Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, everybody,
welcome back to the Bible
Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon.
Today, mark, chapter 3, andtoday's title is the
Unforgivable Sin.
The Unforgivable Sin, can Itell you as a pastor.
There are a few differentverses that I have heard so much
.
And I get it, I absolutely getit.
(00:20):
So there's no shame here, there's no frustration here.
It's just I've heard them somuch that I just have made blog
posts about them and, trying tobe as respectful as possible,
I'll say hey, listen, why don'tyou just go to my blog, type
this up, because it'll help you, because I don't remember right
now, but I want to be helpful.
And one of them is a versewe're going to cover today, and
(00:45):
that is what is the unforgivablesin, and here's always the
thing it's have I committed it?
Am I going to hell?
And I don't know Right, and ifyou've never thought that, then
please, throughout this chapter, just polish your halo and give
the rest of us a break.
But for the most of the rest ofus, if you've been around the
things of God for very long, you've come across this verse
and be like, oh snap, am I goingto hell now?
We're going to cover that injust a few moments.
But before we do that, asalways, make sure you take a
(01:05):
moment like share, subscribe toYouTube channel and the podcast.
Make sure you leave us a fivestar on the podcast.
It really does help, and I wantto tell you, make sure you go
to the Bible Breakdowndiscussion on Facebook, and you
can get all of that atthebiblebreakdowncom.
I want to tell you though I havebeen someone's told me this, I
did not realize this, but I needyour help with something, and
that is this If you listen onApple podcast, then definitely
(01:30):
make sure you leave us afive-star review.
Make sure you leave us a review.
But here's the thing Some ofyou have told me that you don't
listen to Apple podcast.
You listen on Spotify.
You listen on some I mean justjust many different kinds.
We have it on Amazon Music nowit is on all these different
places or you have an app andyou can rate it on the app.
(01:50):
Whatever you have, if you don'tmind, make sure you rate us a
five-star review.
If you don't want to rate afive-star review, don't rate us.
But if you don't mind, becausesome of these different apps,
what happens is when you rate uslike that, then it brings it up
in their search engines alittle bit better and that helps
.
We're not the only Biblebreakdown podcast like title out
there.
And matter of fact okay, quickstory before we get into this
(02:13):
very, very quick story that oneof the reasons why we call
ourself the Bible breakdownpodcast is because once upon a
time, long time ago, I waslistening to a podcast and they
were not they called themselvesthat, but they were not
interpreting the Bible correctly, according to a proper biblical
interpretation.
They were doing great harm tothe text and it made me so angry
(02:37):
that I was like, okay, well, yeah, I'm going to do what I can
to be part of fixing this.
And so one of the reasons isbecause, uh, why we tell you to
to make sure to leave us afive-star review is it helps us
to get recognized so that we canhelp people understand the
bible more.
Okay, all right, we've beenwith us past couple days.
We are going through the gospelof mark, one chapter at a time,
(02:59):
and what we have said is thegospel of mark, basically, is
the gospel in motion.
It's four gospels.
The gospel of Mark really showsJesus in action Forty different
times.
It uses the word immediately, then it also uses instantly and
quickly and it just shows Jesuswith the people constantly in
motion.
And in chapter 1, we just doveinto the story, just got going,
(03:22):
and what we were telling youbeforehand is Mark got all of
this from Peter.
He was a translator for Peterwhen Peter was preaching in Rome
and you can see this is exactlywhat Peter would do.
He's probably a very highmotivated, just this live wire
preacher going and then thishappened and then this happened
and so we call it gospel emotion, because Jesus is always in
(03:43):
motion and we're going to seethat today in chapter three and
he's going to cover one of themost you know, asked about
verses in the entire Bible.
So let's get there.
Let's start with chapter three, verse one, and let's see what
God's word says.
Here we go.
Jesus went into the synagogueagain and noticed a man with a
deformed hand.
Since it was the Sabbath, jesus, enemies watched him closely.
(04:05):
If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of
working on the Sabbath.
Jesus said to the man with thedeformed hand come and stand in
front of everyone.
Then he turned to the criticsand said does the law permit
good deeds on the Sabbath or isit the day of doing evil?
Is it the day to save life orto destroy it?
But they wouldn't answer him.
(04:26):
He looked around at themangrily and he was deeply
saddened by their hard hearts.
Then he said to the man Holdout your hand.
So the man held out his handand it was restored At once.
The Pharisees went away and metwith the supporters of Herod to
plot how to kill Jesus.
Jesus went out to the lake withhis disciples and a large crowd
(04:48):
followed him.
They then called excuse me.
They then wait a minute, let metry this again.
They came from all over Galilee, judea, jerusalem, edomia and
from the east of the JordanRiver, even from as far north as
Tyre and Sidon.
The news about his miracles hadspread far and wide and vast
numbers of people came to seehim.
(05:09):
Jesus instructed his disciplesto have a boat ready so the
crowd would not crush him.
Now pause Now.
Why do you think he would dothat?
Throw them down to the groundin front of him, shrieking
you're the son of God.
(05:29):
But Jesus sternly commanded thespirits not to reveal who he
was.
Now pause Now.
Why do you think he would dothat?
Remember, he's already told aguy hey, don't yell out to
everybody what I'm doing rightnow.
They'll find out soon enough ontheir own.
But instead, when that persondid yell out, he had to leave
town because there just wasn'tenough room.
(05:49):
And so what do you think theevil spirits are doing?
They're trying to reveal who hewas so that they don't know why
he's there exactly, but they'retrying to out him as quick as
possible, and so they think theyare actually doing more harm by
that.
And so Jesus is quietening thembecause he will share his glory
with nobody.
So here we go, verse 13.
Afterward, jesus went up on amountain and called out the ones
(06:11):
he wanted to go with him, andthey came to him.
Then he appointed 12 men withthem and called them his
apostles.
They were to accompany him andhe would send them out to preach
, giving them authority to castout demons.
These are the 12.
He chose James and John, sonsof Zebedee, but Jesus nicknamed
them the sons of thunder.
(06:32):
We'll cover why later Andrew, philip, bartholomew, matthew,
thomas, james, son of Alphaeus, thaddeus, simon the Zealot and
Judas Iscariot, who would laterbetray him.
One time Jesus entered a houseand the crowds began to gather
again Soon.
(06:52):
He and his disciples couldn'teven find time to eat.
When his family heard what washappening, they tried to take
him away, saying he is out ofhis mind.
But the teachers of religiouslaw who had arrived in Jerusalem
said no, he's possessed bySatan, the prince of demons.
That's where he gets the powerto cast out demons.
So Jesus called them over andresponded with an illustration.
(07:13):
How can Satan cast out Satan,he asked.
A kingdom divided by civil warwill collapse.
Similarly, a family splinteredby feuding will fall apart.
And if Satan is divided andfights against himself, how can
he stand?
He would never survive.
Let me illustrate it further.
Who is powerful enough to enterinto a house of a strong man
(07:34):
and plunder his goods?
Only someone even stronger, someone who could tie him up and
then plunder his house.
I tell you the truth all sinand blasphemy will be forgiven.
Here it is verse 29.
But anyone who blasphemes theHoly Spirit will not be forgiven
.
This is a sin with eternalconsequences.
He told them this because theywere saying he is possessed of
(07:56):
an evil spirit.
Verse 31,.
When Jesus' mother and brotherscame to see him, they stood
outside and sent word for him tocome out and to talk with them.
There were crowds sittingaround Jesus and someone said
your mother and your brothersare outside asking for you.
But Jesus replied who is mymother?
(08:34):
Who are my brothers?
Notice?
Just a bunch of stuff happeningright here.
So, first of all, we have wherehe is preaching and as he is
preaching and as he is doinggood, more and more people are
getting angry and getting upsetbecause he's not doing it their
way.
And they're getting worriedBecause, remember, it was
understood from the propheciesof the bible that when the
messiah comes, he was going tohave spiritual power, power over
evil spirits.
(08:54):
So it's one thing to do a bunchof healing.
It is quite another to startcasting out evil spirits,
because that is waving a massiveflag as to who he is, and so
they don't like that at all.
And so what the pharisees haveto do is they have to try to
excuse this, because that's thebig flag that says OK, this
really is the disciples.
But you know how sad it is, forJesus is on one end, he's got
(09:17):
the religious leaders, andnobody knows the Old Testament
like they do.
So if anybody should recognizewho Jesus is, it should be them,
and they hate him because hedidn't.
He's not doing it their way Onthe other side.
You got his family and theydon't know what's going on
either, but they're saying, hey,he's out of his mind, I don't
know what's going on.
They didn't recognize who hewas either.
And so you've got all thesepeople coming against him and
(09:40):
Jesus is still doing what hedoes.
I mean, you've got to loveJesus.
So if you've ever beenabsolutely just forsaken by
those you love, jesus knows howyou feel and you know what he
did.
He kept moving forward, doingthe will of his father.
I love that so much.
But the other one I want to getto is this question okay, have I
(10:02):
committed blasphemy against theHoly Spirit?
Now, I wish we were alltogether in one room, because I
would love to say, if you haveever wondered this I want you to
raise your hand because wouldwant you to feel better, because
most likely, 90 to 95% of uswould raise our hand and go yeah
, me too.
I'll never forget this.
Okay, I don't know, it wasyears ago now, but my sister and
(10:23):
I were adults at this point, and one day it just came up in a
conversation and both of usjust said hey, have you ever
thought that maybe you committedthat sin and we're going to go
to hell.
And we were both like, yes, youthought that too.
Oh, my goodness.
Okay, it wasn't just me, Iwasn't just crazy.
Yeah, because here's the thingwhen we read this, he said if
(10:44):
anyone who blasphemes the HolySpirit will never be forgiven,
this sin has eternalconsequences.
And it said, he told them thatbecause they were saying he's
possessed of an evil spirit, they were talking negatively
about the Holy Spirit.
And so therefore, then thethought process comes if you say
anything about the Holy Spirit, god's not going to forgive you.
That's not what he's trying tosay.
(11:05):
What he's trying to say is he'strying to say it's not that he
is now going to hold a grudge.
It is saying if you turn yourback on the Holy Spirit, there's
nothing else coming.
Because what was happening isit's the Holy Spirit that draws
us to salvation.
He is the one who convicts ourheart and pulls us.
(11:26):
And so if you resist, resist, resist the Holy Spirit, there's
nothing else coming to draw youto God.
And so blasphemy is not as muchabout you making God mad, but
it's more of you turning awayfrom God and nothing else is
coming.
And so I tell people, thepeople who have truly blasphemed
the Holy Spirit are not askingthat question.
The very fact that you areasking and you are worried and
(11:49):
you're concerned about it meansthat you care about the Holy
Spirit and you want the HolySpirit to draw you close to
himself, which means you're notblaspheming the Holy Spirit.
Those who are blaspheming arepeople who are actively turning
away, and here's another reasonwhy I know we never want to put
theology based on experience.
But here's one thing I havelistened to testimonies of
(12:11):
people who said I was in darkevil Wiccan or satanic worship
and all this kind of stuff andwe did everything we could to
blaspheme the Holy Spirit, almost like to completely make
it so that we could never go andbe with God, which is stupid to
me.
But it's what they would do.
But then they would say butthen later I would begin to feel
(12:33):
the tug of the Holy Spirit, butinstead of turning away from
the Holy Spirit, I would turntoward him.
And so it is.
Once again, it is less about youmaking a statement and now God
writes you off.
That's not who God is but it'srather about you so turning your
heart away from God, that youhave turned away from the Holy
Spirit and there is no salvationfor someone who's like that,
because there's nothing elsecoming.
(12:53):
The Holy Spirit is the one whodraws and so if you turn away
from the Holy Spirit and you'relooking in another direction,
nothing else is going to drawyou.
So I want to say that to you aswe end our time together, to
say the unforgivable sin is onlycommitted by those who are
trying to actively push away theHoly Spirit.
So be like this If you areworried that you have committed
(13:15):
the unpardonable sin and thatGod will not forgive you, then I
can assure you, by the veryfact that you're worried about
it, you haven't done it.
And even then, if you knowsomeone because here's the other
one if you know someone who youthink they probably have turned
away from God like that, can Itell you what I have heard of
testimonies is no matter howmuch they turn away from God and
(13:36):
how much they say they don'twant him, then as long as they
are turned away, yes, that's allthat's coming is the Holy
Spirit.
But as soon as they lessen up,the Holy Spirit is never going
to stop.
The Holy Spirit does not writeyou off.
Can I say that?
What can you do?
You can grieve the Holy Spirit, but what can you do to make him
where?
He will stop loving you, wherehe will stop?
Think about Jesus.
(13:57):
Left eternity, stepped intotime, was born in a humbling way
for God, the king of theuniverse, born into this life,
took on flesh the way we did, lived 33 years experiencing all
the same temptations, yetfalling to none of them, was
brutally beaten, died on thecross, rose up from the dead on
(14:20):
three days.
He did that.
You think he's worried about acouple of words you said a long
time ago when you were angry.
You think he can't forgive youof that?
Think about it.
What would the king not do toreach you?
I promise you you're closer tothe kingdom of heaven than you
realize.
Let's pray together right now.
God, thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, that the enemywants to lie to us.
(14:40):
He wants to sell us a bill ofgoods.
He wants to tell us that youcan't love us.
But you have proven a thousandtimes over that you cannot be
defeated.
I love you so much, I'm sothankful for you, and my prayer
is Holy Spirit, that you willopen our eyes to see just a
glimpse of your glory, just aglimpse of your goodness,
(15:01):
because I think of just aglimpse, and we will never stop
sharing your word with others, knowing you and making you known
.
In Jesus' name.
We pray amen.
Amen, god's word says in Mark 8, verse 34,.
It says if anyone would comeafter me, let him deny himself,
take up his cross and follow me.
I love you, I'll see youtomorrow.
From Mark, chapter four.
