Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to
another episode of the Bearded
Mystic podcast, and I am yourhost, rahul N Singh.
Thank you for joining today andI really appreciate you
watching or listening to this totalk a little bit about how
(00:27):
everyday living is spiritualsadhana.
So a sadhana is, or spiritualpractice, is not necessarily
just something we do on the offchance, but it's in every aspect
of life, whether that'sbrushing our teeth in the
morning, whether that's grabbinga bite to eat, grabbing our
(00:51):
coffee, drinking our coffee, eating our food, whether it's,
you know, doing chores aroundthe house, going to work,
driving the car, going on thebus or the train all of this can
be a spiritual sadhana.
Now, how the reason why there'ssuch a disconnect for a lot of
(01:17):
people when they are on thisspiritual path?
Because what happens is peoplethink oh, maybe I can get
enlightened if I do somemeditation or if I do some
chanting, or if I read theBhagavad Gita, or if I read the
Upanishads or the AshtavakraGita and it tells me that I'm
(01:39):
enlightened.
I will be enlightened and Iwish things were as easy as that
.
You know, I wish that you knowfor my own spiritual practice
that it was that easy, but itturns out that it's never really
that easy, especially not forthe majority of us, shall we say
(02:00):
.
And so this gradual kind ofawakening that happens, or the
gradual enlightenment thatsuddenly descends into our
awareness is, or shall we say, that our mind becomes attuned to
(02:20):
, is something that takesincredible amount of time,
practice and deliberateawareness of one's true nature.
Now, essentially, we are thistruth, we are this reality, we
are Brahman, we are the nirguna, the attributeless, we are
(02:43):
formless.
That is absolutely true.
There is nothing that is, youknow, contradictory of that.
That is the absolute truth.
You are Satchitananda, you areexistence, consciousness, bliss.
That means all of this isessentially you, and you are
awareness itself, and yournature is of peace, contentment,
(03:09):
love, bliss, and this is verynatural.
But again, when this only comesabout, there's two ways.
One is through the grace of theGuru.
And even with that, if we thinkthat we can just get the grace
of the Guru very easily, Idisagree with that.
(03:30):
I think, yes, the Guru willalways give their grace, there
is no doubt about that.
But it's not so easy to thinkthat, well, if I just get the
grace of the Guru, then I can dowhatever I like.
That means, you know I can keepthe same vasanas that I had
(03:50):
meaning, that I can keep hurtingothers, I can keep being
jealous of others, I can keepbeing prideful, I can keep hold
of my ego.
That's not having the grace ofthe Guru.
The grace of the Guru is suchthat it brings.
If we apply it to our life, then the grace of the Guru means
(04:13):
that and this is what we weretaught growing up that a Guru, a
devotee, they see with theGuru's eyes, they hear with the
Guru's eyes, they hear with theGuru's ears, they walk like the
Guru walks, they talk as theGuru talks, and so every action
(04:38):
they do is as if the Guru isdoing it.
Now, imagine if that wassomething that we actually
applied in our life.
If we actually thought like theGuru thought, can you imagine
how peaceful our life would be,how blissful our life would be?
So the path of actually doingthat.
Because the Guru is theembodiment of that truth, of
(05:02):
that reality, and therefore, when we apply that, we naturally
become that.
And therefore, if we becomelike the Guru in the terms of
our actions, our behavior, ourcharacter, then naturally you
are embodying also what God is,or what Brahman is, or what
(05:25):
Ishwar is, or what this Nirakaris, this formless is.
So this is very important.
And remember, when we talk aboutawareness, a lot of people
think it's static.
It's static in the sense ofit's all-pervading, but it's
also dynamic in thatall-pervading aspect.
(05:47):
Hence there's samsara, hence, you know, instead of seeing the
world as something separate toyou, it's actually you, it's a
reflection of you, so, uh, sothat's very important to
understand.
So when we, if we follow thepath of surrendering to the guru
(06:08):
which is a good path in myopinion, a good option, an easy
option, a simple option, shall Isay, not easy, it can be done.
And just think about it.
When you embody what the Guruis like and you do that, you
automatically have thatawareness present in you, that
(06:29):
awareness of your true nature.
You will know that you areBrahman.
It becomes very natural.
But a lot of us also have thedichotomy of being the seeker
and the guru.
So some of us like to thinkthat it's blasphemous to say to
be like the guru, but the guru, but the guru doesn't have such
(06:53):
issues.
It's more on the devotee's part, and one where I say that it
shows more of the ego of thedevotee, not necessarily the,
not necessarily the humility ofthe devotee.
So that's one aspect.
That's.
That's a good one to do.
The other one, that is uh, thatI would like to just talk about
(07:16):
more, is because you knowthere's, we have different
avatars that we are playing, youknow.
So sometimes there's a, there'sa me that's uh, at home,
there's a me at work, there's ame at school, there's a me at,
you know, the place of worshipwe go to.
There's a me, you know, we haveseveral little me's and and
(07:41):
they and they are differentpersonalities in those different
circumstances or situations.
Now, that's not right.
That's opening the door to, asI would say, schizophrenia.
You are asking for you to bedisassociated from your central
(08:03):
self.
However, yes, you can be thesame person, the same self, and
yet, with nuance, be adaptableaccording to the situation, so
you don't change who you are.
So it's not like at home, you're this free being that has
(08:27):
a joke and a laugh, and then atwork, you're totally serious,
and then at, uh, your place ofworship, you, you're a complete
devotee, but as soon as you stepout of the place of worship,
you are totally mean, you know, and you're totally rude.
That's not what I'm talkingabout.
(08:49):
I'm talking about.
You adapt to the situation.
So, for example, if you have tostick up for yourself because
somebody is trying to demean you, then that's what you do.
That doesn't mean you're goingaway from your true self.
You're literally just dealingwith the situation.
So, rather than being adifferent character, all you do
(09:11):
is you adapt according to thesituation.
But that's one point.
The second point is this thatyou see everything as a
spiritual practice.
Everything is your sadhana.
So, whether that's cleaningyour house, whether that's
cleaning the car which I need todo, which is whether it's
(09:33):
mowing the lawn, whether it's,like I mentioned earlier,
brushing your teeth, doing allthe mundane things, but you do
it with the awareness that youare not the doer, you're not the
karta, you're not the andyou're not the bogta either.
You're not the enjoyer of thoseactions.
To be in that state where yousee everything as a spiritual
(09:55):
practice, where you seeeverything as doing it for the
divine, because you see thedivine in all, as doing it for
the divine, because you see thedivine in all, is also a way
where you start divinizing yourday-to-day life.
Imagine that you are constantlydoing things, but with the
awareness that you're not thedoer, that awareness is doing
(10:17):
everything.
Imagine that Awareness is notdoing anything, or consciousness
is not doing anything, but whenyou start, well, god is doing
this to me, then you're going toact from that higher self.
Now the meaning of this is thateven if there's a situation
which you're, which where thereis conflict, you will always
(10:37):
have the higher ground, becauseyou would think that even that
argument or that kind ofnegative situation is also a
place where you practice yourspirituality and that you see
the divine in that.
And we have to train our mindto be like that.
So it's a bit more challengingthan the previous one that I
(11:00):
talked about, but but it can bedone and if we do practice this,
we can go far.
We can really take ourspirituality to the next level.
So all we have to do there isjust one remember our true
nature and again, remember, whenyou're doing an action, to let
(11:20):
go.
So you don't seek the fruits ofthose actions.
So you become the non-doer andyou understand that you're the
non-doer.
It's just the body acting.
That's all you do.
The body's acting according tonature.
That's simply as it is.
When you're doing your job, yes, there's a fruit to your job,
but that doesn't mean you seekthat fruit.
(11:42):
You work because you see thedivine in that.
You see the divine in caringfor others, for your loved ones,
for your family, for yourfriends.
You know everything that we doif we bring our awareness, our
consciousness to it and we bringthat to the forefront more and
(12:02):
more, so that it becomes ourvery nature, and so being your
personality is your secondnature, so to speak.
This would be a more effectiveway of being spiritual,
naturally, without any conflict.
(12:23):
So the point of today's videoreally is just that you can
spiritualize your life, but it'sdependent on how much you want
to.
But to say that Maya is toostrong or samsara is too strong,
this world is too strong andit's much stronger than your
(12:45):
spiritual self, then that meansyou've or spiritual practice,
that means you have not trulyencountered your spiritual
practice or spirituality, andyou will never give up.
That's the other importantthing.
I was listening to a video of alecture by Swami
Savarabhiyanandaji and he talkedabout this that one shouldn't.
(13:09):
You know, once you had a tasteof spirituality and what it can
bring, you will never give it up.
You can't give it up and youknow, for example, for me, I
don't think, um, I can ever giveup spirituality.
It's literally who I am, I.
I have to read somethingspiritual, I have to meditate, I
(13:34):
have to do simple practicesthat bring awareness into the
forefront.
Um, I try to divinize andspiritualize my day as much as
possible, and it can be done.
And I, I will say that if somefool like me can do it, then
anyone can do it.
(13:56):
And you know, once you see thebenefits, you know, you
automatically understand howgrace moves you and how this
pure consciousness, this divineone, just moves through you and
you don't.
And nothing is complicated,it's all very effortless and it
(14:21):
can be possible for every one ofus.
All we have to do is simplypractice and never give up.
And, yes, there are going to betimes when you know, we have to
understand that we've had manyyears where we've functioned as
(14:43):
if we are part of the materialworld and that material world is
everything.
Of course, to get rid of thatVarsana, that mindset, is
challenging, challenging, butonce we're able to transcend it,
once we're able to deal withthose vasanas and actually start
understanding that spiritualityis in every aspect of life,
(15:06):
spirituality is something wejust cannot live without, and so
all we have to do here ispractice and if there's setbacks
, just remember that thesetbacks are there to make us
learn something, so we'restronger when we get back up.
