This challenge has concluded but you'll still learn some interesting stuff about Warm Up America in this episode.

Sarah, from Warm Up America talks about Made With Love campaign they hold annually and it's mash up with the Crochet Challenge for Warm Up America. Items made and sent in for the challenge were hung in low-income areas, primarily in the Dallas TX area, so anyone walking by who needed them, could keep them for warmth.

The 2019 challenge kicked off in November 2019 and has since concluded. But tune in, learn about how amazing The Warm Up America Foundation is (and why they're the official charity for B.Hooked) and look forward to our next Annual Crochet Challenge for Warm Up America.

SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
You're listening to The BeHooked Podcast, episode
141, with Brittany.

(00:31):
Hey there, welcome to episode141 of the Be Hooked podcast.
And today is a very, veryspecial episode because the
second crochet challenge forWarm Up America is kicking off
in just a couple of days.
So today's episode is completelydevoted to telling you
everything you need to know toparticipate in the challenge and

(00:54):
help answer any questions thatyou might possibly have.
Now, if the Crochet Challengefor Warm Up America is
completely new to you, I'll giveyou the CliffsNotes version
here.
Basically, this is a crochetchallenge that I do here at
BeHooked every single year wherewe do the same project together

(01:14):
and you ship it out to Warm UpAmerica to complete the
challenge.
Now I have some really greatsponsors who help to incentivize
things and provide some reallygreat giveaways.
But the main reason we do thisis to provide a gift for
somebody in need.
So joining me today is Sarahfrom Warm Up America to share

(01:37):
some information about whereyour donations will go to after
completing this challenge.
All right, so here's what youcan expect from today's episode.
We'll first talk about Made WithLove with Sarah from Warm Up
America.
She's going to talk about whatthat is, why it's such a
wonderful thing to get involvedwith, and why we've chosen to

(02:00):
sort of pair up our usualCrochet Challenge for Warm Up
America and Made With Love.
So Sarah will talk about MadeWith Love.
We'll talk about the skills thatare required to complete the
challenge, how to complete thechallenge, the yarn requirements
for the project, the projectsthat you're asked to complete in
order to finish the challenge.

(02:21):
We'll talk a little bit aboutthose and the skills that are
required, and of course, how tosend your items into Warm Up
America, what you'll need toinclude in those packages, and
of course, the giveaways thatyou could potentially win for
completing the challenge.
I know there's a lot ofinformation here, so let's just
get to it.
Sarah, welcome back to the BeHooked podcast.

(02:42):
Thank you for joining me today.

SPEAKER_01 (02:44):
No problem.
Thank you so much for having me,Brittany.

SPEAKER_00 (02:47):
It is an absolute pleasure.
I love this time of year whenwe're organizing for a new
challenge.
And this year is a little bitspecial because it's the first
year we've ever done two in thesame year.
Yes, it is.
So this one is...
ever so slightly different fromthe usual challenge, being that
it corresponds with a reallygreat event that you at Warm Up

(03:11):
America always do every singleyear.
Basically, we're helping toprovide some gifts that you can
use for Made With Love.
So I wanted to bring you on theshow today to talk a little bit
about what Made With Love is,and of course, to run through
all of the challenge details sothere's no questions.
We'll lay it all out here.

(03:31):
And to get everyone excitedabout this because it's such a
wonderful opportunity.

SPEAKER_01 (03:37):
Yeah, so Made With Love, this is something that
Warm Up America does everysingle year in January here in
the Dallas area, which is whereour office is.
And we actually got this ideafrom another charity in Easton,
Pennsylvania.
There's a charity called Chasethe Chill.
And I don't know exactly when, but they started an annual yarn

(04:01):
bombing event where theydistributed, you know, hand
knitted and crocheted scarvesand hats in public places so
that anyone, regardless ofincome or things like that,
could take items for free andkeep themselves warm.
And so about six years ago, westarted our own event here in
Dallas and we've been goingstrong ever since then.

(04:22):
Most years we've done it just inDallas, but actually this year
in 2019 and I guess last winterin 2018, we actually started
expanding the event as well.
So we do our event here inDallas and we have Local
volunteers help us out.
We've also had some of ourreally awesome Warm Up America

(04:43):
volunteers from around thecountry start their own events
in other cities.
This year, we're having it herein Dallas.
We're going to have an event inDes Moines, Iowa, actually
within the next couple weeks.
And then one of our Craft YarnCouncil members, Love Crafts, is
going to do an event in New Yorkwithin the next couple months as
well.
And so it's really cool to seethat we're doing it here and now

(05:05):
other people are starting to doMade with Love events in their
own cities.

SPEAKER_00 (05:09):
That's really interesting.
So the donations, the gifts thatwill be provided as a result of
this challenge, they will gospecifically to you there in the
Dallas area.
Is that correct?

SPEAKER_01 (05:21):
Yes.
So we collect all of the items.
Actually, we have collectedabout 4,500 items so far this
year.
And our goal is 7,500.
So we collect all the items herein our office in Dallas.
And then we work with ourvolunteers and send them a
select amount of whatever theyask us for.

(05:42):
We send the items to people whoare doing this event in other
cities.
And then we typically keep moreitems here in Dallas and send
smaller amounts to other citiesbecause we have been doing it
longer.
So yeah, it's really awesome.
And 7,500 is the highest goalwe've ever had.
And so we hope that each yearwe're able to increase that goal
and send items to even morecities.

SPEAKER_00 (06:03):
So when you hang that many items around a city,
it probably just looks amazing.

SPEAKER_01 (06:09):
Yes, there is a really awesome visual impact.
I mean, people walk by and theyjust see...
people hanging items and theycome up.
It's kind of like if you'reknitting or crocheting in
public.
You know, they're curious andthey want to ask you, like, what
are you doing?
So it's kind of the same whenwe're hanging the items.
People just kind of walk by andsometimes they'll just kind of

(06:31):
look at us like, what are theydoing?
But a lot of people do come upand ask us what we're doing.
And we're able to tell them whatit's all about, that these items
are completely free.
They were handmade by people allover the United States and that
we just want to spread a littlewarmth and love to people who
might need it.

SPEAKER_00 (06:48):
I'm super excited about this.
Now, typically, you accept alltypes of donations, correct?
So this could be like hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, that
sort of thing?

SPEAKER_01 (07:00):
Yes.
So most years that we've donethis event, we just did hats and
scarves.
But within the last couple ofyears, we have actually gotten
feedback from people that we'vegiven these items to because
typically we'll yarn bomb them.
So we'll hang them on trees andfences and things like that.
But a lot of times we'll alsojust directly hand them to

(07:21):
people too.
Sometimes we've done this eventnear homeless shelters.
So there's a lot of peoplearound.
So we'll directly hand the itemsto them.
And a lot of them have startedasking within the last few
years, like, do you have gloves?
Do you have mittens?
And we thought, We don't rightnow, but that's something we're
going to start incorporating.
And so that is why we are addinggloves and mittens so that we

(07:43):
can give people something tokeep their head warm, their neck
warm, and their hands because

SPEAKER_00 (07:47):
it's really important to keep your hands
warm.
It is.
And you know what?
Crochet gloves are...
are a fun challenge.
They were certainly a challengefor me to create as a designer,
but I think it's a fun challengefor somebody to take on who's
looking to improve their skills.
And that's really all we'reabout here at BeHooked.
My mission is to help somebodyget better at their craft, be

(08:08):
that crochet or knitting.
And the gloves that will beincluded in this challenge
are...
easy enough that an experiencedbeginner, we'll say, could do
that as long as you know somebasic stitches.
And we'll talk a little bit moreabout each of the patterns.
But I just wanted to highlightit here.
When you think of gloves, youthink, oh, that's got to be so

(08:29):
incredibly difficult.
And the pattern for thischallenge, they are not
incredibly difficult.
So I'm really excited aboutthose

SPEAKER_01 (08:38):
Yes, and we are so excited as well, obviously, and
so thankful to you, Brittany, because people have started
sending us more gloves, butwe're really excited to have a
challenge specifically includinggloves so that we can start
giving more gloves to peoplebecause, like you said, that is
something that not only theywant gloves, but it's also
something they need.

(08:59):
So, yeah, we're so excited, andwe cannot wait to see all the
awesome gloves that we get.
So something I didn't mentionearlier, but usually when we do
our Made with Love event, we goto areas within the Dallas
Metroplex that are specificallywhere there are populations of
homeless or low income people.
So those are the kinds of peoplethat are specifically going to

(09:20):
be getting these items.
So they're going to be, youknow, obviously everyone who's
participating in the challengeis going to make the items and
they're going to go to people inneed absolutely 100% free.
So that's something that'sreally cool and something that
really, catches people'sattention when they walk by,
especially when they pick one upand see how the yarn feels and
the beautiful colors.

(09:40):
And they say, wait, I can justtake this.
This is free.
And we're like, yeah, someonemade this just for you.
And that really brightens theirday.

SPEAKER_00 (09:49):
Yes.
And you have little tags thatyou include with every gift as
well.
And you'll be doing that for theitems that are received as a
result of this challenge aswell.
And It says, take me, I'm yours.
Is that right?
I love that.
Yeah, that's right.

SPEAKER_01 (10:03):
Yeah.
Yeah.
That, you know, take me, I'myours immediately.
Like, oh, I can just take thisand like, this is mine.
So yeah, once we receive allthese items, we'll have some
local, some awesome localvolunteers come and help us tag
every single item so that theyeach have those nice tags on
them.

SPEAKER_00 (10:21):
Okay.
So participants of the challengeor potential participants here,
here's the most important thingyou need to know.
You will participate in thischallenge.
We'll lay out the details injust a moment.
And the gifts that you make willbe sent to Texas and they will
be distributed as a part of MadeWith Love.
And each of your gifts will beoffered for free to anybody who

(10:45):
needs it.
And that's pretty much the gistof it.
It's very simple.
It's a very easy way to getinvolved, to do something great.
and just be a part of somethingeven bigger than what we do here
with our usual challenges.
All right, so let's talk alittle bit about the skills

(11:07):
required to complete thechallenge.
What I recommend is you havebasic crochet skills and that's
really all you need.
Both of our projects will usethe double crochet stitch
primarily, and some poststitches.
So front post, back post doublecrochets are common stitches
that you would use in ribbing.
So you'll see that in both thehat and the gloves.

(11:30):
And then there's also some minorshaping.
So basic increases, basicdecreases that you would use in
both of those projects.
So familiarity with thesestitches are really helpful, but
they're absolutely not required.
And there will be a tutorial inright and left hand versions
that will walk you through bothof the projects.
Now, another question thatpeople typically have, there are

(11:53):
so many people out there whomake items for donations year
round.
So they might have a stash ofhats or a stash of scarves or
anything like that, that theywant to donate to you for the
Made With Love campaign.
Is this something that they canship to you with their challenge
donations?

(12:13):
Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01 (12:14):
We start collecting items for Made With Love really
kind of in July and August andmore so through the fall.
So, you know, while we're goingto definitely be taking all the
items from this challenge, ifyou do have hats or gloves
laying around or even scarves ormittens, definitely feel free to
send those to us.
I mean, like I mentionedearlier, our goal is 7,500 items
and we are at 4,500 right now.

(12:37):
So we will gladly take any hats, scarves, gloves or mittens that
you have and they willdefinitely be used for you.
Wonderful.

SPEAKER_00 (12:46):
Okay, so that's always a question that comes up.
I'm really glad that you'regoing to accept those as well.
Do you have a deadline?

SPEAKER_01 (12:53):
So yeah, so the deadline for Made With Love
items is December 7th.
you know, it's okay if they comein like a few days after that.
That December 7th deadlinemostly is so that we can get all
of those items tagged.
And then of course, you know, weget into the holidays.
And so we don't have as manyvolunteers that are able to come
in as much during that time.

(13:14):
And then basically, afterChristmas and New Year's, we
have like about a week beforethe event in the middle of
January.
So yeah, that December 7thdeadline just gives us Plenty of
time to make sure that we canget every single item tagged and
that we are ready to go for ourevent.

SPEAKER_00 (13:32):
Perfect.
Okay, so the deadline to shipyour items in, if they are
outside the challenge and forthe challenge.
So the deadline is the same.
December 7th is when you have tohave your items postmarked to
complete the challenge, but alsoif you're including some
additional items that you havealready made or if you want to
make more items.
The deadline is December 7th.

(13:53):
And like you said, it gives youa chance to tag over 7,000
items.
That takes a big team and quitea bit of time.

SPEAKER_01 (14:02):
Yeah.
And of course, I mean, like yousaid, for the challenge, the
items at least need to bepostmarked by December 7th.
That's the same if you haveextra items.
If they're not in our office onDecember 7th, of course, we will
still take them and we willstill use them.

SPEAKER_00 (14:17):
Wonderful.
Okay.
That is good to know as well.
All right.
So we've talked a lot about thechallenge details.
So let's talk about how youcomplete the challenge,
especially if it's new tosomebody listening.
They've never heard of thischallenge.
They've never participatedbefore.
There's really only two stepsinvolved.
You complete both projects, thegloves and the hat, following

(14:38):
the pattern that will beprovided for the challenge.
And you mail them in to Warm UpAmerica there in Texas on or
before the deadline.
And that's really all there isto it.
Now, there's a lot of movingparts, of course.
There are lots of details andlots of questions that circle
about those two steps.
So I want to get into those.
The first thing is the yarnrequirement.

(15:01):
Now, both patterns were writtenand tested with Paintbox Simply
Iran and Lion Brand Heartlandyarn.
So for the most reliableresults...
I recommend that you use one ofthose two options.
And by most reliable results, Imean the sizing, because we've
talked a lot about gauge on thisshow before.
So you know that subtledifferences can be the

(15:25):
difference between somethingthat fits and something that
doesn't.
So if you do decide to make ayarn substitution, I would ask
that you stay within the worstedweight category and that you try
to keep it as close to eitherPaintbox, Simply Ran, or
Heartland as possible.
So there are potentially severalskeins in our stash that could

(15:49):
work for these projects, but Iknow there are certain things
that you look for just to helpit grow.
be more useful to the recipient.
So if somebody would like to usea different yarn, are there any
requirements that you have thatyou would request?

SPEAKER_01 (16:08):
Yeah.
So we don't typically say thatwe have like hard requirements
because we do like to, you know, take any item that someone
donates to us.
We don't ever not use an item, but it is helpful.
Sometimes if people are like, what kind of yarn specifically,
we just suggest that you maybeuse an acrylic yarn or something
that could be washed.

(16:29):
Because sometimes, you know, ifwe notice pet hairs or some kind
of maybe if it's like a smokesmell or something like that, we
have local volunteers that willwash the items.
So that is a generalrecommendation that we have.
It just makes it a little easierfor us to make sure that the
items are going to people andthey don't You know, if they
have like some kind of smell orsomething like that, we can give

(16:52):
them to people and they don'thave that.
We also do ask, you know, sometimes people do like to wash
the items themselves before theysend them to us just because it
makes them feel better.
If you do want to do that, whether it's the hat or gloves
for the challenge, or if youhave any other items that you
want to send to us, we do justask that once you're done
washing the items, just let themcompletely dry before you

(17:15):
actually ship them to us.
Because sometimes if they'restill a little damp, In the
process of shipping, they cankind of get like a weird smell
just because they were stillkind of damp.
So yeah, if you wash, just makesure they're completely dry.
That just kind of helps us onour end.
If it's acrylic, that reallyhelps, but we don't really have
many stipulations, you know, other than those things.

SPEAKER_00 (17:37):
Okay, okay.
So acrylic is helpful.
Washable is helpful.
You can wash your items, but ifyou do, just make sure they're
completely dry before youpackage them up.

SPEAKER_01 (17:48):
Yeah, I guess I can even add to that.
If you do wash the items, evengoing so far as like an
unscented detergent is helpfultoo.
We've just found that that helpsso that there's not any chance
for allergies or something witha scented detergent.

SPEAKER_00 (18:03):
So

SPEAKER_01 (18:03):
even unscented.

SPEAKER_00 (18:05):
Perfect.
Makes sense.
Okay, so those are the simplesteps.
Those are the yarn requirements,my recommendation, your
recommendations.
Now let's talk a little bitabout the projects.
So as you're listening to thisepisode, the day it comes out,
the first of two patterns willbe released on Saturday.

(18:27):
So in two days, Saturday,November 9th at noon Eastern
Standard Time.
The first of those two is thegloves.
They take a little bit longer tocrochet.
just because you mainly have tocrochet two items versus one.
So you'll get a little bit ofextra time to do this.
Now, I already mentioned beforethe types of stitches that are

(18:49):
used.
So having some basic knowledgeof those stitches, as well as
being able to hold the tensionon your yarn and that sort of
thing, you'll be good to go togive them a try.
If you're not too keen onreading patterns, like actually
reading the instructions, ifyou're more of a visual person,
there will be a step-by-stepvideo tutorial in right and

(19:11):
left-handed versions.
Now, the super cool thing aboutthis pattern is there's no
complicated instructions, noadditional instructions for the
right and the left hand.
They look exactly the same onboth sides.
So you complete one, you know, you get it all figured out, the
second one will fly off yourhook because you've already done
it before.

(19:31):
Now it took me about eight hoursto complete one pair of gloves.
So about four hours per glove.
So that's what you can plan for,you know, plus or minus a couple
hours, depending on your crochetspeed.
I tend to crochet pretty slow.
Plus I was really being thoroughin my instructions as I was

(19:52):
working through this.
So I was crocheting a littleslower than normal.
And your prior skills, if youare completely comfortable with
the techniques that we use, thenyou'll have no problems at all.
It might take you a little bitlonger if you're following along
with the tutorial step by step.
So about eight hours.
Again, it uses double crochet, front post and back post double

(20:16):
crochet.
And it also incorporates alittle bit of shaping.
So simple increases, which isreally just putting two double
crochets in the same stitch, anddecreases.
We'll use the double crochet twoand three together, sort of to
shape up the fingers.
Now the additional supply thatyou will need aside from your
yarn for the gloves are somestitch markers.

(20:39):
And these are very highlyrecommended.
When you do the shaping for thehand, you'll have a thumb
gusset, which is where you'llput some increases.
And then you'll do someincreasing on the opposite side.
So kind of like where your pinkyis on your hand.
And I found it really helpful touse stitch markers of different
colors.
That way, as I'm working aroundand around the hand of the

(21:02):
glove, I know, okay, these aregreen stitch markers.
So this is my thumb gusset.
These are orange stitch markers.
So this is like the pinky sideof the hand.
Now there's not a ton of There'snot a ton of increases, so it's
not super complicated.
I don't want to scare you away, but I do recommend that you have

(21:22):
at least four stitch markers intwo different colors,
preferably.
That'll make your life a littlebit easier.
Now, you said before that thegloves were a special request,
and I want to mention that thatis part of why it's required
that you complete both.
Obviously, it's a need that youhave seen in the community.

(21:44):
And that's why we really want toencourage you to maybe, you
know, step outside your comfortzone a little bit if you've
never made gloves before andgive this a try.
You'll be a better crocheter asa result of it.
And you'll give something tosomebody who has asked for it,
who genuinely needs it.
So the other little bit ofdetail there is that the written

(22:07):
instructions are will beavailable on the challenge page,
and that'll be behooked.comslash WUA2019.
There will also be a printablePDF, and the video tutorials
will be available on that pageas well as on my YouTube
channel.
So you'll have easy access tothem on the date, which once

(22:29):
again is November 9th at noonEastern Standard Time.
Now, the second project is alsosomething that you requested,
right?
We always need hats.
Always, yes.
And I know that there's somewonderful hats that I saw in
some of the pictures of pastevents.
And I'm excited about this one.
It's a super basic hat because Iwanted it to be easy and quick

(22:53):
for anybody.
So it is a top-down hat.
So you'll start at the crown, dosome increases, work down to the
band.
which will have a little bit ofribbing.
You'll use double crochetstitches.
There's no decreases here.
There's front post and back postdouble crochets.
So that's something that you canexpect.

(23:15):
And this project took me aboutfour hours to complete.
Now, again, plus or minus acouple hours, depending on your
speed and your skills.
Again, this is a super basicpattern and it's really easy.
The pattern and the tutorialswill be available on the
challenge page as well as on myYouTube channel on November 16th

(23:38):
at noon Eastern Standard Time.
So you'll get your glove patternfirst, you'll get to work
through those, and then thefollowing week you'll have the
hat pattern.
And you're encouraged to make asmany items as you possibly can
or that you want to make.
Because again, you have thatgoal of 7,500.
And Sarah, you said you're at4,500 right now?

(23:58):
Yes, we are.
That's 3,000.
We need to fill up 3,000 items.
Yep.
Now something else you and Ihave sort of discussed behind
the scenes as we're preparingfor this is you want there to be
lots of color, right?
Lots of variety in the itemsthat come.

SPEAKER_01 (24:15):
Yes.
You know, like we talked aboutbefore, when we're hanging up
these items and even handingthem out, it's a really great
visual.
You know, we want people walkingby to stop in their tracks and
look at everything we're doingand, you know, come up to us and
talk to us about it and take anitem.
So definitely we always getitems in all different colors

(24:36):
and we definitely encourage youto make your items in all
different colors.
And even like we talked about,if you have items you've already
made that are, you know, different colors.
It doesn't have to be specificcolors.
We definitely encourage that.

SPEAKER_00 (24:49):
Okay.
Now, because we're encouragingyou to be creative with color,
there is no, you need one skeinor two skeins, no instructions
for that.
What I will provide you is thetotal number of yards that
you'll need for the gloves andfor the hat.
So to make one pair of gloves, you'll need 215 total yards.

(25:13):
And to make one hat, you'll need130 total yards.
Now my gloves and hat set, I usetwo colors.
I use sort of a light gray andlike a really nice sagey green
kind of color.
So I had to get a coupledifferent colors.
skeins in the gray and a fullskein in the green.

(25:34):
Even though I just had a stripe,I didn't have to use all of
that.
So to sort of get away from anypotential confusion, I don't
want you buying more yarn thanwhat you need to buy.
So just keep these totals inmind.
Let's say you want to work withfour different colors.
You'll need to buy or have fourdifferent colors on hand.

(25:56):
But let's say you have a partialskein, you've got something in
your stash, and you know youhave 50 yards.
Well, that's not going to getyou a full project, so you'll
have to use it with anothercolor.
I think the big point that Iwant to hit home here is...
to be creative with color.
Use stripes, use color blocks.
You can do solids if you want.

(26:16):
And both of the yarns that we'veselected for the challenge paint
box, Simply Iran, I don't havethe number off the top of my
head, but there's dozens ofcolors that are available.
And Heartland, there's severaldifferent colors that are
available.
Heartland also adds in anotherelement of just texture.
It's almost like a tonal...

(26:38):
sort of yarn where it's all thesame color for the most part,
but it's almost like speckly.
And I think that would be reallynice.
It's a really soft yarn as well.
Now the tools that you'll need,a six and a half millimeter hook
is the hook that I used toobtain the gauge.
We talk about gauge a lot.
I want to reiterate a little bitof what that means.

(27:01):
The bottom line is to usewhatever hook will provide you
with the measurements that matchthe gauge.
The gauge will be listed in thepattern, so you'll find that on
the dates that we talked aboutpreviously.
The goal is to use whatevercrochet hook will give you that
measurement, so that way thehats and the gloves actually fit

(27:23):
somebody when they're finished.
So once you have your hook sizefigured out, you'll also need
four stitch markers, like Isaid, for the gloves, primarily
to help you with thoseincreasing points.
And then we also use the stitchmarkers to block off the finger
holes.
It's best if you can use twodifferent colors, so two stitch
markers in one color, two stitchmarkers in another color, and

(27:45):
darning needle and somescissors.
And that's really all you need.
Yeah.
And these are probably thingsthat you already have.
So the only thing that you'llpotentially need to go buy is
your yarn and have fun with thecolor choices.
I think that's always the bestpart of these challenges is to
see how every single persontakes the same pattern and makes

(28:08):
it completely different.

SPEAKER_01 (28:09):
Yes.
And speaking of yarn, I wasactually curious.
So I looked up the Paintbox yarnthat you mentioned and the Lion
brand.
So that Paintbox yarn comes in53 different shades.
And then the Heartland yarncomes in 28 different shades.
So that is about 81 differentcolor choices

SPEAKER_00 (28:27):
that you can choose from.
Yes.
You can get super creative.
And in the tutorial, I will showyou how to make a basic color
change.
So you can put it anywherewithin your project.
You can make it look exactlylike mine if you'd like, or you
could do something completelydifferent.
So you'll have that basic skillof knowing how to change and you

(28:48):
get to decide when to change.

SPEAKER_01 (28:50):
That's really fun.
I'm going to be trying thesepatterns too.

SPEAKER_00 (28:55):
Oh, that would be awesome.
I would love to see yours.

SPEAKER_01 (28:58):
I've actually never made gloves.
probably like a lot of thepeople or some of the people
trying this challenge.
So we'll see how it goes.

SPEAKER_00 (29:06):
Yes, I know.
I don't want anyone to be scaredof that because you just don't
see a lot of crochet gloves outof there.
And I can't help but wonder thatthere might be a reason for
that.
And I think the reason isthey're a challenge from a
design standpoint.
They really, really are.
I worked...
many, many, many hours on thesegloves, getting them right,

(29:28):
getting the sizing right, andalso making it easy enough for
anybody to try.
So just give it a try.
I mean, you probably alreadyhave yarn in your stash.
You won't really have anythingto lose.
It's a learning opportunity, soyou're not wasting time if you
decide that you just can't doit.
But I also want to say that thiscommunity...

(29:50):
And the community thatparticipates in these challenges
every single year, they are themost generous people that are on
the planet.
In the Facebook group, you canpost a question.
You can post a picture and say, what did I do wrong here?
And you'll get like severaldifferent people helping you.
So if I'm not able to go in andanswer your question directly,

(30:13):
somebody in the community likelyknows the answer to that
question and they can help youthrough it.

SPEAKER_01 (30:18):
That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00 (30:20):
Yes.
So we'll get to the Facebookgroup information here in just a
little bit.
I want to jump now into theactual completion of the
challenge, which is sending yourfinished projects in to you to
complete the challenge.
So we mentioned before that thedeadline is December 7th, which
means you have to have youritems in a box and at the post

(30:42):
office on December 7th beforethe end of the business day.
the address to send it to.
It's in Carrollton, Texas.
So just so you have an idea ofwhere it's going, the specific
address will be on yourchallenge page.
And I want to say, please, please do not send them to my
address in my newsletter.

(31:03):
Several boxes came to me.
I'm in a completely differentstate.
So it was a little bit costly tosend those items.
to Texas to sort of forward themfrom where I'm at here.
And so I just ask that youplease make sure the address

(31:23):
that's on your package is theaddress that matches the
challenge page in Carrollton,Texas.
Now the things to have includedin your package, there are a
couple of details there.
So we mentioned before that youall put tags on the items before
you hang them out.
Yes.
You will provide those, correct?

(31:45):
So challenge participants, youdon't need to worry about that.
Yes, correct.
There are a couple differentthings that we would like for
you to include in the packagethough.
And this is per package.
So let's say you have tons ofstuff to send and it maybe fills
up two boxes.
Every single box needs to havethese two items within it.

(32:07):
One of them We'll call it thenote.
And that's just a section thattalks a little bit about you.
If you've participated in thechallenge before, you're
familiar with this.
It gives you a chance to say,who you are and you've worked
with yarn for this long andyou've dedicated this many hours
to crocheting this gift andbasically why you love to craft

(32:30):
with yarn.
That will be included in the boxand the volunteers at Warm Up
America who are opening yourpackages will be able to read
that and maybe potentially sharethat if there's a situation
where they're unboxing live, which I know you sometimes do on
your social pages.

SPEAKER_01 (32:49):
Yes, we go live unboxing actually every single
Tuesday at noon Central Time onthe Warm Up America Facebook
page.
So include a note in each boxbecause we open several boxes
each time.
And if there are Evernotes, welove reading them out loud.
And our community who watchesloves hearing your story.

SPEAKER_00 (33:09):
Alrighty.
And then the second thing tohave included in your box is the
entry form.
And the entry form is so youhave a chance at winning one of
the great giveaways that oursponsors have provided.
We did this earlier this yearwhere each item earned you one
entry.
And I think that ran over reallywell.

(33:32):
So we're going to do that againthis year.
One set, so a pair of gloves anda hat, each set that you have
included in your box, will earnyou an entry into the giveaway.
So let's say you're puttingthree sets into one box.

(33:53):
You'll have three entries intothe giveaway and there will be
three entry forms that will needto be filled out.
And the reason you have to dothat is because these entry
forms will be randomly selectedon Warm Up America's Facebook
page live on December 17th.
So if you want an entry into thegiveaway, you have to have one

(34:16):
per set.
It's not per item.
It's per set.
So a pair of gloves and a hatshould have one entry form.
So

SPEAKER_01 (34:26):
the more sets you make, the more chances you have

SPEAKER_00 (34:30):
at winning our awesome prizes.
Exactly.
And the more chances you have ofreaching your goal, which I
think is really what I wouldlike to see happen as a result
of this.

SPEAKER_01 (34:40):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (34:41):
So let's talk about the prizes.
This time around, we have fourprizes that will be awarded
completely at random.
Like I said, it's just adrawing.
So they're going to pull theseentry forms out of a hat.
Not really a hat, but you getthe idea.
And they will be drawing foreach of the four prizes.

(35:01):
One prize donated by our sponsorat Clover is...
And Clover is providing anentire set of Clover Amore
crochet hooks to the winner ofthis particular drawing, which
is pretty awesome.
This is one of the greatestcrochet hook sets that are out
there.
All right.
The second prize that's up forgrabs was provided by Lion

(35:25):
Brand.
And the prize is...
10 skeins of Heartland yarn.
So the yarn that we use for thechallenge, it's delicious yarn.
It's super, super soft.
And it'll be in an assortment ofcolors.
So the winner of this drawingwill get 10 skeins of Heartland
in an assortment of colors.

(35:46):
And you said there are 28.
So you never know what you mightget.
The third prize is donated byLove Crafts.
So Love Crochet, Love Knitting.
And they are shipping 10 skeinsof Paintbox Simply Iran.
And that will be an assortmentof colors as well.

(36:06):
And last but certainly notleast, because this is an
excellent prize, is donated bythe Craft Yarn Council.
And they are providing theCertified Instructors Program 1
and 2.
So this is the full program incrochet or knitting, one or the
other, completely for free.
And it's a really great programbecause it gives you the chance

(36:28):
to solidify the skills that youalready have to make them
better.
And I really like that you'repaired up with somebody who is a
master, like a master crocheter.
And they're the ones who aresort of grading your work.
They're also there to help youthrough the process.
So you make a really greatconnection in the process.

(36:49):
And that, to me, is totallyworth it.
Yeah.
Okay, so with every giveawaycomes the rules for entry.
There are just a few, and I wantto highlight them here so
there's no question.
First of all, to be eligible, you must participate in and
finish the challenge.
So that means you must make atleast one glove and hat set, and

(37:13):
you must send it to Warm UpAmerica in Texas by December
7th.
So that's the first requirement.
The second one is that...
Every set that you send in yourbox, it has to have an entry
form because we can't draw yourname if we don't know what it
is.
So if you send in a box, makesure that every set that's in

(37:33):
that box has an entry formfilled out.
Nobody will see that aside fromyou, the volunteers at Warm Up
America.
Because, you know, we have tohave some information to reach
you.
We need to know where to shipthe items.
We need to know how to get ahold of you.
And it's usually email.
So those two pieces ofinformation will be required.

(37:53):
But just know that they're onlyseen by myself because I'm the
one coordinating with oursponsors to get you the thing.
And to Warm Up America, ofcourse, because they are the
ones who are drawing them.
And...
The winner must also be a U.S.
or Canada resident.
And that is so our sponsors areable to ship to you.

(38:14):
That's pretty much it.
I think that is all therequirements.
Super simple.
Pretty straightforward.
Now, the giveaway I sort ofbreezed over before.
I want to mention it again.
The drawings will be held onFacebook Live on Warm Up
America's Facebook page.
I'll have a link to that in thechallenge page.
But all you have to do is searchWarm Up America and Facebook and

(38:35):
you'll find it.
That will occur on December 17,2019.
Do you have a set time that youtypically go live?

SPEAKER_01 (38:43):
Yes.
So… We go live every Tuesday andit's at noon central time.
So sometimes people, we have alot of people who watch pretty
much every week, but sometimes, especially newer viewers,
sometimes get confused, especially, you know, if you're
in a different time zone.
So it's always noon centraltime.
So on that Tuesday, December17th, it'll also be at noon

(39:07):
central time.
So just if you're in a differenttime zone, just look up that
difference.
It might be one for you or 11 orsomething like that.

SPEAKER_00 (39:14):
Okay.
And also, I know this is aquestion that I would certainly
wonder myself, is do you have tobe on that live to get your
prize if you are drawn?
And the answer to that is no.
That is certainly a fun way togo.
And the anticipation there wasreally fun this past year or
earlier this year when we didit.
But each of those winners, because you are giving us your

(39:37):
contact information, I willemail you.
and let you know that you werethe winner of that prize.
So it'll be very helpful if youmake sure you receive emails
from me, make sure that doesn'tdrop in your spam folder, but
that's how each of the winnerswill be contacted.
That will also happen onDecember 17th.

(39:58):
It'll be after that live, so youcan expect it sometime that day.
If you do not receive an emailfrom me, you were not selected,
you were not drawn for one ofthose prizes, But honestly, this
is really just icing on thecake, the giveaways.
I think so many of theparticipants every year feel so

(40:19):
much joy out of being able to dosomething for somebody else.
Now, speaking of Facebook, Imentioned a couple times that
there is a Facebook group forthe challenge.
I want to keep the Facebookgroup completely dedicated to
participants of the challenge.
Because of that, you have torequest access.

(40:40):
You have to request entry intothat Facebook group.
And I will go in and approve it.
Now, again, that's really notbecause we're discluding
anybody.
We want everyone to participate.
But just so I make sure that thepeople in the group are there
for the challenge, that'll makethe group the best resource for

(41:03):
the participants as possible.
Like I said, so many people usethat group to share pictures to
talk about the challenge to askquestions about the patterns if
maybe they're struggling withsomething and that way you'll
know everyone in that group issort of doing what you're doing

SPEAKER_01 (41:19):
I'll join the group and see all your awesome posts
and yeah I think I mean Warm UpAmerica we have a Facebook group
as well and so I think Facebookgroups are just a really great
resource, like Brittany said, toask questions or even just talk
about or post pictures.
In our experience, people whomake items for charity are very

(41:39):
giving and generous and alsokind.
So I think that group is just anamazing, again, not only
resource if you're havingtrouble or need help, but also
just to encourage people andbuild people up, which is what
this challenge and What WormsAmerica is all about.
So definitely join the group, post pictures of what you're
making.

SPEAKER_00 (41:58):
And I also want to mention too, something else came
to mind.
You don't have to join thegroup.
If you're not on Facebook or ifyou don't want to join the
Facebook group, you absolutelydo not have to.
It is not a requirement for thechallenge.
Just know that it's there as anextra resource for you if you
have questions.
All right.
The last thing I want to mentionis there is one central hub.

(42:20):
that you can go to to find allof this information, everything
that we talked about today, aswell as all of the links, the
patterns, like pretty mucheverything.
It is your place to go foreverything challenge related.
And that's be hooked.com slash wu a two zero one nine.
Sarah, is there anything elsethat you would like to mention

(42:43):
as we sort of wrap up?

SPEAKER_01 (42:44):
Thank you so much.

(43:08):
Certainly appreciate it.
We know that the people whoreceive the items, even though
they're never going to meet you, just know that they appreciate
the time and effort and energythat goes into making these
items.
And they will use them probablyfor years to come and cherish
because I'm sure you know this,Brittany, and a lot of people
listening, but there's justsomething really special and

(43:29):
really cool about an item thatis handmade versus, you know,
something that you could justbuy at a store.
You can see and tell that justenergy went into that and love
went into that.
And we're trying to spread thatlove.
It's the Made With Lovecampaign.
And so we just want to spreadlove and warmth to other people.
And so we appreciate everyonewho will be participating.

SPEAKER_00 (43:48):
Well, I echo that as well.
I want to say a huge thank youto everyone who participates as
well.
I know this time of year, timeis short.
We have a lot of things goingon.
We're busy.
We have the Mm-hmm.

(44:22):
And I think that's great.
That's why I continue to dothese every single year.
They will absolutely continue inthe future because I have a ton
of fun with it.
I know, like I said, theparticipants have a ton of fun
with it.
So we're going to keep going.
Now, the last thing I want tomention, if you plan to
participate or even if you don'tplan to participate, it's a good

(44:42):
idea to follow Warm Up Americaon social.
And that's so you can see someof these unboxings.
I know a lot of participantswill send them in.
pretty quickly.
And you might potentially havesome of that.
You'll probably have informationon the Made With Love campaign
that'll happen in January.

(45:02):
And your social pages areprobably the best place to go to
be in the know when it comes toall of this.

SPEAKER_01 (45:10):
So we actually don't have an Instagram for Warm Up
America right now.
That is something that's in theworks.
People definitely post thingsthat they're making for Warm Up
America.
So you can search hashtag WarmUp America.
I believe there's over athousand posts of just people
who make things for us.
So you can just kind of get anidea of the types of items that
people make and send to us.

(45:32):
Hopefully sometime next year wewill actually have a Warm Up
America Instagram account wherewe kind of you know catalog all
the things we're doing includingthese challenges but the main
place that you can find us onsocial media is Facebook so like
Brittany mentioned earlier ifyou just search Warm Up America
on Facebook you'll find ourFacebook page we put all of our

(45:54):
updates in there we even have apost pinned at the top of that
page, which has all of ourcurrent campaigns, including
Made With Love, if you want tomake any other items for us.
The last thing is that onFacebook as well, we have a
group called Warm Up AmericaMakers.
This group is really similar tothe challenge group that will be

(46:15):
for this challenge specificallythat Brittany makes.
Our Warm Up America Makers groupwas started almost a year ago,
exactly, in November last year.
And this is...
Pretty similar.
It's a place where all of ourvolunteers and people who make
items for us can post thingsthey're making, can ask
questions.
People will join that group andmake a post and say, you know,

(46:35):
hey, I'm from this city in thisstate.
Are there any other makers in myarea?
And they can get connected topeople.
This is just a place that wewant people to feel encouraged
to get information about all ofour campaigns and to talk to
each other.
So if you are interested inmaking items for Warm Up
America, we we honestly weaccept.
any knit or crochet items yearround.

(46:57):
And while we do have specificcampaigns like this challenge
and like Made With Love, wherewe have specific asks, we do
really just accept anything yearround.
We're a yearly ongoing charity.
So that makers group is a greatresource.
It's a great place to askquestions, connect with other
people making items for Warm UpAmerica, and honestly, just to

(47:18):
be encouraged and see the workthat other people are making.

SPEAKER_00 (47:21):
Wonderful.
Well, I will have all of Warm UpAmerica's information,
everything you just mentioned, included in the show notes for
this episode.
So as we wrap up here, I'll havetwo important URLs for you to
check out after hearing today'sepisode.
But I want to say thank you,Sarah, so much.
Thank you for sharing all of thedetails with us here today, for

(47:42):
answering some of thosequestions that we may have
that's on our mind.
And I can't wait to see theresults of this challenge and
hopefully we'll meet your 70Yes.
And thank

SPEAKER_01 (47:55):
you again, Brittany, so much for having me.
We're so excited at Warm UpAmerica to see all the awesome
items that everyone makes.

SPEAKER_00 (48:03):
All right.
That was Sarah from Warm UpAmerica.
Thank you so much, Sarah, forhelping me shed some light on
some of these questions that youmight have as a listener who is
potentially thinking aboutjoining this challenge.
So let's summarize all of theinformation you just heard.
The Crochet Challenge for WarmUp America's projects, the

(48:23):
donations that are created as aresult of this, will go to Warm
Up America and will be a part oftheir Made With Love campaign
that happens in January of 2020.
So your gift will be given tosomebody who really truly needs
it completely for free inJanuary of next year.
To complete the challenge, you'll need to finish at least

(48:46):
one project.
full set of gloves and hat andmail it in to Warm Up America
before December 7th, 2019.
That's the deadline.
Within that package, you'll needto include your entry forms, one
entry form per set.
If you want to have more entriesfor the giveaway, of course.

(49:08):
If you want to opt out of thegiveaways, you don't have to
include an entry form as well.
It's also really helpful if youfill out the second form, the
note, just so Warm Up Americaand its volunteers can read a
little bit about you and whatyou put into creating that gift
for somebody.
These forms will be available toprint on the challenge page.

(49:32):
Although we do have somerecommendations for the yarn and
what the patterns have beentested for, You can use whatever
yarn that you have in your stashand you're encouraged to be
creative with color.
Make stripes or color blocks oranything that you would like.
So all of the information thatyou heard today will be

(49:52):
available on the challenge page.
And that URL, very, veryimportant here, behooked.com
slash WUA2019.
Type that into your browser.
It'll take you to the page whereit has all of the information
you need to participate in andcomplete this challenge.

(50:14):
Sarah mentioned several waysthat you can get involved with
Warm Up America outside of thischallenge, and I will have that
information in the show notespage for today's episode, which
is bhooks.com slash 141.
You'll find a link to thatFacebook group she talked about,
their website where you can seesome of the things that they're

(50:34):
in need of.
Basically, it's a wonderfulorganization to get involved
with.
So I'll have that information onthe show notes page.
And don't forget the challengepage, behooked.com slash
WUA2019.
Now the important dates toremember for this challenge is

(50:54):
the pattern published date forthe gloves, which will be
November 9th at noon EasternStandard Time on the challenge
page and on my YouTube channel.
November 16th is also a date tomark in your calendar.
That's when the hat pattern willbe available on the challenge

(51:15):
page and on my YouTube channel.
The other really important dateto mark in your calendar if you
want to participate is December7th, 2019.
You'll need to have your itemspostmarked on that date in order
to complete the challenge.
All right, that wraps up thisweek's episode of the Be Hooked
podcast.
Thank you so much for joining metoday.

(51:35):
Thank you so, so much forconsidering to participate in
this challenge.
Sarah said that 7,500 is moreitems than they have ever
received.
They're at 4,500 right now.
We need 3,000 items between nowand December 7th.
And I know this community is theone who can pull it off.

(51:56):
All right, I will see you nextweek, my friend.
