Spaz right there, hey, heythat's shannon, that's shannon
(03:56):
cox.
How you doing, shannon?
I am doing great, you all right, listen.
Uh, move your camera just alittle bit.

yourself a little more?
All right, I know I want to seethe albums too.

I see metallica, master ofpuppets.
(04:18):
I see alice in chains.
Wow, uh, looks like david leeroth crazy from the.
I can't even see any of that.
I see Megadeth I don't knowwhich one that one is, and the
light is kind of there's a glareon that one at the top right.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
That's the Blues
Brothers soundtrack.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Oh, yes, all right.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
You've done some work
in the studio since last we had
you on.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Trying.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, no, it's good,
it's good.
Hey look, I guess if you'regonna have a music podcast, you
may as well have some musicposted up in the studio, right?
Sure, yeah, yeah.
So everyone remember and if youdon't remember, you didn't see
the episode.
Of course, there's Shannon Coxright there and Shannon is like
(05:08):
the main man on talking rock fan.
Okay, I'm just like a sometimesguy, all right, shannon's a full
time guy, but uh, yeah, he'sgetting this podcast up and, uh,
up and running, just kind ofstarting to starting to get some
things together to launch it.
And let me put hang on, let medo this.
(05:28):
I want to put the banner up soeveryone knows what we're doing
tonight.
There we go, yeah, so Shannon'sgot his podcast.
He's getting up and going.
He's working on some things heput, put out a it's funny, it's
on YouTube, so I call it a video, but it's all audio.
There's no video to it, but heput out a little introduction to
(05:51):
everyone.
So go check it out.
It's Talking Rock Fan, that's it.
That's it.
That's the name of the podcast, wherever it's going to stream
on YouTube all that good stuff.
Talking rock fan.
And if you missed the episodewhen shannon was on, dudes like
(06:12):
his, his, his, his musical taste.
He has so much more breath onhis musical likings and his
tastes than I do and I I knowwe're to get into it tonight,
maybe even more than you.
Oh and, by the way, shannon, yeah, my buddy Spaz.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Good to meet you,
shannon Spaz.
Shannon, good to meet you, yeah, so anyway.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
so what we're going
to?
Um, we each have come up withour top five albums from 1985.
Now, before you start screamingand hollering, everyone, it's
not the top five best albums, itis our top five.
(07:02):
So our favorite five albumsfrom 1985.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Boy, it's been a long
day and my lips are sticking
together and everything you needto drink some water dude, I
know.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
So what really
brought it on, honestly, is I
did an episode I don't know, amonth ago, six weeks ago,
something like that and it wasbasically just celebrating the
year 1985.
These albums have turned 40this year and I covered 15
(07:37):
albums I could have done 100,but I probably would still be
going recording that episodetoday and so I just randomly
picked 15 albums and went withit, and I know it's great stuff,
but none of you out there knowanything about it, Cause I think
about 10 people have seen it.
So.
(08:00):
So this is kind of a play onthat, where the three of us are
going to bring to you our topfive so we'll drive some more.
Maybe with this you'll get ourlists and then maybe it'll also
drive you to go watch theepisode of these albums turning
40.
So anyway, that was a mouthful,Shannon.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Hey, it's all right,
had to be said, we're here to
celebrate 1985.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Had to be said.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Hold on.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Let me do something
here.
Let me do this Turn the volumeup a little bit.
Can you turn your volume up?
Just a skosh, you were comingin a little bit low on your
volume.
It's there somewhere.
(08:53):
So, okay, now I know when youand I excuse me I know when you
and I spoke earlier Shannon.
I know when you and I spokeearlier, shannon, that I pretty
much guaranteed that.
What's that?
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Test your.
No, I was just agreeing withyou.
Oh, there you go.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
No, that we.
I can hear you better now.
That's good, yeah.
So I know, when you and I spokeearlier, earlier I said that
your list was probably going tobe very different from mine and
spaz's very different.
So then I tell spaz what I toldyou and he was like uh, dude, I
guarantee that you don't haveone album on my list.
(09:40):
So that's actually really cool, that's's really good.
Yeah.
What is strokes man?
What does 1985 mean to you, shannon Jeez?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
it was a big time of
change.
I had just moved, I mean I wasturning 10 at the time, I don't
know man A lot of change.
I had just discovered rock, like the year before in 84.
Right, I mean, I was a bigcountry head and I actually got
(10:15):
a couple of country-ish albumson my list and stuff.
Maybe it might surprise you, itmay not All right, but yeah,
it's just different.
It was a transition and I thinkit shows in the list okay, okay
, cool.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Well, I'm gonna ask
the same question of you, spaz,
I mean to you well, I was 21years old at the time.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I couldn't tell you
this guy high school trying to
find different things to do, andthis music I was listening to
at that time will illustratethis list.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Yeah, that's right,
you were 21.
I'm 20.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Were you still in
college?
Technically, yes, okay, I onlydid three years, so technically,
yes, alright.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
For me.
So, technically, yes, okay, allright, all right, um, and you
know, like for me, uh, you knowwhen I did that, when I did that
, that episode, uh, a littlewhile back, you know,
celebrating 40 years of thesealbums, you know those the out
of the 15 I was thinking tomyself, man, what a huge album.
I remember that album.
(11:25):
I remember the songs on thatalbum and there was just such
good music.
It didn't matter if it was inthe rock space or you know, new,
it's funny, new Wave was kindof phasing out.
New Wave had a very I want towant to say very short life, uh,
span, um, and even, like thenew wave, what's?
Speaker 3 (11:49):
that it still has
some representation in 85,
though.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yes, it did it did,
but right and it does.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
It was.
It was getting less and less, though, and and even some of
those bands were starting totransition a little bit and
maybe change their style to kindof I don't know, maybe keep up
with what was happening, but Ithink that 85 was a really good
year for music and I'm lookingforward to our list.
(12:18):
So, without further ado, whydon't we just get going?
How's that?
Because you got three guys herethat can talk, and so there's
going to be plenty of that, solet's just get everybody going.
By the way, shannon, did youhappen to bring CD covers or
(12:40):
album covers with you?
I did not.
Okay, all right, I'm the onlyone that did.
But don't fret people, it'sokay.
If you're not familiar withsomething that comes up, jot it
down and go look it up.
I mean, I'm sure you have yourphone with you, right, so you
can always look it up, but I didjust because I'm a visual guy
anyway.
So I have.
(13:00):
I have the CD covers of my fiveand they're under the mouse pad
here.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
And on my show log.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
I didn't write them
down because I didn't want Spaz
to see.
I wanted to keep it all I'lltell you a little secret.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Why wouldn't it be a
surprise?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, I have an
honorable mention for 85.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
I've got a couple of
those myself, yeah, so that's
cool, but this one doesn't fitthe criteria.
Oh, all right then.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
All right?
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Well, I'm looking
forward to it.
Oh, because it's an EP, right?
Because?
Speaker 2 (13:32):
it's an EP.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
You know what?
Okay, okay, wait a minute Now.
How many songs were on that EP?
Was it five songs, was it?
Speaker 3 (13:42):
four or five yeah
okay, so it was like a gigolo
calgary girls um I've totallyjust we're crazy from the heat
right yeah, crazy from the heat.
Gigolo was actually two songs, that track is.
He blended them together okayuh, and I forget the last one
okay yeah, there was five.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Okay, yeah, I don, I
don't own that one, but okay,
all right, there's an honorablemention right there.
Do you have an honorablemention for 1985?
I?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
wasn't asked to bring
one.
No, no, you don't have to bringone.
You told me to do a list offive.
I did a list of five.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
You didn't say
honorable mention.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
So I didn't do an
honorable mention.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Okay, sorry, anyway.
Well, you know, I have a coupleof them and actually I didn't
plan on it, it's just when I wasthinking about it, I'm going
and the five, my top five, didn't really take long for me
to come up with, but then Ithought oh, there's this one too
, it's going to have to be anhonorable mention.
(14:44):
Oh my gosh, there's this onetoo, it's going to have to be an
honorable mention.
Oh my gosh, there's this onehere.
It's going to have to be anhonorable mention, you know.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
So there's a couple.
I have 19 on a list and I'mgoing to pick five of them.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
I didn't even go that
far Are you kidding me?
No, so one of my honorablementions and I suppose if the
list was, you know, top seven,it would be on it is is REO
Speedwagon's Wheels Are Turning.
That that was a real good albumand had a couple of real big
(15:21):
hits on it, of course, withCan't Fight this Feeling.
And then there's I Can't Fightthis Feeling, and then there's I
Don't Want to Know.
And you know, what's funny isthat album has a ballad on there
too, and I can't remember whichone it was, but really good
(15:41):
tracks on there.
I should have just grabbed thealbum cover.
I was thinking about it.
Why didn't I just grab it?
But I don't want to say it wasa comeback album, because they
had High Infidelity in 80, slash81.
And then in 82, they releasedGood Trouble, and Good Trouble
did okay, but it wasn'tgangbusters like High, high
(16:04):
infidelity, and then they took alittle bit of time and put
together wheels are turning andit was like they're right back
in the driver's seat again, youknow.
So that was, uh, it was areally strong album, uh.
So it was really kind of one ofmy honorable mentions.
So, uh, you want to get rightinto it.
(16:30):
Everyone's nodding.
There's audio to this.
Okay, so we have to talk thereis sorry.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Yes, you better yes.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
I was actually
Googling the album so I could
see the album covering all thetracks and I was trying to
remember what your uh ballad wasit wasn't.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
It wasn't one wait,
it wasn't one lonely night.
I don't think was it.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
I'll tell you the
list here I had okay, give me
that track listing I do want toknow.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Yeah, through the
window, live every moment gotta
feel oh, that was a good one too.
Yeah, that it wasn't.
Uh, it wasn't a radio single, but that was a good one.
Wheels are turning.
Yeah, one lonely night, that'sokay.
Yeah, yeah, it is one lonelynight, all right, okay.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Then there's rock and
roll star can't fight this
feeling, yep and break his spellokay, and and't Fight this
Feeling.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
There were actually
two videos for that.
There was a.
There was a.
What's that buzzing sound?
There's a buzzing sound likethere's a vibrator on the desk
or something.
Maybe it's my fan, oh okay, allright.
Yeah, it sounded cool, though Iprobably.
(17:45):
Maybe it's my fan, oh okay, alright it sounded cool, though.
Yeah, it sounded like a guitarno, I thought it sounded more
like the Goodyear Blimp wascoming in, or something anyway,
yeah, there were two videos, forcan't fight this feeling.
one was a.
(18:06):
I guess, if you want to call ita not performance a scripted
one.
And then there was aperformance one where they were
in the studio, and that one'sfunny because right at the end,
at the end, the camera justfocuses right in on Kevin.
(18:30):
They're in the studio and he'ssinging into the microphone and
you see dribble right out thecorner of his mouth on the video
.
I had to look that up Only youwould notice that.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Go look it up.
Yes, only you would notice that, only you.
All right, okay, so yes, onlyyou would notice that Only you.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
All, right, okay, so
you know what, shannon, you're
over there and we're over here,so why don't you start this
thing off?
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Sure, like I said,
I've got some weird ones.
We were talking about New Wave.
I'll go with the Smiths' MeetHis Murder.
Yeah, what was that Meet?
Speaker 1 (19:01):
what Smith's meat is
murder.
Yeah, I almost thought what wasthat meat?
What Meat is murder by theSmiths?
Ah what are some of the tracksoff of that one?
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Oh sorry, my dog's
also trying to get my attention.
There's the professor.
I can't remember what else wegot on there.
I got to look it up myself.
I was like, oh yeah, the coveris iconic.
I wish I had it on my case, butit's.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
I'm going to look it
up.
It's got my iPad, yep.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
I got my iPad on my
desk.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
The headmaster ritual
is good what she said.
Well, I wonder.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Okay, let's see meet
his murder, and nowhere fast,
it's been a long time so thosesongs I've heard, uh yeah long
time, let's look it up, can'trock out here.
Time, let's see, boom yeah theyeah.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
The album covers
iconic Cause it says oh yeah,
yeah, hold your with.
The meat is murder in hishelmet?
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah, yep, yep.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
It's like his uh anti
protest or his protest.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Yeah, during the war.
Yep, that's okay.
Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha,gotcha, gotcha.
All right, cool.
So what was it about that albumthat stands out for you?
Speaker 3 (20:30):
Well, actually I was
just turned on to it by a friend
of mine.
His name was Doug.
I actually was texting himbefore I came on.
He goes.
You cannot forget the Smiths.
I'm like oh man, I didn'trealize it was 85.
I thought it was older.
to be honest with you, Justbecause of the picture it's like
Vietnam.
I was thinking probably 80 atthe earliest, but he was like oh
(20:52):
, you can't forget the SmithsIconic band, always great
writing.
May not have been radiodarlings, but they had messages
and they got them across and Ijust figured I'd throw it in for
him.
My friend doug, he just that'slike his favorite album of all
time.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Well then, doug
better watch the episode.
I told him he better so we'llsee yeah, yeah, certainly not
radio darlings, but um, but bigin that punk, new wave, wave,
post-punk genre.
So for us here in SouthernCalifornia we had a radio
station, K-Rock that was rightup, you know that was.
(21:34):
I mean that's, you know.
Smiths were right up theiralley.
Yeah, they'd be playing thatstuff all day.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Our local alternative
station plays them sometimes
here yeah same thing here.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
What about you, Spaz?
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Why are you picking
on?
Speaker 1 (21:50):
me, I'm not picking
on you, because I'm older.
Yeah, because you're the oldestone in the room.
I just let the guests go first.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Okay, my fifth album
is John Cougar Mellencamp's
Scarecrow.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Oh, so good.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Great one, great one,
lonely All Night and what else
I put down here.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
Was he still Cougar
Mellencamp or just Mellencamp?
Then the man was alwaystransitioning.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
That was his first
album that he lost the Cougar.
Yeah, and actually I talkedabout that on the episode.
That was one of the.
That was one of the albums Ifeatured on that.
Uh, uh, albums turning 40 waswas scarecrow dynamite album you
know, what I'm not even gonnasay.
It's an honorable mention for menow.
But, um, yeah, no killer album, and and it was, it was you know
, all due to the fact that youknow he always hated cougar.
(22:51):
He always hated john cougar, yeah, and, and it was, you know,
his management that made him dothat.
But one.
When american fool did what itdid, he started to get a little
bit more say-so in his career.
He brought back Mellencamp forthe next album, which was uh-huh
(23:13):
, but he had to keep that Cougar.
Then that album tore it up.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
I'm done with Cougar
now.
Now, he had all the say-so.
Then it was John Mellencamp.
Yeah, he held all the cardshe's the icon here in.
Indiana.
You know what, speaking ofwhich and yes, he is I would
have bet my house Fortunately Ididn't, and nobody asked me to I
(23:43):
would have bet my house that, when the Super Bowl came to
Indianapolis, that he was goingto play the halftime show.
I thought for sure he was goingto.
And then, of course, whoever itwas I don't even remember the
announcement, but it was Madonna, I believe yeah, whatever pop
act, or something like that.
It was just terrible.
The last good halftime show wasthe who.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Was it?
Yeah, like that it was just, yeah, terrible.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
The last good
halftime show was the who was it
yeah, hey, what's wrong withthe who?
No, that was the last goodhalftime show, let's say,
because that was in 09.
That was when the saints playedthe uh, uh, uh, the uh colts I
stopped watching the halftimeshow.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
It was a simple
anyway, oh but.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
But anyway, okay,
yeah.
So John Cougar with Scarecrow, that's awesome dude, that's such
a good album.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
It's a dynamite.
I like it.
Such a good album.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
All right Now I hope
that you guys kind of based your
lists kind of the same way.
I did Look in 1985, well, lookto this day.
When I take a shining to analbum, a CD, whatever you want
to, you know, can't even sayalbum because I don't have a
(24:55):
turntable, just vinyl, noturntable, nothing to play them
on.
But when I take a shining tosomething, I wear that stuff out
, I play it over and over andover, and this is stuff that I
was playing over and over andover in 1985 and wearing it out.
(25:20):
So that's that's, and not notto say that it isn't, because
this stuff is still dynamite inmy, uh, in my opinion.
So all right.
So I'm going to start withnumber five and um, yeah, here
we go well today, right today, today, right there, kiss asylum
(25:45):
Killer album.
A lot of people say it's one ofthe best, if not the best of the
non-makeup era.
I don't agree, but I still likeit.
They were transitioning alittle bit.
This became a little more, um,you know, in 1983 when they
(26:09):
first took the makeup off, theyreleased lick it up and then
they backed it up with animaleyes.
Both of those albums were werereal heavy leaning into the
metal world a little bit, someof it even thrashy like.
On each album there was, youknow, one, at least one tune
(26:29):
that you could.
You could say, oh, that's gotsome thrash in it, um, uh, but
but, um, kiss asylum, it.
It went more.
It went back more towards, uh,the 70s sound.
It's, it's, it's an 80s sound,but it's, you know, it's got a
(26:50):
lot of 70s type stuff in it.
So you can hear that, but it'llnever be complete 70s with eric
carr on the drum kit, you know.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
But, um, yeah, yeah,
there is a transition to the
hard rock scene.
At the time that was theirtransition and their look
changed.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
They kind of started
glamming it up a little bit here
with this and the album iswonderful.
Kiss's look is terrible, geneSimmons.
When they were out touring thisalbum, gene Simmons looked like
Phyllis Diller.
It just was terrible.
(27:35):
But the album's great.
I love it to pieces.
It's still just so strong.
Honestly, it's got one of thestrongest opening tracks on a
Kiss album period and that'sKing of the Mountain.
It's killer Didn't do much inthe way of top 40 stuff.
(27:57):
It was more service to rockradio.
But there was this little thing, this little channel called MTV
and they had some big videosfrom this album on MTV.
They had Tears Are Falling, which was the biggest song on
the album.
They had All Night, which is agreat song.
That's actually aZeppelin-esque song.
(28:20):
And then, oh, I'm sorry, no, no, no, all Night isn't Radar for
Love, is I'm sorry?
No, no, all night isn't radarfor love, is I'm sorry?
My, my mistake.
And then they had, uh, whowants to be lonely?
I think those are the videosoff of the album.
So that is my number five kissasylum, good stuff, very
interesting, all right.
(28:41):
So that leads us right back toyou, shannon.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Yes, I'm going to go
with George Thorogood and the
Destroyers as Maverick.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
I drink alone.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
I drink alone baby.
You can't do that and justpicture George in a bar and just
drinking, looking pissed off.
Yeah, I think all of this music.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
I look at all of this
music that way George in a bar
and just drinking, lookingpissed off, I think all of this
music I look at all of thismusic that way Bad to the bone.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
I think if you are
not drinking some hard liquor
when listening to GeorgeThorogood, then something's
wrong.
That is the ultimate hardliquor.
Drinking music is GeorgeThorogood, then something's
wrong.
That is the ultimate hardliquor drinking music is George
Thorogood.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
That's a good album
too.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yeah, that's a good
one.
But yeah, that was thehighlight of that album was I
Drink Alone?
Speaker 3 (29:36):
It was.
It mainly sticks out in my mindbecause of memories with my
brother.
He was a big Thorogood fan, hewas like eight years older than
me.
Um, going out to the garagewatching him, he was a big you
know motorhead or whatever.
He would play with the enginesall day long.
George thorogood was alwayscranking bad to the bone or
(29:57):
something.
Yeah, um, and I just rememberfond, I mean that's where I had
my first beer and I justremember fond I mean that's
where I had my first beer.
Was out in the garage with himto that song At 10 years old, at
10 years old.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
I was about ready to
say 10.
All right, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Yeah, and you started
driving at 11, right.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
I think I did at 12,
actually I started driving at 12
, yes.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Oh, that was close.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
I was nowhere near
close yeah, all right, cool.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Okay, all right, I
forgot to write it down.
Uh see, george thorough andwhat was the name of the album?
Again, maverick, maverick.
Okay, all right, cool, you'reup spaz tears for fears, songs
(30:55):
songs from the big chair.
Oh man, everybody wants to rulethe world.
Everybody wants to and shoutand head over heels a few others
too, but big, big songs, bigvideos, especially out here.
Yeah, yeah, and it's so funny,it's that you brought up tears
(31:19):
for fears, songs from the bigchair.
Because you know well, I, Iposted, I posted a video on Tik
TOK promoting tonight's episode, and Tess, my daughter, comments
.
She didn't I, I, I guess in thevideo I'd said something about
hey, you know, comment, put yourout top five here, or whatever
(31:41):
it was.
So Tess didn't give me a topfive, but the one thing that she
said was songs from the bigchair.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
So it's and they had.
They're a good concert band, bythe way, too, because I saw
them in concert.
I don't know 15 years ago.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Yeah, good concert
band and, and and shannon test
is 24, so she's a no, she's ababy and she's calling out that
stuff.
That's good, that's good.
Let's see, I'm writing themdown right here Tears.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
I have two memories
about that album.
It's weird.
Do you remember the Val Kilmermovie Real Genius?
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
They play that at the
end of the movie and it's just
so iconic.
Yeah, when he fills a housefull of popcorn that he lights
on fire from a space laser he'soutside and there's popcorn
flying all over and the villaincomes up and is looking
devastated at his home and youhear tears of fears kicking in
(32:46):
during the credits.
I didn't even realize.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Yeah, I didn't
realize.
Yeah, yeah.
Now I have to go back and seethe movie now Great.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Oh, it's such a great
movie.
Yeah, it'd be nice to go backand watch that movie anyway,
being that Val is no longer withus and he just passed recently.
Just go back and watch a ValKilmer movie, if you've ever
seen the TV show Psych?
Speaker 3 (33:10):
have you ever?
Seen it with James Roday.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
No, no, no, I've
never even heard the show Psych.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
It's P-S-Y-C-H.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah, yeah, oh, Psych
okay.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Yeah, it was on USA
Network for maybe nine or ten
years.
He does a lot of 80 centricstuff in it.
I love that he has the mainsongwriter and guitar player
from tears for fears on a coupleof albums and he has the skit
(33:43):
where this millionaire pays theguy to stay at his house and
just play his music over andover again by the poolside okay
and it's just fantastic okay, let me see, that's roland roland
, I can't remember his last name.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Um, yeah, I can't
remember the last name, but, um,
okay, so, oh, I'm up.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Right number four for
me number four, four, four,
four is this it this is it?
Speaker 1 (34:18):
so good, so so good.
Well, do we have to know brianadams?
Reckless so good, good album,excellent.
Now, this is just an awesomealbum, man, um, coming off of
cuts like a knife, which that, that's really the one that kind
(34:40):
of broke.
Brian adams, um you, he hadbeen around for I don't know a
couple three years prior to thatand, if you're not aware, brian
Adams was like writing andsinging some disco type stuff in
the late 70s and right into theearly 80s.
(35:01):
Stuff that you just, yeah, crazy stuff.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
I've never heard any
of that.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Yeah, he did a song
with um what's her face.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
I know you're going
to say cause it's on this album.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Oh man, the burner
Tina Turner, tina burnout, yeah,
so so you know it's.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
It's 10 tracks.
This one here, like I said, cuts like a knife, breaks Brian
Adams, and this one here, itjust kicks open the door.
And not only are the songsgreat, but he had some big
videos from this album as well.
(35:41):
I mean, it opens up with OneNight Love Affair that was more
of a rock radio.
Uh release, uh, she's onlyhappy when she's dancing.
You know deep track.
And then the first, the firstsingle released, run to you.
Oh man, amazing, ah, it's justjust a killer song.
(36:03):
Um then Heaven, that's theballad.
That was a big song too, andactually Heaven was a holdover.
It was on a soundtrack of aChristopher Atkins movie where
he played a male stripper, liketwo years before this album came
(36:27):
out.
I don't remember who theingenue In the movie was, but it
was.
Christopher Atkins Plays a malestripper, and Heaven was On
that soundtrack.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
I don't even remember
the movie.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Yeah, double check me
please, no, I don't remember.
Otherwise, if I'm wrong, I'llget like all kinds of hate.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Starting with me.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
But then then we had,
uh, so we had run to you.
Then, heaven, then anothergreat that.
I think this was actually thesecond release, which was
somebody.
Yeah, such a cool video tooit's, it's a, you know,
performance video, um.
And then the big, and thiswasn't the biggest song at the
time, but over the years it'sbecome such an iconic and huge
(37:16):
song for Brian, and that'sSummer of 69.
They play it all the time.
Yeah, I mean, you know, rockRadio plays that song from Brian
Adams over just about any othersong in his catalog.
Then you got Kids want to rock.
Um, everywhere we go, the kidswant to rock good one and then,
(37:39):
yes, tremendous song, it's onlylove with tina turner gosh.
What a just an absolute duetyeah, great song.
I mean I just have to listen tothat song just so I can hear,
because and tina sings her, her,you know she does.
She sings her rear end off.
(38:00):
It's just such a cool song.
Yeah, long gone, and then ain'tgonna cry rounds it out and the
sound on it.
Production is great.
You know brian and jim valancewere a great writing duo for
many years.
This one's produced by Brianand Bob Clearmountain.
Bob Clearmountain's a legend.
Everything that BobClearmountain touches it's like
(38:23):
pristine.
It's so good.
So that's me right there.
That's number four for me.
Reckless from Brian Adams.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
That means I'm back
up.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
You are.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Good deal.
I was bringing up my tracklisting here to make sure I
don't miss miss anything on thisnext album.
Okay, it's kicks K I X,midnight dynamite.
Oh yeah, we were just talkingabout them earlier.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
We were Dynamite.
Yeah, yeah, out of Baltimore,maryland.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
Absolutely Well,
close to the home of Boardwalk
Rock going on this weekend.
Yeah, that's right, there is abig yeah, yeah, go ahead.
I love the song sex from thealbum.
I don't know if you've everheard it or not, but it's live.
It's absolutely great.
Whiteman gets the whole crowdjust wrapped up in it.
He just comes out, starts goinganybody want sex?
Speaker 2 (39:27):
it's a way to get a
crowd going and it just has a
good drum beat.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
And he brings out one
of the littlest used
instruments in hard rock, theharmonica.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Oh yeah, he just
wails on it.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Yeah, he just wails
on it.
It's just beautiful.
I mean, it's raunchy though, Imean, but it's great.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
Yeah, he's got some
good ones.
I didn't remember MidnightDynamite, midnight Dynamite.
What are some of the Run downthe track listing on that?
Do you have?
Speaker 3 (40:01):
it Sure.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Do you have it handy
yeah?
Speaker 3 (40:02):
Yeah, I do, I have it
right in front of me.
Yeah, midnight Dynamite, bang, bang, bang, bang, balls of fire
and walking away, cry baby likea rug, red, hot, black and blue
wait is that?
Speaker 1 (40:21):
is that like a rug as
in lies?
Like a rug l-i-e lie, yeah, yeah, okay, oh, yeah right.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Yeah, you got to have
that devil entendre in there.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
Yeah, all right,
continue.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Lay in rubber Okay.
Lay in rubber is another goodone.
Scarlet fever and cold shower.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
Ah, that's a good one
.
Ah, cold shower is such a goodone.
I dig cold shower, that's agood one, I dig, I dig cold
shower, that's a cold showerthat works, that's not a cold
shower.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Yeah, cover your ears
, kids um, okay.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
So oh, I know what
I'm, I'm just jotting some stuff
down.
Alright, go ahead.
Spaz, okay.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
Boingo Boingo's Dead
Man's Party.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
Oh, wow.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Wow, like I said, is
it on your list?
No, no, I think I only know onehit.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
What's that?
I think I only know one hit bythem, so I'm interested in this.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
You don't know Weird
Science.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
Oh, I know Weird
Science.
I know one song.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Yeah, that was Dead
Man's Party and you got Just
Another Day.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
It's just another day
.
It's just another day.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
I had to listen to it
.
Yeah, you got to listen to it,is you?
Speaker 1 (41:51):
yeah, you got to do.
It is weird science on there nomore science is on.
Oh it is okay, so there's threesongs that I know.
On that one, okay, all rightanother great 80s movie too.
I was yeah, yeah, and then Iwas gonna say you can't, you
cannot listen to dead man'sparty and not think of rodney
dangerfield.
And back to school, yeah, youknow come on when he hires his
(42:17):
frat party.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
Yeah, I don't even
remember that I gotta re-watch
that movie.
It's been 30 years since I'veseen it oh, that is.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
Yeah, that's such a
classic.
It is a great, that is such aclassic.
Uh, what was?
What was last last name?
What was his first name?
I'm trying to remember hisfirst name, melon's.
The last name.
I can't remember his first name, doggone it, but yeah we have
to look that up.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
Yeah, we should.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
Okay, so I'm up to
number three and I talked about
this one to number three and Italked about this one, um.
I talked about this one, um,when I did the albums turning 40
and, as a matter of fact, Iincluded it on the thumbnail
because I love this album somuch.
(43:04):
it is just an absolutely killeralbum and that is play deep from
the outfield I figured it'd beon your list this is their debut
album and the first time I sawthe video on mtv for the uh, the
lead track, say it isn't so.
I was just, I was done, blownaway.
(43:25):
I was hooked.
It is so fabulous.
And when you talk about a cleansound, the production on this
is just.
Yeah, I don't even know how todescribe it, but the sound on
the production of this is soclean.
And it's a trio.
(43:47):
You know, tony Lewis on leadvocals and bass, john Spinks on
lead guitar and vocals and alanjackman on drums and in john
spinks.
John spinks, he wrote all thelyrics to all their songs for
the, the entirety of the band.
But he he's saying he wouldsing lead on a like one track
(44:12):
per album, but tony was the onethat did it.
You'll know the song well.
I'll run down the track, say itisn't so, which is actually my
favorite song and I think thatis such a go-to song.
But the one that stands outthat everyone knows is your love
.
Yeah, everyone knows that'sjosie's on a vacation far away.
(44:35):
Sounds familiar.
Speaker 2 (44:36):
Talk it over yeah,
you beat oh yeah, I recognize
that.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
Yeah, I mean, that's
their biggest song, I don't
think it's their best to saythis and so just pills oh, it's
so good um did you see themconcert.
I did, I did see them, I sawthem.
Uh, I saw them in 1989 whenthey were on their voices of
babylon tour.
They opened up for mike and themechanics that was a good show.
(45:04):
I stood right in the frontfriggin row of the orchestra pit
.
I was like it was from wasalmost from me to you from the
stage.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
It was awesome.
You scared the band.
That's what happened.
I almost had.
Speaker 3 (45:23):
Mike and the
Mechanics on my list.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
That was a great
album.
Speaker 3 (45:28):
Their debut album was
85.
It was the big song was SilentRunning that was a great album.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
Their debut album was
85.
Yeah, it was, it was.
What was it?
The big song was Silent Running, but I'm trying to remember the
name of the album Was it justMike and the Mechanics.
I think it was just self-titled.
Speaker 3 (45:39):
Yeah, it was
self-titled, yeah.
Yeah, I'm trying to remember.
Speaker 1 (45:53):
There was another
song, a big song, bigger than
the first one, I think.
Speaker 3 (45:56):
It was their second.
One had the living years on it.
Speaker 1 (45:59):
Yes, yes.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
That's a song close
to my heart, with me and my
father.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
I mean, oh my God,
tearjerker, Absolutely.
And if that doesn't bring up,stir up some emotions in you,
you're completely heartless, youhave all I need is a miracle
all I need is a miracle I justbecause it's a good song and
that you know what's funny isthey had two pauls in the band
(46:26):
that were co-lead singers.
You have paul young and not the.
Every time you go away paulyoung, and then they have paul
carrick from squeeze and theywould trade off lead vocals.
Paul carrick did living yearsand uh, paul, uh, paul young did
all I need is a miracle and hedid some other.
He did some other stuff off ofthe second.
(46:48):
I don't remember all the songshe's saying, but yeah, no,
that's yeah.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
Can you guys still
hear me, yeah, oh, you're just
fine okay good, my microphone,my headset, died, so I'm talking
through the computer, sohopefully it's okay, you're more
clearer.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Nope, actually great,
really good good okay, mike and
the mechanics.
I'm writing that down.
That was so that.
That was that.
Speaker 3 (47:10):
Yeah, writing that
down that was so good that
wasn't a big finalist either butthat was a good album that
didn't make my list, but man, itwas up there.
Like I said, I had 19 to pickfrom and that was one of them.
I'm like gosh.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
Yeah, I had to cross
that out.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
I know we got on Mike
and the Mechanics and I'm
talking about the outfield andthe mechanics.
I'm talking about the outfield.
Well, I've taken all the timeto go through the track listing,
but you know it's check it out, people.
I'm telling you, listen, youshould be writing these just
like I'm writing these down, because what is so cool is,
right now, none of us haverepeated anything.
We all have something different.
(47:46):
I think that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
Not for long there's
got to be something.
Speaker 1 (47:51):
Let's see I I'm
writing some stuff down here, um
, just stuff that's coming to myhead anyway.
So, yeah, I'll feel, play deep.
Great, it's my number three.
All right, you're up again, shannon all right, it was.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
The next two are very
easy for me.
The first one is wasp, the lastcommand oh that was that was
their second release.
Second release I had picked up a, a bend tape with a little you
know cut out of it and it had uhblind in texas on it and it was
(48:27):
just so tongue-in-cheek andfunny but it was rip-roaring.
I don't know how BlackieLawless is just so in
everybody's face at this point.
Oh yeah, he tackles the GreatDepression in a song called
Fistful of Diamonds.
He attacks credit cardcompanies.
(48:47):
He has a song called BallCrusher.
He wrote it by hisex-girlfriend, jack Action,
about action movies, widowmaker.
I don't know if you guys haveheard any of this stuff or not,
but Widowmaker is slow but heavy.
It almost grinds.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
He just talks about
being the hand of doom, like
bringing death to everyonegotcha um, no major up flares
with the band yet, but rightafter this album they started
swishing out members, unfortunately that's when all
the fractures came in right yeah, yeah, I mean there was a lot
of, uh, drugs and alcohol in, ifyou've ever seen the movie the
(49:33):
Decline of Civilization 2.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
Chris Holmes, yeah,
chris Holmes, in the pool, in
the pool with his mom.
Speaker 3 (49:43):
Yeah, his mom was at
the side of the pool watching
him, just pour vodka all overhimself.
Speaker 1 (49:47):
I mean, and he was
just guzzling it, oh my gosh,
yeah.
Yeah, he was tore up.
Oh my gosh, yeah, but it did, did.
Uh, did steve riley leave theband after that album?
Yes, yes, he did, and that'swhen he went to la guns right.
(50:07):
Okay, all gotcha, gotcha,gotcha.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
I got to hear that.
Okay, you are up, mr Spaz, mysecond.
Yeah, number two it's Heart.
Speaker 3 (50:23):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
Oh yeah.
That was the self-titled right, yeah, what about Love and Never
these dreams?
I mean, yeah, five or six songs.
Speaker 1 (50:35):
I had done that and I
talked, I talked about this one
too, and that would right be auh, you know, a an honorable
mention for me on this list, andit was a comeback album for,
for heart, you know, they were,I wouldn't say they were down
and out, but they, they justthey were, uh, their success was
(50:57):
waning a little bit, let's putit that way.
And uh, so they signed a newrecord deal with Capitol records
and then, um, the the recordcompany, or manager is the
record company says, hey, wewant you to start working with
some outside writers, which Anneand Nancy had never done before
(51:19):
, but they weren't crazy aboutit.
But then they completelychanged their look.
They had a total mid-80s look,it was all.
The whole band went throughthat too.
They were almost kind of, itwas almost kind of a colonial
look because there was a lot ofthrill and lace and that kind of
(51:41):
stuff.
But they did, they almostlooked like uh, uh, you know,
like I say, it was a coloniallook.
Speaker 3 (51:48):
But have you ever
heard of the band britney fox?
Yes, yeah, yeah yeah, have youever their very first album
cover?
They almost look like heart.
I got them confused in therecord store like dean davidson
uh teased his hair, I mean itwas the everything.
It was crazy he had the longsleeves.
(52:08):
Look, they looked colonial.
Yeah, they caught some flackfor looking like heart right,
right, I mean yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:15):
And anna nancy, their
hair was like this hot, yeah oh
yeah but they were.
They were completely sexed upand they were.
You know, what's funny is thatthat's their biggest album.
That's the biggest album theircatalog great, great songs.
I don't care who wrote them, great songs and the band did a
great job delivering those songs.
You know, what about love?
(52:36):
Awesome song, never, I thinkthat's a great song.
Speaker 3 (52:39):
Was that still the
original band?
Or had they switched outmembers?
Speaker 1 (52:42):
oh no, that was uh.
No, that wasn't the originalband.
I think denny carmasi was, uhwas on drums.
I think on that one I have togo back and look.
Um, I probably have it in mynotes here.
Um, yeah, I, I don't rememberall.
It was howard, howard lease itwas he.
Was he in the band at that?
(53:03):
I can't remember.
Let me.
Let me look really quick.
Yeah, this is so great, isn'tit people?
Speaker 3 (53:09):
Absolutely.
Let's see, oh, and theyfollowed that up with Bad
Animals, didn't they?
Speaker 1 (53:24):
They did, which,
again, they worked with a lot of
outside writers.
On that one, here's my stuff.
Did I put it in here?
Speaker 3 (53:31):
There it is.
They always get those twoalbums mixed up the self-titled
and Bad Animals because theyboth had a lot of hits.
Speaker 1 (53:37):
Yeah, bad Animals had
Alone, didn't it?
Who Will you Run To?
Alone was the big hit on it.
Alone is just an absolute.
I mean, come on, come on.
Oh geez, that song is killer.
Speaker 2 (53:53):
I have the 45 singles
in that album.
Speaker 1 (53:54):
Yeah, so good.
No I don't have notes.
I have my notes from that showbut I didn't write down who was
in the band.
But I did write down.
That album reached number oneand it is their biggest selling
album over 6 million copiesAin't nothing to sneeze at.
(54:16):
No, absolutely not.
Killer, killer, killer stuffman.
Good job dude, I don't play.
I don't come on your show andgive you calls, no you came to
play is what you did, man, justa pin.
You you came to play is whatyou did, man, just the pin
you're bringing it home at theend of the day
(54:43):
you know you're next, geez, allright.
So we're up to my number two, right?
Yes, number two, sir, numbertwo, all right, look, everyone's
gonna be like what.
But I told you, and this isn'tmy favorite album from this
artist, but these are my topfive from 1985, because I was
just wearing these cassettes outand that's Aldo Nova's third
album, twitch, and this is thealbum that Aldo for many years
(55:10):
hated.
Hated this album because youknow he had.
He had a lot of success with thedebut album sold over 2 million
copies.
He had the one big hit withFantasy.
Then in 83, the following year,he releases uh, subject aldo
(55:31):
nova, and I think it's atremendous album.
I think it's a great follow-upto the, to the debut album, um,
but didn't have any top 40 hits.
He had some radio play, rockradio play with monkey on your
back, um, I don't know if therewas anything else off of that.
That got some rock radio playbut didn't have really any
(55:56):
success with that.
And so now he's going on albumnumber three and the people at
Sony, which that was his recordcompany, they are like, well,
you know what you need to workwith with writers on this one
and so kind of like Hart's thing, and so he did.
(56:18):
He worked with some outsidewriters.
I think it's a really goodalbum.
But I will say this from themoment I put this cassette, I
still remember I was at PointyHills Mall, that's where I
picked it up was at the.
I was at Pointy Hills mall, that's where I picked it up at
the Sam Goody and I popped thecassette into my to my car
stereo and the, the lead track, which was the, the lead single.
(56:42):
Uh, tonight you lift me up.
Um, when it played I was likeokay, and I let it play through
and I was like okay, all right,it didn't have that hard driving
, you know, crunch to it, likeAldo's known for.
(57:04):
This one has a little more popto it, it's a little more
polished, but there's somereally good stuff on it.
Tonight you lift me up, that'sthe lead single Rumors of you.
I dig the song, I really digthe song.
There's a Fiona Apple no, notFiona Apple, I'm sorry, because
(57:27):
that's a totally differentartist.
Fiona apple, I'm sorry, becausethat's, that's totally
different artist fiona.
Um, she has a co-lead vocal onthat track.
Then surrender your heart, areal soft song, but it's, it's a
good one.
I like it.
Uh, if looks could kill, notthe one from heart because they
(57:47):
have a track on on the heartalbum.
If looks could kill, on the samealbum yeah and um, I think that
one actually has.
michael bolton worked on thisone and michael bolton did some
background vocals on this one,on, I think, two songs.
I think lay your love on me forsure and maybe if If Looks
(58:10):
Could Kill.
Was that before he transitioned?
That was yes, that was justbefore he had made his
transition.
I have that debut solo albumafter the band that he was in
with Bruce Kulik in 83.
In with bruce kulik in in 83,the same time that aldo released
(58:38):
um.
Subject michael bolton releasedhis self-titled debut album,
which is more of a rocker album.
It's more in the vein of like abon jovi, yeah, and released
right around the same time.
Bon jovi released their debutalbum as well.
But and John and Aldo actuallygo back to you know they had a
friendship at one time.
You know Aldo worked with Johnearly on and then later John
(59:02):
worked with Aldo, but MichaelBolton was.
He worked with Aldo on this onea little bit before he went
completely adult, contemporary.
It's good, I wore it out.
It is pop, it is pop-ish, Ishould say.
That's why Aldo doesn't like it, because he didn't have as much
(59:23):
control on it.
Aldo did everything previous.
He took a lot of time off.
You know previous Um, and so hetook a lot of time off and he
didn't record for six years.
He let his, he, he let hisrecord contract run out is what
(59:45):
he did.
And then he put out the nextalbum, which was blood on the
bricks, and by that time ourkind of music nobody listened to
anymore because the radiostations were already
transitioning to all the othercrap that came out in late late
91, 92.
So uh, and that's a great album.
Blood on the bricks, but anyway.
So yes, aldo nova twitch, that's my number two.
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
Sorry people, sorry,
not sorry hey, they're a good
band to watch too.
Well, Aldo is.
Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Aldo has been hitting
the road the last couple of
years.
Uh got a great band and I'veseen him.
I've seen him two times in thelast two years.
So if he comes around, uh, ifhe comes around again this year,
I will be right there front andcenter.
So all good stuff.
Anyways, you're up.
(01:00:35):
I don't have a drum roll oranything like that.
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
Number one baby
Number one.
Number one it's kind of beenbeaten a lot by people.
But Iron Maiden's live afterdeath.
I had to cross that one out.
(01:01:00):
Fellas it is.
But Iron Maiden's live afterdeath, it is.
Has one of the most iconicintros from Winston Churchill,
leading into aces high.
Okay, I mean it was almost likea greatest hits out.
Yeah, I mean, even though itwas so early in their career, so
many I mean it had run to thehills on it.
Number of the beast, thetrooper, I believe.
Rhyme of the ancient Marinerson it.
(01:01:22):
There's another one.
It's really big that's on thereRunning free.
A lot of their early big stuffis on there and it they just had
switched over to Nico nicomcbrain and bruce wickinson were
still fairly new and theywanted to show them off.
And bruce just can scream hishead off still to this day, but
(01:01:45):
he was really showing off hischops then yeah, well, wasn't
live after death, wasn't that?
Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
that was okay.
So that was 85, so that hadcame.
That had come after theirfourth album.
That was.
That was basically like thepeace of mind tour, wasn't it?
I thought it was power slave.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
Oh, okay, okay, then
okay yeah, I believe it's the
world enslavement tour Iremember right.
Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
I don't know that, I
don't know the the discography
they have a lot of albums.
They do, they do and do, and youknow that one thing you can say
about Iron Maiden I said this,I don't know, a year or so ago
on a particular episode.
I don't know what I was talkingabout, but the one thing you
can say about Iron Maiden it's,like you know, they'll play
(01:02:27):
arenas here in the United Statesand they'll sell them all out.
They don't need an opening actor anything like that.
They have no trouble sellingtickets.
But outside of the UnitedStates they'll play stadiums.
It's funny, it's kind of atoss-up who's the biggest band
in rock and roll worldwide?
(01:02:47):
Is it Iron Maiden?
Is it Metallica?
And then you got to think abouteven like U2.
You know You're talking to allthese bands.
Look, one band that's wrappingup their tour now ACDC.
These bands don't need anyopening acts at all.
They don't need an opening actto sell tickets.
(01:03:08):
It's better than the Rose.
Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:03:10):
Yeah, and they're
playing stadiums.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
Yeah, not arenas.
Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
Yeah, so anyway, I
think.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
ACDC even had an
album this year.
Was it Fly on the Wall or Flickof the Switch?
I want to say Fly on the Wall.
Speaker 1 (01:03:23):
It was.
Yeah, I mean, look, I think itwas Fly on the Wall.
I think it was Because I on thewall, I had it.
I think it was because, I think, flick of the switch came a
couple years later.
(01:03:43):
Yeah, flying the wall.
Almost put on my list.
They're flying the wall.
Yeah, yeah, flying the wall was85.
Um, okay, so and and you?
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
left the live album
for your number one I.
It's still in rotation in myhome.
Wow, I listen to it all thetime.
Speaker 1 (01:03:52):
Well, see, then
that's a testament of how it
sits with you, absolutely how ithits you.
I love it.
Yeah, okay, so you are up.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Well, one of my
famous drummers, Bill Collins.
I knew it was going to be onyour list.
No Jack it required.
Yeah, Fantastic.
I knew it was going to be onyour list.
No jacket required.
Yeah, I knew.
Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
That was the one
album I knew for sure you were
going to have on your list.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Hey, I had good songs
on there.
You know, Matt could sing, Mattcould play drums and sing
Absolutely.
That's what he did in Genesissame thing.
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Well, you know,
speaking of Bill Collins, you
know it, just you know, genesisis in the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame and of course, phil Collinsis a member of Genesis.
But I honestly think that PhilCollins his solo career much,
(01:04:50):
much bigger, sold many, manymore albums than Genesis, him
being in Genesis.
And to me, phil Collins is aRock and Roll Hall of Fame snub.
I think you and I talked aboutthat one too.
Speaker 3 (01:05:01):
There's a solo artist
.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
Absolutely.
Yeah, I mean no, JacketRequired is certainly his
biggest album.
In fact I want to say it's soldlike 25 million copies.
That was one that was on that40th anniversary show that I did
.
Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
I have a CD.
I have each of the CDs.
I have a cassette one, and Ihave a vinyl, all three of them,
yeah 25 million worldwide.
Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
Yeah, that's quite a
bit Crazy, but it was like his
third solo album and, of course, the first one face value you
know with in the air tonight.
Yeah, great song um isn't thatthe one?
um, I don't care, no more.
I think that was on there too.
You know some big songs not alot of big radio play at the
(01:05:50):
time, but it's like that albumhas really aged well.
Oh yeah, and then it was hello,I must be going.
I think it was the next one,and you know.
And then, man, they justexploded with no jacket required
, that you couldn't go anywhereand not hear ph Collins' song.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
Studio.
They did it at 33 and a halfmonths Studio.
Speaker 1 (01:06:16):
Studio.
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
Does anybody even
know what that means?
Is it a woman's name?
Is it?
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
what.
I think I had heard somethingabout it.
It fit the line of the song andit's supposed to, I guess,
refer to a woman, but it's notreally a name, it's just it fit.
It was something along thoselines.
But but uh, remember, the firstsingle was one more night big
(01:06:46):
song, and then I think susudiowas the second single that was
released, a big song, big video, both videos.
Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
They did a dance
album for that, for Susudio.
Speaker 1 (01:06:58):
I have it Three and a
half.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Great.
It's like 10 minutes long, Ithink.
Speaker 1 (01:07:06):
And then that's got
Don't Lose my Number.
It's got Take Me Home.
That was the big epic song, bigMTV video.
For that one I Don't Pay OneMore Night.
What other songs are on thereOne More Night?
I said that one.
That was the first song becausethat was the first single
(01:07:29):
Giving me the stink eye overhere.
Don't Lose my Number.
Yeah, my number.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Did you get that one?
Speaker 2 (01:07:35):
yeah okay, take me
home.
Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
Yeah, one more night
okay, yeah, I don't remember all
that.
Yeah, but huge, huge album, yeah, that was about.
I knew that was going to be onyour list, I knew it a lot, you
knew.
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
I tell you what I
remember about phil Collins at
that time is you couldn't turnon a movie without his music
being used in the soundtrack.
Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
Absolutely right,
everything Absolutely right.
You know what?
Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
In the 80s and even
into the early 90s, probably the
first half of the 90s.
Phil Collins was just likeKenny Loggins.
Speaker 3 (01:08:10):
I mean yeah, kenny.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
Loggins, you know
with the movie soundtrack guy.
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 3 (01:08:17):
I've never watched it
, but I know he even starred in
a movie, I believe it was calledBuster.
Speaker 2 (01:08:26):
It was about a.
I have heard of it.
I've heard of Buster.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
He did the soundtrack
for it too, and I want to say
he did oh, you Can't Hurry Love,uh-huh.
Speaker 1 (01:08:39):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:08:40):
Yeah, that was on the
soundtrack.
Oh yeah, he's right that wasoff of.
Speaker 1 (01:08:43):
Hello, I Must.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
Be Going.
Yes, he's right, he must haverepurposed it.
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
Then what year was
that movie I'm checking?
Okay, I love the dead air.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
Then he did the
Tarzan soundtrack for Disney.
Speaker 2 (01:08:59):
Yeah, that's correct.
That was huge.
Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
Yeah, sure did.
Yeah, that was the animated one, right?
Speaker 3 (01:09:06):
Yes, was it Son of
man?
Was the big song from that one.
I'm trying to remember what itwas Then he had.
Against All Odds.
Yes, it was the was it son ofman.
What's?
Speaker 1 (01:09:12):
the big song from
that one.
I'm trying to remember whatwhat it was.
Then he had um against all odds.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Yes, that's from the
movie, though, isn't?
Speaker 1 (01:09:18):
it.
Yeah, yeah, that was that was.
I think that was 84.
So I think that was before hedid no jacket required.
That was just a giant song, itwas.
Speaker 3 (01:09:29):
I remember the two
people making out on the beach
to his music.
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
That's all I remember
about it Jeff Bridges and Kelly
LeBrock.
Oh yeah, kelly LeBrock, weirdscience.
Yes, kelly LeBrock Loved her.
Yeah, yeah.
I didn't realize that was justbridges hey, you need to look
(01:10:02):
this one up.
Speaker 3 (01:10:02):
Okay, it's a burt
reynolds movie it's from like
1980.
Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
Sharky's machine yeah
oh, I know it okay.
Yeah, it's so good.
Speaker 1 (01:10:07):
And kelly lebrock's
in that kelly lebrock is in that
one yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:10:11):
Such a good movie.
Burt Reynolds was a bigmainstay in our home.
Speaker 1 (01:10:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
Yeah, Phil Collins
was with Buster.
Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
Buster yeah, did you
get the year on it yet?
Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
I'm looking 1988.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
Oh, okay, Okay, yeah.
Actually no Jacket Required.
That was going to be one of myhonorable mentions.
It was yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:10:38):
It got mentioned.
It was mentioned honorably.
Speaker 1 (01:10:41):
Heart would have been
an honorable mention.
There's one.
Before I get to my number onethere's another honorable
mention and I know I'm leaving acouple of them off and I'm glad
you came up with Scarecrow.
What a tremendous album, but itwas the first album that I
bought on CD, the very first onewhen I got a brand new CD
(01:11:05):
player for home.
Yeah, and that was Dire StraitsBrothers in.
Arms oh yeah, man man, oh man.
What a first off, what a just akiller album.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
It was just very good
.
Speaker 1 (01:11:22):
Killer album.
And you know Mark Knopfler, just, I mean obviously amongst
musicians he gets the adulationand the credit that he deserves,
but not not amongst you knowregular, you know music lovers
and music, you know concertgoers or anything like that.
But mark knopfler, what a justa tremendous guitar player oh
(01:11:47):
yeah, calm down, this is a greatalbum but walk of life is a
fantastic song.
Speaker 3 (01:11:52):
That's probably my
favorite track on the whole
thing.
Speaker 1 (01:11:57):
Obviously the big one
.
And on the album, I love thealbum version of Money for
Nothing.
I love that album version.
I love the story behind thelyrics and being in the
appliance store and all thatcrap, but just a great story.
So much so.
So much so that, um, aftermoney for nothing had come out
(01:12:20):
and you hear the story of howmark knopfler puts the lyrics of
this song together, I startflipping through the tv guide
looking for different things topiece together my own song.
That just meant nothing.
I did, I was flipping throughTV guide, you can do that and I
(01:12:44):
like the album version of Moneyfor Nothing because it's like 10
minutes long.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
So there's no editing
in it or anything.
Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
It's just great.
It's like the beginning.
You get the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
The beginning is very
awesome, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
Absolutely, but it's
a great riff.
And then, yeah, you get thatdrumming.
Oh man Great song, but I thinkmy favorite song on that album
is so Far Away.
I think that's the lead trackon the album.
I can't hear you there, you go,there we go.
(01:13:16):
Yep, now I can hear you.
Uh, yeah, it's a just a slowsong and uh, it's so good, so
good.
Yeah, great album, all right, all right, all right.
Let me get to my number one.
Again.
Wore this sucker out.
Probably bought the cassettethe day it came out.
(01:13:39):
That is Loverboy, loving everyminute of it.
Their fourth release.
Speaker 2 (01:13:48):
I figured it would
make your list.
Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
You knew I was going
to have the Loverboy in here.
Yes, you know what I was afraid.
I didn't want make your list.
You knew I was going to havethe lover boy in here.
Yes, you know what I was afraidand I didn't want to say
anything.
I was afraid you were going tothrow Foreigner Agent Provocator
in there.
Because I thought about it fora second.
But I remembered it wasreleased in December of 84.
That's right.
So I was like no, no, no, no,no, no no, nope, it'll be 85.
Nope, missed it by a month but, yeah, Loving Every Minute of it.
(01:14:12):
It's a good album.
It's not one of Loverboy's best.
It's got a lot of good stuff, Imean, in my estimation, okay,
obviously it's got the titletrack, loving Every Minute of it
, which is still in the set tothis day Steal the Thunder which
is a pretty good song.
(01:14:33):
It's a call out to all theseyoung bands that are trying to
come up now that lover boy isestablished.
They're on their fourth albumand they're like oh, you young
punks, you know, trying to stealour thunder, you know that kind
of thing, um, oh, and this istheir answer.
This next one is the answer toWorking for the Weekend.
(01:14:54):
And it's Friday night, and Idig that song.
The lyrics go Friday, the hookis Friday night, friday night,
just got paid.
No sleep till Monday.
Friday night, friday night, whocares?
It's only money, you know.
And Too Much, too Soon.
(01:15:14):
Just a good album track.
Friday night, friday night, whocares?
It's only money, you know.
Um, and too much, too soon.
Just a good album track.
Lead a double life another goodalbum track.
Then another hit song.
Well, it wasn't really a radiohit.
They had a.
They they did a video.
This one was a co-write withBrian Adams and Jim balance, and
that's it's called dangerousUhous.
That was an MTV video, and thenoh, I skipped this Could Be the
(01:15:37):
Night.
That was the second hit off ofthe album.
That was the ballad.
That was probably a bigger songthan Loving Every Minute of it.
Destination, heartbreak andthen Bullet in the Chamber.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
It's all good stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:15:51):
It's all good stuff.
It's a great album.
It's all good stuff.
Like I said in my ranking ofLoverboy albums, it's not my
number one, but that's my numberone for 1985 because I wore
that sucker out.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
You should tell
Shannon more about the fact that
you actually met the band.
Speaker 1 (01:16:21):
He's met the band.
Well, okay, so, shannon, so youknow, spaz and I we've, we've,
we've known each other since Ithink we were like 11, he was
like 11, I was 10, but we didn'tstart hanging out till we were
like 14.
Okay, yeah and um, so we'veknown each other for a really
long time and we've gone to alot of shows together and even
(01:16:45):
when we didn't go together, weended up at the same shows.
Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16:53):
And Lover boy was
playing.
This was back in 2011, andlover boy was playing at what
was called the LA spring fair.
There's, there's the LA,there's the LA County fair,
which used to be in September ofevery year, and at about two
years ago, they moved it to May.
It's going on right now and, um, so at that time in 2011, they
(01:17:17):
thought let's have this springfair, we'll have the fair two
times.
Well, they had in a differentlocation and then, uh, on a
smaller scale, but we'll, we'llget things ramped up with the
spring fair, and so they had alot of bands out there.
Rick Springfield was one ofthem and lover boy was one, and
so I thought I'm, I'm going tosee lover boy.
(01:17:37):
It was.
It was at this old raceway.
It was called IrwindaleIrwindale speedway, yeah, and
which they tore down yeah, unfortunately, but but it's a
great spot to put an outdoormusic venue.
We have no outdoor music venuesin our market anymore.
(01:17:58):
The greatest one, irvineMeadows, closed down in 2016.
They bulldozed it and putcondos on it, and that thing was
there for years and just thelegendary accent came in and out
of that place.
I've heard of it.
Yeah yeah, irvine Meadows.
Oh, so good.
(01:18:18):
And then they had transitionedto a basically it was a portable
amphitheater and it was calledFive Points Amphitheater and we
actually saw Foreigner andLoverboy a couple of years ago
there and it was one of the lastshows they played there because
they ended up tearing thatplace down so they could put
condos on the property.
(01:18:39):
So there's no outdoor venuesright now in our area and in
Irwindale.
It'd be the perfect spot for anamphitheater.
It'd be perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:18:50):
Well, the conditions
were terrible that day too, and
they still wouldn't perform.
The wind was blowing, it wasreally cold, it was raining cold
, and they were out thereplaying still.
Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
So I bought a.
Yeah, let me get back to thestory.
So I bought the ticket to gosee Loverboy, but they had a
meet and greet, so I bought themeet and greet.
Well, let me back up.
Like three weeks prior to theshow, mike Reno, the lead singer
of Loverboy.
He was co-hosting on a morningradio show in Vancouver, where
(01:19:28):
he's from.
I don't remember how I found outabout it, but that was the
beginning stages when you couldstream radio stations on the
internet from everywhere.
So, you know, I thought, well,I gotta check it out.
I love mike.
So, um, I'm checking it out,I'm listening to it.
He's, he's on and he's doing apretty good job.
He's not like I said, he's justkind of a co-host.
And, um, he starts yeah, hestarts talking about them
(01:19:52):
releasing the band, releasing acouple of singles and and
something else I think theytalked about doing a doing this
show, and so that's how I gotthe tickets.
Well, I'm on the radio station'swebsite and it's like station's
(01:20:16):
website and it's like contactthe, the hosts of the morning
show.
So I click it and I send mikean email.
I'm like, ah, so I email him.
I think I still have the emailsin my email still I can't
delete them.
And, uh, so I email him, basically tell him I'm a fan,
blah blah, blah, whatever it is.
And he gets back to me and sothen they play this, they debut
(01:20:38):
this one single.
A few days later I email him.
Sounds really good, classicLoverboy, blah blah, blah.
You know you guys are going tobe thinking about putting out
another album.
And he says you know, we reallylike recording songs, but
nobody buys our music anymore,so probably not, you know,
whatever.
And so I was like hey, I'mgoing to see you in a couple of
weeks.
(01:20:58):
All right, I'll see you.
So now let's fast forward to thenight of concert.
We do the meet and greet and Itake my CD for the band to sign,
and it's the CD from 2007called Just Getting Started, and
I knew nobody would have it.
So I thought I'm going to takethis one so they can sign it.
(01:21:18):
And I don't remember how manypeople were in this meet and
greet, but everybody was on oneside of the room except me.
I was on this side of the room, don't know why, but I just
stood on that side of the room.
And then in comes the band.
Four guys walked that way.
Mike Reno walked straight overto me, he extends and said, hey,
(01:21:41):
how you doing?
I said, hey, I'm Ben Nice tomeet you.
He's like Ben.
Oh yeah, yeah, I know you yeahso we just start talking and he
just seemed like a really reallycool guy, really nice guy.
We talked for I don't know fiveminutes maybe.
And then they took photos withsome horrible and it's 2011, so
(01:22:02):
what do you expect Some horriblecell phone camera and then
emailed them to everybody.
So I still have the photo, butI'm telling you right now it is
some of the it's.
It's so grainy, it's terrible,it looks like it looks like it
was shot in the seventies.
It's so bad, but yeah, so sothat was cool.
(01:22:24):
And then we go down to ourseats and I go and sit down and
who's right there?
Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
Spaz and wife nancy,
you're right there what are you
guys doing?
We're cold, we're free.
Come on, get the show startednow.
Come on, we gotta hurry out ofhere.
Speaker 1 (01:22:39):
Yeah, that's right
but it was a great show.
They still performed.
They performed their butts off.
It was the same.
