James B. “Jim” Hunt Jr., the longtime North Carolina attorney and politician who served four terms as governor, has passed away at the age of 88. He died peacefully on December 18, 2025, at his home in Wilson County, North Carolina. Hunt was the longest-serving governor in the state’s history, holding office for a total of 16 years from 1977 to 1985 and again from 1993 to 2001. He was widely recognized for his advocacy of public education reform and economic development, leaving a lasting legacy on North Carolina’s political and social landscape.
