Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible
Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today.
1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, andtoday's title is just simply
God is faithful.
God is faithful.
I don't know about you, butthere's been seasons in my life
where it wasn't that Inecessarily doubted if God was
faithful.
I did doubt my ability to waiton his faithfulness but, as

(00:24):
always, we're going to get intothat in a moment, but first, if
you like what we're doing here, make sure you like, share and
subscribe to the YouTube channeland the podcast, Leave us a
five-star review it really doeshelp and be sure to go to the
Bible Breakdown discussion groupon Facebook.
Man, the more we dig, the morewe find, and I would love to
know in the comments on theYouTube video and in the
comments on the YouTube videoand in the comments on the Bible
breakdown discussion, I wantyou to let me know a time when

(00:47):
God was faithful in your life, because it's so important for us
to encourage one another.
Not only do the more we dig,the more we find in God's Word,
but it's important to encourageeach other because Jesus is
coming.
Jesus is coming soon and he isgoing to fulfill His Word and I
can only imagine that, as you'reopening your Bibles with me to
1 Thessalonians, I'm imaginingthat.

(01:08):
But I can only imagine that, aswe are ending this letter, this
was originally written to thechurch at Thessalonica and it
was written in a way for it tobe read out loud.
And so, as Paul is finishing uphis letter that's supposed to
be read out loud, he'sencouraged the people and he
says you know what?
Jesus is coming.

(01:30):
You can almost imagine themgoing.
Man, that's exciting, I can'twait.
All right, paul, what do we dobetween now and then?
We don't know when Jesus isgoing to come.
We just know that he is, andwe've already covered that in
chapters before.
We have no idea when Jesus isgoing to come.
Everyone's got an idea, youknow.
As we said before, I've gotwhat they call pantheology,
which means it's all going topan out in the end.
I don't care when he comes, aslong as he does, and I trust

(01:51):
that he will.
I trust the Lord.
So then what do we do?
And one side of it is we've gotto be faithful.
But then the amazing other sideis that God is going to be
faithful to us.
So if you have your Bibles 1Thessalonians 5,.
I want you to, as we read this, think of this as when they
first got this letter, man, theywere trusting the Lord.

(02:12):
But, man, they were just.
They had been so worried.
What happens for people who diebefore Jesus returns?
What about us who are stillhere?
Like what?
They're just all thesequestions.
And Paul has now answered thesequestions.
So I just almost see there's anexcitement where Paul has been
saying over and over again beencouraged, jesus is coming, be

(02:32):
encouraged, jesus is coming.
And so now they're like okay, what do we do between now and
then?
It may or may not happen in ourlifetime, but what do we do?
And what do we tell the nextgeneration so they'll be ready?
So let's read it with thatmentality of now, what do we do
and how do we occupy until hecomes, you ready?
First, thessalonians, chapter 5,verse 1, says this now,

(02:52):
concerning how and when all thiswill happen.
Dear brothers and sisters, Idon't really need to write to
you, for you know quite wellthat the day of the Lord's
return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night when
people are saying everything ispeaceful and secure.
Then disaster will fall on themas suddenly as a pregnant
woman's labor pains begin andthere will be no escape.

(03:14):
Now pause.
That is one of the things Ialways think is so funny, and I
fell into this a lot too.
But every time that there'ssomething happening, you know,
especially as an Americancitizen, I know we have people
who listen to this from all overthe world.
So you may not see this in yourpart of the world, but in the
United States of America, especially every four years,
because there's an electioncycle that happens every four

(03:35):
years and things look bad andall this stuff.
And it's because things look badthat a lot of times, a lot of
these prophecy preachers willsay you better get ready, it's
looking bad, jesus is gettingready to come.
Well, paul actually just saidwe don't know.
But one of the ways you cantell is when everybody is saying
, hey, it's pretty peaceful,it's pretty, pretty secure.
Then is when things are goingto happen, then is when disaster

(03:59):
is going to fall.
He said actually, it's going tobe a whole lot like a pregnant
woman when she goes into labor.
So just because it looks baddoesn't necessarily mean that's
a sign it could be, but also itcould be when people are going I
don't really need Jesus.
Everything's looking good, soyou really don't ever know.
That's why you got to do whatcomes next.
Verse four says this but youaren't in the dark about these

(04:19):
things, dear brothers andsisters, and you won't be
surprised when the day of theLord comes like a thief, in
other words, coming unexpectedly, for you are all children of
the light and of the day.
We don't belong to the darknessand night.
So be on your guard, not asleeplike the others.
Stay alert and be clear-headed.
Night is the time when peoplesleep and drinkers get drunk,

(04:42):
but let those who live in thelight be clear-headed, protected
by the armor of faith and love, wearing as our helmet the
confidence of our salvation.
Now, if you remember, paul alsotalks about this in his letter
to the church at Ephesus, whenhe was talking about the armor
of God, and he also says thehelmet of salvation is the
confidence of our salvation thatcomes from the Lord.

(05:03):
Verse 9 says this For God choseto save us through our Lord
Jesus Christ, not to pour outHis anger on us.
Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive,
when he returns, we can livewith Him forever.
So encourage each other andbuild each other up, just as you
were already doing.

(05:23):
Now, a couple things with that.
I've had some pushback beforebecause at the end of a lot of
our church services I will sayGod's not mad at you and people
are like absolutely God's mad atyou.
The wrath of God is on youuntil you get.
I'm not saying that sin isn'ton you, you don't need to get
rid of it.
But from this verse, verse ninesays that he came to save us,
not pour out his anger on us.

(05:44):
The wrath of God was poured outon Jesus on the cross, so when
we receive Christ, he takes thatcurse of sin off of us.
But what I also love is that hesays when Christ returns, no
matter what state you findyourself in, you're going to be
okay.
And so if we have Christ as theLord of our lives, it doesn't

(06:04):
matter what happens to us inthis life as far as it concerns
our hope in Christ.
That doesn't mean we're notgoing to have bad days.
It doesn't mean we're not goingto have the worst things happen
to us, but the worst thing isonly a little bit compared to
the eternity we have with Jesus.
Now let's finish this up, verse12.
Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders

(06:25):
in the Lord's work, for theywork hard among you and give you
spiritual guidance.
Show them great respect andwholeheartedly love wholehearted
love because of their work andlive peacefully with each other.
Brothers and sisters, we urgeyou to warn those who are lazy,
encourage those who are timid, take tender care of those who
are weak and be patient witheveryone.

(06:47):
In other words, that's Paul'sway of saying hey, let's help
each other out.
If whatever they need, if youcan help them, help them right.
Verse 15,.
See that no one pays back evilfor evil, but always try to do
good to each other and to allpeople.
Always be joyful, never stoppraying.
Be thankful in allcircumstances for this is God's
will for you who belong toChrist Jesus.

(07:10):
Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
Do not scoff at prophecies, buttest everything that is said.
Hold on to what is good.
Stay away from every kind ofevil.
Now pause again.
Right now, paul is just kind ofjust quickly just rattling off
these things that we need to do,but a couple of them that

(07:31):
sticks out is he says Bethankful in all circumstances
for this is God's will for youwho belong to Christ Jesus.
What's God's will for my life?
Among other things, to alwaysbe thankful.
But I also love where he saysDon't stifle the Holy Spirit.
In other words, if the HolySpirit is speaking to you, most
of the time the way the HolySpirit speaks to us is he

(07:52):
convicts us of sin, he leads usto take next steps.
Many of us look at this as in Idon't want to stifle the Holy
Spirit because I don't want tostop him from using me to do
other things, and that sometimesis the way it is.
But primarily, the things theHoly Spirit does in our lives is
that he leads us closer andcloser to Jesus.
So he's saying never stopgrowing.

(08:13):
And when the Holy Spiritconvicts you about something,
let him convict you, becausewhat he's trying to do is remove
any weakness, any wound in yourlife, so that you can be closer
to God.
So he's saying don't stopgrowing and don't stop allowing
the Holy Spirit to convict youof sin, because he's always
trying to help you.
And then he says don't scoff atprophecies, but test everything

(08:35):
that is said and hold to whatis good.
Now, the reason why that'simportant is because you know,
if you are in an environmentwhere people claim to have
spiritual gifts, well, what Paulis saying is, let them have
their spiritual gifts, but alsolet them understand that they
don't get a free blank checkwith that.
We're going to hold youaccountable.
And if you talk in some kind ofrandom vagary, we're not going

(08:57):
to pay attention to you.
And if you're very specific, well, we're going to pay
attention and we're going tohold you to account.
Test everything that is saidand hold to what is good.
And I think that if more peopleknew that about God actually
saying hey, I want you to usespiritual gifts in that
one-on-one fashion, butunderstand that we're going to

(09:17):
hold you to account.
I think a lot of people that arenervous and timid about the use
of spiritual gifts wouldn't beas nervous and timid because
they realize that God's going tohold this person accountable.
That's why a lot of times, youknow, in my life, I have no
problem with someone who'swilling to engage and feel like
God's using a spiritual gift, but I am going to hold them
accountable.
If you talk in just somevagaries, god might somewhere.

(09:38):
Perhaps I'm not going to payattention because God is
specific, god knows exactly whathe's doing.
But then if he does, then, man,I want to hear everything that
God has.
So I want to encourage you thatif you ever have someone who
they say they have a word fromGod for you, it's okay to step
back and to test it according toGod's word and then, if it be
from the Lord, embrace it andenjoy it and allow God to speak

(10:00):
to you.
And if it's not, then you markthat person as someone who's not
to be trusted.
And when we use that, then weunderstand how God wants to move
in and through us according tohis word.
All right, let's finish it upNow.
May the God of peace make youholy in every way and may your
whole spirit, soul and body bekept blameless until the Lord

(10:21):
Jesus Christ comes again.
God will make this happen, forhe who calls you is faithful.
Dear brothers and sisters, prayfor us, greet all the brothers
and sisters with a sacred kiss, and I command you, in the name
of our Lord, to read this letterto all the brothers and sisters
.
May the grace of our Lord JesusChrist be with you.

(10:42):
I love how he finishes thisletter because, if you remember,
over the past five chaptershe's been talking about a lot of
things staying faithful to Godabout the second coming of
Christ and all this, but then heends the letter with.
God will make this happen.
Your job is to allow him to befaithful, to not give up, and I

(11:02):
want to encourage you with thatas we finish our time together.
I don't know when you are goingto be listening to this.
It's going to come out in 2024.
But, because of the wonderfulgift of technology, this is
going to be around, lord willing, for a really long time.
So I don't know what's going tohappen between the time I'm
first recording this and whenyou're listening to this.
But can I tell you one thingthat's never going to change God

(11:23):
is going to be faithful.
He's never going to run out offaithfulness.
He's always going to befaithful.
And so Paul's answer to how isall this going to happen?
God.
God is the one who is going tohold you up.
God is the one who's going tohelp you take these next steps,
and God is going to be faithful.
So, as we end our time, I wantto encourage you with something
Jesus is coming again.

(11:44):
We don't know how, we don'tknow when.
We just know that he is, andwhen he comes, it's going to be
an amazing moment.
Well, pastor, I don't know whatto do.
I can tell you exactly what todo Allow God to be faithful,
allow him to take care of this.
Don't try to predict it, don'ttry to make it happen any faster
than it's going to, but rather, while you're still here, share

(12:06):
that good news with other peoplethat Jesus loves them, jesus
wants to save them and Jesus iscoming again.
What an amazing testimony forus to carry with us into the
rest of our lives.
Let's pray together.
God, thank you so much for yourword.
Thank you that you are with usand you are for us.
God, as we finish up, 1Thessalonians, what a powerful

(12:28):
message for us today to realize, god, there's so many things
that's going on and, lord, yourword is so full of promises and
sometimes we wonder how arethese things going to happen?
Well, your word tells usthey're going to happen.
Because you're going to makethem happen, lord, the pressure
is on you and it's no pressurefor you to fulfill every one of
your promises.
Lord, we thank you that you arefaithful, we love you and we

(12:53):
celebrate your goodness.
Today, in Jesus' name, we prayamen and amen.
Well, don't forget.
God's word says in 1Thessalonians 5, always be
joyful.
We just read this never stoppraying and be thankful in all
circumstances, for this is God'swill for you who belong to
Christ.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow.
