When you desire to gaze at an image, or when an emotion wells up in you as you encounter art, cinema, architecture, or even nature, you are experiencing God’s attempt to get your attention. God wants to “speak” to you through the visual image before you. The act of prayerful gazing, or visio divina, is one way we can respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit working in us to pay attention to our inner lives. The image becomes a means for us to encounter God and to learn about ourselves.
