During the opening round of the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC, Scheffler and fellow golfer Xander Schauffele criticized the decision not to allow players to lift, clean, and place their balls, despite heavy rainfall that left the course soggy. Both players encountered "mud balls," where wet soil adhered to the ball, impacting shot accuracy. On the 16th hole, both players hit into the water after strong tee shots, leading to double bogeys. Scheffler, who finished the round at 2-under par, argued that such conditions created unfair challenges, especially on overseeded fairways .
