dancing and listening pleasure, and what we have going on this
episode.
Let's put the spectacles on here.
It's been 40 years, it's crazy.
(02:04):
Oh, let me get my mouse here.
Let's do this.
Let's get the banner up and itis right there.
Boom, all right, now I hope youguys see that banner and my
name in blue, because it is notshowing in blue on my side.
But I know from last week'sepisode it was showing in black
(02:28):
and when I went back and watchedthe train wreck we're not even
going to get into it we got aFriday night live coming up.
We'll talk all about that stuff, but everything was in blue.
So I don't know what's going onwith StreamYard.
They seem to have done someupdates and things get changed
around.
And I don't know what's goingon with StreamYard.
They seem to have done someupdates and things get changed
around and I don't even knowabout it.
(02:49):
But nonetheless, 1985 was 40years ago.
Where has the time gone, man?
I was well at this time in 1985, I was 19 years old, so I was
geez.
I was 19 years old, so I wasgeez.
I was just a kid.
(03:09):
But, man, we did this last yearand we're doing it again this
year.
I love it.
We're going to go over somealbums that are turning 40 this
year.
Actually, I think a couple ofthem on the list that I put
together have already turned 40,but I, I just I just picked
(03:33):
these out.
It was no, um, okay, two ofthem, but we'll get to that
later.
Two of them are here for aspecific reason and, uh, the
rest of them, there's no rhymeor reason as to why I picked
them out.
I just did.
I think that they are eitherbig albums in an artist's
(03:56):
catalog or there's just somesignificance to them, and that's
why they're on the list.
I don't know, I got a wholebunch of notes here.
We'll see how it all plays out, right, um, but, but in 1985, I
mean so, so many importantalbums, some of them, I guess
(04:17):
they were even monumental um toan artist, a band, um, and.
But there's so many, just toomany to even mention.
That's why I think I cut itdown to 15.
But we'll discuss some of thehuge albums turning 40 this year
.
So here we go.
Oh, and one thing to take notein this as well.
(04:41):
Mtv was huge at this time, hugein 1985.
Mtv had just had really hittheir stride four years in.
And if you go 40 years backfrom when we're doing this
episode tonight, they weren'teven four years old but they had
(05:04):
their fourth anniversary.
I believe it was August 1st in1985.
And so, on their fourth year, they are really in stride,
hitting it hard, with greatmusic videos, great segments.
The VJs were outstanding, greatguest VJs, breaking news in the
(05:27):
music world, all kinds of goodstuff, if you, I mean, besides
reading the, you know the musicmagazines Hip Parader, or Circus
, or gosh I don't even rememberif they were still out in 85.
Or gosh I don't even rememberif they were still out in 85.
(05:47):
You had to go to MTV to getyour music news.
So MTV was so influential andso huge and really I think for
some of these albums here, thebands that we'll discuss tonight
, you'll see that MTV had a lotto say, a lot to had a lot to
say anyway.
So let's just jump right in.
(06:08):
As I said, no, um, noparticular order, just going to
go with it and instead ofdigging into my uh albums and
CDs, which I really didn't feellike doing.
I, I, um, I printed out thecover of each of the albums, so,
(06:28):
and actually I think I forgotone.
I did, I do, I think I forgotone.
We'll get into it, anyway.
So, number one, number one, turning 40 in 1985, is right
there.
Motley Crue as I knock my waterover Motley Crue's Theater of
Pain, I'm just holding it up tothe camera just for a few
seconds.
Okay, so, theater of Pain, Iforgot to write down the release
(06:54):
date for this one, butobviously it did come out in
1985.
This was the follow-up to theirbig breakthrough in 1983, which
was Shout at the Devil.
The album itself is not a hugefavorite among the band members
these days.
However, the album did have alot of success.
(07:18):
It reached number six on theBillboard Top 200 album chart,
and you know, billboards got abunch of charts out there.
The ones that that we focus ona lot here are the billboard hot
100 or the top 40 and, um, thebillboard top 200, which is the
top 200 of the out.
That's the album chart.
Okay, so, um.
(07:40):
So, theater of pain reachnumber six on the Billboard Top
200 chart.
It's sold over 4 million copiesjust in the US alone.
So, even though the band maynot care for it, it was
incredibly successful, biggerthan their previous album, their
(08:00):
previous album.
It had two hit songs on two hitsingles.
A cover of the BrownsvilleStation Smokin' in the Boys'
Room that was the big video thatplayed on MTV and so I think
(08:21):
MTV was a driver in that as well.
Of course Motley Crue fans wereamped up to get something new
from the band coming off of 1983and Shout at the Devil.
This one took a little bit of aturn from that album and it
kind of turned off some fans too, but nonetheless it was mighty
(08:41):
successful.
The second single and anotherbig MTV video was Home, sweet
Home.
So there's the first oneturning 40 this year, 1985.
Number two we've got AerosmithDone With Mirrors.
(09:02):
Okay Again, I was just puttingthis show together this
afternoon so I forgot to writethe release date on that.
But this one is the eighth albumin the Aerosmith catalog.
It's the return of BradWhitford and Joe Perry to the
(09:24):
band after about a five-yearabsence.
They both left in about 1980,right after Night in the Ruts
was released.
There were no real hits on thealbum.
Commercially it wasn't wellreceived.
Critically it got good reviews.
(09:45):
But more important in theband's history because it, more
importantly than the success ofit or critical acclaim or
whatever it began.
What was the band's comeback atthat time, which?
That comeback included?
Some of the biggest albums intheir history.
(10:08):
Geez, what was that?
Permanent Vacation?
I think there was Pump and Geta Grip, those three back to back
to back.
I didn't look at the stats onthose, but those probably are
the biggest three albums intheir catalog Huge, huge albums.
(10:32):
This began that run and putAerosmith back on the map.
Of course they had the big songand video with Run DMC, walk
this Way.
That was a year after this onewas released, that was in 1986.
And again, big video MTV, boom.
There you go.
All this kind of togetherlaunched the comeback of
Aerosmith, because they werekind of down and out at that
(10:55):
point.
But yeah, so then let's move tothe next one on the list.
Put these things back on.
Phil Collins.
No Jacket Required.
(11:16):
This one is Phil's third soloalbum.
It was released on February18th in 1985.
You know what?
We know we're talking 1985 here.
We know we're talking 40 yearslater.
So I'm going to give the monthand the date, I'm not going to
give the year every time out.
(11:36):
It's just silly.
This one had five singlesSusudio, one More Night, don't
Lose my Number.
Who Said I Said and Take Me Home?
Huge radio play for this album.
Huge MTV play for this album.
One of the best-selling albumsof the 80s and one of the
(12:03):
best-selling albums all time.
It's sold over.
It has, to this date, sold over25 million copies worldwide, so
absolutely huge.
Obviously, phil Collins' biggestsolo album amongst I think he
has like eight of them, eight ornine, something like that, I
don't recall but his biggest.
(12:24):
The thing's just enormous, um,and a great album too.
Just a great, great, greatalbum Really really is.
Um, and I mentioned a fewepisodes back when spaz was in
studio with me, when we weretalking about and Roll Hall of
Fame nominees, we went oversnubs and Phil Collins was one
(12:53):
of those snubs that we discussedAbsolutely a snub for the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame.
I mean, if you just took hissolo career, by itself, phil
Collins should be in the Rockand Roll Hall of Fame.
But then you put togetherGenesis and all that.
It's hands down.
So get your heads out of yourrear ends.
Nominating committee.
Let's get it done, okay, movingon.
(13:14):
Moving on to the next.
Well, let's take them one at atime.
Holmes, all right, this oneright here.
You may or may not be able toget a good look at it, but this
is the self-titled album from1985 by Heart.
Apparently, heart couldn't comeup with a better name for the
(13:39):
album that Ann Wilson had saidsomething to the effect that
since they didn't do a lot ofthe songwriting themselves, they
felt like there was nothingthat they could grab a hold of
to give to the title of thealbum.
I don't know, that's her, notme, but whatever the album, it's
(14:00):
Heart's eighth studio album.
It was released on June 21st.
It's Heart's eighth studioalbum.
It was released on June 21st.
Five singles were releasedthese Dreams, what About Love?
Never, nothing at All.
And If Looks Could Kill.
Now the first four.
They all reached the top 10 onthe Billboard Hot 100.
(14:21):
The album itself reached numberone.
It's the biggest selling albumin the Heart catalog and it's
sold over 6 million copiesworldwide.
So it's an absolutely hugealbum and there are times, you
know, the band has come a littlebit.
You know I shouldn't say theband, I should say Ann and Nancy
(14:41):
have come around to this albummore in the last 10 to 15 years.
You know it was a period oftime where they kind of almost
hated this album and a lot of ithad to do with uh, you know the
fact that they did not write alot of the songs on the album
they did.
They did have some, somesongwriting credits on the album
(15:04):
but from what I recall itwasn't even on the big songs.
Not only that, we're talkingabout that mid-80s.
Look, the girls were all turnedinto sex objects, poofed up
hair, short skirts, they had allthat I don't know frilly stuff
and whatever.
(15:25):
It kind of had a.
The band almost kind of had acolonial look to them without
the hats.
But I know that the Wilsonsisters were not crazy about all
that.
But you know they were kind ofkowtowing to management, record
label, whatever it might havebeen at the time being that.
(15:47):
You know they were on a bit ofI won't say a downturn in their
career, but certainly theyweren't at the level of success
that they had had in the mid tolate 70s.
So the early 80s was a littlebit tough for them.
And look, somebody made theright call.
Somebody made the right call onit.
(16:07):
But bottom line was Anna, nancyand their band made these songs
absolutely phenomenal.
So it's a great album.
Great album.
Does it have a little bit of an80s sound to it?
Well, of course, but I thinknot only is it the biggest
selling album in their catalog, but to me it's my favorite.
(16:30):
It's my favorite and I know alot of hardcore heart fans are
going to be like you're an idiotdude.
No, it's Dreamboat Annie orsomething else.
But I really, really like thisalbum.
So it's a good one.
It's definitely a good one.
Next, number five I think wehave 15.
(16:52):
So we got number five righthere.
That would be field.
Now, this was kind of like.
This was John's return after a10-year absence from the music
(17:13):
business.
The last album he had releasedwas in 1975.
And John definitely makes atriumphant comeback with this
one here.
John played all the instrumentsand it speaks to his talents.
On the album it had threesingles released to radio, solid
(17:36):
, solid radio hits.
I think the first one releasedwas the Old man Down the road.
That was, uh, another big MTVsong.
Follow up to that was rock androll girls another big MTV song
too.
And then the third one was thetitle track Great, great song,
great baseball song.
(17:56):
Um, you know, every time youhear that song you just want to
get out, run out onto the ballfield and you know, play some
catch, hit some balls around, whatever it is, I just it's such
, a, such a good song.
It was a huge album, sold over2 million copies in the US alone
and peaking at number one onthe Billboard Top 200 chart.
(18:21):
So good on you, john Fogerty.
And you know, john still soundsgreat to this day.
So forget about anyone elseperforming those Credence songs.
If you want to hear CredenceClearwater revival, you go see
John Fogarty.
He's the one that wrote thesongs.
(18:42):
He's the one that sings thesongs and does a great job.
He still sounds great to thisday.
Yes, good on you again, john.
Next one, let's turn this over.
Next one here.
All right, wet the fingertipshere.
John Cougar Mellencamp'sScarecrow Released July 31st and
(19:10):
it's John's eighth studio album.
A lot of people don't rememberthat.
They don't even realize thatJohn was releasing music in the
70s as John Cougar, but this wasone of his best and
(19:31):
best-selling albums.
It's sold more than 6 millioncopies worldwide.
It had three top 10 hits Let mesee Small Town, lonely Old
Night and ROCK in the USA.
I think this one is my favorite.
Well, I don't know, I don'tknow.
(19:52):
The one prior, uh-huh, yeah,uh-huh, was the one prior to
that.
That was a good one too.
I really did like that one.
That's the one with pink housesand gosh, what else?
Oh, the authority song, andcan't even recall.
(20:13):
Oh, crumbling down or TumblingDown, one of the two.
It's when your walls cometumbling down, you know.
But this is a great album and Ilove the title track.
The title track well, it'sreally not the title track, it's
the title of the song is Rainon the Scarecrow, but you can
sort of call it the title track.
(20:34):
It's a really dark song with, but it's an impassioned plea on
behalf of the small farmers ofAmerica.
Just such a good song, such Idon't know profound lyrics.
Great stuff, great, great stuff.
(20:54):
So it's a great album.
Like I said, it's thebest-selling one in the John
Cougar Actually, I'm sorry theJohn Mellencamp, because after
this album he went back to hisname John Mellencamp.
He took the full Mellencamp nameback Because, if you remember,
(21:16):
early on in his career and ifyou don't remember I'm going to
let you know he was John Cougarhad started to break out and
have his huge success.
That was with the American Foolalbum and the following album,
uh-huh.
He wanted to get rid of thecougar.
He always hated that.
(21:38):
Well, they compromised.
He released the album JohnCougar Mellencamp, uh-huh.
And then this one here, scarecrow, released it under
John Cougar Mellencamp.
But that was the last one Gothis real name back fully after
that.
So good stuff from John.
(22:01):
Next one on the list is RatInvasion of your Privacy.
This one is Rat's.
It's their follow-up to thedebut album, so it's their
second album, released on May30th.
Three singles were released, with the big ones being Lay it
(22:23):
Down and you Love.
Also big videos on MTV, hugevideos Selling over 2 million
copies in the US alone and thenpeaking at number two on the
Billboard Top 200 album chart.
This one solidified Ratt as alegitimate 80s hard rock band.
(22:46):
Great stuff, great band, greatband.
Love Ratt, all right.
Oh, the next one.
Yeah, this one I messed up on.
I forgot to print the albumcover.
This one is Sting.
Dream of the Blue Turtles andthis is Sting's debut solo album
(23:09):
coming off the breakup of thePolice.
If you love somebody, set themfree.
Fortress Around your Heart, russians, moon Over Bourbon
Street and Love is the SeventhWave, were the five singles and
then, while peaking at numbertwo on the top 200, it sold more
(23:32):
than 5 million copies worldwide.
So I didn't go through theSting catalog to see where this
one sits, but I would imaginethat among his solo albums, this
debut is right up there, rightup there with the best ones with
the highest number of sales.
Highest number of sales.
(23:58):
So, um, I just remember thatthat the opening song, or the
opening line on the first singlereleased if you love somebody,
set them free.
It almost sound like Elmer Fuddsinging.
It almost sounds like he'ssaying we, we set them free.
Go back and listen to it.
You'll never hear the song thesame again, I promise.
I promise, let's see.
What else do we got here?
(24:19):
What else do we got All right, this one right.
Come on, get them togetherthere, we go Right here.
Acdc's Fly on the Wall, releasedJune 28th.
(24:40):
Not the same success, of course, as Back in the Black.
Back in Black, back in Black.
Or For those About to Rock, hard to get, you know, hard to
get the same success of Back inBlack.
That one's one of the biggestselling albums worldwide of all
time.
(25:01):
But even for those about torock sold over 4 million copies,
but the band seemed to stumblea little bit.
For the second release in a row, with this one here, fly on the
Wall it still sold 2 millioncopies worldwide.
(25:21):
But most fans find that it'snot quite up to snuff with most
of the catalog.
But for ACDC those guys, theycould fall out of bed and still
sell a million records.
So what are you going to do?
The big songs on it, I think, were Sink, the Pink and I forgot
(25:44):
what else, darn it.
But they would start to hittheir stride a little bit more
in the back half of the 80s,early 90s.
Next one, dire Straits, brothersin Arms, and I'll hold that up
(26:05):
there for a second or two.
I'm going to tell you something, man.
What an absolutely killer, killer album Released May 17th.
It's a monster album for theband.
It's their fifth studio album.
Five singles were released onthis one the title track,
(26:29):
brothers in Arms, your latesttrick, a big single, walk of
Life, a big rock single, so FarAway, and then, of course, the
absolutely stratospheric,enormous Money for Nothing.
The album peaked at number oneeverywhere around the world and
(26:52):
it's sold more than 30 millioncopies worldwide, more than 10
million just in the UnitedStates alone.
Um, so it's, it's, it's so, sogood.
This, uh, brothers in arms, wasthe first first album that I
bought on CD.
First album that I bought on CDand I was, you know, obviously
(27:18):
I was new to CDs in 1985 CDswere fairly new to all of us
back then and I put it on thestereo and I would just crank it
over and over again and it justsounded so, so good and and
that I don't know.
I I think so far away isprobably my favorite song on the
(27:40):
album.
It's just the groove that ithas going money for.
Nothing obviously hands down.
It's just a tremendous song.
You know crazy lyrics, you knowwritten while in an appliance
store, things like that Justnuts bananas.
But yeah, so far away For mymoney, that's like my go-to on
(28:05):
the album.
But it's just a great album andof course, that one definitely
is the biggest in the DireStraits catalog, for sure.
All right, what is up next?
This one right here, anothergreat one, mr Mister, welcome to
the Real World.
(28:26):
If you are unfamiliar with MrMister, you've got to go check
him out.
Short-lived career.
I think they had like fouralbums.
I think the last album theyreleased was like in 1988 or 89,
something like that, which is ashame.
(28:50):
The band was pretty much'stheir second studio album and
it's the biggest one in theircatalog.
It's sold about 2 millioncopies worldwide and it has
great songs on it, greatmusicianship on it, great
(29:19):
musicianship, great vocals fromRichard Page, the lead singer,
who I saw him.
I saw him perform Broken Wings12, 13 years ago and sounded
amazing.
Sounded amazing.
I think he's amazing, soundedamazing.
I think he's.
I think he tours from time totime with uh, ringo stars
(29:39):
all-star band, but, um,absolutely amazing, great songs,
um, just good stuff.
Of course there were.
Now there were four singlesreleased from the album broken
wings huge number one.
Hit kirie another number onehit on the album.
Broken Wings huge number one.
Hit Kyrie another number onehit on the album.
I think.
(30:00):
The other one was Is this Love?
And I think it was.
Black and White was the otherone.
But you know the album throughand through, from top to bottom,
just solid, absolutely solid.
If you're unfamiliar with it, gocheck it out.
(30:21):
You can stream it.
You already know that.
So go check it out.
It's worth a listen and there'san awesome, awesome ballad on
there.
Just thought of it right now.
It's called Run to Her, give ita listen.
Give it a listen.
Good stuff, I promise.
Look, if you get mad at me overany of my suggestions or if you
(30:43):
get mad at me over anything onthe list tonight, leave it in
the comments.
All right, leave it in thecomments and holler at me, let's
see Next up.
Next up is this one here From InExcess Listen Like Thieves.
(31:04):
This is the fifth studiorelease and the biggest seller
to that point, up to 1985.
It was released on October 15thand this one, as far as America
(31:25):
is concerned, this is probablywhen the band began to really
hit their stride.
I think two albums prior, 1983,they had, um, a minor hit.
Uh, it did break the top 40.
That was, um, darn it, itwasn't.
(31:46):
Uh, what was it?
Shoot, I forgot now, whatever, doesn't matter because we're
talking about 1985.
But yeah, in America the bandwasn't really known that well.
So this is where they reallystarted to hit their stride.
The big songs and the bigvideos were what you Need and
(32:09):
this Time, along with the titletrack, those are the big songs
on the album.
Listen Like Thieves is a hugesong for In Excess, what you
Need.
Huge song for In Excess.
Worldwide, the album has soldabout three and a half million
copies.
(32:31):
I only had the pleasure ofseeing In Excess one time live,
and unfortunately it was afterMichael Hutchins had passed away
.
I saw them in 2005, I believeit was, and that was when they
had JD Fortune on lead vocals.
(32:52):
Jd did a fabulous job, greatjob, and in fact the band had
put out an album leading up tothat tour that I had seen them
on.
A great album too, a good album.
Everything about it was inexcess, except the fact that it
wasn't Michael Hutchins.
But, as I said, jd Fortune dida great job.
Yeah, they were in excess.
(33:13):
Fortune did a great job.
Yeah, they were, you know, inexcess.
Just such a great band man.
So good, so good.
All right, where are we Next up?
Man, I'm just like flying by,I'm just like flying through all
this stuff, aren't I?
Well, that's kind of good foryou guys, because you know me, I
(33:33):
get going and I just talk and Italk and then I talk a little
bit more.
So we're kind of making this aneconomic episode.
It looks like so far.
Anyway, who knows?
All right, next up this oneright here, simple Minds Once
Upon a Time.
(33:54):
Now, I'm sure most of you hadno clue.
I had no clue that this wasSimple Minds' seventh studio
album.
This is the biggest one intheir catalog and this is the
one that comes off of.
It comes off of their numberone hit Don't you Forget About
(34:19):
Me that they had on theBreakfast Club soundtrack.
So the name I was familiar withthe band Simple Minds, but I
had no idea that there were sixstudio albums prior to this one
here.
I don't think I'd actuallyheard anything from Simple Minds
until the Breakfast Clubsoundtrack, but that's really
(34:46):
what put those guys on the map.
And this album here is, like Isaid, not only it's their
biggest album, it's sold over 2million copies worldwide and
three singles were released fromit.
All three of those singles aredynamite songs Alive and Kickin'
(35:07):
, man just killer, just a killersong.
Sanctify Yourself, all thethings she said.
Of those three singles, aliveand Kickin' was the biggest of
the three.
It reached number three on theBillboard Hot 100.
(35:28):
But so good, so good.
Such a great album.
It really is Um and worth yourtime.
Um, you know, like I said, Ijust kind of well, I think I'm
getting down to the nitty grittyhere, but up to this point I
just picked these albums out.
Oh, yeah, I remember that one,I remember that one, that one
(35:49):
there.
It wasn't like.
Oh, that one there, it wasn'tlike.
Oh, this one's my favorite here, so I wanted to.
It had nothing to do with it.
So I think that this list that Iput together has got some
absolutely dynamite albumsreleased 40, count it 40 years
ago this year, and that's justsilly, silly to think about.
(36:14):
But go check some of these out.
If some of these kind of piquedyour interest a little bit, go
check them out and then, whenyou do again, leave comments.
Leave comments.
Okay, we can't communicateunless you leave comments or you
call in live on the live show.
All right, next one, the liveshow, all right.
(36:43):
Next one.
This is actually number 14.
Wow, all right.
Next one Kiss Asylum.
Now, this one I did handpickbecause there's no way I'm going
to do a list of albums turning40 this year and not put a Kiss
album on there that was releasedin 1985.
(37:05):
There's just no way it's goingto happen.
So, yeah, I did handpick thatone, but Animal, I mean not
Animalized, that was the onebefore.
Asylum is the 13th studio albumfrom from the band and it's um.
It's the third in a run ofnon-makeup era albums albums.
(37:45):
It's selling a million copiesin the US alone.
It only had one single released.
That was Tears Are Fallen, whichis a fabulous song.
That is such a good song, Idon't know.
I like it because it chugs.
It's got a chugging rhythm toit and I tend to I don't know,
(38:06):
for some reason I tend to leanon a lot of songs that chug and
listen to it.
If you're familiar with it, youknow.
But if you're not, go listen toit and you'll kind of get what
I'm talking about when I say itjust chugs.
But Tears Are Falling greatsong.
It was the one song released toradio Really didn't do anything
(38:28):
on the chart.
However, there were I believeit were three videos from the
album released big MTV videos, which Tears Are Fallen is one of
them.
Excuse me, what else?
Oh yeah, all Night and whoWants to Be Lonely.
(38:49):
Those were the videos releasedto MTV, big videos.
And I don't know many, well many, kiss fans.
I'm not one of them, but manyKISS fans believe that Asylum is
the best of the non-makeupalbums.
(39:12):
But I don't agree that one Idon't agree with.
It's a great album.
I do love it.
I don't remember where I rankedit on my KISS top 20 albums,
but I do like the album a lot.
And I don't know, I think atoss-up between my favorite
(39:33):
songs on the album or Tears AreFallen and King of the Mountain,
which is actually the openingtrack, and that one tears it up
that one is really really good,so good.
So check it out.
If you're unfamiliar with it,go check it out.
It's what you have to do.
Well, like I said, we'regetting down to it and I brought
(39:59):
this one, this one I kind ofhandpicked as well, because last
week I did start to talk about,um, this band during the drunk
show and I was way drunk and Idid not do this band any justice
and trying to talk about them.
So, being 100% sober today, uh,I'm going to talk about this
(40:22):
band right now and this albumright here.
Yeah, I didn't need to printthe album cover on this one
because I had it sitting righthere on the shelf.
The Outfield Play Deep.
It's the debut album.
It was released on August the12th.
It's again the debut album fromthis British trio, the trio of
(40:45):
Tony Lewis on lead vocals andbass, john Spinks on lead guitar
and vocals and Alan Jackman ondrums.
I knew nothing about these guysand one time I'm watching MTV
(41:05):
one of the many times I wouldspend hours watching MTV and
this video comes on.
Say it Isn't so.
It's the opening track on thealbum.
It was their first release, thefirst single they released on
the album.
It's an awesome song.
It might be my favorite song onthe album among 10 fabulous
(41:30):
songs.
This band deserves so much morethan what they got.
Unfortunately, their shelf lifewas not long.
I mean well, they lasted for awhile.
You know.
They went on hiatus for a bit, especially in the 90s.
Coming back together late 90s,early 2000s, put together some
(41:55):
more releases but never wereable to regain the traction that
they had.
Off of this debut album, playDeep.
John Spinks wrote all the songs.
Tony Lewis, of course, sanglead on I think nine of the 10
(42:16):
tracks and I think on the secondalbum their second album,
bangin'.
I think John does lead vocalson one song, so I think he takes
a lead vocal on one song oneach of the albums, at least on
one of the first two albums, butthe second single, your Love.
That's the band's biggest songever.
(42:39):
It's a huge song.
Every 80s compilation albumthat is out there contains this
song.
You can't go anywhere listeningto any 80s music and not hear
your love.
It's a great song.
Not my favorite song on thealbum, but it is still a great
(42:59):
song.
You know it.
Josie's on a vacation far away.
Come on, you guys know it.
You know it.
Don't make me do that.
Great song, great musicianshipfrom these guys.
Really, honestly, great, greatproduction and it has just a
great crisp sound to it.
(43:21):
The album itself does.
I can't talk highly enough aboutthese guys.
You know, the unfortunate thingis the outfield is no more.
They will never, ever be again.
Because, sadly, john Spinkspassed away.
I think it was about 2014.
(43:42):
He had, I think, liver cancerand then mysteriously I don't
want to say mysteriously, it wasjust never divulged Tony Lewis.
He passed away in 2020, I thinkit was late 2020, somewhere
(44:03):
around there, 2019, 2020, 2021,somewhere right around there
might've been 2021.
Um, and it wasn't.
Yeah, it was never disclosed asfar as what his cause of death
was.
So I don't think it wasanything foul play or anything
like that.
It's just mysterious, nobodyknows.
So that's unfortunate, becausethese guys, I absolutely love
(44:27):
these guys.
I had the opportunity, thepleasure, the privilege to see
them perform live one time andit was an absolutely dynamite
show, killer show Sounding so sogood.
And this album itself, it justholds a special place in my
(44:47):
heart.
It is that good.
If you only know the outfieldfor your Love, or Josie, as
everybody calls it, then gocheck it out.
Yeah, then go check it out.
Yeah, just go check it out.
It is just so good.
You know, when you have lyricslike 61 seconds is all it takes
(45:12):
for the nine to five man to beonly one minute late.
Come on, come on.
Who does that?
It's so good, it's so good.
And you know, as I said, theyhad three singles.
The first two say it isn't soyour love or Josie, right?
(45:33):
And then I think all the love,or all the love, like the long
title of it is all the love inthe world.
But the song is just titled allthe love.
Good stuff, absolutely goodstuff, just dynamite.
So check it out.
Um, I'll leave you with that.
(45:54):
Yeah, I, I did leave theoutfield for last, on purpose,
because last week trying to talkabout them while inebriated was
unfair.
I actually listened back to theshow and I'm not going to go
long on this because we've gotmore business to tend to in a
(46:14):
little bit after this episode'sup.
But man, to watch yourself, drunk man, that was not good and
shame on me.
In my mind I kept saying TonyLewis, but I know I said Tony
Spinks like three times.
But in my head I was trying tobe cognizant of it and I kept
(46:39):
saying Tony Lewis, I mean TonySpinks, and in my head I was
saying Tony Lewis.
So just a dummy Anyway.
So I guess, just really quick,I'll run them down just real
fast.
The album's turning 40 thisyear and go check them out.
(47:02):
If you're not familiar withthem, go check them out, go If
you.
If you're not familiar withthem, go check them out.

(49:15):
