They're doing a wonderful jobthere and, as always, the more
(00:41):
we dig the, the more we find.
Well, don't forget once of all.
Well, once of all, I don't know.
Don't forget that the overallidea of Daniel is God is in
control, and Daniel is showingus that in multiple ways.
He showed us in the first sixchapters about the miracles that
God was doing, and in the lastseven chapters, he talks to us
(01:03):
about it through the differentvisions of the future that God
gives him and God's still incontrol To which that leans into
yesterday and Daniel 9.
And this was my mistake.
I was reading you know, kind ofreading ahead and getting ready
for the different chapters, andI love the book of Daniel, but
there was something that I saidyesterday that actually happens
today, and that was thatyesterday there was a part where
(01:26):
Daniel is repenting for thethings and the sins of Israel
which is why they were in exile, and then Gabriel comes and he
shares this mission or visionwith him and answers the vision.
And I told you that it took him21 days, and that's where we
get the 21 day fast in the bookof Daniel.
I got those mixed up, so I wantto tell you I'm sorry for that.
(01:46):
It actually happens today whereyou see the 21 days, and I love
this chapter so much because itjust gives us a little bit of a
peek into a world that we haveno idea what's going on, and so
we're going to jump into thisand talk about this, but before
we do that, I love this ideathat God is doing so much more
than we can see, and I feel likethat right now.
(02:08):
If God were to open up ourspiritual eyes, what's going on
all around us would blow ourminds.
Right now, all around us,there's angels and there's
demons.
There's spiritual thingshappening all around us right
now.
It is happening in a differentdimension so our eyes can't see
it, but at the same time it'shappening and we get to be part
(02:29):
of this, even though we don'tsee it with our eyes.
That's why, in Ephesians 6, ittalks about putting on the whole
armor of God.
And if you look at thedifferent pieces of armor, it's
not physical armor, but it'staking on the likeness of Christ
, helmet of salvation, breastplate of righteousness,
(02:51):
belt of truth.
All of that so that we can winin the war we're already part of
.
But there's so many thingshappening that we don't even
know that God protects us.
It reminds me of I remember onetime I had told my girls I was
going to pick them up fromschool.
They were both in elementaryschool and I told them when I
picked them up from school wewere going to have an afternoon
together.
My wife was out of town and wewere going to go have an
afternoon, and that would havemeant going to a park and then
going to have dinner and thengoing to have dessert, just have
(03:12):
an afternoon.
Well, after I let them out ofthe car to go to school, I had
some things I needed to do.
That day.
It was already kind of my dayoff and so I was going to do a
couple things and get ready, butit just seemed like everything
that could go wrong went wrong.
I had forgotten stuff, stuffneeded to get taken care of, and
(03:32):
I can't tell you how many timesover the course of that day I
had just about decided it wasn'tgoing to be able to happen.
I wasn't going to have the timewith them, it just wasn't going
to happen.
It was like fighting tooth andnail just to just to get to that
moment.
And when we got to that momentwhere I picked them up from
school, as far as they knew, everything was fine, like hey
(03:53):
dad, we're so excited, let's,let's go do whatever.
What they didn't know is I hadbeen battling all day long to
make that happen, but theydidn't know.
They just went on, had a goodday.
They didn't understand why dadwas exhausted.
Hey dad, you know cause intheir mind.
I just went home and waited onthem, right, and I wonder how
many times our prayer time islike that, how many times we
pray and we ask God to dosomething, and then he does
(04:15):
something in our life and wejust say thank you Jesus and
move on to the next thing.
But I have no idea thespiritual battles that God has
won in order to make thosethings happen.
So we're going to talk aboutthat today and we're going to
see where the 21 days of Danielfasting comes from in this
chapter.
Okay, you ready, daniel?
Chapter 10, verse 1 says this Inthe third year of the reign of
(04:38):
King Cyrus of Persia.
So once again, another timejump has happened.
Daniel, also known asBelshazzar, had another vision.
This is most likely toward theend of his life.
He understood that the visionconcerned events certain to
happen in the future, times ofwar and great hardship.
When this vision came to me, I,daniel, had been in mourning
(05:02):
for three whole weeks.
That's where 21 days come from.
All that time I had eaten norich food, no meat or wine,
crossed my lips, I used nofragrant lotions until those
three weeks had passed.
Now pause.
So that's where some people saythis.
They say no rich foods.
That usually means no sweets, nothing fancy.
So no sweets, no meat, no wine.
(05:24):
Now other translations that norich food means no sweet breads.
That's where people will getbread.
So no rich food, no meat, nowine, crossed my lip.
That's why a lot of people justsimplify it and there's many
different nuances.
Most people say no meat, nosweets, no bread, drink water.
Just make it simple.
Then not everybody does.
The next one, and that is whenit says no fragrant lotion.
So in other words, um, hedidn't bathe.
(05:50):
So we, we kind of pass that oneup around here.
But listen, we gonna eatcertain foods, but you better
take a bath in jesus name, allright?
So here we go.
Uh, verse four.
And then, on april 23rd, I wasstanding on the bank of the
tigris river and I looked up andsaw a man dressed in linen
clothing, with a belt of puregold around his waist.
His, his body looked like aprecious gem.
His face flashed like lightningand his eyes flamed like
(06:13):
torches.
His arms and feet shone likepolished bronze and his voice
roared like a vast multitude ofpeople.
Only I, daniel, saw the vision.
The men with me saw nothing, but they were suddenly terrified
and ran away to hide.
So I left there all alone tosee this amazing vision.
My strength left me and my facegrew deathly pale.
(06:36):
I felt very weak.
Then I heard the man speak andwhen I heard the sound of his
voice, I fainted and lay therewith my face to the ground.
Just then, a hand touched meand lifted me, still trembling,
with my hands and knees.
To my hands and knees, the mansaid to me Daniel, you are very
precious to God, so listencarefully to what I have to say
(06:58):
to you.
Stand up, for I have been sentto you.
When he said this to me, Istood up, still trembling.
Then he said Don't be afraid, daniel.
Since the first day, you beganto pray for understanding and to
humble yourself before your God.
Your request was heard inheaven and I have come to answer
(07:19):
your prayer, but for 21 days, the spirit prince of the kingdom
of Persia blocked my way.
Then Michael, one of thearchangels, came to help me and
I left him there with the spiritprince of the kingdom of Persia
.
Now I am here to explain whatwill happen to your people in
the future, for this visionconcerns a time yet to come.
(07:43):
While he was speaking to me, Ilooked down at the ground,
unable to say a word.
Then the one who looked like aman touched my lips and I opened
my mouth and began to speak.
I said to the one standing infront of me I am filled with
anguish because of the vision Ihave seen, my Lord, and I am
very weak.
How can someone like me, yourservant, talk to you, my Lord?
(08:05):
My strength is gone.
He replied.
Do you know why?
(08:33):
I have come Soon?
I must return to fight againstthe spirit prince of the kingdom
of Persia, and after thatspirit prince of the kingdom of
Greece will come.
Meanwhile, I will tell you whatis written in the book of truth
no one helps me against thesespirit princes, except Daniel,
(08:53):
your spirit prince.
I have been standing besideDaniel to support and strengthen
him since the first year of thereign of Darius the Mede Wow.
So let me tell you what justhappened.
What happened was is Daniel'sbeen receiving these visions and
he's worried.
He's like listen, I don't knowwhat this is, but I don't see
any good news here, except forit being hard Now, god, I know
(09:15):
you're in control, and all.
Any good news here, except forit being hard now, god, I know
you're in control, and all but.
And so he's wondering what'shappening, and so he just
decides you know what?
The only way I'm going to beable to get the answers is I'm
gonna have to dig a littledeeper.
So he goes through a season ofprayer and fasting, and and then
, after 21 days of no meat, nosweets, no, no bread, drink
water, after 21 days, this, thisangel shows up and he says hey,
(09:38):
the first day you startedpraying, your answer was on its
way, but there was a war in thespirit realm and the prince of
Persia, the spirit prince ofPersia, was trying to stop me,
and so God sent reinforcements, sent the head of the armies of
God, michael, and they've beena-fighting.
And I was able to get throughthe lines of the armies of God,
michael, and they've been afighting.
(09:59):
And I was able to get throughthe lines of the enemy to come
and to tell you what was aboutto happen, and we're going to
get into it in the next finaltwo chapters of Daniel, what he
was going to say to him.
But what can we take away fromthis?
Now, there's a lot in here thatwe could go way into the weeds
on.
So make sure you go to the Biblebreakdown discussion, as we'll
get a little bit deeper intothis and those devotions and
(10:19):
then I would encourage you to dosome study on this, about what
it looks like.
The spirit world is real andthere's angels and there's
unclean spirits, demons.
There's fighting, but thebattle is already won.
God has already won the victory.
It's not a fair fight.
We've already won the victory.
Already won the victory.
It's not a fair fight.
We've already won the victory.
And so make sure you realizethat.
(10:39):
Never let that situation causeany kind of fear or morbid
fascination, but to see thekingdom of God as victorious
over the kingdom of darkness.
The amazing thing is is theBible said the first time you
prayed, daniel, god heard you,god loves you and God was
(10:59):
sending the answer.
Can I tell you that's the samething with us.
The first time you prayed, godheard you, I think.
Sometimes we think that God isalmost like he's kind of holding
the answer to a prayer in frontof us and it's like he's just
if you pray 20 times, I'll giveyou what you want.
It's not like that that we prayand we fast and we seek God and
(11:22):
he sends the answer, and italways comes right on time.
And so there's two maintakeaways I want to share with
you.
And then we're going to praytogether and I'm curious how God
will speak to you through this.
First of all is this Daniel gaveus a pattern in that when you
need to hear from God, sometimesyou can take it to the next
(11:43):
level by not just praying, butpraying and fasting.
Now, once again, here's thething when you fast, it's not as
though you were somehowmanipulating God into answering
your prayer.
Fasting doesn't change God.
It changes us.
It puts us into a place wherewe humble ourselves before God,
and that fasting is a continualworship before God.
(12:05):
I like to think of it like thisI fast something that I really
enjoy, so that every time I wantto do that thing whether it's
eat something, drink coffee, whatever it reminds me of God,
and so like, if I have a cup ofcoffee every morning but I fast
my coffee for a week, then everymorning when I go with that
coffee, I'll go.
You know what, god?
I love you more than that andI'm saying no to that so I can
(12:26):
say yes to more of you, and itputs us in that position where
we can hear God more clearly.
The second thing is this, aswe've been talking about over
the past several days.
God gave Daniel these visions, but he gave them to Daniel over
the course of his life and ifwe're not careful, we can read
the stories in the Bible and wecan miss the thing that these
(12:50):
people walked with God over thecourse of their life, so they
weren't receiving visions anddreams every single day and
every moment of the day, andthey're just living in the
clouds and they just come hometo go to bed at night.
It's not like that.
They're living their life andas they're living their life
with God along the journey andalong the way, god is walking
with them and he uses them andhe fellowships with them over
(13:13):
the course of their life.
And so can I tell you, if you,if we read this and there's that
sense of well, I mean, god didall that in his life.
He didn't do that in my life.
It's because this happened overthe course of his life.
And if you look at your life, over the course of the years of
your life, god has done amazingthings in you and he's going to
do amazing things again.
So don't get impatient or don'tever feel in any way less than
(13:37):
because of what God did in theirlife.
This was over time, and overtime.
God's going to do this in you,and so when you are troubled and
you are worried, let's be likeDaniel.
Let's take it up a notch.
Instead of praying, let's prayand let's fast position ourself
so we can hear from God.
And then, when it takes time,we don't give up.
We keep praying, because weknow that the first time we
(13:59):
prayed, god heard us.
There's a war going onsomewhere.
God's going to win and he'sgoing to bring us what we need
when we need it, and it's goingto be amazing.
Where do you need to keeppraying today?
What in your life do you needto not give up on?
What in your life do you needto add a little fasting to
position yourself so you canhear the voice of God more
clearly, whatever it is, havecourage, take the next step and
(14:21):
know that God has alreadystarted answering your prayer.
Let's pray together right now, god, thank you so much for today
.
Thank you, god, that the veryfirst time we pray, you hear us.
I'm thankful, god, that we cantrust you.
We can trust you in all things.
I pray today, god, that we cantrust you.
We can trust you in all things.
I pray today, god, no matterwhat anybody is going through,
no matter what's happening intheir life, I pray, god, that we
(14:42):
will learn to trust you more.
We'll have the courage to takethe next step and add fasting to
our life.
And God, then, whatever it isyou speak to us to do, give us
the courage to take the nextstep.
We celebrate you right now InJesus' name.
We pray, amen, amen.
Well, god's word said in Daniel, chapter 3,.
These three Hebrew teenagerslooked at the most powerful man
in the world and they said OurGod is able to save us, but even
(15:04):
if he doesn't, we will neverserve your gods.
May we have that kind ofcourage to stand in this world
and say Our God is in control.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow.
For Daniel.
