This week was all about trying new things in gentle ways. One of us stretched into bigger watercolor washes; the other downsized into tiny oval paintings sized for a vintage inkwell—proof that creativity grows at any scale. We daydream seasonal swaps, share how studies of favorite artists remove the stakes, and sketch summer plans that include our kids. There’s also a love letter to embroidery as soothing, tactile art. Verdict: Week 14 felt good—playful, doable, and momentum-building.

Thank you so much for listening.

Did you create?
I did.
I did a painting.
Nice.

(01:06):
So did I.
I did two little mini paintings.
Oh, fun.
So I found this antique inkwellat an antique shop with my mom
and it's amazing.
It's so pretty.
And so there's a removablepicture you take out of it.
And I was like, well, I have topaint a painting.

(01:27):
Clearly, it was meant to be.
It was meant to be.
Yes, my soul claimed it.
I was like, this is coming homewith me and I'm painting,
painting.
So I, yeah, I cut up some paperand I had like three, three, the
paper cut just right so that Ihad three little mini pages, you
know, for oh like it fit it fitthree yeah I don't even know how

(01:49):
to say that the paper was bigenough to fit three ovals ovals
yeah to the frame okay gotchaanyways and so yeah I was like
I'm just gonna play with it I'mgonna see just gonna see what
comes out of my brain and whatcomes out onto the page and see
what I like best so yeah I madetwo and I'm working on the third

(02:12):
one that's so fun yeah I can'twait to see I mean I've seen the
first two I can't wait to seethe third one you come up with I
still think you should do allthe different seasons yeah I
know that's a good idea thatwould be really fun to do yeah
something for each season andjust like swap it out yeah
that's a good idea maybe I willI'm having a lot of fun with it

(02:34):
so I might just keep going youknow cut up more pieces of paper
yeah of my pastel board and yeahI love it go for it I love it so
much yeah I've been creating somany springtime things and like
it's springtime right now whilewe're recording this it is
springtime but then I madesomething really moody and more
fall themed this week which waskind of fun that's fun tell me

(02:59):
more yeah well I actually uh soI haven't painted like the
background of the illustrationsthat I've been doing I've just
been focusing on like the spotillustrations just the center
thing and that's it's beenreally fun I've really been
enjoying it but then I had tolike okay time to get brave and

(03:19):
to try the scary thing of makingthe watercolor listen to me for
a much larger surface area andit was scary but I did it yay
way to go thank you thank you Idon't have any like deep
emotional things that I reallyovercame this week though like
yeah I don't know nothing reallyto share that way I just I did

(03:41):
the scary background paintingnice no that's good trying
something new that you haven'treally done before, that's fun.
Yeah.
That's fun.
I think that we both kind of didthat.
You know, I tried something newwith the inkwell sizes.
That was a very different sizeand shape because it's a little
oval shape that I haven'tpainted before.

(04:03):
And yeah, so.
I love that you just leaned intowhat excited you though.
And it almost freed up space toget creative and to have fun,
which I love.
Yeah, there was like no, Thankyou so much.

(04:46):
yeah I'm excited to keep goingbecause I like the ones that
I've done but I'm yeah it's kindof like well let's see if I keep
going then I'll be like oh thisis the one you know you have so
many cool like vintage frames itmight be fun to like do more

(05:06):
paintings like here's a frameand what would look fun in here
yeah I've been thinking it wouldbe fun to do some studies of
like impressionist artists toojust to kind of you know
practice and play with it andlike play with the color and and
yeah anyway so I might try thattoo I might start I might join

(05:28):
you that sounds really fun Iknow it is and then it's also
less pressure like low pressureyou know I'm not starting from
scratch I just am playing andpracticing and yeah that's all
it has to be you know and that'sreally fun too going into summer
because we're gonna have ourkids home and That's something
they could easily join in on.
Yeah, totally.

(05:49):
It's a good summer activity.
Yeah.
And then we can teach them alittle art history because they
would definitely love that andnot be bored at all.
Right.
Yeah.
Small bets.
Maybe they could take it.
I want to learn.
Please try it.
I want to learn about the arthistory because I think it's
interesting.
I love it.

(06:09):
I love it.
Yeah.
Okay.
We'll talk about it.
Okay.
Well, yeah.
Total art history nerds overhere.
I took art history in collegeand it was one of my favorite
classes.
Me too.
I loved it.
Me too.
Everyone was like, ooh, arthistory is so horrible.
It's so bad.
It's so boring.
I took it and I was like, I lovethis.

(06:29):
This is so fun.
It's the best.
It's so interesting.
And I only took one.
I only took the first one.
I didn't even get into therenaissance of really cool
stuff.
I took probably what even morepeople considered the even more
boring art history class.
Oh man.
But I loved it.
Yeah.
So we have an art museum near usand maybe that's how we'll start

(06:52):
our art history lessons with ourchildren is we go to the art
museum and then point out, youknow, that could be fun if we
could go like going to the artmuseum, taking a picture that's
actually there that we see inperson and then say, okay, let's
try and recreate this.
That might get them moreengaged.
Yeah.

(07:12):
I love that idea.
Because they actually saw it inperson.
you know like anyways we alsohave an embroidery exhibit right
now that I'm dying to go see Iknow it's amazing I've seen it
and I yeah we have to go we dowe have to go okay new summer
plans I love this this is greatand yeah I mean it's worth a

(07:33):
look into that like embroiderypainting because it's amazing if
you've never looked into itbefore or seen anything about
that it is so cool so just alittle tidbit recommendation 10
out of 10 loved it yeah ifyou're wanting textile art
something that's fun andbeautiful and um good for mental

(07:58):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
