A tired traveler sits by a well at noon, and everything changes. We walk through John 4 as Jesus breaks cultural barriers, speaks hard truth without malice, and offers living water that turns private shame into public hope. The conversation is simple and bold: a request for a drink, an invitation to eternal life, and a revelation that redirects a lifetime of arguments about where to worship toward how to worship—spirit and truth, heart and honesty.

From the woman’s quick subject changes to Jesus’ steady focus, we trace a pattern worth copying in our own awkward conversations. He names the sin without crushing the sinner. He refuses the detours, yet honors the person. She leaves her jar and brings her village, proving that imperfect testimonies can open doors for others to meet Jesus themselves. We also follow the royal official from Capernaum who begs for his son’s life, receives a word, and discovers that faith can walk miles on a promise before the proof arrives. The timing aligns, the boy recovers, and an entire household believes.

Along the way, we reflect on why Samaria believed early, what “fields ripe for harvest” looks like in ordinary life, and how to balance truth and love when sharing the gospel. Expect practical takeaways: find people where they are, keep the main thing the main thing, and offer hope that addresses both the soul’s thirst and the heart’s fears. If you’re longing for honest clarity and real compassion, this chapter shows a Savior who knows us completely and still draws near.

If this resonates, tap follow, share it with a friend, and drop a comment with the moment that stood out most. Your story might be the invitation someone else needs.

You can find out more at theBibleBreakdown.com.
Now let's grow in God's Wordtogether.
Well, hello, everybody.
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown Podcast with your
host, Pastor Brandon.
Today, John chapter 4.

(00:22):
And if I were to give this atitle, it would be Jesus
Balances Love and Truth.
It's going to be awesome.
Jesus literally calls a ladyout.
He calls her basically a liarand she loves him for it.
I mean, it is amazing.
We're going to jump into that injust a moment.
Before we do, as always, if youlike what we're doing here, help
us build this community.
Like the video, share thisvideo, comment on this video,

(00:43):
and go to our Facebook page andmake sure that you go to Bible
Breakdown Discussion and let usknow what God is doing in your
life.
Have you ever had an awkwardconversation?
Have you ever tried to share thegospel with somebody?
Let us know how it went.
Let us know if it went well.
Let us know even more if itdidn't go well.
Because, man, we want to shareGod's word.
We want to know the good, bad,and the ugly.
Because it is difficult to sharetruth and love at the same time.

(01:05):
And that's exactly what Jesus isgoing to do.
As we saw last week, or excuseme, yesterday in John chapter
three, Jesus shares the gospelwith this elite, with this
scholar, with this person.
And he just blows his mind withtruth bombs.
Well, today, he's going to sharethe life-changing gospel as
again, but this time not with ascholar, but with just a regular

(01:26):
old folks.
People, people that that justright here in the ordinary.
And it's amazing how Jesusbalances this truth.
He doesn't shy away from callingthis lady out, but at the same
time, there's no malice attachedto it.
I think that's what that's whatthe message of the gospel is.
If you think about it, thegospel says you and I are wrong.
It says that we are in sin,we're going to die, and we're

(01:48):
going to go to hell.
That's really bad news.
But that's not all of it.
The good news is, well, the badnews is we know it.
We know that this thing calledlife is not working.
The good news is Jesus said, Icame to fix all that.
And so it's the best news ever, but we got to hear the bad news
before we can know the goodnews.
So it's truth and love.
And that's exactly what Jesus isgoing to do.

(02:09):
So, man, let's jump in.
Let the king do the talking.
All right.
If you got your NLT Bible withyou, you want to open it up to
John chapter 4.
And our NLT Bibles, our coffeecups ready.
Let's dive into this.
I'm going to try not to stop toomany times.
There's just so many good thingshere.
Here we go.
Verse 1.
Jesus knew the Pharisees hadheard that he was baptizing and
making more disciples than John.

(02:30):
Though Jesus himself didn'tbaptize, but his disciples did.
So he left Judea and returned toGalilee.
Listen to this.
He had to go through Samaria onthe way.
Now, what happened is from wherehe was in that area, leaving
Judea and returning to Galilee,he was basically going south,
traveling north.

(02:51):
But in between the two placeswas an area that was occupied by
Samaritans.
Now, Samaritans were people whowere half Jewish, half not
Jewish.
They'd intermarried with some ofthe Canaanite people.
And so they were, it would beconsidered in the Jewish people,
half Jewish, which was a reallybad thing.
You didn't want to be halfJewish.
But their problems went all theway back to when the nation of

(03:11):
Israel was destroyed and theywere led, the Jewish people were
led into captivity.
We're going to get to thateventually in the Old Testament
for 70 years.
They come back, and the peoplewho had stayed, they had
intermarried with some of theother people, and they actually
worked against the returningexiles from rebuilding the city
of Jerusalem, rebuilding thetemple.
Like they were enemies trying tostop them from rebuilding

(03:33):
because since the temple hadbeen destroyed, they had started
worshiping God over on thesemountains.
And so they didn't want thetemple restored because they
were already doing their worshipover here.
And so they stood against thenation of Israel rebuilding
Jerusalem.
Well, they rebuilt anyway, andthat created friction.
Well, then one of the highpriests went and had them burn
down all of those mountainousworship areas.

(03:54):
So there's just all kinds offriction going on.
Where are we supposed toworship?
We're supposed to worship inJerusalem.
You know, are we supposed toworship in this hill country?
Hey, uh, we never went intoexile, so we're kind of better
than you.
No, you're not.
I mean, just all kinds ofcultural issues.
And so what would happen manytimes is the Jewish people would
avoid the area of Samaria andjust stay out of it, but not

(04:16):
Jesus.
Jesus goes straight throughSamaritan territory because he
is on assignment to talk to thislady and later to talk to this
entire village.
So now it's picked back up.
Eventually he came to theSamaritan village of Sikar near
the field of Jacob, gave to hisson Joseph.
Jacob's well was there, andJesus, tired from the long walk,

(04:37):
sat wearily beside the wellabout noontime.
Soon a Samaritan woman came todraw water, and Jesus said to
her, Please give me a drink.
He was alone at the time becausethe disciples had gone to the
village to buy some food.
Now, something's veryinteresting is this a very hot
climate.
You would never go get water atnoontime unless you're trying to

(04:59):
not be seen.
The two times when most of theladies that were kind of taking
care of their households wouldgo get water is early in the
morning and late in theafternoon when it was cooler.
And what they would also do isit would be kind of a time when
they would check up with oneanother, see how things were
going, and then going back home.
So she waited until the middleof those two times.
When it'd be hot outside, no onewould be around because she's

(05:22):
probably trying to avoid peopleas much as possible.
So the problem is you can'tavoid Jesus.
You may have 99 problems, butJesus ain't one of them.
The Bible says in verse 9, thewoman was surprised, for Jews
refused to have anything to dowith Samaritans, because what we
talked about earlier, she saidto Jesus, You're a Jew, and I am
a Samaritan woman.
Why are you asking me for adrink?

(05:44):
Jesus replied, If you only knewthe gift of God, that the gift
God has for you and who isspeaking to you, you would ask
me, and I would give you livingwater.
But sir, you don't have a ropeor a bucket, she said, and this
well is very deep.
Where would you get this livingwater?
And besides, do you think you'regreater than our ancestor Jacob
who gave us this well?

(06:04):
How can you offer better waterthan he and his sons and his
animals enjoyed?
Jesus replied, Anyone who drinksthis water will soon become
thirsty again.
But whoever drinks the waterthat I give will never be
thirsty again.
It will become a fresh, bubblingspring within them, giving them
eternal life.
Please, sir, the woman said, give me this water, then I will

(06:27):
never be thirsty again, and Iwon't have to come here and get
this water.
Go get your husband, Jesus toldher.
Ah, I don't have a husband, thewoman replied.
Jesus said, You're right.
You don't have a husband, foryou have had five husbands.
And you ain't even married tothat fool you shacking up with
right now.
That's not what he said.

(06:49):
You are not married to the manyou are living with right now.
Jesus is nicer than I am.
You certainly spoke the truth.
Sir, this woman said.
She's changing the subject.
You must be a prophet.
So tell me, why is it that youJews insist that Jerusalem is
the only place to worship?
Well, we Samaritans claim it ishere at Mount Gerizim, where our
ancestors worshipped.

(07:10):
Remember why I told you earlier?
She immediately tries tosidestep this whole deal by her
shacking up with somebody andgoes to a political thing.
Hey, you Jews say we should beworshiping in Jerusalem.
We think we should worship MountGerizim.
What do you think about thatwhole political debate, right?
Like she's just trying to changethe subject.
Jesus brings her right backagain.
Believe me, dear woman, the timeis coming when it will no longer

(07:31):
matter where you worship theFather, on this mountain or in
Jerusalem.
You Samaritans know very littleabout the one that you worship.
While we Jews know all abouthim, for salvation comes through
the Jews.
But the time is coming.
Indeed, it's here now, when trueworshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and in truth.
Because the Father is lookingfor those who will worship him

(07:53):
that way.
God is spirit, and those whoworship him must worship in
spirit and in truth.
She didn't like that answer, soshe sideswipes again.
I know that Messiah is coming, the one who is called Christ.
And when he comes, he willexplain everything to us.
So that's kind of that answerof, hey, you know, should you be
Democrat or Republican?

(08:14):
Should you do this?
You know, one day we're all justgoing to find a way to get
along.
She's just trying to come upwith something else.
But then Jesus rocks her boatand says, This I am that
Messiah.
I am that one.
And this is the first time hesays the I am statement.
We're going to get into whatthat I am statement is the next
time he says it, but trust me,it is amazing.

(08:34):
Jesus then, just then hisdisciples came back.
They were shocked to find himtalking to a woman.
But none of them had the nerveto ask, What do you want with
her?
Why are you talking to her?
The woman left her water jarbeside the well and ran back to
the village, telling everyone,Come and see a man who told me
everything I ever did.

(08:55):
Could this possibly be theMessiah?
So the people came streamingfrom the village to see him.
Meanwhile, the disciples wereurging Jesus, Rabbi, eat
something.
But Jesus replied, I have a kindof food you know nothing about.
Did someone bring him some foodwhile we were gone?
The disciples asked each other.
Then Jesus explained, Mynourishment comes from doing the

(09:16):
will of God who sent me and fromfinishing his work.
You know the saying, four monthsbetween planting and harvest, I
say, wake up and look around.
The fields are already ripe forharvest.
The harvesters are paid goodwages, and the fruit of their
harvest is people brought intoeternal life.
What joy awaits both planter andharvester alike?

(09:39):
You know the saying, one plantsand another harvest, and it's
true.
I sent you to harvest where youdidn't plant.
Others had already done thework, and now you will get to
gather the harvest.
Other words, what he's sayingis, all these people are so
desperate and they're so lookingfor eternal life, they don't
even know what they're lookingfor.
In other words, they are readyto hear the gospel.
Guys, we're about to party.

(10:00):
We're about to see some lifehappen up in here.
Verse 39 says, Many Samaritansfrom the village believed in
Jesus because the woman hadsaid, He told me everything I
ever did.
When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their
village.
So he stayed there two days, long enough for many more to
hear the message and belief.
Then they said to the woman, Nowwe believe, not just because of

(10:22):
what you told us, but because wehave heard him ourselves, and we
know that he is indeed theSavior of the world.
Isn't that amazing?
That it wasn't the Jews thatbelieved him first.
It was the Samaritans, it wasthe outcast, because he didn't
move by them.
And Jesus actually laid out forus a template on how to share
the gospel with people who wereunsaved.
And that is number one, he foundher.

(10:45):
Number two, he pointed to thetruth, which is she was in sin.
Number three, he didn't let herskirt around it, but at the same
time, he didn't disrespect her.
And number four, he offered herhope.
The very best thing that we cando is to not skirt around the
truth.
And the truth is we are allsinners, we're all going to hell
unless we receive the gospel.

(11:05):
But then the good news is thereis a gospel, and Jesus can save
all of us.
Verse 43, at the end of twodays, Jesus went on to Galilee.
He himself had said that aprophet is not honored in his
hometown.
Yet the Galileans welcomed him,for they had been in Jerusalem
at the Passover celebration andhad seen everything he did
there.
And as he traveled throughGalilee, he came to Cana, where

(11:27):
he had turned the water intowine, and there was a government
official in the nearby Capernaumwho was sick, or his son was
very sick.
When he heard that Jesus hadcome from Judea to Galilee, he
went and begged Jesus to come toCapernaum to heal his son, who
was about to die.
Jesus asked, Will you neverbelieve in me unless you see
miraculous signs and wonders?

(11:47):
The official pleaded, Lord, please come now before my little
boy dies.
Then Jesus told him, Go on backhome.
Your son will live.
And the man believed that Jesussaid and started what he said
and started home.
While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him
with the news that his son wasalive and well.
He asked them when the boy hadbegun to get better, and they

(12:08):
replied, Yesterday afternoon, atone o'clock, his fever fever
suddenly disappeared.
Then the father realized thatthat was the very time Jesus had
told him, Your son will live.
And his entire householdbelieved in Jesus.
This was the second miraculoussign that Jesus did in Galilee
after coming from Judea.

(12:29):
Remember, Jesus is going to doseven significant signs that all
point to, not just a man, but heis the Savior and the King of
the whole world.
Now I want to ask you aquestion.
Other words, he's saying, youmay have 99 problems, but Jesus

(12:50):
ain't one.
Well, what can we get out ofthis chapter?
Well, to me, what I love aboutthis is that Jesus knows us.
He knew.
That lady done been shacking upat everybody.
Everybody and their uncle doneknow naught about that lady.
But Jesus didn't go to the nextwell.
He went there.
Jesus knows us, yet he seeksafter us.

(13:10):
If you have ever wondered inyour life if you have value, if
you've ever wondered if youmatter, you know what?
I don't know if you matter toyour neighbor.
I don't know if you matter towhoever it is that you're trying
so desperately to get theirattention.
But can I tell you, you matterto the only one that matters.
You matter to the King of Kingsand the Lord of Lords.

(13:31):
Jesus entered into time andspace, born of a virgin, lived
33 years, died on a cross, roseagain, did all of that for you.
God's word says in Romans 5.8,God demonstrated his great love
toward us in that while we werestill sinners, he died for us.
While we were still sinners, hecame on a rescue mission for us.

(13:53):
And if that doesn't fill youwith joy, you need to rewind it
and listen to it again.
Let me pray for us and thenwe'll be done for today.
Father, thank you so much.
Thank you for sending your son.
Jesus, thank you.
That you are the King of kingsand the Lord of Lords.
We may have 99 problems, but youare not one of them.
And we celebrate you today.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
Don't forget that John 20 saysthat these things were written

(14:16):
that you may continue to believethat Jesus is God and that
believing in him we can havelife by the power of his name.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow for Johnchapter five.
