Bill Belichick's contract as head football coach at the University of North Carolina (UNC) is a comprehensive five-year agreement valued at $50 million, running through December 31, 2029. The contract includes a base salary of $1 million annually, supplemented by $9 million in supplemental income, bringing his total annual compensation to $10 million. The first three years of this contract are fully guaranteed, while the final two years are not.
A notable feature of Belichick's contract is the buyout clause, which stipulates that if he terminates the agreement before June 1, 2025, he would owe UNC $10 million. However, if he leaves on or after June 1, 2025, the buyout amount decreases to $1 million, and that's exactly what has happened. What does this mean for Belichick and the Tar Heels?
