Speaker 1 (00:00):
everything,
everywhere.
All that it really is isconsciousness, our pure self,
this Brahman, this NirgunaBrahman, this attribute-less
self.
And many times we're confused.
We go about our day thinkingthat we are this body, we are
(00:22):
this mind.
There is this world and I haveto interact with it, I have to
deal with it, I have to do allthese things, but fundamentally,
this is only there becausewe've not fully identified
ourselves as pure consciousness.
We are always pureconsciousness.
There is no doubt about this.
(00:43):
There's no two ways about it.
But we also somehow create thisnarrative that, well, I am this
body, I am this mind andtherefore resting in pure
consciousness, seems to be verychallenging.
Seems to be very challenging.
(01:04):
Now, if you think about this, everywhere, this all-pervading
consciousness, there is not asingle place where consciousness
is not.
That means there's not a singleplace where you are not.
Remember the fundamentalteaching, or one of the
(01:27):
fundamental teachings in AdvaitaVedanta is Tatvam Asi.
You are that.
You are that pure consciousness, that pure self, the Atma.
Realize the Atma within, realize the Atma that surrounds,
that's in every direction.
There is not a single directionwhere this self is not, where
(01:50):
this Atma is not.
Now, if you can experienceyourself as everywhere, then
that experience of oneness isyour everyday perspective, your
everyday way of living.
(02:10):
So, whether it's people beingharmed in a genocide in any part
of the world, or somebody inextreme prosperity, you are the
one that is present in all ofthat.
You are the one that isconscious of all of that.
(02:31):
Even if something is happeningthousands of miles away, it is
still you experiencing that, thousand miles away.
Now, why is it that we don't ex, why don't we physically
experience that?
That's because our body is hereand there's always going to be
(02:51):
this subtle connection that theAtman, that pure consciousness,
will have with the body and it'slimiting kind of form.
Same thing with the mind weonly know our own thoughts.
(03:12):
And that's because, again, there's going to be this subtle
connection that will remain evenafter enlightenment, after
awakening.
But that doesn't mean that onedoesn't understand or even
doesn't.
That doesn't mean that onedoesn't understand or even
doesn't.
That doesn't mean that onedoesn't even experience.
They do.
They experience theexpansiveness of their true self
(03:33):
, because this is whencompassion comes in, this is
when we commit to selflessservice.
And it's not done for the egoperspective, it's not done for
the egoic mind or the body.
It's done because that's theflow of nature, that's the flow
(03:56):
of consciousness.
When we commit to more of alife lived in the awareness of
pure consciousness, in theawareness of Brahman, in the
awareness of formless awareness, when we function from there,
when we live in that light, thenautomatically compassion arises
(04:17):
, peace arises, contentmentarises.
That doesn't mean that we turnaway from the troubles of the
world, no, in fact.
Remember our dharma is also tospeak against injustice of any
kind, and I don't have to lookfar In America today there's so
(04:39):
much injustice still, andtherefore speaking up about
those injustices is also part ofmy spiritual practice, part of
my spiritual practice.
But one has to keep checkingthat whatever one finds to be an
injustice, is it for theprosperity of everyone or for
(05:00):
most people, or is it at thedetriment of most people?
If it's at the detriment, thenthat means my egoic mind is
somewhere invested.
But if I see it as moreprosperous for everybody or for
most people, then it's comingfrom a place of compassion.
(05:21):
And compassion is naturallythere when one is understanding
and in the full embodiment ofpure awareness, and in the full
embodiment of pure awareness, and then always there is no
(05:41):
other.
Whether past, present or future, this awareness, always is, this
consciousness, always is.
It's never absent for anyamount of time.
You see, avatars can be absent, incarnations can be absent, but
(06:01):
pure consciousness cannot beabsent.
Brahman cannot be absentBecause it's eternal, it's
timeless, it's beyond time, beyond the three structures of
time, it's beyond past, presentand future, and that's what we
(06:23):
have to be aware of.
So it's always here, In yourwaking state, in your dream
state, in your deep sleep state.
Consciousness is, brahman isFormless, awareness is.
There is never a time when itis absent and it's in everything
(06:47):
.
You see, if you look hardenough into something and
realize that everything is empty.
Now really is it empty?
No, is this microphone empty?
No, because the only thing thatis there is this pure
consciousness.
Yes, because the microphonedoesn't have a mind, it cannot
(07:10):
have the subjective experiencelike I'm experiencing, but it's
present.
If we see that consciousness isthe foundation, the substratum
of everything, then every livingthing, every non-living thing,
(07:32):
animate or inanimate, is pureconsciousness alone.
So when that is given inperspective, then again there's
pure oneness and again one willwant to have pure compassion,
because that's what naturallyarises, and therefore pure
action, because one does itselflessly.
(07:52):
There's no selfish motive.
The body and mind is not thedoer and neither is it the
enjoyer.
So when you see it ineverything that consciousness
alone is, that Brahman alone is,awareness alone is, then
lifeman alone is, awarenessalone is, then life is lived in
(08:15):
freedom.
Life is lived in absolutefreedom.
One is not bound by thelimitations of the body and mind
, in the sense of oneunderstands that this is not
(08:37):
their true identity, that's nottheir true nature.
But when you start to understandthat everything and that
includes you that consciousnessalone is, then automatically you
can surrender to this,automatically.
It doesn't actually need effort.
It's so effortlessly done thatyou just surrender to this
(08:58):
moment, to the very thing infront of you right here.
Consciousness alone is in.
This space is consciousness.
It appears to be space, butactually it's consciousness.
And that's what the rishis ofIndia have talked about, what
(09:18):
the Upanishad speaks about, whatmany saints and sages from the
past to present have beentalking about and are talking
about.
And they're not just talkingabout it, they're living it.
And it's all about living inthis awareness.
And so, whatever you take fromthis episode, understand that
(09:41):
consciousness alone is.
