going
through perimenopause, or you'requite sure you've gone through
menopause and you've made sureto do a home pregnancy test and
it's negative.
There's other things that youcan do to track what your body's

(02:40):
doing that can really answerthe question about where you are
and what decisions you may needto make for your future.
So fatigue, weight changes, moodswings, disturbed sleep, and
the key is that for women, we'retaught in medicine that we

(03:05):
start to look or questionwomen's hormonal status at
certain key times in their life.
Puberty as long as we see achild going through puberty
naturally really don't intervene, because we know what changes
to expect During the years ofchildbearing, when you're able
to have children.
For the most part we think weknow what we can anticipate.

(03:26):
But for many women it does notgo that way.
It is not going as predicted.
They are not having periods, they are having unpredictable
periods.
How can we help those womenespecially?
Just not just birth control andjust doing hormones just to
suppress the symptoms?
And then, of course, for womenthat are noticing periods that

(03:47):
had previously been normal butmaybe they're not so normal and
they're wondering what is goingon, that can be kind of
difficult because they might seetheir doctor and get a snapshot
in time with one hormone testthat may tell them one thing but
it doesn't really explain whatthey're experiencing Right.

(04:08):
So hormone testing is somethingyou can do at home and a lot of
people don't realize that.
For women you've actually donequite a bit of hormonal testing
at home.
So the hormone testing youmight do at your doctor's office
.
You go in, you get your labsdrawn, you wait to get your
results and then that result isgoing to be a snapshot in time.

(04:29):
Traditional lab testing may bea part of your medical care.
It may be something you have todo without any choice, but it
also could be that maybe analternative would work for you,
especially for women.
If you're going through hormonechanges, you really need more
than one test, like testing forone month just that one period
of time is probably not going toanswer your questions.

(04:51):
Month, just that one period oftime, is probably not going to
answer your questions.
And also the cost, because alot of those in lab tests can be
expensive and some of the onesthat you may want especially
trying to answer questions likeam I in perimenopause or am I in
menopause they may or may notbe covered by your insurance.
We've been doing home hormonetesting in the form of pregnancy

(05:12):
tests.
Those kits are availableeverywhere.
Ovulation kits those are justbasically an in-home hormone
test, so we've had those foryears.
But what I'll be teaching abouttoday can combine all of those
into one amazing and in yourhome lab and with this testing

(05:33):
kit, you can do it when you seefit.
It's integrated with a cellphone app that's extremely
intelligent, that's going toguide you on when you should
test, and it's so sleek thatit'll even tell you if it's
starting to sense changes, if itwould recommend you do
additional testing during aperiod of time, if you're

(05:53):
monitoring for ovulation or ifyou're monitoring for changes in
what's called FSH, if you aredeveloping menopausal symptoms.
And with this kit you pay foryour kit to start and supplies
to need, but every time you'retesting you're not paying for it
.
You already have all thesupplies you need.
The chart I'm showing here andfor podcast listeners I will put

(06:35):
a link in the handouts thatinclude this chart is just
further comparison of if youwere wanting to do extensive
hormone testing in a lab, whichis going to be the snapshot in
time.
It doesn't really give you alot of guidance about what's
happening, versus havingsomething you could do at home
where you could test on a dailybasis and really make decisions
in real time whether it's tryingto get pregnant or if you need
to start hormone replacementtherapy because you're in
menopause.
So I am introducing Mira.

(06:56):
Mira is an in-home hormonaltesting that allows you to test
from the comfort of your homewith the Mira.
With the device and the testingstrips that go with it, you can
track your fertility, becausethe Mira tracks certain key

(07:18):
hormones on a daily or sometimesmultiple times a day to tell
you if it looks like you'reabout to ovulate or if you have
ovulated or you have ananovulatory cycle.
That's a cycle you did notovulate.
People with PCOS frequentlyexperience those and then Mira
also allows you to track yoursymptoms.

(07:40):
Along with this, and combiningthese tools together, it's
extremely powerful.
The testing is very simple athome, so it's very similar to
conducting a pregnancy test inyour home.
So it comes with an easy to usecup that will collect your

(08:00):
urine and you can reuse it.
So that's nice because youdon't generate more trash with
it or the testing kit.
It guides you through how totest and the app actually will
coach you the whole way on howlong to dip the strip into the
urine and then how to put itinside of the mirror testing
device, and then the device willgenerate a result for you that

(08:25):
gives you a number, and at first, when you start tracking, it
doesn't make a lot of sense.
But the mirror is going to takethat powerful information that
it gathers over several days andit's going to give you some
pretty insightful and powerfulresults, and it really starts to
give you insight within a fewdays of tracking.
So I had the opportunity to usethe mirror for myself.

(08:48):
So for me personally, themirror was guidance.
As far as you know, am Iapproaching menopause?
Am I perimenopausal?
What are the next steps?
And it was simple as thesethree steps.
So the first step was youcollect your urine and you hold
the testing strip in the urinefor 20 seconds, easy enough.

(09:09):
So, just like if you did apregnancy test at home or an
ovulation kit at home, then thewand that you test with will you
recap it and you insert it intothe mirror device.
The device is handheld and whenI first saw it I had doubts it
could be as powerful as it was, because it was so small and so
convenient.

(09:29):
And it comes in the cutestlittle carrying case.
So if you had to travel with ityou could easily take this with
you.
So the device itself, itrecharges, so you plug the
device in.
It's very intelligent.
So once a wand goes in themirror, after it's collected
some info about you in theplatform, in the app, collected

(09:54):
some info about you in theplatform, in the app, it knows
what to do.
It talks to the cell phone appthat you have already downloaded
and it gives you instructionsabout what's going to happen
next, the little surprises whenI start using the device.
I love that.
You know I did my test.
I put the wand in and the firsttime I did it, it told me to go
do some yoga.
While I was waiting for myresults, I thought you know what
?
I'll go do some yoga.
I've got 20 minutes.

(10:14):
I love that.
It gave me some little wellnessto do and I think it gives you
other wellness tips for the 20minutes.
Then, at the end of it, itstarts hormone mapping.
It's using the mirror app andit starts mapping your hormones.
Now, for patients, this couldlook a little bit intimidating,
but the thing with this mirrorapp is that you're not alone.

(10:36):
It's backed up by gynecologists.
It's giving you a lot ofguidance, so you won't need to
interpret the numbers.
Once the app collects the datathat it needs, it will tell you
what's happening, and there'ssupport by board certified
gynecologists behind it.
So if you are interested inlearning about the mirror, I

(11:00):
will give you some links whereyou can start learning about it.
Guess what?
You do not have to work with mepersonally.
You can actually sign up to getyour own, but we'll get into
that in a little bit, so I'dlike to offer a few quick
hormone health tips.
So if you were thinking aboutdoing the mirror, you're more
curious things you can do todayto improve wherever you are as

(11:22):
far as your hormone balance, managing your stress.
So meditating for 10 minutes aday, aiming for better quality
sleep.
One thing we want to make sureis that the room's not too warm.
Our devices I know for patientsthat's a big culprit is the TVs
and the phones and everything.
So maybe try one night whereyou don't have them.

(11:43):
On Making sure your nutrition, your food supplies, what your
body is asking for with eachmeal Always a good thing and
some kind of healthy movement.
And for women going throughhormone changes, it may not feel
like a gym day, but maybe anice walk in nature or maybe

(12:04):
yoga, like my mirror deviceinstructed me to do, or maybe
just even some qigong orsomething like that, but some
regular movement throughout yourday.
So your next steps if you areat a place where you are feeling

(12:26):
like having a tool to empoweryou is what you need.
If you need this right away, ifyou're in the process of trying
to start a family and you wantall the help that you can get, I
will provide the link where youcan sign up, get your copy and
then the nice thing, when you'regetting it through me, you're
actually getting a discount, alittle bit of a discount.

(12:49):
I didn't want to influence youtoo much, but there's a discount
.
Work, you know, working throughme, you can definitely ask me
questions If you are curiousabout this device, if you need
more guidance, you can email me.
If you're listening on thepodcast, you probably can see
ways you can find me on socialmedia.
However, mira, the company hasalready got doctors that are

(13:11):
certified and are supportingpatients everywhere.
So, although I'm a physician, you don't need me to get started
.
You can actually get startedwith your device right away.
So DM me or email me if youhave questions, and then the
resources I'm providing fromtoday, I will provide a way that
you can get started.

(13:32):
I am accepting patients in myfunctional medicine practice and
if you're wanting a consult toactually get started on this,
I'll provide that info.
I am accepting patients only incertain states because we have
to work where we're licensed, sothat's you know it's a little
bit different, but otherwise I'mavailable, email consult if you
need, or you can get startedright away.

(13:54):
So thank you so much forjoining me for today's episode.
We'll be getting back togethersoon.
I wish you luck, wherever youare on your hormonal journey.
Thanks,
