Carissa Andrews (00:05):
Welcome to the
Author Revolution Podcast.
I'm Carissa Andrews, author andyour host here to help indie
authors like you master mindset, harness manifestation and
embrace cutting edge innovationto elevate your career.
Let's dive in.
(00:26):
Well, hey there, guys, welcomeback to another episode, a bonus
episode even, of the AuthorRevolution podcast.
This one was not scheduled, guys, it's one that I just kind
of felt compelled to talk about, and so here I am sharing a
bonus episode for 2025 with you.
Bonus episode for 2025 with you.
(00:49):
So we need to have a talk, because I've been really
thinking about how much successand growth and the way that we
look at our author careers hasbeen honestly, all wrong, right?
So I want you to think aboutthis.
What if everything you've beentold about making money, growing
your readership and and makingit in publishing is wrong?
Today, I'm going to break downthe biggest myths that I've
(01:10):
learned over the years aboutsuccess, and I want to show you
a completely different way tobuild the author career that you
really actually want.
And this comes from years of myown personal experience hopping
into this industry, thinking Iwanted one thing and then
realizing, no, really I wantedsomething else, but this is the
way that everyone was trying topush us, hurt us, in a sense, to
(01:34):
go.
Okay, let's start with themyths, and I want you to think
about this and just kind ofsettle into it for a minute.
Myth number one is you have tohustle 24-7 to succeed.
Man, I'll tell you what.
That was definitely the myththat I came into the industry
with.
I was coming in, I was writing,starting in 2010.
(01:55):
I started publishing likeliterally hitting the publishing
button in 2013.
And around that same time, shortly after that was when,
like, the whole 20 bookssituation happened.
But Amanda Hawking was alreadydoing this right, she was
already setting the stage thatif you wanted to earn big, you
needed to publish like a lunatic.
And honestly, at the time ithadn't ever occurred to me.
(02:19):
Like when I first landed into20 books to 50K, that Facebook
group blew my mind because itliterally had never occurred to
me to publish that fast.
And part of the reason for itwas because when I first started
writing, I was doing it for thelove of the story.
I was doing it literally forthe inspiration, the hit that
(02:39):
came to me and I just I knew Ihad to tell this story.
I knew that Pandamas had tocome out, that Runa's story
needed to be told, that was it,like end of story.
And so opening my eyes to thisconcept of oh, you can do it
faster was kind of fascinatingto a degree, because my
neurodivergent brain is like oh,this is a challenge, this is
(03:01):
something that not everyone cando.
Let's see if I can do it.
But I quickly found that Ididn't enjoy it at all Like not
at all.
In fact, it put me intocomplete dysregulation.
It funked up my nervous systemBack in 2017, when I was rapid
releasing the last two books ofthat series.
I ended up getting TMJ so badthat I had to go to a physical
(03:22):
therapist to fix it and it'sstill, to this day, gives me
issues.
So, needless to say, you know, when we are trying to do this
whole hustle and grind mentality, it's really just keeping us
broke and it's burning us thefuck out.
It's putting us into a state ofcomplete and total nervous
system dysregulation, unless youfeel, feel aligned for it.
(03:44):
But even the people who writelike this, even the people who
really are enjoying thispublishing methodology, they're
not a hundred percent with it,like every author I've ever
worked with who has published alot of books, still feels, on
some level, like they arechasing something.
They're chasing success, they're chasing the dollar,
they're chasing the algorithmsand they're not quite reaching
(04:07):
what they want, right.
And so when I started realizingthat this system was not.
It was not beneficial for usand I was putting out a rapid
release roadmap back in 2019.
That was the initial time I wasdoing this.
I knew that I had to teachsomething that was different.
I knew that I had to showauthors that you can still rapid
(04:28):
release.
It's just a methodology of howyou publish your books and it
doesn't mean a book a month or acrazy lunatic way, right, it
just means how you're going topublish and you're going to
publish it more rapidly thanmost and you're going to give
yourself an actual editorialcalendar to do so than most, and
you're going to give yourselfan actual editorial calendar to
do so.
But I knew I couldn't justteach a book a month, because
(04:51):
that did not feel sustainable tome.
It didn't feel like long-term Icould do it.
It didn't feel like long-term,most people could do it, and so
I kind of decided to cap it atfour books a year, and that's
where the concept of rapidrelease roadmap really came from
.
But from that point, once Istarted digging into how I was
feeling, how I was working whenit came to my publishing
(05:11):
schedule, how was I feeling whenI was creating the editorial
calendars and not taking timeoff, like I started having to
schedule time off because thishustle, grind, go, go, go kind
of culture makes you feel likeyou're failing if you are not
succeeding in a monetary way, inthe way that certain others are
(05:32):
, or even what they're saying.
Right, we sometimes take thingsat face value, not really
looking deeper.
So some of these people who areearning six figures, they were
also spending close to sixfigures to earn the six figures,
and so there's like thisdisconnect between what they
earn and what it took to getthere, and then you're only
(05:54):
seeing the end result and soyou're judging yourself against
it all and it really just putsus into this manic kind of
manifestation mode.
Right, whether you understoodmanifestation or I understood
manifestation, the way that Idid at the time, is irrelevant.
You're manifesting all the time, right?
So the difference between thatmanic manifestation and aligned
(06:17):
action is number one trustingyourself.
Right, it's about getting backinto who you are at your core.
Why did you choose to do thiswriting?
Why did you choose thisparticular genre?
What did you believe when youfirst started?
If you go back and ask yourselfthose questions, it can be
pretty apparent as to why yourauthor career hasn't taken off
(06:40):
in the way that you thought itwould.
I think I've talked about thison the podcast before, but for
me, I always wanted an authorcareer that felt sustainable,
that felt good, that feltaligned with my creativity.
I wanted to be able to justcreate when I felt inspired to
create and I wanted it to be afoundation right, I didn't want
to just have like this one anddone big flare up of popularity.
(07:03):
So I knew that I wanted to havea backlist.
I just didn't quite understandhow big of a backlist I was
going to be creating at thatpoint.
It was just more of a you know.
Oh, I need to do this thing andI want it to feel like this.
And so when wrap you know, whenthis whole rapid releasing
thing through 20 books cameabout, it was like, oh, this is
how I do it quicker.
Okay, I like this, except it.
(07:23):
It just it didn't work becauseit wasn't aligned with who I was
and what I was really wanting.
I wanted that foundation, Iwanted to ease and flow, I
wanted to tap into my creativity.
I wanted to share the, the deepthoughts that are in my head
that oftentimes I have no oneelse to tell.
And so that was really mypurpose, my starting point for
(07:46):
becoming a published author.
It wasn't to earn a shit ton ofmoney, it wasn't to be this
highly successful, highlyvisible, whatever, even though
it's okay for me to have that, even though it's okay for me to
call that in, even though mygoals might have changed
throughout the years and I'vealigned more with that higher
(08:06):
vibration that you know, millionaire author vibe, I've
aligned with it At the time itwasn't, and so I needed to be
able to take a closer look atwhere the disconnect was before
things could really flow andease could come into it.
Okay, so myth number two thealgorithm is against you.
(08:27):
Oh, I love this one because Ithink I have even played into
this myth right, you know, whether it be Facebook
algorithms or Amazon adalgorithms or Amazon algorithms
in general or whatever, likewe're all in this place of you
know, trying to compete, itfeels like, and it's easy to
(08:52):
blame the algorithms, it's easyto blame something else as to
why we're not succeeding, butthe truth of the matter is our
energy, is what attracts Ourenergy that we put out, our
belief, structure, the thoughtsthat we think, the feelings we
feel based off the thoughts thatwe think, whether or not we
feel safe with money, with moresuccess and visibility all of
those things play a role intowhether or not we attract more
(09:15):
readers, and it does morehonestly than your ad spend ever
could.
80% of your success is going tocome from your energetics and
20% of that aligned action Kidyou not.
So if you can get your mindset, your energy on board and that's
not just your mind, that's oneof the things I've really
(09:36):
learned over this past year ofdoing a lot of the inner child
shadow work.
I've done a lot of the innerwork and now it's been really
fascinating because I've beentrying to become and embody the
wealthy woman, the wealthycourse creator, the wealthy
author, because there's alwaysbeen that level.
(09:57):
I didn't grow up in a placewhere money was a big thing.
My family was very poor we mybrother, who had a brain tumor,
and most of the money that theyhad went towards medical bills
at the time because they didn'thave the kind of medical
insurance that we have now, andso we grew up super poor and so
that that's not like the statusquo vibration that I grew up
(10:20):
with, and so I've had to retrainmyself, but it starts in the
mind.
Okay, and so what I want to sayhere is that what I've learned
over the years is it starts inyour mind.
You have to work on thesubconscious elements of it
first.
That's where hypnosis andmeditations and a lot of the
mental retraining comes in,because when you can retrain
(10:41):
your brain on how you think, youthink different thoughts which
impact your feelings in a newway, like I'll give you an
example.
You know, if you're, if you feellike you're always failing,
like why isn't this working?
Nothing is working.
I don't understand why everytime I put a book out, nothing
happens.
No one's listening.
Feel how that feels in yourbody for a second.
(11:02):
Like those thoughts, if thoseare on repeat in your mind all
the time, they are automaticallytriggering your autonomic
nervous system to go into fightor flight because it doesn't
know how to fix it.
It doesn't know what is goingwrong and it doesn't know where
the bear is or where theevildoer is to be able to slay
and slash right.
There is no way to be able tofix it.
(11:24):
And so you're in this chronicstress loop where, if you were
to shift those thoughts from youknow it's never working to oh
my gosh, you know today's thebest day ever.
I don't know what's going tohappen, but something amazing is
going to happen.
I don't know how many newreaders I'm going to get today,
but I know it's going to be alot, because everything is
working out for me.
The universe is always workingto show me that I'm in the right
(11:45):
track, doing the right thing atthe right time, and I can't
wait to see what sort of coolthings are going to happen today
.
Like, oh my gosh, what if I gotyou know, five new readers
today?
What if I had three new reviewstoday?
What if 14 people bought mybonus whatever on my website
today?
Like, do you see where it'sdifferent?
Do you see that vibe?
(12:07):
But it takes time to be able toretrain our minds and it takes
time to be able to get back onboard with the thoughts that are
more in alignment with who wereally are.
Honestly, because a lot of thatwhy is it not working?
Is because we're observing theexternal world and we are
internalizing what we're seeingrather than just going.
Okay, what's happening rightnow is interesting because it's
(12:29):
showing me what kind of thoughts, what kind of vibration, I've
been putting out into the worldbefore this moment.
But it's old news.
So it's my job now to go.
That's old news.
I don't want that anymore.
So I'm going to decide andchoose to shift my thoughts, to
change my vibration, to do thework, to be able to embody the
version of me who has what Iwant.
(12:51):
What do I want?
Well, it's obviously notwhatever's just happening right.
The thing that's in lack, youknow, the lack of readers, lack
of responses, the lack ofwhatever.
So therefore, I'm going toretrain my brain to start
thinking more positive thoughts.
No-transcript, the inner work.
(13:12):
When it comes to, like you know, inner child work, find out
where these wounds came from.
The shadow work.
They're kind of entwinedbecause shadow work is really
coming into that inner childwork.
But you want to go into thosemoments to be able to reframe
them, to be able to look atwhere did this thought come from
, why do I believe this thought?
Because it's obviously notserving me and then be able to
(13:33):
shift it.
But what I was trying to saywas this year I've noticed I've
gone through the cycle of allthe mentality work right and as
a neurodivergent manifester youknow, I'm autistic, adhd I have
a lot of pattern recognition.
I'm realizing now that I'mmoving out of the mentality
phase Like I've done enough ofthat is kind of how it feels,
(13:56):
and I've got this embodimentpiece that I have always done.
I'm an energetic healer, so I doReiki.
I've been a Reiki master since2002 or three it's been a long
time before my kids were bornand so to me, energy has always
been something I could read, like I can read people, I can
read your thoughts, I can readyour thoughts.
I can read your words.
I can read your language, yourbody language.
(14:18):
I can read the tonal structureand frequency of what your words
are saying, without you evenrealizing it.
I can even do it with thewritten word.
Like I can tell when I'mreading a book if someone is in
a high vibrational state versussomeone who is wanting you to
believe they're in a highvibrational state.
There's a difference, and so, atany rate, as I've moved through
(14:40):
this past year and I've cleanedup my energy and my vibration
around my thoughts, it's likeI've naturally been led into
this embodiment piece.
And the embodiment piece isreally all about feeling safe in
your nervous system and we'vetalked a lot about this last
year because I started movinginto it last year.
But, like your heart, coherenceis a big part of it getting
(15:01):
into heart coherence, gettingback into the body where you
feel love and joy and peace andgratitude and all the good
things.
But even further, even morethan that, one of the things
that I've been learning is thatyou know, as you're calling
something in, sometimes we haveto retrain your body to feel
safe in the calling in of thething so that we can have and
(15:22):
hold the capacity to bring it in.
So one of the ways that Ireally enjoy, and it's something
that I am teaching inMillionaire Author Manifestation
this year we haveimplementation weeks in this
course and so I'm dropping intosomatic healing exercises so
that we can embody the versionof us that's calling these
things in, but then to remindour nervous system that we're
(15:45):
safe to do so.
So each of our implementationweeks we've got four of them are
all about the embodiment aspectand pulling everything in and
making sure that we are, youknow, really honestly, becoming
the safe version of us who getsto step into our full power, our
full potential and do all thethings so important.
(16:06):
And this is so.
It's been so interesting towitness because, as the observer
, I see what's happening, I seethat I'm moving out of the
mentality phase and now into theembodiment phase, and so it
almost feels as though I've beenon this journey to really
understand as deeply as Ipossibly can all of the
components, and once I've I'veenergetically wrapped up one
(16:29):
piece, now I'm it's like,instinctively, intuitively, I'm
moving into the next.
So cool, anyway, okay, so okay.
So let's go on to myth three.
Number three is that writersdon't make real money.
I've heard this over and overthroughout the years.
I've even bought this at times, like there was.
It can look in variousdifferent forms too.
Like for me, it was, oh, youknow, urban fantasy.
(16:51):
Writers don't make money.
You have to be in romance inorder to make real money.
Have you ever felt like that?
Yeah, it's a thing, but ourbeliefs dictate how much we
actually allow ourselves toreceive.
So if you don't believe, you canearn money as a you know, I
don't even know like urbanfantasy, paranormal fantasy
author that's myself If youdon't believe it, you're not
(17:14):
going to be able to pull it in.
You won't take the inspiredaction to be like hey, world,
check out this amazing book thatI just did, if you like, xyz
types of people and tropes andcharacters and storylines and
all the things.
You're going to love this book.
You're not going to putyourself out there to be able to
share the information and if itgoes deeper, like you don't
believe that you can make realmoney, it doesn't matter how
(17:37):
many different pen names you putout there, it doesn't matter
how many different things youare sharing with the world, you
are not going to earn the moneyuntil you can go back and
reframe your beliefs around whatyou personally get to receive.
And that's another thing that'sreally interesting about
millionaire author manifestationis because this stuff
transcends manifestation mindsetwork, mentality work, somatic
(18:00):
work, embodiment work it alltranscends into all other
aspects of your life.
Like once you learn these tools, you can apply them to
everything.
It's amazing.
I know so many different authorswho have shifted their mindset
and saw massive, massivefinancial success.
And sometimes it requiresthinking outside the box, right.
(18:20):
I have authors who havementored who have, you know,
thought that they couldn't earnmoney on Amazon, so they ended
up opening a Shopify store andit blew up.
Or they were pushing andpushing and pushing with their
eBooks and then, when theystarted pushing with their audio
books, now everything elseworked.
That was Alicia and Megan.
So if you go back and listen totheir podcast episodes when
(18:40):
they were on, you'll see so much, so much good stuff there.
But sometimes we just have toshift what we believe about
ourselves, what we believe aboutmoney, what we believe about
how we get to receive or why weget to receive.
Like today I just had a hugebreakthrough where I realized
that part of the thing that'sholding me back is the fact that
(19:01):
my mom has.
She's an artist, so she she'san acrylic painter and she has
been for a long time and I as akid grew up kind of following in
my mother's footsteps.
I married at 18.
My mom married my dad at 18.
I thankfully did not have a kidat 19.
I waited until I was 26,.
But you know, kind of gotmarried young, was doing the
(19:23):
thing.
But I broke a lot of thesimilarities when I got a
divorce and what ended uphappening was like the whole
family structure at the timecrumbled, like I was disowned
for a little while because of it.
They didn't understand all thethings.
So there's an element in mynervous system where, if I veer
off from the norm of what mymother's trajectory is will I be
(19:44):
let down again?
Will I be disowned again?
And I know that money-wise thisis not the case.
This is a completely differentthing.
There isn't as much chargethere.
But what's interesting about itis like my mom, as the visual
artist, as the acrylic painter, she always was trying to get her
stuff off the ground.
She was always trying to beseen, she was always trying to
be recognized as an expert inher industry and, funnily enough
(20:08):
, she was also a teacher.
But she taught in person andshe never really truly made it
and so she decided one day tojust give up.
And that's not, that's not inmy nature.
But at the same time there's anelement of me where I've
recognized I've been holdingmyself back in a lot of ways,
whether it be books, whether itbe, you know, author evolution
(20:30):
or this neurodivergentmanifester brand that I'm
launching.
There's this, this thing in mewhere it's like if I succeed and
I do the thing that I want todo, is my mom going to be happy
or is she going to be, you know, really upset and is this going
to cause problems again?
And I've had to go intomeditation and kind of rework
and reframe it over and oversimilar thoughts, but today, for
(20:55):
whatever reason, it just reallyhit like I could really see the
pattern in it and I was like no, we're done with this.
This is a thought that nolonger has to be a thing, and
I'm letting it go.
You know what I mean.
So think about.
What is your shift or yourparadigm when it comes to
writers and money?
Is there something there thatis in the back of your mind that
you believe?
(21:15):
I want you to look at it,because sometimes our conscious
mind is saying we want one thing, but in the back of our mind
we're like but is it, though?
Will it work like that?
You know what I mean.
There's like that littleniggling thought, and it takes a
level of awareness to catch it.
It does take a level ofawareness Sometimes we don't
catch it until after the factlevel of awareness to catch it.
(21:36):
It does take a level ofawareness.
Sometimes we don't catch ituntil after the fact, and that's
why sometimes that whole youknow that whole saying hindsight
is 20-20.
The reason of that is becauseour like, we still catch those
thoughts.
We just don't consciously bringthem to the surface enough to
be able to latch onto them, andso it's interesting if you
really dig into it, like, isthere a level there for you
where you're just like I'm notsure this is going to work for
(21:58):
me and or this isn't how I wantit to work for me?
Like, are you, are you goingdown the track of someone else's
path, thinking that you have todo it this way, but you hate it
?
Like, are you doing ads becauseyou hate it, but you think it's
a necessary evil?
Stop doing that shit.
Stop.
You are not going to flow yourenergy and be in alignment with
the creative that you are whenyou are doing things that do not
(22:21):
feel like they're in alignmentwith what you want or who you
get to be.
You either need to get yourenergy on board or you need to
shift your mentality around it.
Okay, so let's talk about that.
Like, what if all of thosemyths are completely wrong which
, by the way, they are?
It makes us then have to askthe question what actually works
right?
Here's three shifts I want youto be thinking about in place of
(22:44):
those.
Shift, number one is successcomes from alignment, not effort
.
You've heard me talk aboutefforting from Abraham Hicks in
the past, and the reason this isso important is because
efforting without alignment isjust action in motion, and that
means your mindset.
You could still be going.
This is not going to work.
I don't know why I'm doing this.
This whole thing is stupid andyou're going through the motions
(23:07):
and doing the effort, butyou're not in alignment with the
thing that you actually want.
So if your energy and yourmentality is not on board with
you, all the work in the worldis not going to bring you the
success that you want.
Writing 300 books and notfeeling like any of them are
going to be success, the successthat you want them to be that's
(23:30):
pointless.
There's no reason for it.
You are literally spinning yourwheels.
That's pointless.
There's no reason for it.
You are literally spinning yourwheels.
So I want you to really thinkabout that.
Your energy and your beliefsmatter more than the number of
books you release.
It matters more than the adsyou put out or the number of
times you post on social mediaor any of those things.
I want you to instead bethinking about working less and
(23:52):
making more.
What feels like ease andcomfort and peace and flow for
you?
What were you trying to call inwhen you first became the
author that you are right, because I'll bet money that
there was an aligned componentto you in the very beginning,
but you got sidetracked.
You believed something thattook you off track and now
(24:13):
you're kind of sitting in thisparadigm where you are just
spinning your wheels.
Time to shift it, time to shiftit, my friend, okay, so shift.
Number two, then is you don'tchase success, you attract it.
Okay, you attract the success.
So when you look back at all thesuccessful authors and what
(24:33):
they're doing, they are notforcing it, they are tapping
into the flow.
They trusted and believed atsome component, at some point in
their author careers that thisgets to work for them, that this
story was the fucking bollocks,as my husband would say.
He says that all the time.
Colin is a big one with thatBritish for the win, but anyway,
(24:54):
you get the point right.
They believed in their story sostrongly that the universe
conspired to help them attractit and to create that reality
for them.
This is why we see a lot ofthese books out there that are
such hot successes and when weread them we're like that wasn't
all that.
Why is this such a big deal?
(25:14):
It's not about whether or notit's perfect.
It's not about whether or notit's the greatest story ever.
It's about their energy andwhat they believed behind it
when they put it out there.
Do you see what I'm saying?
It's a little bit different,okay.
So shift number three is you, myfriend, are the creator of your
reality.
You have to take radicalresponsibility about what you
(25:37):
are seeing in your reality.
And that's not to say thatshitty things don't happen.
I'm not saying that traumaisn't real.
But when you are receivingthings in your reality, no
matter what it is, at some levelyou have energetically allowed
it.
And I know it sounds hard, especially when there are things
that we don't wanna see in thisworld.
(25:58):
But the hard things are thereto force shifts.
They're there to force us tochange.
They're there to force us tothink and see things differently
.
Contrast is there to show uswhat we don't want, so that we
know more clearly what we dowant, right?
So you're the creator.
Your success doesn't come, youknow, from a publisher, amazon
(26:18):
or ads, not even your readers.
It comes from your energy, yourbeliefs and how much you allow
yourself to receive.
So if you're giving your, yourpower and your permission away,
weeding on, you know, apublisher or Amazon or any of
those readers to come find you.
You are giving your power awayand you're not embracing and
(26:39):
harnessing the incredibleco-creator with the universe
that you are.
We live in a quantum field ofenergy.
I mean, if you want to reallytap into this energy of
expansion, go outside on the,you know, like a summer night,
or right now it's, like you know, march.
It's kind of cold here inMinnesota, but you'll get the
(27:01):
point.
You go outside in the night, look up at those stars and tell
me, tell me that all thesethings Amazon ads, facebook ads,
facebook in general that itmatters, it doesn't.
